History of the Werribee Racing Club Racing in Werribee has overcome its fair share of hurdles to remain a large part of the region’s illustrious heritage. It was April 22, 1862 when the first Werribee Cup was run. The six-race card, held as part of a sports day to conclude a military encampment of the volunteer corps on the Werribee Estate, marked the birth of what would become a proud tradition of racing at Werribee. The Cup drew a field of three, Black Bess, Minerva and Nelly Bly. The jockeys wore their military uniforms. Black Bess put on a courageous run to win the inaugural Werribee Cup by two lengths. While informal picnic race meetings were conducted at Werribee during the 1860s and early 1870s, it wasn’t until 1874 that a formal meeting was held at Wyndham Racecourse. In the 1880s, Victoria’s land boom collapsed leaving the colonies in financial stress. So too was the Wyndham Racing Club and during the Depression years of the 1890s the racecourse was neglected. It became infested by rabbits and home to swagmen. From 19001912 racing on the course was suspended.

In 1912, racing at Werribee was given a second chance with the formation of a new racing club, appointment of new trustees and a new act of Parliament to enable the Werribee Racing Club to function. The formation of the Werribee Racing Club breathed new life into the Wyndham racecourse. Racing eventually resumed at Werribee on March 30, 1915 and Werribee became known as a metropolitan club racing under the auspices of the Werribee Racing Club. The Werribee Racing Club’s iconic Werribee Cup grew in popularity and drew city crowds, cementing itself as an important feature on the racing calendar – and the region’s social calendar. The cup has attracted many well known winners over the years but none more famous than Melbourne Cup winners Even Stevens (1961) and the legendary Makybe Diva (2004, 2005 & 2006). This year the Werribee Cup has returned to spring to reclaim its place as an important provincial cup meeting in the Spring Racing Carnival.

Racing royalty Red Cadeaux can be described as racing’s “Gulliver”. The gelding has travelled the world in the past four years and has made an impression wherever he’s been. Along for the ride has been his affable English trainer Ed Dunlop, who says he can’t believe his luck at having such a quality, durable horse in his stable. Racing in eight countries and being the first international horse to run its fourth Melbourne Cup, Red Cadeaux is already racing royalty. Red Cadeaux was born in the UK in 2006 by Cadeaux Genereux, out of Artisia, and is trained by the Ed Dunlop stable. This attractive chestnut superstar is owned by Ronald Aculli and has won more than $7,369,494 in prize money. His most recent run was a second placing in the Emirates Melbourne Cup, finishing just short of fellow international winner Protectionist. This year was the third time Red Cadeaux had just missed out on a Melbourne Cup title – he came second in 2011 and 2013. He also fell just short in the 2013 Dubai World Cup. A titled winner in four races of his career so far, the $1,891,003 Hk Vase at Sha Tin on December 9, 2012 was one of his most significant wins. Jockey Gerald Mosse says Red Cadeaux’s best winning distance is between 2400 metres and 2800 metres and he is definitely a tough act to follow. With talent like this, Red Cadeaux is a name we will be hearing in the racing game for some time yet. Assistant trainer Robin Trevor-Jones said immediately following this year’s Melbourne Cup: “What a horse. I’m gutted but what a horse, he is an absolute superstar”. Come and see this superstar parade at the Werribee Cup on Thursday, November 20.
