Sunbury Olympic gold medallist Ashleigh McConnell has added another special medal to her collection. The swimmer, who won gold at last year’s Rio Paralympic Games, last week received an Order of Australia medal for her services to sport. Her dominance in the water began in 2010 when she was first selected to represent Australia at the Arafura Games in Darwin. She then won seven age champion titles at the Australian Age Multi-Class Championships in Adelaide two years later, and has put in the hard yards in the pool ever since. Her peak came at the Paralympic Games in the Women’s 4x100m freestyle relay. Sunbury MP Josh Bull congratulated McConnell on her success. “It takes incredible drive and determination to get to the Rio Paralympic Games, and Ashleigh McConnell has it in spades,” he said. “Champion athletes like Miss McConnell give us all a great sense of pride … she has plenty of supporters in Sunbury.” Esther Lauaki

Sunbury burglars strike By Esther Lauaki At least eight Sunbury homes have been targeted by burglars in recent weeks and police are calling for residents to be vigilant. Burglars have hit homes on Albert Road, Bundanoon Avenue, Darbyshire Street, La Perouse Close, Ponsford Place, Ramsay Court, Saxonwood Drive and Wildflower Drive. Detective Senior Constable Renee Prestia, of Hume CIU, said the break-ins happened throughout January. “There has been a significant increase in residential burglaries in the Sunbury area [this

month],” she said. “Some of the burglaries had bicycles stolen and this could possibly have something to do with it being school holidays at the moment. In others jewellery, iPads, mobile phones and other valuables were taken.” She said the burglaries were not concentrated in a particular area. “We are likely looking for more than one offender involved in these burglaries,” she said. “The streets that were targeted are spread out, so it appears that they could possibly be unrelated.” The crimes come as data released by the Crime Statistics Agency last month revealed

there was a 27.2 per cent increase in burglary/ break and enter incidents in Sunbury in the past year. The figures also showed an overall 20 per cent rise in crime across Hume. Senior Constable Prestia encouraged residents to tighten their security arrangements and keep their eyes open. “Residents should be looking out for suspicious people driving vehicles around,” she said. “And keep their homes, vehicles and valuable belongings locked away. “If they see anything, they should contact police immediately. ”

Two Sunbury residents commented on the Hume Eyewatch Facebook page about their experiences with recent thefts in their neighbourhoods. “I know of one these burgs and yes they attempted to steal a motorbike. But didn’t get far with it,” one woman posted. “It’s all over Sunbury. We were cleaned out while on holidays [in September] and they came back a few times without anybody noticing,” another said. Anyone in need of police assistance should call 000 or make a confidential report to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Vandals strike RSL memorial tree Sadness fills the space where Sunbury’s lone pine tree stood sentinel to the town’s Anzac legends, after callous vandals intervened. The Sunbury RSL community was left saddened and outraged after the fledgling tree was desecrated, its limbs snapped off in an attack that took place on January 22. The pine was planted in 2014 at the Geoff Levey Memorial Garden to commemorate the Anzac centenary. A council arborist determined that the

snapping of its central trunk, with hot weather drying up moisture from the remaining parts, made it impossible to save the tree. Club secretary Harry Beckwith said the attack on the tree was “devastating” for members. “They [vandals] have no idea what they’ve done,” Mr Beckwith said. “When you follow the family history of this tree back, it goes to the pine tree in the cemetery for the Anzac soldiers. “The tree means a lot psychologically to RSL members and their families.

“We’re very saddened and enraged that this could have happened,” he said. “The stupidity involved is hard to fathom — these people have no regard for the history and sacrifice that goes with this tree.” Sunbury RSL member Paul Levey, the son of Geoff Levey who was the memorial’s

Finn anger over ‘soft’ crime policy The state government needs to take a hard line approach to law and order, upper house MP Bernie Finn claims. Mr Finn, a Bulla resident, slammed the state government for its “soft” approach to youth crime after 15 inmates broke out of Malmsbury youth detention centre last week. “The youth justice system is completely out of control,” Mr Finn told Star Weekly. “Those inmates are tearing up the facility – they escaped, they hijacked cars and were travelling up to 180 kilometers an hour, and also caused a collision.” A 24-hour manhunt for youths who escaped the Malmsbury youth justice facility ended on Australia Day. The facility was put into lock-down by police after a riot at about 2.45pm on January 25. Of the 15 escapees, six were arrested about 3.15pm on the day of the riot, in Lockwood, following a pursuit. Another two were nabbed by police in Malmsbury. Police said the remaining escapees hijacked two vehicles on the Calder Freeway towards Bendigo, with some taking part in a “wave” of alleged crimes. Last Thursday, Australia Day, police arrested four male escapees in Ashburton, a 17-year-old male in Redan and two males in Colac. The riot, which involved about 30 inmates, started after youths assaulted a staff member and gained access to his keys. Families and Children Minister Jenny Mikakos announced plans for a new “fit-for-purpose” high-security youth justice facility for Victoria in response to the incident, the latest of a string of disturbances at Malmsbury and Parkville centres in recent months. “This is not something that Victorian’s should have to put up with,” Mr Finn said. “We shouldn’t have to be concerned for our safety like we are at the moment. “The government’s softly-softly attitude to law and order is contributing to the problem.” Esther Lauaki

