Tuck into truck festival Williams Landing will become a foodie haven this week when Melbourne’s best food trucks come to town.

The Williams Landing Food Truck Carnival will run from Thursday to Sunday and include a rotation of 30 food trucks, including Senor Churro, White Guy Cooks Thai, Roadrunner Fried Chicken, Jay’s Yogurt, Big Smoke BBQ, Sliders on Tyres and Squires Loft Express. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options are available.

Foodies can also enjoy carnival rides, a fully licensed bar and music and there will be children’s games and activities as part of the festival.

Carlo Paduano from the Food Truck Carnival Co. said more than 35,000 people attended last year’s inaugural event and organisers were hoping to improve on that figure this year.

The food truck carnival will be at Williams Landing Shopping Centre, 100 Overton Road, from 5-10pm on January 18-19, noon-10pm on January 20, and noon-9pm on January 21.

Police numbers decline

By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham has less police on the beat now than it did in September of 2015, despite soaring population.

Wyndham police numbers have fluctuated in the past three years, according to figures supplied by the state opposition.

There were 88.03 full-time equivalent (FTE) police stationed in the area in November, 2014.

Wyndham’s police numbers jumped up to 120.97 FTE by September, 2015, but the most recent figures show a decline in staffing numbers, with 106.34 FTE police in September last year.

In comparison, there are 173.16 FTE police

officers stationed in Brimbank despite the area having a smaller population.

Wyndham, Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay also share 220 FTE police across the crime investigation unit, sexual offences and child abuse investigation team, highway patrol and other divisional resources.

In a statement, Victoria Police said Wyndham was in the midst of receiving 27 new police, with the final officers to be in place by April. Another 10 have been allocated to the crime investigation unit and sexual offences and child abuse investigations teams.

“Whilst it may seem that police officers allocated to the Wyndham police service area (PSA) have fluctuated in previous years, this

is accounted for by specialist units, including the highway patrol and the crime investigation units, previously having been included in PSA figures, whereas they are now counted against the broader division,” the statement read.

Victoria Police did not confirm when specialist unit police were removed from PSA figures.

Wyndham council’s safer communities portfolio holder Kim McAliney said it was no secret Wyndham police were “being placed under enormous pressure” by rapid population growth.

“Without a doubt, we need more frontline police in Wyndham so that their visibility, effectiveness and, above all, response times

can be improved,” Cr McAliney said. “Recent discussions with Police Minister Lisa Neville and Victoria Police leadership have made us confident that more police will be allocated to Wyndham in the near future.”

Police Association secretary Wayne Gatt said Wyndham was understaffed.

“The best way to ensure the policing needs of the community in Wyndham are met is through the introduction of minimum staffing levels,” he said.

The state government did not respond to Star Weekly’s request for comment by deadline.

Wyndham’s a top auction option

By Alesha Capone Three Wyndham suburbs have been listed in Victoria’s top areas for auctions sales last year.

The Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV) has released a list of the state’s hotspots for auction sales growth during 2017.

Sunbury topped the list with 189 auction sales in 2017 (compared to 23 the previous 12 months), which amounts to a 721 per cent growth. Werribee was second with 263 auction sales last year (compared to 52 in 2016), an increase of 405 per cent.

Point Cook was third with a 183 per cent growth in auction sales, with 150 sales (compared to 53 the previous 12 months).

Hoppers Crossing placed fifth on the REIV list with 314 auction sales (118 in 2016), a 166 per cent growth.

During 2017, there were 225 real estate auctions held in Sunbury, 326 auctions in Werribee, 183 in Point Cook and 370 in Hoppers Crossing, with all areas recording clearances of more than 80 per cent.

Overall, there were 11,615 auctions in Melbourne’s outer suburbs last year, with 9025

resulting in a sale (compared to 8629 auctions and 6516 sales in 2016).

Hockingstuart Werribee senior sales consultant Samantha McCarthy said there was “still a strong demand” for homes within Werribee, Point Cook and Hoppers Crossing, “… largely due to affordability along with increased infrastructure and future infrastructure plans”.

“From what we can see so far and over the Christmas break, we can’t see it quietening down at this stage, we still see a shortage of homes and demand for property,” she said.

Two students from the Werribee Gymnastics Club have been rewarded for their hard work and dedication, after taking part in a statewide competition.

Charli Sette and Ruth Ong, both 11 years old, train for nine hours a week.

Last year, the young gymnasts competed in the Women’s Junior Southern Cross Classic at Geelong Arena.

Ruth wowed the judges with her favourite apparatus, the vault.

She scored an impressive 9.7 out of 10 points for her performance in this section of competition, earning the title of level 5 (Under 12) Victorian Vault Champion.

Out of the 74 gymnasts who competed in the event, Ruth placed 20th overall and Charli placed 23rd.

Charli also came 13th in the floor division.

Werribee Gymnastics Club manager Tenielle Love said that both Charli and Ruth worked extremely hard and had great attitudes towards their training.

“We are very proud of their progress so far and cannot wait to see what they continue to achieve this year in level 6,” she said.

The club’s competitive co-ordinator Ebony Biden said the club held classes suitable for both girls and boys, from children through to adults.

Ms McCarthy said other parts of Wyndham, including Tarneit, Truganina, Wyndham Vale, Manor Lakes and Williams Landing, were also popular with people looking to buy an affordable property.

