Rare view of an endangered world Cooper Ravensak has always had a healthy obsession with creepy crawlies. The 14 year-old Sunbury boy’s fascination with reptiles, amphibians and insects started during early childhood visits to the zoo and museum, mum Tracy says. Cooper (pictured) decided to buy a bearded dragon lizard with his birthday money, then two geckos later – inspired by Macedon zoologist Chris Humphries. “One of his brother’s classmates was selling stick insects, so Cooper bought two, set up a home for them and started a breeding program,” Mrs Ravensak says. “He had great success and on-sold to friends, a pet shop and the Coburg aquarium.” The teen has since expanded his breeding program to include a pair of Flinders Ranges scorpions. Cooper says his aim is to study zoology and environmental science to someday pursue a career in researching and breeding endangered species.

Forest shooters ‘a worry’ By Esther Lauaki Woodend residents are calling for a ceasefire at an old Macedon airstrip they say hunters and recreational shooters have turned into a rifle range in their backyards. The old airstrip, off Finger Post Road, was used to land planes carrying supplies when pine plantations were being planted near Woodend. It’s increasingly attracting target shooters and hunters because of its seemingly remote location. A nearby resident, who asked not to be named, said she fears for the safety of motorbike riders, horse riders and bushwalkers.

“I am sick to death of people using it as a rifle range and hearing high-powered guns being used where people actually live,” she said. “I’m just really concerned for other people using the area for recreation and, despite feeling like I live in a war zone, I’m just scared someone will get hurt. “It’s becoming a weekly occurrence, and we are having to call the police quite often when the gunshots get within 500 metres of the house. “All of us neighbors in the vicinity actually have our gun licences – it’s just that we feel uncomfortable that people are shooting … 200 metres from our properties.

“I’m all for hunting in the correct locations, bearing in mind the local residents,” she said. Dean Turner, a spokesman for the timber company, HVP Plantations, that manages the pine forests, said that no permission has ever been given for hunters or shooters to use firearms on its land. “We have a number of issues with people doing things without permission on our plantations,” Mr Turner said. “We certainly do not give permission for people to use firearms.” Residents took to Facebook recently to call for clear signage and a ban on shooting. Woodend police’s David Jakobi said shooting is “not especially prevalent, but it does happen”.

“To my knowledge, police have not recently received any calls about firearms being used at the Macedon airstrip, but I am aware of complaints … in the past,” Sergeant Jakobi said. “Being an old airstrip, it is a long straight unobstructed area that people sometimes use for target practice and for the sighting of scopes. As far as we are aware, they will be shooting at an inanimate object. “While I can appreciate that residents may be uncomfortable when they hear gunshots, it is not always the case that firearms laws are being broken.” He encouraged people to call police if they have concerns.

on the council, joined by first-timer Janet Pearce from the west, Bill West, Natasha Gayfer and Henry Bleeck from the east and Mandi Mees, Andrew Twaits and Helen Radnedge from the south. Female representation has increased from two to five. It is the first time Macedon Ranges council has had a majority of women councillors. The mayor will be elected at a special council meeting in Gisborne on Wednesday, November 16, with the new council’s first meeting scheduled for Wednesday, November 23.

New Hume and Macedon Ranges councillors have been finding their feet during their first week on the job after being sworn in last week. Veteran Jackson’s Creek ward councillor Ann Potter has been elected Hume deputy mayor, with Aitken ward’s Drew Jessop being made mayor. The pair were sworn in along with 11 other councillors at the first statutory meeting of the new Hume line-up at Broadmeadows. Cr Potter, a long-time Sunbury resident,

said her 16 years as a councillor would help her mentor new councillors by providing them with advice and support. “Very honoured to be elected deputy mayor of Hume tonight, I want to thank everyone for all their support,” she said on Facebook. Cr Jessop, the new mayor, said he felt “honoured” and was committed to the community. Meanwhile, seven new faces on Macedon Ranges council were among those sworn in last Monday. Sunbury twins Isobel and Eloise Henry are set to star in their first feature film, now being shot in Melbourne. The identical actresses are busy on set of the upcoming movie Just Between Us, under director Christopher Kay. The sisters are no strangers to the limelight … at just six years old, they had their screen debut before they turned one on hit Aussie drama Offspring. Offspring

