Message from the Senior Coach President’s message A new season brings new faces, new names to remember and new challenges to take on, but what isn’t new is the commitment, passion and desire required and demanded for the Werribee Football Club to remain amongst the elite in the premier second tier competition, the VFL. I can assure you that 2017 will be a watershed year in our club’s history, one in which we continue to embrace positive strategic changes, both on and off the field, with the desired outcome being a year in which we provide elements of supreme enjoyment for our sponsors, supporters, members, distinguished past players, officials, executives and administrators, not to mention our current coaches, players, support staff and volunteers. This year presents the promise of surprise as we enter a season on the road, having christened our team the Travelling Tigers. As we all know, a team that has youth, fitness

and true belief in itself can often achieve the unexpected, so our initial aspirations are to be competitive every time we take the field, combined with appearances in the month of September. I am pleased to report that the redevelopment of our state of the art pavilion at Avalon Airport Oval within the Chirnside Park precinct is expected to be completed late 2017 or early 2018, in adequate time for the commencement of the 2018 VFL season. As the premier football club of the City of Wyndham, we thrive on challenges and accordingly we invite you to become part of our family. Come to games, bring your friends, be vocal and parochial and cheer on your boys in the big W jumpers. Go Tigers! Martin Carter, president

2017 is my fourth season as senior coach of the Werribee Football Club and it will be like no other before it for me and the club. We have adopted the theme of the Travelling Tigers as we embrace various venues as our home away from home for match days. We have been fairly nomadic during our pre season, utilising Avalon Airport Oval, Arden Street, Glen Orden FC’s Heathdale Oval, and Price Reserve Werribee South plus groups at Bacchus Marsh, Corio, Eagle Stadium and North Melbourne Boxing and Fitness. We also had weekend camps at Torquay and Bacchus Marsh. We not only put miles into our legs but also our cars. We have a young group again this year after farewelling experienced club stalwarts like Scott Sherlock, Ben Speight and Jake Wilson, with close to 300 VFL games between them. Michael Sodomaco will captain the side again this year and he will be supported by Matt Hansen, Jake Sharp, Tom Gribble and Kurt Aylett. Our leadership group has already shown in the

pre season the qualities that our club needs to be successful in 2017. You never tick every box in the pre season, no-one does, but the coaching group and our strength and fitness team believe we are ready for the 2017 season. We face some challenges in the logistics of having a moving home ground, but nothing we can’t handle. We have spent some time training at Avalon Airport Oval and it is exciting watching our new home take shape. That is something to look forward to in the future. Bring on the 2017 season. There are no surprises. We know the draw, we know our opponents, and we know what we need to do: win football games, wherever they are played. That starts this Sunday at Avalon Airport Oval Torquay or as the locals call it, Spring Creek Reserve. We haven’t lost a game there and I hope to see you there this Sunday. Go Tigers. John Lamont, senior coach and White Tiger member #52

Games: 35 Goals: 54 Jumper number: 1. Nickname: Big Fella. I honestly can’t remember who gave it to me. Recruited from: I was at Geelong, and Bruce Montgomery and John Murphy contacted me. I was a little jaded by the travel to Geelong after work. I was going well in the Geelong seconds, but just not getting chances, so the timing was right. Senior debut: In 1984, I have no recollection of who we played but it was at Werribee. I remember doing OK, kicking a few goals, but thinking, “this is going to be a long season”. It was a tough day at the office. Most memorable game: One was versus Port Melbourne at Port. I was playing at centre half-back on Grant O’Reilly, a quality player. The Port coach made him stand next to the race all day except at ball-ups, so I couldn’t get into the game. I asked if I could move and was told no, so Grant and I just chatted all day. It rates as the weirdest day of footy I ever played.

Hair today, gone tomorrow Nathan Laracy has always been a man of few words, from the moment he strolled into Avalon Airport Oval back in 2010. He has always let his actions speak for him on the field and off it. That is why it is no surprise that he is making a personal sacrifice for the betterment of others in having his signature beard shaved off for charity. “Lara” was a fresh-faced teen when he first wore the big W, but it wasn’t until the 2014 season that the beard became standard attire. Its latest incarnation has been about 14 months in the making, but the owner – Werribee’s longest serving current player – is happy to see it to go. “I have always wanted to do something like this for charity and my housemates were very persuasive,” Nathan says. “Werribee Mercy Hospital does great work in the community so the chance to help them out seemed perfect. I am actually looking forward to it.” Unlike some people who give pet names to their facial hair, the popular Werribee No.19 is not in the least bit sentimental about the upcoming event. “It just sort of collects dust until I wash it,” he says. “So even though I have had this one for over a year, I won’t miss it. Probably my food will taste better.” All funds raised will go to the Werribee Mercy Hospital Critical Care Unit. Donate through the hospital website or at www.werribeefc.com.au. The shave will take place on Wednesday, April 26, at the Werribee Mercy Hospital with a special guest doing the honours.

