20 years of Business in Wyndham
Welcome to the Congratulations Wyndham Business on 20 great Awards 2014 years
From very humble beginnings in 1995, the Wyndham Business Awards have grown to become the most prestigious event on the Wyndham City business calendar.
A message from the mayor It is with great pride that I hold the position of mayor in the year of the Wyndham Business Award’s 20th anniversary celebrations. The passion and commitment of our business community, the ongoing generous support of our sponsoring partners and the valuable contribution of our judging panels have ensured the ongoing success and reputation of these awards. Just as Wyndham City has grown, so too has the stature of our awards. Our city has grown from a population of less than 60,000 in 1995 to one that will soon exceed 200,000. With that population growth our business community has also grown; both in number and quality. A strong, smart and passionate business community is critical to the long term sustainability of any city and Wyndham City’s businesses certainly meet that criteria. It is fitting that in celebrating excellence the Wyndham Business Awards acknowledge the contribution of our business community in growing the local economy, providing jobs for the resident workforce and contributing to the greater wellbeing of the community. Thank you to our major sponsor, Powercor Australia; silver sponsor, Cedar Woods Properties Limited; and our supporting category sponsors. To our voluntary independent judging panel I pass on a special note of thanks for your time commitment and expertise. Congratulations to all finalists and winners. To all Wyndham businesses, I wish you a long and prosperous future.
Bob Fairclough OAM Mayor of Wyndham
Over the past two decade it is estimated that more than 250 awards have been presented to companies, both large and small, with a combined workforce of 6000 employees. Perhaps even more imposing is the total number of entries that have been received over that time – a number estimated to be in excess of 2000. As with any award program, not every business achieves the ultimate success. However, the benefits derived from entering are significant, providing a great opportunity to assess current performance and realign company goals and objectives. While the awards have adopted a tried and true formula, just like business itself, their ultimate ongoing success has been achieved by adopting new and innovative ways for recognising excellence to ensure they remain fresh and relevant. Last Friday night’s gala presentation evening represented the culmination of the awards, however, as has been the case in previous years, much work is undertaken through the course of the preceding five months. This includes a special breakfast launch, entry form workshop for new entrants, completion of submission by participating businesses, evaluation of entries by an independent judging panel, declaration of finalists, on-site judging visits and final decision making. Over the past 20 years the independent judging panels have often commented on the difficult task they face in declaring a winner in each of the categories. It has become more evident in recent times that many more businesses are submitting quality entries that reflect a high level of business acumen, a capacity to remain sustainable and grow in a competitive and challenging environment. In reflecting on the 20th presentation of the awards, Wyndham City’s economic development portfolio holder, Cr Intaj Khan said: “The Wyndham Business Awards have consistently operated on a cost-neutral basis and this position could not have been possible without the valuable contribution and ongoing support of the award’s sponsoring partners.” “Victoria University has sponsored the event every year since inception and for well over 10 years, Powercor Australia has been the award’s major sponsor.” As a celebration of business excellence in Wyndham City the awards have recognised the achievements of many outstanding companies across a broad range of industry sectors. Some of Wyndham’s largest companies including AB Oxford Cold Storage, NuFarm Australia and the Alex Fraser Group have enjoyed the honour of being named Business of the Year. Success has come in all sizes with husband and wife team Bart and Alaine Beek’s unique Essence Food Studio and small familyoperated Aus Lock and Safe Company more recent winners of the number one trophy. Many elements have combined to ensure the ongoing success of the Wyndham Business Awards. However, Cr Khan said: “Without the support of our strong and passionate business community there would be no business recognition program. Congratulations to all finalists and winners and let us all look forward to the next 20 years.”

congratulations to the winners Tourism & Hospitality The Park Hotel
New and Emerging Enchanting Parties
The Park Hotel, located in Watton Street, Werribee, offers the largest range of craft beer in Melbourne. With a passion for food, their patrons and the broader Wyndham community, the team at the Park has grown the business in a relatively short time to one that enjoys a reputation for quality service, great amenity and superior food and beverage offerings.