Cobaw tops in paediatrics A new generation of young paediatricians can now be trained on the job by Cobaw Community Health’s leading child health expert. The community health service has been recognised for its outstanding paediatric program and can now offer positions to paediatric fellows or paediatricians in training to spend up to a year working alongside paediatrician Dr Tristan Pawsey in multi-disciplinary child health services. “I’m thrilled to be able to provide support for the next generation of young paediatricians and encourage their interest in working in community paediatrics” Dr Pawsey said. “All children are unique and develop at different rates … quality paediatric care can help families understand their child’s unique needs and receive support. “Cobaw’s child development practitioners work in partnership with parents and families to meet the unique developmental needs of each child.” Chief executive Margaret McDonald said Cobaw’s children’s services program provides strong clinical and theoretical training in developmental-behavioural paediatrics, essential for trainees who plan to specialise in community child health or to work as consultant general paediatricians. Ms McDonald said Cobaw offers comprehensive children’s services including early childhood intervention for children with developmental delays or disabilities, children’s physiotherapy including aquatic therapy, speech pathology, occupational therapy and education support.

namesake, said the vandalism was particularly hard for his family. “I’ve been a member since I was 18, when I joined the army, and my kids are members,” he said. “Sunbury has been fantastic in the respect shown to servicemen of our country, and I hope those responsible are found, so they can learn why this was wrong, and it doesn’t happen again.” Mr Beckwith said that the incident has been reported to Sunbury police, and he appealed for anyone with information to contact police on 9744 8111.

Pet love up for adoption Pet lovers may find their perfect match at an upcoming Valentine’s Day event at Sunbury. Petbarn Sunbury and RSPCA Victoria will host a Pet Dating event on February 11, at which animal lovers can meet loveable pets in need of new homes. Assistant manager Meaghan Lightfoot says the aim of the event is to match displaced pets with Sunbury and Macedon Ranges people looking for unconditional love. “At Petbarn, we are passionate about pet adoption and feel that every pet deserves a loving home,” Ms Lightfoot said. “We are grateful that we can hold events like these, which gives needy animals a chance to find a

forever home, as well as enriching the lives of prospective pet parents. “We know that having a pet in your life means you are more likely to have a healthier heart, be less stressed, be happier … and by opening your heart to a furry friend, it will allow you to be a better you.” Residents can meet up with potential pets and, if they are lucky enough to find their perfect partner, they will be able to go through the pet adoption process instore on the day. Petbarn Sunbury’s 14 February pet adoption day is from 11am to 3pm. Esther Lauaki

Awards for arts, parks and people (Dennis Manktelow)

You don’t have to look far in the Macedon Ranges to find passionate people. The council’s Australia Day Citizen of the Year honour was bestowed on Judy Cope-Williams (pictured) last Thursday. “It’s an honour and it’s certainly unexpected,” Ms Cope-Williams said. “I’m very humbled to receive this award.” Ms Cope-Williams said she’s always been passionate about the arts and has dedicated much of her work to supporting emerging musicians. “I played piano, guitar and cello growing up and music is just my big love,” she says. “We’ve got a big property here and we thought what better way to use it than to nurture what we love. “I think to support Australian musicians is important, both young and old. “The quality of music in Australia is so high, why go elsewhere? The Macedon Ranges is a rich area for arts and music, and it’s so important that we support that.” As chair of the Cope-Williams Arts Foundation – established with her husband Gordon in 2006 – Ms Cope-Williams ensures financial assistance and development opportunities for musicians, with an emphasis on highlighting young, emerging performers from the region. Up to 10 concerts each year are hosted at her Romsey home, which is also where the Cope-Williams Contemporary Art Centre is based.

Macedon Ranges council also honored Woodend’s Ashley Eadon, who was named Young Citizen of the Year for her fundraising efforts, particularly for children’s programs in the Solomon Islands and the Philippines. Last year’s Zonta International Women’s Day Dinner, which drew together more than 200 women, won Community Event of the Year. Amy Bell picked up one of three Community Achievement awards for devoting the past five years to advocate for the development of the Lancefield Skate Park. Juli Robinson, of Bullengarook, was awarded for her service to her local playgroup, choir, Landcare, CFA, progressive dinner group and harvest exchange, while Woodend’s Cherry Servis was rewarded for her leadership role with the Woodend Lifestyle Carers’ Support Group.

