Australians set to party

(Shawn Smits)

Australia Day is just two weeks away and Harrison, 16 months, is already getting into the spirit of national celebrations. Events are planned across the Macedon Ranges on January 26, with the council expecting a packed house at Kyneton town hall for the annual Australia Day awards and citizenship ceremony, starting at 10.30am. In Gisborne, residents can sign up for Macedon Ranges Running Club’s fun run at Sankey Reserve. Registrations for the free five-kilometre walk and run open at 7.30am, and participants are encouraged to wear Australian colours. People looking for a more laid-back Australia day can head to Country Racing Victoria’s race day at Hanging Rock. Gates open at 11am. Race day offers free children’s activities, live music, food stalls, a punters’ club and, of course, the running of the Hanging Rock Cup.

Cap crunch for councils By Laura Michell Macedon Ranges council has flagged reductions in planned works and services allocations in its 2017-18 budget after the state government imposed a rates cap of two per cent for next financial year. The cap, which was set by Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins last month, prevents the council from raising its rates by more than two per cent. This year’s cap was 2.5 per cent.

Ms Hutchins said the permitted rate rise for 2017-18 was in line with the Consumer Price Index and would make things fairer for ratepayers. But council chief executive Peter Johnston said the reduced cap would result in a reduction in planned rate income, meaning the council would be able to spend less money on works and services. “We know that there will have to be a reduction in some works and services in order to comply with the rate cap,” he said.

“Council will carefully consider the financial impacts of rate-capping on our community, environment and infrastructure and, as usual, we will seek community input on the draft budget during May.” Hume council chief executive Domenic Isola said his council would consider the impact of the cap on its budget throughout the year. The Municipal Association of Victoria has warned the government that the cap will impact council services across the state. Interim president Coral Ross said councils would

struggle to meet their community service and asset renewal obligations. “Councils did well to protect communities from service cuts last year,” Cr Ross said. “However, this will inevitably become harder, as the cost of delivering services and meeting local infrastructure renewal needs do not reflect the Consumer Price Index, which the government has used to set its rate cap. “The two per cent cap comes on top of decades of cost shifting from state governments and a 2.5 per cent cap last year.” C AUTOMATI A TR $1,000 EX Multimedia Sat Nav 355L boot space LED Daytime Running Lights

Heat on to fix weathered roads By Laura Michell Roads across the Macedon Ranges are in a “poor and dangerous condition”, and must be put on a state government funding priority list, a Liberal MP has said. Northern Victoria MP Wendy Lovell is calling on the government and VicRoads to make road upgrades a priority across the Ranges after receiving complaints from many residents over recent weeks. Ms Lovell says sections of the Calder

Freeway are most dangerous, while she also has concerns about motorists’ safety on the Bacchus Marsh-Gisborne Road, beyond Bullengarook, and sections of the Daylesford-Malmsbury Road near Malmsbury. She said these roads are dangerous to users and are causing significant damage to vehicles, at significant cost to owners. VicRoads regional director Mal Kersting said the busier roads in the Macedon Ranges are showing signs of wear as a result of a significant increase in traffic over the past decade.

He said high winter and spring rainfalls had compounded the problem this year. “[This has] resulted in a significant increase in potholes and deteriorating road surfaces … including along sections of the Calder Freeway, the Daylesford-Malmsbury Road and the Bacchus Marsh Gisborne Road,” he said. “The recent drier conditions have seen most of these being repaired, however there are areas where repairs are ongoing. The majority will be completed in the coming weeks, while some major patching works along the Bacchus

Marsh-Gisborne Roads are programmed over the next two-three months.” Mr Kersting said VicRoads often receives requests for road repairs and general improvement and carries out regular maintenance and road hazard inspections in the region, including on the Calder Freeway and other major roads, every two-three weeks. He said during January, VicRoads will begin a resealing program targeting sections of the Calder Freeway, the Melbourne-Lancefield Road and the Lancefield-Woodend Road.

