Fire fears ‘ignored’ By Esther Lauaki Residents in fire-prone areas such as Gisborne South, Lancefield and Riddells Creek fear they will be left without mobile phone coverage when they need it most. The towns were among more than 30 locations that were ignored in the latest round of federal government funding for its Mobile Black Spots program. Gisborne south resident Cathy Evans has complained to the ombudsman regarding the lack of mobile coverage in the area. “In February, 2014, there was a bushfire in our area and due to the lack of mobile coverage the FireReady app did not alert us to the impeding danger,” Dr Evans said. “The lack of mobile coverage also impedes my, and my husband’s, ability to fulfil our work commitments. “I am a veterinarian, often on call, and the lack of mobile coverage impedes my ability to attend to my calls.” Elderly Gisborne resident Alan Goldsmith says the lack of mobile coverage causes him “significant stress” because he has a number of health issues that could be exacerbated by the coming fire season. More than 30 black spot locations in the region were submitted for consideration to receive towers under the Mobile Black Spots program. Only one tower for the federal electorate of McEwen has been included in the latest round. The tower that was promised for Broadford and Reedy Creek in round one, more than a year ago, has not been completed. Federal MP Rob Mitchell criticised the selection process for the program, saying it had become “politicised”. “McEwen is riddled with mobile black spots, creating risks, particularly on high fire danger days where authorities, families and local communities rely most on mobile phones,” Mr Mitchell said. “Our communities meet all criteria for the funding – we’re a rural community, near busy transport routes and are constantly affected by natural disasters. “It is no secret McEwen has faced five major fires the past six summers, including Black Saturday, the Mickleham-Kilmore fire and last summer’s Lancefield fire. “When it comes to delivering for fire-prone northern Victoria, the Turnbull government is simply failing to deliver on its promise.” 12334600-EPJ50-16 10035024-15
Farm is big on local love Sunbury’s Animal Land Children’s Farm has been a delight for thousands of children for decades. But when Laurie and Joanne Pincini bought the farm from Laurie’s parents 23 years ago, they never thought it would become as popular as it is today, with more than 18,000 visitors a year from all around the world. Mrs Pincini puts their success down to collaboration with local businesses, from which they source everything from hay and animal feed to recycled building materials. “We use local businesses every chance available,” Mrs Pincini said. “They’re like us and they need our support because they’re the backbone of our local economy. “Christmas is our busiest time of the year, not unlike many other small business, and it’s important that we all work together.” The business has expanded to include bus company Rockleigh Tours. Animal Land Children’s Farm and Rockleigh Tours were a case study for a new report, Economy of Shopping Small: Custom Counts, which looks at small Australian businesses and their contribution to the economy. Sunbury plan divides residents By Esther Lauaki Some residents say they have more questions than answers after the Sunbury South and Lancefield Road precinct structure plan meetings last week. More than 100 people fronted the Victorian Planning Authority (VPA) consultation sessions last Monday and Thursday to learn about newly released 50-year plans for growth. Sunbury Residents Association president Bernie O’Farrell posted on Facebook that members felt that the meetings were “useless”. “Many people had questions, but there were very few answers,” Mr O’Farrell posted.
“When asked about infrastructure to support the precinct structure plans, the answer was always: ‘That is proposed’, or ‘That is planned’ – it was always someone else’s responsibility.” But Sunbury Community Progress Association spokeswoman Alison Cunningham said she was satisfied with the responses she received to her questions. “We had the opportunity to speak one-on-one with the facilitators, and it was a forum where people could give their feedback,” Ms Cunningham said. “The VPA answered questions on infrastructure, congestion issues and land development.” The working names for four proposed new
town centres around Sunbury are Yellow Gum, Emu Creek, Redstone Hill and Harpers Creek. Ms Cunningham said she would support the development of four town centres as long as infrastructure is upgraded – as outlined in the plans. The Victorian Planning Authority said Redstone Hill will be a major town centre, with the rest defined as local centres. Mr O’Farrell said the association is concerned about how the plans affect existing residents. “We believe there are far more important items to address in Sunbury before these [plans] are even considered,” he said. “Things like the Bulla Bypass, a third and fourth rail crossing,
car parking for shoppers and commuters, even simple things like the rezoning of land at the Macedon Street end of Evans and O’Shanassy streets.” Ms Cuningham, a resident of 23 years, said Sunbury has never been a small town. “It was always going to grow … I think if you have other smaller town centres where people can go and shop, with their own train station and plenty of parking, it will ease congestion in other parts of the town. “I would encourage people to make a submission.” Submissions close February 6, 2017. The choir will sing at the North American premiere of Sir Karl Jenkins’ Cantata Memoria on January 15. Jenkins, a Welsh composer, was commissioned to write a piece for the 50th anniversary since 116 children and 28 adults were killed in a mudslide in the Welsh coal mining village of Aberfan. Gisborne Singers’ president Margaret Murphy said the choir has been rehearsing for the past few months, above and beyond its commitments to its latest show, Messiah. “This is the biggest gig any choir could

Burn-off targets washed out people living on the urban fringes. Generally speaking, grass fires move faster than bushfires and grassland dries out faster than bushland. The state’s dense forests are forecast to dry out by mid-January and February. But, Mr Lapsley warned, grasslands could be tinder-dry as early as Christmas. “We’ll get the hot weather,” Mr Lapsley said. “It’s coming.”

