Bypass plans blocked The planned Bulla bypass and link to Melbourne Airport has failed to get off the ground. Planning Minister Richard Wynne last week blocked VicRoads’ plans for a new six-lane freeway to the airport from the north, and a bypass of Bulla, because the roads would divide several rural properties and slice through a national reserve. Mr Wynne rejected the advice of a panel of planning experts that land for the freeway should be reserved now for future compulsory acquisition. The Melbourne Airport link – a proposed extension of the Tullamarine Freeway towards Sunbury – along with the Bulla bypass, could make access to the airport and the CBD from the north-western fringe easier by taking pressure off Sunbury Road. About 25,000 vehicles a day use the two-lane, undivided road, which makes a steep and dangerous S-bend through a deep gully and crosses Bulla Bridge, a narrow bluestone creek crossing that was built in 1869. Western Metropolitan MP Bernie Finn, a Bulla resident, lashed out at the government’s rejection of the bypass. “At a time when we are genuinely pushing for some measure to alleviate what is becoming strangling congestion, we have a government that continues to show its disdain for Sunbury,” Mr Finn said. “It’s staggering that VicRoads has recommended that the project go ahead but for the government to knock it back … I think it’s a disgrace.” “Some of us have been fighting for the Bulla bypass to go ahead for more than 25 years.
“We need some relief in the morning. It can take up to 30 minutes to get off Sunbury Road onto the Calder. “The traffic is quiet up to about two kilometres over Bulla Hill and then motorists are stuck.” Mr Wynne’s decision means VicRoads must return to the drawing board. Mr Wynne said the proposed route would have created too much hardship for property owners in its path and risked making some equestrian farms unviable.
‘‘
It definitely would have affected people’s access - Andrew Clarke
’’
“We know there is a need for the Bulla bypass as Melbourne’s west continues to grow,” he said. “We need a solution which delivers a new road with minimal impact to surrounding properties. “I have asked that other options be investigated.” Under the proposed plan, 37 properties faced acquisition, with 17 of them to have been divided by the road. Among affected properties would be Living Legends at Woodlands Park, where many retired champion racehorses are kept. Living Legends manager Andrew Clarke said the decision to reject the VicRoads’ proposal was welcome news. “It definitely would have affected people’s access to Living Legends,” Mr Clarke said. “It just would have made it more complicated to get here and that would have had an impact on the business.”

Little piggies find their way home By Esther Lauaki Five piglets have been returned to their home after a bizarre custody battle involving a not-for-profit animal sanctuary and the animals’ owner. Edgar’s Mission, in Lancefield, came under fire after five baby pigs that came into their care were alleged by their owner to have been stolen from his small farm near Cranbourne on September 23. The owner, hobby farmer Sam McCarthy, also alleged that up to 30 other pigs, a goat, several rabbits and an American bulldog called Junior had been “released” from his farm. RSPCA Victoria chief executive Dr Liz Walker confirmed that the litter was handed
over to an RSPCA centre in Pearcedale, which transferred them to Edgar’s Mission. The Lancefield sanctuary owner, Pam Ahern told Star Weekly that the pigs had recently been released back to their owner. Ms Ahern said the charity had been subjected to an unwarranted smear campaign on social media and criticised for supposedly refusing to return the piglets to the owner. “We rely on public support so when our organisation is at the centre of controversy surrounded by half-truths and malicious hearsay, it’s deeply upsetting and harms our efforts to be the best advocates for animals,” Ms Ahern said. “Edgar’s Mission maintains we have always acted legally and in the best interests of the piglets.”
The RSPCA advised that the piglets had been handed in by a member of the public who had found them abandoned. “We assessed the piglets to be in a poor and unhygienic condition, consistent with the story that they had been abandoned,” Ms Ahern said. “One piglet was taken directly to a local vet and it received ongoing medical treatment while in our care.” Of the other piglets, Ms Ahern said three were underweight, with ribs, spine and hips protruding, and had untreated wounds. All piglets had lice. She said the sanctuary received a phone call from a member of the public who claimed to be the owner of the piglets and stated that the Pearcedale RSPCA had given him the contact
details of Edgar’s Mission. “Edgar’s Mission had no legal duty or right to hand the piglets to any party except the RSPCA. The RSPCA was responsible for the piglets at that time,” Ms Ahern said. Mr McCarthy said his partner had returned from work on September 23 to discover their hand-reared piglets had been taken from the house. He said there had been no concerns about the animals’ welfare and a vet had given a clean bill of health just days before their disappearance. According to Mr McCarthy, Ms Ahern had refused to return the pint-sized porcines. “She wouldn’t let me in the door … I’ve done nothing aggressive or threatening, I just want my pigs back,” he said.