“All areas are definitely still up there on the search criteria for buyers searching in the outer west,” she said.

Wyndham council is calling on home owners and renters to check and maintain their balconies after two people lost their lives following a balcony collapse.

Cr Kim McAliney, the council’s safer communities portfolio holder, said things to look out for included rotting or loose structural items, creaking or flexibility in joists or beams, loose or rusted brackets and fixings, bowing or cracking of timber, placement of heavy items and overloading, and cracks to concrete or shifting brickwork.

Two people died and 17 others were taken to hospital last month after a balcony collapsed at a Doncaster East house party.

The accident has prompted calls from building surveyors to change laws and introduce mandatory balcony inspections.

Cr McAliney said the accident should serve as a reminder to all home owners or renters to ensure their balconies or decks were safe and make regular checks.

“Balconies and decks are common in Wyndham, and with no regulated inspection requirements, the responsibility is on the owner to ensure they are maintained and kept safe,” she said.

“If you are getting repairs done to your balcony, you should make sure you use a registered building practitioner or structural engineer.”

Indian push for Tarneit

By Charlene Macaulay A band of residents is calling on the state government to consider Tarneit as the location for Wyndham’s long-awaited Indian cultural precinct.

The Wyndham Indian Culture Precinct Action Committee believes Wyndham Village Shopping Centre would be the ideal location for the precinct, with Indian restaurants, grocery stores and the like already creating an informal Indian hub.

The suggestion comes a month after Wyndham council recommended that a multicultural sculpture and performing arts park be constructed at President’s Park in Wyndham Vale for the Indian cultural precinct following a feasibility study. The report’s findings come two years after the state government allocated $50,000 for Wyndham council to conduct a study into an Indian precinct and $500,000 for construction. The report will go to Multicultural Affairs Minister Robin Scott for consideration.

But committee president Sonika Sha said President’s Park had no existing Indian culture and was not an appropriate site. “We should not use that park for any particular community, because a park should be for everybody using it,� she said. “A precinct represents a certain culture – in Tarneit, we have a large Indian population. “It doesn’t make sense to us, why [President’s Park] was chosen.�

Wyndham councillor Intaj Khan, who also believes the precinct should be based in Tarneit, said the consultation process had been poorly run and should have been advertised through local and Indian media, not just the council’s website. He said President’s Park was not a true reflection of Indian culture.

“If you go to Chinatown, you can get Chinese food, Chinese clothes,� he said. “In Lygon Street, you can get pasta and pizza.�

A petition calling for the precinct to be located in Tarneit has so far attracted more than 130 signatures. For more information, go to bit.ly/2Digf7m.

Road blitz results shock More than 650 offences were detected on Wyndham’s roads over the silly season.

Results from road policing operation, Operation Roadwise, reveal Westgate Highway Patrol nabbed 189 drivers using their mobile phone while behind the wheel during the 24-day operation, which started on December 15 and ran until January 7.

Police also detected 107 seatbelt offences, 84 speeding offences, 67 unlicensed drivers and 37 disqualified or suspended drivers behind the wheel, 40 drivers who disobeyed road signs or traffic lights, 34 drink drivers and four drug drivers. Twelve cars were also impounded during the operation.

Statewide, a total 31,293 offences were recorded as part of Operation Roadwise, with speeding accounting for a third of all offences.

Victoria Police Assistant Commission Doug Fryer said he was disappointed that six people had lost their life on our roads in the first week of 2018. “To lose six people so early in the New Year is nothing short of tragic,� he said. “That’s six families for which 2018 has become the worst year of their lives before it has barely started.�

RoadSafe Westgate’s annual report stated that 15 people were killed on the west’s roads and 895 people were injured – including 214 seriously injured – in 910 road collisions across the Westgate division in 2016-17.

A Christian school has amended its uniform policy after being found to have discriminated against a young Sikh boy because he wore a turban.

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal in September found Melton Christian College breached the Equal Opportunity Act by not allowing Sidhak Singh Arora, then aged five, to attend the school wearing a patka, or children’s turban.

A joint statement by Sidhak’s parents and the school says the uniform policy has been amended “to allow exceptions where

genuine medical or religious grounds exist”.

“MCC regrets the difficulties that took place with respect to the enrolment and the family is grateful to the school for the amendments it has made to the uniform policy in order to welcome Sidhak to the school,” the statement read.

Sidhak’s parents, Sagardeep Singh Arora and Anureet Kaur Arora, tried in 2016 to enrol their son at the school before the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission intervened in the case. The Aroras still wanted Sidhak to attend the Melton Christian College

because it was close to home and where Sidhak’s cousins studied.

During the VCAT hearing, the school argued its decision was lawful under exemptions to the Equal Opportunity Act. VCAT ordered the parents and school to negotiate an arrangement to resolve the situation.

The ruling found “MCC’s uniform policy, in so far as it prohibits head gear of a non-Christian faith, could be described as ‘openly discriminatory’.”

School backs down on patka ban

Saddle up for festival Don’t walk or run, but gallop to the 11th annual Clydesdale and Heavy Horse Festival this weekend.

The event, which is affiliated with the Commonwealth Clydesdale Horse Society (CCHS), will be held at the Werribee Park National Equestrian Centre on Saturday and Sunday.