According to Emergency Management Victoria, areas of the state facing an above normal potential for bush and grass fires this summer include Melbourne’s northern, western and south-eastern suburban fringes. In December, the areas at greatest risk of bushfires will be between Melbourne and Echuca. Come January and February, the risk will be greater for coastal communities along the Great Ocean Road – from Apollo Bay to Torquay. Most controlled burning in Victoria is undertaken in the cooler months after summer. And most of the annual target area is focused on bushland areas, which take longer for the sun and wind to dry it out.

Fire authorities can’t meet planned burn-off targets, despite the state facing a higher-than-normal chance of bush and grassfires this summer, Victoria’s emergency management commissioner Craig Lapsley has conceded. Less than one per cent of the 10 per cent pre-summer burning target has been met. Mr Lapsley said only about 4000 hectares of the 25,000 hectares scheduled to be burnt before summer started had been burnt. “We’re behind by about 20,000 hectares running into summer,” he said. Pre-summer burn targets set for October and November account for 10 per cent of the annual burn target of 250,000 hectares. The current backlog is due to Victoria’s wet spring, which has prevented controlled burns in areas including the damp forests around the Dandenongs, Otways and Macedon Ranges. “It’s only the last two weeks that they have been able to start the burns program and that’s been in the Bendigo and Mildura areas where it has started to dry out,” Mr Lapsley said. “There’s no way they can catch up in December on what would normally have been done in October and November,” he said. As a result, land managers have taken to mulching, mowing and cutting vegetation in some parts of the state to create firebreaks. Victoria’s wet spring has not only meant fire authorities have been unable to undertake prescribed burning – rain has resulted in prolific growth that only increases fuel loads. Mr Lapsley identified grass fires as one of the season’s biggest threats, particularly for

Dog act back to drawing board By Esther Lauaki Dog breeders may be asked to help draft new domestic animals legislation after proposed changes to Victoria’s legislation were abandoned last week due to a public backlash. The state government’s economy and infrastructure committee has recommended scrapping controversial proposals that were originally designed to end unregulated and cruel puppy farms and industrial-scale dog breeding. Hundreds of breeders staged demonstrations at both Sunbury and Kyneton dog shows earlier this year to protest the proposed reforms, which would have forced at-home breeders to comply with regulations from which they were previously exempt. Breeders feared that the financial burden created by the reforms could spell the end of speciality breeds and popular dog shows. The report makes 18 recommendations on the bill, including setting up a stakeholder group, with representatives from the dog industry and councils, to consult on the drafting of better laws. Kyneton and District Kennel Club spokeswoman Jean Baldwin said she was thrilled that the government had gone back to the drawing board. “I think it was the right decision, Ms Baldwin said. “Dog breeders were left scratching their heads about the proposed reforms and how [the government] came up with these changes. Dogs have been part of Australia’s history since
its beginnings, and we need breeders. Dogs are bred for all different purposes, not just for show, but for farming or assistance animals and for all sorts of reasons. Ms Baldwin said the dog breeding community and Dogs Victoria would be happy to participate in shaping the new bill. Dogs Victoria president Wayne Fleming said the report, tabled in Parliament last Tuesday, found that the bill in its current form was unlikely to achieve its intended goal of ending unregulated puppy farms and industrial scale commercial breeding.

“The report found that the government had not adequately consulted with stakeholders – including Dogs Victoria Mr Fleming said. “It has been a pivotal week for Dogs Victoria members and our campaign around the Domestic Animals Amendment. “Any new regulatory framework must be effectively targeted, enforceable, and evidence-based when looking to establish the best standards in animal welfare and ensure compliance by breeders. “We agree with the committee’s findings that this bill did not achieve that, but we nonetheless remain committed to working constructively with the government, Mr Fleming said. More than 150 children signed up to the town’s Goldfields library to tackle the new literacy program, which aims to combat poor reading among adults by starting kids reading books, and enjoy being read to, from an early age. Goldfields Library chief executive Chris Kelly says she is thrilled by the response to the program so far. “We were thrilled to have such keen interest

Ranges citizens in a safe place By Esther Lauaki
A big help for cancer families

Macedon Ranges residents are among the least fearful in the state, the latest VicHealth figures shows. The shire scored 80.1 out of 100 in the VicHealth indicators survey, a snapshot of health and wellbeing, compared with the state average of 77.3. The survey is conducted every four years. The 2015 results show that 70 per cent of Macedon Ranges residents agreed that they felt safe walking alone in their local area after dark, compared with the Victorian figure being 55.1 per cent. Almost 80 per cent of residents felt they lived in a close-knit neighbourhoods, while the Victorian figure was 61 per cent. More than 85 per cent of residents trusted their neighbours, while only 71 per cent felt the same statewide. According to the data, Macedon Ranges residents ate more than two serves of vegetables a day on average – on par with the rest of the state. VicHealth chief executive Jerril Rechter said the data would help council plan for the future. “This data will be invaluable to Macedon Ranges in developing its Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan, while also providing an opportunity for residents to assess their individual health and wellbeing with that of their local community,,” Ms Rechter said. “Small changes over time can make a big difference. Setting simple goals, like eating one extra piece of fruit or vegetable per day or going for an additional walk each week, can make major differences to our health and wellbeing in the long term.” Go to www.healthsnapshot.com.au to see the results of the survey.
Sunbury and Macedon Ranges shoppers can support families affected by cancer through Redkite’s Christmas appeal. Until December 27, shoppers can buy $2 Redkite donation cards at Coles at Sunbury, Gisborne and Woodend to support the annual campaign. Six-year-old Hayden Clements is fighting a brain tumour. His mum, Simone, said support from Redkite was invaluable in helping families such as her own. “Without them we couldn’t have got through this year,” Ms Clements said. “We received food and petrol vouchers and that assisted us so much. “We were travelling into the hospital four to five days a week … the petrol bill, parking, medications and spending on food at the hospital just accumulated very quickly, and that didn’t even include babysitters or feeding extra family members who came to help.” Redkite general manager Monique Keighery predicted a surge in demand in the holiday season. “For many families, the Christmas period can be a really challenging time,” she said. “Some families will get the devastating news that their child has cancer and hundreds of children will be undergoing treatment.” HAYDEN CLEMENTS

