Finding Freo plea heard By Esther Lauaki News of a pup lost in the woods has captured hearts in a community that now is going to extraordinary lengths to find Freo. The nearly-two-year-old German shorthaired pointer went missing in early August in a Macedon pine plantation, when she and another family dog ran off. Although her family, from Toorak, found their other dog, they’ve not been able to track down Freo. Owner Melanie Hay went on the Australian Facebook page of German short-haired pointer lovers looking for assistance, and was met with a rush of kindness. The online community was mobilised to spread the word and, within days, a Finding
Freo page was set up, with 300 people joining in the first 48 hours. Searchers even camped out, using drones for surveillance, and volunteer Jessica Thomas has called for more people to help with flyer drops around the Macedon Ranges. “Dogs don’t get lost often in the bush … they normally get lost in suburbia, so we’ve had to go the extra mile for this search,” Ms Thomas said. “Freo’s story has captured all of our hearts. “We’re being led by a vet, and that’s helped us understand some of the behaviour she’s exhibiting. “Freo is incredibly affectionate, with high energy, but she’s very loving and she’s no doubt very scared. “We’re hoping she’s been able to look out for herself out there. It’s been 12 weeks, so we

think that she might be going a bit wild now. Although Freo is a friendly dog, she will more than likely be hungry and frightened.” Fellow volunteer and Facebook campaign manager Melanie Pittard established a GoFundMe crowdfunding campaign, which to date has raised more than $4000 to hire equipment to find Freo. “There have been sightings so we know she’s alive, but she is skinny, scared and in need of urgent help,” Ms Pittard said. “We also want some funds for possible vet bills and even a possible reward. “She’s been out there alone for too long … we need to find her.” Ms Pittard says any leftover funds will go to German short-haired pointer rescue groups. If you see Freo, call Kat on 0434 987 757.

Voters want council ‘connection’ Macedon Ranges residents hope to see some “fresh blood” in their new council as they await the latest election results. Seventy-two councils held postal elections, while another six had residents going to the polls last Saturday. Macedon Ranges Residents Association secretary Christine Pruneau said the community had high expectations of the new council. “It’s about getting some commonality of purpose while having diversity as well,” Ms
Pruneau said. “We’ve had councillors who all thought the same way and most of the community don’t like the direction they’ve taken us. We would like to see the new council connect back to the community … defer to the community in everything it does and improve governance by being more transparent. “The new council has to be a reflection of the community, not a bunch of people that do whatever they want. The exciting part is that there seems to be sufficient people who are running and working together.” Municipal Association of Victoria chief executive Rob Spence said early results
statewide showed a strong vote for incumbents, indicating people were happy with their councillors’ performance. However, he said, voter turnout seemed low with “election fatigue” thought to play a part. A high number of candidates – 27 in Macedon Ranges for nine vacancies – could also affect the outcome. Mr Spence said it would be interesting to see whether the long list would confuse voters and result in more informal votes. Hume and Macedon Ranges attracted big fields of candidates for last weekend’s elections. There were 14 nominations for three vacancies
Life on the beat ‘tougher’ 40 years on Gisborne Senior Sergeant Paul Cliffe believes Victoria is a much tougher place now, compared to when he started on the beat 40 years ago. He and two fellow senior officers, Sergeant Leo Van Andel (pictured) and Leading Senior Constable Kevin Oakley, all marked their four decades of service last week. Senior Sergeant Cliffe said although it hasn’t always been easy, it wasn’t a hard decision to stay in the force so long. “It’s just something that we’ve all done, and that’s just the way it was,” he said. “You meet people who have been plumbers their whole lives, builders or mechanics. I entered the police and stayed with it. “It’s a lot harder now and it’s pretty risky for police. People don’t give respect, and you can get spat at and hurt at any time when you’re out on the beat. You see a lot more drugs and weapons than when I first started.” His deployments have varied, with most of his career spent at Broadmeadows, a decade as sergeant at Flemington and a number of years spent at Melbourne central branches. Senior Sergeant Cliffe also remembers fondly his time in the Solomon Islands with the Australian Federal Police. “We were based in the Solomons for the Ramsi mission, rebuilding police services and hospitals. It one of the best things I’ve done … working with the people over there. It’s a small place, but there was a lot of tension.” All three officers were honoured at a special event at Parliament House where Police minister Lisa Neville congratulated them on their longstanding dedication. In all, 242 serving Victorian police officers have more than 40 years logged up. These officers have witnessed revolutionary changes in modern crime fighting, including the introduction of random breath-testing, drug testing and DNA profiling, Ms Neville said. “Each officer has a different story, and many have witnessed crucial changes in the way crime is investigated.” Esther Lauaki
Groups tackle addictions together It’s often the families and friends of people abusing drugs and alcohol that need most support, with their loved ones caught up in addictions. Sunbury Community Health is hosting two free information and support sessions next month for people who want to help family or friends who are struggling with addictions. Program facilitator Tracey Alder said the six-week action recovery course (ARC) starts on November 2 at the centre, and focuses on understanding drug and alcohol use, and abuse. “It provides you with knowledge and skills to better understand addiction,” Ms Alder said. “It explores ways of improving your relationships, and offers techniques to cope with anxiety and stress. “[The course] covers topics such as boundaries, guilt, worry, communication, acceptance, and includes a comprehensive workbook of strategies to support change for families.” Sunbury Support Group is an ongoing monthly support program. Ms Alder said group sessions focus on the wellbeing of the families involved, helping them learn about addiction and addictive behaviour, and giving them strategies for coping with addictive behaviours. Attendees share stories and learn from each other. The ARC runs from 6pm to 8pm on Mondays, while the Sunbury Support Group meets on the first Monday of each month, 6-8pm. Bookings are essential. in Hume’s Jacksons Creek ward this year – up from 10 candidates in 2012. Incumbents Jack Medcraft and Ann Potter stood again, while veteran councillor Jack Ogilvie stepped down after 26 years because of poor health. Current mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou (Meadow Valley) also stepped down after eight years on council. Final results will be declared at 10am Monday, October 31. “We have to wait for five working days for all postal votes to be received by midday Friday, October 28,” Victorian Electoral Commission spokesman Mike Lagastes said.

