Pooches do a pack walk
(Damjan Janevski)
Did somebody say it’s time for a walk? This duo, Leo (left) and Sylvia, are keen as mustard … and owner Lucy can’t wait. She’s among thousands of greyhound lovers gearing up for a big day out at Lancefield Park. Registrations are now open for the Great Global Greyhound Walk in June, the aim being to highlight the joys of these playful pets and raise money for the Greyhound Safety Net – a charity organisation that works tirelessly to rehome greyhounds that have been rejected by the dog racing industry. Organisers Kate Christie and Vicki Chandler say the walk is open to all dogs and their humans. “It’s a sociable walk around the lovely Lancefield Park with a barbecue provided afterwards, for those who wish to socialise,” Ms Chandler said. Her own dog, Buzz, will be the event’s “ambassadog” and Ms Chandler says she would love to see as many pups as possible join the pack. The Great Global Greyhound Walk will be held at Lancefield Park from 10.30am until 2.30pm on June 11. Register: LancefieldGGGW@gmail.com Esther Lauaki
Ranges told hold the line By Esther Lauaki A pledge to protect the Macedon Ranges from the impacts of population growth has been hailed by some, and cautioned by others. Planning minister Richard Wynne last week vowed new legislative reforms would protect the Ranges from urban sprawl outside township boundaries and prevent urban encroachment on farm land and bush area. The minister was responding to a report from the Macedon Ranges protection advisory committee, which he appointed to help the government strengthen planning policy that already exists to protect the Ranges. Key reforms involve revising planning statement ‘number 8’, as it is known, which protects the landscape values of the shire,
ensuring town boundaries adhere to policy, and strengthening indigenous vegetation protection controls. Macedon Ranges Residents Association secretary Christine Pruneau, who attended a public meeting with the minister last Tuesday, said the government’s actions were a “move in the right direction”. “We’re really pleased that the minister has maintained such a commitment to [protecting the Ranges] … but the devil will be in the detail,” Ms Pruneau said. “We want to make sure that this thing is long-term and not flavour of the month.” Hanging Rock Action Group spokesman Luke Spielvogel told Star Weekly his group is pleased the shire’s localised planning statement will be revised.
“We had a lot of concerns, specifically about Hanging Rock and the context in which it sits,” Mr Spielvogel said. “Part of the appeal for coming to this area was the rural landscape and the defined township boundaries, which meant that it didn’t have that sprawl. “That was our key concern … we were very pleased to see that the first point of action would be to set aside [planning statement number 8] and rework it.” Long-time Woodend resident and estate agent John Keating believes there needs to be a balance between conservation and development. “There have been various economic flow-on benefits from having people come to these areas,” Mr Keating said. “The visual tapestry
has been enhanced by trees that have been planted and a variety of physical improvements have been made on each lot as a result of people moving here. “But I think some people who want to shut the gates don’t see the balance of everything that’s been created over the last 40 years … the situation needs balance. We’re all conservationists, but we don’t all want to be preservationists.” Mr Wynne told last week’s public meeting that all 12 recommendations made by the committee would be implemented by the state government, the Victorian Planning Authority and the council. “This is all about balancing the need to accommodate more population and protecting the region’s great character.”

Kyneton school on the move By Esther Lauaki Kyneton primary school pupils are a step closer to getting a brand new education precinct. Work has started on the $11.5 million project that will fold Kyneton Primary School into an education hub shared with Kyneton Secondary College and adjacent to Sacred Heart College. Education Minister James Merlino and Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas broke ground for the project last week. “[We] lobbied long and hard for investment in local government schools,” Ms Thomas said.
“The precinct is a flagship for the education state with more than $21 million of combined investment in a new primary school and upgrades to Kyneton Secondary College – providing opportunities for students across the Macedon Ranges.” The start of construction on the project coincides with consultation over details for use of the new trades building at Kyneton Secondary College. The newly installed building is the centre of the school’s $10.5 million modernisation project, which aims to provide apprenticeshiplevel training for post-secondary students.
The building will also house GPs taking part in the doctors in secondary schools program and run programs for local primary schools and community groups on trades and services including engineering, building, construction, robotics, electronics and welding. Kyneton Primary School principal Alistair Rayner told Star Weekly the school’s current site would first be offered to government departments and Macedon Ranges council. “The process has already started to determine the future use of this site, which is now excess to the department of education’s needs,” Mr Rayner said.
“Community consultation will take place to gauge who is interested in using the school site and [as a last resort] the school might be put up for sale if it’s not fit for the purposes of government or council use.” Meanwhile, the transformation of the historic 150-year-old former Romsey Primary School site into a community health centre and surrounding park is taking shape. Cobaw Community Health, the greater Romsey all abilities park committee and Macedon Ranges council are working with architects on designs and plans for the revamped Palmer Street site.

