Max-imum care factor By Esther Lauaki Life for Max has been an uphill battle so far, but this little guy is definitely taking it all in his stride. For Max, who turns four this week, much of his life has been spent in and out of hospitals or at specialist appointments. Max was born with a complex genetic bone condition that means he needs weekly physio, speech therapy and daily play sessions and the wearing of hearing aids. When the time came for Max to start early childhood learning, his parents, Sarbjit Ladher and Renee Cotchin, decided on Macedon Ranges Montessori Pre-school in Riddells Creek. Ms Cotchin says Max was born with spondylocarpotarsal synostosis syndrome, a disorder that affects the development of bones.

Max is more confident … he’s getting a lot faster - Renee Cotchin these days

“He has lower leg weakness, which means, as he’s been getting older, he doesn’t use his legs like other children,” she said. “This means when we were choosing an early childhood group, I had to get to know the staff at the pre-school, and they were all really great. “I felt comfortable there and I could see the effort that they put in was 100 per cent.” But the old school building had no provisions for Max’s walker, so Ms Cotchin would carry him up the stairs and into the classroom – until last year, when Macedon Ranges council funded a new ramp to improve accessibility. “There was an old ramp, but mostly I would carry Max up the stairs with his walker,” she said. “The new ramp makes life so much easier for us and it also means that Max is more confident to move around the playground – he’s getting a lot faster these days. “Max is a very happy kid and he’s got a quirky personality. “He loves superheroes as much as the next kid and he makes plenty of friends, so it was important for his independence to be able to get in and out of the building by himself.” Macedon Ranges Montessori Pre-school committee secretary Maria Kirkby says that of the pre-school’s 61 pupils, Max is the only

Equine protest builds force By Esther Lauaki A bid to keep an international equine centre on the table at Macedon Ranges council has failed, with riding enthusiasts now mooting a fight in the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. Cr Roger Jukes tried to overturn a decision made at the council’s February meeting, which shelved the state-of-the-art facility along with council’s former equine strategy, which expired before elections last year. Nearly 100 supporters, including Olympic
equestrian Mary Hanna, turned out at a special meeting last Wednesday carrying placards, wearing helmets and pulling a convoy of horse floats. But councillors voted to uphold their original decision. The vote drew resounding boos from the gallery. “There was a lack of transparency and consultation, which are two big issues that can’t be overlooked and are very much a part of this council’s agenda,” Cr Jukes said. “This is the final process in a five year strategy [that has] involved community and the

industry … that is the second largest economic driver in this shire. “In my time on council, I’ve never seen a recommendation to remove a strategy that’s been worked on for five years. “To lose the strategy from our planning means that equine is considered as a general
planning application and has no significance [within the planning scheme], which I find quite unbelievable for a big industry and generator of more than a $140 million.” South ward councillor Andrew Twaits said the community had been “wound up” by the decision, and said the leisure aspects of the equine industry would be best dealt with under council’s leisure strategy. Three residents who were in favor of the international equine centre told Star Weekly after the meeting that they felt ignored and would consider taking the matter to VCAT.

Futsal right on when footy goes off Macedon kids Tarkyn Bishop and Edward Ferguson started playing futsal to keep active during the football off season – but they’re now national, and potentially international, champions. The 10-year-old teammates have been selected for an Australian junior boys futsal squad bound for Hawaii in November. Futsal is an indoor football game played with a smaller ball. It has five players a side. The boys have both played for about three years. Tarkyn’s dad Simon, who helps out with coaching, said he has faith that the team will do
well during the Futsal Australia international tour. “They’ve been playing together in football for a few years, so they play well together,” Mr Bishop said, adding they need to raise more than $10,000 to get the boys to Hawaii. An online crowdfunding campaign has been set up to help them. Team spokesman Allan Spencer-Stewart said there is growing interest as well as participation in the sport. “It is a stunning achievement for Tarkyn and Ed,” Mr Spencer-Stewart said, adding that their inclusion is a testament to the growth of