Lead-footed drivers are being urged to slow down as summer road works ramp up across the Macedon Ranges. Council’s assets and operations director Dale Thornton said there have been too many incidents of speeding through roadworks, and warned drivers to take note of reduced speed limits and to respect the safety of road workers. “Our crews are out every day maintaining road surfaces and roadsides, clearing blocked roads after trees falling down, and doing general clearing works after storms,” Mr Thornton said. “To complete their work quickly and safely, they may need to reduce speed limits, close lanes, set up temporary traffic lights and ask you to stop or slow down. “They work to make our roads safer for you, so please give them the respect they deserve by following the traffic rules that have been put in place for the safety of everyone. “The person holding the ‘stop’ or ‘go slow’ sign could be your relative, friend or neighbour. “They have families that love and depend on them just like you.” Mr Thornton said offenders would be reported to the police. “Our staff have been advised to note down the registration numbers of any drivers that do not obey the traffic rules, so that we can pass them onto the police,” Mr Thornton said.

Plan progress for the Rock
Make time to remember The past five years have been harrowing for Helen Street. Christmas is especially tough for the Sunbury mum of five, who mourns the loss of both parents, the father of her eldest son and a close family friend – all in quick succession. Ms Street (pictured) says she still feels the pain “as if it just happened yesterday”. “I lost my mum, Gladys, on Boxing Day 2011,” she says. “I remember I was rushing around on Christmas Eve trying to get my children ready, and I went to visit my parents at the [retirement village] about four times that day. “I watched the carol singers that night with my mum and that was the last time I saw her awake.” Her father, Keith, died after a short illness in 2014, her former partner Duane Cartilage was
killed in an accident last February and a close family friend died just days later. Ms Street attended a Tobin Brothers remembrance service earlier this month, as she has done every year lately, to honour them. “[My grief] comes to a climax around this time of year because everything is so busy, and I miss them so much,” she says. “You’re in an environment where people are in the same situation … mindful of how you are feeling.” Ms Street says she will light a candle this Christmas to remember her loved ones. Many local churches and organisations are hold Christmas services to help bring the community together. A free Christmas Day lunch is at Kyneton town hall on December 25. Esther Lauaki
Hanging Rock’s new advisory committee will have its first meeting this month. Seven members of the Hanging Rock strategic advisory committee were named at Macedon Ranges council’s most recent meeting. Three members from the Dja Dja Wurrung, Taungurung and Wurundjeri indigenous communities are still to be confirmed. Chairman Nathan Alexander is joined by Peter Bishop, Jon Dight, Val Pollard, Helen Relph, Penelope Roberts and John Williamson on the committee. Macedon Ranges mayor Jennifer Anderson said selection was based on skills and experience in a range of areas. “We hope that, with the assistance of this committee, a shared vision and management plan for Hanging Rock and the surrounding precinct will be achievable through the partnerships of the community, council, and the Victorian government,” Cr Anderson said. Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the appointment of the committee was another step towards delivering a plan for the precinct’s future. The community will continue to be involved and consulted throughout the development of a masterplan for the Hanging Rock precinct. Details: www.mrsc.vic.gov.au/ HangingRock Esther Lauaki

GLUTEUS MEDIUS TENDINOPATHY
What is Gluteus Medius Tendinopathy? It is strain/damage of the gluteus medius tendon. The Gluteus medius muscle is located in the upper side region of the buttock, with its tendon coming around to attach to the large bony bump (greater trochanter) on the side of the hip. What are the symptoms? Pain in the side of the hip that may refer into the buttock, lower back and outside of the thigh. Standing up from sitting, getting in and out of the car, walking up/down stairs and prolonged repetitive movements such as walking or cycling can aggravate symptoms. Gluteal Medius Tendinopathy GMT affects women more than men. GMT is usually caused by an increase in load to the tendon beyond its capacity, such as suddenly increasing running distance, speed, or taking up trail or hill running/walking. It may also be caused by trauma such as falling on the side of the hip. GMT can usually be diagnosed without the need of imaging via specific tests performed by your physiotherapist. GMT is often misdiagnosed as trochanteric bursitis. A bursa is a fluid filled sac lying between a tendon and bony protuberance to prevent the tendon from rubbing. Bursitis is inflammation of the bursa. Trocahnteric bursitis often accompanies GMT; however bursitis often is a symptom of the tendinopathy and not the primary diagnosis. Injection therapies such as cortisone into the bursa may work to reduce symptoms short term; however unless the underlying biomechnical issue is treated the condition will return or remain. How is GMT treated? Physiotherapy and exercise rehabilitation are the primary treatments for GMT. Treatment includes assessing lower limb biomechanics throughout functional tasks and specific loading movements. A thorough background is gathered to ascertain aggravating factors. Once underlying causes are determined, treatment includes releasing tight structures that increase load on the tendon and bursa, modifying actvities and movements, and most importantly, progressively loading the tendon to promote tendon growth and repair resulting in a tendon able to deal with the loads placed upon it. This loading process invovles a graded exercise program gradually increasing tendon load in a safe, minimally provocative manner. This loading process takes time with most rehablitation programs taking 12 or more weeks. If you think this condition may be affecting you give us a call at Sunbury Physiotherapy to organise assessment and management.

