Leading from the half-back line Michael Sodomaco will again captain the Werribee Football Club in his 10th year at Avalon Airport Oval. It looms as a very exciting year for the skipper on and off the field as he detailed on the BIG W Podcast: WFC captain 2021 Michael Sodomaco.
“2020 was like a footy gap year, doing nothing to do with footy, which was refreshing. In a really weird way it was nice to work out what was important, but in the end I missed training and getting around the guys. I was really keen to get back and now driving into the club you realise it could finish at any moment, so enjoy tonight and go from there. “The pre-season has been the new normal, to use a cliché. Pre Christmas, Choco (Williams) was still coaching, then he got the job at Melbourne and now Mick (Barlow) has been appointed and we are into a set routine. “2021 will be different with the new teams, the new format and the travel component. There are a few unknowns there, but why not aim for it all? We are bullish that we have got enough talent to challenge the best teams in the comp. So let’s put in the work and concentrate on that, have a crack at it and see how we go. You just don’t know when it’s going to be your last game. So let’s buck the trend of the one week at a time … what we are saying is we are here to have a crack at winning it all and if you are
not here saying that, if you are not here to try and do that, I question why you are here at all.” Seven years into the role as captain and Sodomaco has learnt a lot: “I think you get better the more you do it. I am a lot calmer than when I first was appointed. I am loving the teaching side of it, helping the young guys and driving the culture on game day.” He’s always the team player, but 2021 sees a few personal milestones on the horizon: “Touch wood I actually get to the 100 games. It is no certainty with my track record. That would be nice and we are expecting a baby around the same time as the hundredth rolls around if everything goes according to plan. “We’ve recruited well, we are looking strong on paper but the work is ahead of us. We will see how we go.”

Welcome back to Avalon Airport Oval to what we all hope will be a successful season, a full season and a pandemic-free season.
Empowering Business Success for over 30 years
Locals Proudly Supporting Locals. Good luck for season 2021.
The world has changed, the way we do things has changed, we as people have changed. Even the usual heightened expectation before a football season has changed. Everyone at Avalon Airport Oval is buzzing because footy is back. We all missed it, and I hope we never take for granted what a role it plays in our lives and in the community.
Go Werribee Tigers!
Winning games and premierships are ultimately what we all aspire to, but after our football gap year, just being involved – whether playing or barracking – feels pretty damn good.
cscg.com.au
The VFL competition has changed and we have embraced that change. We welcome the new challenges – interstate travel, changes to the game’s rules, different parameters to the composition of our playing list, a reduced salary cap. Not a problem. An opportunity.
President’s message
The club is committed to giving you the best match day experience possible. Some things will be different and at times that might be tedious, but it is a small price to pay to have the footy back and to have you back at Avalon Airport Oval. We have a new senior coach (Michael Barlow), many new faces proudly wearing the Big W and a new major sponsor – the CB Motor Group. The last bit is not entirely 100 per cent true – CB Motor Group is the new name of Ballan Holden. The bond between the Ballan family and the club dates back to the very beginnings of the club, but this is the 22nd consecutive year they have been our major sponsor. A truly remarkable reflection of the loyalty and commitment that is the hallmark of their business and their family. Enjoy the smell of the barbecue, the taste of your favourite beverage, the conjecture over the umpiring decisions and the cut and thrust of battle for the four points. The footy is back. Enjoy. Kicking goals in the community One of the biggest challenges of the COVID period was continuing our commitment to the community. Our team, led by Hamish MacInnes (pictured above), devised a series of interactive virtual programs that allowed them to keep connected with a wide variety of members of the Wyndham community. The programs brought fitness, football and fun activities via video which proved valuable in the darker days of the lockdown. Hamish, Mar Gattek (diversity manager) and Michael Barlow rose to the challenge and the reaction from council, schools and many community groups was very positive.
Billy Brownless for lunch One of the great characters of football is heading to Chirnsides by the River to share his love of the game and stories about the halcyon days of the great Cats era he played in. Ablett, Couch, Bews, Bairstow, Hocking, Blight and the greatest Grand Final of them all, 1989 – Billy will take you there in his own inimitable style. Werribee senior coach Michael Barlow will also be speaking and the lunch offers a unique networking opportunity. Bookings are available via the shop on the Werribee website: werribeefc.com.au
Thanks to the ongoing support of Pacific Werribee and CDC Buses, our community partners, our team has already returned physically to local schools and groups continuing the healthy living messages and introducing our unique game to many who have never experienced it first-hand. We are looking forward to welcoming the local Auskick centres back to Avalon Airport Oval to experience the thrill of being on the ground on match days. Later in the season we will once again showcase our essential service people and the vast multicultural influence in the City of Wyndham. The club has invested enormous time and resources over many years into various community programs and is proud of the outcomes it has delivered in both the health and fitness area and in promoting and introducing our Indigenous game to a broad range of Wyndham residents.

New major sponsor (not really) Loyalty is a trait not overlooked by either the Werribee Football Club or the Ballan family – in business or in life. The club is delighted that the Ballan family is again the major sponsor for 2021, making it 22 consecutive years. The business name has changed to CB Motor Group but the values and commitment to the local community and its people remain the same. Paul Ballan explained the new business on the BIG W podcast: “It is essentially the same business but we are rebranding to the CB Motor Group which is caravan, boating and motor vehicles. The only difference really is that we won’t be selling new
Holdens. Our parts and service departments remain the same. “The C is for caravan and we have JB Caravans which is an Australian-owned manufacturing company. With the boats, we have taken on Makocraft which is Australian-owned and made aluminum fishing boats and car toppers. We have also been able to upskill some of our staff into new areas with the caravans and boating. We are servicing caravans and boats as well as cars. “We are all very passionate about the football club and the relationship and we look forward to all the supporters coming down for a look at what we have to offer.”
