Ranges water ways get a tweak

The switch follows a recent dry period which has resulted in water levels at Rosslynne Reservoir in Gisborne falling below 20 per cent capacity.

Mount Macedon had been receiving water from Rosslynne Reservoir since November last year.

All water for these towns will now come from the Melbourne water supply system.

Lancefield, Woodend and Romsey residents had been receiving their water from the

reservoir since early this year. Their water will now be supplied with a blend of water from local sources and the Melbourne water supply.

Western Water manager Graham Holt said the water supply changes were crucial to uphold the standard of Rosslynne Reservoir for the future.

“To preserve Rosslynne’s water levels and ensure future water supply, we are switching most towns in the Macedon Ranges over to the Melbourne drinking water supply system,” he said.

“Lancefield, Romsey and Woodend will continue to receive water from local supplies, but will be supplemented by water from the greater Melbourne water supply system.

“It’s normal to notice a slight change in taste when your water supply is changed, as water … varies.

“All the drinking water we supply is safe, healthy to drink and meets the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.”

Boom gates are back A final twist has been added to the Melton Highway level crossing removal.

Kyneton sculptor Jason Waterhouse has recreated the original boom gates in a sculpture installed under the new rail bridge.

The art piece, entitled Levelled Crossing Crossing, reuses the boom gates removed from the former Melton Highway level crossing, and ties them together in a knot.

Waterhouse said he wanted the boom gates to remain true to their function. “My practice deals with re-imagining real objects,” he said.

“And I thought, isn’t it hilarious that all this work goes into removing these boom gates.

“I was interested in the ironic idea of putting back the boom gates to the site after all the effort … which is what I’ve done.

“I just thought of the function of the boom gate – the opening and letting people through.”

Waterhouse’s concept was chosen by Melton Highway Level Crossing Removal Project members, Brimbank council, Creative Victoria and the Office of the Victorian Government Architect.

The sculptor installed the artwork in December last year under the eastern side of the six-lane bridge.

“The work provides viewers and commuters with a fun, engaging and slightly surreal experience as they pass through the space and encounter the sculpture,” Waterhouse said.

“Levelled Levelled Crossing is a playful take on the rail and road intersection history of the site and its recent urban development.”

Community groups and organisations across Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges are delighted with their grants success.

Hume Men’s Shed Sunbury was among the big winners – it received a $1320 grant.

Shed president Mike Newman said the money was very welcoming.

“Getting these grants really helps,” he said. “We’ll be able to send five or six members out to first aid courses.

“We’re a not-for-profit organisation – we basically rely on shed members’ annual dues, plus things like Bunnings sausage sizzle.

“It’s the little things like that, they all add up.”

Citizen’s Advocacy Sunbury and District, Macedon Ranges Further Education Centre and the Macedon Ranges Netball Association also received money under the Volunteer Grants program.

Citizen’s Advocacy’s $5000 will go towards online and video training and mentoring programs.

The Macedon Ranges Further Education Centre received $4750 to help with training and upskilling attendees.

Federal McEwen MP Rob Mitchell said: “The training will allow tutors to support students with individual learning needs on a one-on-one basis, which is such a help to those who need that little bit of a personal support with their learning goals.”

The netball association received $4000 to upgrade IT equipment and to replace a broken gazebo.

Fire restrictions

The fire danger period remains in force in the Macedon Ranges. Anyone who burns off in the area without a permit risks being fined. Due to prolonged dry conditions and predicted low autumn rainfall, the CFA has decided to keep restrictions in place for the shire. The reminder comes after several Macedon Ranges CFA brigades recently reported call-outs to illegal burn-offs across the region.

Rev up your engines for the eighth annual Kruze 4 Kidz event.

Kruze 4 Kidz is a car show and family day held annually on Good Friday to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

Event founder Brad Radclyffe said the event was his way of supporting the hospital appeal in a fun and inclusive way for families.

“On the day, we will have a wide range of vehicles,” he said. “We’ve got trucks, motorbikes and cars. We should have over 1000 vehicles on display.

“If we achieve that, we will be one of Melbourne’s biggest charity motor shows.”

The hospital and the appeal hold a special place in Mr Radclyffe’s heart – he spent time

in the Royal Children’s Hospital as a child. He said he hoped the money raised from the event would benefit the children at the hospital.

“What it’s about is trying to make life better for the kids in the hospital, try and give them the best medical equipment and research [and] try and give them a more comfortable life,” he said.

