LILI TAYLOR, MAX’S SISTER, WITH ONE OF THE SCHOOL’S MESSAGES OF SUPPORT
Sweetheart Day for Max By Esther Lauaki When one of Bolinda Primary School’s 41 pupils is sick, the whole community feels it. So it didn’t go unnoticed when seven-year-old Max Taylor was admitted to the Royal Children’s Hospital last month for heart surgery. Max, who is in grade two, was born with a rare heart condition, which means he has had regular treatments and countless hospital visits in his short life so far. Bolinda Primary’s newly appointed principal Stuart Telford said the school’s close-knit
community is throwing its arms around the family, with a fundraiser for HeartKids’ Sweetheart Day appeal today (February 14). Sweetheart Day raises money for research into childhood heart disease, with health statistics showing that eight babies are born with a heart defect every day in Australia. Mr Telford said students had decorated the school’s front fence with ribbons and blue hearts holding messages of support for Max. “We’re only a little school, but we’re doing some great things here,” Mr Telford said. “The kids are really happy to come to school … the beauty of a small school is it’s like a big family.
“It doesn’t go unnoticed that Max hasn’t been in class. That’s why when we heard about the HeartKids organisation, we didn’t hesitate to get on board with the appeal.” Saint John’s Ambulance paramedics will give first aid demonstrations and the local Lions club is donating a defibrillator to the school. The kids have also rallied around Max’s sister Lili, who’s in grade six, Mr Telford said. “Everyone’s thoughts are focused on the family and on Max’s recovery, but we also don’t forget Lili, who is playing a role in raising awareness about her brother’s condition.” Donate to HeartKids online: bit.ly/2koACDi Max Taylor.

Secret Rock gig sparks outrage By Esther Lauaki Macedon Ranges council has been slammed for allowing British musician Ed Sheeran to stage a private concert on Hanging Rock. Sheeran, 25, has staged secret events previously in Melbourne and other parts of the world, but the whirlwind Ranges’ visit on February 5 to promote a new album backfired. Australian radio duo Hamish Blake and Andy Lee snapped photos and short videos at the pop star’s secret twilight concert, setting off a chain reaction of outrage from locals.
Residents and conservation groups alike flocked to express disgust at their council, which did not consult with Hanging Rock advisory group members before the show. A council spokeswoman said there are many requests for private events at Hanging Rock, including funerals and film shoots, which are assessed on an individual basis. In this instance, she said, councillors were advised of the show beforehand and Heritage Victoria inspected the site afterwards – no concerns were raised. She said wider consultation was not necessary
given it was a “small scale” private gathering. “There were only 80 guests present, no tickets were sold, the event ran for just over half an hour,” she said. “Such events are permitted under the local planning scheme zoning.” She said the private concert offered significant promotional benefits to Hanging Rock and the region, and had been approved “by council executive”. Federation of Environment and Horticulture Macedon Ranges spokesman Hilary Roberts said the concert set a “dangerous precedent”. “They’ve done this in the most
Basics for a better world shared Discovering, debating and delving into sustainable technologies and lifestyles will be the focus of next month’s Macedon Ranges Sustainable Living Festival. The free community festa of sustainable living ideas will include a food and garden expo alongside a design and technology expo, outside Woodend library on March 4 – the same day as Woodend Farmers Market. Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group vice president Ralf Thesing said this year’s event will build on a year of significant environmental achievements, including completion of the Woodend community solar project. “It will be bigger and better than ever this year,” Mr Thesing said. “It’s great that more and more people are taking up things like solar panelling in the Macedon Ranges, compared to other shires, in an effort to live more sustainably. “People move to this area because of the environment … it’s very important for us to look after it.” Mr Thesing said this year’s expo theme is: ‘Learn, do, share’. “We want to encourage people to take what they’ve learned from the festival and apply it in their homes and in the wider community.” Kyle Behrend of Edgar’s Mission will be among the stallholders at the festival, promoting the work of the Lancefield rescue centre and sanctuary. The technology expo will give people the chance to sit behind the wheel of a Tesla electric car and have any questions answered by sustainability experts. Exhibitors in a community garden will cover permaculture, worms, beekeeping and vegetarian cooking. Details: slf.mrsgonline.org.au
conservationally sensitive area on Hanging Rock itself … there’s been no history of having events up on the rock.” Macedon Ranges Residents Association slammed the council on its Facebook page. “The previous council assured everyone concerts would only be held on the east paddock, but here’s one which wasn’t. Is this a breach or deviation from contract?” the post asked. “This ‘secret’ concert really disrespected the rock, and betrayed the assurances given to community.”