this thriving community sport in the Macedon Ranges. “The boys were two of five young Macedon Ranges players selected to compete at the Australian Futsal Championships … five out of eight of the players in the Victorian under 10 side at the nationals come from the Macedon Ranges – a phenomenal effort for our region.” Edward was the best under 10 goalkeeper in Australia at last year’s national championships. State planning minister Richard Wynne has moved to allay fears that Sunbury sites of cultural and historic significance will be impacted by growth imperatives. The town residents association has raised concerns about developments in the Jackson’s Creek valley between Rupertswood and Emu Bottom homestead. The town’s Lancefield Road precinct structure plan has earmarked some 34 hectares of land, bounded by Jackson Creek and Racecourse Road, and near the Emu Bottom wetlands, for urban growth. The precinct includes a number of historically and environmentally significant sites, including several 1000-year-old Aboriginal earth (bora) rings and Rupertswood mansion itself. The valley is home to one of Victoria’s most thriving platypus communities. An online petition created last month is pushing for protection of the sites. Residents association president Peter Free said a March 4 forum heard from a National Trust spokesman who said the valley was a unique piece of land. “What we want is to leave that land open for future generations,” Mr Free said. “There are 19,000 homes that are going to be built in Sunbury over the next 35 years – if we ruin the valley, that’s it, we can never get it back.” A planning department spokesman told Star Weekly that the earth rings, Rupertswood and Emu Bottom homestead are not among areas proposed for housing, having been deemed “unsuitable for development”. Macedon Ranges council wants feedback on whether putting cats on nightly curfews and giving dogs off-lead parks will help cut the numbers of lost pets being put down and minimise the impact of feral domestic animals on other wildlife. Council is developing a new four-year domestic animal management plan, with submissions open online until April 10. The consultation will help identify what matters the most to people when it comes to responsible pet ownership. The council’s draft plan asks residents to consider how to deal with the nuisances caused by domestic pets, such as trespassing, attacks on other animals and people, and barking.
Community safety manager Anne-Louise Lindner said that it’s important the new plan identifies a balance between the needs of animal owners and the broader community. “We want … ideas as to how we can encourage and support responsible pet ownership in the shire,” Ms Lindner said. “We know that pets play a huge part in many people’s lives. They provide companionship, encourage people to exercise and promote social interaction.” Residents can pick up a copy of the draft plan from a customer service centre or online at: www.mrsc.vic.gov.au/yoursay Esther Lauaki
Hume council wants feedback on proposed changes to its domestic animal management plan. Consultations will be at SunFest at Village Green Sunbury on March 18, 11am-4pm. Mayor Drew Jessop said there will be 11 new off-leash areas for dogs. “Currently, there are 40 dogs off-leash and six dogs prohibited areas across Hume,” he said.
Business grows
New Gisborne’s industrial estate will expand thanks to a $74,000 grant from the state government via the Victorian Planning Authority’s Streamlining for Growth program. Mayor Jennifer Anderson said the expansion will help council attract business investment, economic growth and job creation in the Gisborne-New Gisborne area. Gridlock plan for autumn visits By Esther Lauaki
the changing of the season is a huge drawcard to the Ranges. “We know that viewing the beautiful landscape up here is a main reason that people visit,” Ms Isherwood said. “With any destination, we want to encourage visitors, but it’s also important for us to balance minimising the impact on the area and amenities with that visitor experience. “Anything council can do to manage that, we are supportive of.” Mayor Jennifer Anderson said social media is behind the significant hike in visitor numbers, especially on weekends and public holidays.
Tighter traffic measures will come into play next month to cope with visitors who flock to the Macedon Ranges to admire the autumn colours. Temporary parking restrictions, no stopping zones and reduced speed limits will be trialled as the council gets ready for the annual gridlock of sightseers seeking the colour spectacular. Public toilets will also be cleaned more frequently and more street bins put out. Daylesford and Macedon Ranges Tourism Board general manager Judith Isherwood said
“The amazing autumn colours are a key visitor attraction and this places substantial pressure on Honour Avenue, Mount Macedon Road and surrounding areas, impacting traffic flow and raising concerns around road safety and public amenity,” Cr Anderson said. “The power of social media and popular travel websites … coupled with many tour operators offering autumn leaves packages, are attracting greater numbers of visitors.” At a community meeting in December, council officers asked residents for feedback on how they could better manage the influx. The recently formed Autumn Festival committee,
which will co-ordinate the open gardens program, will also encourage other initiatives to benefit locals and visitors. Temporary no-stopping zones will be enforced between 9am and 5pm along Honour Avenue, Macedon, and cars will be directed to park at Tony Clarke Reserve, so that visitors can experience the beauty on foot. The speed limit will be slowed from 60 km/h to 40 km/h along Honour Avenue on weekends and public holidays, and sections of the Mount Macedon village will have two-hour parking limits. The trial measures will be implemented between April 8 and 30.

No jab, no play works Macedon Ranges kids are building strong immune systems. Vaccination rates in the area are up compared to previous years according to the latest data from the Australian Immunisation Register. The numbers of one and five year old children being vaccinated in the shire are above the national average, at 95 per cent, with figures for two year old vaccination rates also increasing. Council’s community safety manager Anne-Louise Lindner said the increase is linked to the statewide No Jab, No Play policy, launched in January last year, which makes it compulsory for children to have up-to-date immunisations before they can be enrolled at an early childhood centre or school in Victoria. She said simple text message reminders to parents about their children’s vaccinations have also helped boost vaccination rates across the shire. “We know vaccine-preventable diseases, like measles and whooping cough, can have a devastating impact, so it’s fantastic to see children being protected against that,” she said. “This level is critical in maintaining what’s known as herd immunity. “When enough people in the community are vaccinated, the spread of a disease slows down or stops completely. “This is vital to protect babies who are not yet fully vaccinated and the small number of children who cannot be vaccinated.” Council runs free immunisation sessions each month. www.mrsc.vic.gov.au/immunisations Esther Lauaki