They also landed roles on Underbelly and their singing and dancing skills earned them a semi-final spot on Australia’s got Talent earlier this year. While Isobel loves ballet, Eloise favours hip-hop, the two having their own quirks, mum Jodie says. Mrs Henry says the twins have loved performing since they were toddlers and take dance and drama lessons at Sunbury’s Flashdance school.

She says the girls are excited to be playing separate characters for the first time. “Before this, they’ve played the same character, but the girls will be playing sisters in the movie too.” Just Between Us is a comedy drama about the coming of age of two best friends, and will be in cinemas next year. Hotdog hunt a drone too far Some people will go to great lengths to get hold of a sausage in bread. But one frankfurter fan appears to have gone too far, using a drone to pick one up from his nearest hardware outlet. The Civil Aviation Safety Authority is investigating after a video was uploaded to YouTube showing a man piloting a drone to a Sunbury Bunnings carpark from his home. The video has since been deleted, however CASA spokesperson Peter Gibson said the incident potentially breached drone regulations that include not using a drone within 30 metres of people, and being in a built-up area. “You can clearly see people walking to and from cars, you can clearly see people around the sausage sizzle,” he said. Mr Gibson said the video showed a drone flying over a housing estate, crossing a four-lane road before hovering over the Bunnings barbecue. An alleged accomplice then places a snag into a receptacle connected to the drone by a string. The video has since been reposted on Facebook, showing a man receiving the sausage in a hot tub in the backyard of a house. Before that, the drone drops off a note in the Bunnings carpark saying: “Please buy snag and put in bag, here’s $10”. Mr Gibson said the rising popularity of drones meant authorities were busy making sure the flying machines stuck to safety laws. “This is a classic example of a place where you should never fly a drone.” The man faces fines of up to $9000 for breaching drone rules. Church plans comeback

It has been 40 years since Kyneton had a Presbyterian church, but it’s making a comeback. Parishioners Joy and Noel Johnston (pictured) want to reach out to those interested in reforming the congregation. The Johnstons are long-serving members of the Gisborne and Melbourne Presbyterian churches, but say they look forward to attending services closer to home. “We’ve been members of the church all our lives, and have been driving from Kyneton to Gisborne to attend church for some years,” Mr Johnston says. The first Presbyterian service was held in Kyneton in 1856 under a gum tree on Post Office Creek, Mr Johnston says. “In the mid-1970s, the Kyneton presbyterian,

Bureaucrats ‘drag’ out fire compo By Esther Lauaki Landowners continue to wait for compensation more than a year after the devastating Lancefield-Cobaw bushfire, which claimed properties and possessions. Fifty-six claims made through state government insurer Victorian Managed Insurance Authority have been settled, but 30 claims are still outstanding. New Macedon Ranges councillor and Lancefield CFA president Henry Bleeck said the remaining 30 claimants were “the forgotten

victims of the fire”. Cr Bleeck said some landowners had been left “high and dry”, and he called on the government to act urgently. “I am aware of several people who still have compensation outstanding and, anecdotally, I have been told of a number of others,” he said. “In the eyes of the government departments involved, they have quickly become the forgotten victims of this fire. “It’s shameful that a year on, people who lost property and possessions, and in some cases had their livelihoods and peace of mind shattered by this fire, are still being stuffed

around and left waiting to be reimbursed and compensated for their losses.” “It’s just not good enough that they’ve been left high and dry.” Cr Bleeck said the state government responded quickly and compassionately in the aftermath of the bushfire – but departmental bureaucrats were the ones dragging the chain. “I call on the government to put pressure on its insurance agency to release the purse strings and pay the people who are entitled to reimbursement.” Lancefield recovery case manager Dave

Watson, of the environment, land, water and planning department, said in some cases the delay in reimbursement was because cases were complex … some landholders were struggling with recovery or had other priorities. “If the landholders are prepared to progress the claims, we can progress those for them,” he said. Mr Watson said each landholder had an insurance assessor, and he urged those claiming to work closely with the department. “We hope that in the next six months or so, we can settle those claims,” he said.