CCHS Victoria branch committee member Barb Ford said this year’s festival would celebrate a century since the society was established Ms Ford said her father bred Clydesdale horses and supplied many horses to the Metropolitan Dairy in Werribee. Nowadays, Ms Ford breeds Clydesdales in Diggers Rest.

She will show two steeds, a four-year-old mare and a yearling filly, at the festival.

“They’ve pretty much all got their own character and individuality,” Ms Ford said.

“You feel the horses love you back, but I’m

not sure if the fact you feed them also plays a major part!”

solemnly swear that what you are about to read has been written by Kevin Hillier. I have not been kidnapped, nor have I been hit on the head by a random coconut on my holidays at the seaside resort of Inverloch.

The following is from my own hand. Well, fingers.

Hats off to the Wyndham council who have refused to allow the 2018 Australia Day celebrations to be hijacked. That is a very gutsy stand given the current climate of political correctness.

Its press release stated: “Wyndham City Council recognises Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Custodians of the lands on which Australia was founded.

We are proud to welcome communities from all cultures and backgrounds to this event to celebrate our national pride and what it means to be Australian.”

No one is being excluded or forgotten, no one is being racially slurred or vilified, no one is being disadvantaged, and no one denied their heritage.

While I am sure there will be many who will find fault and expect Wyndham council to follow other local governments into abandoning any celebration of January 26, I applaud their plan.

In a sea of personal agendas, scheming political manipulation, ego driven ambition and plain old stupidity, this simple, transparent, almost folksy invitation shines like a beacon.

Live music, a kid’s zone, fireworks, food trucks, movies, classic cars, water slides … who doesn’t love all that stuff? And all to be enjoyed regardless of race, religion, sexual preference, political persuasion, socio economic or education standing. What a concept.

It is about time some of those in power and those who shape public opinion took off their serious pants for five minutes and appreciated what we have and celebrate it.

Good on you Wyndham council for leading the way. Happy Australia Day. ■

Robbery arrest

Police arrested a man following an alleged attempted armed robbery at a liquor store in Altona North last Wednesday. It is alleged the 48-year-old man, of no fixed address, went to the Millers Road bottle shop just after noon and demanded cash, but fled empty-handed. The man was charged with a count of attempted armed robbery and a count of armed robbery relating to an alleged robbery at a service station on the Princes Highway, Werribee, on January 7.

Assault witness call

Police are searching for three men who allegedly assaulted a victim in Truganina on March 23 last year.

About 9.50pm, the victim was walking along Clearwood Drive when three men demanded cash and property before assaulting the victim. The men fled after being unsuccessful in obtaining the victim’s property.

Not many kids can call themselves business owners or entrepreneurs at the age of 11, but Kai Seymon is an exception.

The Hoppers Crossing resident has taken advantage of the fidget craze with a burgeoning business of his own, called Kaiko Fidgets.

But it wasn’t the popularity of the hand-held concentration aids that got him into the business.

Kai has auditory processing difficulties and dyslexia, which makes it “doubly difficult” for him to process information, according to his mother, Joanne.

“When he had trouble, he’d tend to tap on the table or fidget, or make noises and distract other kids in class.

“We tried … all sorts of things to try and help him stay focused.”

Kai bought a small fidget made of bike chains in New Zealand, but after not being able to find anything similar in Australia, he decided to make his own. He now sells the homemade fidgets at craft markets across Victoria and has sold about 500 in six months – earning roughly $5000.

“I’m saving up for a China trip,” Kai said.

True to his spirit, he wants to learn about importing and business overseas.

“When I grow up, I want to be a business man,” he said.

“It feels like I’m the coolest kid in school.”

Ms Seymon said the business has transformed her son.

“He often has said to me, he feels stupid or dumb, but for the first time in his life, he actually feels successful and that he’s achieving something.”

Kai in a spin over business success

A star-studded line-up of performers will headline a month of live music, movies and food at Werribee’s very own pop-up park.

ARIA award-winner Anthony Callea will return to his home town this Friday to kick off the Station Place pop-up park, which will run from January 19 to February 25 as a free outdoor space for locals and visitors to kick back and relax.

Throughout the week, the park will open at 9am and offer visitors opportunities to bask in deck chairs or beanbags, enjoy a picnic or play jumbo lawn games such as chess and jenga.

On Friday nights, the pop-up park will feature a line-up of artists ranging from Callea to Nathaniel and festival favourite Lior.

On Saturday nights, the park will be transformed into an outdoor cinema, complete with beanbags, popcorn and free double bills including 5pm kids flicks and 7.30pm cult classics.

Stitch in time for charity

By Charlene Macaulay A women’s auxiliary that meets each week to knit has raised more than $150,000 in the past six years for the Royal Children’s Hospital.

The Werribee Ladies for Kids Auxiliary has helped the Royal Children’s fund a new ultrasound machine, a music therapy program for adolescents and a study into using fluoxetine for children with autism.

Treasurer Heather Brett said the group of 20, – which meets each Thursday to knit, chat and enjoy afternoon tea – started about six years

ago out of her Hoppers Crossing home.

The group later moved its meeting spot to Heathglen Retirement Village to make it easier for some of the attendees.

“Not everybody lives here, we have all these others come in,” she said. “We just sit and chat, have the best afternoon teas ever.”