Kruze 4 Kidz has raised $66,370 for the Good Friday Appeal since it began eight years ago.

Mr Radclyffe said he aimed to raise $20,000 at this year’s event on April 19.

There will be kids entertainment, live music, auctions and raffles from 10am-4pm at Langama Park, Sunbury.

Softball stars a big hit

By Jessica Micallef Two Sunbury softballers have hit the biggest home runs of their young careers.

Taliah Kelly and Matthew Bedwell have won the 2018 Victorian schools Sporting Blue Awards for their softball achievements.

The Sunbury Softball Association players said they were both proud and excited to have won the prestigious awards.

Previous winners of the awards include AFL player Patrick Dangerfield and AFLW player Louise Stephenson.

The new and improved Malmsbury Cricket Club is showing off its shiny new upgrades.

The $150,000 upgrade of the cricket ground and new facilities has delighted club secretary Gary Nicholls.

“We’ve got a brand new white fence all the way around the perimeter of the oval,” he said. “It looks very much like those English county grounds with the white picket fences.

“We have three brand new cricket practice nets and we’ve had an upgrade to the pavilion. It looks bloody marvellous.”

Mr Nicholls said the club was hoping the upgrades would help it attract more players.

The club provided $20,000 towards the upgrade, Macedon Ranges council contributed $30,000 and the state government $100,000.

Taliah said she was hoping to take her love of softball to the United States and to one day play in the Olympics.

“When I’m older, I want to get a scholarship into college ball and hopefully play there [the US] … it depends where my life goes,” she said.

Matthew and Taliah said they enjoyed playing a sport with a lower profile than most and meeting new people.

“It was something I was brought up with,” Matthew said. “It’s a bit of a unique sport as well, not everyone plays it like footy.”

Taliah said: “The amount of friendships that you make during the sport is incredible.”

Their mums, Catherine Kelly and Kathy Bedwell, said their children were worthy recipients of the awards.

“I’m super proud of both of them,” Ms Bedwell said. “To have both winners come from Sunbury … we are the smallest association

in the state, so they’ve both done really well and they both [have] put in a lot of effort so they deserve it. They’ve worked really hard for this.”

“They’ve both done well representing our association as well and they’ve both represented their state.”

Anzac Day’s young face

By Jessica Micallef Sunbury’s young people will participate in a new Anzac Day vigil this year.

The Sunbury Anzac Youth Vigil will allow the town’s young people to pay their respects to Australians who have died in war.

Sunbury RSL secretary Harry Beckwith and vigil committee member Jarrod Bell are spearheading the organistion of the event.

Mr Beckwith said they wanted young people to become more engaged with Anzac Day in Sunbury.

“I’ve been involved with youths through Scouting and we were looking at extending the youth aspect of the RSL and the services,” he said. “We’ve been discussing this for 12 to 18 months and we said: ‘Why don’t we do an all night vigil?’

“We’re hoping that this is the first of an ongoing activity.”

Mr Beckwith said the vigil would be a way for young people to understand the various aspects of what the defence force members go through.

People aged under 25, who belong to a uniformed community and service organisation, will participate in a Holding Ground ceremony and will keep continuous watch over the Sunbury War Memorial Cenotaph in the evening before and morning of Anzac Day. Mr Bell said the event was a great chance for the younger generation to understand the meaning of Anzac Day.

Early years awards call Sunbury residents are being encouraged to nominate an outstanding early childhood teacher or organisation for a Victorian Early Years Award.

Now in their 14th year, the Victorian Early Years Awards recognise the crucial work early childhood professionals do in improving the lives of young children.

Sunbury MP Josh Bull urged families, early childhood professionals and early years support organisations to nominate themselves or others who are dedicated to helping young children learn.

“Sunbury is home to many passionate and caring early childhood teachers and educators and exceptional early services,” he said.

“The Victorian Early Years Awards are a well-deserved opportunity to celebrate the people, organisations and services that help Victorian children to get the best start in life.”

Award winners in each category will receive up to $15,000 to continue to work in kindergartens, schools, councils, maternal child and health services and other early years organisations.

Nominations close at midnight on Friday, May 24.

Trek to save lives John Bowling and Stewart Smillie are doing their bit for the women in their life.

They recently took on the Overland Track at Cradle Mountain in Tasmania, raising more than $16,000 for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation.

They were driven to help by the death of Mr Bowling’s wife, Sue, in 2017 after a two and a half year battle with ovarian cancer.

“We’re just trying to get more public awareness,” Mr Bowling said.

