Youth jobless rate declines
By Laura Michell A new $1 billion development at Wyndham Vale is being hailed as part of a “suburb of the futureâ€? by Planning Minister Matthew Guy. Mr Guy launched Lend Lease’s 435-hectare Harpley estate on Black Forest Road last Thursday, saying it would provide houses for about 12,000 residents. The estate will be built over the next 12 years. As reported by Star Weekly, the development was given the green light in July after the state government approved a $533 million developer contribution plan for Wyndham’s west. The plan outlined contributions that will be made by Wyndham council, the government and developers to fund key infrastructure in the area. Plans for Harpley include 4000 new houses, transport links, community facilities, more than 60 hectares of lakes and wetlands, a waterfront town centre, and three schools. The estate will have direct access from the Princes Freeway via Armstrong Road and a bridge over the railway line, easing congestion on Cottrell Street. “Harpley will be part of a suburb of the future that is within a commutable distance of a major employment precinct [at East Werribee],â€? Mr Guy said. “This is a place for Melbourne’s future ‌ this is a new suburb for families.â€? Wyndham mayor Bob Fairclough said the inclusion of two primary schools and a secondary school in the estate was a win for Wyndham families. “We’re struggling as a council to keep pace with population growth in Wyndham,’’ he said. ‘‘Last week, I met with 50 school

principals, who made it clear that education resources were struggling. We simply don’t have enough schools.� Lend Lease state communities general manager Neil O’Connor said Harpley would have amenities to help people live a happy and healthy lifestyle.
“We’ve already partnered with ‌ Wyndhamvale Football Club and Werribee Football Club and we’re excited to watch them grow and succeed over the next few years alongside Harpley,â€? he said. Stage one of the development will include the wetlands and a cultural park.
Melbourne’s west has bucked the youth unemployment trend by recording a drop of almost 3 per cent. Australia Bureau of Statistics figures show youth unemployment rates in the region, which includes the Brimbank, Melton, Wyndham, Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay council areas, dropped from a 12-month average of 16.4 per cent in July, 2013, to 13.5 per cent this July. However, the Brotherhood of St Lawrence said it had analysed the ABS’s Victorian figures for ages 15 to 24 and found there had been a rise in jobless youth numbers in most regions. The organisation found the average unemployment rate in the age range in the year to July was 13.8 per cent – up from 12.3 per cent a year earlier. Michael Wasley, general manager of jobs search company Matchworks, said it was likely youth unemployment in Wyndham had fallen as a result of population changes, with the raw numbers of youth unemployed remaining stable. “We still have high numbers of job seekers on our books.� Mr Wasley said young people looking for work could boost their prospects by showing prospective employers they had good communication skills and a good work ethic. “Employers aren’t necessarily looking for someone with the qualifications to do a job but rather someone who can do what they’re asked to do.� Laura Michell and Lexi Cottee

Cr Khan maintains he “didn’t see” the 2014 advertisement and when asked whether he saw the 2013 advertisement before it went to print, he said: “I don’t remember.” Alwasat editor-in-chief Fawaz Chawk confirmed both advertisements were “free greetings” to mark Ramadan. Mr Chawk said Cr Khan requested last year’s greeting, but this year’s was “automatically” placed in the newspaper. “We did the design, we took the logo from the council website,” he said. “We send [sic] (the 2014 advertisement) to him when it was finished.” The resident who has made the complaint maintains Cr Khan has “serious questions to answer”. Wyndham council only became aware of the advertisements on Monday. Council chief executive Kerry Thompson said the council did not authorise use of its logo. “I can comment with certainty that no council funds or resources were used,” she said. “Councillors found to be misusing their position for personal gain could constitute a breach of section 76D of the Local Government Act 1989. Council understands that Local Government Victoria has been made aware of this matter and we will provide full co-operation to the inspectorate to ensure any potential breaches of the act are fully investigated.”

What do you love about Wyndham? The cultural diversity of the people and their food. I’m eating food I wasn’t 32 years ago, including Thai, Korean and African. There’s also lots of young families in the area and retirement villages being built, so there’s a great range of ages in the community.