The women use their crafty skills to knit and sew doll clothes, baby clothes, coat hangers, tea cosies and blankets, which are then sold at monthly stalls at the RCH and shopping centre markets. Ms Brett also makes jam.

Ms Brett said football clothing proved very popular among customers.

“You can do beanies, rugs, jumpers, dolls, whatever – if it’s in footy colours, it goes.”

Ms Brett said the group was extremely grateful for the many donations of wool and other items to help their fundraising efforts.

Member Daphne Holden said the group was one of the best things she’d ever been part of.

“It’s not just knitting. If you’re feeling a bit lonely, you can come and have a cup of tea.”

A Manor Lakes landlord has been ordered to pay compensation of more than $3500 to a former tenant, after months of failing to fix a mould-infested bedroom and bathroom.

Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal member Margaret Harvey ordered Carl Calabro to pay his former tenant a total of $3535.32, including $1270.32 for breaching his duty by failing to undertake urgent repairs at the rented premises. Ms Harvey also ordered Mr Calabro to pay his former tenant $2205 for moving costs.

The tribunal heard that shortly after the tenant moved into the three-bedroom property in May 2016, she told the landlord’s agent about mould in the bathroom and adjoining bedroom.

In the following months, the tenant lodged several written requests asking for action to address the issue because the mould was affecting her health.

Ms Harvey said that after February 19 last year, the tenant could no longer sleep in her bedroom due to the mould, so she moved into another bedroom.

In April, Consumer Affairs inspected the premises and confirmed the presence of mould. Ms Harvey said that rather than fixing the problem, Mr Calabro ordered the tenant to vacate the house.

Ms Harvey said that Mr Calabro “… has behaved with blatant disregard for the tenant’s rights and his duty under the Residential Tenancies Act”.

Australian-born main offenders

By Alesha Capone Police made more than 4600 arrests in Wyndham across a 12-month period, with the majority of offenders being born in Australia, New Zealand or Sudan.

Data from the state’s Crime Statistics Agency shows that between October, 2016, and September last year police made a total of 4666 arrests in Wyndham, compared to 4611 arrests in the previous 12 months.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said although there were 4666 arrests, that did not

mean there were 4666 offenders – one person arrested multiple times would be counted multiple times.

“It’s also unclear as to whether or not these offenders live and reside in Wyndham or are from other areas,” the spokeswoman said.

Out of all the arrests in Wyndham during the period, police recorded the offender’s country of birth as Australia more than half of the time (2897 arrests, compared to 3135 in the previous 12 months).

For another 395 arrests, the offender’s birthplace was recorded as New Zealand

(compared to 424 in the previous 12 months).

Police recorded Sudan as the birthplace for 199 arrestees (compared to 139 in the previous 12 months).

According to last year’s Australian census, there are 7714 people who were born in New Zealand living in Wyndham and 1184 people who were born in Sudan.

The Victoria Police spokeswoman said while the number of youth offenders born in African countries remains stable in Wyndham, Victoria Police has acknowledged that the community faces an issue with young people from African

backgrounds being “overly represented” in violent youth crime.

“We know there’s a small group of offenders, around 200 to 300, who have been responsible for serious and violent offending … police have been working hard to tackle the issue,” she said.

“This includes identifying those responsible for these incidents, making arrests and putting them before the courts.”

South Sudan became a country in 2011 but police and census data provided to Star Weekly did not distinguish between Sudan and South Sudan.

Petition strikes a nerve A petition calling on stricter bail laws and more powers for police has received an overwhelming response from the community.

Concerned by escalating crime against local residents and police, Tarneit resident Arnav Sati said he felt compelled to act, so last week started an online petition calling on the state government to implement an immediate change to bail laws, hold the justice system to account regarding repeat offenders released on bail and give police more power to control violent offenders.

The petition has amassed more than 15,500 signatures since going live.

Mr Sati, who has lived in the western suburbs for the past 18 years, said he had never felt so unsafe. He believes the current justice system is encouraging repeat offenders and shows no respect to victims of crime.

“We’re promoting a culture where there is no consequence for a crime,” he said. “We’re

being too soft. The situation was never [as bad] as this – this is an emerging crisis, and the people in power, the people who can actually do something, they’re just sitting.

“I am living in fear. I have to think about my safety when I go on the street, go to the local parks, walk home from the train station.

“It is not actually about a particular race or religion. Whether it’s an Aussie teenager of any background, whether it’s a person on a resident visa of any background or age – if someone does something, they should know there’s a consequence, and they should be punished for it.”

Mr Sati said that since starting the petition, he had had many victims of crime from across the western suburbs sharing their ordeals with him.

Taskforce to tackle youth crime

By Charlene Macaulay An African-Australian community taskforce has been established to work with police to address youth crime and anti-social behaviour.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton announced last week the volunteer-run taskforce, which includes Richard Deng and Kot Monoah from the South Sudanese Community Association of Victoria, would directly support the police and community by: • Providing information to police on emerging issues and hot spots;

• Establishing a more efficient channel for police to engage with African-Australian leaders and provide advice on how they can best deploy their people and help to prevent youth crimes and anti-social behaviour occurring; and • Providing police with information on incidents of racial vilification and other hate crimes aimed at African Australians.

Mr Ashton said he had sat down with senior members of the African Australian community to try and understand what had changed in recent weeks to cause the escalation of public

disorder offences by groups of African youths, particularly across the Wyndham area.