Six major road projects will make driving around the Macedon Ranges a stop-start affair over coming months, the council is warning. The $2.2 million federal government Black Spot Recovery road reconstruction program rolls out along the Kilmore Road at Gisborne, Chanters Lane at Tylden and Fernhill, Collier Street in Woodend as well as the Burke and Wills Track at Baynton. New guard rails and anti-skid surfacing will be installed along segments of Ashbourne Road, Woodend – from Donalds Road to Currawong Road – while new guard rails will be put in place along Cobb and Co Road, Carlsruhe. Macedon Ranges council’s assets and operations director Dale Thornton said the roadworks, which are due to be completed by June 30, target roads identified in routine inspections as those most needing repair. “We manage a large road network covering a total distance of 1700 kilometres,” he said. “We thank residents for their patience during these works, which will make a major difference to the quality of our roads.” In addition, footpaths will be upgraded at Gisborne, Woodend and Kyneton over coming months. Gisborne gets $368,000 in bluestone paving, asphalt and drainage works in Hamilton, Aitken, Brantome and Robertson streets. A new section of footpath will be constructed on Brooke Street, Woodend, between Wood and Bowen streets, later in March, and various concrete footpath repair works will also be undertaken around Kyneton and Gisborne from next month.

Buses back, rail offline again By Ewen McRae Rail commuters should prepare for disruptions on the Sunbury line in March, with large sections of track closed for six days. Ongoing works at St Albans and Ginifer stations – part of level crossing removals involving drainage and platform upgrades – means trains will stop running for almost a week. Buses will replace trains between Sunshine
and Sunbury stations from Wednesday, March 8, until Monday, March 13, with normal train services due to resume on Tuesday, March 14. Level Crossing Removal Authority chief executive Kevin Devlin said while much of the work could be completed while trains are running, it was necessary to shut down the line to finish off some aspects. “The St Albans level crossings were among the most dangerous in Victoria, which is why we put in a major construction effort last year

to get rid of the two crossings and open two new stations,” he said. “We’re now turning our focus to the station areas, so these will become inviting places in the heart of St Albans.
“Next month we need to install drains underneath the tracks, and complete ramps and … shelters … these works simply cannot safely take place while trains are running.” Bendigo, Swan Hill and Echuca services will also be impacted by these works, with coaches replacing trains over the same period. Further works at the stations will include a new retail precinct, a bus interchange and parking, due for completion mid-year. Details: ptv.vic.gov.au.