It’s show ‘jump’ time The newest attraction at the coming Kyneton Agricultural Show will feature an increasingly popular take on the old-fashioned obstacle course. The world-wide trend of ‘parkour’ will be showcased at this weekend’s show … with a farm-inspired twist. Parkour originated in France and is the art of moving as swiftly as possible over obstacles, by leaping, flipping, vaulting and climbing whatever is in the path. The 40-metre course will include a ute and a tractor, tractor tyres, fence posts, a slide, and possibly a rope swing over a trough full of cow pats. Kyneton parkour practitioner Sam Turner says the sport is great for those wanting to have fun while getting fit. “It’s just testing yourself and forcing yourself to do amazing things and overcome all sorts of obstacles, both physical and mental,” Sam says.

“It’s just the whole freedom of movement – you can just forget everything. Nothing else really matters. And it’s a lot of fun!” Kyneton Agricultural Society secretary Josephine Rutledge says the course is just one of many funky, free activities to make the Kyneton show more appealing for older kids. “We have worked really hard to make sure show day is great value for families, and now we’re expanding what we can offer teenagers and older kids at the Friday night carnival, as well as the sideshows and all their favourite rides,” Ms Rutledge says. The show will turn up the volume on Friday night as prominent central Victorian acts hit the youth tent stage, with a DJ for the first time. Kyneton show opens November 18, from 5.30-10.30pm, and November 19, from 9am until 4pm. Details: www.kynetonshow.org.au Esther Lauaki

Public buildings across the Macedon Ranges may one day be powered by organic waste, as plans develop for a waste-to-energy power station in central Victoria. A business case is being established for a micro power station in Hepburn shire that would input to an energy network servicing the Macedon Ranges and four neighbouring local government areas. The state government-funded plan would mean power generated by the new energy network could power council buildings in Macedon Ranges, Ballarat, Hepburn, Central Goldfields, Mount Alexander and Pyrenees. Organic waste collected by the councils – such as food scraps that would normally go to landfill – would be diverted to generate power for public use. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the project would cut the costs of dumping organic waste in landfills, and would cut energy costs for the councils involved. “The idea of producing energy from waste is an exciting one – and I look forward to hearing more about it as planning progresses. “We are determined to grow clean energy jobs and are proud to be rebuilding much-needed confidence in the renewable energy industry following the neglect of Liberal governments at both state and federal levels,” Ms Thomas said.

Buyers with a cool seven million dollars at hand could buy themselves a piece of Macedon Ranges history. The historic Clunie and Flint Hill estates along Romsey Road have come up for sale – rare offerings in a much sought-after market. Five million dollars could deliver Clunie, 14 kilometres from Romsey on a mammoth 406 hectares, regarded as an iconic rural estate at Chintin, which is renowned as the home of a number of the district’s agricultural pioneers. Architect Allan Powell renovated the two-storey Victorian homestead (circa 1867), which includes six bedrooms, a sunroom, library, a cellar and panoramic views over Deep Creek. RT Edgar director Warwick Anderson said it’s very rare to find a property of this size with accommodation of such high quality. “You just don’t find such large holdings like this with houses like this on them,” Mr Anderson said. “[Clunie] has been in the same hands for more than 30 years. This is why this is such a special listing because the market here is very tough to get into as properties are very tightly held.” Fewer than 20 kilometres down the same road is the historic Flint Hill estate, which carries a $7 million price tag. Agent John Keating said the estate is a property of great botanical significance, with arguably one of Victoria’s most renowned private gardens. It includes European specimen trees, and sweeping lawns bordered by scores of rhododendrons. He said it’s not uncommon for buyers to spend top dollar for large holdings in the Macedon Ranges because of the region’s proximity to Melbourne and it’s natural beauty.

