Sunbury rallies for Jessy By Esther Lauaki The East Sunbury sports community is throwing its support behind coach Jessy Carroll as he faces the fight of his life. Carroll has been battling stage four non-Hodgkin’s B-cell lymphoma since October 2015, discovered while he was backpacking overseas. The 26-year-old’s health improved to the point where the Thunder handed him the coaching reins of their Gisborne and District Cricket Association side for 2016-17. He’s already undergone 19 rounds of chemotherapy, six weeks of radiation and a trial drug, but none of these treatments
have worked. A fortnight ago he was handed devastating news – he had four weeks to live. Carroll started a new trial drug this month to stop the spread of his cancer, but the treatment costs about $6000 every three weeks. Doctors advised that he would need to be on this medication for at least two years – that’ll cost more than $200,000. East Sunbury’s football and cricket clubs have united in an online GoFundme campaign led by Carroll’s girlfriend, Bianca Moverley, which raised nearly $23,000 in its first 48 hours. “Jessy’s an amazing young man with the biggest heart, and has so much to give to the world,” Bianca posted. “He is one of the strongest, inspiring people
we know and he needs help. Any kind of donation would be greatly appreciated, as it will be going directly to the cost of this trial drug.” Thunder president Keith Osborne said Carroll’s fighting spirit and his willingness to help is why he means so much to club members. “Sometimes Jessy’s biggest problem is that he can’t say no,” Osborne said. “He always has to help, he always has to support. “And when he commits to something, he commits to it 100 per cent. He’s a role model around our club,” he said. “There are not many blokes or players who Jessy hasn’t helped or touched along the way. “I know Jessy feels that he’s not really worthy
of all the support that he’s getting, and I know that he’s also feeling extremely overwhelmed by the support of this community, but it’s all helping him to stay positive, and he’s doing all the right things to stay healthy.” Osborne said people far and wide have thrown their support behind Carroll. “Other clubs have been amazing too,” he said. “It just goes to show that, when the chips are down, the whole community gets together to help. “Sunbury is a vibrant sporting culture and is very competitive, but when they see someone is in need, it doesn’t matter what badge you wear on your chest, everyone just digs in to help.” To donate: bit.ly/2jDveQd

Woodend horse shed opposed By Esther Lauaki A proposal for a large indoor equestrian arena in Woodend is facing community opposition. Macedon Ranges Residents Association has flagged its opposition to a planned large shed at the Woodend Racecourse Reserve for the Woodend Pony Club and other riding groups to use as an indoor equestrian arena. Macedon Ranges council manages the crown-owned land where placement of a shed in front of the old Woodend Racecourse grandstand is planned by the pony club. Council is seeking public feedback until February 28.
Residents association secretary Christine Pruneau said the project appeared to be a commercial venue rather than a community facility. “The Woodend Racecourse Reserve is not an appropriate place for this shed,” Ms Pruneau said. She said it had the potential to take over public land that had high environmental and passive and active recreation values to serve a narrow range of interests. “MRRA hopes the new council recognises the dangers of unplanned development and the sanctity of public land, and gives priority
to the reserve’s environment, and the broader community’s ownership and interest, by not supporting this proposal,” she said. Mayor Jennifer Anderson said that council would like to hear what the community thinks. “We would like to know whether Woodend residents believe a shed of this type and size, and the proposed usage, would be appropriate in this location,” Cr Anderson said. “It’s important to note that under the planning scheme, this project would not require a planning permit. So this may be the only opportunity to provide feedback on the proposal.”
Pony club president Adrian Sisk said the indoor arena would benefit the community, with at least five groups showing support for the proposed arena. “We see it as an advantage to the wider community because it provides a place for groups like Riding for the Deaf or Riding for the Blind to come and conduct their programs,” Mr Sisk said. “Most of the clubs that run these programs are private and very expensive and this arena could provide an alternative for those groups.” Email feedback to dfrank@mrsc.vic.gov.au before 5pm on February 28.