Sunbury Secondary College students will get their “15 minutes of fame at the school’s upcoming arts extravaganza. Show Off, on November 22 and 23, will showcase students’ art, music, digital productions, performance, food and fashion throughout the year. Design and technology teacher Lisa Wills says the free event, now in its seventh year, helps students benchmark their work in real-time. “Show Show Off incorporates the whole notion about following something through to the end, Ms Wills says. “It’s all about authentic learning and giving them a real life experience. “It gives students the opportunity to showcase their talents. We’ve got some really creative kids, and this is a way to show what you otherwise wouldn’t see. We want to promote creativity because, in today’s world, creativity can be what makes you different. The theme of this year’s Show Off is ‘The 60s – have your 15 minutes of fame’, a highlight of which will be the students’ fashion parade. “The parade is organised entirely by fashion students in year 11, Ms Wills says. “They start planning for it at the beginning of the year, and they’ve worked on it since then. They each have a role to perform, whether it be directing, looking for models, working behind the scenes. Show Off will be 6.30-9pm both nights. Tickets available at the school.

Sunbury part of Ford history Roz and John Bradbury paid just over double the selling price to buy the last Ford Falcon XR6 sedan produced in Australia. And Roz, who owns Sunbury Ford, says having a piece of the country’s automobile history is worth every cent she spent. The Saturday afternoon auction came after Ford shut down its Broadmeadows plant this month. Mr and Mrs Bradbury paid $122,000 to buy a winter white Sprint XR6 Ford Falcon sedan – the last of the 500 models to roll off the plant. The sedan is usually priced at $65,000. The couple also picked up a smoke grey Ford Falcon ute XR6 for $82,000 – a mere $17,000 above the recommended retail price. The American auto giant also auctioned a silver Territory for $68,500 and a Ford blue XR6 Falcon sedan for $81,500. Ford raised $353,000 from the auction, which has been earmarked for the company’s robotics programs in Geelong and Broadmeadows. Mr Bradbury said the Avalon Airport auction attracted about 1000 people. He said the couple had no intention to buy when they went to the auction, but got swept up in the excitement. “It was very emotional,” he said. “There were so many people in the room.” Mrs Bradbury said the Ford Falcon ute was “incredibly powerful” and “much sought after”. She said she will display her last Fords at the Sunbury showroom. “To have the last ever ute produced at Broadmeadows is something we are very proud of,” Mrs Bradbury said. “It is the very last of the iconic car … [we saw] an opportunity to purchase a piece of Australian history.” The Age Roz and John Bradbury with their Sprint XR6 Ford Falcon sedan. Road works to add to delays Four major road projects under way around the shire may cause some delays for Macedon Ranges drivers next month. Several footpath, road and drainage infrastructure projects have already started or are about to begin as part of the council‘s works program. Assets and operations director Dale Thornton said stage two road reconstruction works at Sandy Creek Road, Riddells Creek would add an extra 764 metres of 6.6 metre-wide road seal on the existing surface, valued at $160,000. “Road renewal works will begin shortly in Smith Street and Victoria Street, Macedon,” Mr Thornton said, including the entrance to Macedon railway station carpark. “The road pavement will be rehabilitated and a new 6.6 metre wide asphalt surface will be applied.” Mr Thornton said Couangalt Road at South Gisborne would get a $390,000 reconstruction from the intersection of Benson and McGeorge Roads, east to Heard Crescent. “Fisher Street, Gisborne, will have $110,000 in kerb and channel and minor asphalt works on the north side … works will aim to improve site drainage in the area. Council will aim to minimise overall disruption to the community during the works,” Mr Thornton said. He said all four projects would be completed next month, weather permitting. Esther Lauaki

Call to cut fecund felines Reducing the numbers of abandoned and unwanted cats and kittens is the target of a low-cost desexing and microchipping session in Sunbury. Hume council and The Lost Dogs’ Home have joined forces to tackle the breeding cat population for three days, until Thursday October 27, at Sunbury Neighbourhood House. Residents will be able to take moggies to be desexed and microchipped for the subsidised cost of $50. Healthcare cardholders can have the service provided for free. Hume chief executive Domenic Isola said the council is hoping as many as 75 cats will
be desexed as part of the initiative, which was set up to reduce the large numbers of unwanted kittens born across the municipality every year. “Cats can breed very quickly,” Mr Isola said. “With the summer breeding season almost upon us, there is no better time to desex your cat. I call on residents who own a cat that is not desexed and microchipped to book a time to attend, and take advantage of council’s cost-saving offer.” Bookings are essential: www.trybooking. com/NFOQ Esther Lauaki

Traffic troubles in the northern suburbs require a new link between Craigieburn and Sunbury, according to federal McEwen MP Rob Mitchell. Mr Mitchell has written to Hume council proposing an extension of Craigieburn Road to connect with Melbourne-Lancefield Road to help ease traffic congestion. “An extension of Craigieburn Road [west] through to Sunbury would lead to better connectivity between these two residential centres, which would in turn make sharing important services more convenient for our constituents,” Mr Mitchell wrote. “It could also alleviate traffic issues on Sunbury Road and through Bulla while providing another route to access the [Calder] highway.” Hume council chief executive Dominic Isola said properties would have to go if a link was built. “Such a proposal would be difficult to achieve due to difficult topography and lack of a readily available route. The road reserve for Craigieburn Road ends at Deep Creek, so a link could not be achieved without … acquisition.” Mr Isola said the council’s preferred option for improving access between the two towns was to construct the proposed Bulla Bypass. “This [would] extend the alignment on Somerton Road to the west over Deep Creek and create a high-standard road link between Sunbury and areas in the east of Hume.” The planned bypass and link to Melbourne Airport was opposed by Planning Minister Richard Wynne, who rejected the advice of a panel of planning experts that land for the freeway be reserved now for future compulsory acquisition. He said the proposed route would create hardship for properties in its path and risked making equestrian farms unviable.

MY PLACE Noel Harvey is a people person to the core. He’s served in most areas of Macedon Ranges’ community life, and spoke to Esther Lauaki about his pursuits and passions. It has been my home for nearly 40 years; my children were born in the old hospital, and were educated in local schools. Both my parents are buried here, so I guess that makes me a local. How long have you lived in the area? We moved here 38 years ago in the first wave of tree-changers, although in those days we were called alternative lifestylers and hippies. I built my own mud-brick home in Kyneton. How did you become involved in tourism? I became involved in Macedon Ranges Tourism Association in the early ’90s; from there I landed in the role of chair of the regional campaign committee, for seven years during the mid ’90s. I was asked by Tourism Victoria to help establish the new regional tourism board and took on the role of interim chair for 12 months. I was appointed back to that position four years ago to re-build the organisation. What other hats do you wear? My first community role was on the kindergarten committee. Since that time I have had an involvement with numerous local organisations – schools, the museum, church, business association, saleyards, airfield, Daffodil Festival, Friends of East Timor, arts, ALP, Kyneton theatre company, community radio … and many others. I have had a 20-year involvement in local government with the shire of Kyneton, Hepburn and Macedon Ranges
following council amalgamations. I served for 18 years on the hospital board, seven as chair. I spent 10 years as deputy chair of Coliban Water, as well as being on the board of the catchment management authority. I spent seven years on the board of Parks Victoria, including a stint as chairman. I was privileged to receive a medal in the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2004 for services to local government, regional Victoria and the community of Kyneton. What is something others don’t know about you? Despite being trained in economics, I have worked for 15 years in environmental restoration; I fly an aerochute, which is a parachute with a motor; I am a keen photographer, and, I have a passion for Bangladesh, particularly the poor regional communities in the north. What is it that you love most about this community? The passionate and engaged people that make up the many communities of Macedon Ranges, as well as the stunning environment that we are privileged to live in. My local community is constantly changing which sometimes creates tensions, but community spirit is an intangible that defines who we are. There are so many amazing people quietly serving their community, and this makes the Macedon Ranges and, in particular, my community of Kyneton, a very, very special place.