Tin shakers and poppy sellers are gearing up for the Returned and Service League’s annual appeal, which starts in coming weeks. Woodend RSL volunteers are all set for the Poppy Appeal, which will run from late October. Thousands of the much-loved red poppies will be sold to raise funds for current and former servicemen and women in need. Victorian appeals manager Peter Smith says the appeal is a cause that resonates with all Australians.
“Each and every person who purchases a poppy feels a great sense of pride in wearing it in the lead up to and on Remembrance Day,” Mr Smith said. Woodend RSL branch president Barry Meldrum acknowledges the commitment shown by members and volunteers who make the Poppy Appeal a success. “It is humbling to see the wave of support and enthusiasm by the locals who support the Poppy Appeal in so many ways,” he said.

Drivers who ignore parking restrictions in the Macedon Ranges are on notice. Council enforcement officers will be patrolling the shire’s hot-spots for parking offences, including Mollison Street, Kyneton and Gisborne’s farmers market, in response to a rise in cars parking illegally. The council is urging motorists to be mindful of parking restrictions and always check for sign-posted time limits, clearways and no standing areas. Community safety manager Anne-Louise Lindner said enforcement officers patrolled the shire to ensure the safety of all residents and visitors. The purpose of restrictions are threefold, Ms Linder said. “They contribute to road safety for motorists and pedestrians, they provide opportunities for people with a disability to access their community safely and they enable a regular turnover of car spaces, which supports local traders,” she said. Ms Linder said motorists using disability parking bays without a valid permit and double-parking to load vehicles would be booked. Fines for ignoring parking restrictions vary depending on the type of infringement, but motorists run the risk of a fine of up to $155. Council enforcement officers will patrol high density traffic areas at peak times, including market days and school drop-off and pick-up times. Esther Lauaki

By Esther Lauaki Journey times have nearly doubled for some Macedon Ranges V/Line users who have to catch buses as level crossing removal works continue, according to the deputy opposition leader. Buses replaced trains this month on the Bendigo line which has been shut down until October 30 while work to remove two dangerous and congested level crossings, at Main Road and Furlong Road in St Albans, is undertaken. More than $46 million in improvement works on the V/Line Bendigo, Swan Hill and Echuca lines is happening at the same time to minimise disruption to passengers. A month of road and rail closures until November has also been scheduled as major works on the Sunbury/Bendigo line are completed. David Hodgett, opposition public transport spokesman, said in a letter to Star Weekly that commuters from Gisborne to Castlemaine were sitting on the coach service for 72 minutes compared to what would be a 34-minute trip by train. Mr Hodgett lashed out at the government and Public Transport Victoria for what he believes to be “appalling” treatment of Macedon Ranges V/Line users during level crossing removal at Sunshine. “[This is] appalling treatment for at least 27 days being experienced by Macedon Ranges rail users,” he said. “Commuters have been shunted into tens of costly, slow road coaches for the
whole of a trip. This has hugely increased some journey times.” Mr Hodgett said careful planning would have minimised disruption to travellers. “Some current Bendigo, Echuca and Swan Hill line works, such as sleeper replacement and rerailing, could occur at night between the last train and the first scheduled train next morning,” he said. “V/Line could cancel late night Bendigo-bound trains to give contractors a longer ‘window’ to occupy tracks at night. Bridge works could be staged.

“The Andrews government [has] ensured Metro trains mostly keep running between October 4 and 30 from Flinders Street to Sunshine … no such luck for Clarkefield, Gisborne, Lancefield, Macedon or Riddells Creek residents for at least 27 days.” Macedon Labor MP Mary-Anne Thomas sympathised with commuters. “We recognise the temporary closure of the line is disruptive, but it’s essential to keep passengers and workers safe and deliver these works efficiently,” she said. She said the state government had restored and increased funding to V/Line, ordered 48 new carriages and added more than 340 extra services every week, with 170 more to be introduced next year.

In the garden of music A symphony will play out amid the riotous colour of a Macedon garden this weekend. The private garden of Dale Simpson and Jonathan Hazelton, at 3 Church Street, will resonate with the sounds of music performed by young guitarist Aife Pollard Larkin and the Saverio String Quartet. Home-grown musicians including soprano Kristen Leich and pianist David Kram will also perform. Mr Simpson and Mr Hazelton say they bought their home in Macedon for the garden rather than the house. “We just fell in love with the garden,” Mr Simpson said. “It features a number of rare trees and shrubs that come from South and North America, China and Europe –

Sunbury cops wild wind’s wrath By Esther Lauaki Sunbury rescue crews had their work cut out for them as wild winds lashed Victoria last week. State Emergency Service workers responded to more than 20 calls for help, and also sent six volunteers to assist Brimbank SES throughout the state’s west. The majority of the call-outs were for building damage, fallen trees and trees over roads. The most unusual job concerned a trampoline that blew on to the roof of a property in the Ashfield estate. Sunbury SES spokesman Jarrod Bell said crews and volunteers worked tirelessly for nearly 12 consecutive hours. “As a result of a major wind storm event across Melbourne, SES across the state received more than 3000 calls for help as a result of this wind,” Mr Bell said. “Sunbury SES operations commenced at 10am with final crews returning to Sunbury headquarters at 9.30pm. “At its peak, Sunbury emergency services had all five vehicles in our fleet and more than 30 highly trained volunteers in the field with an incident control point located at the headquarters assisting the Sunbury community. “Thank you to all the volunteers who responded and gave up their Sunday to help protect the Sunbury community.” The Macedon Ranges also experienced high winds, with the Gisborne SES removing trees from roads and driveways.