Festival cranks up the call for charity The Macedon Ranges Music Festival is turning the volume up high next month to help raise funds for the Woodend-based Cambodian Kids Foundation. Revellers can come and see some of their favourite bands perform. A great line-up of musicians from across Australia and locals will be on stage at Gisborne Steam Park on March 4, including Stonefield, Lloyd Spiegel, Matt Borg Trio and David Spry, who will be contributing their performances to make the fundraiser a success. Director Jimmy O’Hare said the festival is
run by volunteers as a family-friendly event, with all sales, food and beverage profits going towards the festival’s chosen charity. “We’ve got two stages of live music – one for local musicians and one for the Australian groups,” Mr O’Hare said. “The local musicians can also compete to win the lead slot for next year’s festival, which is a nice incentive for them. “We’re going bigger and better this year for the festival in the hope of raising as much as we can for this charity.” The festival runs from noon until 10pm and

An out-of-control grass fire swept across paddocks and threatened homes near the Bulla-Diggers Rest Road last Saturday, with 34 fire trucks and four air crews scrambling to get it under control. One house was damaged while residents at others were told it was too late to leave after the fire broke out at 11.20 am. There were no reports of injuries. Crews manning the Country Fire Authority tankers and a fire-bombing plane managed to bring the blaze under control about 3pm. Strong northerly winds fanned the flames, aided by temperatures up to 34 degrees. Firefighters issued an emergency warning at 1.15pm telling locals it was no longer safe to leave their houses, as flames raced south toward the Calder Freeway along Coopers Road. CFA spokesman Steve Pitcher said about 110 hectares had been burned once the flames died down. “(The fire) changed direction several times during the day, which created conditions for firefighters that were a cause for concern for our safety,” Mr Pitcher said. “It makes it very difficult to fight.” The owner of Sampenny Kennels and Cattery at Bulla, Bob Laider, was forced to leave his animals behind when the CFA ordered him to evacuate. He said a neighbour stayed behind, and had assured him that the dogs and cats were all fine. The nearby Organ Pipes National Park was closed while firefighters battled the blaze heading in its direction. Esther Lauaki, with The Age

The Victorian Coroners Court will determine whether there is a need for an inquest into the light plane accident that caused the death of Terry Otway, a 79-year-old from Sunbury, in April last year. Mr Otway was on a training flight with a 48-year-old Lower Templestowe man who had just moved from Sydney. Both men were experienced pilots and both died in the Lancefield accident. The Brumby 600, which is a single-engine two-seater sports-type light plane, took off from Penfield Flight School airfield but later crashed at a property near the corner of Kyneton-Lancefield and Shannons roads.

Men’s health is on the agenda as Sunbury Community Health launches its new Sons of the West program. The free program, run by the Western Bulldogs across the western suburbs since 2013, will kick off on February 16 for the first time in Sunbury. Sons of the West promotes healthy lifestyles and aims to prevent disease in men through workshops, activities and information sessions. The “pre-season” sessions will run every Thursday for 10 weeks at Goonawarra Primary School hall, to be followed by a 10-week “main season” program that will include workshops on broader health and wellbeing issues. Exercise physiologist Adam Demirtel, who will facilitate the pre-season sessions, says
he is excited about bringing the program to Sunbury. “The Western Bulldogs have had great success with the program,” he said. “I’ve seen a need in Sunbury for male-focussed health programs to help men with their general health and help them become more aware about seeing a GP regularly, looking after their eating and exercising.” Men don’t need to register or book and are being encouraged to turn up with a water bottle and wearing comfortable clothes to exercise in. The program will run until April 20 every Thursday from 7-8.30pm. Details: www. sunburychc.org.au/events or 9744 4455 Esther Lauaki

Road upgrades roll out
Kyneton train service boost
By Esther Lauaki A new design for Sunbury’s notorious Gap Road and Horne Street intersection is on the drawing board as the latest round of roads funding is handed out. The intersection has long been the bane of existence for nearly 40,000 motorists who pass there daily, a meeting point for thousands of drivers converging from Riddell Road, Sunbury Road and the Calder Freeway. A railway level crossing nearby on Station Street, about 150 metres east of the intersection, causes long traffic queues and delays there,

particularly during morning and afternoon peaks. The $6.4 million upgrade will remove the existing roundabout and install traffic lights. New lanes and dedicated turning lanes will be added, as will pedestrian operated crossings and bicycle lanes. Raised platforms will also be installed on all approaches from Gap Road and Horne Street, which will slow traffic down as it enters the intersection. Sunbury MP Josh Bull said the upgrade aims to reduce congestion and boost pedestrian and cyclist safety. “There are few things more frustrating to drivers than being stuck in traffic, and that’s why we’re working to fix this intersection,” Mr Bull said. “This upgrade will improve traffic flow and make it safer and easier for people.” The upgrade is due to be completed late 2018.