I live in Sunbury. I have been coming to Sunbury as a competitor in the Sunbury agricultural show since the ’70s. I’m also president of the Sunbury Community Progress Association.

Tell me about your role as president of the Sunbury Community Progress Association.
What made you want to get into community service? I was a member of the junior committee at a pony club, so my volunteering started early. To raise funds for equipment we ran a combined training day each year. My involvement in this taught me early on that the competitions I attended required a lot of work by dedicated volunteers well in advance of the event. Do you wear any other hats in the community?

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
CONSIDER THE SAUCE We all know Kenny Weir’s penchant for burgers … well … Running ahead of time, I decide to take the scenic route to Altona’s Harrington Square, but as I pass Bezirk cafe on Millers Road, I feel a twinge of guilt. I’d exchanged emails a while back with one of Bezirk’s proprietors with a view to doing a CTS review – but we simply haven’t got around to it yet. Now here I am, heading to another Altona cafe to do the biz on the eve of its big opening! Oh well … happily, after I enter Birdcage Cafe Altona, I discover the couple behind it, Adrian and Cath Davey, are the very same folks who run Bezirk – problem solved … or rather, no problem at all! Adrian tells me their initial focus in opening a sister joint for Bezirk ran more along the lines of a hole-in-the-wall operation. But when they found and secured 7 Harrington Square, they decided there was no other way for it than to run with gusto, with the greater space at hand. And a lovely space it is, too. It’s kinda minimalist, but in a warming way. Naturally, Birdcage Cafe is doing a fine line in brekkies, including breakfast pumpkin gnocchi and apple crumble pancakes. But with more room, and more room to cook, Birdcage Cafe is going further than Bezirk in terms of lunch offerings, running to – for instance – a Thai beef salad and a grilled salmon. I’m told the menu testing has all been done, and I’m on hand for a sort-of softish opening
BIRDCAGE CAFE ALTONA Address: 7 Harrington Square, Altona Phone: 0414 224 821 for friends and family. So my lunch options are limited to the burgers … no matter. Now, take it on board that my lunch has been prepared in the knowledge it is to be eaten by a food writer and that I did not pay for it. That said … IMO (in my opinion) this fried chicken burger ($17) is a sensation! There’s nothing particularly sophisticated about it, but … A massive slab of crisp, juicy and tasty fried chook; cheese; rough-cut, excellent coleslaw; a single rasher of very good bacon. Excellent chips on the side. Really top stuff, it all is. And so substantial that I have no room left for a chunk of Nutella baklava. Adrian tells me they’re creating some of their sweet treats in-house, but are sourcing others from local specialists, such as Fresh Prince of Baklava. Also keeping the righteous local vibe going are meat from Paddock to Table in Laverton and hams and the like from Sycamore Deli in Altona. My cafe latte is marvellous. FRIED CHICKEN BURGER
Plan and prepare THE REASONS ARE BLACK AND WHITE
If you live in a suburb near grasslands, you’re at risk of fire. If you live directly next to parks or paddocks and a grassfire starts, walk at least two streets back. If you live two or more streets away, stay where you are, fire is unlikely to spread into built up areas. Stay alert and monitor conditions. Don’t drive, visibility may be poor, accidents are likely, and you could block emergency services.

Prickly pear is a green cactus plant, with prickles that scream “stay away or I will hurt you”, that was once such a pest in two Aussie states, it overtook more than four million hectares by 1920. It was a killer with a very cool name that saved Australia from becoming one giant prickly pear – the cactoblastis moth. Digging up and burning prickly pear didn’t work. It laughed at bullock-drawn rollers’ efforts to crush it. It had the day’s boffins feeling desperate. It took the mighty cactoblastis. I go into this history because it’s unlikely we’ll ever let prickly pear be our friend again, so any chef turning to this critter is likely to have slim pickin’s when it comes to crops to source. However, prickly pear continues to pop its head over suburban fences in Melbourne. It seems to favour properties along railway lines.