Tin man hits the trail Peter “Patto” Patterson’s latest artworks are feshly created but there’s a lot of history behind them. “Patto” is among the artists who have signed on for this year’s Macedon Ranges Arts Trail. The Riddells Creek artist, who also heads a construction training company, has immersed himself in private art tuition and workshops for the past four years to hone his skills. He’s used recycled tin sheets from a farm shed that was burned in last year’s Lancefield fires as a textured canvas for his paintings. “I try and do things a little bit differently,” he says. “I go out of my way to create different types of paintings.”

A photo reality check Macedon Ranges photographers Ralph Ewart and Deborah Mullins look at life through different lenses than most people. Their latest exhibition, Seeing is Believing Believing, open this Thursday (October 20) at the Black Anther Gallery in Woodend. The collection of works by the two experienced photographic artists includes photos that blur the lines between illusion and reality. Mullins says her works, which include windows set on landscapes, provide “insights into what lies immediately in front of the viewer but includes other realities from the same moment in time”. “Photography today can be anything – what we see, can be real, or perhaps not.

“Truth in photography can be an elusive notion. “The meaning of the photograph can be so easily changed by the context placed in and around them, creating a whole new story.” Among Ewart’s art are pieces that place animals in unusual locations. “His rich imagination leaves a huge scope for viewers to interpret the story in many individual ways, often without logic and reason, but with a playful and meaningful narrative,” Mullins says. Seeing is Believing will run until November 7 and will be open from Thursday to Monday, 10am-5pm.

Greyhound trainer wins at VCAT By Esther Lauaki A Romsey greyhound trainer has won her bid to continue operating next door to land earmarked for a major housing development. Macedon Ranges council granted trainer Helen Ivers a 10-year permit in September 2015 against an officer’s recommendation to refuse an application for a retrospective permit for the operation in Knox Road. Ms Ivers had kept as many as 35 greyhounds on the property – which includes two large, air-conditioned buildings, whelping kennels, a
training track, three runs and fenced yards – since 2009 without planning approval. At the time of the council’s decision, developer Romsey Property Group representative Ross Coster expressed fears about the loss of amenity for future estate residents. He said some of the more than 200 houses to be built in the Lomandra estate over the next four years would be inside the 500-metre buffer zone around the greyhound property recommended by the Environment Protection Authority.
Romsey Property Group, challenged the decision at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal on the grounds that the greyhound operation was “incompatible with future residential use” of the neighbouring estate. Concerns over the noise and smell from the kennels were brought up by the developer’s lawyers. But the tribunal upheld the council’s decision to grant the permit. “I do not consider the proposal will significantly prejudice the use of surrounding
land, given noise impacts from the enclosed kennels can be mitigated and noise emissions from open kennels and outdoor areas can be appropriately managed,” VCAT member Christopher Harty said in a report. Ms Ivers also successfully applied to change two of the 16 imposed conditions on the permit that required her to collect, store, treat and dispose of all solid and liquid waste from the animals. She unsuccessfully sought to amend the 10-year limit on the permit which she said “unfairly” limited the operation.

Who doesn’t love a good old street festival? The Sunbury StreetLife Festival will be back to liven up O’Shanassy Street on Sunday, November 20. Event co-ordinator Sharyn Snook says the festival celebrates everything local and is an example of the community and business owners working together to celebrate main street culture. “This vibrant community event offers something for everyone – amazing businesses, live entertainment, hands-on workshops, roving acts and children’s activities,” Ms Snook said. “It’s a family-friendly affair. It is a celebration full of fun with plenty of surprises for all.” The free event will showcase the offerings of local traders and more than 120 market stalls are expected to line the street. Proceeds from the event will be donated to local charities, which will add to a tally of
$13,000 raised in the past three years. “Our festival is brought to you by a team of amazing volunteers who hope you enjoy the day and continue to support us in the years to come,” Ms Snook said. The festivities will kick off from 10am and run until 3.30pm along O’Shanassy Street, Sunbury. Esther Lauaki