Trials to help curb suicide rates By Esther Lauaki More mental health and suicide prevention services are coming closer to home for Macedon Ranges residents. North-western Melbourne primary health network will co-ordinate a $46 million federal government pilot program to strengthen mental health and suicide prevention initiatives throughout its region, which includes the Ranges. Other municipalities covered by this
network’s region are Brimbank, Darebin, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melbourne, Melton, Moonee Valley, Moorabool, Moreland, Wyndham and Yarra. Melbourne’ north-western network is one of 12 primary health networks involved in the pilot program around Australia, with participating organisations selected based on higher than average suicide rates in the area, as well as the local capacity to deliver mental health initiatives. Health data from the north western
Melbourne region shows a premature mortality rate of 15.8 (deaths per 100,000), compared with the national average of 12.4. This data takes into account suicide and self-inflicted injuries attributed to Macedon Ranges residents. Suicide is the third leading cause of premature deaths in Australia. Macedon Ranges Suicide Prevention Network spokeswoman Annie Rowland welcomed the federal pilot program, saying she hopes it will lead to a more consistent and evidence-based approach to suicide prevention.
Meanwhile, the Victorian government has also initiated a suicide prevention trial, which also has 12 trial sites. Macedon Ranges falls in the Murray Primary Health Network trial. Chief executive Matt Jones said he is pleased the federal and state governments are focusing on suicide prevention. He said there was a lot of scope to improve understanding of the factors contributing to suicide, and suicide prevention. Dromkeen, kids call Young book lovers, and those young at heart, can rub shoulders with some of their favourite authors and illustrators at the Dromkeen Literary Festival next month. An impressive line-up of authors, illustrators and cartoonists will be part of the annual festival on March 18, which celebrates children’s literature and storytelling. Children’s book authors and illustrators presenting at the event include Gabrielle Wang, Mark Wilson, Marc McBride, Claire Saxby and Glenda Millard. Built in 1889, Dromkeen was once a country estate and later home to the world-famous Dromkeen Picture Book Art Collection. From 1973, Joyce and Courtney Oldmeadow used the estate as the base for their educational book empire, building a public centre of original artworks and manuscripts from Australian children’s picture books. The latest owners, the Joiner family, purchased the National Trust-registered
property in 2013. Dromkeen education officer and gallery director Bernadette Joiner says this year’s LitFest will include workshops, talks, book signings, puppet shows and literature related activities in the heritage gardens. There will also be readings and panel discussions, picnics and play activities, with Riddell’s Creek CFA members on hand to help with the show. “It will be a day for the whole family, teachers, librarians and all lovers of children’s literature,” Ms Joiner says. Guy weighs in on crime strife By Esther Lauaki Harsher punishment for disrespectful behaviour in court, naming and shaming repeat youth offenders and a maximum security prison are among solutions to Victoria’s crime problems being advocated by state Opposition Leader Matthew Guy. The state government’s response to crime, and youth crime in particular, has been under the microscope following repeated rioting at detention centres and a recent break-out at Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre. In response to the January break-out, the government earmarked Werribee South for a $288 million high-security youth prison, but the announcement has generated a public backlash, with thousands of people staging a protest in Werribee’s main street on February 13. Mr Guy joined the chorus of criticism when he visited Kyneton and Sunbury last Tuesday. He vowed to overhaul youth justice legislation, if elected, to include 17 policies that would tighten bail and parole laws and “restore respect” to Victoria’s justice system. He said he would make it an offence to show disrespect in court, deport violent criminals who were not citizens, reinstate Neighbourhood Watch funding and extend existing prisons to hold maximum-security youth offenders. “The whole justice system is not working,” Mr Guy told Star Weekly.
“Our state is in the grip of a crime tsunami and the government has no solutions to make Victoria safe. “It has become a national conversation about how bad crime is in Victoria and it needs to stop. “More police are only due to hit the streets in two more years … but crime has changed dramatically in the past year and we need a system that supports that change in crime.”
‘‘
The whole justice system is not working
’’
- Matthew Guy
Mr Guy asked whether the government had considered using existing prisons to house the maximum-security youth justice unit or approached regional towns that would welcome the economic benefits of having a youth justice facility. Families and Children Minister Jenny Mikakos did not respond to Star Weekly’s inquiries but stood by the plans for Werribee South this month. “The previous Liberal government put these reforms in the too hard basket and ignored Ombudsman reports calling for a new youth justice facility,” she said. “We are getting on with building a fit-for-purpose, high-security facility that is more secure and will address capacity issues for years to come.”

Swim in safe waters Another round of Hume’s Active Ageing Grey Medallion program starts this week. Sunbury residents aged 65 and more can join in the free six-week program and learn to swim and stay safe in the water. Older people feature prominently in the statistics for drowning and near-drowning incidents in Victoria. To help curb this trend, Life Saving Victoria and Hume council set up the Grey Medallion program at Sunbury Aquatic and Leisure Centre. The Royal Life Saving Society Australia program helps people in the older age brackets, teaching them water safety and lifesaving skills,
and to learn their limits. The latest group of graduates received their certificates and medallions from Hume mayor Drew Jessop recently. “People who swim and know what to do in an emergency can not only save their own life, but save the lives of others,” Cr Jessop said. “Swimming is a vital skill to have. We strongly recommend all children and adults learn and practice this.” Registrations for the next program should be lodged by this Friday, February 25. Esther Lauaki