MY PLACE Andrea de Visser is passionate about helping people who are wrestling with mental health issues. She’s a mental health nurse working in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges. Andrea speaks to Esther Lauaki.
I live with my family at Mount Macedon. I fell in love with the area many years ago when my husband took me for a Sunday drive – I told him instantly this is where I want to live. We’ve lived in the area just over three years. What made you become a mental health nurse? While I worked as a registered nurse in acute clinical settings, I felt the need to gain a relationship with each client in order to help in the recovery process. I enjoyed learning about mental health and, as a result my enthusiasm was awarded by a scholarship to become a mental health nurse. Presently, I am practicing as a mental health nurse employed in the Macedon Ranges by CareinMind, an allied psychological services provider. What does the role involve? My role involves everything from counselling, medication education, case management and symptom management, to lifestyle adjustment, grief and loss counselling, goal-setting and confidence-lifting consultation. What other hats do you wear in the community? I’m also the owner and operator of Mount Macedon Beauty and also support Project Respect.
Why do you think your role as a mental health nurse is so important in the Macedon Ranges? There is a significant lack of healthcare in regards to mental health. This in itself has been the greatest impetus for myself to commence working in the community, helping better, where possible, the lives of individuals. There is a growing need for mental health support in the greater community. What’s your favourite place to spend your time in the shire? This is a very tricky question as there are way too many answers to this being blessed – to live in the Macedon Ranges I am spoilt for choice. Anywhere on an autumn afternoon or spring morning, everything breathes life and the surrounding colours are vibrant and energetic. What would people be surprised to know about you? I’m not as shy as I may first seem. I’ll leave it at that, as other responses are just too embarrassing. What is the best thing about the Macedon Ranges? The local community make the Macedon Ranges a truly amazing place to live. I am so thankful to be surrounded by such lovely warm and generous people every day.

Whether it’s easy-upkeep living or a shrewd investment you’re after, this double-storey townhouse may be just the ticket. It has one downstairs bedroom (with wardrobe) next door to a laundry with enclosed toilet. Two bedrooms upstairs (each with built-in wardrobe) include the main with en suite; they share space with a landing and the main bathroom. The spacious living hub incorporates the kitchen which has chocolate cabinetry, a breakfast bench for three, a tiled splashback, underbench oven, gas cooktop and dishwasher. Ducted heating and a split-system ensure temperature control, and there’s a security intercom system. A courtyard and a double garage with additional storage space are included. The property, within a short stroll of the village centre, is tenanted until December, 2017.
It’s all about the majestic Mt Macedon views and treed sanctuary feel at this place … the ambience is soaked up from an appealing house with wraparound verandah and interior spaces that celebrate comfort. The two bedrooms adjoin on the southern side. Each room is fitted with a wardrobe; one has verandah access and both share a bathroom with laundry next door. The light-filled living hub has floorboards and incorporates a sleek, new kitchen with loads of glossy white cabinetry, soft-grey glass splashback, stone benches, dual-drawer dishwasher and St George 900mm cooker. Other drawcards include a modern gas heater, split-system, water tank and 9 x 2.6-metre garage/shed with concrete floor and power. The block of about 1565 square metres has a vegie patch and wonderful gardens that attract abundant birdlife.

This classic homestead has been treated to new carpets, window furnishings and paintwork so it’s ready for new owners to move in, and relax – especially on the front or back verandahs where they can soak up the peace of this big garden block of about 1960 square metres. There are four bedrooms, the main with walk-in wardrobe and en suite. A carpeted lounge room has a wood heater inset under a period-style mantelpiece; and a family-meals zone is next to a kitchen with good storage and gas cooker. A split-system, pay TV and broadband access are included. The secure, lawned backyard has established trees and an as-new Colorbond double garage.
This is one of those great units that present well, is easy on upkeep and sits in a small, quiet complex. It’s a tempting starter for a young couple or downsizers, but it’s also a ready-made investment, with great tenants leasing until July 26 this year. Of the three grey-carpeted fitted bedrooms, the main has a slider to a concreted side patio, as well as a crisp en suite. The toilet is separate to the main bathroom. A grey-tiled family-meals zone accesses the patio and incorporates the kitchen, which has good storage and bench space, plus stainless-steel dishwasher and cooking appliances. Gas ducted heating and a split-system cover all climate control bases. A remote-controlled drive-through garage with internal access, plus an allocated parking spot, are welcome security inclusions. The easily managed block is about 310 square metres.