Baby funding for Kyneton
KYNETON HOSPITAL
Hospital’s ‘home’ design By Esther Lauaki The undulating Macedon Ranges have inspired the design of the new Kyneton District Health ambulatory wing that is helping to attract a raft of new services. Kyneton Hospital was redesigned 12 years ago but needed an additional “arm” for the ambulatory care centre that opened last year. A year on, the centre’s new consulting, rehabilitation and treatment rooms are bustling with patients and the mobility and therapy garden, which includes inclines from stairs and ramps to help those getting back on their feet, is thriving. Chief executive Maree Cuddihy said the new modern hub had helped expand the hospital’s medical services. “We’ve recently welcomed Dr Mark
Farrugia and specialist Peter Trowbridge to provide obstetric services for local women,” Ms Cuddihy said. “As we grow into the space, we’re finding more opportunities to deliver best care. The rehab gym has just had parallel bars installed, adding to the range of support for patients who transition from a hospital stay. “There is also a function space, where we’ll be meeting with the community for our AGM on November 17.” Melbourne architect Charles Wright’s brief from the Victorian Department of Health, together with Kyneton District Health, was to integrate the old wings with the new. “We went through a number of masterplans to find the right solution,” Mr Wright said, “and came up with a scheme of two zones – one the acute zone for 24-hour hour care, the other
being for day service.” The original building continues to provide a high level of service for patients but two wings that were used as a nursing home are no longer required. For the new wing, the Macedon Ranges were loosely interpreted in a series of forms made from compressed fibro-cement, with an internal garden separating the old and new wings. Ms Cuddihy said it was important that patients felt “at home” when they visited. “We’ve been a part of the Macedon Ranges community for 160 years, and people right across the shire access our care in hospital and at home,” she said. “So the design is a reminder of our connection to this great place in which we all live and work. “The building reflects that externally and with functional features like the rehab garden.”
Kyneton District Health has received funding to improve its fetal monitoring systems in the wake of the baby death scandal at a Bacchus Marsh hospital. Forty-six Victorian public hospitals will share in $1.4 million in funding as part of the state government’s commitment to “strengthen” maternity services. An investigation last year found there were 11 preventable baby deaths at the Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital between 2003 and 2014. Health Minister Jill Hennessy announced this month that Kyneton hospital would receive $10,000 to help better train and equip doctors, nurses and midwives. She said the state government was “doing everything we can” to ensure Victoria’s maternity services were safe. “It’s crucial that hospitals continue to train and develop their staff so they have the skills they need to better monitor women and their babies before giving birth,” Ms Hennessy said. “We are doing everything possible to make sure that what happened at [the Bacchus Marsh hospital] never happens again.” According to an Auditor-General’s report tabled in State Parliament earlier this year, senior clinicians raised concerns about the hospital’s capacity to manage its maternity services years before an investigation was launched. MY PLACE Dave Allan is big on community spirit – and finds Sunbury has plenty of it. The long-serving Rotarian spoke to Esther Lauaki.
How long have you lived in the area? We have lived at the same address for the past 30 years. Sunbury has grown and changed enormously during that time. We have a greater range of shops and facilities. Our children went to local schools, which provided them with the education that set them off on their academic careers. Most of the two hectare-blocks surrounding us have been subdivided into 0.4 hectare blocks but there is still a rural feel to the place. How did you become involved in Rotary? I was invited by a work colleague to attend a meeting at Broadmeadows Rotary Club in 1982. I could see the good work that they were doing and thought I could contribute ‌ I have been a member ever since. I joined the Rotary Club of Sunbury in 1987. I have held many positions in the club and was president in 2014-15. The club is involved in many local and overseas projects. The monthly market, our mainstay of fundraising, has recently moved to the Village Green and has been renamed Sunbury Village Market. Currently, we are selling tickets in our trailer raffle to be drawn at
the market on December 10. Rotary has a great philosophy of “service above self. Rotarians enjoy the company of other Rotarians, but it is the opportunity to serve the community that is the greatest attraction. What other hats do you wear in the community? An interest in recycling and diverting materials from landfill – especially organics from the garden and the kitchen and conversion to compost for reuse on the garden. What is something that others don’t know about you? I have a passion for long-distance bike rides. I was very proud of my efforts to complete the Three Peaks rides last year. I also enjoy gardening and growing veggies. What is it that you love most about this community? I am always amazed by the many generous-spirited people in Sunbury. It is a great place to raise children, with fabulous sporting and educational facilities. I love the trees and fresh air that country living allows us and the opportunity to go bike riding around Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges on the weekends. I get a great deal of pleasure riding out from Sunbury early on a Sunday morning, through South Gisborne and perhaps out to Woodend, Hanging Rock or Mount Macedon. Sunbury is still small enough that when you go down the street, you’ll often meet someone you know. For information or to join Rotary, go to www. rotaryclubsunbury.org.au
(Joe Mastroianni)
What is your connection to Sunbury? In 1978, I worked at the old Shire of Bulla in the engineering department, at the offices in Macedon Street, Sunbury. I was impressed by the country atmosphere, the schools and services available ‌ having a young family at that time, Julie and I thought that Sunbury would make a great place to raise our children. When the opportunity arose to purchase a two-hectare block of land, we grabbed it with open arms.