Tourism boost is well received By Esther Lauaki Close to $200,000 will go towards making the Daylesford and Macedon Ranges region even more of a beauty and wellness hotspot. Three planning projects will share in $195,000 of regional tourism infrastructure funding with the aim to increase visitor numbers, create jobs and drive economic growth across both regions. The state government has allocated $90,000 for a mineral springs feasibility master plan, $55,000 towards a feasibility study for hosting

opera events on Lake Daylesford and $50,000 to explore building a new health and wellness retreat. The Daylesford and Macedon Ranges Tourism Board welcomed the funding allocation on social media.

“This is a very positive step forward for our local tourism industry,” the post said. “Whilst these are focused mainly on the western side of the region we know there are others in the pipeline in the east which we believe will be announced before the end of the year.” Agriculture and Regional Development Minister Jaala Pulford said the initiatives were part of a broader suite of 26 planning projects which invest in growing the visitor economy across regional Victoria. “We’re accelerating the delivery of

investment ready, high impact tourism projects in the Daylesford and Macedon Ranges region to help bring more tourists to the area, create local jobs and boost our regional economy,” Ms Pulford said. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said improving critical visitor infrastructure would also help preserve the state’s iconic natural assets. “Our Macedon region has so much to offer and is rich with natural beauty,” Ms Thomas said. “We will make sure everyone has the opportunity to experience the best of everything.”

Meeting the challenge A new project will aim to improve gender equity and prevent sexism and violence against women in local male-dominated volunteer organisations. Macedon Ranges council has secured a $76,900 grant for its Rural Challenge, which will work to create more gender equitable Country Fire Authority brigades, football and netball clubs. The council will partner with Greater Bendigo council, Women’s Health Loddon Mallee, AFL Central Victoria and CFA North-West Region to deliver the project. Rural Challenge is funded by the Municipal Association of Victoria’s local government violence prevention grants program and was one of 10 projects funded across the state. Council chief executive Peter Johnston said the project was based on the Challenge Project which was successfully implemented in sporting clubs in several metropolitan areas.

“It’s an exciting opportunity to build on the work we’ve done over the last few years to address violence against women with the emergency management sector and the football/netballs clubs in the shire,” Mr Johnson said. “Our focus on CFA and football/ netball clubs reflects the reach and influence of these rural institutions which often perpetuate traditional gender roles, but could instead be leaders in community action for a safer and more equitable society.” The Rural Challenge project will start with a series of forums later this year and will be seeking participation from groups across the shire. MY PLACE Few things make Bill Morison happier than being on the cricket field or working with horses. The secretary of the Sunbury Over 60s Cricket Club spoke with Esther Lauaki about his passions. My connection to Sunbury commenced in 1969. I was living in Westmeadows and I commenced playing football with the Sunbury Football club. I met many local people many of whom are still very good friends today. How long have you lived in Sunbury? I moved to Sunbury in 1974 after building our first home and making many friends here. Sunbury was a quiet place then. It was very much a “country town” and only 35 minutes to the city. I like Sunbury because it still has a country feel to it and it’s close enough to the city and other major services if I need them. Tell me about how you came to be involved in the Sunbury Over 60s cricket club and Living Legends.

What other hats do you wear in the community? Being the secretary of the Over 60s Cricket Club and volunteering at Living Legends takes up much of my time. Apart from looking after grandchildren, I like cycling and try to get out for a few kilometres each week. Its keeps my knees in reasonable shape. What is something that others don’t know about you? I like most operas and light classical music. I don’t go to live opera preferring to watch it on simulcast.