Cummins South Pacific is part of a global network that is the world’s largest independent manufacturer of diesel engines. While it could be easy for many large firms to focus only on bottom line profit, Cummins’ focus is much broader. The company’s Laverton North operation is a great corporate citizen for the people of Wyndham. Its many contributions to the community have included the donation of diesel engines to the Point Cook Secondary College Trade Training Centre and taking a lead role in the Young Ambassadors for Industry Program brokered by the WynBay Local Learning and Employment Network. In 2014, the company employed five 1st-year apprentices and its work experience program increased by 61 per cent. While the real estate business can often be a turbulent one, the team at Barry Plant is once again riding a wave of success. After taking out the Franchise category at the 2005 Business Awards, Barry Plant Werribee and Tarneit directors Donald McKillop and Rick O’Halloran said they were excited to see the business grow in the future. “We have unquestionably the largest real estate sales team throughout the City of Wyndham, with seven sales people at Tarneit and four at the Werribee office,” Mr McKillop said. “With 11 staff in real estate sales we are able to expose more properties to more buyers, creating more sales than our competitors. We also achieve shorter days on market and better sales. “We are in the initial planning stage of establishing another Barry Plant branch within the City of Wyndham. “We are also planning a commercial arm to our current business. The planned expansion of East Werribee, in conjunction with the established commercial sector of Wyndham,
will bring opportunities to capitalise on with our business strategies and growth.” The Werribee office opened in July 2003, and Mr McKillop said he felt that his team’s resilience in a testing market was what made them special. “The things that set our organisation apart from our competitors are our fantastic growth statistics in challenging market times and having a bulletproof strategy for servicing the suburbs of Truganina, Tarneit, Hoppers Crossing, Werribee and Wyndham Vale from two different office points in Watton Street, Werribee and Sayers Road, Tarneit,” he said. WINNER Business Person of the Year Chris Byrne
WINNER Mayoral award
Cummins South Pacific
Cummins South Pacific prides itself on its partnership with Point Cook College and its heavy diesel trade training centre. It lists the partnership, which helped the company become an employer of choice in Wyndham, as its greatest achievement over the past 12 months. Laverton branch manager Mick Cristaldi said Cummins had worked very closely with the WynBay Local Learning and Employment Network to develop a program to provide students from partner schools with exposure to real workplace tasks. He said the company’s aim was to make global opportunities available locally.
Westpoint Ford dealer principal Chris Byrne is Wyndham’s Business Person of the Year. Mr Byrne is only the second person to win the award, after the category was introduced at the 2013 Wyndham Business Awards. Also nominated this year were Shawn’s Swim School owner Shawn Read, Negotiis director Amanda Newton and Megalines Insurance and Risk Advisors founder Bunmi Ajati. Mr Byrne, a Hoppers Crossing businessman, was chosen as the winner because of his “never say die” attitude to business. Mr Byrne began working in the car industry when he was 18 and has been at the helm of Westpoint Ford since 1994.
He said the award was recognition of his determination to look after his staff and customers. Mr Byrne also has a passion for helping Wyndham’s disadvantaged youth. He volunteers his time to help with community projects, local sports teams and the 20th Man Fund, which helped establish a program to help homeless youth in the municipality. “I spend a lot of time in the community doing work that is geared towards young people,” he said. “I have four young children and they have many opportunities but so many other kids don’t … We have a responsibility as corporate citizens to help.”
“Our aim is to influence career pathways of students and recruit some of these students directly to Cummins’ Apprentice Program. Cummins employs over 200 apprentices in the South Pacific region and considers the new trade training centre vital to encouraging apprentices to the industry,” Mr Cristaldi said. Cummins South Pacific is a subsidiary of Cummins Inc, the world’s largest independent manufacturer of diesel engines. It opened its Laverton branch in November 1996. It services the automotive, power generation, marine and rail markets. In 2013, the company won the large service provider category at the Wyndham Business Awards. It was also a finalist for apprentice employer of the year at the National Training Awards. This year, Cummins is again a finalist for the large service provider category at the business awards. “The Cummins Power Generation business is a global provider of electric generators, power systems and related accessories, components and services,” Mr Cristaldi said.