High-flyers have eye in the sky By Charlene Macaulay They’re the big boy toys taking the skies by storm. Drones are the latest must-have item for the tech-savvy and are increasingly being used for both recreational and commercial purposes. Add a camera and they can gather breathtaking aerial images and video. Essentially, it’s like a large-scale video game – except the controller is in charge of a real drone that is flying over a real world capturing real-time imagery. Anyone can own one, but they are subject to a host of aviation laws and you need a remote licence if you want to fly them commercially. Star Weekly speaks to four people about the rise of drones.
The business owner
Mark Playdon caught the drone bug a couple of years ago when a friend bought him a drone for Christmas. The Williams Landing resident crashed it inside his house a couple of days later then went out and bought another, attached a Go-Pro camera to it, and was hooked. These days, Mr Playdon runs Drone Addiction, an online store selling drones and drone equipment. He also takes aerial photography and videography for fun. Vision that he took of Trentham Falls caught the eye of Places Victoria, which republished his work on social media. “You shouldn’t fly any further than line of sight,” he said. “You should still be able to see the machine – even though they can go much further than that.” Mr Playdon’s drone – a DJI Inspire – has been decorated with black, white and grey camoflague stickers and retails for about $7000.

He said drones were particularly popular among men, admitting that he had yet to sell one of the devices to a woman.

together once a fortnight to fly their drones and share tips. Member Troy Hixon, 42, owns a DJI Phantom 3 and tries to fly it at least once or twice a week. “I had a friend come out from the UK who had one, and I took him around Wyndham and
different places to take photos and he was doing some pretty good video,” the Tarneit resident said. “It’s a nice little toy to have – an expensive toy, but it’s pretty cool. “You can get up high and get a good view of things. I like taking photos anyway, so this is just another way of taking different photos.”

Werribee’s Brendan Gill agrees. “It’s something to do for myself – it’s good fun,” the 48-year-old said. “I’ve always had an interest in photography, and this is just photography at a different level. “There’s quite a complex range of rules and regulations that you’ve got to stick by – the safety side of it is the big part. There’s no room in this hobby for people that want to be cowboys.” Mr Gill said Werribee South and along the coast were his favourite locations to take his DJI Phantom 3 Advanced out for a spin.
Drones in real estate
12327341-DJ42-16 10045703-01
The real estate industry has jumped on the bandwagon, using drones to capture aerial photos and video to market properties.
Samantha McCarthy, from hockingstuart Werribee, said the agency had been using drones recently to market “lifestyle properties”. The senior sales consultant said aerial images and videos gave interested buyers a good perspective of property sizes and their surroundings. Ms McCarthy said the videos had received a positive response among buyers. “I don’t tend to use it on every single home,” she said. “It obviously doesn’t suit every single property – but it definitely works incredibly well to highlight the features of prestige properties, and larger homes. “Every little bit of extra marketing that’s well thought out will definitely help sell the home quicker and for a better result.”

T
he Kilmore International School is an independent, non-denominational, co-educational boarding and day school for about 400 academically motivated local and international students. Classes are offered from years 3 to 12 with boarding available from year 7. The Kilmore International School has a track record of academic achievement. More than half of last year’s graduates had an ATAR of at least 90 and about a quarter attained 95 or higher. Most local students live in the region or commute from the northern suburbs of Melbourne. The curriculum in years 3 to 10 is based on the Australian curriculum and is designed to challenge students. Our inspiring, experienced and highly qualified teachers share a commitment to engage and monitor each student and provide a year’s growth in learning for a year’s input of teaching. As we are an international school, all students are required to study Mandarin from year 3 but may study other languages such as Indonesian and German in later years. After-school supervised study is available from year 5 with subject tutorials offered from year 10. In years 11 and 12, students study for the International Baccalaureate Diploma, which emphasises inquiry based and independent learning. The Kilmore International School is a residential college. Boarders, the “heart and soul of the school, experience a family atmosphere where girls and boys from country Victoria, Melbourne and from overseas become part of a close-knit international learning community. Full or weekly boarding is available. House parents, the head of boarding, medical staff and kitchen staff are responsible for the safety and welfare of boarders. All boarders are members of the local golf club and leisure centre. Supervised study and evening tutorials are provided from 7pm.
We have a strong system of pastoral care in which homeroom teachers play a key role. Students experience an exciting and stimulating cross-curricular program. For example, students can play a musical instrument, perform in school plays, take part in inter-school sport, attend excursions, write articles for school publications, enrol in state and national academic competitions, participate in public speaking and debating tournaments, join the Duke of Edinburgh program and attend the fun-filled annual
camp. All students are members of a “house, which fosters the strengthening of social skills and friendships. Leadership roles are strongly encouraged. Student captains lead weekly assemblies, select fundraising activities and write for the school newsletter. We want our graduates to be confident and responsible citizens and leaders. It is the early years of education that lay the foundation for future academic success. Children need to be in a learning environment where they are valued by their teachers, free
from distractions and are taught to develop effective study habits. That is why we are building a new state-of-the-art primary school that will open in 2017. I invite you to visit and take a tour of The Kilmore International School. Andrew Taylor, principal The Kilmore International School, 40 White Street, Kilmore. Price: $1.675 million Private sale
Woodlands is a gorgeous property, not just for its aesthetic beauty indoors and out, but also the meticulous focus on real-world liveability – executed with sophistication, skill and creativity. It’s hard not to start with the grounds, so let’s. More than two hectares, they’re a stunning display of garden “rooms”, the biggest of which is out front – lake with jetty, inter-connecting lily ponds, succulent and rose gardens, tulips, numerous arbours with diverse vines, lovely trees, verdant lawns and extravagant plantings … and so much more. There’s a poplar paddock, a walled
garden of ornamentals, a pony paddock, a small productive orchard, and a beautiful glasshouse that could be a studio. And an old stable, once part of the original Whitelodge estate, is a stunning backdrop to a (rabbit-proof) potager garden. A showpiece of clever architecture and premium fittings, the Jeske-built house and indoor pool set-up form an unbroken square around a magnificent courtyard, accessible from several points. A water feature from local stone sculptor Deva Ashika and wooden walkways create art from nature. Living rooms are a vast family-meals area, under a 3.5-metre vaulted ceiling and