“There was no history in the family of ovarian cancer on Sue’s side or my side. It just means that it can rear its ugly head … anybody can get it.”

The Gisborne residents tackled the six-day trek because they wanted to help prevent other families having similar experiences.

“I’ve got two daughter-in-laws and I’ve got two granddaughters and I’ve got a wife,” Mr Smillie said.

“We don’t have any way of helping them to identify it early … there’s something missing.

“Ovarian cancer deserves to be recognised, it deserves a slice of research dollars to try and find that early detection test.

“We don’t want what happened to John’s family to happen to another family.”

MY PLACE Christian Bagin is no stranger to the stage. The Riddells Creek resident chats with Jessica Micallef about performing in the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and his love for his hometown.

I’ve lived in Riddells Creek for 15 years. Before that, we lived all over the city. My partner’s parents – they’d been living in the Macedon Ranges for 15 years before that. That’s what drew us up here, the visits on the weekends, we loved the area.

What are you passionate about?

Theatre and gardening. We have a few acres. I do the landscaping [and] planting.

You’re performing in the shows Macdeth and Stark and Dormy during the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Tell me about the shows.

Macdeth – It’s a one hour fun version of Macbeth the Shakespeare play. We knock it out in an hour and it’s just silly. It’s a fun, ridiculous silly interpretation of it. I play Macbeth and a witch. We do lots of different roles. When you aren’t a character, you’re playing music, you aren’t constantly on stage.

Stark and Dormy – It’s a puppet show and it’s a tale between father and daughter who run a

park and it’s a relationship and things go fun with alien invasions. Both shows are family shows.

What show is your favourite to perform in?

I can’t say. I love them both for different reasons.

What would people be most surprised to know about you?

I’m Hungarian.

What do you like best about the Macedon Ranges?

It’s still got the community vibe. You go to the shops and you run in to people you know. It’s great. A five minute drive from my house and I’m walking in the forest, I just love that. We’ve got this beautiful environment.

SPORT Lions pay the price after missing early opportunities A wasteful Sunbury Lions were made to pay in the opening round of the Ballarat Football League against Darley.

While the Devils finished the stronger of the two teams, with six goals to two in the final term, the Lions missed early opportunities to take control on the scoreboard.

It proved costly, with the Devils winning 13.13 (91)-7.13 (55).

Lions’ coach Travis Hodgson said they didn’t make the most of the opportunities early in the game when they had them.

“We had control for the first quarter,” he said.

“We started really well, but failed to capitalise and put on the scoreboard pressure.

“We were wasteful in front of goal, we kicked seven out of bounds on the full and six of them were from set shots.

“Darley then came over the top of us.”

Hodgson said they always knew that Darley would come back at them late in the game.

home, especially late in games.

“They really know how to utilise that ground and run to the right spaces.

“There’s no excuses. Darley would probably say we had control early on and nothing to show for it.”

Hodgson said while disappointed with the loss, there was still a lot of positives to come from his first game in charge.

He said the fact they had 27 scoring shots showed they were doing something right against a good side.

Daylan Kempster was the only multiple goalkicker for the Lions, kicking two goals.

Hodgson said the midfield group of Alik Magin, Mitch Conn, Lachie Bramble and Greg Hay controlled the game.

Ruckman Jayden Eales had a dominant game as well. Hodgson said Leigh Brennan, in his first game for the club, provided a good target up forward, but was one of the main culprits in front of goal with poor kicking.

Tigers up for the fight

By Tara Murray Kyneton had a positive start to the Bendigo Football League, despite going down to Golden Square under lights on Saturday night.

The young Tigers side pushed Golden Square for much of the night, but errors proved costly late with Golden Square winning 17.14 (116)-11.7 (73).

Tigers’ coach Luke Beattie saw a lot of positives out of the game.

He said on more than one occasion they came from behind to get back into the game.

“I’m pretty positive about it,” Beattie said.

“We played extremely well. We’re a really young group and we put ourselves into the game in the third quarter.

“We got to within two goals, 10 minutes into the last quarter.

“If we held our composure, we would have been coming right at them.

“They are an experienced group and we provided them with opportunities and they took them.”

Beattie said the difference late was turnovers, which allowed Golden Square to blow out the margin.

He said another positive was the side’s ability to run out the game and provide effort for the whole four quarters, which he said would get rewarded in the coming weeks.

Nathan Thompson, Jacob Plowman and Rhys Magin kicked two goals each.

Skipper Josh Govan was the Tigers’ best leading from the front, with Rhys Smith and Harrison Huntley strong in defence.