A hole lot of fun

Zoe and Lucas (pictured) hit the course at Goonawarra Golf Club last week to brush up on their skills ahead of next week’s junior activity days. The Sunbury club’s resident golf instructor, Carol Leaney, will be on hand on January 17 and 18 to run skills clinics and competitions. For beginners, the fun starts at 10am on January 17 with a one-hour clinic. More experienced young golfers can take part in afternoon clinics on both days from noon. There will be nine-hole team competitions each afternoon open to golfers of varied abilities. Ms Leaney says the activity days are aimed at encouraging children to give golf a go in a fun, safe and relaxed atmosphere. The activity days cost $32 for one day or $58 for both. Bookings are essential and can be made at the golf shop. Details: 0407 331 399

Holiday time is great for people, but not always their pets. Macedon Ranges council impounded 10 dogs and a sheep following New Year’s Eve fireworks and festivities, while in neighbouring Hume, rangers took in 75 dogs and six cats between Christmas Eve and January 2. Macedon Rangers community safety manager Anne-Louise Linder said six dogs had been reunited with their owners quite quickly. “This was due to those owners ensuring their pet was microchipped, contact details were current and their pet was registered with council,” she said. “It is important that pet owners regularly update their contact details with council and the microchip registry, and maintain their pet’s registration.” Ms Linder also recommended placing an engraved ID tag with the pet’s name and a contact number on its collar. She said the four dogs whose owners could not be located had been transferred to North Melbourne’s Lost Dogs Home. The sheep is still in the care of the council. Hume council’s corporate services director Daryl Whitfort said by January 5, 58 pets had been reclaimed. He said the rest had been placed in a shelter for eight days and, if they’re not reunited with the owners in that time, are assessed for rehousing, sale or adoption. Mr Whitfort said dogs are particularly sensitive to new year’s eve fireworks, and a pet that normally appears quite placid can become frightened and jump a fence. “Owners should always do everything they can to ensure both cats and dogs are safe and secure,” he said.

Times are a’changing Kyneton Theatre Company (KTC) will take a step back in time to the 19th century with its new production. The group is pushing ahead with its plans for a March performance at the Bluestone Theatre, despite missing out on a grant from Regional Arts Victoria last year. To make up for the funding shortfall, the group will present a modified version of a musical called Wintersong Wintersong, set in the Macedon Ranges in 1891. The audience will sit in on an active working presentation alongside theatre professionals, and will be able to offer suggestions. Wintersong tells a story of how people manage their lives and the challenges arising

during a period of changing technology. It has been written specifically for community theatre. KTC member and librettist Kathleen McLennan said Wintersong arose from a conservation about life’s options in the 1890s as compared to nowadays. “Of course, a grant would have enabled us to present a more finished performance,” she said. “But we are confident that Wintersong will deserve a place in Australian musical theatre.” To become involved with Wintersong and the Kyneton Theatre Company, contact KTC president Frances Kelly on 5422 7002. Four decades on, it’s farewell By Laura Michell For more than 40 years, Bernie O’Farrell has been at the helm of Sunbury Residents’ Association, doing his best to ensure the community voice is heard. By last month Mr O’Farrell decided it was time for a change of pace, opting to stand down from the association’s committee. Peter Free was elected as the new president. Mr O’Farrell became involved in the group in 1974 after coming across a meeting notice in the local newspaper.

‘‘

I believe that all the issues raised … will - Bernie O’Farrell continue

(Shawn Smits)

’’

The association had been formed a year earlier, but over the year, member numbers had dwindled … at the meeting, there was talk of the group folding. Mr O’Farrell remembers speaking up for the residents’ association to keep going. After the meeting, he was appointed president – a role he held for “virtually” all the time he was on the committee. “I felt that it was important to have a group that was the voice of the people,” he said. “We still need a group that will advocate for the community.” Since Mr O’Farrell joined the association, Sunbury’s population has grown from about 7000 people to close to 40,000, presenting the group and Hume council with significant challenges. Mr O’Farrell said many of Sunbury’s issues were related to its growth. “Traffic congestion and parking in the town

BERNIE O’FARRELL

have been big issues,” he said. “There has been a continuing need over the last 15 years for another railway crossing. “The town is getting bigger. I believe that all of the issues raised over the past 40 years will continue to be issues.