Be Fire Ready. THE REASONS ARE BLACK AND WHITE.
Fire Action Week The Right Time To Prepare
Message from the Premier This summer is forecast to be a dangerous fire season. Fire Action Week is the time for all Victorians to get ready for the heat ahead. Many Victorians have been battling persistent rain and rising flood waters. This rainfall has increased growth of vegetation in forested, bush and grassfire areas across the state. As summer intensifies, these regions will dry out quickly, increasing the risk of uncontrollable fires, especially over Christmas and summer holidays. Emergency services are working with communities, businesses, councils and government to reduce risks in your area, while ensuring resources are in place to respond to all emergencies. However, it is up to you to understand the risks in your area, monitor conditions and take responsibility for your own safety and the safety of your household. Be prepared before summer so you know what to do when a fire starts.
Talk to your family and friends about how you’ll know when to leave, and where to go to stay safe. Leaving early means leaving before a fire starts – not when you can see flames or smell smoke. Leaving early means avoiding panic, and not making wrong decisions that could be dire. Use Fire Action Week to prepare your home and property, especially if you live in bush and grassfire prone areas. If you take the right steps now, your decisions in an emergency will be easier and clearer. • Talk to your household and neighbours about what you’ll do on high risk days, and have a plan if fire threatens you and your home this summer • Check fire danger ratings daily at emergency.vic.gov.au to find out how dangerous a fire would be if one started, and monitor warnings, especially when the fire danger rating is severe, extreme or code red • Pack an emergency kit of essentials
The Hon Daniel Andrews MP Premier of Victoria
1. Plan what you’ll do in the event of a fire, talk to your household and know where to access information on high risk days. 2. Keep grass short. Fire can ignite and travel quickly through long grass. 3. Get rid of dry grass, leaves, twigs and loose bark around your home. 4. Remove or prune shrubs near windows and well away from branches of mature trees. 5. Cut back overhanging tree branches close to property – no branches within 10 metres. 6. Keep gutters and roof areas clear of leaf litter (if you are physically able to). 7. Remove all materials from around the home that could burn, such as boxes, furniture and woodpiles.

Bone up on skeletal health O
steoporosis, known by some as brittle-bone disease, affects more than one million Australians, according to manager of Lake Imaging in Sunbury, Chris Proctor. “This ‘silent disease’ occurs as a result of mineral loss, particularly calcium,” Mr Proctor explains. “Bones become weakened and more susceptible to breaks, or partial breaks, often without large injuries. Left undiagnosed, patients with osteoporosis face long recovery times from fractures, and ongoing pain and discomfort.” Early diagnosis of the condition in high-risk patients is vital as there are treatment options to suspend progression, maintain bone density and reduce the incidence of fractures. Women are at greater risk of developing the condition, and everyone older than 50 needs to consider these key risk factors:
Osteoporosis Australia recommends that people over 50 with risk factors should discuss having a bone density scan with their referring doctor.
Lake Imaging has the right technology to create a thorough bone density scan report. (Supplied)
“A simple, 15-minute bone density scan using our state-of-the-art scanner is all that’s needed,” Mr Proctor adds. “We’ll then prepare a report for the referring doctor who can discuss with the patient, when needed, options to improve bone health to prevent fractures in the future.” Concession cardholders who are
considered high risk and meet Medicare criteria are bulk-billed for bone density examinations. “Bone tests or heel ultrasounds commonly promoted in pharmacies and shopping centres are inaccurate and not endorsed by professional organisations,” Mr Proctor cautions. “These tests are
not eligible for a Medicare rebate and can be more costly than an accurate, recommended bone density examination.” Lake Imaging, 17-19 Horne Street, Sunbury. Opens 8.30am-6pm, Monday-Friday and 8am-noon Saturday. Inquiries: 9744 5344 or www.lakeimaging.com.au

Our customers never ... get a bill they weren’t expecting – except if it’s less.
W
hen Adrian and Andrea Matthews saw a potential problem combined with a realisation of the value of their shared skill set, the couple’s future direction was decided. Adrian, who with wife Andrea owns The Garage Woodend, explains: “Andrea had just finished a role at Holden in the city and wasn’t keen to continue with her lengthy commute. I’d been working at a local workshop but wanted to better utilise all the experience I’d gained from 25 years’ working on European vehicles.” Adrian also realised, after talking to many drivers of European models, that Essendon, Werribee or South Melbourne workshops were meeting their repair and servicing needs because of the scarcity of local services. The pair soon scouted out a spankingnew unit a few minutes’ walk from the station and High Street. Equipped with all the latest gear, including computer diagnostic tools, they opened The Garage Woodend’s doors in July, 2014. Andrea takes up the story: “In six months, we’d grown so quickly we needed to sign a lease on the next-door unit. “Today, we employ four highly experienced technicians and are known as having the cleanest garage around!” The Matthews team (which also works on models other than European) attributes their success to not only first-class workmanship but transparent service quotes and scrupulously fair assessments. “Sometimes,” says Andrea, “we might quote a customer based on expected repair

time, but if a job actually takes less time than prepared for, we adjust the bill to reflect that. “Our aim is to ensure customers never arrive to collect their cars and get a bill they weren’t expecting – except if it’s less.” All vehicle services include a full safety check and any issues found are reported back to the customer with a
recommendation to repair, if needed, or to monitor at the next service. The Garage Woodend also has a free vehicle collection and drop-off service, by arrangement, within Woodend, Macedon and Mount Macedon. Adrian and Andrea are looking to continue expanding and growing their team, hoping to achieve this by training their own apprentices.