First aid path to medic Hume’s Young Citizen of the Year has had her sights set on a career in medicine for as long as she can remember. Sunbury teen Coby Elyse McTaggart says she was “very excited and very honored” to receive her award at Hume council’s Australia Day ceremony in Craigieburn last week. The recent VCE graduate volunteers with St John Ambulance Australia, which sparked an interest in medicine. Now the youngster is about to embark on a double degree in nursing and paramedicine. “I’ve been a member of St John Ambulance since I was 13 years old,” she said. “I thought I should know first aid when I was younger, and I really enjoyed it.” Coby has also been rewarded for her

leadership roles as a student at Aitken College and as a member of the Sunbury Choral Association, which involves her performing at community events and nursing homes. Sunbury’s Carols on the Green Christmas celebration is Hume council’s Community Event of the Year. Hume mayor Drew Jessop said Carols on the Green had been a massive success. “It brought together more than 2500 people,” Cr Jessop said. “It provided local schools and artists with an opportunity to showcase their talents, and also raised funds for local community groups, such as CareWorks SunRanges.” Esther Lauaki

An off-road adventure at Hanging Rock awaits those with the stamina for some cross-country running when the weather cools off. Run the Rock is on April 1 at Woodend, with participants competing in either a 20-kilometre, 12-kilometre or five-kilometre run or walk. There’s also a two-kilometre run for kids. Event spokeswoman Alison Wood said Run the Rock encourages people to “get outside more”, and is put on by Sole Motive, the same organisers who stage Run Melbourne and other charity run events. “Hanging Rock provides the perfect picturesque location for runners to try something different, trading the usual road

running event for a challenging trail course made up of gravel and trail roads, grass and sealed country roads,” Ms Wood said. “Run the Rock is the perfect opportunity to inspire runners to get involved in the great outdoors.” Ms Wood said many participants will be using the event as an opportunity to give back to their communities by raising funds for causes they support. Jacksons Hill plans revisited By Esther Lauaki Sunbury’s iconic Jacksons Hill precinct is on the drawing board of city planners again. The Victorian Planning Authority (VPA) met last week with Sunbury Asylum Alliance, a residents group involved in developing a new master plan for the former Sunbury asylum site and Victoria University campus. The site is central to Sunbury’s urban growth agenda, one of four new precincts currently amidst community redevelopment.

The VPA is co-ordinating the new Jacksons Hill master plan and has already met with several groups, with discussions ongoing next month. Alliance co-founder Alison Cunningham said her group was grateful to be included in the talks. Sunbury MP Josh Bull, who is seeking legal protection for the 35-hectare site, wants Jacksons Hill to be retained for education and community uses. But the possibility that sections of the site,

which is zoned residential, could be sold to raise money to bring historic buildings back to their original condition, were of concern for some groups. VPA regional director Tim Peggie has said precinct structure plans for Sunbury would not impact heritage overlays at Jacksons Hill. “We understand the community cares deeply for the site, and we will be working with Hume council, Victoria University, government departments and the local community to develop the plan,” Mr Peggie said.

He said the sale of areas of the precinct could raise more than $800 million to fund new infrastructure and community facilities. “These plans will also significantly increase the amount of open space that is accessible to the public, with an additional 1300 hectares of land being opened up,” he said. “Many areas previously closed to the public – such as parts of Jacksons, Harpers and Emu creeks – will be available for all to enjoy.” For updates and to be involved in the Jacksons Hill master plan, go to bit.ly/2j9iuk4

Call for youth mentors Mentors are needed for an outreach program that helps young people at risk of losing their way. Whitelion, a not-for-profit agency servicing Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges, has called for volunteers to spend time with young people in out-of-home care and in the youth justice system. Whitelion spokeswoman Nicole Cerminara said the organisation needs enthusiastic people to help young people turn their lives around. “The mentoring programs focus on purposeful voluntary relationships that involve passionate mentors, who assist young people in developing a positive sense of self, whilst building supportive and useful connections with their community,” she said. “Young people often lack stable adult influences that provide guidance and encouragement. “Whitelion’s one-to-one mentoring programs empower young people through consistent connection, showing that people

care, even when life seems overwhelming.” Ms Cerminara said young people are helped to make connections in their communities, which strengthens personal relationships and improves self-esteem, and they are encouraged to find jobs and set education goals. “(Mentoring is) the ability to support another person throughout their journey and provide them with stability and hope,” she said. “Providing them with the tools and support network, so that they can be the best they can.” All Whitelion volunteers complete a screening and training process before being matched with a young person, and there is ongoing support for the duration of the mentoring relationship. Big bash lifts the spirits By Esther Lauaki Close mates of a young father who died just days before Christmas will honor him with a cricket match to raise money for his wife and daughter. Scott “Whammoâ€? Cameron died on December 23, described by his loved ones as a “great mateâ€? and loving family man who struggled with depression. Former teammate Lachlan Whitton has pulled together a side – the Scott Cameron XI – to play in the 20/20 match against Woodend Hesket FNC XI on February 12 at Woodend. Money from the event will go to Scott’s wife, Bobbie, and baby Charlie. “It was an idea that a few of us came up with to help Scott’s young family,â€? Mr Whitton said. “We were all friends – my younger brother was in Scott’s wedding party, and they were very close ‌ and I played in the same football team as him. “Bobbie is a teacher and she’s currently on maternity leave looking after their beautiful baby girl, so we wanted to be able to raise as much money as we could to allow her to be able to do so. “Everyone has taken it pretty hard ‌ many of us lost our great mate.â€? Mr Whitton said the community had rallied together and donated generously towards a silent auction to be held on the day. The match will be a family-friendly event, with plenty of food and drink, jumping castles, face painting and popcorn for the kids, he said. “News of the day has gone far and wide,â€? Mr Whitton said. “The community has been amazingly generous.â€? Anyone struggling with depression can contact Beyond Blue on 1300 224 636. Event details: bit.ly/2jTm3YU