Jan Grapsas, from Gift Givers Gallery in Werribee, is a finalist in the small retail category of the awards. It is Mrs Grapsas’ fourth year as a finalist, having won the category last year. Mrs Grapsas’ said she was honoured to be recognised in her field once again. “I cried when we won last year,” she said. “I was really overcome with emotion, with that being our third year as a finalist. “It’s very exciting for our customers as well because it makes them feel fabulous that they’re shopping in a prize-winning store.” The shop has everything from kitchen supplies to novelty men’s gifts and Mrs Grapsas said she was proud to offer something for almost anyone’s taste. “We’re definitely a one stop shop,” she
said. “We carry lines in our store that no-one else in Wyndham carries. Being individual in the area and being brave enough to step outside the box and take on products that are different to other retailers sets us apart.” Mrs Grapsas said the business had grown since opening in November 2009 and now offered everything from free gift wrapping to free delivery for furniture or larger items for customers. “We love what we do because we live here,” she said. “The local community makes our business what it is and we want to give back to them as much as we can.” For more information visit www.giftgivers. gallery
“We offer the full complement of sports medicine services under the one roof,” Mr Round said. “We operate out of a purpose-built, customdesigned, state-of-the-art medical clinic on one of the region’s busiest streets. “Within our centre we have 20 consulting rooms, a large gym and Pilates studio, as well as office spaces and a large conference room. “This is the one of the largest and most modern physiotherapy and sports medicine centres within Victoria.” To complement the existing services, Symmetry Physiotherapy and Sports Medicine will introduce a multi-disciplinary pain management program for people suffering from chronic pain. The program will be the first of its kind in Wyndham.

The directors of Negotiis joined forces nearly five years ago and were determined to bring some fresh air to traditional accounting and business advice. “We’re not just about tax, sure it’s an important consideration, but we spend more time working with our clients looking forward, shaping plans and identifying their business strengths and weaknesses.” Mr Holman said the business had also embraced new technology to put it at the forefront of the industry. Houghton Strategic Solutions provides financial planning services for people who understand that receiving professional advice can change their financial future. The Point Cook business offers strategic solutions that take into consideration people’s needs, risks, opportunities and goals, to help them get where they want to be. Director Melinda Houghton says for some people that means achieving a financial goal, while for others it is striving to remove a financial issue. “I started this business to prove that the provision of financial advice did not need to focus only on
the wealthy,” she says. “Our business is ethical, down to earth and focuses on providing financial advice to those who need it and understand the value. These people are generally working hard but are not sure how to take that step from where their finances may be stressful to where their financial situation provides opportunities.” Ms Houghton said the business had grown rapidly since opening three years ago and had recently moved to a larger office in Wallace Avenue. This is the first time it has entered the business awards.

20 years of Business in Wyndham WINNER Retail - Large
Werribee Automotive Group
WINNER Tourism and Hospitality The Park Hotel
One Wyndham business knows the true definition of the phrase “from little things, big things grow”. Werribee and Western Automotive Group was established about 20 years ago, but it was much smaller than it is today. Director Kelly Van Blommestein said the company started as just one dealership, Werribee Nissan, before adding Werribee Kia, Werribee Mitsubishi, and Werribee Volkswagen to the fleet. It later added Western Nissan, Western Kia and, most recently, Western Highway Honda. Ms Blommestein said she felt that Werribee and Western Automotive Group’s (WAG) success came from its resilience. “Maintaining our business performance in an increasingly competitive market and trying times has required WAG to continually assess our business practices to
ensure our dealerships are relevant to the marketplace,” Ms Blommestein said. “We are a locally owned business. Our staff members are provided the opportunity to grow their careers through training and we have a large level of community involvement.” WAG has tasted success at the Wyndham Business Awards in the past, taking out the Large Retail category in 2011 and being named a finalist in the same category last year.