Cops flat out as rock fans hit the road Police are disappointed the road safety messages are not getting through to some motorists following the weekend’s operation Thunder Road. Motorists were urged by police to take care on the roads as thousands of Bruce Springsteen fans flocked to Hanging Rock last Saturday for the long-anticipated concert. Booze and drug buses were stationed around the venue and backed up by roaming highway patrols from Macedon Ranges, Bendigo, Central Goldfields, Melton, Brimbank and Fawkner. Eight drivers were booked for being over the blood-alcohol limit and one driver also tested positive for drugs. Other traffic offences involved three unregistered motor vehicles, one driver driving while disqualified, and 14 drivers who were fined for speeding. Macedon Ranges highway patrol officer Senior Constable Jamie Jordan said it was disappointing that people chose to drink-drive or drug-drive when public transport was available from Hanging Rock. “After more than 40 years of drinkdriving legislation it’s disappointing to see the message still hasn’t got through to some drivers,” Senior Constable Jordan said. “We acknowledge the operation caused some traffic delays, but the results of this operation show that we needed to be out there to make sure road users get home safely.”

Goldfields on the ball A visit from some Essendon footy stars had youngsters at Saint Anne’s Primary School in Sunbury lining up to have a go at the game. Footballers Sam Draper and Darcy Parish (pictured helping Mia with her handball skills, while Deegan and Molly wait their turn) ran a clinic for grade six pupils last Tuesday as part of the team’s community engagement schedule. Chris Yeend, of AFL Goldfields, says the clinic was geared towards encouraging a new generation of players.
“Saint Anne’s Primary School was really happy to have the players come along and share some of the experience and skills with the students ahead of the upcoming season,” Mr Yeend says. “It was an opportunity for the kids to be exposed to the game. “With the launch of women’s football being on everyone’s lips at the moment, it was a chance to draw in those younger girls who might be interested in playing,” he said. Forum to focus on protection By Esther Lauaki Macedon Ranges guardians will have their concerns about the protection of one of the state’s most significant natural environments addressed when they meet Planning Minister Richard Wynn tonight. The Macedon Ranges protection advisory committee was set up by the minister in 2015 to guide the government on appropriate policies to protect the Ranges.
After a series of public consultations the group raised several concerns with the minister including urban growth and how to enforce township boundaries, and preventing urban encroachment on farm land and bush. Tonight’s forum will hear from the government on its response to these recommendations and concerns. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said there was a need for a community conversation about the special values of the Macedon Ranges and
how to protect these from over-development. “We made a commitment to protect the region and ensure that its future is as rich as its past,” Ms Thomas said. “This community conversation is an important next step in protecting the Macedon Ranges’ environmental values.” Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group vice president Ralf Thesing welcomed the forum. He said the group was involved in the initial community consultation and would attend
tonight’s meeting. “We see energy consumption as a key part of protecting the Ranges,” Mr Thesing said. “Protecting the environment is not only about cutting the weeds and stopping development,” he said. “It’s also about the effect that climate change is having.” The forum is on from 6pm until 7pm at the Gisborne Golf Club, 25 Daly Street, Gisborne. Day crew cuts the wait Sunbury Day Hospital has cut its waiting list and improved the turnover of patients needing day procedures, as Victorian hospitals continue to experience unprecedented demand. Health performance data from the state government shows the hospital is performing well in most key areas, including reducing its waiting list for elective surgery from 133 to 84 in the year to last December. All elective surgery patients were treated at Sunbury within the benchmark times set during this period – topping the statewide average of 90 per cent. Half of the hospital’s category one elective surgery patients were treated within five days, which is well below the 30-day benchmark. Elective surgery is for patients who can wait longer than 24 hours for a procedure, while a category one case requires those procedures to take place within 30 days. The Ambulance Victoria data also confirmed that the average time for an
