The information provided by Macedon Ranges council to residents about the proposed sale of parkland in Wyralla Crescent, Gisborne, was minimal and selective, concentrating on an out-of-date open space strategy document from 1999. My inquiries to council produced nothing of any substance. It was only through a freedom of information application that the councillor briefing was obtained, which revealed the sad and less than full picture. The title of the councillor briefing document is Asset Conversion Opportunities. This stated, without any justification, that parklands “have been identified as surplus to council needs”. The first eight pages of the 10-page document detailed properties and how much money could be made from their sale. In a table at the back were brief comments from various council departments. The planning department produced a ‘cut and paste’ from the 1999 strategy. The recreation department’s effort comprised “no comment”. It would seem the council has overlooked the needs of residents. The whole episode is a nasty grab for cash, supported by the majority of ill-informed councillors. Ian Turner, Gisborne

The Hanging Rock debate continues unabated in the local papers and on social media, in spite of the council’s unanimous decision in February to undertake a full consultation process with the community.

The council is listening and consulting with the community, as it has done in the past with the many user groups that make up the Hanging Rock development advisory committee. We all want to “save the rock” and, as with everything in life, it has a cost. Whether the solution is a proposed private investment concept plan, an increase in our council rates or other alternatives, these decisions are not taken lightly. It was heartening to see so many people recently make their first visit to this national icon. It has been in our backyard for an estimated 6 million years so we have a responsibility to maintain it and its surrounds. I’m certain that all have now seen the state of disrepair of the tennis courts, Hanging Rock Racing Club, the 80-year-old barbecues, dilapidated picnic tables, inadequate public conveniences and other facilities in urgent need of upgrade. Additionally, the ongoing eradication programs required for weed and pest

control are to the benefit of all current and future user groups. Are the decaying facilities in the precinct what we are willing to showcase to the rest of Australia, or indeed the world? I think not. To maintain any asset, let alone improve it due to increasing demands, is not dissimilar to managing a growing family’s budget. Supplying daily needs and services is a challenge in itself considering the increase in costs of living, but ongoing maintenance and planning is a far greater challenge. I, like most, value the Rock. It’s sustainability is the key issue for the present and future generations. Scurrilous behaviour, non-factual statements and misleading remarks are counterproductive, particularly when no alternative solution is offered. Personally, I find it far more satisfying to be part of a team willing to be constructive with its comments and contributions to find a solution, knowing the good of all is being taken into account. This initiative gives all stakeholders a number of months to lodge constructive comments and solutions for the future financial and environmental sustainability of Hanging Rock and the surrounding precinct. To do nothing for this treasured icon is unacceptable. Cr Russell Mowatt, Macedon Ranges council The Star Weekly welcomes letters no longer than 200 words. New doubts on Sunbury report Fresh controversy has erupted after the lodging of the Sunbury out of Hume community consultation report with Local Government Minister Tim Bull. The Broadmeadows Progress Association has raised concerns about conclusions and recommendations presented by chairwoman Amanda Millar, saying they are not supported by the report’s statistics. Mrs Millar issued a media release last week claiming considerable support had been shown for the appointment of commissioners or another independent body to “protect assets and to equitably manage” the Sunbury out of Hume process. When challenged, Mrs Millar said: “35 per cent [26 out of 75] of respondents who provided a response on this issue called for the appointment of commissioners, administrators, or another independent body to oversee the transition. “This was the most common response to the question re: how to transition – and the committee was of the view that 35 per cent, while not a clear majority, demonstrated ‘considerable’ support in this context.” The push for administrators was laid aside earlier this year when the former local government minister Jeannette Powell reassured Hume councillors they would continue to represent their constituents until the next local elections in 2016. However, new minister Tim Bull refused to back his former colleague when asked if

it was his intention to appoint non-elected administrators to supervise the new Sunbury entity or to take over Hume as a whole and oversee the separation of Sunbury. “It would not be appropriate to pre-empt what transition arrangements the panel may recommend,” Mr Bull said. It is not the first time the government has claimed majority support for Sunbury’s secession, Broadmeadows Progress Association spokeswoman Sonja Rutherford said. “Really, to draw such conclusions one would have to question the authenticity of the

[consultation] questions and the interpretation of the results,” Mrs Rutherford said. She also called into question the validity of the original poll asking Hume voters for a yes/ no answer about the proposal that Sunbury secede from Hume. The consultative committee’s report will be considered by three-person, governmentappointed panel assigned with dividing assets and recommending new boundaries and structure for a separate Sunbury shire. The panel’s final report to the Minister is due by June 30. Mrs Millar’s report is available at the Transport, Planning and Local Infrastructure department’s website: www.dpcd.vic.gov.au/ localgovernment/projects-and-programs.