“The solutions to them haven’t appeared yet.” Mr O’Farrell believes the push for Sunbury to leave Hume is still the biggest issue the association has tackled. He believes that there is still strong support for Sunbury to quit Hume and that this will continue to be a big issue

for residents over coming years. Mr O’Farrell said he would remain part of the residents’ association despite stepping down from the committee. And he will always be a passionate advocate for Sunbury and its townsfolk.

Wellbeing the focus of grants

Paul Levey and survivors create a new “loud fence” outside Salesian College.

(Shawn Smits)

Survivors, loud and clear By Laura Michell Vandals have targeted a plaque and “loud fence” at Salesian College, which were created to acknowledge survivors of church abuse. The loud fence, decorated with ribbons, was created in June 2015 by the school and Sunbury Men’s Survivors Support Group founder Paul Levey to help abuse victims heal. Many Salesian College principals, boarding masters and brothers at the college between 1960 and 1990 have faced court on scores of sexual abuse charges. A plaque on the fence, near the Rupertswood

Cricket Club oval and lake, condemned sexual abuse and called on people to add their own ribbons. But over the Christmas period, vandals graffitied the plaque, and the school removed the loud fence. Principal Mark Brockhus said it was disappointing that the plaque and ribbons had to be taken down. “It is sad … this space was special to survivors, the victims and their families. It was also an important education space for current Salesian College Sunbury students,” he said. “A decision is now being made if this can be securely re-located within the college grounds.”

With the school closed until February, survivors gathered at its front gates last Wednesday to create a new loud fence. Mr Levey said the group wants the new fence to be bigger and better. He said survivors were hurt that the initial fence had been removed. “We know there was some graffiti down there, but why remove the ribbons?” he said. “The loud fence is somewhere that survivors would go. It was promised it would be a permanent place in the community.” Anyone with information about the graffiti attack is asked to contact Sunbury police on 9744 8111.

Sunbury sports clubs, arts groups and seniors’ associations are among 140 community ventures set to benefit from the latest round of Hume council’s community grants. The council has allocated more than $264,000 to projects across the municipality, with more than 25 Sunbury groups in the line-up. Mayor Drew Jessop said the community grants program was a great example of how the council works with not-for-profit groups to boost wellbeing. “The community grants program opens doors for positive change and improvement to the wellbeing of Hume residents,” he said. “The recipients … represent a fantastic partnership between council and community.” The council has allocated $1400 to crisis support group CareWorks SunRanges to help provide food hampers to people in emergency and crisis situations. Sunbury Garden Club received $1400 to help maintain its railway garden. Sunbury Storm Softball Club, Superoos Basketball Club, Sunbury School of Calisthenics and Sunbury Little Athletics were among sports groups to each receive $1000 to go towards equipment and venue hire. All groups will receive their grants at a presentation evening to be held at Craigieburn on Wednesday, February 8. Laura Michell

Sports boost hailed around town By Laura Michell Riddells Creek sports clubs are rejoicing after the state government committed $100,000 to install more courts at the local sports reserve. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas visited Riddells Creek Reserve just before Christmas to announce the funds, which will go towards the second stage of Macedon Ranges council’s $561,000 Riddells Creek Tennis Club project. The council has already contributed $215,000 to the project, with reserve user groups providing $246,000.

‘‘

Since we got the first three courts … membership - Andrew Nicoll has doubled

’’

As part of the works, two floodlit tennis courts and a netball-basketball court will be added. These works follow the construction of three tennis courts in 2013, and will help cater for a growing population in the Riddells Creek area.

Riddells Creek Tennis Club’s Andrew Nicoll said the extra two tennis courts will mean the club can put together more teams, as well as enabling more home matches at Riddells Creek. Currently, one of the club’s junior teams plays its home matches at Kyneton. Mr Nicoll believes the club will be able to add another junior team and at least one other ladies team after the upgrade. “Since we got the first three courts in 2013, the club’s membership has doubled from around 55 to 120 … and we have managed to sustain that,” Mr Nicoll said.

“The Riddells Creek community has a growing demand for sports facilities. We have been working with the council for some time to get funding.” The government has also committed $100,000 to improve cricket training facilities at Riddells Creek and Gisborne, part of the government’s growth corridor cricket participation project. Macedon Ranges council said the funds will go towards its $206,280 project to develop synthetic pitches with retractable nets in both towns. The pitches will also allow other users to access the area for netball or football warm-ups.