Lancefield Park better than ever The kids playground at Lancefield Park has had an upgrade over the summer, and now includes a double flying fox basket swing, a climbing cube and a wave slide. The upgrade is one of seven priority projects funded through the $800,000 Lancefield Renewal initiative. Another project to come on stream is the replacement of the park’s old tractor, which has been out of service for a while, meaning park committee members have relied on the generosity of local farmers to lend tractors and slashing equipment. Lancefield Park committee of management contributed $15,000 towards the new tractor and $20,000 towards the playground upgrade. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas thanked volunteers from the Lancefield community who have donated their time and services. “After the 2015 fires, local residents have worked together with extraordinary resilience to rebuild their community, and this $800,000 investment has been an important part of that recovery, Ms Thomas said. “From the playground to the bowls club, there is something for everyone to use and enjoy. The five remaining projects include a new skateboard and BMX track, resurfacing the main oval, a cricket club refurbishment, resurfacing netball and tennis courts, and a new security fence and outdoor area for the bowls club.

MY PLACE Musician, former politician and businessman Athol Guy is passionate about his community and continues to help out where he can. The multi-talented Gisborne maestro spoke to Esther Lauaki about life outside of the limelight.

I’ve lived in the Macedon Ranges much of my life. How long have you lived in the area? This will be my 50th year in the area. In 1967 I bought my first big farm in Riddells Creek. I then moved to Kyneton to breed race horses which I’ve done with varying degrees of success. It’s been my major outlet for some years. I bred a famous racehorse and then we moved to Gisborne and we now own Westrock Farms near Carlsruhe. Tell me about your musical background? I thank my grandmother for tying me to a piano at seven years of age. As a five-year-old I remember I would [stand] outside my father’s band rehearsals and watch. I formed my first musical group in 1958 called The Ramblers but eventually become part of [Australian pop band] The Seekers and toured overseas. We disbanded in 1968 and now we get together and do reunion shows. What other hats have you worn in the community? I was a music teacher at one point. Back in 1971 I was elected as a local state member for the seat of Gisborne. I was a resident of the area and I thought that I’d have a dry run [in politics]. I got the nod for three terms in state government.

I loved working in the community. It was a steep learning curve until I opted out in 1979 because I had some health problems. I’m also involved with Kids Under Cover [youth homelessness prevention], Tee Up For Kids and I’m chair of the Jubilee Hall Tourism Group. What drives you? It’s a love for life and a passion to help others. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve said, “Life doesn’t get any better than this. It continues on an upward trend.” What do you love about this community? I’ve had a wonderful life up here. I’ve made many deeply entrenched friendships when I moved here. It’s a very special and involved community. I enjoy being one of the village elders. What would people be surprised to know about you? I was twice under age athletic champion and an officer in the cadet corps. During that time I was also a Victorian junior high jump champion and earned a silver medal once [beaten by] Olympian Colin Ridgeway. Would you return to music full time? I’m enjoying my life. I have never really left music because I still perform with The Seekers in our reunion shows. I think I will continue with what I’m doing.

What’s your connection with the Macedon Ranges?

Prepare for grassfire If you live in a suburb near grasslands, you’re at risk of fire. If you live directly next to parks or paddocks and a grassfire starts, walk at least two streets back. If you live two or more streets away, stay where you are, grassfires are unlikely to spread into built up areas. Stay alert and monitor conditions. Don’t drive, visibility may be poor, accidents are likely, and you could block emergency services.

Screen time limits help young minds The approach is changing on cyber abuse and how to counteract young people’s exposure, writes Alexandra Laskie. The message read: “Send me a pic without your clothes on”. Its sender was a teenage boy, a family friend of the recipient, who was a child of 12. Sarah* was in grade six at a primary school in Melbourne’s western suburbs, and was playing on an iPad when she received the message. Fortuitously, she was sitting on a couch next to her mother, who happened to cast a cursory glance at the screen just as it popped into view. “It was just really lucky that Jane* was in the room,” Sarah’s school principal, Michelle*, said. “It was a really provocative message. “Sarah didn’t understand the subtext … you just have to be so careful.” She said the offending teenager had previously been in a relationship with another minor, who had then become pregnant. Sarah’s message was referred to Victoria Police, and all parties have received counselling. Australia’s leading cyber safety expert Susan McLean said the incident, which happened last year, is not an isolated one. Ms McLean said the proliferation of electronic devices into every facet of daily life, including classrooms, has forced parents and schools to step-up their efforts to educate children about safe and respectful behaviour online. She said schools needed to inform teachers, parents and pupils about cyber safety, so they can be aware of the dangers, such a cyber bullying and the grooming of minors by sexual predators. Their obligation to inform the school community isn’t just a moral one, she said. “Schools have a legal obligation to deal with any online issue they are informed about, no

matter when or where it happens. So if you’ve got kids being cyber-bullied at night and you’re told about it, you have to deal with it. “If you put in place some education to try and prevent that, you’re going to save yourself a whole lot of heartache in the long-term,” she said. Ms McLean, a former police officer, said many parents are unaware that the minimum age to open a Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or Snapchat account is 13, and 18 for YouTube.