Carpet Court has got you covered N
ot only do Darren Palmer and Shelley Craft of The Block fame have signature flooring ranges at Carpet Court, but Chris and Kim, among this season’s contestants, chose Carpet Court’s wonderful Redbrook Green carpet for their winning main bedroom. Christine Taylor, who, with husband Peter, owns Carpet Court in Sunbury, Gisborne and Kyneton, says Redbrook Green is but one of many stylish options available, ranging from affordable to high-end. “We really do stock beautiful flooring,” she says, “which is such an important design element in any home. And there are ways to achieve a great look without the budget The Block contestants enjoy. “If money’s not the first consideration, our Real Living collection of grainy, knotty European timbers with micro-bevelled edges and matt finish is a stunning match with contemporary, industrial and modern country looks. “But, for a fraction of the price, our Laneway vinyl planks beautifully recreate timber or natural stone. This is a fab choice for young families, because they’re crafted for high-traffic areas with their impact and scratch resistance – and they’re whisper quiet to walk on.” With Christmas on the horizon, many are thinking of sprucing up their homes. Sometimes all it takes to introduce a new look is a well-chosen rug – which is not to say you can’t go the whole hog on new carpet, floorboards and blinds. Carpet Court Sunbury has expert tradesmen who can complete any flooring or window project

to a high standard – and measure and quote is free. Rugs in the Darren Palmer Provincial collection are all about taupes and charcoal – there’s one in grey that looks like a gorgeous home-knit woolly. These rugs tap into prevalent interior colour palettes. The Carpet Court collection is bolder and very diverse. The well-named Urban rug, with a hint of art deco shapes in shades of blue and other beachy colours, would pair beautifully with Carpet Court’s Easy White tile. It’s just one of many ceramic and porcelain tiles that range through charcoal, greys, coffee and sandstone hues. The experts at each store are happy to help. Care that gets you fit for parenthood D
iscovering you’re pregnant is an exciting and sometimes daunting revelation. There are lots of questions and plenty of unsolicited advice – not all of it helpful. To get your pregnancy off to a good start, Djerriwarrh Health Services director of nursing Amanda Edwards offers these five useful tips:
2. You are living for two, but it’s not necessary to eat for both of you Minimise the consumption of processed foods, such as takeaway or pre-made meals. Instead, eat fresh fruit, vegetables, protein, and foods with high iron levels to help avoid anaemia. Djerriwarrh Health Services dietician Renee Del Gross recommends women should ensure they get enough folic acid, and aim to gain only 12 kilograms during their pregnancies. 3. There are some foods and toxins you should avoid during pregnancy • Consume moderate levels of caffeine (including soft and energy drinks). • Avoid cigarette smoke – exposure to one cigarette inhibits your capacity, and baby’s, to process oxygen for up to 90 minutes.
(Supplied)
1. Choose a doctor or midwife to care for you during your pregnancy It’s recommended you have your first pregnancy care visit at about 12 weeks. Consulting with your GP as soon as possible will help you choose and book a hospital that best suits your needs.
• Avoid alcohol – it can lead to the development of foetal alcohol syndrome (intellectual disability) – it is advisable to abstain completely during pregnancy. • Some medications, even those available over the counter, should be avoided. Consult your pharmacist or doctor before taking any medication. • Avoid all illicit drugs. • Avoid certain foods, such as undercooked eggs, rare meat, sushi (raw fish), seafood and soft cheeses, as they potentially
harbour the bacteria listeria, which causes toxoplasmosis. 4. Keep fit Labour is called labour for a reason – maintaining fitness will help during the birthing process. 5. Sleep Develop regular sleeping patterns in order to ensure seven or eight hours’ sleep a night.
For more detailed information about pregnancy care, call the maternity care team at Bacchus Marsh & Melton Regional Hospital on 5367 9615. Tours of the new and improved maternity services unit at Bacchus Marsh & Melton Regional Hospital will take place between 10am and noon on the fourth Saturday of every month, or call to make a private appointment.

This makes it fun and exciting for kids, who think they’re playing games but are actually learning defensive techniques, body evasion and awareness skills. “As for adults, our senior coaches bring more than 25 years experience in Martial Arts, and are proficient in engaging each student.” Shihan David Zarb, who is head of style, with more than 48 years experience, oversees the entire syllabus for Karate and Kung-Fu, and all coaching techniques, as well as assessments. “Having Shihan David in-house and coaching each week is a wonderful experience and opportunity,” Amelia says. “It’s not common to learn from a Master in any style. And our students also regularly train with our Masters in Taiwan, who visit us here, too.” Beginners and newcomers are promised a warm welcome, and the first two sessions are free, as are uniforms, once signed up. ne of the directors of Art of Defence, Sensei Amelia Zarb, says Martial Arts are a great equaliser that can benefit everyone. “People can become involved in Martial Arts whatever their age, gender or fitness level,” explains Amelia, who teaches alongside Shihan David Zarb, the international director of Art of Defence. “We teach two styles – Goju Ryu Karate-Do, a relatively new Japanese Martial Art in that it’s been taught for only 200 years or so; and Cheng Ming Internal Kung Fu (Tai Chi), a Martial Art from China that’s thousands of years old.” Fast, exciting and challenging, Karate is ideal for young people, while Tai Chi is perfect for adults of any age, state of health or disposition. Amelia says both styles provide huge benefits in physical and mental wellbeing, fitness levels, body conditioning, self-defence skills and overall confidence and self-esteem. These styles are also effective for toning nerves; learning to deal with outcomes outside your comfort zone; overcoming stress, anxiety and depression; and learning to deal with pain, grief and chronic ailments, such as arthritis. Art of Defence uses modern coaching skills, and Amelia says all students are encouraged to be the best they can be. “Students learn at different rates and in differing ways. Some are visual, some are auditory, some kinaesthetic (doing), and some are a mix of all three. “In many, many years of training, we’ve developed game-sense skill work for