ambulance to reach a code one accident or emergency in Hume improved to 13.39 minutes in the December quarter, from 14.25 minutes a year earlier. Over the same period, the proportion of ambulances that arrived within the benchmark 15 minutes for the most time-critical patients – including cardiac arrest, heart attack, major trauma and stroke patients – improved from 67.6 per cent to 73.4 per cent. Sunbury MP Josh Bull said the government’s investment in health meant more patients in Sunbury, and Hume overall, are getting the care, treatment and surgery they need sooner. Statewide figures show that of the 443,084 people who presented at emergency departments across Victoria over summer, more than a third needed hospital admission, the highest number ever. Poetic healing in Hume Poems about family violence – written and performed by a victim, child, perpetrator and bystander – are part of a digital exhibition in Craigieburn. The One in Three – Poetry Corners exhibition looks at family violence in Hume through a multi-screen installation that presents poems written and performed by community members aged from four up to 81. Hume mayor Drew Jessop said the “incredible and confronting” exhibition explored the complexities of family violence across all communities in Hume, particularly residents from a culturally and linguistically diverse background. “The exhibition … will undoubtedly urge the Hume community to discuss the issue of family violence more openly and discourage turning a blind eye to it,” he said. “A single act of violence can ruin lives and affect a large number of
people … Hume City Council and community members will do all we can to end the abuse which hides beyond fences and behind walls.” The exhibition was put together with the help of Some Kind of Squirrel Productions and the Oorja Foundation. Oorja Foundation co-founder Nayan Bhandari said the exhibition gave participants a platform to express their true feelings in a powerful, honest and safe way. The exhibition will coincide with International Women’s Day and Harmony Day to send the message that family violence is unacceptable. The exhibition will be at the Gee Lee-Wik Doleen Gallery at the Craigieburn Hume Global Learning Centre until Sunday, April 2. Details: www.hume.vic.gov.au/exhibition Laura Michell

MY PLACE Rosemary Davies, who says she’s always had green thumbs, has forged a long career of helping people get the best out of their gardens. She talks with Esther Lauaki.
How long have you lived here? I’ve just returned to this gorgeous area, three years ago after many years living in Bendigo. Have you always been a gardening guru? Absolutely! I’ve always loved nature, listening to birds, making gardens, growing plants and enjoying fresh fruit and vegetables. When I was about seven, our new retired neighbour taught me about sowing and harvesting his vegetables. I also spent many hours outdoors in grandparents’ gardens. Following a career in horticulture, speaking on it for over 30 years with ABC radio, teaching about gardens, plants and environment at tertiary, TAFE and primary levels and writing about it has meant I’ve helped many people. What made you start writing? I’ve always devoured all sorts of books on different topics. Part of my first job as a horticulture officer with Agriculture Victoria was writing fact sheets on gardens and horticulture to give to customers. Where is your favourite place to spend time? Outdoors preferably – in a garden or natural beauty spot, listening to the birds and sounds, chatting, relaxing with good friends, a nice coffee in hand and perhaps a little music.
What other hats do you wear in the community? I am a people-focussed person. I love meeting people and chatting with new people from all walks of life. I was the co-founder of two well established community groups, the Friends of Bendigo Botanic Gardens and also Encouraging Women in horticulture Australia, a Melbourne group supporting women working in professional horticulture, as it is still a very male dominated industry. Locally, I volunteer with Gisborne Regional Events and Tourism. I also write two columns and take photos for the Gisborne Gazette. I assist with the garden and landscaping work at the Church of the Resurrection at Macedon and have several roles there including singing in the choir. What would people be surprised to know about you? I’m passionate about the arts and music, with an eclectic taste and I play several musical instruments. What is the best thing about the Macedon Ranges? There’s gorgeous views, gardens, natural bushland and birdlife. I love the cooler climate and the wonderful fresh crisp, clean air. It’s close enough to Melbourne and the airport to easily enjoy the best of Melbourne and travel easily anywhere. There are fabulous farmers markets, arts and music, great coffee shops and plenty of creative interesting people.