GP standards passed on Gisborne GPs Stephen Newton, Rod Guy and Kulbir Gill have spent the past 21 years training Australia’s future family practitioners. Last week, the trio’s service to the health sector was recognised when they were three of 58 medics across Australia honoured for their work as GP supervisors by General Practice Supervisors Australia (GPSA). GP supervisors are highly-trained specialist GPs who train young doctors in an apprentice-based model. Their role is to guide and mentor young doctors before they are registered to practice. GPSA chairman Dr Steve Holmes said the Gisborne Medical Centre Gibrone doctors are helping build the competence and confidence of local doctors in the area. “Doctors Guy, Newton and Gill are being recognised for their commitment to providing the very best care to patients while supervising, inspiring and supporting the next generation

of GPs and the future GP workforce,” he said. The three doctors started in Gisborne more than 30 years ago, and became GP supervisors because they believe it adds another level of interest to their role as community doctors. Royal Australian College of General Practitioners president Dr Bastian Seidel said GP supervisors are essential for providing one-on-one teaching, supervision, support and feedback. “They are at the coal-face of GP training. It is the apprenticeship model that supports the best health outcomes for patients,” he said. Laura Michell

Enough! Road warrior calls a halt By Goya Dmytryshchak It was a fatal crash that sent shockwaves through the community. On October 24, 2016 a car driven by 15-year-old Newport boy Luke Lee crashed in West Sunshine, killing him and injuring his four passengers aged 13-17. One of them, 15-year-old Billie Lea Harris, of Doreen, wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and was left facing 12 months of treatment. A crowdfunding page has been set up for her in a bid to raise $50,000. It’s teenagers like these that the Fit2Drive program is trying to reach and influence. Altona’s Leigh Hardinge is president of the Fit2Drive Foundation which holds peer-led workshops for year 11 students and other programs for people aged 16-25. The program started with 18 schools in 2000 and now has more than 150 participating. Mr Hardinge, an SES founding member who has seen the aftermathofhundredsofcrashes, said there was no judgement or scare tactics, just facts to get young people thinking about their choices. “A lot of people get wrapped up in the road toll,” he said. “The toll is a tragic situation, but people very very rarely talk about very serious injuries where people are either maimed or have acquired brain injury for the rest of their lives. “It’s terrible; you’re going to have to have carers for the rest of your life. “It must be an awful shock, particularly if they still have reasonable thoughts and mind function, but mechanically they’re locked in a wheelchair. “And these are the things we try to share. We don’t believe in traumatising youngsters as to what can be the end result.

Leigh Hardinge is president of a program to keep young people safe on the road. (Luke Hemer)

“We try to share with them scenarios that are based on fact.” Mr Hardinge said one of the biggest contributors to road trauma among young people was distraction. “Whether it be texting, whether it be mobile phone conversations, whether it be conversations within the car, with all the other

traffic and everything else that’s around the place, it’s an invitation for a tragic outcome,” he said. “We used to be all [focused] towards the young drivers, but it’s now road users. “We look at the road users as a whole … pedestrians, passengers or drivers. They all come under a regime of … you’ve got to be prepared to do the right thing,

be safe and think of your family and friends.” Fit2Drive has introduced a LegitiMATE Moves program for people aged 15-18 who have offended. “We’re not there to tell them about the rights and wrongs of what they’ve been doing: It’s just to give them some options to work with,” Mr Hardinge said.

FOOD REVIEW

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir waxes lyrical about fabulous Footscray fare … Count us among those who see the Indian food flowering in West Footscray as something quite fabulous – absolutely worth celebrating. We have our favourite food there, and favourite places, depending on our whim of the moment. One thing we do look for is a point of difference … and Tiwari Tea House has that in spades. While other Barkly Street eateries feature chaat – savoury Indian snack-type dishes – this place does nothing but … And the food is all vegetarian. Four of us get into the menu and come away happy … and perhaps even refreshed after eating snacky things so devoid of the heavy spicing and meatiness we often enjoy hereabouts. As the name makes clear, this place is also much about tea – so we go with that flow. Bennie and I have the masala chai ($9.95 for two), while our pals Julian and Christine have black ginger tea. It seems rather pricey for a couple of cups of chai. No matter – we enjoy all our food, and love some of it a lot. Big hits are our vada pavs ($6.95 each). Looking like tall, chubby burgers, these are bread buns stuffed with wonderful potato patties. The potato is heavily infused with turmeric, but otherwise mildly seasoned. That’s a lot of carbs, right? Yet the overall effect is much lighter than we may have been