The principal of a school with about 1700 students, a local Rotarian and loving grandma, Julie Mason knows a thing or two about the people of Wyndham, writes Rebecca Miller. What’s your connection to the local community? I’m principal of Baden Powell College and have lived in Wyndham for 32 years, including the last four in Sanctuary Lakes. Prior to that I lived in Werribee. I’ve been a member of Wyndham Rotary for the past 20 years. As of July next year I will be the district governor, which means I will be supporting 71 Rotary clubs in Victoria. I will visit each club and provide guidance and support to them. I love being involved with Rotary. I get to catch up with 25 to 30 friends every Wednesday night. Being a member is an amazing experience. We provide weekend camps for young people and I am involved in programs including Early Act for primary students and Interact for 12-18 year olds. Those involved in these programs meet fortnightly and take part in school, community and international projects to improve the community and learn the value of volunteering. Programs include making an anti-bullying DVD for schools, visiting a local preschool and reading books to the children, and fund-raising for a new school in Cambodia to provide uniforms, books and other resources.

I love taking my two grandsons to the beach at Werribee South and to Point Cook Coastal
Park. I also love the history of the [Werribee] mansion. Where’s your favourite place to get coffee or a bite to eat? Waterstone Café at Sanctuary Lakes. It’s peaceful, the food and entertainment is fantastic – the chicken parmigiana is beautiful. Ferguson Plarre in Sanctuary Lakes makes the best cappuccino.

Hyperthyroid disease of elderly cats Hyperthyroidism is a disease of older cats caused by excessive production of thyroid hormone. The cause is usually a benign overactive thyroid gland located in the neck area and is seen in cats mostly 10 years of age or older. Thyroid hormone has particular roles in metabolism and iodine storage. While dogs tend to suffer from hypothyroidism, or low thyroid levels, cats are generally the opposite. After diabetes mellitus, hyperthyroidism is the second most common hormonal disease in cats. Signs of hyperthyroidism include hyperactivity, weight loss despite a
ravenous appetite, increased thirst and urination, frequent crying, poor grooming and a rapid heartbeat. If left untreated, disease can lead to heart failure, emaciation and death. Diagnosis involves a simple blood test performed by a vet and there are good treatment options. The ideal form of treatment is via a single dose of radioactive-iodine given as an oral capsule. This is given under the supervision of a veterinary specialist in hospital but is safe and has excellent permanent results. An alternative treatment is an ongoing twice daily anti-thyroid tablet or, in cats that are very difficult to pill, a gel applied to their ears. Ongoing regular blood and urine tests are required to monitor this treatment.

Dear Everyone, Looking back, maybe our fast and winning finish to season 2013 gave us a sense of optimism and inevitability for a further ladder climb in 2014. Maybe the competition got better. Maybe 2014 showed the growing pains that are unavoidable and unpredictable for a young side on the move. But no explanation provides much comfort as we assume our all-too-familiar position at the top of the bottom quartile of the AFL ladder for season 2014. There’s been so much hard work by so many good people that it hurts to sit here this morning and write reflections on another season that was just not good enough. So while I wish the players well on their Mad Monday, truth is, it’s a mad Monday for me, too … a different kind of mad. This morning, we begin a review of football operations that will be characterised by brutal honesty. No one comes in to footy seeking out mediocrity. I know I didn’t resume the position of president at the Western Bulldogs prepared to accept year after year of unfulfilled promise. This year was not good enough. I will get better and work harder for our club. That’s my promise to you. It’s also my expectation of each and every one of you. Thanks to all our members and fans who helped us out this year. Thanks to everyone who made it such a huge and successful day for the return of blockbuster footy at the Whitten Oval on Sunday. Good luck to our young Footscray side in the next month as it battles for VFL honours. And thanks to the people of Star Weekly for the opportunity I have had this year to write for our many western region fans.

t’s funny how quickly life goes. The six years since I got to the Western Bulldogs have whizzed by at the speed of light. I still remember my little brother as a 12-year-old kid, a little smart arse who was just a child. I haven’t lived with him for six years but every day I see him now he reminds me of myself. He has the same mannerisms and everyone comments on how similar we look. Mum and dad have obviously produced two very similar children. He’s 17 now and he’s a young man. It’s funny when you suddenly realise he is no longer the little kid you remember. What impresses me most is that he has become a man in his own right but at the same time is very much another Cordy and is very similar to the rest of the family. He’s dealing with a lot of pressure right now, year 12 exams and the pressure of potentially being drafted, and it brings back a lot of memories. He’s handling it really well, he’s still enjoying life and still smiling and I’m very proud of him. Whatever the next step of his journey, if he gets drafted or not, I would love to take him under my wing and look after him. He’s his own person though and he’ll find his way on his own path. The last thing he wants is to be seen as my little brother or my dad’s son, I think that’s the best part about him. He’s very family-oriented and unselfish and whether he ends up in the AFL or not, he will still make our family very proud.