Meanwhile, the state government will spend $200,000 replacing static signs outside Mount Macedon Primary School with four new electronic flashing speed warnings. These are due to be operational by term two this year. The new signs will remind drivers of the 40km/h speed limit during school drop-off

times, and will be more visible during poor weather and fog. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said driver visibility on the stretch of Mt Macedon Road outside the primary school was often poor in bad weather. Works are set to begin between April and May this year.
Kyneton travellers can now catch two new off-peak train services that hit the tracks last week. A new V/Line timetable includes a new Melbourne-Bendigo service that passes through Kyneton at 8.49pm. Another leaves Bendigo at 9.20pm and stops at Kyneton at 10.05pm. Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said the revised timetable would provide a boost to the regional train network. “This is the next step in the better train network we’re building for regional Victoria – with more reliable, frequent services to get people home safer and sooner wherever they live,” Ms Allan said. “Regional Victoria is growing and we’re making sure public transport grows with it – introducing more trains, building new stations and investing in the major projects we need to boost services across the state.” Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the revised timetable meant commuters could spend more time in either city and less time waiting between evening trains. She said that another timetable change, scheduled for later this year, would introduce even more regional services. “These new services on the Bendigo line will make a real difference, giving people more choice about when they travel and how they get home,” she said. Salesian still strong 90 years on By Esther Lauaki
Mark Brockhus with year 7 students Elijah, Tobias, Gabriella and Chelsea. (Shawn Smits)
The Salesian College community has a whole year of celebrating ahead of it as the school marks 90 years in Sunbury. The college kicked off its commemorations last Tuesday at a flag raising ceremony with students and teachers. Other activities have been planned for throughout the year. The Salesians of Don Bosco originally bought Rupertswood, one of Victoria’s largest private houses, built for Australian-born baronet Sir William Clarke, in 1927. It was first used as an orphanage, then in 1929, classes began in the mansion when a boarding and day school for boys was established.
The school became a co-educational college in 1992, reflecting the needs of Sunbury’s growing community. Principal Mark Brockhus said Salesian College would commemorate its 90th milestone by looking to its future. “This birthday gives us the opportunity to reflect on our history and acknowledge current and past teachers and students, and showcase just how far we have come and grown since this time,” Mr Brockhus said. “Since our humble beginnings, the school has changed immensely. “We now have more than 1200 students, and the culture, activities and curriculum make us a leader in our field.
“It is wonderful to be celebrating nine decades of education,” he said. “We look forward to a future of providing the highest education.” He thanked past and present students, staff, and all who have taken care of “this great old school of ours”. “Our greatest strength is, and has always been, our people,” Mr Brockhus said. “We are immensely proud of this milestone. Just think of the number of scientists, artists, chefs, accountants and other careers we have developed from these very doors. “We will focus on the opportunities and challenges we can provide our students.” www.salesiancollege.vic.edu.au
Motor show rolls to Rock Thousands of classic car and bike enthusiasts will motor through the gates at Hanging Rock next week to celebrate 30 years of the popular motor show. Event organiser Graham Williams says the Macedon Ranges and District Motor Club classic motoring show is part of the annual Picnic at Hanging Rock event, this year on Sunday, February 12, and has become a major attraction on the Ranges’ tourism calendar. “It’s the 30th anniversary of this great event, which sees cars of every make, vintage and style line up to showcase the strength of the classic motoring movement in Victoria,” Mr Williams said. “The event started as a small gathering of club members on Valentine’s Day 30 years back.
“It has grown into one of the largest single days, regularly having more than 1500 vehicles on display … every marque, model and era. “Unlike other classic shows, you are likely to see a classic VW bug parked next to a regal Rolls Royce alongside some local Aussie muscle in an early model Monaro or a Mustang.” Gates will open at 7.30am for entrants, with general parking open from 8am, until 3pm. Motorists are advised to follow signs and directions as they approach the reserve. Traffic is expected to be heavy on roads from Woodend to Hanging Rock, and around the reserve on the day. Entry is $20 for cars and $5 for bikes. Details: www.picnicathangingrock.com.au Esther Lauaki

