From the Publisher

It’s a Team Effort There are not many events in Arizona, or across the country for that matter, that have the ability to bring participants together from all walks of the aviation industry at the same time. One example that stands out is the annual Aviation Day at the Capitol. From the Military/DOD to manufacturers, from airports to pilots – all are represented there together for a common cause – to bolster and protect the aviation industry, and that includes everything from hot air balloons to drones. Arizona Aviation Day, although organized by the Arizona Airports Association (AzAA), is the collaborative effort of numerous aviation industry groups from across the state. The hard work begins months in advance and the committee tasked to organize this yearly event is chaired by the outgoing President of AzAA. What might have started as an opportunity to focus on the economic impact that airports bring to their communities and the state, has quickly grown to draw attention to the economic impact that all of aviation and aerospace has in Arizona. Arizona has been a good model for other states as well. There are now many states that have a similar event and more than one have drawn inspiration from the success displayed in the Copper State. Next year will be the 10th annual event and although there is a natural tendency to put it on autopilot and let it fly on its own, I am confident that that won’t be the case. I have had the privilege of working with many of the men and women that drive this event. The passion and dedication that they have demonstrated is strong. Arizona is a great aviation and aerospace state. You deserve nothing less.

Aviation Day Unites Industry at State Capitol For almost a decade now, aviation stakeholders have come together in Arizona for Aviation Day at the Capitol. The ninth annual event was held on Tuesday, February 18, 2014, from 11:00 A.M. - 1:00 P.M. on the grounds of state government. This premier event each year provides an opportunity to promote the variety and vitality of aviation in Arizona and to meet with state legislators personally and individually. “It was a great success once again,” said Jordan Feld, President of the Arizona

Airports Association (AzAA). “We had a large turnout from both the aviation community and legislators and their staff.” The Mission of Arizona Aviation Day at the Capitol is to inform the legislative members and staff of the Arizona State Government about the benefits and economic impact of a $58 billion aviation industry in the State of Arizona. The Mission also introduces these individuals Continued on page 12.

to the significant contributions made by the many businesses, organizations, and associations which support aviation in their communities and throughout the State. “Aviation Day really works well,” said Feld. “Legislators show up to the event, they see the tremendous economic impact of aviation and they understand why protecting and funding aviation facilities is so critical.” Feld said they celebrate with their valued partners in the legisContinued on page 14.

With an estimated $58 billion annual economic impact, Feld said aviation in Arizona benefits every aspect of our great society and this annual event helps ensure we are coordinated and mindful in protecting and enhancing our aviation resources. Attendees were able to see helicopter, aircraft and hot air balloon displays, along with information about

the numerous private and public-sector aviation contributors. Aircraft owners and pilots, airport managers, aviation manufacturers, educators, members of Arizona’s military community, and many others were present to discuss the importance and impact of aviation in Arizona. “Aviation and aerospace play a huge role in the health and prosperity of Arizona. It is important for AzAA and its partners to continue to work in cooperation with our State’s elected officials to ensure that this valuable industry continues to thrive and create jobs for Arizona’s citizens,” said Corinne Nystrom, Chairman of the Aviation Day at the Capitol Planning Committee.