Two years ago, The Park Hotel burst onto the Wyndham culinary scene. It’s owners transformed an old rundown building into what has become one of the most recognised meeting places in the municipality. Their vision has been recognised in the past, taking out the 2013 award for Best New and Emerging Business at the Wyndham Business Awards. This year they have once again been recognised, as a finalist in the Tourism and Hospitality category. Functions manager Jess Catania said the restaurant and bar was getting ready to celebrate its second birthday on September 19. “It began as a project for directors Nick Christou, Anthony Closter and Isaac Zietek,” Ms Catania said. “The Park Hotel used to be the old Tudor hotel, which didn’t necessarily have the
best reputation. The Park Hotel stage 1 and 2 redevelopment has taken place to make it what it is today – a huge focus on safety of its patrons and a unique experience for all patrons.” Outside of the Wyndham Business Awards, The Park has been honoured with countless awards and featured on the television show Post Cards. Ms Catania said the hotel had become known for its fine food and wide range of beer. “We have a different service offering than other local hospitality establishments,” she said. “A strong focus on good food, good beer in a safe and urban environment. We also have a focus on providing a customised and personal function experience no matter what the event.”

20 years of Business in Wyndham Region’s future in good hands Dear local business, I congratulate all businesses nominated for a 2014 Wyndham Business Award. The awards are now in their 20th year and reflect the great success and progress of businesses across our region. Throughout Lalor we have more than 10,000 local businesses across a broad range of industries. These businesses are the lifeblood of our city. Many are family businesses established by local residents and I thank them for their ongoing commitment to our region. Many are new businesses drawn to our region for various reasons and I thank them for their commitment and continued presence. All create significant employment opportunities for local families and continue to ensure a productive local economy.
The awards are a fantastic opportunity to showcase our local business talent. They also provide an important opportunity for businesses to interact with one another, share experiences and build relationships. Lalor faces considerable challenges over coming years that impact on business productivity and growth: • More than 10,000 families in Lalor are being stung by cuts to childcare, making working more difficult for parents. • More than $3.36 million cut to local road funding will result in even further turmoil for local commuters who continue to battle road congestion across Lalor. I will continue working through these issues, and others, with local industry. Over recent months I have been meeting with
a range of business owners, their staff, and other community organisations to discuss ways to address the growing unemployment across Melbourne’s west. For the remainder of 2014, I urge local businesses to continue building relationships with the community to seek out further employment opportunities for residents. I urge them to find opportunities to work together to ensure our region continues to attract business in the short and long term. The business awards shine a light on the growing potential of our economy. Our business leaders continue to surprise me with their initiative and determination to excel in their field. Kind regards Joanne Ryan, MP

of categories, including the prestigious Wyndham Business of the Year, the awards recognise the diversity of enterprise in Wyndham. From coffee shops to web designers, tourism to support organisations, and sports teams to pet grooming – it’s clear we really do have everything on hand! Congratulations to the winners and finalists for this year’s awards. Thank you to the organisers of the Wyndham Business Awards for your dedication and hard work in putting
together this important event. While many established businesses continue to grow and new local businesses open, at a time when the unemployment rate is rising, it is increasingly important that the community continues to support local businesses and local jobs. Team behind the name the real winners Diversity is the key to a successful business, according to one former Wyndham Business Awards winner. Harcourts Wyndham City took out the franchise category at last year’s awards and was a finalist in the same category this year. Ben Fabretto, director of the real estate agency, said he believed it was his staff members who set the business apart from others in the Wyndham area. “Our highly-skilled, experienced staff from diverse backgrounds bring a heightened energy and enthusiasm to the industry. The office culture is one of fun, laughter and hard work,” Mr Fabretto
said. “We strive to achieve the highest possible results for all our clients. “Our team is dedicated to providing the very best in customer service and going that extra mile for all clients.” Supported by general manager Jay Radbourne, senior sales partner Michelle Chick and business development manager Alice Mosut, Mr Fabretto said the business had been a member of the Harcourt Group, the fastest growing real estate group in the Australasia, since October 2012. “Located in busy Watton Street, our main focus is to provide
the City of Wyndham with all their real estate needs including residential, rental and commercial,” he said. “We are expanding right now, doubling the size of our office space to cater for the company’s growth. “We strive to provide the community with an exceptional level of personal and professional service.” For more information visit www.wyndhamcity.harcourts.com.au

20 years of Business in Wyndham
An agency you can rely on After just three years of selling property in Wyndham, Reliance Real Estate has been recognised as a finalist in the Wyndham Business Awards. Director and officer in effective control Sunil Kumar said the business had gone from strength to strength since opening its doors. “Reliance Real Estate started out with only two agents in 2011,” Mr Kumar said. “In the three years of operation the company has now expanded its staff to eight permanent and two part-time.” Mr Kumar attributed the company’s success to its staff’s local knowledge. “All staff are residents of the Wyndham area, living, earning and spending locally, which gives them the advantage of having intimate knowledge of the local community, therefore being the best advocates for promoting the area to new clients considering moving to the Wyndham locale,” he said.