Nickname: Grunter Games: 91 Goals: Too many to recall but some crackers in amongst them; officially 65. Recruited from: Footscray/Richmond by Michael Turner, who was senior coach in 1989. Jumper number: 13 Senior debut: 1989 Memory of that game: Getting a few nut crackers in the back of the head and “Sellsy” (Stephen Sells) stealing the ball out of my hands and saying, “Give me that Cameo”, before snapping a goal on his trusty left. Most memorable game: 1993 premiership by a country mile! Funniest recollection of your time: Winning games with the boys on the field and partying hard off the field. In particular, a couple of after closure, help-yourself drink sessions in the social club until Old “Turtle” (Greg Welsh) pulled us up. Your shout – who would it be? Nick Walsh aka the “Big Volkov”, Stephen Sells aka the “Mercurial One”, Daryl Taylor aka the “Big German” and Lynton Fitzpatrick aka the “Big Skipper”, and maybe “Turtle”, as he had the keys and security code for the social club. Life after Werribee: Continued to play/coach for another 10 years or so, new job, did the old sea-change and had a family. Other clubs: Airport West, West Footscray, Hoppers Crossing, Glenorden. Profession: Union organiser Family: Partner Casey and four beautiful kids – Eleanor, Georgia, James and Max. Home: Inverloch

Policing Enforcement Campaign Operation Nexus is a state-wide Police Road Policing Operation that forms part of the Easter campaign over the Easter holiday period. It aims to increase driver awareness and journey planning, while reducing road trauma during this high risk time. This 5 day Road Policing Enforcement Campaign will run from Thursday 13th April to Monday 17th April, 2017 Westgate Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Jason Templar said this operation will be conducted throughout all operational Police Regions and Police Service Areas during the five days, using all available personnel from local road policing units, general duties and other regional resources. Victoria Police will implement a strategically co-ordinated and tactically focused approach to Road Policing targeting the key contributing factors to road trauma being Speed, Alcohol and Drug Impairment, Driver Distraction, Fatigue and Seatbelts. Motorists are requested to stay within the speed limit, don’t drink alcohol or take drugs and drive, leave your mobile phone out of reach, wear your seatbelt and make sure you are well rested. Fatigue is one of the biggest killers on Victorian roads. Drivers are requested to plan their trip, be patient and ensure that you take at least a 15 minutes break at least every two hours and don’t drive if you are tired.

have to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis, to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to loved ones. All of the community has a responsibility and a role to play in reducing road trauma. Remember, travel safety so that you arrive at your destination safely and enjoy your Easter Holiday weekend RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council Chairman Mr Jim Giddings said it has been demonstrated time after time that speed is a contributing factor in most road crashes. Therefore stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions you face.

DRIVING IS NOT A GAME! SPEED KILLS!

Speeding affects both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen. Mr Giddings said the work of his group along with initiatives like the Operation Nexus during the 2017 Easter Holiday period would hopefully reduce the number of serious road crashes on our roads. He asked the community to report speeding drivers to Crime stoppers number 1800 333 000

Drivers planning to travel during this period can expect to see an increase in vehicles travelling on our major Freeways and Highways throughout the State.

Holiday driving has its challenges and drivers should drive in the hours they are normally awake, take regular breaks to reduce fatigue and allow extra space between vehicles. Drivers need to adapt to the conditions of the road, the onus is always on the driver to suit the conditions they are facing, and that includes the quality of the road.

Road trauma isn’t just about the people who die – it’s about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members, to the emergency services workers who

If you plan to have a drink then plan not to drive, taking a big risk like drink and driving is just not worth endangering your live or other road users.

Don’t make a Grave Mistake

Speed is the largest single factor in fatal road crashes on our roads. RoadSafe Westgate and your local council support reporting speeding drivers to Crime Stoppers.

Building a new home It’s a new era for Chirnside Park with the major redevelopment of the Avalon Airport Oval. The building of a state-of-the-art facility is under way at a cost of $11.75 million and is due to be completed by the end of 2017. Understanding what future-focused sporting organisations, associated businesses and community groups want for optimum performance was the cornerstone for designing a multifunctional environment in one of Australia’s fastest developing growth corridors.

Here are just some of the many facilities available in this ultra modern complex:

The location is ideal, as it is right next to the picturesque Werribee River, yet within easy access of the Werribee business district.

Our community connection Werribee Football Club’s community team will be actively involved in a number of programs and initiatives in Wyndham during 2017. One exicitng program will take players and staff into more than 30 local schools. Programs are developed and delivered in conjunction with our AFL partner, North Melbourne Football Club, covering during and after school programs, multicultural school programs, coaching seminars, mentor programs, after school Auskick centres, half-time Auskick, player appearances, Wyndham events and themed game-day experiences. The club will continue to support the growth of female and multicultural participation in football with the establishment of free after-school Auskick centres, plus an all-girls Auskick centre to be run at Avalon Airport Oval. To complement these initiatives, the club will again have a diversity squad to target talented multicultural

and indigenous youngsters aged 15 to 18 years. This 10-week program is based around skill development and education sessions. As the season unfolds, the club will be offering coaching seminars and there will be player appearances at local clubs. A Welcome to Wyndham themed day will be held during the round 4, May 7 match against Casey Demons at Hogan’s Reserve, Hoppers Crossing, home of the Hoppers Crossing Warriors. This is just part of the club’s commitment to community programs, made possible through the support of community partners CDC Victoria and Cervus Equipment.