olton Motorcycles, started 32 years ago in humble beginnings in the small High Street shop in Kyneton, now tendered as the Kyneton Pizza and Wine Club. The business was started by Bruce and his wife, Toni, and now employees 17 experienced people. The showroom team consists of Belinda and Matt doing an excellent job managing the workshop and Dan looks after finance and reception – and is also responsible for creating the witty banter on the website. Fred has more than 20 years experience in the motorcycle industry, and along with Chris and Alex, can get you on the right bike as the knowledgeable sales and spares team, and KTM spares and accessories manager, Drew, holds together the title of the business as Australia’s number one KTM spare parts dealer. The workshop team has experience unparallel to any other, with Ash and Will in the bike workshop, and in the power equipment worksop, Ken, Chris, Brenden, Rick and Tony, along with Jim, always keeping the delivery driving exciting. Owner Bruce has been into bikes since he was 11 years old – trail riding, touring and racing. He’s done a few desert rallies, across the Simpson for example, and won the Mallee Rally one year. Now it’s son Alex who is the rider, an off-road racer who has been in the top 10 of the pro class for the past four years. He also works at the family business. omplete Skin Specialists in Sunbury expanded its clinic this month, opening premises next door to the existing medical and surgical dermatology practice to provide a separate but interlinked focus on cosmetic skin treatments. Doctors and business partners Belinda Welsh and Cara McDonald say that while they will continue to provide specialist care in the original clinic for all types of skin conditions (acne, rosacea, psoriasis, eczema and skin cancers, et al), the increased space for the cosmetic treatment arm will prove a boon to locals. Dr Welsh says they’ve seen a rise in demand for specialist attention to cosmetic skin concerns. “Our patients particularly seek an environment that offers safe, expert treatments from highly skilled professionals,” she says. “We believe we provide cosmetic and rejuvenation treatments like no other, and we can make this claim because of our extensive training in skin, anatomy and the process of ageing. “All our cosmetic therapists continue to work one-on-one with dermatologist to enhance their already-extensive training.” Dr McDonald adds that their patients enjoy a unique skin-care experience. “They have every aspect of their skin assessed and managed appropriately,” she explains. “This includes a full discussion regarding rejuvenation options, such as resurfacing lasers, cosmetic injectables and surgical options. treatment for skin inflammations, such as rosacea, are all part of our services menu.” A specialist dermatologist for 20 years, Dr Welsh has a special interest in dermatology, treating acne scarring, wrinkles, sun damage and pigmentation to rejuvenate skin with the clinic’s fractional CO2 Laser. Also a specialist dermatologist, Dr McDonald has expertise in cosmetic injectables and a special interest in treatment of facial ageing to produce a natural, refreshed look. Dermal therapists Belinda Fraser and Jemma Quiambao, along with registered division-one cosmetic nurse Tennele Bottrell, are other important, highly experienced members of the team. Right now, the clinic is offering Rationale medical-grade enzyme reactivator peels for $90, with the sixth peel free. And there’s a hair reduction laser treatment, with the second area at half price and the third at quarter price. Complete Skin Specialists, 35-39 Station Street, Sunbury. ustralia’s manufacturing sector has taken a beating of late, but when Scott Vernon opened Evolve Windows in Sunbury earlier this month, he countered the trends with clear goals in mind – use as many quality Aussie-made manufacturing materials as possible, give praise-winning service … and, importantly, deliver on time. Scott says the aluminium extrusions and some of the major components in their windows and doors are made here in Melbourne. “We try to source as many local products and use local suppliers as much as we can,” he says. “Our focus is on quality, durability, high-end workmanship and a more personalised service.” The Evolve crew fabricates the highly regarded Architectural Window System (AWS) range of aluminium windows and doors for both residential and commercial applications. The AWS range includes Vantage, Elevate and ThermalHeart brands – innovative, architecturally inspired, sustainable systems that exceed Australian standards. Scott says their architecturally designed windows set them apart, and clients’ needs are met with a flexible approach. “All windows are fully customised and we manufacture them to suit exact requirements,” he says. “People are starting to realise the value in spending money to change existing windows to new, energy-efficient windows.
This results in greater comfort, noise reduction and reduced energy bills – as well as updating the look.” Using single or double glazing and high performance glass, the window and door range includes: • Residential sliding windows and doors, including stacker sliding doors • Residential awning and casement windows • Hinged entry doors and bifold doors • ThermalHeart performance windows • Commercial windows and doors • Security doors Domestic and commercial glazing and flyscreens are also provided, and Evolve specialises in swapping existing windows and doors for more energy-efficient versions. Scott says he’s looking forward to providing advice and quotes for all kinds of projects that may be in a customer’s pipeline, whether it’s a residential refurbishment or new build, or new commercial premises, or upgrades. Sounds like a good starting point for your next project will be the new showroom, where products can be viewed, advice offered and stories swapped. It’s currently under construction and due to open later this year, just behind Masters. Evolve Windows, 18A Kurrle Road, Sunbury. Opens 8am-4pm Monday-Friday. Fourteen-year-old Kytoria borrows from the Federation era for its pretty kerbside looks and, with period-saluting elegance inside and award-winning gardens out back, it makes a fine family home, or even a B&B venture. It’s on a big corner block, with a side gate vehicle entrance and a double garage/workshop in the backyard, making it tempting for a tradie. There are four large bedrooms, the main with walk-in wardrobe and en suite. The main bathroom has a clawfoot tub. A carpeted lounge room has french doors to one of three verandahs, as does a living-dining room with floorboards that flows into a family-meals area and kitchen. The modern-country kitchen has a walk-in pantry, 900mm cooker and stacks of storage. Natural gas ducted heating, split-system, two water tanks, hothouse and remote-controlled double carport are inclusions. Piper Street café precinct is a stroll away.
In a spot with birdsong the only sound accompanying the peace, this fab Jeske-built residence is truly a private retreat. On about 0.8 hectares that include fenced pony paddocks and well-kept gardens, the house has three bedrooms, the main stretching from front to back, with a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. A lovely living room with timber cathedral ceiling has floorboards that flow through to the kitchen, meals room and, through double doors, the family room. The large kitchen is a contemporary grey-and-white affair, with all mod-cons. A wood heater, split-system and electric panel heaters provide climate control. Outdoors, find a large machinery shed with concrete floor and power, kids’ playground, water tanks (town water also connected) and a double carport.

Price: $1.280 million – $1.4 million
Constructed of Mount Gambier limestone, this 36-square house, along with the grounds of 3544 square metres, is a worthy contender for the wow tag. Everything about this place has an innate contemporary elegance, tempered with the earthiness of that wonderful limestone on show in a couple of rooms and the rich timberwork of another. The cream, white and charcoal colour palette is beautifully expressed; warm-white roman blinds dress the windows; and cornice and ceiling plasterwork is finely crafted. Entry is under a porte cochere to an expansive entry hall where the house’s personality is announced. Ornate dropped

cornices on a 2.7-metre ceiling, an on-trend designer light fitting and french bevelled doors (to a generously fitted study) paint a pleasing picture. The large living hub includes a carpeted sitting area, casual meals zone (with access to wraparound verandah), and duel-entry dining room with jarrah parquetry flooring. The big, timeless black and cream kitchen has granite benches and splashbacks, an underbench wine rack, corner pantry and Smeg appliances. An extra-big entertainment room (off the hub) has at one end a carpeted theatre zone with raised seating platforms and surround-sound; at the other end is a
timber wet bar and polished concrete flooring. The bedroom wing includes another living room through french doors; with painted dado panels and a four-door closet, this could also serve as guest bedroom. Three bedrooms share a sleek spa bathroom, while the main has walk-through (enclosed) wardrobes and an en suite where smoky-charcoal glass forms splashback and screen for the walk-in shower, and dual basins are set in granite. This main bedroom is beautifully lit, courtesy of four garden-view windows. Indoor perks are zoned evaporative cooling, underfloor heating throughout, split-systems and ducted vacuum.