TIWARI TEA HOUSE Address: 1/578 Barkly Street, West Footscray Phone: 8529 5960 expecting – and the flavours really hit the spot. We have two sets of crispy cutlets ($8.95 for two), served with dipping sauces of the tamarind and green chilli variety. The spinach-cheese cutlets are on the dull side … no such problem with the mixed vegetable varieties – they’re both stuffed with a mix that is colourful and tasty. Dahi puri ($7.95 for six) are close relatives of the more familiar pani puri. So closely related, I suspect, that I struggle to tell the difference, apart from the inclusion of yogurt – though there’s no doubt these sev-topped (crushed crispy noodles) flavour bombs are delicious! Aloo tiki chat ($8.95) is another big hit with all of us – we should’ve ordered double! Yes, more potato. Here, the spud rissoles appear to be even less seasoned, yet – nice surprise – have a semblance of chargrill flavour. They’re topped with a sticky jam/chutney, tomato, raw onion and more sev. These are very, very good. Kenny Weir is the founder of Consider the Sauce, the definitive guide to eating in Melbourne’s western suburbs – www.considerthesauce.net

SPORT Coach brings new game plan to women’s competition

Ben Muir is the new coach of Kyneton’s women’s football team. (Supplied)

Ben Muir will lead Kyneton’s women’s football team this season after taking over from Lisa Borg before Christmas. Borg set up the team and coached for the first two seasons, but decided not to seek reappointment. While new to the senior role, Muir is no stranger to the Tigers, having coached and played with the club. “I was assistant to Lisa the last couple of years,” he said. “She did an amazing job setting up the club. “I came down to training with my partner, who was looking to start, and Lisa asked if I could give her a hand. When the main job came up, I interviewed for it and got the job. “It’s a great bunch of girls and women’s footy is the next big thing in football.” Muir said there are currently about 15

players this season, with the hunt on for new and experienced players to join the squad. The club is holding a come-and-try night for the women’s and youth girls’ sides on January 18. They are also looking at fielding an under-12 team. “We’ve approached a few new girls and want to work together to build the team up,” Borg said. “Last season we would sometimes have a bench in games, and then in other games we would only have 15 players.” The Tigers face a new challenge this season playing in a different competition, with AFL Victoria handing control of women’s football leagues to local governing bodies. Muir said getting the side’s first win is something to aim for this season. The Tigers were winless in their first two seasons. “Last season we played a lot of the Ballarat

Cup race a tight affair By Tara Murray The gap between the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup top four and the chasing teams continues to close. After nine rounds, little more than 22 points separates the entire field, with every team still in finals contention. With bottom side Rupertswood a little over nine points behind fourth-placed Woodend, every match is vital to ladder positions. Riddell is leading the pack chasing a top-four spot on the back of a three-game winning streak. On Saturday, the Bombers knocked off Gisborne to move to within two points of the top four. The Dragon batsmen struggled, with only three players reaching double figures in a total of 9-130. Jason Wilson held the innings together with a 70-run effort. Opening bowlers Matthew Livingstone and Jack Baker took three wickets each for the Bombers. The Bombers were without skipper and star batsman Mick Allen, but reached the target with two and a half overs to spare. The Bombers finished on 7-131, with Haydn Ross unbeaten on 52. The loss leaves Gisborne in third, after Diggers Rest overtook it with victory against Bacchus Marsh. A 131-partnership between Lindon Dowsett and Ryan Peters helped the Burras post 6-178. In reply, Bacchus Marsh was bowled out for 118. Sean Morris and Matthew Bulluss snared seven wickets between them. Morris took 4-14 off eight overs. Rupertswood scored a much-needed win against Woodend. Rupertswood’s bowlers had a day out, bowling Woodend out for just 86. Former skipper John Lane returned to the top side for the first time since last season’s B-grade grand final win, taking 4-21. Rupertswood chased down the runs for the loss of two wickets and nearly half its overs remaining. Joshua Smith top scored with 38. Sunbury remains on top of the ladder after an easy win against Romsey. Sunbury made the most of its time with the bat, making 182 before being bowled out in the last over. Playing coach Justin Nelson top scored with 44. Matthew Hoyt took four wickets for Romsey. Romsey started well, but was bowled out for 135. Rowan Stott top scored with 23. Steven Jenkin was the best of the bowlers, taking four wickets.