As a kid, I ate fresh prickly pear and remember liking the taste. It was floralwatermelon-y, with the jewel-red colour of the fruit looking delish. This is why chefs who like to walk on the wild side are also starting to experiment with the prickly pest. The fruit makes a mighty fine sorbet, using the juice heated with castor sugar, lime juice and water that is then whacked into an ice-cream maker and given a few blitz moments. Since the fruit is ripe right at the end of the warmer months, it makes a fitting dessert to salute the past summer’s bounty. So when you foodies start seeing it on menus, you’ll now know it’s a relatively rare ingredient to be savoured. And give three cheers to cactoblastis while you’re at it. Carole Levy

This fab place has all the Fasham design signatures: mould-breaking architecture and light – lots of light; in this case from double-glazed, garden-framing windows. And those stunning gardens, on about 10 hectares on Mt Macedon’s eastern slope, are a magical accompaniment to the near-30-square house. Four big bedrooms, main bathroom, separate toilet and laundry/mudroom line the long, gallery-like entrance hall. At the house’s opposite end, the main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite with dual basins and a tub. In between, there’s a carpeted lounge room with wood heater; this adjoins a fitted study and connects with a superb living hub and kitchen with butler’s pantry. Outdoor perks are many: drystone walls, orchard, amazing vegie garden, chicken coop, rainwater tanks, bore, sheds and triple garage.
First-home buyers, investors and downsizers will be eyeing this one off. Quahlee Park is just down the road, and the train station is five minutes by car, as are the village centre and primary school. Freshly painted in neutral tones and with new window dressings and grey carpet, the well-presented house has three bedrooms – two with built-in wardrobes, the main with walk-in plus en suite. The toilet is separate to the all-white main bathroom. A lounge room inside the front door has a wood heater and a sliding door to the dining zone, which is next to the kitchen. Both the latter have floating floorboards. The galley kitchen, in timeless black and white, has new stainless-steel appliances. A huge carport behind picket gates doubles as an entertainment area. There are two garden sheds and surrounding gardens offer well-established leafiness.

Exceptional, extravagant, sophisticated, refined, wow: pick your superlative because they all apply – indoors and out. The big, beautiful house, on 4614 square metres with gorgeous gardens, is lavished with polished travertine lining vast floor spaces and all wet-area walls; designer blinds and imported drapes; deep cornices on three-metre ceilings; extra-height 2pac doors; and luxe touches at every turn. Beautifully decorated bedrooms have amazing walk-in fitted robes. The large main has a big en suite with walk-in dual shower, dual basins and enclosed toilet. The huge main bathroom has a spa, walk-in shower and dual basins; and there’s a powder room.

Auction: December 17 at 11am There’s a large, generously fitted study that could bring the bedroom count to four, but there are already two others – one as a pretty free-standing studio with basin, and another in the summerhouse (more about that later). An elegant, grey-carpeted lounge room has a marble-framed Jetmaster fireplace, while the enormous living hub has a Hamptons-like vibe. In here, there’s bespoke (white) cabinetry and automated blinds behind classy drapes. The lovely kitchen has white, panelled 2pac cabinetry with nickel pulls, a massive black granite-topped island bench (under shmick pendants) with nickel tapware at the sink, a walk-in pantry, Miele
dishwasher and Ilve cooker. The laundry is a storage-galore cracker. Outdoor treats deserve their own story. A walled courtyard is centred by a salt pool (heated via a 15kW solar system) rimmed by synthetic turf. Next to this is a vaulted plaster-ceilinged alfresco area with an open fireplace. The nearby large, tiled summerhouse, with bifolds opening to the pool area, doubles as a guest retreat. It has a bedroom, fully equipped Miele kitchen, sitting area and a travertine bathroom/Euro laundry. A porte cochere, integrated garage (internal access) and a double carport provide spaces for vehicles. Down a

branch off the circular front driveway is a 225-square-metre shed with mezzanine floor, workshop, toilet, storage room and expansive external concrete – and three-phase power, which can be found throughout the property. A fully lined and painted, concrete-floored cellar/man-cave/playroom under the house is about 17 metres long. Tanks hold 228,000 litres, vegies are contained in seven large boxes, a cubbyhouse adjoins a playground and chooks have their palace. There’s so much more – do not miss this one. Carole Levy

SPORT Gisborne gets the goods as Keane steps in as coach Gisborne has secured one of the state’s top netball coaches for its A-grade team for next season. The club announced last month that Australian and Victorian player Guy Keane would coach the side next season in the Bendigo Netball League. Keane has an extensive coaching background, including involvement with state teams and Victorian Netball League teams. He is currently an apprentice coach with the Australian Netball League side Victorian Fury. Coaching Gisborne will be his first foray into the challenge of a football-netball club, but it’s one he’s excited to take on. “It’s going to be a little challenging on both ends,” he said before the first training session.
“I’m looking forward to hitting the court with the girls and experiencing the community culture of the club. “I’ll bring some high performance elements to the club. I think it’ll be a good mix.” Keane comes to the club through a connection with star defender Madeline Stewart. “I coached Maddi in the state under-21 side earlier this year,” he said. “She was putting out feelers if I knew anyone or whether I was interested in coaching the side [Gisborne]. “It went from there.” He said building on the past couple of seasons is the main aim. The Bulldogs made finals this year, losing to eventual grand finalists Golden Square in the semi-finals.
“The club and the girls are excited to take the next step,” he said. “We just don’t want to play finals. There’s a good vibe around the club and, hopefully, we can recruit a few players to add to a talented playing group.” Keane said they were looking at bringing in a couple of players to strengthen the side. “There’s a couple of key positions up for grabs,” he said. “The club is happy for me to chat with a couple of girls from Melbourne. “We want to keep the country feel to the club though. Any player has to commit to the club and the community feel of the club.” He said some of the younger players would continue to be given opportunities. The Bulldogs’ under-17 team won this year’s grand final.
Keane said his commitments with the Victorian Fury might have had a slight impact during the pre-season and opening rounds of the season, but the club had been understanding. “The ANL is over before the season really gets going. “The club has been really great about it.” The Bulldogs will kick off their season on Good Friday against local rival Kyneton. Meanwhile, Maddi Stewart will again be part of Melbourne University’s championship division side in the Victorian Netball League. Another Bulldogs’ player from this season, Maddison Gay, has been named in the division 1 team. Tara Murray