“The vast majority of law abiding members of the African Australian community are hurting as well. They very much want to be part of providing solutions to that, and I think this taskforce is a good approach.”

On Sunday, South Sudanese community leaders joined police on patrol at Tarneit Central Shopping Centre.

“The joint patrol is just one of the ways that police are working with the community hand-in-hand to address the criminal

behaviour that we’ve seen recently,” Wyndham police Acting Inspector Peter Bitton said.

Deputy Commissioner Andrew Crisp said he had been disturbed to learn that a number of African Australians had been subjected to death threats and other racial vilification.

Mr Monoah, a lawyer who has already co-ordinated patrols with South Sudanese community leaders said many African youths had been told to “go back where they came from” and were treated with suspicion when in shops as a result of the rising crime and public order offences.

Ecoville fears remain Tarneit’s Ecoville Community Park has had a facelift thanks to a community working bee last week – but residents fear the site will be vandalised again once police stop patrolling.

Victoria Police Commander Russell Barrett said he had been pleased to see families use Ecoville’s tennis courts and other parts of the park after the council, the owners corporation, police and the state government joined forces early in the new year to start cleaning the site up. Graffiti was painted over and rubbish picked up during the working bee last week.

Commander Barrett said police had been actively responding to resident concerns at Ecoville Park for the past 12 months and had launched Operation Ecoville in early November to crack down on youth offending and anti-social behaviour being committed predominantly by African and Pacific Islander young people.

Despite concerns in the community, less than 10 offences have been recorded at the park in the past 10 years, according to the Crime Statistics Agency. No offences were recorded in the two years to September, 2017.

“The sort of behaviour that has been exhibited in and around the area over recent weeks will not be tolerated and we will continue to actively police the area to ensure the safety of residents,” Commander Barrett said.

But an Ecoville estate resident said that while things had settled down in the past fortnight, residents had endured months of crime and public disorder.

The resident fears the problems will resurface once the police presence decreases.

“Nearly every night up till about 1am, all you could hear is yelling, stuff getting smashed and bashed,” the resident said.

City set to celebrate Werribee’s city centre is set to come alive with music, movies and mouth-watering food on Australia Day. The family-friendly event will begin at 5pm on Friday, January 26, with performances including Trent Hamilton, DJ duo The Consummators, Icehouse member Michael Paynter, and INXSIVE, the INXS Tribute Show.

Wyndham’s tourism and major events portfolio holder, Cr John Gibbons, said there would be fun for residents of all ages with activities along Watton Street including face-painting, classic cars and a special Kids Zone featuring bungee trampolines and a giant 30-metre slide.

MY WYNDHAM Jan Grapsas has been running the Gift Givers Gallery and The Kitchen Gallery in Werribee for nine years. She designs homewares and is a member of the Wyndham Business and Tourism Association. She talks with Alesha Capone.

I’ve been here since I was seven years old. When I moved here, there were 17,000 people here. It’s changed, obviously, with 250,000 people here now.

Not just the streets, but the amount of homes and shopping places – it’s unbelievable. When we went out in the old station wagon as young children, with our parents, you could get from one side of Werribee to the other in 10 minutes.

Now when I go to Ballarat, I have to factor in that it takes at least half an hour to get out of Werribee.

Running your store for so long, do you have a lot of connections with the community?

I have customers who are old friends, who have been coming into the shop since I opened. They want to know how my daughter’s going, my husband, the dog, how Christmas was. I’m also involved with Relay for Life.

We have fundraising shopping nights here where girls come in and shop, and they’ve been running for the past six years. We hold about 30 fundraisers a year.

It’s good for us, but it’s also good for them, because some of the funds raised go towards the Relay for Life. I think in the time we’ve been running the fundraising nights, we’ve raised over $15,000 for the community.

We also have fundraising nights for basketball clubs, football clubs, netball clubs, schools and kindergartens. I employ three girls, plus there is me and my husband, who is here on Saturdays and tells really bad dad jokes. My daughter is here too. It’s a family business, we’re

community-minded. We want to help people with gift giving, but also help the community.

Tell me about your involvement with the Wyndham Business and Tourism Association (WBTA)?

I’m a former secretary and I’m still involved.

What I enjoy, I think it’s being able to have a say on behalf of the retail community. We’re on the front line and trying to do the best we can for our customers.

We’ve got lots of ideas and we want to get things going for the area. We can see something’s not right and we can go to council and say, ‘Can you fix it?’ or we can fix it ourselves.

What do you like most about Werribee, or Wyndham?

I think what I really love about this place is that it’s fantastic to be able to do so many things.

We’ve got the marina, Werribee Park, the State Rose Garden, Shadowfax, the zoo, the B-52s.

The main street is gorgeous, with all the trees.

All the pop-up parks are great.

There is all this stuff in the one area, but people don’t know about it. That’s what the WBTA is working to make people aware of and trying to get the government to help. The resources we have here, in one tiny place, are amazing.

Any final thoughts?

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has supported us through the years.

A lake will be the focal point of the development of a massive recreation and picnic area at Laverton North. The Rotary Club of Laverton has undertaken the task of converting 186 acres of Crown Land at Laverton North from a rocky outcrop into a major scenic attraction for the western area.