Beattie was also impressed with the efforts of Ben Xiriha and Ned O’Sullivan in their first senior games.

A young Tigers side is something that will be a common occurrence for the club this year.

Beattie said being able to have young players coming through the grades was something the club had been focusing on.

“It’s very exciting,” he said. “They will become solid players in the years to come.

“As soon as the opportunity is there for these players to play at this level and not be too far out of their depth, we’re taking it, regardless of the results.”

As well as focusing on youth, a couple of veterans have returned.

Former AFL player and now Tigers under-19 coach Nathan Thompson and Beattie have both pulled on the boots.

Beattie said he had pulled up alright from his first game back.

“There were a lot more nerves than there has been the last couple of years just coaching,” he said.

“I’ve got the unique option to play again. I

took the opportunity to provide feedback and support on the ground and while I can still be an asset to the group.”

The Tigers’ run doesn’t get any easier, facing arch-rival Gisborne on Good Friday.

against Castlemaine.

The Bulldogs controlled the game from start to finish, winning 17.20 (122)-3.11 (29).

Jack Scanlon kicked four goals for the Bulldogs, with Trent Crosbie and Joshua Grabham named their best.

The Lions have this week off due to Easter, before facing Melton South the following week.

Hodgson said the week off would give them more time to review the tape from the game against the Devils and plan for the Panthers.

Hodgson said it’s a must win game as a 0-2 start would be tough.

“You want to win every game, but Darley at Darley is always tough. They’ve won their last nine games at home.

“Home games against Melton South are winnable and the games you have to win if you want to play finals.

“Hopefully we can get the four points in two weeks time.”

In the netball, the Lions got off to a good start with a 66-45 win in the A-grade.

The Lions set the win up with a 20-6 first quarter. Shelby Holter, who stepped up from B-grade, shot 54 goals from 61 attempts.

Sunbury United comes away with ugly win Sunbury United returned to the winners’ list with a much-needed win against Essendon United in FFV state league 3 north-west.

The win, Sunbury’s second of the season, wasn’t the prettiest, but it got the job done in the end to win 1-0.

Sunbury vice-president Greg Czapnik said they made it hard for themselves.

Sunbury scored the only goal in the 40th minute through Ivan Skorich.

“It’s always good to get a win, especially away from home,” Czapnik said.

“We played into their hands in the second half especially when they only had 10 men.

“We didn’t play as well as we could have. We were … kicking long balls and started to panic.

“It was good to get away with the three points.”

Czapnik said it was the second straight week that they had failed to capitalise when the opposition was reduced to 10 men.

Against Craigieburn City they conceded two goals in that period and lost the game, their only loss for the season.

The win keeps Sunbury in touch with the top sides heading into the Easter break.

They sit fourth on seven points.

Czapnik said they were fairly happy with where they were. He said they would get some players back from injuries after the break which would strengthen the side.

“Going into the break on a win is really good, especially after an awful match the week before,” he said.

“We’re two points off second and five points off top spot. It’s still early days though. If we had lost we would have been having a different discussion.”

Sunbury faces Fawkner after the break.

Meanwhile, Gisborne lost to Westside Strikers in state league 4 west.

The Strikers scored twice in the first half through Jordan Borg and Raul Isac.

Gisborne got one goal back in the second half, but couldn’t get an equaliser, with the Strikers winning 2-1.

Kangaroos set up victory with first half domination

The Sunbury Kangaroos opened their account for this season, beating crosstown rivals the Sunbury Lions in the Essendon District Football League Women’s Premier division.

It was a story of two halves, with the Kangaroos dominating the first half before a more dour second half.

The Kangaroos did all the damage early on, winning 14.7 (91) to 0.2 (2).

Kangaroos coach Bevan Green said it was good to get their first win on the board.

“Wins are always good and you have to celebrate them,” he said.

“It’s nice to get the first win.

“It was a tale of two halves. We came out really strong in the first half, I think we put on 70-odd points in the first half, but a big ground and hot day, I think took its toll a bit.”

Green said improved fitness would come as the side played more games.

“We focused more on skills in the off season,” he said.

“Our fitness isn’t where it could be, but that will come.

“The girls will get game fit. It’s only round two.”

Green said the side showed some really good signs in the first half, making the most of playing at Clarke Oval and using the big oval to their advantage.

He said it would take some time for everyone to gel, with a number of new players in the team.

“Some of these girls played at Sunbury Lions for years and others at Melton Centrals.