Riddell is through to the last eight of the state Regional Big Bash Competition after victory against Nathalia. The Bombers batted first making 8-129, with Haydn Ross top scoring with 51. Nathalia managed to maintain the necessary run rate, but lost frequent wickets to be all out for 101. Mackenzie Casson and Ross took three wickets each. The Bombers, who are in the competition after winning the Central Willows T20 competition last season, will play their next match in January.
Football
Krista Woodroffe has been appointed AFL Goldfields’ first female football manager. With the expansion of women, youth and junior girls football, AFL Goldfields has appointed Woodroffe to oversee the promotion, development and operation of female football across the AFL Goldfields region. AFL Goldfields is expecting to have between 45 to 50 female sides next season across the junior, youth girls and women’s competitions.

Acting captain Daniel Fisk top-scored with 56 in Riddell’s win.

Bombers bounce back By Tara Murray Riddell recorded a much-needed win against Bacchus Marsh in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup. Sitting on the bottom of the ladder after seven rounds, the Bombers needed a win to keep in touch with the top four. On Saturday, the Bombers resumed at 2-36 chasing the Bulls’ 112. The Bombers added 22 to its day one score before Haydn Ross fell for 30. It was a case of two batsmen getting set for the Bombers, before they would lose a wicket. Acting skipper Daniel Fisk and Matthew Darby were at the crease when the Bombers secured first innings points. Darby fell not long afterwards with Fisk pushing the score towards 200. Once Fisk fell for 56, the tail collapsed with the Bombers all out for 196. Fisk top-scored, with Elliott Artingstoll chipping in with 41.
Cameron McKinley and Rhys Watson took three wickets each. The Bulls were 0-93 at the end of play, with Mili Sepala 59 not out. Meanwhile, Diggers Rest Bulla pulled off a miraculous victory against Woodend. Woodend looked headed for victory at 6-190 needing just eight runs with plenty of overs in hand, when a mini collapse changed the game. Lindon Dowsett got the wicket of Thomas Boyer before James Morley fell four runs later to Darren Quarrell. Kevin Barker then got the big wicket of Josh Eastley for 53, leaving Woodend needing four runs with one wicket in hand. Quarrell finished the match with his seventh wicket, giving the Burras a three run win. Quarrell finished with the figures of 7-55. The win gives the third-placed Burras a gap on Woodend and the other chasing sides. Darcy Nolan was on fire early for Gisborne as it defeated Romsey. Nolan took six of the first seven wickets for
the Dragons as they bowled Romsey out for 122, well short of the 257 needed for victory. The Dragons decided to have a second bat, with playing coach Simon Harman top-scoring with 82. Sunbury maintained top spot on the ladder with a big win against Rupertswood. Entering day two of the match in control having made 320 on day one, Sunbury’s bowlers backed up the job the batsmen had done. Rupertswood could only manage 145, with Michael Treweek top-scoring with 44. His brother Stephen was the best of the bowlers for Sunbury taking 4-30. Rupertswood avoided an outright loss, making 4-186 in its second innings. Jordan Curran top-scored with 63. Mitchell Johnston took three wickets for Sunbury. The loss and Riddell’s win leaves Rupertswood on the bottom of the ladder. This week the side’s will play in a one-day match before the break for Christmas.
Riddell and Sunbury will play-off in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s premier division T20 grand final, after beating Woodend and Gisborne respectively. Bombers skipper Mick Allen made 82 not out to help his side to a total of 4-157. Woodend never got close, being bowled out for 80. In the other match, Sunbury chased down Gisborne’s total of 4-133. Sunbury, led by 51 from Jason McGann, made 4-137 with 11 balls to spare. In the district division, Sunbury United will play Wallan in the grand final after beating Kyneton and Macedon respectively. Both grand finals will be played Tuesday, December 13.
Golf
Anthony Freeman has taken out Romsey Golf Club’s John Laing Shield. Facing dual shield winner Scott Williams, scores were level half way through the round before Williams went one up after the 10th hole. Freeman took the lead on the 17th to win 2-1. Big win keeps Sunbury in the hunt for a finals berth Sunbury’s keeping the pressure on the top four sides with a massive win against Preston-Reservoir in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1. Facing the bottom side, Sunbury was keen to try and claim all 18 points available on Saturday, and it did exactly that. Only the rink skipped by Shane Trewarne faced tough competition, as Sunbury won 110 (18)-45 (0). Trewarne’s rink won 20-16, Elise Cowan won 24-11, Brad Janner won 27-9, while the biggest win went to Brad Willoughby’s rink which won 39-9. Sunbury’s David Glennon said despite going into the match as red hot favourites, they didn’t take the match for granted. He said taking all 18 points was needed to keep the pressure on the top sides. “They are the bottom side,” he said. “I spoke to their chairman of selectors and he said they didn’t expect to win a game this year they’re struggling that much.” The win leaves Sunbury sitting in sixth spot,
just eight points behind fourth-placed Deer Park at the halfway mark of the season. Sunbury faces third-placed Glenroy in the final round before the Christmas break. A win would bring Sunbury to within single figures of Glenroy. Sunbury will face a tough week at selection with regular skips Mark Cowan and Carla Krizanic both returning to the side. Brad Willoughby isn’t available, but Glennon said Willoughby would be available every second week for the rest of the season which is a bonus. “It’s really good to be able to call on someone of the calibre of Brad,” Glennon said. Krizanic returns to Sunbury as a multiple world champion. Having been part of Australia’s ladies fours victorious team, she was then part of the winning ladies triples team on Saturday. In the Central Highlands Bowls Division, Kyneton ended Lancefield’s unbeaten start to the division 1 season. The teams split the rinks at two a piece, with
Kyneton winning by four shots, 97 (14)-93 (4). The win gives fourth-placed Kyneton some space on fifth-placed Bacchus Marsh. Gisborne had a 127 (18)-77 (0) win against Woodend. It was similar result between Kyneton Golf and Trentham, with Golf winning 124 (18)-53 (0). Romsey won the other match 107 (16)-84 (2) against Bacchus Marsh. In division 2, Gisborne Yellow, Diggers Rest, Kyneton Golf and Kyneton had wins, while Kyneton, Macedon, Woodend, Trentham and Romsey had wins in division 3. Tara Murray