(Shawn Smits)
What’s your connection with the Macedon Ranges? I lived here for a few years early in my life and attended Gisborne Primary and also Riddells Creek Primary when it was a tiny two-roomed weatherboard school. I had grandparents and cousins in Kyneton and Trentham.
Rosemary Davies will speak at the U3A meeting on Monday, February 20, at the Gisborne Community Centre.

Head down the long, pin oak-lined driveway, pull up beside the wrought-iron gate in the box hedging, step onto a brick-paved courtyard with roses and a pair of maples, in under a verandah, then into the kitchen through a side door – a definitive country arrival. But let’s first look at Cumberland’s acreage (14 hectares), taking in broad northerly vistas toward Mt William and the Cobaw Ranges. Set up originally for horse breeding, it has 11 paddocks and connecting laneways, three box stables and great shedding to readily reopen that chapter. Nowadays, it’s fat hay bales and

sheep, a huge rabbit-proof, fully organic, hedge-rimmed garden with vegies, herbs, berries – from raspberries to jostaberries, fruit and nut trees, and an olive grove.... no wonder the free-ranging geese feel so at home. Not to mention enough exotic trees to create a parkland, including Norwegian maples, birches, copper beeches, robinias, crepe myrtle, magnolia and elms. A never-ending bore supplies water to gardens, a hothouse pampers seedlings, and there are two dams and excellent tank water supplies. Now to the great house here, which retains pointers to its c1890 heritage
– particularly the Baltic floorboards in several rooms, beautifully imbued with the patina of bygone farm life. Strapped (high) ceilings, painted-board walls and a fireplace with original surround are others. But it is has lots of clever new bits, too, such as the Weathertex exterior cladding; double-glazed tilt-turn windows; top-notch insulation in walls, ceiling and floor; attractive neutral carpets and bamboo flooring; split-system and ceiling fans; and a 5.2kW solar system that cuts bills. North-facing living areas access verandahs. One is a big lounge room with wood heater, while the others – with those

floorboards – are a sitting area and a dining zone open to a charming country kitchen with all the mod-cons. Of the four fitted bedrooms, the main has a fireplace, plus a dressing room and an en suite with clawfoot tub and pedestal basin. Another has bamboo flooring and a door to a verandah. The main bathroom is modern, the toilet separate. Charismatic Cumberland has the Kilmore’s Assumption College bus stop at its front gate and Lancefield Primary School 10 minutes away. Carole Levy

“WHEN GOOD PEOPLE DO NOTHING” I have thought long and hard about the dreadful and very confronting events of the past weeks – the tragic attack in the city and the appalling behaviour of the in-mates from Malmsbury. To some extent it would be so much easier to leave comment to others and simply take the view “What can I do?” and write about Real Estate. Then I remembered ‘evil prevails when good people do nothing!’ Surley ‘enough is enough’. It would seem that bail conditions are to change and become much tougher. tougher Can any of us accept the ongoing frustration faced by our wonderful police who present dangerous offenders of to the courts only to see these frightening people back on the streets. We must get seriously tough on drugs; tough on violence; tough on the exploitation of children and give our police the support they need.