This delightful tribute to the Federation style is a real heart-winner that cleverly merges heritage and contemporary detail without detracting from either. It’s the kind of place with genuine family appeal, one that will also tempt quality-seeking retirees who value timeless excellence and outdoor spaces replete with stylish plantings. On a corner block of about 1000 square metres, the house is in a fantastic secluded spot bordering a leafy reserve with a bike track, within a few minutes’ stroll of the train station, primary school and Baringo Food & Wine Co. to the left of which is a carpeted lounge room, the one area where period styling is absolutely to the fore. It has cherry-hued wall paint, painted ceiling rosette, deep skirts and cornices, brass light switches, beautifully dressed sash windows and an ornate cast-iron and brass gas log fire with heritage surround. The vast, tiled living hub is a cracker of a space, with french doors to verandah and gardens one side, and bifolds on the other opening right up to a high-gabled pergola flanked by pebbled courtyard and verdant lawn and gardens. Suiting the house’s ambience perfectly,
the kitchen has storage galore, a charcoal granite-topped island bench under a French-colonial pendant, walk-in pantry and all mod-cons, including an Ilve 900mm cooker inset under a mantelpiece in the provincial style. The big laundry has a stack of cupboards. The main bedroom, off the entry hall, has a leadlight porthole (there are leadlight windows throughout), a box bay window, walk-in fitted wardrobe and an en suite with tessellated floor tiles, period wall sconces, subway tiling and walk-in shower. Polished timber stairs rise to a fitted study under an angled ceiling with plantation-shuttered roof skylight, a next-door living room under a vaulted ceiling with a trio of skylights, and a similarly appointed, fitted bedroom with split-system. Massive in-roof storage is also up here. The leafy, private backyard includes vegie boxes, water tank and a freestanding double garage; side gates allow caravan access. Carole Levy