Asthma event blamed for blowout By Esther Lauaki Three months after recording the fastest response times in five years, ambulance services have gone backwards in the Macedon Ranges, opposition Parliamentarians claim. New Ambulance Victoria figures show ambulance response times across the municipality increased by a minute and 25 seconds, on average, this quarter (December to February), compared to the last quarter (October to December). Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas told Star
Weekly at the end of October last year that emergency ambulance response times had improved significantly, and were the best in five years. “Macedon and Hepburn patients experiencing life-threatening conditions can have every confidence they will receive faster responses from paramedics today … despite growing demand for ambulances,” Ms Thomas said at the time. But the latest data shows a worsening of the situation since then, with response times up one minute and 21 seconds compared with
the same time last year. And the number of code one extreme emergency responses taking longer than 15 minutes were up 24.1 per cent across all regions of Victoria in the latest quarter. Northern Liberal MP Wendy Lovell slammed the Andrews government for “failing to deliver”, saying Macedon Ranges residents would suffer the consequences. But Ms Thomas said a surge in callouts for Victoria’s freak thunderstorm asthma events last November had affected reponse times. She said without the events, which crippled
all emergency services, ambulance response times for the quarter would have been steady. She said ambulance responses and elective surgery waiting lists had “generally” improved since last year. Opposition rural health spokeswoman Margaret Fitzherbert said the increase in wait times in regional areas was as a result of the government’s Melbourne-centric policy. “Patients in regional Victoria are still particularly disadvantaged, with response times well below targets. We have a crime crisis, justice crisis and a broken ambulance system.”
Upgrade win for SES Sunbury emergency service volunteers will get some much-needed improvements, thanks to community support and a government grant. State Emergency Service volunteers will receive more than $70,000 in new equipment, and upgrades to their depots and amenities, courtesy of the latest round of the government’s Emergency Services Volunteer Sustainability Grants program. Improvements will include automated gates and sealed bitumen driveways, while a lighting platform will be shared by the Sunbury and Broadmeadows units. Sunbury MP Josh Bull said about $90,000, including funds raised by the unit, would be used to help improve working conditions for emergency service volunteers. Emergency Services Minister James Merlino said hundreds of grant applications had been received from emergency organisations across the state for the latest round of funding.

NEWS STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
MY PLACE The Macedon Ranges captured Andrew Dodds’ heart when he wooed his wife some years ago … now they are his hills of home. The theatre buff spoke to Esther Lauaki about what captures him still.
How long have you lived in the area? Beth, Annie (our 13-month-old daughter), and I moved to our rental here in Woodend in May 2016. We had previously been living at Beth’s parents place at Riddells Creek. We’ve bought a plot of land in Woodend, and look forward to watching our house being built over the next 10 months. It can’t come soon enough. Have you always been a theatre buff? When I was five years old, I was cast as Mr Lizard in a stage adaptation of May Gibbs’ Snugglepot and Cuddlepie. From that point onwards, I have always loved the theatre. It has led me to complete university studies in acting for screen and stage production, as well we tour around the countryside with Regional Arts Victoria and Theatre in Education. As I have grown older, however, my passion has turned from treading the boards to writing, directing, and producing works. What’s your favourite place to spend time? One of my favourite places to spend my time would have to be the Woodend library. I take Annie to Mother Goose on a Wednesday and
S
Toddler Time on a Friday. I also love walking along the Avenue of Honour and the path from the Ruby Mckenzie Park to the Woodend Children’s Park with Beth and Annie. What other hats do you wear? I’m a social worker with both Anglicare Victoria and MacKillop Family Services and have been caring for Victoria’s at-risk and vulnerable young people for eight years. It’s an incredibly rewarding experience … when I was at university, I was introduced to Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed in Brazil, and the line: “We are all actors; being a citizen is not living in society, it is changing it.” Within my job, I am given the opportunity to change tomorrow one child at a time, and it is an opportunity that I am grateful for. What would surprise people to know about you? That I love sport and played representative rugby union for Southern Inland Rugby Union while in Wagga Wagga. What’s the best thing about Macedon Ranges? There are so many things to love about the Macedon Ranges … it’s fortunate to have so many wonderful people delivering programs and services to the community. In seeking to hold an event at the Bluestone Theatre I was helped by so many people … it is this “can do” spirit that I like. Andrew Dodds will host the London Klezmer Quartet at Kyneton’s Bluestone Theatre on February 25 at 6.30pm. Special performance of Klezmer dancing. Tickets: bit.ly/2kvbtWA
(Shawn Smits)
What’s your connection to Macedon Ranges? My connection to Macedon Ranges comes primarily through my wife, Beth. Beth grew up here. When we met in 2013, and during our courtship, Beth and I had many dates in the Macedon Ranges … climbing Hanging Rock, trekking Conglomerate Gully, local farmers markets, strolling through the Forest Glade Garden at Mount Macedon. It was this that led us to choose the Macedon Ranges as the place where we would like to live and raise a family.