Be quick – with six plus years of builder’s guarantee and extras not normally to be found, this is a “move in and relax’ home which is too good to miss! • Very large main bedroom w. ‘his and hers’ WIR & spacious ensuite • Rooms 2 &3 - will accommodate queen sized beds & have BIRs • Kitchen and huge walk in pantry will win the heart of any cook • Stylish Family Bathroom
Malmsbury Youth Centre is in serious trouble! At what point in time did 15,16,17,18 and 19 year olds become children. Good heavens! This mamby pamby cotton wool attitude makes me so angry. We now have two generations who believe that they have rights but no responsibilities and that there are no consequences for bad behaviour. behaviour

SPORT Sunbury fights for finals By Tara Murray Two rounds ago, Sunbury was clear on top of the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup ladder, and looked to be cruising. But two losses in as many matches has Sunbury fighting to hold on to the top four. Sunbury sits second midway through the second last game of the regular season, but about eight points separates it and fifth-placed Diggers Rest Bulla. For Sunbury playing coach Justin Nelson, players know they have to find form quickly or risk missing finals. “We had a shocker the last couple of weeks,” he said. “We’ve been clear on top of the ladder and now everyone is catching up. “We didn’t bat well against Riddell and, credit to them, they bowled well. I thought we batted well against Rupertswood and had enough, but they paced themselves well.” Nelson said they’d been working on their game in training, and Sunbury players will have to put that into action on Saturday if they want to defeat fifth-placed Diggers Rest Bulla. The Burras made 179 against Sunbury in the first day’s play on Saturday, Blake Robinson top scoring with 58. Sunbury captain Jason McGann had sent the Burras in, with Nelson calling it a gutsy move. “We’re happy to have kept them to 179,” he said. “If we can’t make 180, I’m not sure we deserve to play finals.” Veterans Heath Boffey and Jason McGann took four and three wickets respectively. Nelson and the rest of the Sunbury side know how important the win is this round, with their final round match-up against third-placed Gisborne. “You don’t want to go into the final round trying to make finals,” he said. “It would be nice to win this week and, hopefully, have our spot sealed going into the final round.” In other matches, Riddell and Gisborne look on track to add another win to their season tallies. The Bombers are 0-18 needing 144 against bottom side Romsey. Romsey struggled throughout its innings and, if not for some late order hitting, may have been bowled out earlier. Matthew Burkett top scored with 35 in Romsey’s total of 143. Matthew Livingstone and Matthew Darby took three wickets each for the Bombers. Gisborne’s bowlers had a good day against Rupertswood, bowling Rupo out for 135. Clinton Young took 4-49, while Jay King and Roby Lane took three wickets each. In the other match, Bacchus Marsh made 9-236 against Woodend. Mili Sepala top scored with 63. Josh Eastley was the best of the bowlers, taking 3-17.
Big win lands Marsh in finals Bacchus Marsh has shoved aside Kyneton for the final spot in Central Highlands Bowls Division’s division 1 top four. Kyneton entered Saturday’s final round with a four-point lead on Bacchus Marsh, with both sides facing confirmed finalists Gisborne and Kyneton Golf. Ladder leader Gisborne dismantled Kyneton, winning by a massive 55 shots, 119 (16)-64 (2). Matthew Bacon’s rink had the biggest win of the day, 41-13. The result meant Kyneton needed a Bacchus Marsh loss or a win by three or fewer shots against Kyneton Golf. Golf was looking for a win to seal second spot on the ladder. Coming off a win against second-placed Lancefield, Golf crashed, conceding all four rinks. Adding salt to the wound was the way it happened, with Bacchus Marsh winning 112 (18)-68 (0). Its form had the side jumping to fourth on the ladder, 12 points ahead of Kyneton. Lancefield secured second spot with one of the biggest wins of the season. Coming off two losses, Lancefield smashed Woodend, 150 (16)-55 (2). Romsey took home the points in the other match of the final round, beating Trentham 92 (14)-84 (4). Meanwhile, in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1, Sunbury is back with the pack after a second straight loss. Having taken it up to top side Fitzroy Victoria in the previous round, Sunbury lost a thriller to fellow finals hopeful Essendon (2). Sunbury had the best of the rinks, winning two and splitting a third, but lost overall 88 (13)-85 (5). Sunbury’s David Glennon said the side had held an early lead before Essendon responded late to run over the top of them. Regular skippers Brad Janner and Mark Cowan won their rinks, while Wayne Long, in his first time skipping in Sunbury’s top team, drew 22-all. Shane Trewarne skippered the losing rink. Sunbury sits fourth on the ladder, but only 15 points separate the side from seventh. It doesn’t get easier for Sunbury, now facing second-placed Deer Park. Glennon said the aim was to ensure they at least came away with some points from the match. Sunbury finishes the season with very winnable games against Werribee and Preston-Reservoir. Tara Murray
Jason McGann took three wickets for Sunbury against the Burras on Saturday. (Damian Visentini)