with a wood heater, and a library/rumpus room. The classy kitchen has chocolate soft-close joinery with Italian handles, stone benches (including an island), and the full suite of Miele appliances. The enormous main bedroom has a large picture window (with an automatic roman blind) that takes in unbeatable garden and lake views, along with a fitted dressing room, and a spa en suite with, like every room in the house, magical garden views. One of the other three bedrooms is tiled and has an en suite, which also connects with the 18-metre infinity-edged, ionised, solar-heated pool. The largest of four

Other indoor goodies include double glazing and zoned underfloor heating, ducted heating, refrigerated cooling, split-systems, ducted vacuum and a storage-wine room. Machinery and wood sheds, a dog room with yard, a bore, 82,000-litre water tank, town water, chicken coop and automatic driveway gates are also here, just 10 minutes from the village. Carole Levy

FOOD REVIEW
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds creative comfort … Mascalzone has been open for a couple of months now, replacing one of the nondescript venues for which Nelson Place is mostly known, that one replacing another before it. Mascalzone is a sure step in a positive direction. It’s done out brightly, with an accent on Italian in its decor, ambience and food. There’s a big brick oven at the rear and a display cabinet of fine-looking antipasto goodies at the front. We find the service for Saturday lunch is terrific and our food is brought to us in a timely fashion. Mascalzone’s menu is a smartly tight line-up of modern Italiana classics that extends from starters through pizzas, pasta and salads to dolci. When checking out such joints as this for the first time, we routinely choose one of the basic pizzas, just to see how they shape up. In this case that means the napoletana ($18), picked from a list of nine red pizzas and five of the white kind. Our pizza is very nice, with simplicity being the thing. The toppings are all of good quality and in the right proportions. The crusts have a wonderful charred thing going on. From the list of five pastas, we select the pappardelle al ragu di agnello with roasted asparagus ($22). At first, the lamb shoulder sauce and the white pasta present as so pale as to be pallid.
MASCALZONE PIZZERIA OSTERIA ARTIGIANA Address: 217-219 Nelson Place, Williamstown Phone: 9397 7269 But there’s no doubting the home-style depth of flavours in the meat, the attendant juices and the excellent cheese gratings. All this rests upon, and about, truly wonderful house-made pasta that is al dente perfection. Tiramisu ($10) is a dream of cream and not much else – but we love it anyway. Next time we’ll be up for sharing one of the two antipasti platters. And there will be a next time. Nelson Place … food destination. NAPOLETANA PIZZA

