Modelling by Victoria University’s Centre of Policy Studies also suggested it would create about 2000 jobs. WoMEDA deputy chair VU vice-chancellor Peter Dawkins said a new state-of-the-art Footscray Hospital on the campus would create opportunities for a major development. “It would mean creating a world class asset in Footscray, built around an employment and jobs cluster and the synergies between community health, private health and R&D in health, sport and active living, which Victoria University excels in.” WoMEDA has identified the Australian Education City as a lynchpin for essential jobs and infrastructure growth, integrating education, research, business, arts, culture and housing. Food and drink manufacturing is seen as another strong growth area, along with the rapidly expanding logistics industry.

Punters saddle up for some fun The sun was shining and champagne flowed on Sunday when thousands descended on the Werribee Racecourse for the annual Werribee Cup. Punters dressed up, drank up and had a flutter at the eight-race meet, enjoying a nail-biting photo finish for the big race, with Kylie Vella-trained horse Aeratus taking out the cup by the barest of margins. Werribee Racing Club general manager Glenn Scott said crowd numbers had steadily increased since the Werribee Cup was permanently moved to December three years ago. ■ More pictures: Pages 10-11

Werribee could become one of the nation’s leading education and logistics powerhouses and drive the creation of thousands of new jobs in Wyndham, according to an ambitious new strategy. Former Victorian premier Steve Bracks is chairing a new alliance working to create 25,000 new jobs by transforming Werribee, Sunshine and Footscray into major employment centres. The West of Melbourne Economic Development Alliance (WoMEDA), launched last Wednesday, is pushing for more state government investment in the rapidly growing region. Mr Bracks said the alliance wants to build on the area’s businesses and industry strengths, while targeting job and skills growth towards expanding industries such as health and education. Mr Bracks told Star Weekly that Werribee is primely positioned to become a nationally significant education and logistics hub. He said that bringing the west up to the same employment and participation levels as the rest of Melbourne would add 25,000 workers and $3 billion to the state’s economy. “We can help do this by investing in health and education, that would help significantly in creating jobs in the area.” The Plan Melbourne Implementation Plan 2017 has identified Werribee as a place of state significance for establishing National Employment and Innovation Clusters. “The cluster is currently home to around 8400 jobs and could ultimately support more than 50,000 predominantly white-collar jobs

in health, education and high-tech research,” it stated. Building a new Footscray Hospital on Victoria University’s Footscray Park campus is another key element of the plan. “WoMEDA believes that co-location with Victoria University would create the opportunity for a major health precinct which would have profound impact on the community,” Mr Bracks said.