BMX club hopes skills session will snare members Sunbury BMX club wants more people to join their riders in the fast lane. The club, which has been around for more than 20 years and is the second largest in the state, has more than 150 members ranging in age from under-fives to aged 50-plus. The club is holding a try-out session for all riders aged over the age of four this Saturday. The session includes free lessons and riding tips from qualified coaches to give potential club members a taste of the sport. Those who enjoy the morning lesson can sign up for a membership and start racing that same afternoon. Riders need to be in full length clothing, long socks and covered shoes, and they need to wear gloves and have their own helmets, if possible. The club has a small number of helmets
and bikes available to borrow, if needed, and officials will safety check all bikes. Training is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with racing on alternate Saturday mornings. Individual riders have had success for Sunbury over the years, with club riders winning state and Australian titles. The club hosts one of the biggest events in the Victorian BMX calendar each year, the Sunbury Stars Cup. Burras new girls’ footy team to foster junior stars Diggers Rest Junior Football Club is making its first foray into girls’ football. The Burras have previously had girls play in the boy’s juniors sides, but this season the club wants to field a girls’ side for the first time. The club is hoping to field an under-18 youth girls’ side in the AFL Goldfields season, with significant interest already coming in. The club had 10 registered players for the season before the start of pre-season training last week. Burras’ secretary Belinda Spillman said they wanted to get behind the push to have girls’ football now, so that they would be in a position
to start providing a pathway for female players. The club has appointed Jess Fenech as the club’s inaugural girls’ coach. “She has played in multiple women’s teams and done some coaching before,” Spillman said of Fenech. “She’s new to the area and wanted to get involved.” The club has also managed to get Nickiera Johnson on board. Johnson has been part of the Calder Cannons’ squad. Spillman said there were good signs for the club with several of the boys under-16.5 players trying to get their girlfriends on board and sponsors appeared keen to be involved.
The side will play in a Riddell District Football League competition. As well as adding a youth girls’ side, the club is looking at having boys’ sides in every age group. Last season the Burras didn’t have an under-14 team. Things are looking good on the netball side as well, with the club fielding sides in every age group. The club has put in an application to have two under-11 teams as well. Details: drjfc@outlook.com
Ashfield bats improve By Tara Murray Ashfield produced one of its best performances with the bat for the season as it looked to open its account in Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B grade. Against fourth-placed Macedon, which was coming off probably its best weekend for the season, Ashfield managed 8-209 from its 80 overs. The score was Ashfield’s second-highest in a tough season for the club, which is without a win in B grade. Skipper Ryan Pretty, promoted to the top of the order, enjoyed the chance to face the new ball, making 53. At 5-119, it looked like another low score could be on the cards for Ashfield, but Mark Muir and Corey Woolley dug in. Muir joined Pretty in making 53, while Woolley made 28 not out. Ollie Clough was the best of the bowlers for Macedon with 3-41. Sunbury United and Wallan also enjoyed the batting conditions to post big scores. Third-placed United again showed its batting prowess making 8-284 from its overs against Bacchus Marsh, which sits just outside the top four. For United, Ryan Billinghurst made 77 and skipper Steve Grey hit 57. Thomas Wardell took four wickets for the Bulls, but was expensive, going at just under five runs an over. Wallan is looking to all but end the small finals hopes of St Anthonys. The Magpies, who are second on the ladder, put on 258 after being in trouble at 5-61. Scott Gilchrist top scored with 62 runs batting at No.7. Brad Regan contributed a handy 59. In the most evenly poised match after day one, ladder leader Lancefield is taking on East Sunbury. The Thunder has started to find some form; a win and other results falling its way could see it remain in the finals mix. Lancefield made 166, bowled out with 25 overs still to bat. Skipper Luke Barker top scored with 61, but he had little support, with only two other players reaching double figures. It was the Thunder’s young brigade that did the damage with the ball, with Jaxon Mobilio, Lachlan Brne and Lachlan Wilkins taking three wickets each. Thunder then had to face 12 overs at the end of day, losing the wicket of Liam Sherlock. It will resume at 1-26. Shannon McDorman is 11 not out and Jack Dillon has yet to score. In C grade, Sunbury United and Gisborne produced big scores. United, which is looking for its third win of the season, made 344 against Blackwood. The Dragons made 7-256 against fellow finals hopeful Sunbury. Other sides in the top four, Riddell and Kyneton, are in evenly poised matches against Woodend and Romsey.