Rolling up for green day Trentham Sustainability Group (TSG) aims to inspire more change and better environmental practices in the community by holding a World Environment Day celebration. On June 5, the international day celebrates all things environment, raises awareness of local issues, gains political attention and inspires public action. Charles Sherlock, of TSG, says the day reminds people to turn to their own backyards to prompt change. “We want people to keep on being aware of what they can do around their homes to be more environmentally conscious.” The Trentham group has turned its focus on energy consumption. The town is dependent on electricity; there is no natural gas available. The group has organised environmental audits of houses, from newly built homes

to Edwardian weatherboards, to see where sustainability improvements can be made. Mr Sherlock said a “crew” was involved in the community garden and a group of farmers was learning how to use their farming land more economically. As part of World Environment Day, the Trentham group is teaming up with Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group to hold a celebratory dinner. Mark Wakeham, acting chief executive of Environment Victoria, the peak organisation aiming to safeguard the environment by advocacy and education, will speak at the dinner, at the Cosmopolitan Hotel, Trentham, from 6.30-7.30pm. Cost is $30; book by May 30. Details: mrsgonline.org.au Angela Valente

A happy ending By Yasmine Talat Mother’s Day came early for Sunbury mother Jane Elliott in 2012 when daughter Hayley Grace Elliott surprised her. Hayley, who turns two on Wednesday, was born premature when Mrs Elliott was only 33 weeks pregnant. It was a bittersweet Mother’s Day gift for Mrs Elliott, who initially spent four weeks apart from her baby girl while Hayley was cared for in hospital. “It was a really scary experience,” Mrs Elliott said. “You don’t know what to expect – there’s so many things going through your mind.” Mrs Elliott experienced a healthy pregnancy and said she was not expecting an early birth. She said she was a “planner” and had booked her hospital bed and expected to leave hospital with lots of flowers and her baby, but she couldn’t. “I couldn’t hold her, I couldn’t take her home, I couldn’t bathe her,” she said. After spending time in the special care unit when she was born, and regular check-ups along the way, Hayley is “healthy and brilliant”, says her mother. “She’s just kicked goals from the moment she was born,” Mrs Elliott said. She said she hoped her story would raise awareness about premature birth and give other parents hope. She said organisations such as Life’s Little Treasures Foundation were informative and a great way to meet other parents with similar experiences. The foundation is Australia’s leading charity dedicated to providing information, support and understanding to the parents of babies born premature or sick. Drive to boost emergency response

Going wild for Lorraine “Cancer has touched me in so many ways – it’s all around me,” Lorraine Spencer says. Mrs Spencer’s mother had breast cancer and another friend is fighting bladder cancer. Last year, the Sunbury resident took part in Relay for Life, a fund-raiser for Cancer Council Victoria. Her team raised $4200. This year, Khe Sanh team members want to double the amount and are pulling out all stops. Mrs Spencer’s son-in-law Shaun Evans (pictured) is hosting a dance in Woodend

this Saturday to raise money for the team. For almost 10 years, Mr Evan’s stepfather has been fighting prostate and bladder cancers. “Everyone has someone in their family who has been touched by cancer,” Mr Evans said. “We’ll be doing more fund-raisers throughout the year – this is kicking it off, it’s the first one for them.” The Relay for Life Sunbury event will be held in October. But people can kick up their heels on Saturday to the sounds from The Wild Bunch,

a six-piece New Orleans-style party band who will present a mix of swing and rhythm and blues. Mr Evans will be play the saxophone. The dance will be held upstairs at the Victoria Hotel. Doors open at 7pm with music and dancing from 7.30pm. Tickets cost $15 online until Friday at northotown.com.au or at the door for $20. Details: 0449 922 425