United takes top spot By Tara Murray Sunbury United produced one of the best performances coach Steve Grey has seen to defeat Wallan in Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B-grade competition. In the top of the table match against Wallan, the match was evenly placed at tea on day two. Chasing 206, Wallan was 5-139 at tea with their best batsman Brenton Hanson at the crease and looking good. United was without its best bowler, James Hughes, What happened next showed Grey that the side is heading on the right track. “It’s the best win I’ve seen in a long time,” he said. “Our bowling attack was very inexperienced and we had several younger players between 18 and 24 bowling. “There’s things we’ve been working on like bowling in the right areas. “To come out and take 5-20 after tea to get the win was excellent for the team.” Wallan was all out for 159. Kyle Fisher and Josh Wallace took four wickets each in the win. Grey said the most pleasing thing this season for the side was a focus on having a more even contribution. “In the past it’s been James getting the wickets and Ryan [Billinghurst] getting the runs. The next tier of players is stepping up. Everyone is playing their part. “Lance Watts has stepped up as has Damien Edwards, Adam Billinghurst and Brett McDorman. We’ve not had a batsman score 200 runs this season, as it’s someone different each week.” The win means United and Wallan switch positions, with United going to the top of the ladder, just under six points clear. United plays Lancefield in a one-day clash on Saturday, the last game of the year before a break over Christmas. Naturally, Grey is happy to be on the top of the ladder, but more importantly how they have got the wins. “It’s always good to win early games,” he said. “We’re in a good position heading into Christmas.” In other matches, it was disappointment for Ashfield on two fronts against East Sunbury. Chasing the Thunder’s 301, Ashfield fell well short, finishing 8-212 off its overs. Lancefield easily accounted for St Anthonys. Chasing 106, the Tigers made 276 with skipper Luke Barker making 102. Kyle Fisher took four wickets on Saturday. (Damian Visentini) 36 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ DECEMBER 13, 2016
Young bloods give Thunder added grunt East Sunbury will continue to push the youth policy in the Essendon District Football League next season. Coming off their best season in four years in the competition, the Thunder wants to continue development in division 2. The Thunder finished sixth on the ladder, only knocked out of mathematical finals contention in the final round. Thunder’s president Keith Osborne said several players who had tasted senior football this season would likely get more opportunities next year. Both the under-19s and reserves played finals for the first time last season. “We’re hoping the likes of Thomas Crea, Matthew Jackson, Jaxon and Corey Mobilio and Lachlan Brne will get more opportunities,” he said. “We were disappointed with the way things finished in [the under-19s]. “But we did roll the dice a little [by playing them in seniors] … we could have gone safe and kept playing them in the 19s. We think they will be pushing for senior selection week in and week out – it’ll make more competition for spots.” Osborne said this year’s playing group was mostly intact, with the departure of Kamen Ogilvie the only big out. Ogilvie finished runner-up in the EDFL division 2 best and fairest award this year. “His presence off field as well will be missed – he added a professionalism and did the little things,” Osborne said. The club has now signed ruckman Jorden Braddy, who can also play forward and comes across from Rupertswood to provide some much needed height in the middle of the ground. “It’s really positive to get a ruckman of his calibre … John McMahon has recommitted and most of the spine has as well. We’ve got stability on and off the field.” Steve Grey will coach the side for a third season. Travis Bishop has been appointed reserves coach and Jason Spiteri will coach the under-19s. Meanwhile the club is looking at fielding under-15 and under-18 girls football teams. Details: anthony.blighty@ gmail.com or 0419 511 721 Tara Murray