‘‘

Schools need to have really clear rules and - Susan McLean boundaries

’’

“Parent education is vital, and it must be delivered by qualified experts, not by people who have an interest in cyber safety. “Schools need to have really clear rules and boundaries in place, so that children and parents are very clear about what is expected of them. “I deal with schools where parents are bullying teachers, parents are bullying other students, so policies needs to encompass the whole school community, not just the teacher or not just the child.” She said cyber-bullying and exposure to pornography often starts in grade two, while the sharing of naked and semi-naked photos is not uncommon among grade fives and sixes. Her experience is backed by new state government data that shows there has been

an increase in reports of incidents of sexual behaviour in Victorian schools over the past 10 years, with the number of alleged incidents rising from 132 in 2006 to 258 last year. To counter the problem during school hours,

to leave them at reception at the start of each school day. “If they (students) are hooked up to the internet, you don’t know what they’re looking at,” he said.

Mr Guest said parents were informed about how they should approach “screen time” at home through the school’s weekly newsletter, and also as part of student induction. He said the problem is unsupervised use. “That’s when kids get into trouble. My rule is that parents should always be able to see the screen,” he said. “And I think any parent who allows screens at bed time is asking for trouble.” Alamanda College at Point Cook has just rewritten its mobile phone policy, rules banning the devices from the classroom for years 7, 8 and 9 students from next year. Principal Lyn Jobson said research supporting mobile phone use at the secondary level as part of the curriculum was outdated. “That research has changed,” she said. “It now says it’s impacting their mindfulness, their brain chemistry and their focus. “We tried to go with the ‘let them use it’ approach, but they [mobile phones] were a constant distraction … so as of next year, they’ll have to keep them in their lockers.” She said teachers had expected a pushback from students about the new rules, but there had been none … “the kids actually agreed”. She said some students already voluntarily handed in phones to avoid distractions in class. The school also communicates with parents about “close-off time”, when all electronic devices are banned at home, and “blended time” – parent supervised Internet use. “You can’t assume they’re in their bedroom doing something cute,” Ms Jobson said. * Names have been changed to protect identities.

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir enjoys a tasty lesson in south Indian cuisine Sankranti has been open a few weeks, and in that time I’ve enjoyed some nice south Indian food – pooris, a biryani. But I’ve left it to do a story for the weekend when the restaurant is serving up three days of special menus to celebrate the festival after which it’s named. On the plus side, for me that means a beaut and very photogenic feed. On the down side, a one-off vegetarian feast cannot be taken as representative of the regular menu. So let’s look at it this way – my Saturday lunch meal may not be what you’ll get on a regular visit here, but it does represent the care and love that goes into the Sankranti food. The Saturday Sankranti deal costs me $29 (see details below). Quite a bit for a vegetarian thali, eh? Well, no. I’m happy to pay up, such is the diversity of tastes and textures, some of them familiar, many of them new to me, and some even challenging. Latha talks me through some of the particulars and rituals normally involved with eating this sort of festive food. I even give the traditional eating order a go: sweets first, soup, and yogurt last. The sweets don’t look very appetising, do they? Not so – they make lovely eating, though in quite a different way from the more familiar Indian sweets such as kulfi.

SANKRANTI AUSTRALIA Address: 250 Barkly Street, Footscray Phone: 9041 9899 But a lifetime of culinary indoctrination of the soup/mains/sweets school is hard to kick. And the effort of mentally trying to match new and interesting names with specific dishes tumbles into the realm of information overload. So in the end, I just go with my own flow and enjoy the dazzling array before me. I especially like the rasam, the deep-fried and battered okra, the spicy coriander rice, and the rice and vermicelli pudding that is payasam. This has been a humbling reminder that for all the Indian food I eat, in terms of regional diversity and a fabulously rich food culture, I am a mere beginner.

Burras back in the finals race By Tara Murray Diggers Rest Bulla knows its finals hopes are in its own hands. The Burras entered the current round of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup sitting fourth on the ladder and less than a point ahead of Bacchus Marsh. And they are only a point and half behind third-placed Riddell. After what was probably their most disappointing result of the season in the previous round, the Burras bounced back in a big way on Saturday. Facing Rupertswood, the Burras bowled the opposition out for just 125. Burras captain-coach Rhys Berry said the players knew they needed to regroup. “The season was going down the drain if we didn’t win this round, he said. “It was nice day and Rupertswood’s ground is as quick as it’s ever been. They started well and were about 0-25. “Once we got one wicket they kept rolling and couldn’t get any partnerships going. Darren [Quarrell] and Lindon [Dowsett] bowled really well. Quarrell and Dowsett took three wickets apiece. Having bowled Rupertswood out for a low score, the bigger challenge for the Burras was to perform with the bat – something with which they have struggled at times this season. They will resume at 2-61. “Blake Robinson opened the batting and got a quick-fire 30 to get us going, Berry said.