The back garden continues the same fab formality seen out front. A gazebo perches between a lit tennis court (and skateboard concrete heaven) and fenced, solar-heated salt pool. An automated watering system fed from a bore keeps the quite minimalist gardens looking shmick. Tucked behind a hedge is a huge Colorbond workshop with three-phase power and five roller doors; this is attached to a high-access four-six vehicle carport. The champion spread is four minutes by car to the village, 30 to the airport and within an easy city commute. Carole Levy

“ETHICS AND REAL ESTATE”
$407,000
Sadly there has been another report of unethical behaviour in Real Estate. This time a well known, prominent Franchise has been heavily fined for ‘Under ‘Under-quoting’ house prices. I am so glad that, at last, unethical practices by Real Estate Agents are being policed and I would like to think that a more vigilant approach is being taken by Consumer Affairs Af into the activities of Real Estate Practices.
40 Acres of prime farmland. This property has it all. Situated on the Kyneton Baynton Road just 10 minutes from the Kyneton township and the freeway, this stunning
Just an hour north of the city, this could be your perfect escape to the country! • Main road frontage • Magnificent views • 5 dams and a 6 MEG water right, ample water for irrigation • Fertile soil suitable for grazing, cropping or horticulture • 650 mature olive grove with irrigation infrastructure in place
Please remember that most Real Estate Agents are working hard and are “doing the right thing” but as in every industry, there are some “bad apples”. I have noticed a new phenomenon rearing its head with some Agents and that is “Over Pricing”. This is of course a tricky area. We all would like to think that our home is worth ‘heaps!’. In reality a property is worth what a purchaser is willing to pay for it and what a good negotiator (your agent) can achieve - within the relms of possibility. Please remember that a bank valuation will be required if finance is needed to complete the purchase and, if over-priced, over the valuation will not pass and the contract may well “fall over”. Under-pricing, Under Over Overpricing and Unethical practices will cause heartache to many and an even greater level of distrust in Real Estate Agents.

SPORT Drawn game controversy By Tara Murray What seemed a straightforward win for Ashfield over Bacchus Marsh has ended in controversy. Ashfield has asked the Gisborne and District Cricket Association to investigate what went wrong in the only B-grade match to be played on Saturday. Scores lodged afterwards had both teams on 187 runs, and the match outcome a draw. This was despite Ashfield still having six balls left in its final innings, with seven wickets in hand. Ashfield had thought the match was theirs, with the scoreboard showing them one run up when Jason King fell for 78. Ashfield captain-coach Ryan Pretty was at the crease with King at the time. Pretty said he wanted to play out the final over, to ensure they had the win in case the scoreboard was wrong. “On what ended up being the second last ball of the day, it came off my leg and we ran a leg bye,” Pretty said. “We thought that was the winning run, and their captain was happy to go off and concede. “I was under the impression you still played
for bonus points, but was told by them that once you past the score, stumps are pulled. “They asked the umpire how many balls were left in the over, which was one, and they decided to play out that over. Jas King then went out, and stumps were pulled.”
‘‘
I was under the impression you still played for bonus points - Ryan Pretty
’’
The two teams even shook hands on Ashfield’s win, but while the two scorebooks were being finalised, it was discovered they did not add up with each other, or the scoreboard. Ashfield president Shane Woolley, who would have been the batsman to come in to face the final over, said he believed they should have gone back out and played the final over. He said he and several other players suggested this to Bacchus Marsh several times after the game. Bacchus Marsh president Darren Fowlie said one scorebook had the Bulls one run ahead
while the other had them two runs ahead. “It surprised me they waited until then to make sure the scores were balanced,” Fowlie said. “Both teams spent an hour discussing the result calmly before deciding on the draw and signing off.” He said he thought the drawn result would stay as it was. Woolley said the association has been asked to investigate. “It’s sad if the outcome of the game is a draw,” Woolley said. “There was six legitimate balls left and we wanted to go out and finish the match. “We think it’s unfair that we leave without a win.” Both clubs said it was a disappointing end to what had been a good game. Association president Rob McIntyre said the players should have returned to the field. “There was some confusion between the teams as to whether play should resume … in the end, both captains agreed to a tie,” he said. “Under the laws of cricket, if it is found that there is a mistake with the scores after the players have left the field … then play should resume until there is either a result or the prescribed number of overs have been completed.”
Losing rink, rain drench Sunbury’s hopes Sunbury Bowling Club knew it had a tough task ahead if it was to knock off Altona Sports in Bowls Victorian Pennant, and wet and windy weather only added to the challenge. Bowlers were on and off the green several times in division 1 section 1, with Altona Sports having the better of the day for a 77 (16)-66 (2) scoreline. For Sunbury, one rink proved to be the difference, with Mark Cowan’s rink losing 27-12. Brad Janner’s rink was one shot up heading into the final end, but Sports picked up four shots to win 17-14. Elise Cowan’s rink lost 21-17, but Carla Kriznanic’s rink won for the first time this season, 23-12. Sunbury’s David Glennon said the weather made a difficult task so much harder. “They had to stop seven or eight times due to the rain,” Glennon said. “It’s difficult at the best of times without that. The synthetic green, coupled with the conditions, made it harder than usual.” Only three games in their division went ahead, with Deer Park getting its first win of the season, while Fitzroy Victoria was too good for Moonee Valley. Sunbury faces Moonee Valley this week. “We play them at home,” Glennon said. “It’s very important with the ladder so close. Preston-Reservoir picked up nine points without bowling, which helps them in trying to avoid relegation. They’re really depleted this year.” Sunbury now sits in eighth spot, 14 points behind Melton. It was a mixed day for Sunbury’s other teams. The division 3 section 2 side, division 4 section 1 and division 7 section 4 teams all had their matches called off. All three matches were due to be played at Sunbury. Teams were awarded nine points each. With Broadmeadows forfeiting, Sunbury’s fifth team was awarded the win in division 7 section 3, while Sunbury (4) lost to Aberfeldie CBC (3), 105 (16)-59 (2). Tara Murray
John Coe was part of Sunbury’s winning rink on Saturday. (Shawn Smits)
Trentham’s Bernie Halpin gets a shot down in between the rain on Saturday. (Shawn Smits)
Trentham cops a big bowls thumping Bowlers from six teams managed to negotiate the rain and windy weather in the Centrals Highlands Bowls division 1 on Saturday. With most sport in the area called off, bowlers bucked the trend at Bacchus Marsh, Kyneton and Woodend. Travelling to Bacchus Marsh, Trentham was easily beaten in what nevertheless turned out to be the closest match of the round. Bacchus Marsh won three rinks in the 112 (16)-82 (2) win on a day when the sun was out one minute and there was rain the next. Trentham won the fourth rink 24-22, but only after a late comeback from 10 shots down. Reigning premier Kyneton Golf finally got its first win for the season. After an upset loss against Trentham the previous week, Golf was back to the form that earned it the past two premierships. Romsey was the unlucky side to face them. Golf won all four rinks, in a massive 125 (18)-78 (0) win. Adrian Plowman’s rink won 42-19. Kyneton’s win against Woodend was almost as emphatic. On the back of Craig Vincent’s rink, which won 44-6, Kyneton won 115 (16)-69 (2). The match between unbeaten sides Lancefield and Gisborne ended in a draw after it was washed out. Both teams were awarded nine points. Lancefield remains on top of the ladder, four points clear of Gisborne, with Bacchus Marsh a further two points back. Kyneton rounds out the top four, with all teams but Romsey having at least one win in the first three rounds. All matches in divisions 2 and 3 were washed out. Meanwhile, Lancefield’s Bev Holmes and Michael Linehan have become the competition’s over-60 singles champions. The finals of the competition were held at Bacchus Marsh on Thursday. It was the first time Holmes had competed in the over-60 age group. She defeated three Bacchus Marsh opponents on the way to the title, beating Joyce Porter 21-14 in the final. Linehan had to come from behind against Gisborne’s John Bell. Scores were level at 20-20 before Linehan drew a close ball directly behind the jack to win. Tara Murray