12330886-MB46-16 10045657-06

I retired from competitive cricket in the 1990s after playing about 20 years with the Sunbury United Cricket Club where I am a life member. The Sunbury Over 60s Cricket Club formed in 2009 after I was coerced by a couple of local stalwarts into attending a meeting to form a veterans cricket club in Sunbury. We had a president, a secretary (me) and a treasurer and that was it. Not one piece of equipment, no ground to play on and no team. Suddenly, we were part of the Victorian Over Sixties Cricket Association (I had never heard of them). So, after ringing around the district and calling on a few old teammates and former opposition players we got a team together and played our first match at Rupertswood on October 18,

2009. We now have two teams, Sunbury and District and Macedon Ranges and our players come from throughout the region. After retiring from work in 2010, I joined the Living Legends as a volunteer in 2012. The Living Legends is a not-for-profit organisation that brings champion racehorses back to the people. A lifetime sanctuary for retired champion racehorses. I enjoy the work here as it can vary so much on a day-to-day basis for me. I don’t care what I do as long as I feel I am contributing in some way. I believe in the concept. The park and the homestead have so much history and it’s a great environment to work. I have always had a love of horses. I learnt to ride when I was very young and grew up with horses. I remember riding at Oaklands Hunt Club (now Sherwood), the pony club. I love to watch the thoroughbred racing scene but I don’t follow the race horses … it’s only with a shovel nowadays.

Chockful of charm and rich period detail, this beautiful Federation abode (‘Belmont’) – within an amble of village centre and train station – has been revamped to a high standard, with contemporary elements sympathetically executed. Five lovely bedrooms include two with ornate fireplaces, two sharing access to a chic bathroom, and one next door to a stylish, subway-tiled bathroom with pressed-metal ceiling and modern tub. There’s also a power room. A floorboarded lounge room has a fireplace, the family room has a wood heater, and the casual meals nook has banquette seating. The gorgeous, greyscale kitchen has all the mod cons, and the laundry is separate. A small rear deck looks out to manicured gardens and lawn, centred by a gazebo, on a block of about 950 square metres.

This Simonds Home-built residence in coveted Rangeview estate is a very polished affair. On a block of about 1640 square metres close to parklands, schools, train station and town centre, it’s one for a discerning family. The open-plan layout includes a large family-meals zone, with attractive floating floorboards, and a carpeted lounge/rumpus room – each with access to a great alfresco area with ceiling fan and a gas log fire. The sleek kitchen has stone benches, glass splashback and all the mod-cons. Four large bedrooms include the main with walk-in wardrobe and contemporary en suite. The main bathroom has a spa, while a powder room and walk-in linen closet are other inclusions. Ducted heating, evaporative cooling, gas-boosted solar HWS, security camera, water tank, landscaping and an integrated double garage are other features.

Backing onto Gisborne Golf Course and within a four-minute drive of the town centre, Clearview is a property of about six hectares with a four-bedroom residence. The pretty, undulating property represents highly sought-after acreage, with those neighbouring already taking advantage of opportunities on offer. The house needs a little work but is fine as is, or new owners may want to build a dream home. The four bedrooms each have wardrobes, while the main also has an en suite. Light-filled living areas include a large lounge-dining room, which links with the big family-meals zone around a kitchen with abundant white cabinetry, dishwasher and 900mm cooker. A covered back deck and a paved area provide entertainment space, and rural views are rather lovely.

On about 2000 square metres with well-established gardens and plenty of lawn space for kids’ play, this well-presented brick veneer represents a flying start for a young family and genuine value for money. Each of the three good-sized carpeted bedrooms has built-in wardrobes and shares a separate toilet and a bathroom with corner spa and large shower. A living room with wood heater, floating floorboards and vertical blinds connects with the meals area and kitchen. A small brekky bar, corner pantry and gas upright cooker fit out the kitchen, and the laundry is separate. A shed out the back makes a great workshop or man-cave space, and a vegie garden and chook run are lifestyle treats.