“With such a low total, anything can happen. “We’re pretty confident going into next week. Berry knows the Burras won’t be able take it easy next week, even if they get the runs early. Under the points system being used, every run and wicket is vital. “The first aim is to get past their score, he said. “Then we’ll look at what benefits us most – to keep batting all day or look at sending them back in to get wickets. “If we keep winning we’ll play finals. As well as playing day two of their match against Rupertswood, the Burras will face Woodend in a one-dayer on Sunday. In other matches, Bacchus Marsh put on 189 against second-placed Gisborne. Alex Porter made 62. In B grade, the Bulls are on track to knock off ladder leader Lancefield. The Bulls’ 130 didn’t seem enough, but their bowlers did the job late on day one to have the Tigers in trouble at 5-27. An unbeaten 145 to Paul Scott set up St Anthonys score of 272 against Macedon. Captain Cameron Clayton chipped in with 65.

23 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 31, 2017

SPORT Jets add serious firepower to their top division take-off Sunbury Jets have added more firepower to their women’s Big V state championship side with the signing of two international recruits. Having announced most of their squad, the Jets last week said they’d signed Ireland’s Orla O’Reilly and New Zealander Josie Stockill. Both players have represented their country at senior level. O’Reilly has captained Ireland’s national team and joins the Jets after a season playing for Bembibre in the top Spanish league, Ligue Féminine de Basketball (LFB). She has also played professionally in the Czech Republic and represented Ireland in three-on-three competitions. O’Reilly says she’s keen to help the Jets

make the transition from a division 1 side to a championship division team. “I’m very happy to be joining the Sunbury Jets this season,” she said. “One of the things that’s stood out most for me is how unselfish they are; they spread the floor, move the ball really well and play aggressive defence. “I think I will fit in well with the team’s style of play at both ends and, at six-foot-one, I’ll bring a bit of versatility to the line-up.” O’Reilly says she’s also looking forward to getting involved with the Junior Jets program, sharing her experience with the younger players. Jets’ coach Kennedy Kereama says O’Reilly will bring versatility to the side.

She will also add some serious perimeter power. “She brings European playing experience and has also captained her national side. From a skills standpoint, Orla brings versatility and is able to play and defend a number of positions. She has a great shot with her feet set or off the dribble, and has excellent finishing ability going at the hoop.” Stockill, who has previously played under Kereama with the New Zealand Tall Ferns, adds length and experience to the Jets’ front court. Stockill attended Colgate University in America, where she was the starting centre, averaging just over 10 points, six rebounds and

two blocks per game. She graduated last year. Kereama says Stockill is hungry to learn and improve her game. “Josie will bring some much-needed length and athleticism to our group. I think her ability to rebound, run the middle lane, finish around the basket and defend the paint will give us some great interior presence.” The pair join Chelsea Burns, Monique Stevens, Courtney Duever, Kayla and Bethany Theodore, Alex Darby, Genevieve McCorkell, Rebecca Marshall, Shea Crotty, Jessica Slade and Rebecca Van Kuyk in the Jets’ team for their first season in top division. Riddell T20 double blow By Tara Murray Two finals defeats have brought to an end Riddell’s T20 campaign. Already handling their regular Gisborne and District Cricket Association commitments, the Bombers spent the past few weeks also juggling T20 finals in the Cricket Willow Cup and the Cricket Victoria Regional Big Bash. On Sunday, they fell short against East Belmont in the semi-finals of the regional big bash. A win would have seen the Bombers through to the grand final at the MCG. East Belmont started well and was cruising at 2-93. But the Bombers worked their way back into the game, with two wickets in as many balls to Jack Baker playing a big role. East Belmont posted 7-161 on a small, quick ground. Bombers coach Mick Allen said his side had responded well to restrict East Belmont after its flying start. The Bombers’ chase started well, with Allen and Haydn Ross putting on 48 for the first partnership. Despite a fourth-wicket partnership between Allen and Baker that looked to have the Bombers on track, the task proved too hard. “The spinners tied us up a bit,” Allen said. “We got going with Bakes – he had a run-out [backing up], which was a little unfortunate. If he had have stayed in for another over or two, it could have been a different story.” With Allen and Baker back in the sheds, the Bombers needed some big hitting in the final few overs. But pushing hard for runs brought the Bombers undone – they lost four wickets in as many balls in the 19th over. If not for a dropped catch, they would have lost five wickets in a row. The final wicket fell with four balls remaining, leaving the Bombers 18 runs short of victory. Allen top scored with 43 and Baker made 35. Allen said that despite the loss, it had been a good learning experience for the side. “We’ve gone from being a hard-wicket team to playing on turf,” he said. “We had to go and buy some of the players spikes the last few weeks. It’s been a massive learning curve and we’ve been playing a lot of cricket.” The loss followed a defeat at the hands of Mt Clear in the division 1 final of the region’s Cricket Willow T20 competition. Missing several of their regular side, the Bombers were punished, with Mt Clear posting a massive 4-255. Mackenzie Casson was the best of the bowlers with 2-35. The Bombers could manage only 8-141 off their 20 overs. Allen top scored with 53. Allen said it was yet another experience for the playing group. “We probably had nine players out on Thursday, which made it tough,” he said. “It was a big learning curve, a fast one at that.”