Blues sign Thunder teammates as training starts up Towards the end of the inaugural AFL women’s draft, Jess Kennedy received a call from someone at Carlton. “They said that if your name isn’t called out at the draft, we would like to sign you as one of our free agents,” Kennedy said last week. “The end of the draft then rolled round, and my name wasn’t called out. I was thinking ‘you made me sit through two and half hours of the draft – a heads-up would have been nice’.” The Blues announced after the draft that they had signed Kennedy and her Bendigo Thunder teammate Hayley Trevean as free agents. Kennedy said the Blues were one of two clubs, the other Collingwood, who had spoken to her before the draft.
She said while she was happy to go anywhere, going to the Blues with Thunder teammates Trevean, Isabella Ayre and Sarah Last was a thrill. “I’m stoked I’m not going down there alone,” she said. “Would have been happy going elsewhere. Hayley and I started at the Thunder together and she got a similar phone call to me, which was good.” Until five years ago, netball was the sport that took up all of Kennedy’s time. The 26-year-old, who grew up in Craigieburn, made her name in the midcourt at Lancefield and later Riddell in the Riddell District Netball League. “I went down to a [football] training session
with a friend from uni,” Kennedy said of her foray into football. “It was a sticky, hot day and I thought they were crazy … I never had any intention of playing, but now I’ve never looked back.” For a long time Kennedy thought she’d be able to play netball and football to a high standard. She was part of the Bombers premiership side in 2015 but this year decided to focus on football. “I really felt, giving up netball, I could give it [football] my best crack. “Riddell ended up playing their [2016 netball] grand final, the same day we played in ours at Bendigo Thunder. I was happy I didn’t have to let any one down.”
Kennedy said the biggest benefit for her game the past season was being part of the AFL Women’s Academy. She also won the Bendigo Thunder best and fairest award. “I wasn’t initially in the academy … I was added after I attended a talent search day. “I learnt so much in a short period of time. It set me up with what I needed to do.” Kennedy isn’t the only Carlton recruit with a link to Riddell; Kate Darby played her junior football at the club. Pre-season training will begin next month for the Blues. Kennedy said she expects to do a whole lot of running between now and then. Tara Murray

Rupertswood set a test By Tara Murray Rupertswood proved to be the biggest loser from a weekend of wash-outs in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. Three of the four games were called off due to bad weather, leaving Bacchus Marsh and Rupertswood the only game to go ahead. Rupertswood lost and ended up the only side not to take away any points from the weekend. But Rupertswood captain-coach Mark Ryan said while the way it worked out was disappointing, players would take the chance to play a game of cricket over a wash-out every time. “The weather was okay and we had crack … and the result was disappointing,” he said. “You play cricket to play. It rained in periods and we pushed through.” Ryan said the side didn’t bowl well, and this
put them on the back foot. Bacchus Marsh made 8-194 off its overs. “The toss was crucial and we lost it,” he said. “It was a pretty wet wicket, and we couldn’t get any swing and didn’t bowl well.” Rupertswood lost a wicket on the first ball of the innings – the second time this has happened in three games. “When you’re 1-0 after the first ball, it’s never ideal,” Ryan said. “They bowled really tight and it was hard to score, the pressure was always on, and the run rate crept up.” Ryan (66 not out) was the only batsman to really get going for Rupertswood, which was bowled out for 150. The result leaves Rupertswood with one win from its first three matches. Ryan said players are feeling confident they can match it with the rest of the competition in their first season back in the top division.
44 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 25, 2016
“It has been really good, and all the sides have agreed it has stepped up a level – it has, especially since the last time we played up. “Everyone is very even, and on any day, anyone can win. We feel comfortable out there.” This comes despite Rupertswood struggling to field its best team. Three players were missing on Saturday, including strike bowler Aaron Forward. “We’ll get Aaron back this week,” Ryan said. “We had a few issues with people working, but hopefully we will get a full side on the park in the next couple of weeks.” Rupertswood’s job doesn’t get any easier, as they take on Gisborne this week. It’ll be the third top-four side from last season they’ll play in the first four weeks. They defeated Riddell in the second round last season. “There’s no easy games,” Ryan said. “We’ll see how we go. I’m looking forward to it.”
It’ll be a new challenge for the women of Sunbury Jets next season. The club announced last week it has been successful in its application to play in Big V state championship division next season. The Jets this year had one of the best season’s in Big V history, winning every game on the way to the division 1 title, with an average winning margin of more than 20 points per game. They easily defeated Geelong Supercats in the grand final series, 2-0. The Jets will replace Whittlesea Pacers in the state championship division, after the Pacers finished on the bottom of the ladder and were relegated. It’s the first time the Jets’ women’s side will play in the championship division. Jets’ coach Kennedy Kereama said moving into the top division was always part of the plan. He said preparations for next season were already under way and the club would have tryouts in coming weeks. He said the club is still talking to this year’s playing group about who would be part of the team. But, he said, at this stage no one has said they aren’t planning on being in the squad again. Tryouts will begin on November 6. The club would prefer players with women’s youth league, state championship, or higher, experience. “We’re in the same position as most clubs and going through the process,” Kereama said. “There’s been plenty of interest, so we will see who turns up. “Who wouldn’t want to be part of a great program and a great club? “The fact they’re interested is a reflection of a great club.” The men’s side remains in division 1, as does the youth league men’s side. The youth league women’s side will play again in division 2. For more details on the Jets’ women’s tryouts, email coachingdirector@ sunburybasketball.com.au Tara Murray