Drunken teenage sex orgies, violence, vandalism and the sounds of loud rock music at all hours of the night have led to the bulldozing of the Grouse Court Reserve in the Heathdale Housing Estate. The reserve, which was opened to the public in mid-March of 1984 and cost the Federal and State Government tens of thousands of dollars to develop, was built to provide youth in the area with a recreation area and keep them off the streets.

A little girl who adored Barbie dolls and her brother who loved to make people happy will be laid to rest tomorrow. Molly Wilson, 4, and Ben, 7, drowned during a family outing to Gunnamatta Beach last Thursday.

Despite fishing off Werribee South for 30 years, Paul Catania has never seen anything like it before. Last Friday, Mr Catania’s daily catch included 12 King George whiting with small breaks in their skin – near their heads – with the appearance of burst ulcers.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir uncovers a new chapter in Sudanese cooking Jibrine Akima Magdaline Jok wears a number of hats.

She’s a Caroline Springs mother of four children.

She’s a successful career woman in the finance sector.

She’s a proud member of the South Sudanese community in Melbourne and Australia.

And now she’s the author and publisher of a fabulous South Sudanese cookbook.

So far as she and I can ascertain, it’s the first South Sudanese cookbook – ever.

The book was borne of her love of cooking and, more specifically, through a visit to her mother in Africa that came after more than a decade of separation.

She has been inspired, too, by the thought that food traditions can be a profound community glue in fraught times of war, refugees and families scattered to the four winds around the globe.

“When I visited my mum, we cooked every day and I heard all the stories,” Jibrine says.

“I spent most of my time jotting down notes and practising the dishes that she made on a daily basis.

“This advice she shared stays with me: ‘The more time, patience, love and passion you have for cooking meals, the greater the taste’.”

I am in awe of Jibrine’s efforts in scrambling up an Everest-like learning curve to bring this project to life.

She’s obviously very capable – but until now she had zero experience with writing, editing,

publishing, cookbooks, translation and more.

On top of all that, she has successfully created a book of more than 100 recipes directly from the maternal source – bringing to life in the written word recipes previously transmitted only by the verbal/visual folk methods of “a handful of this, and a pinch of that”.

Like all great cookbooks, Jibrine’s effort can be seen as an end in itself – it’s beautiful to handle and read, and the photographs are simple, honest and not inappropriately styled in terms of glam.

There’a strong accent on a wide variety of stews – meat, poultry, fish, pulses.

The recipes appear to be straightforward and well presented, and most of the ingredients of the easily obtainable variety.

In some ways, Jibrine’s cookbook journey is just beginning.

The challenge now is to get that book and those recipes into the kitchens of foodies everywhere.

PRESSED FOR TIME I think my hubby has developed an addiction – scouting the internet for kitchen gadgets. Several times, I’ve sprung him gleefully hunched over the Dreamfarm website, his latest purchases being the Supoon (a non-drip kitchen spoon he raves about) and the Garjet.

MM: Four out of five. I love food that tastes good and love to experiment, which means that sometimes I end up with fabulous creations and other days I end up with disasters!

Garlic presses can be fiddly at the best of times and really difficult to clean. The beauty of the Garjet is that it scrapes itself clean and then ejects the peel. It practically cleans itself, meaning the garlic ends up in your meal, instead of all over your fingers.

Better still, it can crush several cloves of garlic at once and there’s no need to peel away the skin first.

Spirit’s stand-out bowler across the tournament was Werribee young gun Jack Watt, who finished with nine wickets at 11.2.

The female under-18 state championships wrapped up in December with the Western Spirit finishing the campaign with a 3-3 record.

The dominant batters for the Spirit were Scarlett Saxon-Jones and Taylah Steadman.

Saxon-Jones notched two half centuries for the Spirit to finish with 145 runs at 36.3, while Steadman left her best till last with 59 not out against Northern Rivers to take her tally to 125 at 31.3.

It was a fairly even contribution from the Spirit bowlers, but Lauren McGrath led the way with seven wickets at 16.7.

The under-18 female grand final will be contested between Inner South East and South East Country.

Watt a find for Tigers

By Lance Jenkinson Werribee did not have enough rain-free time to deliver a knockout blow on Coburg and had to settle for a draw in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association at Coburg City Oval on Saturday.

But there was still enough time for exciting youngster Jack Watt to make his mark.

It was a big week for Watt, starring for Western Spirit at the Cricket Victoria under-18 state championships with a team-best nine wickets at an average of 11.22 across five games.

Watt backed it up for the Tigers on Saturday with an eye-catching 3-10 off six overs to be the main reason why Coburg could only muster 6-87 before rain brought about the compulsory closure to its innings after 31.2 overs.

Watt has stepped up big time for the Tigers this season and his captain-coach Tim O’Brien reckons he will only get better the longer the season wears on.

“From the start of the season till now, you can see his confidence has grown and he believes that he belongs at that level,” O’Brien said.

“He knows his game a bit better now, he’s turned into a really good bowler and is probably the fastest at our club at the moment at only 16 or 17 years of age.

“He’s got a big future ahead of him.”

Watt spent last summer yo-yoing between Werribee’s second and third XIs. It was his twin brother Matt who took the competition by storm last season.

But Matt’s departure to Footscray, along with the exits of Brad Robertson and James Freeman, paved the way to first XI cricket for Jack Watt.