Sunbury Little Aths reaches for the stars This weekend’s Little Athletics Relay State Championships brings lots of excitement and a touch of the unknown to Sunbury Little Athletics Centre. The centre will have several first-time state championship participants and, unlike the last few years, won’t have one of the most dominant relay teams. The centre has won eight medals, all gold, in the past three years, which were all won by the same group of boys progressing through the age groups. While they would have loved to have the boys back again, centre president David Thies said it will be exciting to see what this year’s relay teams can do. “We’ve had some of the first timers [competing at regions], who have performed surprisingly well,” he said. “There have been a couple of fast groups in the under-9s that stood out. “It was their first time doing relays and, being at the start of the season, they didn’t get much chance to do training. “They were happy just to get a medal,” Mr Thies said.
Sunbury Little Athletics relay teams are off to the state titles.
“They will go ballistic if they win anything at the state championships.” Among the competitors this weekend are three under-9 teams. It’s the first time this group of runners have been old enough to qualify for the championships.

The team of Alyssa Evans, Eden Wilkins, Bridie Berne, and Gemma Ellis will compete in both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 metre events. Tait Rennie, Christian Cowell, Indiana Stott, and Katherine Watson will compete in the mixed under-9 4 x 200 metre relay. The other teams to qualify are the

Lachlan Brne made history when he was named in the Central Highlands side for the under-18 state cricket championships early next year. By being named in the side, Brne became the first East Sunbury player to be selected to play for the Highlanders in a state-level competition. Brne said it was an honour to be the first Thunder player to get to this level. Thunder has fielded cricket teams since 2009. “It’s a great opportunity I’ve been given,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to being the first player for East Sunbury. It means a lot and something I’ll hold with me for a really long time.” This was the second year the 17-year-old has tried out for the team. He said the experience of being part of the program as a bottom age player has helped him this time round. “I made it through to the final stage before being cut,” he said of last year. “I didn’t even think I’d make the squad of 27. For me to even get that far was an achievement. “This year I’ve worked really hard on bowling and batting as well. I got to see how the top age players went about it last time, so I’ve tried to mimic that a little bit.” The medium pace bowler said he is looking forward to spending a week playing cricket against players his own age in the championships. The Highlanders were runners-up at this year’s event. “It’s pretty cool they got that far last year,” he said. “There’s premier cricketers in the side. There’s a lot of them, so I’m going to try and learn from players of their calibre. They’ve got a lot more experience than I do. “It’s another step to play against players with more experience.” At the local level, Brne has stepped up to play in the Thunder’s Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B-grade side. He had previously played one first XI match for the club. “I’ve always been able to bat and bowl against people my own age – this is the next step playing against people older than me,” he said. “It’s helped me to pitch in the right areas and helped my development a lot. “I’ve been a bit expensive for my liking, but it’s all about learning each week.” The selection news didn’t end there for the Thunder, with Brandon Nicholls selected as the first Thunder player to represent the Gisborne and District Cricket Association at senior level. He was selected to play in the KenMac Shield match against Maryborough. But the match was cancelled due to Maryborough not being able to field a team.
under-10 boys 4 x 200 metres team of Lucas Arbanas, Jameson Haxby, Alex Fish and Riley Coughlan, the under-11 girls 4 x 100 metres team of Brianna Mastin, Maddison Vowles, Isabella Jordan and Zoe Ryan, the under-11 girls 4 x 200 metres team of Brianna Mastin, Maddison Vowles Zoe Ryan and Piper Sanford, the girls under-12/13 medley team of Maddison Vowles, Georgia Stepanoski, Abbey McDonald, and Jordan Van Pelt, and the mixed under-10 4 x 100 metres team of Brianna Mastin, Piper Sanford, Lucas Arbanas, and Jameson Haxby. Thies said the teams are training really hard ahead of the championships. “The parents have taken a real interest and many of the kids are practicing by themselves,” he said. “It’s going to be interesting to see how they go.” The centre itself has recorded its best participant numbers in at least eight years. More than 200 athletes have signed up for this season. Tara Murray
Kangaroos put out call for women’s side Sunbury Kangaroos are the latest club to signal its intention to field a women’s football side next season. With the AFL women’s competition underway, and expansion into more localised women’s and girl’s football leagues, female football is booming. Kangaroos’ president Allan Walters said there had been some interest in setting up a side and the club is keen to get it up and going. The club will hold an information session this week. “We’re keen to find out what interest there is a for a side,” Mr Walters said. “We’ve already had eight or nine players interested in playing. “We’re desperate to get it up and going. Players can be of any skill level, and it doesn’t matter if they haven’t played before.” Walters said the club is still to decide whether it will enter the team in the AFL Goldfields or Essendon District Football League women’s competitions. The junior club is considering a youth girls’ side next season, with the two clubs looking to provide a pathway from junior to senior women’s football. The women’s side is one of two new sides the Kangaroos are looking at next season. They are also keen to field a third senior men’s side, to ensure all senior players get a game each week. This side will either play in the Essendon District Football League’s thirds competition or a new open age AFL Goldfields competition. AFL Goldfields is also considering a thirds competition next season, with several clubs interested in doing the same. The competition would be a 16-a-side semi-serious competition. The EDFL has had a thirds competition for the last two seasons. Like the Kangaroos, Diggers Rest has indicated it will be fielding a thirds side next season. The Kangaroos women’s information session is on Wednesday, December 14. The Kangaroos are also still looking for a netball co-ordinator and A-grade netball coach.