sides, but this season we’ll be playing sides we haven’t faced before,” he said. “Getting a win is an aim, but the main focus is getting the girls together. “There’s a really good culture … if a win comes along, even better.” Muir said he hopes to get former Kyneton youth player Ainslie Kemp down to the club some time during the season. Kemp will play in the inaugural AFL women’s season after being drafted by Melbourne, and Muir said she is someone players can look up to and learn from. Kemp’s VU Spurs’ teammate Kylie Nicolaci will help Muir with the coaching. Come and try night details: www.facebook. com/events/1635829266719435/ Tara Murray

A century from captain Steve Grey wasn’t enough for Sunbury United to secure victory against St Anthonys in Gisborne and District Cricket Association B grade. Grey made 110 in United’s 2-221. St Anthonys made the runs with three overs to spare, amassing 6-222. Lancefield, Bacchus Marsh and Wallan were the other winners.

Gisborne girls’ cricket names its stars on the rise It’s not unusual that Gisborne players are named in the Central Highlands representative sides for yearly state championships. Names such as Patrick McKenna, Tom Rogers and Matthew Underwood are just a few of the Dragons to perform at the higher level. But while the names of Bianca Mackay, Georgia Kerr and Molly Sparke aren’t so familiar, they should be, as the Gisborne girls continue to flourish. In this season’s three Highlanders state championships sides, six Dragons girls have been selected – that’s just behind Golden Point, which has dedicated girls’ teams that attract many players from across the region. Mackay, Kerr and Sparke competed in the under-18 championships late last year, with Kerr co-captain of the side. Georgia Paton and Imogen Barlow are in the under-16 team, while Bridget Barlow has been named in the under-14 side. Dragons’ Gavin Mackay said the club had several girls playing across the club’s junior

sides, something they were keen to expand on. “It was something that started four to five years ago,” he said. “My daughter [Bianca] started one year, and then three or four girls who had played cricket at school together decided to join. “I believe we have somewhere between 15 and 22 girls playing and then we have the women’s side as well.” Mackay says making sure girls are having fun is the key to keeping them in the sport. “Technically, they are as good as the boys,” he said. “At Gisborne we try to have at least two girls in each team. They learn to play the game and have fun as well. If they’re having fun, they’ll keep coming back.” Several have played for the Dragons women’s side, while others play senior cricket each week in the men’s competition. This includes four girls who play in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s south grade, along with their fathers. Last season, Georgia and Rob Kerr became

Burras sign up A-grade star in friendly coup

By Tara Murray Young Kara Tessari’s basketball career has taken a welcome and unexpected turn. Last week, the Monegeetta teen was promoted to Bendigo Spirit’s roster for the rest of the Women’s National Basketball League season. Speaking afterwards, the 17-year-old was still shocked to be part of the country’s best competition. “I’ve been a development player since the start of the season for Bendigo. Because of the distance, they decided to just have the squad of 12 players train after the Christmas break. “We were told, if injuries came up, we might need you to help the team.” With fellow guard Jane Chalmers requiring surgery for a thumb injury, Tessari continued to train with the side. Then when Chalmers was ruled out for the rest of the season, Tessari was promoted to fill the 12th spot on the list. “It’s unfortunate for Jane, but beneficial for me,” Tessari said. “I’m not expecting court time … the opportunity to suit up, and play and train with one of the best teams in the country is enough. “I’ll try to keep moving forward with my basketball. “Being part of the Spirit is the best thing for my development at this point of time.” Tessari said Chalmers, who has been at the Spirit since joining the competition, has been one of her biggest supporters. “She helped me feel like I belonged,” Tessari said. “After she had surgery, she came up and told me to stay ready. She didn’t have to do that.” For Tessari, the realisation that she could be taking to the court with the best players in the country is something that is still settling in. “I wasn’t even expecting to be a development player … even that opportunity is amazing. “You wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.” For the 17-year-old, who started playing basketball when she was four at Mill Park, she said this shows all the hard work she has put in has paid off. She said her parents, Michael and Janene, deserved a lot of the credit for driving her across the state to play and train. “It’s surreal to see the hard work has paid off. “I’m looking forward to see where it’ll take me.” Having finished year 12 last year, Tessari has decided to shy away from the American College route taken by so many young players these days. Instead she’ll play again with the Bulleen Boomers in the Big V competition. Tessari will juggle her Spirit commitments