The embodiment of Macedon Ranges bluestone country, Hazeldene, on 6.07 hectares, includes a gorgeous c1860s farmhouse and a second, six-year-old residence built on the box ironbark bones of an original shearing shed. It’s girded by an 0.8-hectare vineyard, eight paddocks (one giving up to 160 hay bales), drystone walls (heritage), sheep yards and chook house. Many historic sheds, some huge, others smaller, dot the property, and there’s a massive machinery shed with concrete floor, plumbing and power. Riotous cottage gardens couple with several vegie patches, berry beds, and

an array of fruit and nut trees. There are numerous water tanks, along with unlimited potable bore water from the Deep Lead. The farmhouse is stamped with pioneering Victoriana – 4.3-metre ceilings, baltic floorboards, ceiling rosettes, sash windows and four fireplaces with original mantelpieces; later additions retain the quintessential farmhouse feel. Ranged along a traditional central hall with corbelled arch are three bedrooms, a big bathroom and charming lounge room. Two bedrooms have wardrobes and fireplaces, while the main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and a dressing room nook.

The fourth (rear) bedroom, with timber walls and ceiling, adjoins a powder room. Next to a step-down dining area – with a French leadlight window – the kitchen has timber cabinetry, a Smeg stainless-steel cooker, dishwasher, a Rayburn slow-combustion stove, and views of a pretty terracotta-tiled pergola area. An elevated terrace on bluestone, built around a venerable walnut tree, takes in views to Mt Alexander – and there’s a cellar with external entry. The second house has a wrap-around verandah incorporating an expansive gabled entertainment area with ceiling fans.

There’s entry from here to the living hub, where the kitchen has a walk-in pantry, Smeg dishwasher, underbench oven and cooktop. Original baltic boards appear on dado panels, floors and joinery. A bedroom is next to a bathroom with European laundry, and there’s a separate powder room. Opposite, the huge main bedroom has a tiled retreat space, with front and side verandah access. As a hobby farm, B&B or lifestyle venture – just five minutes from town – Hazeldene is genuinely unique and unmissable. Carole Levy

SPORT Brothers-in-arms celebrate twin tons for Romsey

Chris and Matthew Burkett made centuries in the same match. (Mick Burkett)

Romsey brothers Chris and Matthew Burkett had a day to remember in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup on Saturday. The duo posted centuries to guide their side to an important win against Rupertswood. It’s the first time in Romsey’s 140-year history that two brothers have scored centuries for the first XI in the same match. For playing captain-coach Chris, the match was a memorable one. “I can’t remember experiencing anything like that,” he said. “We’ve played a lot together now. For us to both score centuries in the same game is pretty memorable.” Despite their ‘tons’, the brothers spent little time at the crease together. Needing 242 for the win, Chris came out firing at the top of the order before being

bowled for 102 with the score at 147. “You’d think [Matthew and I] would have batted together for a lot of the innings, but it was only for an over and half to two overs,” Chris added. “I was trying to set the platform for the middle order. I was seeing the ball well and Taylor [Stevenson] was doing his job at the other end perfectly. “There were still a few runs to get when Matt came in and he made it look pretty easy, to be honest.” Matthew was on about 60 when his team brought up the winning runs. “Once we got those runs, I said, ‘Do what you want and have some fun’,” Chris said. “Once he got to 80 I thought he was going to go on and get the century.” Romsey declared at 7-307 with Matthew unbeaten on 103. The win is the second for Romsey this