While Reliance Real Estate assists clients with selling and purchasing vacant land and residential properties, it also specialises in broad acreage sales in the Wyndham area. They also have a rental department which continues to grow every month. Mr Kumar said his company’s ability to customise services are what set them apart. “Our aim is to be recognised by local residents and experts in the real estate field due to our focus on personal service and involvement, rather than big money marketing,” he said. “We custom design our services to meet our client’s individual needs as buying and selling property is, in most cases, a very personal and emotional experience.” Mr Kumar said by becoming a finalist in the Wyndham Business Awards, he was hoping to be able to achieve his dream of expanding his company in the western suburbs. “Over the past 12 months Reliance has made some substantial
Full power ahead Andrew Stubbs believes his commitment to providing customers with a one stop shop for all their battery needs is what sets Hoppers Crossing’s Battery World apart from its competitors. Mr Stubbs opened the Old Geelong Road business last June, believing there was a need for a wide-ranging battery store in Wyndham. “Battery World provides a one stop shop for all portable power solutions,” he says. “Most of our competitors will focus on one area. For example, an automotive retailer will sell car batteries but won’t sell watch batteries or chargers for video cameras. “They also do not have the ability to accurately test a vast range of batteries and equipment in the way in which we can. :As a result, many of our competitors send their
customers to us for testing on warranty issues with their own products.” Battery World is also committed to helping the environment and runs a battery recycling program, with drop-off points in store at shop 4, 428 Old Geelong Road, Hoppers Crossing and The Grange Community Centre. Mr Stubbs said the recycling program was a “very unique” part of his business. He also prides himself of Battery World being able to provide customers with excellent service. “Customer service is a key focus. To be able to provide customers with the best possible products available, in a timely manner, with a friendly atmosphere within the store is something that we take great pride in,” he said. “In our first 12 months of operation, many goals have been achieved and exceeded.”
changes to our manner of operations, which has positively affected our business, clients and even staff members,” he said. “We have increased our community involvement and established both our name and business ethic into the surrounding area. “Being locals ourselves, it is our main goal to support our local community and its members in whatever manner we can. “Our long term goal is to continue to grow in the western suburbs and become a larger employer in the Wyndham area. We would eventually like to move to a bigger office when this happens.” Reliance Real Estate is a finalist in the Service Medium category of the Wyndham Business Awards.