Sunbury Lawn Tennis Club needs more members to join Grace and Ethan Taylor, Bianca Tirpkos, David Theuma, Anna Tirpkos and John Tirpkos. (Damian Visentini)

Come and try at open day on Sunbury courts Those competing at the Australian Open aren’t the only ones hitting centre court. Sunbury Lawn Tennis Club members have been making the most of the sunny weather to have a hit. The club is the biggest in Melbourne’s west and in the top 20 in the state. This Sunday, the club will host a special open day to encourage more players to join in and learn the game. The free day includes programs for all ages, including ANZ Hot Shots for kids, lessons for adults, hit the target competitions and social tennis, plus there’ll be a barbecue lunch. There’s also free racquet hire. Coach David Theuma, who will co-ordinate activities on the day, said anyone aged five and more could come and try out at the open day. He said the club wants more members. Currently, the club has men’s ladies and mixed competitions, which are played on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights across 16 courts. Hot Shots runs on Wednesday nights and children’s competitions on Saturdays. The club also has sides participating in the Macedon Ranges Tennis Association. It’s a big year for the club, with work on the much-awaited new club rooms set to get underway in the middle of the year. This will be a welcome relief for members. “They are too small,” Theuma said. “We have about 450 members and, when we have competitions and presentation nights, we don’t have the room to fit everyone in,” he said. Details: 0411 312 744 Jack Baker was the best of the Bombers’ bowlers with three wickets. (Shawn Smits)

Fresh faces a positive force for Gisborne youngsters There’s a buzz going around Gisborne Football Club during the off-season. Having already secured the services of AFL premiership player Clinton Young, the club has added some VFL talent. Former Collingwood player and Gisborne Rookies junior Matthew Goodyear and his former Collingwood teammate, Darrean Wyatt, have signed two-year contracts, with the Bulldogs to be their local aligned club. James Ferry, another Bulldogs junior, has also signed with the club. He’s still deciding about whether to continue his VFL career with Essendon. Coach Brad Spear said that while he wasn’t expecting the VFL players to play a lot of football with the Bulldogs, their presence would be a massive boost for the young playing group.

“Darrean is good friends with Matt and he was looking for a club to be aligned with,” Spear said. “He spoke to us and liked the direction we’re heading. “It just gives our players a little bit of hope and positivity. “The young guys look up to players who have played AFL and VFL.” Spear said Young, who is a playing assistant coach, had been fantastic working with the players. Ferry and Goodyear aren’t the only players returning to their home club. Andre Headberry returns after a season at Monash Blues in the Victorian Amateur Football Association, in which he led the club’s goal kicking.

Jack Baker returns from playing with Riddell District Football League side Riddell, while his younger brother, Ryan, will play with the Bulldogs full-time this season after spending the past couple of seasons with the Calder Cannons. Spear said the return of local players was bringing a positive feeling to the club. “It’s good to have local boys returning to the club,” he said. “As a coach, you can see a positive feel around the club and it drives us forward. “Andre gives us an option going forward. He’s a real dynamic player. “Jack comes back from Riddell and is another really good forward. “His brother decided he wanted to play for us this year and the two wanted to play together.”

Bombers hit their straps By Tara Murray Heading into the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup season, Riddell was seen as one of the teams to beat. So when the Bombers were sitting last after six rounds, questions were being asked about where they were going to find some good form to bolster their premiership hopes. The Bombers started to build heading into Christmas, winning their last two games of the year. Come the new year, the Bombers started to really fire, winning their first two games of 2017. But the real test for the Bombers came at the weekend against ladder leader Sunbury. Sunbury entered the game with two losses for the season. No one saw what was coming on day one of the match – the Bombers destroyed Sunbury. Just three bowlers were needed as the Bombers dismissed Sunbury for a dismal 50. Bombers coach Mick Allen was as surprised as anyone. “We’re starting to hit a purple patch at the moment and really hitting our straps,” he said. “It was a big surprise, to take Sunbury out for 50, as they’ve been really good all year. I guess that’s cricket and we’ll take it.” Matthew Livingstone and Jack Baker took two wickets each opening the bowling, with James Hughes taking 5-11 in just his second game for the club. Hughes, a multiple premiership winning captain-coach with Sunbury United, joined the Bombers after the Christmas break. Allen said Hughes added depth to the Bombers’ attack. “We’ve got a family connection,” Allen said. “We had Sunday sippers at a barbecue and he said he wasn’t happy, and I said the door is open here if you want. It went from there. “He loves the big stage and we’ve already seen that. He slides in nicely.” The Bombers secured first innings points and will resume at 4-140. Brendan Alger made a quick-fire 42. Allen said that with a round of one-day matches this Sunday, the Bombers would likely spend a lot of Saturday batting – and conserving as much energy as possible. In a scary thought for opposition sides, the Bombers are yet to play at full strength, with changes every week. Among those missing on the weekend were Heath Wadden and Cameron Moran. “One goes out and one steps up,” Allen said. “When we get them all back we’ll have a fairly decent attack. “We haven’t had the same side in two weeks in row this year. “It is what it is – the boys come in and do their job. “We’re just taking it week by week. We were bottom after round six and we couldn’t look too far ahead from there. We’re going along nicely.” In other results, Woodend playing coach

