Letters to the editor Non-core poll
The voting card stated ‘The “Sunbury Poll” is a poll of voters within the existing boundaries of the municipal district of the Hume City Council to determine the level of support for a stand-alone Sunbury Shire Council.’ Not to be a final decision, just to determine whether further action was warranted. It was a voluntary poll. At all levels of government, Australians do not vote in voluntary polls on important issues. In November, we will not be voluntarily voting to “determine the level of support” for Liberal or Labor. I followed the lead to that poll thoroughly, reading and listening to everything. There was no question in my mind what I was voting for. If it had been voting for a final decision, I would have had no idea what I was voting for, nor would anyone else. The Liberals are the party that invented Core and Non-Core Promises, though I cannot think of a single Core promise. Don Hampshire, Sunbury
Reserve must be kept for kids
The residents in the vicinity of Wyralla Crescent and Carinya Drive, Gisborne are well and truly being short-changed and treated with contempt by the councillors who support the sale of the Wyralla Crescent park reserve. Why do these councillors want to sell off and carve up the only open space parkland in the estate? The reserve should be retained and developed as a children’s playground like many others in the shire. The residents in this estate have been paying many thousands of dollars in rates over the years and should not be losing

Too little too late for school
Only four months ago the Napthine government was removing classrooms from the Kyneton Secondary College year 7 complex. Now, after Labor’s $11.5 million funding commitment and years of campaigning by locals, the government has been forced to take action. This last minute budget announcement will be welcomed by our cash-strapped schools but falls well short of the $11.5 million promised by Labor to completely rebuild and relocate Kyneton Primary School. Labor’s vision for public education in Kyneton is in keeping with the many hours of community consultation that went into development of the Kyneton Education Plan. In contrast the Napthine government has announced funds to patch up existing facilities. The additional work required of the primary school is particularly onerous – the consultation requirements and timelines attached to the funding appear to be designed to force Kyneton Primary School to stay where it is. This is despite the existing site being too small and the school council unanimously supporting the move to the Edgecombe Road site. Mary-Anne Thomas, Labor candidate for Macedon The STARWEEKLY welcomes letters no longer than 200 words. All letters are subject to editing and must include a name, address and phone number. Sea of pink to flood MCG Breast cancer survivor Andrea Casey will join a pink army at the MCG this weekend for the Breast Cancer Network’s Field of Women campaign. The army of up to 15,000 people, all in pink ponchos and standing together in the shape of the network's iconic pink lady, will represent the number of Australians who will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. Ms Casey, of Sunbury, who has a family history of breast cancer, said she hoped to send a strong message to other women and help raise awareness. Since being diagnosed in 2012, Ms Casey has been raising money for the network and sharing her story with others. The campaign event is on Saturday, May 10, at the MCG before the Melbourne v Western Bulldogs night game. Donate at www.fieldofwomen2014.gofundraise.com.au/ page/andreajane. Yasemin Talat

their co-investment in creating 102 new jobs at their new chocolate factory, which is going to be in the northern suburbs. What are the timelines for the St Albans level crossing, and the fruit and vegetable market? We would hope the market opens either late this year or early next year. A lot of the work has been done there. The St Albans level crossing work will commence towards the end of this year and be completed by 2017. It’s quite a challenging engineering project to drop that rail line and work within the confines of a rail corridor. It’s going to take a fair bit of work, but it’s a great project.

The brutal stabbing in Sunshine last month saw an outflowing of community support. In terms of family violence, what can be done to prevent these kinds of attacks? These are challenges for our whole community, and we as a government have significantly increased funding to tackle family violence. There’s certainly been a change in attitude in the community and police in treating family violence as a crime, as it should be. There used to be a perception that what went on behind closed doors was their business, and now I think the attitude is that people have to stand up and speak out against family violence. These are crimes, these are serious crimes, and need to be treated as such. We’re spending a lot of money working with groups that assist victims of family violence so that they can have alternatives in terms of where they live and their future. We’re also spending significant money dealing with perpetrators … that’s always controversial because there’s a lot of people who think money should only be spent on victims, but I believe that if you want to prevent family violence you need to work with men who have a tendency to be violent and help them deal with their behaviour to try and prevent it.

Will councillors be re-elected to Brimbank City Council in March next year as planned? The Minister for Local Government is currently meeting with Brimbank residents and other ratepayers in response to their concerns about the potential waste of council rates if two elections are held within 18 months. These concerns stem from the issue that the commissioners are due to hand over to newly elected councillors in March 2015 and the next general elections for all 79 Victorian councils are scheduled for October 2016, and [they’re concerned] that the cost of holding the two elections is estimated to be over $1.3 million. The minister will consider the views of the community and other relevant information. If he feels any extension of the commissioners’ term is justified, he will bring a submission to cabinet. Do you support Sunbury’s bid to withdraw from the City of Hume? That’s a process we’ve facilitated as a government. We’re now putting in place some of the mechanisms to do that. Our government has facilitated that. What is the your opinion of the proposed Boral landfill in Ravenhall? Melton City Council has received thousands of objections to the application to date. I understand a planning application has been lodged with the Melton council as the relevant planning authority. There is a planning process that needs to be followed and council will need to consider the merits of the application, in accordance with the relevant local and state planning policies. Will the state government fund a 24-hour police station in Caroline Springs? The government will continue to monitor police services in growth communities and will consider any proposals put forward by Victoria Police and the chief commissioner.

