hether large, medium, small or micro ,each business in our city contributes to our local economy and it is the local economy and our resident workforce that underpins the very future of the city. Whilst we are all aware that we are challenged by strong residential growth, few may appreciate that, over the past three years, the percentage growth in business numbers in Wyndham has been double that of the population growth rate. With the economic landscape one of constant change, owning, operating or managing a business has always been a challenge. In a period that has seen the emergence and subsequent demise of the Blockbuster Video Store, we have come to recognise and understand that for businesses to continue to add value, improve efficiencies and grow markets they must not only embrace change, but lead change. In this 23rd running of our highly prestigious Awards, I am delighted that not only have we introduced an award that recognises Excellence in Innovation but also will be delivering Wyndham’s inaugural Innovation Summit in February 2018. Our planet is precious and we must strive
to ensure its future. Implementing energyefficient and robust waste management practices was once viewed by most as an option. Today, it is an imperative and therefore it is fitting that for the first time the Awards have recognised Excellence in Environmental Sustainability.
racie’s, located in Point Cook Town Centre, is a lifestyle boutique offering a range of unique gifts, homewares, jewellery and clothing. Gracie’s stock artesan creations, speciality brands and Fair Trade products from around the world. The inspiration for Gracie’s boutique came from the owner Kerrie’s teenage daughter Gracie who has her own category of artwork named ‘Made it by Gracie’. Working, learning and growing in the business is an opportunity which would otherwise have been hard to come by - due to Gracie’s diagnosis of autism, ADD and development delay. Gracie’s has a true community connection and stock products from many Wyndham-
based artisans and suppliers. Gracie’s best-selling vendor is a 14-year-old young entrepreneur from Wyndham, James, who established JM candles and, in collaboration with Gracie’s Boutique, has sold thousands of his handmade creations. Gracie’s Boutique also stocks Fair Trade Afribeads jewellery which is made from recycled paper by ‘The Kind Mother’s Project’ in Uganda, creating hope for Ugandan women and children by providing a market for the jewellery they make. Kerrie, along with a member of her team, will be travelling to Uganda in early 2018 to work with the women on new products for the Australian market.
I also applaud the introduction of a special award that recognises our Young Entrepreneurs. This is very special award for me and my fellow Councillors as this award represents our city’s future. Special congratulations to all five young finalists in this category and, while there may be some disappointment that only one is the recipient of a trophy, rest assured that Council and our business community recognise all finalists as champions. Well done to all finalists and winners and thank you so much for your outstanding contribution to our great community. Cr Henry Barlow Mayor

The Hopper Motor Group story began 55 years ago in 1962 when Barry Hopper opened the doors to Westland Toyota in Synnot Street, Werribee. rom inception, the team at Westland Toyota was committed to achieving excellence in all aspects of its operation, with a strong focus on customer service and to being actively involved in the local community. This, along with exhibiting a high level of integrity, enabled the newly formed business to quickly establish a level of trust and respect within the community – a position the business holds to this day. The development of the business saw Werribee nissan added to the group in 1972 and then Hyundai in 1973. Further expansion in 2014
F
saw the addition of Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Fiat and Fiat Professional, followed not long after by Kia, renault and Isuzu, with the Hopper Motor Group now marketing nine brands of motor vehicle. Significant investment in recent years saw the development of the new multi-million dollar development for the Hopper Motor Group at 163 – 179 Old Geelong road, Hoppers Crossing, where more than 140 staff are employed. The business has spanned three generations. Today, Barry’s son Paul and daughter Joanne hold the reins, with the support of their father who has since retired but is still heavily involved in providing input and strategic advice. The Group has formulated strategic business goals to support growth. In order to achieve long-term sustainability and profitability, specific strategies are formulated and implemented. These strategies aim to grow the effectiveness of the business in building resilient and adaptable processes in the areas of recruitment, learning and development, performance management, occupational health and safety, procurement and managing business processes in order to maintain cost control. A commitment to supporting the local community sees Hopper Motor Group invest in local sporting clubs, community-based programs, sporting players and local schools. The Group is humble in its approach with respect to giving back to the community - a community that they acknowledge has supported them from the very start and has helped them grow to the dealership group it is today. In summary, the Hopper Motor Group is a standout, well-oiled machine in every aspect of its business, and a credit to the Hopper family and all employees.