Malmsbury staff glad for order By Esther Lauaki Employees at Malmsbury youth detention centre have welcomed the deployment of prison officers to restore order. About 40 additional Corrections Victoria staff – including highly trained response teams, senior management staff and extra prison officers – will be brought on board at both the Malmsbury and Parkville centres. The move, announced by Families and Children minister Jenny Mikakos, comes after 15 inmates broke out of Malmsbury youth
detention centre and were at large in various parts of the state for 24 hours from January 25. One youth justice worker, who asked not to be named, said there had been serious staffing concerns for some time before the recent disturbances at Malmsbury and Parkville. “We had been calling for more staff and safer work practices for a long time, but nothing was being done,” the employee told Star Weekly. “[Staff] were often outnumbered by clients, four or sometimes five to one. “Things are much better now that corrections [officers] are on site.
“There is more support and staff feel much safer.” Ms Mikakos said she was “appalled and angry” about the breakout. “More violent recidivist offenders coming into our facilities means we need to have the best resources available to us,” she said. “Adult prison officers will move in … to maintain order and protect staff and the community.” Corrections Minister Gayle Tierney said highly trained corrections staff will also work with police to help prevent “unruly behaviour”. Staff will operate under the Children, Youth
and Families Act as youth justice workers, and will be under the direction and control of the Department of Health and Human Services. The additional prison officers will also be authorised to use weapons, such as capsicum spray, consistent with the Children, Youth and Families Act and Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities. Their deployment follows a crackdown on youth crime, including longer detention stays, more intensive control programs, and a new offence targeting adults who use young people to commit crimes, Ms Tierney said.
Town taps into its past Romsey residents and visitors alike will be able to tap into the town’s history when the latest element of a streetscape project is put in place. The Romsey historic sites plaques project, funded by Bendigo Bank and Macedon Ranges council, will install enamel plaques at more than 48 locations, holding a brief description of the historic significance of that place. Committee members want locals to nominate sites of significance they would like included in the plaques project as well. Each plaque will have the capacity for a digital interface with the Romsey Online portal, where more extensive historical information will be available. Romsey Region Business and Tourism Association president Jenny Stillman said the plaques would eventually be a significant resource for Romsey. “The digital capacity of this project will illuminate Romsey’s rich history to visitors
and local community members alike, in a 21st century format,” Ms Stillman said. “The potential for this as an educational tool is also exciting to the project team members.” A letter requesting permission from property owners for their properties to be researched and included in the project will be circulated soon. “We believe the plaques will play a significant role in an economic development, tourism, education and local town pride capacity,” Ms Stillman said. She said the project will be completed within 12 months of commencement. Esther Lauaki

MY PLACE Peter Ryan has been to 40 countries on five continents, but he still loves camping on home turf. The photographer and traveller talks to Esther Lauaki about an adventurous life. I live in Kyneton with my partner, Stephanie. We live in the home that has been in her family for more than 100 years. Steph works part-time with Macedon Ranges council, and I have my photos in Works Of Art Gallery, Kyneton. I have been selling framed prints at the Gisborne Olde Time Market for some seven years now. I have also been lecturing in photography and an introduction to digital image processing at Macedon Ranges Further Education, Gisborne, for more than five years. How long have you lived in the area? We moved back full-time to Kyneton five years ago to retire here. Where else have you lived around the world? I have lived and worked in London twice for extended periods. The first time for three years in the late 1960s when the Beatles and Rolling Stones were starting out, and again in 1988 for 12 months. I really enjoy travel and have been fortunate to visit 40 countries on the five continents. My criteria for my list is that I must clear customs and spend at least a day in each country. What’s your favourite place to spend your time? While I love travelling overseas, I do enjoy travelling around Australia. A good friend and I share ownership of an off-road camper and have travelled many miles around Oz. We
have just purchased a drone, so we might have to go back and see it all again from another perspective. I have many great memories from overseas trips, but the one that is most prominent was my trip to Antarctica 12 months ago. How did you become a photographer? A family friend gave me a Box Brownie camera when I was young. I have always taken photos – happy snaps really. But it was not until 2000 when I went and did a five-week night class on how to use the camera that I really got hooked on making better images. It takes time to develop your own vision and style. I love print and liked getting my packet of images back from the chemist, but now I do my own printing, I still stand and watch the print come out of the printer. I purchased a secondhand Box Brownie a few months ago to remind me of where I started with my passion. What would surprise people to know about you? I am an accountant and worked in finance all my life, mostly corporate finance. What is the best thing about Macedon Ranges? I am relatively new to the area but I have found a very warm welcome everywhere I go and I love the community side of things. It reminds me of the community spirit I had growing up in Moreland – but that has disappeared in Melbourne these days. It is nice to have it back.