Watt, a paceman, has taken eight wickets in the first XI at an average of 16.4, with three-wicket hauls in each of his past two games.

“We needed him to step up after losing a few bowlers like ‘Robbo’ [Brad Robertson] and James Freeman last year,” O’Brien said.

“He’s come into his own.”

It’s not only Watt who is taking care of business for Werribee.

The whole Tigers bowling attack has been on a high since the start of December with the workload shared around.

“Our bowling in the last few games has been really good,” O’Brien said.

“We’ve got a really good mix.”

Spinner Michael Kelly was a thorn in the side of the Coburg batsmen with 2-27 off nine overs.

Another youngster, Jack Budd, took 1-16 off six overs to continue his break-out season.

Tudor is well known in golf circles in Melbourne and especially Werribee where he won the club championship twice and the Werribee Open once before hitting the professional tour. Matt is a leading teaching professional and has recently opened the Golf Fitting Hub at Melbourne Airport Golf Club. He added another string to his bow this week, becoming the club pro at Melbourne Airport Golf Club taking over from Tim Moore. It is a big step for Matt as Tim was head pro for more than 30 years.

Matt’s experience in the industry makes him the perfect man for both these roles. He can talk to scratch golfers or the weekend hacker. What would you expect from a Werribee boy? His father Des, a premiership coach at the Werribee Football Club, is a Werribee Park member and is a constant winner in the weekly competitions. This is the big event on the local running calendar and there might be more reason to celebrate as a few are coming into the event in red hot form. Megan McMahon is another getting used to podium finishes.

“It was a little bit frustrating,” O’Brien said.

“The rain would stop, we’d get the covers off and it’d start raining again.”

“It’s definitely made it tougher for us.

“We pretty much have to win every game

to play in the finals now.” Werribee will hit the road to play premiership contender Kew on Saturday. O’Brien is not downplaying the importance of the game for the Tigers.

“It’s going to be season defining,” he said.

“If we drop it, it’s probably season over, but if we win, we know they’re one of the top sides and we can take it up to anyone if we get over them.”

Western Spirit has bowed out at the penultimate stage of the male under-18 Cricket Victoria State Championships.

The Spirit lost to the Inner East Emus in a rain-interrupted semi-final by six wickets under the Duckworth/Lewis system at the Harry Trott Oval on Friday.

The Emus have advanced to the grand final, where they will play Outer East Eagles next month.

Western Spirit finished the group phase in second place with two wins and a loss from their three games.

The Spirit crushed South East Bayside in the qualifying final by 98 runs.

It set up a mouth-watering do-or-die clash with the Emus, but the weather spoiled a good game.

The Spirit could only muster 105 in 38.1 overs with star batsman Dylan Brasher top-scoring with 40.

Falcons foster a consistent state of mind Wyndhamvale is striving for consistency as it enters the second half of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association north-west B1 season.

The eighth-placed Falcons have been unsettled by injury and unavailability, leading to a roller coaster ride of results and performances.

Falcons fast bowler Ryan Radford describes the first half of his side’s season as “up and down”.

“We didn’t have much consistency with the playing group,” he said.

“We had a lot of injuries, blokes away and a few new blokes in, as well.

“We had a couple of good results and a couple of poor results. The ladder shows exactly where we are.”

While closer to the relegation zone than the top four, Wyndhamvale has not given up hope of figuring in finals.

The Falcons showed some promising signs before the break – and they hope to continue that form into the new year.

“Anything can happen,” Radford said.

“We’re always striving to make finals until it’s not possible and that’s our plan.”

Just like all other games in the division, the first day of Wyndhamvale’s two-day battle with Newport-Digman at Wyndhamvale Reserve was ruined by rain.

Only 14 overs were able to be played before the rain set in, with Newport-Digman 0-25 when play was abandoned.

With both sides sitting outside the top four, the captains have decided to chase an outcome in the match with a draw fairly useless for both teams.

When play resumes on day two, Newport-Digman will bat for another 33 overs before sending Wyndhamvale in for the remaining 47.

“We’ve agreed to play a 47-over game,” Radford said. “It’s just so we can get a result. A draw is not going to do either team any good.

“We want to try and get a win … you play cricket for results and not draws.”

Wyndhamvale will back its bowlers to restrict Newport-Digman batsmen to a gettable score.

Jay Dolliver (16 wickets at 13.38) and Wade Kirkwood (15 at 11.33) – both top five bowlers in the competition – will be called on to produce their very best.

“Our bowling has been reasonably good all year,” Radford said.

“As with the last few years, we’ve struggled a bit with the bat.

“Making runs is what we’re focusing on … in the last few games we’ve been a bit better, so hopefully we’re starting to improve as a team and we can put a few more runs on the board.

“The next three weekends are pretty big because we’ve got to finish of this game, a two-dayer and a one-dayer.

“After that we’ll know if we’re still a chance to make finals.”

Hoppers fires up for big win Hoppers Crossing returned to the greens with a bang in the Bowls Victoria division 2 on Saturday.

Winning three of the four rinks on a rain interrupted day, Hoppers mauled bottom-of-the-ladder Essendon 99-61 in their first game for the new year, consolidating their spot in the top two at the Hoppers Club with seven rounds to go before the finals.

Bill Russell’s rink was in scintillating form for Hoppers, running away with a 34-6 victory. Colin Ravenscroft had a 31-17 triumph, while Denis Hewitt survived a scare to win 19-18.