More importantly, the Bulldogs don’t think they’ve lost any players. That’s a far cry from 12 months ago, when they had lost about half their senior side. Heading into his second season as coach, Spear said that while the expectations were higher than last year, the club wasn’t setting its goals too high. Last year, the Bulldogs finished ninth with three wins. “We have to be realistic that all the other clubs have improved, too,” he said. “We’ll certainly improve on what we achieved last year, I’m confident of that. “How far we go, that is the unknown. We’ll certainly be more competitive.” Tara Murray

Sports shorts Bowls

Gisborne’s lead on the chasing pack continues to grow in the Central Highlands Bowls Division’s division 1. On Saturday, Gisborne won but didn’t have it all its own way, with Romsey winning two rinks in the 114 (14)-101 (4) result. Second-placed Lancefield suffered a shock 95 (13)-90 (5) loss to Bacchus Marsh, Kyneton Gold had a derby win by beating Kyneton 113 (16)-91 (2) and Trentham smashed Woodend 131 (18)-68 (0).

Pennant bowls

Sunbury’s finals hopes received another boost when it defeated another finals hopeful, Moonee Valley, in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1 section 1. Sunbury won 89 (16)-63 (2). The rinks of Mark Cowan, Carla Krizanic and Brad Willoughby had wins, with Wayne Long among the standouts. The win resulted in Sunbury and Moonee Valley switching ladder positions, with Sunbury now sitting third.

Cricket

Ladder leader Lancefield has a fight on its hands against Bacchus Marsh in Gisborne and District Cricket Association B grade. The Tigers looked to be on track for another win when they bowled the Bulls out for 130. But the Tiger batsmen also struggled – they were 5-27 at stumps on day one of the two-day match. East Sunbury is 1-15 chasing Woodend’s 255, while Sunbury United put on 9-237 against Macedon. St Anthonys made 272 against Ashfield.

Golf

In his return to Romsey Golf Club, Darren Freestone won the club’s monthly medal. In warm weather, players enjoyed good conditions as they hit the greens. Freestone won 81-12-69 from Kevin Dunn and Mick Nicholls. Jenny Hartley won the women’s monthly medal.

Netball

Lancefield is holding trials for the forthcoming Riddell District Netball League season. The Tigers’ trials will be held on Thursday, February 2, with players welcome to try out for all four senior teams – A, B, C and under-19s – from 6.30pm at Lancefield Park. Alan Watson is again head coach of the Tigers’ netball program. Details: 0417 506 763 Brendan Alger on his way to making 42 for the Bombers on Saturday. (Shawn Smits)

Michael Nalesnyik made 104 as his side posted 9-310 against Romsey. Chris Burkett took three wickets. Bacchus Marsh made 189 against Gisborne. Jay King took 5-60 for the Dragons.

Diggers Rest Bulla looks in control against Rupertswood, bowling Rupo out for 125. Lindon Dowsett and Darren Quarrell took four wickets each. The Burras will resume at 2-61.

hey might not admit this publicly, but most self-respecting sports car manufacturers have a Porsche Boxster tucked away at their test grounds. Why? Because it is the benchmark. It might not be the most powerful, fastest or most jaw-dropping drop-top going around, but it is arguably the most cohesive, albeit at a price north of $100,000. With a mid-mounted engine, taut body and a chassis tuned like a Stradivarius, the Boxster is pure sports car, bonded as a complete package for driving excellence. The latest iteration swaps the traditional six-cylinder horizontally opposed normally aspirated engine for a new turbo-charged four-cylinder “boxer”. Have no fear, the new, smaller but feistier 2.0-litre engine in the entry-level Boxster (the Boxster S gets a 2.5-litre version) delivers on all fronts, and even sounds splendid with the optional $4990 (phew!) sports exhaust.

little yoga experience helps one slip behind the wheel of this little darling, so snug and low to the ground that it puts you in mind of a racing car – except, of course, that this machine comes with a plush level of comfort. The cabin shows off Porsche heritage in small round driver dials, perhaps too small for the sat-nav tucked behind the steering wheel. We’re missing inclusions I expected at this level, such as a rear-vision camera, keyless entry and keyless start. As for storage, front and rear boots provide enough luggage space for a motoring holiday, yet there’s a lack of handy places for your water bottle, sunglasses and small change in the cabin. With the Boxster straining at the leash, we shook off the cobwebs and let it find its comfort zone with a spin down the coast. Roll on summer, when the easy one-switch roof lowering and raising will get a workout, undoubtedly turning a few more heads.