AUCTION: 8 APRIL 2017 - 2.30PM
• Superb block in well established area • At the head of a quiet court • Well established homes surrounding block • Auction: 8 April 2017 - 2.30pm • For any enquiries call Chess Property Consultants 5429 5544
“COMMON CONDITIONS” Last week I spoke about the traps for unwary buyers. Today, let’s look at the most common conditions to be found on a Contract of Sale and the impact they have on both the buyer and the seller. seller There are three very common conditions, all of which are quite acceptable and must take place in a very short space of time. 1. “A Condition of Finance” - in this situation, a buyer is given 14-21 days to obtain bank finance to complete the purchase of a property. A bank valuation will take place and provided the price of the property is in line with the valuation, finance will be approved.
Here is a large block in a most desirable location. Level, surrounded by established, much loved homes and at the head of a quiet court – this is a rare find indeed.
2. “A Building Inspection” - a purchaser will be allowed 7 days from the signing of the contract to obtain a building inspection. An inspection is carried out at the purchaser’s expense and would usually take about an hour to complete. The Agent selling the property should be in attendance.
All town services are available including town gas, town water, sewage, internet, phone and a manmade road frontage.
3. “A Pest Inspection” - a pest inspection is carried out at the purchaser’s expense and will be looking for termites or white ants - definitely something that no one wants to find!
Make your dream a reality. • All town services are available • Town gas, town water, sewage & internet • Phone and a man-made road frontage
102 Main Street, Romsey 3434 PH: 5429 5544
OPEN 7 DAYS
As I said, these are the most usual and acceptable conditions to be found in a contract. Please remember that your Agent must not and cannot give legal advice so it is wise to have your solicitor / conveyancer check the contract and the conditions before signing. Remember, Remember if “in doubt - don’t”. An unconditional contract is “gold” and everyone is happy, but conditions are normal and will have a date by which they must be fulfilled, so a little patience is needed. If the conditions are not met, the contract will come to an end. • Column supplied by Liz Dormontt. Liz is a director of Chess Property Consultants, based in Romsey. FOOD REVIEW
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir delights in a Thai arrival to Footscray … Footscray central … so much wonderful food, so many lovely people. Apart from the central themes of Vietnamese and Ethiopian tucker, I can think of at least half a dozen other food varieties without even trying … but, Thai? Aside from a brief appearance in Hopkins Street several years, Thai food has never been part of the Footscray landscape, the nearest restaurants being in West Footscray, Seddon and Kensington. With the arrival of Issan Thai Street Food, the ballgame changes, adding another strand to inner Footscray’s diversity. I think Noi and hubby Vince are being very smart indeed. After my solo visit for reconnaissance purposes, a happy group of seven CTS pals hits Issan and has a swell time. We find the service fine and the wait times appropriate for the food we order. The sharing platter, som tum tard ($18.90), is a doozy – a big mound of excellent spicy green papaya salad surrounded by pork crackling, chicken wings, wet-smooth noodles, bean sprouts and chargrilled diced beef. Even the hardboiled egg halves are superbly done, with the yolks gooey, not runny. Our order of satay tofu ($6.90), fuelled by the intense curiosity of three of our group, doesn’t impress greatly – I think we’ve been expecting tofu a little more crusty and crunchy. This is OK and the peanutty sauce is good. The pork skewers of moo ping ($10.90) are outstanding. The meat is perfectly cooked,
ISSAN THAI STREET FOOD Address: 10 Droop Street, Footscray Phone: 9689 9404 packed with chargrill flavour and served with a zingy tamarind-based sauce. Our serve of Penang curry with beef ($15.90) is of modest proportions, but all good. Its deeply rich flavoursome sauce/gravy is the hit, with some of us mopping it up with rice long after the curry’s main protagonists have gone and other dishes have arrived at our table. Pad thai with chicken ($13.90) is a fine version of this popular noodle dish. The chicken salad of larb gai ($13.90) really impresses with its freshness and tang. Likewise with the equally sexy moo narm tok ($13.90) – sliced grilled pork with lemon juice, herbs, chilli and toasted ground rice … fatty, chargrilled gloriousness! At Issan, you won’t find much exotica, offal or many regional specialties. But our general consensus is that Issan fare is a considerable cut above what is generally found in your typical suburban Thai restaurant. We double order several dishes – the moo ping, the larb gai and the moo narm tok – and eat substantially and satisfyingly well. The bill for seven is just under $20 each. 29 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 14, 2017
SPORT Jets want maximum grunt as Big V season starts Sunbury Jets are primed to get out on court in the Big V women’s state championship division. The Jets are playing in the top division for the first time, and have put together a squad combining returning players and new recruits. Jets’ coach Kennedy Kereama said they are keen to step onto court for their first game this weekend. “We’re pretty happy with where we are at,” he said. “There’s a nice balance of retention and recruitment. Retention was important in keeping some key players. “We kept our core leaders in Monique [Stevens], Chelsea [Burns] and Courtney [Duever], and we looked to bring in a couple of other leaders.
“We’re looking forward to get under way.” Alex Darby, Kayla Theodore and Genevieve McCorkell, who all played key roles last season, are returning to the Jets. They’re joined by New Zealand foursome Shea Crotty, Jessica Slade, Rebecca Van Kuyk and Josie Stockill, and Ireland’s captain Orla O’Rielly. Rebecca Marshall has been promoted from the Jets’ youth league side, while Bethany Theodore returns to the Jets before heading to college later in the year. Sharon Plichta has moved into an assistant coach role, and Kereama hasn’t ruled out her return to the court later in the season. Kereama said the key for all inclusions is to ensure they play the role needed by the team.
“Orla and Josie bring a bit more experience,” he said. “Both have played internationally, at college, and represented their countries. “We’ve brought in players who fit our model and our program, offensively and defensively. “They’ll all find a role in the team. “Some will have more of a role than others.” Kereama said the playing group would again decide the expectations the side would set itself this season. He said players are realistic that they won’t have a season like they did last year. The Jets had one of the most dominant seasons in Big V history, going through 2016 undefeated, with an average winning margin
of more than 20 points a game, on the way to their first women’s title in the 21 years of the program. “It’s unrealistic to think we’ll have that season again,” Kereama said. “It’s not a marathon. “We’ll build and get better at the season goes on. Everyone wants to win championships,” he said. “The program we want to build and promote is one where there’s opportunities for locals to show potential and earn a spot.” The Jets start the season on Saturday night against Southern Peninsula, and follow it up at home on Sunday against McKinnon. Tara Murray
Grand plan for Sunbury By Tara Murray Sunbury produced one of the performances of the season with the ball and in the field to stun Riddell and seal a grand final berth. Having won eight straight matches in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup, the Bombers were red-hot favourites to beat an out-of-sorts Sunbury. Sunbury entered the match with just two wins in the past seven rounds. The Bombers won the toss on their home ground and elected to bat. They got off to a shaky start when star batsman Mick Allen was out for four. Brendan Alger and Haydn Ross put on 23 runs for the second wicket, but that would be the biggest partnership of the innings. Sunbury’s Heath Boffey, Jason McGann and Stephen Treweek started to wreak havoc. The Bombers were bowled out for 86, and their bottom five batsmen scored just nine runs. Cameron Moran top-scored on 26. Sunbury’s playing coach Justin Nelson said it was a performance they knew they could produce. “We just fielded terrific and we had two direct runouts and the boys bowled really well,” he said. “We haven’t quite got the batting there. We’re doing two of the three things well and if we can put it all together next week, we’re a chance.” The batting again proved to be a challenge and Sunbury was 5-55 at stumps on day one. Nelson and McGann were the not-out batsmen. Sunbury battled hard on Sunday, but got the runs for first innings points, eight wickets down. It’s innings finished not long afterwards, bowled out for 94. Max Scott top-scored with 33, and Matthew Livingstone was the best of the bowlers for the Bombers with 5-20. The Bombers were keen to try and get a reverse outright result. They belted the ball around the park and a couple of times on to roof tops as they made 3-151 off 15 overs declaring at tea. Allen made 68 which included three fours and six sixes. For Sunbury the runs didn’t matter in the second innings, it was about batting out the rest of day. The experienced trio of Nelson, McGann and Paul Webber kept that goal on track and Sunbury finished on 6-73 for the win. There was a sense of relief for Nelson and his teammates. “It’s amazing we keep finding a way to get over the line,” Nelson said. “We’re not playing brilliant cricket but we’re in a grand final.” The only downside for Sunbury was a hamstring injury to Scott, who didn’t field for most of the second innings and needed a runner to bat a second time. Sunbury will face Gisborne in the grand final.
Oliver Clough was among Macedon’s best with both the bat and ball. (Damian Visentini)
Wallan through in grand style Wallan won through to the Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s B-grade grand final in empathic fashion. The minor premier needed just over 60 overs to get the result against Macedon and seal a home grand final in the process. Macedon was left to rue its decision to bat first. Not one of the top seven batsmen reached double figures as Macedon was in trouble at 7-40. Daniel Trotta and Oliver Clough provided some resistance, but once Trotta was out it was the beginning of the end. Macedon lost its last three wickets for one run to be bowled out for 69. Clough, batting at nine, finished 21 not out as one of only two batsmen to reach double figures. Scott Gilchrist was the pick of the Magpie bowlers with four wickets. Macedon needed early wickets if it was any chance. But while the Magpies were at one stage 2-21, they were never in trouble of not making the necessary runs, doing so with seven wickets in hand. They were 3-141 when the two teams decided to end the game with another day’s play scheduled. Matthew Robertson made an unbeaten 79 for the Magpies with Clough taking two wickets for Macedon. The Magpies will play Lancefield in the grand final. They will be looking for their third title of the season, having won the GDCA district T20 title and the Cricket Willow division 2 T20 title. A premiership would mean the Magpies would return to McIntyre Cup after two seasons in B grade. Tara Murray Stephen Treweek on his way to a couple of handy wickets.