Two brothers in hand worth the wait as Hawks regroup
Daniel Toman has returned home to Woodend-Hesket. (Shawn Smits)
Woodend-Hesket’s focus on bringing local talent back into the fold has paid dividends with the club announcing its first big signing in the Riddell District Football League off season. Former junior Daniel Toman is due to return to the club full-time next season in a move that has excited both the club and its supporters. Toman has been playing VFL with Port Melbourne, while his local listed club has been Sunbury Lions. Toman was named in the 2013 VFL team of the year 2013 while playing for Bendigo Gold. Hawks’ coach Ross Sleight said Toman wanted to get back to playing football alongside his mates. Among those he’ll be rejoining is brother Ben, who also played for the VFL and returned to the Hawks this year. Ben was the runaway winner in the club’s best and fairest award.
“When [Daniel] wasn’t playing football, he would come down to the club and we’d have a chat,” Sleight said. “I kept saying I’ll certainly give you a buzz at the end of the season. “He could have gone to clubs left, right or centre, but he wanted to come home. “He’ll be a big help to me and assistant coach Paul Podbury with structures and game plans.” Sleight said he was looking forward to seeing the brothers play in the middle of the ground. “Landing Daniel has attracted attention,” he said.“Both are ripping blokes and respected, both boys want to have success at their home club. It sets a good tone, and we want to be more competitive next year.” Sleight said he hoped the signing of Toman would lead to other former Hawks returning to the nest. Getting players back to the club has been a big focus of the past two years.
“You’ve got to go out and bring in high quality players,” Sleight said. “We want success … not going out to get players from everywhere. We needed a turning point to say we’re ready to chase success and we think that this is it.” Sleight, who will coach the club for a third season, said players are keen to progress further. The Hawks finished 10th with three wins this year. Their under-18.5s played in a second straight grand final. “The first year was about getting players back to the club. This year ended up being a waste of year due to injuries. “[But] It gave young kids the chance to get a run they normally wouldn’t have.” Tara Murray

Andrew Siedel has been reappointed the Sunbury Jets youth league women’s coach for next season. Siedel has coached the side the past two seasons, taking the team to the division 2 finals on both occasions. The Jets were knocked out in the opening round of the finals this season.
RDNL
Macedon is holding netball trials ahead of the 2017 Riddell District Netball League season. The Cats, who made the A-grade and under-19 grand finals, will hold two trials for the senior teams, on November 12 and November 19. The open age trials will run between 9.30am and noon, while the under-19s will follow. All interested players need to fill out a registration form by November 7. Forms available through macedoncatsfnclub@gmail.com
BMX
Sunbury BMX club will host the Sunbury Stars Cup this weekend. The Cup, which normally attracts between 300 and 400 riders, will begin with practice on Saturday, before the races on Sunday. Races begin at 8am on Sunday.
Cricket
Rain prevented Gisborne from taking to the pitch in the Cricket Victoria Women’s Community Cricket Shield. All T20 matches scheduled for the round were washed out. Gisborne’s next match is scheduled for November 5 against Frankston.
Brad Oliver’s softball career is taking off. (Damjan Janevski)
Rookie career takes off By Tara Murray Sunbury’s Brad Oliver picked up a mitt and bat just 12 months ago – but you wouldn’t know it if you watched him play. Oliver has had a meteoric rise from a softball rookie to one of the state’s best young talents. He will represent Victoria at the under-17 national titles in Canberra early next year. Softball was not on the horizon for the 16-year-old until a mate asked him whether he wanted a game last year. “My mate Jai got me into softball,” Oliver said. “He asked me if I wanted to play. I didn’t think I’d go from starting to play softball to being part of a state team in 12 months.” Oliver didn’t even know he was on the radar of Victorian selectors. “I played for Keilor Park in a tournament [under-19 state championships] and people from the Victorian squad saw me,” he said.
“I didn’t even know they were watching – it was a bit overwhelming when I found out. I then had to go to two trials.” At the trials, Oliver was competing with 29 other players for 16 spots in the final team. “We had base running and time trials, batting practice and a lot of running,” he said. “I reckon I went well in the speed trials and my fielding was alright. My batting was good as well. I’m so happy to be selected.” State selection has meant Oliver has had to learn new team plays and a new position. “At my local team, I play catcher,” he said. “I’ve been training for second base for the state team. “There’s a big difference – catching you call where you want the pitch, while at second base you have to be more ready, with an eye on the pitcher and the batter.” Oliver is hoping state selection will be a stepping stone to his softball career.
Golf
“I would like to get a bit further,” he said. “It’s already a great achievement, [but] I would like to go further and get specialised training.” This season Oliver has made the move to new club Keilor Indians, which is part of the Keilor Park Softball Association. Oliver’s dad Paul, who is president of the Indians, said the club would be excellent for his son’s career. “Some of us were approached by the president at Keilor Park about starting a new club,” Paul said. “A lot of players [in the association’s other clubs] were looking to play elsewhere and it was the perfect opportunity.” The Indians have tee-ball and sides ranging from under-12s through to open women and men. Clarkefield’s Cody Rodwell has also been selected in the under-17 state team.
After a month of no play, golf finally resumed at the Romsey Golf Club. Recent heavy rain had made many of the greens unplayable. On Wednesday, golfers took to the fairways on a modified layout, with some fairways still too wet. On Saturday, the men took to the course, but it didn’t last long with regular rain and heavy wind making the conditions difficult. The round was called off after eight holes. The club is hoping for some dry weather so the monthly medals can go ahead this week.