An uninhibited smile the dentures way In their 15 years as prosthetists, Ryan Davies and Daniel Stefani have seen plenty of people who feel nervous about dental procedures.

Ryan is a third generation dental prosthetist, his family holding more than 100 years’ combined experience in the industry. Ryan’s grandfather was a prosthetist for 70 years, his father was in the role for 40 years and Ryan’s already notched up 15 years’ and counting. “We’re all about exceptional care,” Ryan says, “from the first consultation in a relaxed, friendly environment through to ensuring our patients are as comfortable as possible.

It’s why they focus on totally personalised care, taking as much time as needed to explain procedures and encouraging their patients to focus on what they’ll gain from having natural-looking, high quality dentures fitted – a new confidence and an uninhibited smile.

“We listen and respond. And we find that the more patients who are aware of our procedures, the more confidence they have to relax and trust the process. Having dentures fitted is a very comfortable process these days.” Ryan and Daniel also have a focus on helping patients develop an oral health regime that will keep their dentures well maintained and their whole mouths healthy. Daniel says: “Even if you have dentures that won’t decay, oral hygiene is just as essential to avoid problems with gums and to maintain freshness.” Providers of free assessments and quotes, the clinic’s duo carry out full and partial dentures, as well as fit customised mouth guards and offer a same-day, on-site repair and reline service. “If anyone is hesitant about dentures because they worry they may look unnatural, we encourage them to come in and get an assessment and discover just how well-made, professionally fitted dentures can literally change their lives.
“We’ll aim to lay any concerns to rest – and it’s always our plan to have each patient leave with their new dentures making them feel a million dollars and with a smile they’re happy to show off.” Dr Lara Hopkins can treat a wide variety of health concerns.

Bordered by a picturesque creek on a level, tree-rimmed block of about 7150 square metres, this double-storey residence is good as is, but would respond well to a clever revamp. The enviable location also offers a chance to redevelop, subject to council approval. There’s a long, carpeted lounge-dining room with brick fireplace, and the kitchen has a white-laminate servery bench and a gas upright cooker. The four good-sized bedrooms share two bathrooms. In a popular neighbourhood amid top-notch properties, the house is within a three-minute car trip of the shopping precinct and Calder Freeway access – and Flinders Street in the middle of the city can be reached in about 45 minutes. The ideal location and vast potential will have prospective buyers lining up.
Within a ball toss of the primary school, shops and Riddells Creek Recreation Reserve, this winningly located residence is sure to interest downsizers, investors and first-home buyers alike. Freshly painted in soft, neutral colours and newly carpeted, the house is as neat as a pin – as are surrounding gardens – and ready for move-in day. Three good-sized, grey-carpeted bedrooms with built-in wardrobes share a spacious bathroom. Entry is into a carpeted lounge room with split-system, and a tiled meals area adjoins the galley kitchen. Ample cupboards in a pale timber-look laminate, charcoal benchtops, white splashback tiles, underbench oven, an electric cooktop and dishwasher fit out the cooks’ domain. The meals area opens to a courtyard, and there’s a single garage.