Cannons primed for blast off By Tara Murray As the finishing touches are put in place by TAC Cup sides ahead of this season’s debut, there’s double the excitement at Calder Cannons. AFL Victoria recently announced the launch of a new girls’ TAC Cup competition, with all clubs now fielding boys and girls sides. While the Cannons fielded a side in the AFL youth girls academy competition last year, it’s a completely different ball game now. Assistant coach Jason Peak, who has a long involvement in youth girls football, said he hadn’t seen anything like this before. Collingwood vice-captain Alicia Eva will coach the Cannons’ team. “It’s very significant, the facilities and the plan in place for girls,” Peak said. “I don’t think any girl that has just been playing local footy would have experienced that before. From the start of our program to now, we’ve experienced improvement in so many of them – it’s fantastic.”
The new TAC Cup competition and the launch of the AFLW has attracted many girls to footy, in many cases a return to the sport. Whittlesea’s Chloe Molloy is a talented basketballer, who has played in the WNBL and represented Victoria on several occasions. She jumped at the opportunity to return to football. “I put the footy down at the age of 12 or 13, as the pathway to football hadn’t developed for women or girls then,” she said. “I moved to basketball, [but] with the TAC Cup coming in and the AFLW, it kind of sparked something in me to get the footy back in my hand. “Coming into this Cannons’ program with the opportunity to be part of the academy, and also be part of the first TAC Cup, is pretty amazing for me.” Molloy said it hadn’t all been smooth sailing though, a ball to the face in her first training session was a quick and timely reminder about the differences between basketball and footy. She said juggling the two sports has been hard. “I knew I could still kick … I wasn’t sure how
Chloe Molloy and Cannons’ assistant coach Jason Peak. (Tara Murray)
my skills or knowledge would fit in with those girls who have been part of the academy for so long,” she said. “It is difficult and it kind of gets to the stage where you can be good at two sports, but if you want to be great at one, you’ve
Dragons nail decider spot in final over
Sunbury bows out of flag race Sunbury’s dream run in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1 has ended in the opening round of the finals. In its first season back in division 1, Sunbury surprised many sides, including itself, on the way to a finals berth, sneaking into fourth spot. With nothing to lose, Sunbury threw everything it had at minor premier Fitzroy Victoria on Saturday in its bid for a shock grand final berth. Sunbury led for much of the day, but wasn’t able to hold on, eventually losing 76-73. Brad Willoughby led the only winning rink for Sunbury, smashing its opposition 30-9. Mark Cowan’s rink lost 28-12 after dropping 15 shots in the last five ends, while Brad Janner’s rink lost 21-15 and Carla Krizanic’s rink went down 18-16. Sunbury’s David Glennon said that while making finals was a bonus in light of pre-season expectations, to have gone so close to making the grand final and not get there was disappointing. “It was a very tight game and we were in front for most of the day,” he said. “It was a fantastic game on their green and it was only the last little bit they came over the top. It is a game that got away, but we would have taken just making finals at the start of the year.” Glennon said they were hoping this year’s results would be a stepping stone for next year. “Hopefully, we can get a few more recruits on board and make the team a bit stronger,” he said. “This year we brought in the three Longs [Wayne, Mikayla and Paul] and they’re all in the top side, and Shane Trewarne also came in, and they’ve all settled in.” Fitzroy Victoria will play Deer Park in the grand final. Deer Park also had a three shot semi-final victory, defeating Moonee Valley 75-72. Meanwhile, Sunbury (3) was beaten in a division 4 grand final by Werribee (4). Sunbury (5) lost a divison 7 grand final to Aberfeldie (4). Sunbury’s second and sixth teams were both knocked out in their semi-finals on Saturday. The two Sunbury sides through to grand finals will be promoted next season, meaning the club will have teams in divisions 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and 7.
Gisborne timed its run chase to perfection against Bacchus Marsh to earn a second straight Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup grand final appearance. Like the last time the two teams met, the match went down to the wire. This time the result went the Dragons’ way with Clinton Young hitting the runs off the first ball of the last over of the day. The weekend started with the Bulls winning the toss and electing to bat at home. They didn’t get off to the best start, with Peter Lalor out for three and Alex Porter with a second-ball duck. Jay King was doing the damage with the ball early on taking the first four wickets. When Clinton Young got his first wicket, opener Mili Sepala was gone for 35 and the Bulls were 5-74. The middle and lower order mustered some resistance, with Kieran Atkin (35), Shaun Taylor (50) and James Bailey (33no) adding some handy runs to push the score past 200. The Bulls were bowled out for 215 with three and a half overs left. King, who also wrapped up the tail, finished with 6-64 off 22.3, including seven maidens. The Dragons’ openers got off to a steady but slow start, putting on 64 for the first partnership. Dragons playing-coach Simon Harman was out for 36 and Brook Grumont lasted just two balls before being caught and bowled by Dennis O’Loughlin. Beau Valka and Riley Vernon added 42 runs for the fourth partnership, before Valka was dismissed, soon followed by Jakson Knight (0) and Vernon (66). The Dragons at that point were 5-114. After Jason Wilson and skipper Jarryd Vernon steadied the ship, the Dragons needed 39 runs off the last 10 overs with five wickets in hand. The total was in sight when Wilson was bowled by Madushanka Ekanayaka for 40, giving the Bulls same hope. Jarryd Vernon fell for 40 with the scores level, leaving the job of hitting the winning runs to Young and Darcy Nolan. Young obliged by hitting a two of the first ball of the final over. The Dragons finished 8-217. Their win sets up a grand final clash with Sunbury, which shocked premiership favourite Riddell. The Dragons will be chasing a second straight McIntyre Cup premiership since returning to the top grade at the start of last season. Tara Murray
got to … drop one, even though you might love it. So, for me, I’m going through the stage ‘footy is back’ … I’m loving it and it makes me happy and that’s what I want to do.” The Cannons kick off the season on Sunday against Gippsland Power in Frankston. The following week, they’ll play a double header before the boys team. Peak said Molloy would be one of the players to watch this season. Molloy has played all over the field during pre-season matches. He said stars Monique Conti and Madison Prespakis, who are both part of the NAB AFL Women’s National Academy, would be another two key players. He also said to keep an eye on Georgia Patrikios and Felicity Theodore. “It’s been a long preparation,” he said. “We started before Christmas and had a few sessions … down at the Essendon Football Club. “We’ve had four practice matches since then,” he said. “The girls are well and truly raring to go and play the real thing.”