27 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 21, 2017
SPORT STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
Final round frenzy to seal fates It’s been a thrilling finish to the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup regular season. Throughout, coaches have said this is the closest they’ve seen the competition, and results have proved this true. With only 12 points separating first through to sixth, the battle for a finals berth is not just dependent on wins, but on runs and wickets made right into the final round. Woodend was the big loser in the weekend’s second last round, after a thrilling two-run loss to Bacchus Marsh. With both sides fighting for a finals spot, a win was ever so important. The Bulls had the runs on the board, having made 9-236 on day one. Woodend started well and, at 3-129, looked to be on track to match their opposition. But two quick wickets slowed Woodend down, even though there was plenty of experience there to ensure they stayed in the game until the end. Woodend got to within 11 runs of victory when its ninth wicket fell. The equation got down to three runs off the final ball, and Josh Eastley was run out trying to get that winning trio. Michael Nalesnyik top-scored with 54 at the top of the order. The loss leaves Woodend in sixth place heading into the final round, with a date with ladder-leaders Riddell yet to come. On the other hand, the win keeps Bacchus Marsh in the finals hunt, sitting fifth in the lead-up to the final round. Diggers Rest Bulla was the big winner at the weekend, moving back into the top four after securing victory against a struggling Sunbury. Defending 179, the Burras bowled Sunbury
out for just 146. Darren Quarrell was a destroyer with the ball, taking 8-54 off 22.4 overs. The Burras were 2-38 in their second innings. Sunbury, after losing its three previous games, slipped from first to third in that period, and could miss the finals – if it losses to second-placed Gisborne in the final round. With nearly a 10-point gap on fifth-placed Bacchus Marsh, Riddell has all but sealed its finals spot after its seventh straight win. Only an outright victory by one of the sides outside the top four, and a big loss, could possibly see them miss finals. Facing the bottom side, the Bombers made 253 in reply to Romsey’s 143. Mick Allen top-scored with 85, his sixth 50 of the McIntyre Cup season. Heath Wadden chipped in with 67. Romsey skipper Chris Burkett took 5-84. Gisborne moved to second spot on the ladder after victory over Rupertswood. Chasing 135, the Dragons made the runs before declaring at 8-142 to send Rupertswood back in. Dragons’ playing coach Simon Harman top-scored with 62 not out. Rupertswood was held at 5-95. While the top six sides battle for finals berths, there’s just as much on the line for Rupertswood and Romsey in the final round. Both sides are trying to avoid finishing last and being relegated for next season. Just under three points separates the sides heading into the final round, when Rupertswood plays Bacchus Marsh, and Romsey faces Diggers Rest Bulla.
Michael Nalesnyik top-scored for Woodend on Saturday. (Shawn Smits)

SPORT Undefeated Gisborne gets chance at premiership glory Gisborne has achieved its first aim in Central Highlands Bowls Division’s division 1 – making the grand final. After falling short at the last hurdle last season, Gisborne players had set their hearts on a second straight grand final appearance, and this has driven them through this season. Gisborne has gone through undefeated, with many one-sided results, and entered the finals confident in its winning form for the contest against Lancefield. The result was one of Gisborne’s closest of the year, getting across the line 95-90. Glenn Johnston Jr and Graham Quaife led the winning rinks for Gisborne, with Jeff Holmes and Peter Linehan taking the honours in the
other two rinks for Lancefield. Johnston Jr said the close result was exactly what was needed as they head into the grand final. “Last season seems so long ago … we’ve done a lot of work to get back to where we are,” he said. “We may be undefeated, but we were tested by Romsey a couple of weeks ago, and tested again against Lancefield. “To win the close ones is really important,” he said. “We get more out of winning by five shots than we do winning by 40 shots.” Johnston Jr said the rink led by Quaife made the difference in the win. He said moving John Evans into that rink late in the season had paid off.
While Gisborne is through to the grand final and has not lost a game all season, Johnston Jr said they didn’t see themselves as favourites. “Last year, we felt like getting to the grand final was the main achievement,” he said. “As we were saying after the win, this year we feel like the job is only half done. Lancefield is a good side and Kyneton Golf is still in as well. “Until Golf [winner of the last two grand finals] is out, they’ll be the team to beat.” Golf faces Lancefield after beating Bacchus Marsh in the other semi-final. Golf won three rinks in the 97-77 win. In division 2, Diggers Rest is through to the grand final after beating Kyneton 93-90, and play the winner of Bacchus Marsh and
Kyneton in the grand final. Macedon is through to the division 3 grand final. Meanwhile, Sunbury had its third straight loss in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1, slipping outside the top four. Facing second-placed Deer Park, Sunbury won two of the four rinks, but lost 91 (14)-66 (4). Carla Krizanic and Brad Janner led close rink wins, while the 34-10 loss for Mark Cowan’s rink proved to be the difference. Sunbury is now fifth on the ladder, three points behind fourth-placed Essendon. Sunbury has very winnable matches against Werribee and Preston-Reservoir in the final two rounds. Tara Murray