Centre of excellence Construction of the new $45 million Leisure and Events Centre may be complete by the middle of next year. Wyndham council’s vision for the redeveloped centre is to create a vibrant and attractive community hub with spaces dedicated to community well-being, events, recreation and socialising. It will include a café and piazza, aqua play areas, five new pools, two giant waterslides and a health and fitness precinct with gym and fitness classes. The centre will have improved sound, acoustics and stage area and 551 car spaces. Other inclusions will be accessible change areas, a lift and a crèche. As part of the redevelopment, the centre’s stage will be extended to improve sight lines. The back of the stage area will be increased to allow for four dressing rooms, a green room and better
access to the stage. There will also be a chairlift on both sides. There will be two new bar areas and an associated lounge area in the foyer to allow for efficient services of food and beverages. The Wyndham Business Awards may return to the redeveloped centre once it is complete, however an awards’ spokesperson said a venue for next year’s ceremony was yet to be determined. Industry knowledge a key The team at Capture Recruitment has more than 55 years combined experience in the recruitment industry. Since opening its doors in 2010, the Wallace Avenue business has strived to provide casual and permanent staffing solutions to businesses across the western suburbs. Managing director Tony Ebejer said all of the business’ consultants originate from the industry they now recruit for. “Much of Capture Recruitment’s success stems from our staff’s knowledge and experience within the industries we service,” he said. “Hands-on experience in trades and construction, manufacturing and process, transport and logistics, accounting and finance, and administration and management see Capture Recruitment benefit greatly from this invaluable knowledge and understanding of the niche industries we supply to.” In 2011, Capture Recruitment was a finalist in
the category of new and emerging business in the Wyndham Business Awards. This year, it is a finalist in the small service category. Mr Ebejer said Capture Recruitment prided itself on its ability to meet the expectations of clients in terms of quality, performance, reliability and cost. It is able to supply businesses with temporary staff, as well as permanent personnel, and can advise on salary levels and assist with internal interviewing. “Our name, Capture Recruitment, is what we do – that is to capture our customers’ needs and candidate knowledge. Only by listening and asking those vital questions of them can we ensure their service needs are captured,” Mr Ebejer said. “Our corporate vision is to make Capture Recruitment the best recruitment provider, first in the City of Wyndham, then across Melbourne.”

The swimming school is nominated for the medium service category at this year’s Wyndham Business Awards, while owner Shawn Read is in the running for Business Person of the Year. 2010 Backing new kids on the block Wyndham’s new and emerging businesses have been supported by Crowe Horwath Werribee in the past, but now they are being supported in a new way. Crowe Horwath are business advisers and, according to principal of the Werribee office Peter Mayall, they know how to get the best out of a person. “Every year, hundreds of entrepreneurs take the step into owning their own business, but many don’t succeed. Some fall over in the first few years,” Mr Mayall said. “The dream of managing your own time, earning more and having a better lifestyle is often replaced by a reality of long hours and sometimes significant financial hardship. “Taking the step into being your own boss is a major one, and should be made carefully. “Crowe Horwath has a wealth of experience in helping businesses to lay down the foundations for success and to grow from there, stay
in control, monitor, plan, project and respond to our ever changing business environment.” Mr Mayall said his business specialised in strategic planning, benchmarking, business tax, financing, insurance and personal financial planning. Formerly known as WHK, Crowe Horwath is made up of more than 3000 staff located in Australia and New Zealand. Crowe Horwath continues its support of the Wyndham Business Awards by sponsoring the 2014 New and Emerging category. The category will recognise the best new businesses in Wyndham. Breaking barriers
The Wyndham Cultural Centre is proud to once again host this year’s Wyndham Business Awards. Located at 177 Watton Street, Werribee, the centre is owned and managed by Wyndham City Council. It consists of the Tattersalls Theatre, seating 477, with full fly tower and orchestra pit, a fully licensed bar (which is open for most performances), Werribee library, an art gallery and café. The centre’s facilities can be used by all members of the community. It has ramps, wide doors and removable theatre seats to allow access to all people of all abilities. The centre was officially opened in May 2001 and was formerly known as the Centenary Hall.
In the past year, Wyndham Community and Education Centre has helped people from 75 countries, speaking 68 languages, gain access to education, training and settlement services. Chief executive Jennie Barrera says the centre, which was established 40 years ago, is dedicated to helping Wyndham’s young people, disadvantaged residents and newly arrived migrants. “Wyndham CEC works closely with people who need a hand to make a fresh start,” she says. “We help build individual and community capacity so that people can enhance their present circumstances and future prospects.” The centre’s dedication to helping others has previously been recognised at the Wyndham Business Awards.