Gisborne’s division 1 premiership in the Central Highlands Bowls Division wasn’t just for those who played on Saturday – it was also for everyone who has played for the club. After making the division 1 grand final for the first time last season, Gisborne had a steely determination all year to go one better and win its first division 1 premiership. Facing Lancefield on Saturday in the grand final, undefeated Gisborne was always going to be tested by the side that had pushed it the hardest all year. Two rink wins, including an 11-shot win to Graham Quaife’s rink, was enough for Gisborne to seal a 97-85 shot victory. Matthew Bacon skippered Gisborne’s other winning rink in a 25-19 win against Jeff Holmes. The teams of Glenn Johnston jnr and Peter Linehan couldn’t be split in the
third rink, with the sides finishing 22 apiece. Michael Linehan claimed the only rink win for Lancefield, defeating Darren Fletcher 27-22. The flag win capped off an almost perfect season for Gisborne’s top team. The only thing that prevented a clean sweep was rain, which meant the clash between Gisborne and Lancefield earlier in the season was called off midway through the day and declared a draw. Gisborne’s Glenn Johnston jnr said that this year everything went their way in the grand final. “It was a really hard-fought effort with nothing between us all day,” he said. “A few little things went our way towards the end. We were 12, 15 shots up late and it was nice to have that little bit of breathing room.” Johnston said the players had learnt from the experience of 12 months earlier and had put in