and previously has been part of the under-16 state team as well. “I’m looking forward to playing with these girls. I’ve trained with a lot of them, but not necessarily played with them.”

Diggers Rest has pulled off a recruiting coup, signing former Australian netballer Natasha Chokljat for this year’s Riddell District Netball League season. Chokljat played 29 matches for Australia in a long top-level career spanning Australia and New Zealand. It was Chokljat’s friendship with Burras’ playing coach Amy Carroll that sealed her commitment to the club. Carroll and Chokljat played together at Melbourne Phoenix in the old Commonwealth Bank Trophy competition. “She’s a good friend of mine,” Carroll said. “On the off chance, I sent her a message to sound her out, and she sounded really keen. “She had a baby last year and I thought she might feel like doing something for herself … we managed to get her on board.” Carroll said the club is excited by what Chokljat could bring to the court. “She’s a very exciting midcourt addition,” she said. “To get someone with her strengths and experience around the middle of the court, you cannot buy that.” It’s not just on court that Chokljat’s signing will make a mark. “She coached the ACU Sovereigns [Victorian Netball League side] for a year, and will be a great help to me,” Carroll said. “I will draw on her experiences. “It’ll be an all-round benefit for the club. It’s got everyone excited with a lot of people looking up to her.” Carroll said there will be a similar A-grade line-up to last season when the team finished sixth, knocked out in the first week of the finals Carroll said they had set the bar a little higher this year. “I really want our team to get up there and be pushing in finals, rather than just making them. “The aim is to finish top three.” Carroll said while the top side would be similar, their other three sides would be a lot stronger. “We had a great turn-out at trials,” she said. “The B and C grade sides will be strengthened.” The Burras will kick off their season against two-time reigning premiers Riddell. ome might think the Mini Convertible is a show pony for people who like to tan while they drive, but we’re here to tell you the buffed body of this little two-door drop-top hides BMW mechanicals that deliver sufficient performance to wipe the smirk from doubters. Our test car was the mid-range Cooper S, with its burbling transverse-mounted 141kW 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine driving the front wheels – a layout perfected by the original Mini 57 years ago. This one can dash to 100km/h in 7.1 seconds and go around corners like a go-kart. The latest two-door, four-seat Mini Convertible – in its third generation since BMW resurrected the iconic British brand in 2001 – is bigger than any generation before it, although the confined back seats are still just for short passengers on short trips. The boot is weekend-away sized. Folding in 18 seconds, the fabric roof sits up on the boot, pram style, hindering the rear view. This makes it difficult to see disappearing smirks behind you.

t had me at hello: a hint of vintage, a dash of Italia, dressed in chic champagne with racy black stripes down the bonnet. Inside, the Mini Convertible successfully mixes disco and class, flaunting an array of LED multi-coloured lights around the dash while harking back to the original Mini design in its circular instruments, vents and door handles. Motorbike-style dials behind the steering wheel move up and down as you adjust its height, and little levers operate the ignition and roof. Super-comfortable sports seats, sat-nav and six-speed auto are standard. Talking of the roof, stash that away in a flash and the youthful fun factor ramps up. The folded roof seriously impedes rear vision but the problem is mitigated by generous side mirrors. You can also have the roof half-up, leaving an expanded sunroof. A small car makes parking, turning and city driving so easy but the downside is a tight, awkward boot space and a back seat that’s almost inaccessible to adults.