SPORT Rupo shows some fight By Tara Murray Rupertswood doesn’t think it’s a bottom team – and the side showed on Sunday it won’t go down without a fight in its Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup quest. Having worked hard to get back to top grade, Rupertswood has spent most of the season in the bottom half of the ladder, and right on the bottom for several weeks. It played the weekend’s matches from that spot. And it was a poor first day against Diggers Rest Bulla on Saturday – Rupertswood sank to another loss, its eighth of the season. But on Sunday, a win against top-side Sunbury lifted Rupertswood from its morass. Before the weekend’s matches, Rupertswood captain-coach Mark Ryan said his side’s inconsistency had been disappointing. “We’ve got to find some winning form,” he said. “We had been expecting to be a bit higher … we can beat anyone on our day, but we have to be in good touch. The consistency isn’t there.” He pointed out wins against Gisborne and Riddell as indications of what his side can do. What’s letting Rupertswood down is the batting, Ryan said. In its last three losses, Rupertswood’s highest score has been 125. “Our batting has been really poor, and on the weekend (against Diggers Rest Bulla), we had the chance to post a good score. “I wish I could put my finger on it – we’ve got to take the opportunities when they are there. “The last few weeks we’ve been trying to get some consistency and form.” It was its poor batting performance that cost Rupertswood its match against Diggers Rest Bulla. Defending just 125, Rupertswood bowled the Burras out for 170. Aaron Forward was the best of the bowlers, taking 3-18. Ryan should have been pleased with his side’s second innings, in which they made 2-100. Rupo took that same form into Sunday’s one-day match against local rivals Sunbury. Coming off a rare loss, Sunbury made 8-172. Rupertswood managed to hit the winning runs with one over to spare, finishing 6-174. The loss pushes Sunbury off top spot, leaving it to Riddell, the form team of the competition. Ryan said Rupo has given up on making finals, so the goal now is to ensure they stay in the top division. Rupertswood is currently slightly more than two points clear of Romsey, which has slipped down the ladder after two losses on the weekend. “We’re desperate to stay up there,” he said. “We knocked off Gisborne and Riddell, now the form team of the competition. “If we play our best, we can knock them off.” Ryan said Forward had been a standout this season and was unlucky not to have more wickets, while Dale McDonald has also shown some form with the ball.
Women’s side all fired up for Kangaroos It’s full steam ahead for Sunbury Kangaroos women’s football side. Having flagged their intention late last year to field a women’s side, the Kangaroos last week confirmed they had the numbers to field a side for the first time. Kangaroos president Allan Walters said they had 15 or 16 players on board, which is more than the 12 needed to get a team running. But he said the club still looking for players. “The team is 100 per cent committed,” Walters said. “We have worked so hard to get the team up and running and we also have coaches, team manager and goal umpires. “We’ve got no expectations coming in the season – we’re just really excited to get the team up and running.” The side had its first training session last week, with Walters impressed by the skills and fitness of some players. Dani Green and men’s Kangaroo player Braiden Wilson will be part of the coaching group, with the club possibly looking to add at least one other member in coming weeks. For Green, this will be a return to football. She first played football with the Kangaroos when they were known as the Rovers. Her senior women’s football career has included playing with the club now known as VU Spurs. As well as coaching, she’ll return to the playing field after three years off. “I live in the same street as Jarrod [Dixon], the men’s senior coach,” she said. “He approached my husband about getting involved in the club and then he said he wanted to speak to me, too. “I’d never considered coaching and I laughed. The more I thought about it, I liked the idea.” Green said it was an exciting time for women’s football. “It’s a good time for girls and women to get involved, as there’s idols out there for them,” she said. “The club has been really welcoming and inclusive. The team trained with the men on Monday night and that’s unusual.” Walters said the side would play in an AFL Goldfields women’s competition.