It was a common meeting place for community groups to gather and participate in functions, such as debutant balls, presentations, awards ceremonies, dances and wedding celebrations. On November 25, theatre-goers and season subscribers are invited to celebrate the Wyndham Cultural Centre’s theatre season launch. The free event will feature amazing guests and an exciting line-up of shows. It doesn’t matter whether you like drama or musicals, whether you’re young or old, there will be something for everyone at the Wyndham Cultural Centre in 2015. A complimentary supper will be offered on the night. Bookings are essential. Details: 8734 6000
In 2011 and 2012, Wyndham CEC was a finalist for the service category award. Last year, it took home the award for best small not-for-profit organisation. Ms Barrera says the centre has changed a lot since opening in 1974. It was initially set up as a playgroup and drop-in centre but has grown to meet the changing needs of the local community. Some of the services it offers include education for young people, adult English classes, vocational courses in children’s and business services, as well as social inclusion programs for new and emerging communities. “Wyndham CEC has a long and proud history of providing quality, individually-tailored programs and services based on principles of best practice in adult education,” Ms Barrera says.

Quality security locked in The past 12 months have been a busy time for Aus Lock & Safe. The Laverton North locksmith, safe and security business was named business of the year at the 2013 Wyndham Business Awards and has spent the past year meeting the increasing security needs of homes and businesses both in Wyndham and on a national level. “The exposure and awareness gained from winning the award has leveraged great new opportunities for us,” director Jason Catlow says. Aus Lock & Safe leads the industry as safe experts and has recently introduced a new range of safes to the market. Mr Catlow says the Platinum Safes have generated a great response. “The response has been fantastic and the collective views from industry experts are [praising] the safes’ quality construction, premium design mechanisms and the competitive price range,” he says. “Our safes have been in high demand from retail businesses needing
quality deposit safes and home owners requiring a quality safe that is both cash rated and fire rated to protect their belongings.” Mr Catlow says Aus Lock & Safe has been serving the western suburbs for 26 years, after starting out as a father and son operation. He believes the business has a strong reputation for reliable service and expert knowledge and is leading the industry. “We pride ourselves on providing prompt and high quality service work, which sets us apart from our competitors,” he says. “Our support of local youth employment agencies, Neighbourhood Watch, local charities and local schools demonstrates our strong commitment in the Wyndham community. “We are involved in the Youth Now workplace program which assists youth from schools in Melbourne’s western metropolitan region to gain valuable hands on work experience and an understanding of what is expected in the work experience.”
The right match for Werribee Werribee’s MatchWorks aims to be more than just a job broker. The Synnot Street-based employment agency strives to assist people who have disabilities or are from disadvantaged backgrounds find work. “MatchWorks works to increase the skills, motivation and employability of people in the pathway to not only getting a job, but in keeping the job in the longer term,” general manager Michael Wasley says. “MatchWorks provides financial and mentoring support for people to learn new skills, attain certificate qualifications and to return to study. Importantly, MatchWorks sets up partnerships with multiple employers and other community services to ensure its work with people is targeted in the right areas. “Through its employer and business relationships, MatchWorks is able to tap into jobs that are not yet advertised, and hence it is able to create direct corridors to achievable jobs for people in the region.”
The business has been helping Wyndham jobseekers since 1998. Its association with the Wyndham Business Awards dates back to 2005, when the employment agency won the medium service category. In 2007, the business signed on as an award sponsor. In 2011, MatchWorks developed a program with the Stepping Up consortium to help people with mental illness or substance abuse problems find work. “This program combines the service delivery of the outstanding Stepping Up drug and alcohol counsellors, with the MatchWorks employment services and enhances the effectiveness of both,” Mr Wasley said. “The initiative has realised healthier, more stable citizens who in turn become more job ready and employable for the Wyndham business community.”