Lancefield has already exceeded pre-season expectations, so a Gisborne and District Cricket Association B-grade premiership would be icing on the cake. In only their second season ever in B grade, the Tigers are a win away from claiming the premiership and securing a spot in the McIntyre Cup after a semi-final win at the weekend. Tigers coach Luke Barker remains shocked at the development that has come from the side in recent years. “Three seasons ago we were playing in D grade and now we’re a chance to be playing in McIntyre Cup,” he said. “What these kids have done over the last few seasons is amazing. As a coach, it’s very pleasing. “Before last season, only two members of the team had played B grade or higher. Six years ago most of these players were playing E grade. “There’s only two players who aren’t locals and come through the system. “We’re pinching ourselves.” The Tigers earned a shot at the premiership by knocking off the most experienced side in B grade, Sunbury United, in their semi-final at Lancefield. United, which has won several McIntyre Cup premierships in recent years, was hoping to head straight back up to the top grade. United batted first and looked in control at 3-173. But as has been the case many times this season, the Tigers dug in. “We probably thought 200 was on par and would have been a decent score,” Barker said. “They lost the last seven wickets for 22 runs. The boys stuck at it and luck went our way.” Nathan Malone turned it on with the ball, taking seven wickets as United was bowled out for 195. Brett McDorman top-scored for United with 92. The Tigers needed something special for the chase and it was Luke Malone who stepped up. Barker said he had been telling Malone for weeks that a big score was around the corner and so was glad he came when it really counted. “It was a special innings,” he said. “Nathan made 33 as well. Nathan has gone to another level. It’s a real credit to both of them and what they’ve done this weekend is really special to them and their family and friends.” Lancefield finished 7-199, with Malone making 96 not out. Damien Edwards was the pick of the United bowlers, taking two wickets. The Tigers will face Wallan in the grand final after the Magpies easily accounted for Macedon. Barker said they were confident of being able to take it up to the minor premier. “We made 260 against them in the final round and they chased it down,” he said. “We didn’t have Matt Bowden bowl … he’s won the B-grade bowling average. “It’s finals and anything can happen.”
place a few things that had worked. He said it was a monkey-off-the-back scenario, with the club in recent times having had six teams fall at the last hurdle. He said it had been special to have so many past and present players travel to Kyneton for the grand final and back at the club later on. “We had 50 to 60 supporters watching us,” he said. “We’ve had a few players around the club for a long time. Graham Quaife, who was the standout yesterday, has been at the club for 30 years and played in a lot of bad Gisborne teams.” Gisborne joins Bacchus Marsh and Lancefield, which won the division 2 and division 3 title, as the CHBD Saturday pennant premiers this season. East Sunbury Cricket Club has announced on its Facebook page that senior coach Jessy Carroll is in remission from cancer. East Sunbury and the greater sports community has rallied around Carroll, who has been battling stage four non-Hodgkin’s B-cell lymphoma since October, 2015. Earlier this year, Carroll was given four weeks to live and was trying a trial drug in a bid stop the cancer from spreading. The Sunbury community helped raise money to help fund the medication, which Carroll will have to take for at least two years.
Football
An AFL Goldfields thirds football competition will run this season. The region’s governing body sought feedback from local clubs about whether they would like to field third open age men’s sides, with five clubs expressing interest. Bacchus Marsh, Diggers Rest, Melton South, Sunbury Lions and Sunbury Kangaroos will field sides in the new competition.
Soccer
Sunbury United has pulled off an upset win in the third round of the FFA Cup. United conceded a goal in the first 90 seconds of the match against Sydenham Park and left it until the very end to equalise. Lee Mois scored the equaliser in the 95th minutes. Jayden Mercieca gave United the lead in extra time, but Sydenham Park levelled the scores to send the match to penalties. United keeper Akim Abdul stood up when it was needed most, saving three and scoring one himself as United won 9-8 on penalties.
EDFL
The Essendon District Football League has raised the age limit of its under-19 competition for this season. The league announced last week the new age limit will be under-19.5 to help sides struggling for numbers. The EDFL had this season changed its junior ages group from even number to odd numbers, which means players that would normally push up into under-19s would still be eligible to play in the younger age group. At this stage, it is thought the competition will return to under-19s next season. RON’S VERDICT
etting back to where you belong – whether it’s heading home from a winter break, or heading out on workaday duties – feels pretty good in a Tucson. There’s a sense that you’re in safe hands within its sturdy body, with plenty of power, yet you feel comfortably in control, thanks to its responsive steering and clear, accessible driving instruments. The safety aspect goes up a notch with automatic emergency braking and rear-traffic alert, which warns you if a car or pedestrian is approaching as you back out of a driveway or parking spot. Safe, roomy and comfy, it is clearly all about the family, with big doors and boot space to fit kids and all their stuff. Despite a nice line in leather, which also elevates the price, the interior is somewhat uninspired. All the design effort has gone into the eye-catching exterior of curves flowing around elongated window and headlight shapes, with a handsome grille and subtle chrome underscoring.

ike Hyundai itself, the Tucson is all grown up. Called ix35 in the previous generation, the latest medium SUV from the South Korean car-maker has shed its adolescent awkwardness and knuckled down. Hyundai started by stretching the new Tucson in most dimensions to turn it into a true medium SUV, thus allowing roomy five-seat accommodation and handy 488-litre luggage space. The stylish new look came courtesy of its European designers, while Australian engineers tweaked the suspension and steering for a supple ride and reassuring control. Now armed with a choice of three four-cylinder engines and four specification levels, the Tucson spans a wide range. Our test vehicle was the flagship Czech-built all-wheel-drive Highlander – yes, most Tucson variants are now built there – powered by Hyundai’s renowned 2.0-litre diesel packing 136kW of power (more than most of its rivals) hooked up to a six-speed auto for sparkling acceleration.
