CONCEPT Creating a strong connection with nature is the primary concept behind STAŠA DESIGNS. This might seem contradictory to modern-day fashion, but I believe that it is because of this that my concept is important. As a society, we have disconnected with nature, from where we began, from mother nature! It is time to change that. As a young girl, I spent my days deeply submerged in nature. Lifestyle back then was different, much slower than it is today. I recently stepped into my 30s, and have since noticed just how much time the younger generations spend in front of their screens. It makes me worry for the future and all of those young people left to come. I want to use my collection concept to reconnect with nature, with the world in the most beautiful way possible. We need to remind ourselves that creating the time to just be outdoors, whether it’s for a walk, a run or just to sit down, is essential. Nature is good for us; we are a part of nature. I believe and follow this mantra wholeheartedly. As animals, we’ve evolved to make sense of the natural world, and our connection with it is often forgotten and overlooked (especially due to the distraction of technology). Because we disconnected from nature, we stopped taking care of it. Now, we face the consequences. This collection is made from all-natural fibres and recycled fabrics. Every colour used is neutral, with a splash of black. This selection of colours allows the overall image to simply disappear into nature.

Colours black - night. white - clouds. cream - dry plants next to the sea beaches. duck egg blue - sea colour in the early morning. terracotta - Istrian soil.

STEP 2 SKETCHING

Sketching could be the most comprehensive process in the collection.

In each collection usually, I make around 40-60 sketches. When I am pleased with all illustrations I have created then is time for selection. Each collection has around 15 styles/outfits; which means that the collection has 20-30 items. Sometimes I go back to old collection folders and look for some ideas/sketches I haven't used in collections but maybe in the new collection will be suitable.

FABRIC RESEARCH For me is very important to find the right fabric for the right model.

Importance of finding the right fabric.

Finding the right fabrics can take a pretty long time. I usually go to textile fairs in London twice a year. Also, trying to attend the online showrooms. After I have received the swatches of the fabric, I start to combine colours. I choose my fabrics with care. It's vital that we know the full transparency of the factories where we are sourcing the materials.

PATTERN CUTTING AND SAMPLE MAKING

In this step, we can finally see how our garments will look and drape with fabrics that have been selected. This is an exciting step, as garments from the paper are coming to life. At this stage, I usually do the patterns with a help of an amazing pattern cutter from Portugal Mafalda. We meet over the internet this autumn and started to work together. I was usually doing my patterns by hand but Mafalda is digitalizing all my patterns which is much easier and quicker. After all the patterns are done I will start with sample making, I am the one in charge of this stage with a little help of Szilvia if I am running out of time. In this stage, I can check the fit of the garment and still have time to change if something is not right or sits incorrectly.

SEWING FINAL GARMENT

This is the last step before seeing all the items ready for the photoshoot. In this stage, I have help from two lovely ladies that are supporting my brand and me for a long time. I have a long term seamstress in my hometown, aunty Visnja who is always here to help with sewing more quantities, directing me on the right path... She was once a fashion designer for a well-known factory in Croatia, and she has a big knowledge of running a fashion business. Also, recently I have started to work with one more lady in the UK, she is from Serbia but living in the UK for a long time. Szilvia was also working for a coat factory many years ago. As a small brand, I also do some sewing, but I have many other things to run and this is the reason I have these two amazing ladies.

STEP 6 PHOTOGRAPHY

The photoshoot was supposed to be outside, but after unpredictable spring weather, we have decided to do it in the studio based in Rojc, Pula, and bring some nature inside. My talented friend Sandra Jukopila, who owns a Struchak flower studio Pula made beautiful dry flower decoration that was a big part of our lookbook. Photo credit goes to an amazing young photographer from Pula, Teodor Korodi. Behind the natural makeup look and hair is lovely makeup artist Andrea Prodan. And on end, we have my long time muse and friend Anita Dujic as a model. The perfect human who can deliver my designs as they should be, natural and looking perfect in every way.