East Sunbury’s slim finals’ hopes hang in the balance after their upset win against ladder-leaders Lancefield in Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B-grade competition. Needing 167 for victory, the Thunder passed the total eight wickets down, eventually finishing 9-182. Mark Hourigan top-scored with 38. The Thunder fights fourth-placed Macedon, which defeated Ashfield, as well as Bacchus Marsh, for the last finals spot. Lancefield, Sunbury United and Wallan fill other spots.
Golf
Anthony Freeman took home the second round of the Romsey Golf Club’s Flatstick Roofing Summer Cup. Most players put together either a good front or back nine, but struggled to put together a whole round in the stableford format. Two chip-ins late in his round helped Freeman seal the win with 38 points, ahead of Peter Scanlon and John Moody, both on 37 points. Beryl Cole won the first round of the women’s cup, with 32 points.

Hard road, less travelled By Tara Murray Growing up, Lauren Arnell’s football was limited to kicking with the neighbours on the farm next door or in the school yard. There was no girls’ football team in her home town of Clarkefield let alone the pathways that exist now. In fact, there wasn’t, and still isn’t, a football team, senior or junior of either gender, in Clarkefield. “I’m a triplet and from the time we were two to 15 we lived in Clarkefield,” the Carlton skipper recalled last week. “I grew up on a farm, which was a lot of hard work and I didn’t love it as a teenager. “I had to travel eight kilometres just to get to the bus stop. I place value on it now and the travelling helped teach us patience and that life isn’t an easy road.” Like many children, Arnell grew up loving football. With her dad’s family hailing from the Bulldogs’ heartland of Braybrook, she was a Western Bulldogs supporter, watching the footy every weekend. Keen to extend her love of the game, she tried
to convince her parents to let her try what is now known as Auskick, without much success. “The neighbours were Carlton supporters and we used to kick the footy and play cricket with them. I used to play at school as well. “The boys treated me as one of them and I got tackled as much as they did. I pushed to do Vickick, but with the three of us, we got asked to choose one sport and I was already involved in basketball.” With basketball taking off, Arnell put the thought of playing football out of her mind to concentrate on making it on the court. She played with the Sunbury Rebels and represented the Sunbury Jets from under-12s to under-16s. Entrenched in the basketball community, it was a wrench for Arnell when she and her family moved across the state to Lakes Entrance. “I wasn’t overly excited by the move,” she recalls. “[Clarkefield] was the only area I knew, but it taught me a lot to be uprooted like that.” Arnell continued to play basketball, representing Latrobe City Energy in the Big V competition, and she had planned on
continuing that when she moved to Ballarat at 17 to attend university. “My new friends happened to play football and that had never crossed my mind. I’m not one to miss out so I took the opportunity,” she said. “I made the Victorian under-19 team that same year. I think kicking with the boys when I was younger helped.” Arnell spent just one year in Ballarat before moving to Melbourne. She linked up with the powerful Darebin Falcons in the Victorian Women’s Football League and has shared in nine premierships with the side. She has also represented Victoria six times and is a three-time all-Australian. And last year she was selected by Carlton as one of its priority picks ahead of the inaugural AFL women’s season. The Blues had employed Arnell in an ambassador role prior to that. She now works full-time with the AFL in an education role. “Footy is the greatest game in the world, with the freedom to run around, and I couldn’t imagine playing anything else. “There are now role models for young girls to look up to.”
Riders turned out in force for Sunbury BMX’s local competition on Saturday. The club registered 25 riders at its come and try session, then almost 70 riders signed up to compete in the afternoon. Zachary Watters took out the eight-year-old boys age group, ahead of Freddie Keenan and Hamish Monoghan, while Jenson Brown, Finn Collins and Hamish Hindmarsh took out the places in the nine-year-old boys. Samuel Todd won the 10-year-old boys group, with Zacharie Williams finishing second and Bella Jackson third. Other winners included, Lachlan Hine, Luca Mason-Weber, Jordan Stewart, Trevor Weber, Adel Munro and Rob Slatter.