Sunbury’s SES unit is hunting for new volunteers who want to help keep the community safe. Spokesman Jarrod Bell urged residents to step up and join the crew. “If you are interested in volunteering, this is a brilliant way of participating and helping the community,” he said. Mr Bell said people were often worried that they didn’t have the time or necessary skills. But he said the SES was an inclusive service that welcomed people of all ages and backgrounds. “We provide everything from training to equipment,’’ he said. ‘‘All you need to do is give us your time. Anyone with an interest in becoming more involved with the community is more than welcome.” Mr Bell said the unit’s long-term goal was to double the number of volunteers to better meet the needs of the growing community. “We’ve got a really good, tight crew in Sunbury who do a brilliant job day-in and day-out, but Sunbury is growing and changing.” All SES volunteers receive accredited training. An information night will be held at unit’s headquarters in McDougall Road, Sunbury from 7.30pm on Wednesday, May 28. For more details, visit www.facebook. com/sessunbury or call 1300 842 737.

KYNETON 5 Bodkin Street, 3444 Keatings Real Estate Woodend: 5427 2999 When local identity Mr W Bodkin built this house in 1861, it was a classy Victorian, representative of his station in life. It bopped along in the street named after him until its present owners took it by the scruff of the neck and turned it into a showcase of industrial luxe, with the best period bits retained. A dab hand at interior design has kept the original deep skirts, floorboards, doors and ruby-glass sidelights. But they’ve square-set the 3.6-metre ceilings and created contemporary living spaces decked out in crisp white, black accents and splashes of oak.

Price: $695,000 (reserve)

Auction: June 7 at 1pm

Ranged along the entry hall are three large bedrooms, including the main where the impact of the industrial luxe story begins to unfold. Anchored by grey woollen carpet, the gorgeous room has an island wall concealing a walk-through wardrobe and an en suite featuring subway tiling, chic lightfittings, dual square basins on oak, and a walk-in shower with enormous rainhead. Two steps at hall’s end lead to a dazzling living area with polished concrete floor; north-facing, black steel-framed double-glazed windows; coved ceiling; and inset wood heater, flanked by wood

storage cubes beneath ply wall panelling. This lovely area also incorporates a powder room and the main bathroom with a picture-window framing a snap of elegant bamboo, a clawfoot bath, subway tiling and a single basin on oak. Setting its own trend, the kitchen brings together the black-and-white theme with fabulous flair: one matte black wall (others are white); glossy, black-tiled splashback; and an oak-topped island workbench juxtaposed with white cabinets. Other perks are an electric cooktop, underbench oven and a walk-in pantry with the sort of charm that begs for jars

of preserves lining the oak shelves. The pantry’s neighbour is a laundry with oak benches and storage. A timber deck out back combines with a verandah on a rusticated garage/workshop (plumbed, power, powder room) to provide an idyllic relaxation zone that takes in views of an upper-terrace vegie/herb/cottage garden with henhouse perfectly perched. Still want more? The property has a side concrete driveway behind a roller door, a 6.1-star energy rating and is in a spot around the corner from almost everything. Carole Levy

Make Your Home More Appealing if Selling in Winter A plethora of advice is available to owners contemplating selling their home in winter. The lawn is not as lush, the weather is usually bad and, unlike the longer days of summer, you have less time to show it off during daylight hours. But not everyone has the luxury of waiting until the traditional spring or summer home-buying season to put up that "for sale" sign. And while it's true that in most areas you'll probably have fewer buyers during the winter, you will have less competition from other sellers. Here are some ideas which we consider may improve the appeal and ambience of your home at

inspection time and increase its appeal to prospective buyers: *If you're showing during the winter, think "warm, cosy and homey,” If you have heating use it to make the house welcoming. Buyers who come in and aren't comfortable won't stay long. *Have open house during the high-daylight hours, not late afternoon. *Make the most of the natural light you do have. Have the curtains and blinds cleaned and open them as wide as possible during daytime showings. Then clean all windows and glass doors. *Make the home comfortable. Set the scene and help the buyers see themselves living happily in this house. We at Dunlop Real Estate are interested in all aspects of real estate and offer full agency services.