“It’s going to take time to gel and learn where everyone runs.

“We’ve got a lot of young girls.”

Regina Said kicked four goals up forward, while Bailee Said and Danni Green kicked three goals each.

The coach said Tara McKean was the standout in the ruck, while he praised the efforts of Bailee Said, who is playing through a leg injury.

He said Regina Said, Tylah Bell and Rebecca Dekazos were the other standouts.

Roos claim Local Cup

By Tara Murray Sunbury Kangaroos came away with a second big win, and bragging rights, but there’s still a lot to work to do for the Essendon District Football League division 2 side.

In the first derby between the Kangaroos and crosstown rivals, East Sunbury, it was one way traffic for much of the game.

The Kangaroos did a lot of the damage on the scoreboard in the first half and while they extended the lead in the second half, the game was all but over at the main break.

The Kangaroos winning 19.16 (130)-8.7 (55) to claim the first Local Cup. Kangaroos’ coach Anthony Leydin was happy to come away with the 12-goal win, but admits they weren’t consistent across the four quarters.

“It was a little similar to the last game,” he said. “We created a bit of an advantage for ourselves but we didn’t really go on with it, which was the disappointing thing.

“I think we were up by eight or nine goals at half-time and it ended up only being two goals more in the second half.

“But an 11-12 goal victory, you take that any day of the week.”

Leydin said with 10 new players in the side in the first two rounds, it was always going to take some time to gel.

He said they showed what they were capable of for patches of the game, but at other times he could see they still had some work to do.

“A trait of ours has been having a little difficultly connecting with our forwards, and that’s going to take a little bit of work.

“We showed in patches we can really put it together, but for not long enough.

“We created enough opportunities for ourselves and didn’t make the most of them, we probably let them off on the hook.”

The Kangaroos had 10 goalkickers, with Josh Burgess (four goals), Lachie Baddeley and Mick Kilty (three each) leading the way.

Leydin said it was hard to find four-quarter performers. He said Burgess, Tierone Cuffe, Matt Welsh, Jacob Opie and Lachie Kaye were among the better players.

For the Thunder, it was a tough night with no multiple goalkickers.

The win gives the Kangaroos a 2-0 start to the season, while the Thunder has slumped to 0-2.

The Kangaroos lost Braiden Wilson, who injured his hamstring in the first half.

Leydin said a few other players struggled with cramp late in the game.

The Kangaroos now have two weekends off, with the Easter break and then a bye.

Leydin said while it wasn’t ideal, it gave them

Green said it would take some time for the side to find out where it sits in the competition.

“It’s going to take until the middle of the year to know where everyone sits.

The Kangaroos’ next game is on April 26 against Hillside under lights, while the Lions face Strathmore.

Jamiee Lee-Wilson is expected to become the first Lions women’s player to play 200 matches in that game.

Rupertswood has caused the first upset of the Riddell District Netball League season, beating Romsey. The Sharks led from start to finish, winning 53-41. Tee Salanoa, in her first game for the Sharks, shot 25 goals. For the Redbacks, who were missing Chelsea Ross, Rebecca Hicks shot 32 goals from 37 shots. Riddell and Diggers Rest played the match of the round, finishing with a 38-all draw. Macedon, Melton Centrals and Wallan were the other winners against Broadford, Lancefield and Rockbank.

RDFL

Rupertswood snuck home in a thriller against Romsey in the Riddell District Football League. The Sharks came from 22 points down midway through the last quarter to win, 16.10 (106) - 15.12 (102). Nick Grigg kicked six goals for the winners. Diggers Rest won the grand final rematch, beating Riddell 15.4 (94) - 7.9 (51). Macedon, Wallan and Melton Centrals all had big wins against Broadford, Lancefield and Rockbank respectively.

Big V

The Sunbury Jets women returned to the winners’ list in the Big V state championship division. The Jets convincingly outplayed the Southern Peninsula Sharks, winning all four quarters in the 86-39 win. All nine Jets players got at least 11 minutes court time, with all but one player scoring.

Lynn Leaupepe continued her good form, scoring a season-high 32 points.

In men’s division 1, the Jets lost to Warrandyte Venom, 74-64.

Bendigo NL

Kyneton made a winning return to the Bendigo Netball League competition.

The Tigers looked right at home on Saturday night against Golden Square, winning 59-19. Gisborne had the week off, with Castlemaine not having an A-grade side. Gisborne, last season’s runners-up, will start its season on Good Friday, against arch-rivals Kyneton.