Dragons hold breath on finals A surprise finals’ berth could be around the corner for Gisborne’s women’s cricket team. With several new players and a young playing group, finals were the last thing the Dragons envisaged at the start of their Cricket Victoria Women’s Community Cricket Shield season. The Dragons currently sit fourth with three rounds remaining, but missed the opportunity to claim another win against bottom side Coburg on Sunday. Wet weather on Saturday night and Sunday morning meant the game was called off before a ball was bowled. Both teams were awarded three points. It’s the fourth draw of the season for the Dragons. First year coach Tim Bannan said his side has gone from strength to strength as the season has progressed. “We started the year off slow,” he said. “We had four or five girls who hadn’t played cricket before. “The girls have improved 100 per cent since they started in the pre-season … there’s been a bit of education from the older girls.” Sarah Gunn was again the standout for the Dragons, averaging more than 47 with the bat, including one century and three fifties. Gunn has been well supported by experienced duo Amy White and Anne Walton. In a pleasing sign for Bannan, the younger girls have stood up when Gunn and other experienced players missed matches. Many in the side still play junior cricket as well. “Our wicketkeeper Tanae [Bannan] came through the juniors and has only been playing for a couple of years. She’s only 16,” he said. “Shaelee [Bannan] is 12 and has taken a couple of bags of wickets. Lucy Gauci is another one who is also 12. “And then there’s a couple of girls who travelled down from Sunbury in the pre-season and have joined the side.” Central Highlanders’ junior state championship representatives Bianca McKay, Bridget and Imogen Barlow have also played for the Dragons women’s side this season. As for finals, Bannan said that would be a bonus. Despite the Dragons’ youth this season, they would take some experience into finals, after making both the one-day and T20 finals last season. “It’s not something we thought about at the start of the year, losing a few experienced players,” Bannan said. “You never know what can happen.” The Dragons host Melbourne on Sunday. Meanwhile, Dragons’ Gavin McKay was named the Central Highlands representative coach of the year on Friday night. Tara Murray.

e’ve all been guilty of not paying attention on the road and most times we get away with it, albeit not always without a fright. Which is why I love Volvo’s lane-keeping technology. Say you have your head down trying to find a radio station and the car starts wandering across the road. As you drift towards the white line the lane-keeper tugs gently on the wheel to keep you within your own lane, while also reminding you that a radio program is not worth panel damage. You can have fun letting the car skip along the line by itself, and should it start following an errant white line overriding it is as easy as steering where you want to go. I’m a big fan of the XC90 and the R-Design Polestar is the sportiest number with low-profile tyres and a unique grille. The ride is sharp but it handles like a hot hatch and feels light and agile. The two-litre turbo-diesel is extremely economical as well as having remarkable punch. It’s very quick and nicely responsive. Okay, the engine is a tad noisier than most but the 71-litre tank goes a long way.
here’s no getting around how big this car is, and while it has a surround-view camera, a reversing camera and acoustic parking, it’s a handful to get into a small space. But if you’re carting seven people there are few more comfortable ways to do it. The rearmost seating for passengers six and seven is comfortable and generous enough for adults and there’s even room behind for luggage, although getting to it is not exactly dignified. This is a city SUV with low-profile tyres and hard suspension. It’s quick away from the lights and has enough power to dive into holes in the traffic. At the same time the steering is light and supple and the view of the road is commanding. I love the huge centre screen, as big as an iPad and clearly based on one. It has three separate menu screens (toggle between them by swiping) and they control almost everything in the car, from the engine start/ stop to the seat heaters – which are among the best in the business. But I’m not convinced this is worth the extra over the base XC90.