United makes its stand

Tara Murray

Sunbury relies on too few

By Tara Murray Sunbury United has adjusted easily to life in Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B-grade competition. Just 12 months after winning the McIntyre Cup premiership, United were at the other end of the ladder last season, and were relegated. United managed to hold a large number of players from its playing group for this season, and it shows. They have won three of their four completed games, sitting on top of the ladder after five rounds. On Saturday, they knocked off Lancefield, which has been competitive in every game it has played. Last weekend, United made 9-247 on day one of the match, on the back of 89 from Damian Edwards and 42 not-out from number 10, Jackson Young. The Tigers didn’t make it easy on day two of the match, pushing steadily towards United’s score. While there was both time and balls in hand, the Tigers ran out of wickets and were bowled out for 218 with seven overs remaining. Kyle Fisher and Harrison Knott took three wickets each for United. James Hughes chipped in with two wickets. United sits on top of the ladder ahead of its clash with last season’s grand finalists, St Anthonys In other results, Macedon and East Sunbury couldn’t be split in their match. The Thunder needed one run off the final ball to seal the win, with Lachlan Wilkins and Jack Dillon at the crease. It wasn’t to be for the Thunder, with Wilkins run out, leaving scores tied at 228 apiece. Shannon McDorman who missed the previous round, top-scored for the Thunder with 77. Tim Dawe was the pick of the bowlers for Macedon taking 3-38. Bacchus Marsh played out a thriller against St Anthonys. After starting well with the bat at 1-77, the Bulls collapsed at 9-175, leaving them short 10 runs with a wicket in hand. Match-winner for the Bulls was 16-year-old Liam Taylor, who batted through 76 overs to make his 36 not-out. He and Tom Cotton got the Bulls over the line. The Bulls finished on 9-190 Wallan’s total proved too much for Ashfield. Having made a massive 328 on day one of the match, Wallan had the upper hand going into day two. Ashfield could only muster 9-200 in reply. Corey Woolley continued his good form making 48, while skipper Ryan Pretty made 43.

season. It’s in fifth spot, one of four sides equal on points. Chris said the team was looking to continue building the platform it’s been working on the past couple of years. “We’re a pretty young side with the oldest bloke 30, and I’m probably the next oldest at 25. “Most of the team has been together for three or four years, and we’re seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.” Chris said last season’s co-Sullivan medallist Ben Way would hopefully take to the field for the first time this season in coming weeks. Elsewhere at the weekend, Bacchus Marsh was too good for Sunbury, Gisborne failed in chasing down Woodend’s total, and Riddell fell just six runs short against Diggers Rest Bulla.

Sunbury has pulled off an upset win in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1. Having struggled for consistency since moving into division 1 this season, Sunbury had no easy task taking on section favourites and previously unbeaten Fitzroy Victoria. Sunbury still had its struggles on Saturday, but one winning rink was enough to get the overall result, 83 (12)-72 (6). Sunbury’s Dave Glennon said Mark Cowan’s rink had again been the saviour this season. “It was the same as the Melton game; we had only one winning rink,” Glennon said. “Only Mark’s rink won, and it was 29-8 up against Dylan Fisher, who returned that morning from playing with the Melbourne Roys in Australian Premier League. “Brad Janner lost 19-15, Carla Krizanic lost 23-18 and Elise Cowan went down 22-21. “The three losing rinks weren’t big losses and were easy to cover.” The win is Sunbury’s second for the season, placing it in eighth spot. Glennon said the win helped widen the gap between them and Preston Reservoir, which is yet to win a match. “We need to start winning more than one rink a week,” he said. “We’re yet to win more than one rink; we need to get at least two or three to start getting the wins.” Sunbury will have to make changes to the side in coming weeks, with Mark Cowan and Krizanic travelling to New Zealand for the world championships. The two will play this week before missing three weeks. Krizanic is one of three Victorians representing Australia, while Cowan is part of the coaching panel. The world titles cap off a busy few weeks for Krizanic, who was one of several Sunbury players in action at the Victorian Open. Krizanic, the reigning women’s champion, was knocked out in the quarter-finals by eventual winner Kelly McKerihen, and she was a runner-up in the triples. Elsewhere, Marc Bullows made the last 64 in the men’s competition, Sunbury United’s Brett McDorman celebrates the wicket of Lancefield captain-coach Luke Barker.