SPORT Tale of two sports teases Sunbury star Sunbury’s Sarah Lampard entered the inaugural AFL women’s draft thinking she was a slight chance of being selected. After all, she had played only one season of football. “It was hard to tell as there was so much good talent,” Lampard recalled this week. “I went to a talent search day earlier in the year run by [AFL-listed players] Daisy Pearce and Darren Flanigan. I went really well and they asked me to join the state academy. The next day I was training with Daisy and Melissa Hickey, who suggested I join a VFL team.” In fact, Lampard joined the VU Western Spurs under the tuition of women’s football legend Debbie Lee. On Wednesday, Lampard’s name was called at pick 134 by the Melbourne Football Club. Despite being one of the last players selected,
she didn’t give up hope. “I’m just ecstatic, it still feels like a dream,” she said. “I was at home with my dad and brother. I knew there were a few more picks for the Victorian teams and I was hoping I was a chance. We had technical issues … we had to wait to hear my name and we went nuts when we heard I’d been selected.” At the Demons, Lampard will be reunited with Lee, the football operations manager. She’ll also be joined by Spurs teammates Ainslie Kemp, Shelley Scott and Alyssa Mifsud, who were all drafted. “It’s great as you obviously know how they play,” Lampard says. “Debbie has been involved at Melbourne for a long time. It’s really exciting to have her involved.” Making Lampard’s successful move into football more impressive is the fact she’s been juggling football and basketball this year.
Most weekends she would play football with the Spurs then suit up for one, sometimes two, basketball games with the Sunbury Jets. She was part of the Jets’ Big V division 1 championship side which went through the season undefeated. “It’s been a couple of crazy months,” Lampard says. “There were a few clashes [of the two sports], about three or four games. I would go from playing football straight to basketball. I was lucky the training didn’t clash. Some Mondays I’d feel it a bit when my legs were sore.” Lampard says she will see how things go before deciding whether to focus on just one sport. “Football at present has better opportunities, but I’ll see how it goes.” Tara Murray
Sunbury nails a top win By Tara Murray Sunbury has grabbed the points in a hard-fought Bowls Victoria pennant division 1 section 1 contest. Coming off a disappointing first-up loss against Glenroy, Sunbury led for most of the contest against Melton. Despite a comeback from Melton after the tea break Sunbury won the last three ends to secure a 79 (13)-74 (5) victory. Mark Cowan led the only winning rink for Sunbury, winning 27-13, while Brad Janner’s rink finished 24-24. Elise Cowan’s rink lost 17-11, while Carla Kriznanic lost rare consecutive rounds by going down 20-17. Sunbury’s David Glennon said conditions were difficult, with the wind making it hard for everyone. “We made five changes to the top side and they were significant changes, too,” he said. “Carla’s game was very close and losing by three shots is easily enough covered. Brad’s got a three on the last end to split the points. “It was a good response to the heavy defeat in round one.” Among the changes was the naming of three of the Long family in their first team debut – Wayne, Mikayla and Paul. It was a mixed weekend for the Sunbury teams, with four of the six teams claiming victory. The two losing teams were those that won in the opening week of the season, meaning all Sunbury teams sit 1-1 after two rounds. The first team now faces Altona Sports on its synthetic green. In Central Highlands Bowls, Trentham won its first match back in division 1. In a match against last season’s premier, Kyneton Golf, there was nothing between the two teams all day with Trentham getting up 88 (14)-86 (4). The result leaves Kyneton Golf without a win from its opening two matches. Gisborne made it two from two with a comprehensive win against Woodend. Gisborne won all four rinks easily for a 127 (18)-83 (0) victory. The rink of Glenn Johnston jr enjoyed a second successive win of more than 14 shots. Darren Fletcher’s rink won by 19 shots. All four rinks were one-sided in the match between Kyneton and Lancefield, with Lancefield winning three of the four rinks. Lancefield won 107 (16)-98 (2), leaving it also undefeated. In the other match, Romsey was defeated by Bacchus Marsh 134 (17)-83 (1). Diggers Rest, Kyneton, Kyneton Golf and Macedon won their division 2 matches. Kyneton, Lancefield, Romsey, Gisborne and Woodend won in division 3.

A good word in the right place Having been on an AFL list for five years, Fremantle’s Tom Sheridan has seen a lot of great footballers. But there was one player from his junior days at Riddells Creek who stuck in his mind: Kate Darby. A chance meeting between Sheridan and new Carlton women’s coach, Damian Keeping, who is originally from the Macedon Ranges, got them talking about Darby. “He [Sheridan] is the same age as my brother,” Darby said last week. “He said to Carlton, ‘I know a girl who played under-12s and under-14s who’s a good player; you should see if she’s still keen for a kick. They couldn’t believe they had to come to Perth to find out about someone who grew up in their own backyard.” Carlton got in touch with Darby about eight weeks ago and she went down to the Blues for a session to show them what she could do. Although Darby hadn’t played since under-14s, the Blues liked what they saw and drafted her at pick 126 in the inaugural AFL women’s draft. The 25-year-old, who can play at either end of the ground, said being drafted was a dream come true. “As a kid you dream of wanting to play AFL football,” she said. “After football, I played tennis [and coached], played cricket and basketball; a bit of everything. “I only played school football, once or twice a year. I’ll give it a good crack and make the most of it. I owe Tommy a bit.” Darby isn’t the only one in her family with football talent. Her brother, Matthew, was on Essendon’s VFL list this year. “We were so excited when Matt made the VFL team for the Bombers, and now hopefully we’ll both get a crack next year. He didn’t play this year because of injury so hopefully we’ll both take to the field.” Darby, who lives in Torquay, will have a familiar face with her at the Blues: Jess Kennedy, who played netball for several years at the Bombers was taken as a free agent selection by the Blues after the draft. “[Jess] filled in for my cricket team a few times,” Darby said. “A photo was put up on the club’s Facebook of us together. Everyone at the club is right behind us … they’ve all been so supportive.”