Bombers fine-tune the basics with line-up of young talent It will be a different Riddell line-up this season in the Riddell District Netball League. The two-time reigning premiers had a host of departures and a change of coach, but gets a more local feel this year. Eliza Allen returns to the coach’s seat, having previously coached the A-grade side, including a grand final appearance in 2014. Allen also coaches Boroondara Express’ under-19 VNL team, and said returning to the Bombers worked in well with her other netball commitments. “I knew they were looking for somebody and knew they were ideally wanting a local coach,” she said. “I live down the road and my girls will
go through the netball program here. I was definitely keen to help out Riddell and help the local girls.” Allen said there would be a big focus on bringing through local talent to play in the A-grade side. The likes of Meikah Johns, Brianna De Haas, Chloe Meulenmeesters, Kira Baldwin, and Tanisha and Emma Bardzinski are set to get more opportunities in the top grade this year. “The opportunity to play the next grade up and look after the longevity of the club is something we are looking at,” Allen said. “It’s about development and getting them ready for A-grade. We really want to focus on local players.
24 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 7, 2017
“We’ve always had the talent coming through, and we want them playing A-grade here, not going elsewhere. “We’re focusing on players who are currently on the list, instead of getting players from Melbourne to come and play.” Allen said it wouldn’t just be a team of young players, with premiership contenders Ellen Close, Christine Harris and Sarah King all returning. Among those not returning are former league best and fairest winner Lauren Close, who is playing with the Northern Territory in the Australian Netball League, and Cayley Armstrong, who is playing with Romsey. Allen said the main goal for this year will be
focusing on developing skills across the board, so players have the skills needed if they then choose to play at a higher level. “We’ve been so successful across the grades and off the court, and we want to continue that,” she said. “I feel my strength is in the education side of things. “Some people have the wrong idea about skills at the top level – it’s about executing the basics well. “We’ll see how the season goes, but the main goal is upskilling them,” Allen said. “If we upskill them, they’ll keep coming back.” The Bombers started back training last week. Kyneton Golf keeps top two pressure on Lancefield Lancefield’s grip on a top two spot in Central Highlands Bowls Division’s division 1 is under threat. A top two finish looked set just two rounds ago, with Gisborne having already secured top spot and Lancefield well ahead of the chasing pack. But two straight losses, including an upset loss to Romsey, has powerhouse Kyneton Golf still in the mix for the top two. On Saturday, Golf needed a win – a big one – against Lancefield to keep its hopes of a second placed finish alive. It did just that with a 100 (16)-81 (2) victory. Kyneton Golf’s Anthony Mathison, Mark Andrews and Stephen Taylor won their rinks, while Micharl Linehan was the winning skipper for Lancefield.
Lancefield secretary Leanne Dickenson said before the loss to Kyneton Golf it was a danger game, but the aim was still very much on a top two finish and a good chance of making it through to the grand final. “First or second was our aim for the season,” she said. “It’ll give us a good chance to win or at least make the grand final. We rate ourselves a good chance come finals.” A win for Lancefield against bottom side Woodend this Saturday will seal a top two spot. Dickenson said the club hadn’t settled on its best line-up just yet, but was hoping to have it sorted out this week. Lancefield’s second team is set for finals in division 3. Dickenson said it had been a good effort
by the second side, which had to deal with changes each week to fill spots in the top side. In other division 1 news, the fight for fourth will come down to the final round. Only four points separate Kyneton and Bacchus Marsh after both sides had big wins, against Romsey and Woodend respectively. Ladder leader Gisborne again claimed the full 18 points, this time defeating Trentham 130 (18)-70 (0). In division 2, Bacchus Marsh, Diggers Rest, Gisborne Yellow and Macedon had wins, while Macedon, Trentham, Woodend, Romsey and Kyneton took the points in division 3. Meanwhile, Sunbury’s winning streak in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1 came to an end.
Tigers claw to victory By Tara Murray At 8-65, ladder-leaders Lancefield were on track to lose against Bacchus Marsh in Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B-grade competition. Resuming play at 5-27 and chasing 130, the Tigers’ slight hopes of victory seemed done for – they still needed 66 runs with two wickets in hand. But the Tigers’ tailenders had other ideas … a ninth wicket partnership between Alex Laidlaw and Jordan Ladzik instead put the Tigers in a position to win. When Ladzik went out four runs short, it was up to Luke Dowling to make or break the match. The Tigers were eventually bowled out for 137. The Bulls went on to make 4-100 in their second innings. The result was nerve-wracking for the Tigers, mostly for captain-coach Luke Barker. Not at the game due to work, he had to rely on updates from acting skipper Matthew Bowden. “I was on the phone the last half-hour to Matt,” he said. “It was a huge win for us and, with our ladder position, it helps us out big time. “We had five players out. At 8-65, I thought we were in trouble, with both Nathan (Malone) and Chris (Collins) out, who I thought may have got us over the line. “There was so much excitement after the game. It was like we won a final.” Barker said while thinking the game was lost, he knew Laidlaw and Ladzik were both more than capable of holding their own with the bat. “It was only Alex’s second game for the year,” he said. “In his first game, he had 49. He’s been a good batsmen over the time, but hasn’t been able to play and train due to work. “Jordan is the most improved batsmen in the club over the last three years. In five games in the ones this season, he’s hit three 30s.” Barker said the result was even more special for Dowling, as the game was his first top-side game playing with son Connor. The Tigers didn’t have long to recover, with a one-day match on Sunday against St Anthonys. It was an easy win though, with the Tigers making 3-107 in reply to St Anthonys’ 106. Barker said the season so far had exceeded expectations, and he expects to be back at full strength for the final two games of the season. “We were confident of making finals, as we hadn’t lost any, and picked up a player,” he said. “We’re a lot more consistent even than when we won the C-grade premiership. “We’re not relying on Matt (Bowden) to take the wickets, and myself and Chris (Collins) with the bat. “We’ve got a bit of depth, and it’s a good position to be in. “We’re hoping for a home semi-final … anything can happen from there.” In other B-grade two-day results, Wallan was too strong for East Sunbury, Macedon won a thriller against Sunbury United and St Anthonys defeated Ashfield.
Facing its biggest test of the season, Sunbury had to travel to play runaway ladder leader Fitzroy Victoria. Sunbury had a day to forget, losing 99 (18)-65 (0). Mark Cowan suffered his first defeat in seven rounds, losing 25-9, Carla Krizanic’s rink lost 22-19 and Brad Willoughby’s rink lost 24-20. Paul Long, skippering for the first time, lost 28-17. Sunbury is fourth on the ladder, 10 points clear of fifth-placed Glenroy. This week, Sunbury will take on Essendon (2) without Krizanic, Willoughby and Elise Cowan. Brad Janner will return to the side after missing Saturday’s loss. Tara Murray