(Shawn Smits) 31 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 15, 2016

SPORT STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

Seniors, juniors unite to bring Sunbury up to the mark

New senior coach Lino Grech, right, with reserves coach Ian Burke. (Luke Hemer)

New Sunbury United coach Lino Grech is prepared for some challenges ahead as he looks to turn the outward tide at the club. It has been a tough three years for United – they firstly narrowly avoided relegation from state league 1, and then suffered two straight relegations. Next season, United will play in state league 3 north-west, a long way from the state league 1 status it once enjoyed. For Grech, it’s a return to a club he has long remembered fondly. “I used to play for Sunbury when they were in first division, and they’ve always been in my heart,” he said. “I had been in the NPL [National Premier League], coaching under-18s and under-20s. “Sunbury has given me a chance to coach

seniors,” he said. “It’s what I’ve wanted to do.” Grech knows it won’t be an easy road and he doesn’t expect instant miracles. He said building a winning culture was important going forward, and the club needs to be more professional on and off field, and mirror what NPL clubs do. “I’m not worried about going straight back up – it would be good though,” he said. “It’s about looking at the club for three, four and five years. “We want a good season back in division 3, and the main aim is to survive. Hopefully, we’ll get better year by year. “It’s about getting people wanting to play for Sunbury, instead of chasing them.” It will be a new-look United line-up next season, with Grech bringing some players

Coaching coup for Jets By Tara Murray Former National Basketball League great Lanard Copeland has been appointed coach of the Sunbury Jets’ men. The Jets announced last week Copeland would take on the role of coaching the division 1 side for next season. He replaces Andrew Summerville. Copeland, who played almost 500 NBL games and also played in the National Basketball Association, has notched up an extensive coaching record since retiring from playing. He’s currently an assistant coach to Andrew Gaze at the Sydney Kings. Copeland said the Jets’ role was perfect for him. “It’s a good opportunity and time-frame fit with me, and works for them as well,” he said. “It’s going to fit well for me and hopefully help me develop more skills and help take their program to the next level. “I think they’re excited for me to come and I’m excited to get involved.” Copeland said he was quickly learning about the young Jets, who finished eighth this year. He said his experience mentoring young players through school programs would be vital. “I’ll be trying to instill the skills in a young group and it’s about also having fun,” he said. He will join the Jets at the end of the NBL season. Copeland isn’t new to the Big V competition, having coached state championship side Hume City Broncos for two and a half seasons. He left the Broncos this year because of his commitments with the Sydney Kings. Copeland is confident of being able to manage his Jets and Kings workload, saying getting the right team behind him at the Jets would be important. Jets coaching director Kennedy Kereama said it wasn’t every day you could get someone of Copeland’s experience on board. “We are very pleased to have Lanard committed to our men’s program and believe that he will have a huge impact around the club,” he said. “We have many young Jets players who all aspire to play in the NBL and NBA, so it makes sense to bring in a guy who knows what it takes to play at that level. “Lanard is at an exciting stage of his coaching career, working in the NBL with a great coaching staff comprising of Andrew Gaze and Dean Vickerman at Sydney Kings. “He will be learning a great deal from his experience with them and I’m sure will be hungry to implement some of his learning to our men’s team at Sunbury.”

across with him. He said it was about setting up the playing group for the long term,, rather than looking for a band-aid solution. “My intentions are to bring in a lot of young kids with me, some 18, 19-year-olds … players who I’ve coached since they were 13-years-old and have done a good job,” he said. “They are on the edge of playing senior football in the NPL, but not quite ready … Another key for United is ensuring a pathway from juniors to seniors, Grech said. “I’ll have a look at the 15 and 16-year-olds and, if they’re good enough and I think they can play seniors, they’ll be promoted.” United’s senior and junior clubs have amalgamated. Sunbury Jets have re-signed American import Courtney Duever, who started in the division 1 Big V grand final series this year, averaging more than 20 points, four steals and nearly 12 rebounds per game. Jets’ coach Kennedy Kereama said Duever was the final piece of the puzzle to a side that went undefeated this year. “Her versatility and ability to score, pass, rebound and defend gave us an edge, not to mention her super competitive nature. I believe she will be a very tough cover for any opposition team, and I look forward to working with her again.” Duever is the third re-signing announced by the Jets, which will play in state championship division next season. Others are Monique Stevens and Chelsea Burns.

Three of the four netball sides made finals, with the A-grade team, led by Amy Carroll, finishing sixth.