Price: Expressions of interest
Taking a pew on about 3.49 secluded hectares, this house of about 80 squares has been designed by architect John Courmadias in such a way that makes it either a huge family spread or a premium conference centre or business retreat. There’s nothing meek about the architecture: multiple gables jut out assertively and, if you’re of a certain age, it may bring to mind the flying nun’s headdress from an iconic ’60s sitcom. Inside, the layout takes advantage of the broad stretch of the house, with a timber/ carpet combo hallway highlighted with
continuous banks of windows running full length at the back. Gorgeous cedar-lined vaulted ceilings, cedar window frames, stepped skirts, lavish use of granite, hints of leadlight and slate, in-wall glass sliders, bi-folds, french doors and sheer roominess deliver stylish and timeless notes. Lush pasture paddocks, a menage, dam, shade trees and large shed with concrete floor establish the property as ideal for equine pursuits or other hobby farm ventures. The double-brick rendered house has five bedrooms and a study. The huge main

Private sale bedroom has a curved wall of windows, a door to the front yard, fitted wardrobe and an en suite with spa, heated towel rack, black granite bench and glass-brick features. Two more bathrooms include the main with a spa and dual basins set in granite. The living hub adjoining the kitchen is a cracker: towering vaulted ceiling, french doors to back and front paved areas, and a focal point of a double-sided wood heater set within a block of granite. The kitchen has granite benchtops, glass splashbacks, timber cabinetry, Bosch dishwasher,

integrated coffee machine and a St George 900mm cooker. Other living zones are a separate dining room and dual-level music/ guest room at the top of stairs, with gas log fire, a loft space and in-roof storage. A remote-controlled four-car garage has a sink, separate storage room and internal access, and double glazing and double-sealed timbers are throughout. There’s nothing stingy about this rural haven and it’s just minutes from Calder Freeway access and a short trip to the city. Carole Levy

A House Needs to Speak to You Whether you call it street appeal, curbside attractions or anything else an undeniable fact is that, no matter whether you are selling or renting first impressions count. Presenting the property from the outside is critical. A house needs to speak to you; it needs to invite you in. The more negatives you can eliminate the easier the decision will be for a buyer or a renter to make. Simple but sound advice at any time, in any market. Some suggestions improve what might be a shabby appearance include: •Tidy up the garden and grounds. Plant some annual flowers that will be in bloom at the right time.
IT’S A MATCHMAKING MACHINE – LIKE DEXTER WAS –
•If repainting is necessary use colours that are current and popular, unless a particular period style (e.g. a federation house) requires a period paint style. •Ensure that all interior and exterior lighting is in good order, and shows your home to its best advantage in the evening and at night. •Make sure the interior, furnishings and fittings are clean and tidy. Like attracts like, so to get a good tenant you need to have a property that is well presented. Otherwise there is a strong chance you won’t attract tenants who will look after the property. We at Dunlop Real Estate are interested in all aspects of real estate and offer full agency services. Born to be free-styling George Ierodiaconou talks to a modest champion They were the rock stars of watersports – bad boys and girls. At the top, professional kiteboarders were armed with company credit cards, year-long tans, gorgeous girls and attitude. Not any more. Now you are more likely to find the world’s best kiteboarders drinking tea with sailing club commodores than tapping a beer keg. World freestyle champion Alex Pastor remembers the early days, when being on the Professional Kiteboard Riders Association (PKRA) world tour was more about the fun than serious competition. “It’s not like that any more,” the young Spaniard says. “There are eight riders in the world who want to win the title. They train almost every day and watch what they eat and drink. When I first started, the competition was more on land, with the parties.” Kiteboarding found the young Pastor when he and his family were holidaying in Tarifa, Spain, in 2003. Pastor spotted a kiteboard floating in the water. He picked it up and, from then on, kiteboarding became his calling. Two years later, Pastor, then 15, moved from Malaga to Tarifa to become a professional kiteboarder. The 24-year-old is now the PKRA world champion after finishing second for the past two years. His riding is regarded as the most stylish and powered in the world. “If you focus on something you like, you always get there in the end. If you haven’t got there, then you haven’t tried hard enough,” he says. But what Pastor can be most proud of is etching his name into kiteboarding history. He is an innovator and was the first to compete in wakeboard boots in 2010. The boots provide an advantage when it is choppy and give extra support during powered tricks. Most freestyle riders have since made

the switch. The trend is even catching on with recreational riders. Pastor is the godfather of the modern powered freestyle movement. Yet he is level-headed and polite, content to let his riding do the talking on the water.
“My biggest goal is to give something to the sport,” he says. “I’m always trying to improve my riding and to also improve kiteboarding in general.” At 24, Pastor says it’s not always rosy at the top of the PKRA. He struggles to cope with defeat in competitions.
“It gets on my mind and somehow I think that I’m not as good any more, so I really have to think hard and try to be positive,” he says. “If you can’t believe you have what it takes to be the best, you won’t be the best.” Visit www.prokitetour.com.