Kyneton District has been drawn to play East Bentleigh Strikers in the round two qualifier of the Victorian stage of the FFA Cup on February 18. Gisborne awaits its opponent, after being drawn to face one of the winners of round one qualifying matches.
Bowls
Kyneton’s Craig Vincent, Kyneton Golf’s Wayne Turner and Bacchus Marsh’s Justin Webster and Jeffrey Holmes are through to the semi finals of the Central Highlands Bowls Division’s Champion of Champion singles competition. On the women’s side, Trentham’s Glynis Laurie, Macedon’s Gayle Hobbs, Kyneton’s Camille Potter and Kyneton Golf’s Josie Turner are through to the semi finals.
BMX
Sunbury BMX club had 49 competitors in its club meet on Saturday. Zane Hall took out the eight-year-old boys’ event from Ned Smith and Noah Medhurst, while Samuel Todd won the 9-10 boys’ event ahead of Zakarie Williams and Jenson Brown. In the 11-year-old boys, Mason Little was the winner, with Cody Tanner and Kayden Woolley in the placings. Cameron Gatt won the 12-13 boys’ event from Luca Mason-Weber and Jamie Hajnal, while Trevor Weber won the 30+ age group. The 14 and 15-year-olds, along with the open men’s event, was won by Coolum Linane ahead of Joel Basiaco and Corey Sztama.
Golf
Mick Nicholls Senior won the first round of Romsey Golf Club’s Flatstick Roofing Summer Cup. In warm conditions, Nicholls (24) finished +3 ahead of Dave Richardson and John Laing. In the women’s competition, Kath Jekabsons won over Darlene Baker and Jenny Hartley.
GDCA
It was heartbreak for Macedon in Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B-grade competition. After a great win over Sunbury United on Saturday, Macedon was set for another over Bacchus Marsh. The Bulls made 5-228 off their overs, with Macedon on track for victory … when the rain came. Needing just three runs for victory, Macedon was forced to leave the field. The umpires declared the pitch unsafe, and the game was declared a draw. RON’S VERDICT Smart, sweet and oh so Audi.
e’re so used to customising our electronic devices that personalising a dashboard is a no-brainer … so thumbs up for the instrument options in the A4’s virtual cockpit, showing the way of the future. You can choose to have your sat-nav map display front and centre, flanked by the speedo and other gauges, or vice-versa. A knob and a couple of buttons on the centre console operate the audio and phone on an iPad-like screen. It’s all very snazzy, functional and kind of familiar, so cheers to the Audi TT sports car for paving the way. The Audi’s interior is also sophisticated. The finish is exemplary and the rear seat leg room is the biggest in its class, thanks to an efficient front-wheel-drive layout. On the outside, the design might be status quo, but it is still stylish and appealing. Easy to drive, equally powerful and sweet, it’s not hard to feel right at home here.

JACQUI’S VERDICT
CONSENSUS\ A GROUND-UP REBUILD TAKES THE A4 TO NEW HEIGHTS (iStock)
udi’s designers could not be accused of taking outrageous liberties with the exterior of the latest A4. Their theme seems to have been “status quo”. But beneath the familiar skin is the most extensive makeover in the car’s history, starting with all-new lightweight architecture and suspension systems. Bigger in most dimensions than its predecessor, the A4 is nevertheless about 65 kilograms lighter. Our test car was the mid-range front-wheel-drive 2.0-litre turbo petrol TFSI Sport automatic that can speed to 100km/h in about 7.2 seconds – similar to Mercedes-Benz’s C200 and BMW’s 320i. The Audi is bigger inside than those cars, plus a smidgeon more affordable. But it’s less composed under hard acceleration. You could step up to Audi’s all-wheel-drive grip, but that requires an extra $9000 for the 2.0 Quattro. A wise investment, however, is the optional adaptive comfort damper system that takes the sting out of the firm suspension.