The only Hoppers rink that went down was that of Keith Vanderpoel, which lost 20-15.

Hoppers skip Russell was full of praise for his side after the big win.

“Even though it was Essendon, who are on the bottom of the ladder, this could have been a danger game, but we’re second on the ladder for a reason and we showed that by getting three rinks up,” he said.

Hoppers will face its biggest test so far this Saturday, travelling to ladder leader Altona Sports in what is shaping as a must-win for Hoppers if it plans to overtake the hosts on the ladder and challenge for the minor premiership.

In division 1, Werribee lost to Fitzroy Victoria 88-76 at home on Saturday.

Giants make big strides

Giants coach Charles Thompson hopes Sunday’s 11-7 win over Mulgrave Rebels will spark his team’s revival in Baseball Victoria summer league division 2.

The Giants did not perform to expectation before Christmas, but Thompson can already sense a more positive vibe within the team as it chases a finals berth.

“Looking at the standings and where we’re at, we didn’t start off with as good a footing as we usually do,” Thompson said. “Hopefully, from today’s game we can build a bit more momentum moving forward. Everybody is up and at it right now.”

There was a bit of rust in Werribee’s win on Sunday – but nothing unexpected for a team that had not played since before Christmas.

In general, the Giants were the better team on the day, out-hitting Mulgrave and doing enough defensively to pick up the win.

Starting pitcher Josh Lee was outstanding.

Lee started the season slowly but has become more dominant as the season has worn on.

“He threw an outstanding game,” Thompson said. “He started off a bit rusty the first couple of games of the season, but leading up to the Christmas break he was only getting better.

“His last outing, he threw extremely well, but unfortunately we did drop that game … today he picked up right where he left off and he was in front of hitters in the count all day long.

“That’s where he’s really strong – every time he’s out in front of hitters, he’s hard to beat.”

Lee also had an impact in the batter’s box, going two-for-four with two RBIs and a home run in a well-rounded game.

Werribee, but was a bit wayward. Wade Balzer was brought in for the final three innings and guided the Giants to victory.

“He finished off the game and did absolutely fantastic,” Thompson said. “He gave up one run and probably three hits, but for the most part he kept the ball down and was getting outs.”

Dustin Biell was a constant menace on the offensive side of Werribee’s ball game.

The import picked up two hits and an incredible three stolen bases.

“It’s awesome being able to have a physical specimen like himself,” Thompson said.

“Being able to hit for power, contact, his speed, his arm – he can basically do it all really.”

Oliver Box and Cameron Wilson also came up with big hits for the Giants.

Fifth-placed Werribee will be looking to keep its momentum going when it travels to sixth-ranked Bonbeach Bluejays this Saturday.

New year, but same old Dom There was new year cheer for Dom Dudkiewicz in the 18th round of the Footscray Cycling Club’s summer criterium season.

Dudkiewicz, the club criterium champion, took out the first points race of the year, dominating the sprints to finish ahead of Jason Costin and Daniel Brauensteins.

In B grade, Coburg Cycling Club rider Louis Raymond cleaned up in the sprints to take a strong points win from Corey Basaraba and veteran Mark Micallef, while in C grade, the Creese’s, Jonathon and Edward, finished one and two.

Erica Gosney claimed the honours in a D grade women’s race that was cut short by a crash.

Fergus Browning crossed the line first in the D grade men’s, while E grade was dominated by Diane Edwards.

While the Holden Trax small sports utility vehicle showed a 25 per cent increase in sales in Australia in 2016, Holden is not standing on its laurels and has added to the range with a mid-spec LT. Slotting in between the LS entry-level and range-topping LTZ, it is intended to put Holden at the leading edge of in-car connectivity in the small SUV segment.

Holden says it is estimated that about 77 per cent of Australians own at least one smartphone and check them more than 150 times a day, so the company became the first in Australia to offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto phone systems as standard across the range.

Along with this has come new stylish design both inside and out, while Trax LS, with automatic transmission benefits from the same 1.4-litre turbocharged engine as the LT and LTZ providing improved performance and fuel economy.

The front-wheel drive Trax ranges in price from $23,990, plus on-road costs, to $30,490 and comes with Holden’s five-year 100,000-kilometre warranty and lifetime capped price servicing.

The Trax LT on test, taking its cue from Chevrolet global design, turned out to be one of the sharper models in the segment, with major styling enhancements including new front and rear fascias.

Premium styling continues inside, a fresh new console design including contrasting trim and a sweeping dash.

Trax offers class-leading connectivity through Holden’s MyLink infotainment system. A 7.0-inch colour touch screen with mobile phone hook-up via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is available across the range.

Active Select is operated via a single button on the tip of the centre console-mounted gearshift lever.

Straight-line stability is good, while gone are the days of tall vehicle body roll and choppy ride of a short wheelbase. The Trax’s ride and handling are high end – the Aussie engineers have seen to that.

Rear seats tumble forward, more than doubling the 356 litres of cargo space. The 60/40 split-folding rear seat backs further increase versatility.

The Trax has a number of convenient storage spaces scattered around the cabin, including four cup holders in the centre console and two in rear centre armrest.

Two storage bins are located under the cargo area floor to stow items out of sight and LTZ has an additional tray under the passenger seat.