Kyneton draft pick spurred on by Demons Kyneton’s Ainslie Kemp was among the nervous footballers gathered for the inaugural AFL women’s draft last week. In the room was the best football talent from across Victoria, and some from across Australia, all hoping to hear their names called. The 19-year-old had to wait until the second half of the draft to hear her name. Melbourne, which with the Western Bulldogs is one of the pioneering AFL clubs of women’s football, called her name at pick 88. “To be honest, it hasn’t sunk in,” Kemp said the day after the draft. “It was incredible being there, I can’t describe it – there was so many people getting selected. “I was with my mum and boyfriend. I cried when I was selected, then I looked over at my mum and she was worse than me.”
Having played for Melbourne in an exhibition game earlier this year, the VU Western Spurs’ young gun knew her name was on the radar, but she wasn’t taking anything for granted. “I had meetings with a couple of clubs, but I wasn’t getting my hopes up,” she said. “I didn’t want to get cocky thinking I would be selected. I didn’t have a preference where I played – I just wanted to play next year. “As I had previously played with Melbourne, it felt special to be selected by them.” Kemp, who played junior football at Trentham before being part of Kyneton’s first youth girls side and then with Bendigo Thunder, will be around some familiar faces at the Demons. Spurs coach Debbie Lee is women’s football operations manager at the Demons, while
Spurs teammates Shelley Scott, Alyssa Mifsud and Sarah Lampard were also selected by the Demons. She said she was especially thrilled to see Lampard selected. “It will allow us to develop together,” she said. “It could be the key next year and the difference between the good and great sides.” Kemp said the travelling from Kyneton each week to train and play with the Spurs had been worth it. “I think that everything that I’ve done has influenced my game. Moving from playing regional to premier football has helped me.” Tara Murray Ainslie Kemp has been picked by Melbourne for the AFL women’s league. (Damjan Janevski)
McGann’s the man By Tara Murray Sunbury has taken its second scalp in as many weeks to start its Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup campaign. Having won on the final ball against Riddell in round one, Sunbury made the most of difficult conditions to knock off Woodend on Saturday. Both teams featured in 2015-16 finals. Against Woodend, it was the Jason McGann show with both bat and ball. In windy conditions, Sunbury battled hard to make 6-165 from its 40 overs. McGann, coming in at 4-83, posted an unbeaten 47. Sunbury player-coach Justin Nelson said he thought the score wasn’t a bad one considering the wind, which was “shocking”. In reply, Woodend couldn’t get going with just one partnership over 30. McGann was the destroyer, four wickets in his first spell putting Woodend on the back foot and headed to a modest 8-117. McGann took 4-15 off eight overs. Nelson said clearly it was McGann who had got them the win. “He was fantastic and isn’t showing any signs of slowing down.” Nelson, in his first season as coach, said he couldn’t have asked for a better start. “I certainly would have taken that at the start of the season,” he said. “You’d think both sides would be among teams looking to be top four. “If you don’t win early games it can come back to bite you at the end of the season. I’m enjoying it so far.” For the first time in its history, Sunbury has this season welcomed two imports. Englishman Steve Jenkin is a middle-order batsman who can bowl, while Apolinaire Stephen is a bowler from Vanuatu. “The club has stepped outside its comfort zone,” Nelson said. “The committee has been really good about it. They’re both good lads and have strengthened our bowling.” Nelson said they would look to inject some youth into the side during the season, with the club having a strong under-17 program. Mitchell Johnston, who made his McIntyre Cup debut last season, is one who’ll be looking for opportunities. Sunbury faces reigning premiers Gisborne on Saturday. Gisborne is the only other team to win both its opening round matches, defeating Diggers Rest Bulla in a rematch of last season’s grand final. The Dragons restricted the Burras to 121 in their innings, chasing it down with the loss of just one wicket, with Riley Vernon 71 not out. Rupertswood won its first game back in the McIntyre Cup, defeating Riddell. Making just 132, it didn’t seem like it would be enough for Rupo, but its bowlers did the job, restricting Riddell to 127. Romsey defeated Bacchus Marsh in the other match.
Girls comp puts runs on board Gisborne and District region’s Renegades Cricket League is hoping to give more young girls the chance to realise their cricket amibitions. The competition, in its second year, is aimed at getting girls between the ages of 10-14 into the game. This year, the girls will be put into teams to play weekly matches and take part in skills sessions. Former state junior cricketer and current Premier cricketer Tegan Orwin will help run the program. Orwin represented the Central Highlands at a junior level. Current Central Highlands star Jacinta Chandler Goodyear and Melton’s Nicole Martin are also helping out. Competition organiser Angela Dempsey said there had been a lot of interest from girls wanting to get involved. She said Riddell, Hanging Rock and Kyneton all had strong numbers interested and could possibly field their own teams. Other teams will comprise girls from nearby clubs. Players who are new to the sport and aren’t associated with a club can also sign on. The five-week competition starts on November 2 at the Riddells Creek Recreation Reserve from 4.45pm. A free come and train day will be held at the reserve on Sunday from 10am. Details: 0412 204 975.

Sunbury United has opened its account in Gisborne and District Cricket Association B grade. Facing neighbouring Ashfield, which also lost its opening round match, United battled its way to 143 before being bowled out in the final over. Skipper Steve Grey top scored with 30. In reply, Ashfield struggled with only two batsmen scoring double figures on its way to 9-73. Corey Woolley batted throughout for 35 not out. Lancefield made it two from two by defeating Macedon. Macedon’s score of 130 proved no match for the Tigers, who made 3-133. Tigers captain-coach Luke Barker took 6-19 and made 58 not out. East Sunbury remains winless after losing to St Anthonys, while Wallan defeated Bacchus Marsh. 45 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 18, 2016
