Editor’s Note This is the second issue of Stated Magazine and it is sad to say it is the last issue for me. I left the tools for someone to carry on and be successful with Stated Magazine in the Fall. The Editor-In-Chief position is officially open and it’s for someone who is determined to get the students’ voices heard. This position is not for the shy or the timid. This magazine needs a hard worker and someone who can give time for the magazine to be successful. There are so many things that I will miss about this school and Student Media. If it was not for the opportunity to learn media design through student media, I would have not found a job as quick as I did. I will be writing and laying out for the Dispatch newspaper back home I will miss the backstage access to concerts, the interviews I have done with Tyrese, Young Joc, Juelz Santana and David Banner. These experiences are priceless. I have been to rallies, forums, speeches and debates, but it will not measure to the feeling I will have on May 8th. To all my Bulldog fam, who are on their grind and trying to push to be successful by getting these interviews, the work experience and internships, I salute you. To the graduating class, Good Luck in the future and make sure you goggle me in about six months, cause I’m out this piece.

Young Alumni Speak
By Alicia Dowdy
Thank God for technology, but we did several phone interviews with some of SC State young alumni. What I mean by young alumni, students who have graduated from this institution since the millennium. The young alumni were glad for the opportunity to finally speak on their concerns when it comes to their Alma mater. After, they have spent countless dollars on tuition, homecomings, sporting events and the dreadful administration fees these young alumni wonder where the money actually goes. Trust me this is not a story you want to just breeze through. Sit back and read what your future may look like.
We interviewed Tanisha Fryar a native from Walterboro, SC who now resides in Orlando, FL were she attends modeling school. Tanisha graduated from South Carolina State University Cum Laude in May of 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Management. Logan Palmer a native from West Palm Beach, FL where he currently lives. Logan graduated from this university in December of 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. “I feel for the most part that young alumni don’t understand what is going on with the University while they are there, let alone when they have graduated,” commented Fryar.
10
MAY 2009 | STATED
“The young alumni probably don’t want to give back to the school because of the big ordeal with President Hugine. It’s not like we even know what actually happened. While we are in school we hear about all this money being given by past alumni but you don’t see any progress with the school,” said Fryar.
school worth more than the tuition?
There have been a lot of events that have occurred since these two have graduated. South Carolina State received a new President, Dr. George Cooper. While these young alumni have struggled to find their place in the workforce they are still timid to send checks to this university. South Carolina State University does provide a Career Center where students can get help with resumes, job search and interview skills. But is the
There are definitely mixed opinions when it comes to giving back to South Carolina State University. Most people can care less but the fact is the classes that do give back are not the new kids. The latest class to actually contribute a large amount of money was the Class of ’85. The University does have a lot of changes to make before the young alumni dig deep in their pockets!
“I fell like the school can do better with job placement. I have friends that went to predominately white schools that have been placed in great jobs within six months after they graduated. It took me two years to do the same thing,” stated Palmer.
Ask Adaeze
Q
I am a sophomore at SC State University and since I have been here I’ve been single. I finally found someone that I like; the only problem is he is a football player. I know it sounds funny but, I’ve heard a lot about them and how they pass girls around. I like him but I’m not sure if I should fully trust him, after all I’ve only known him for about a month. How can I be sure that he likes me?
Playing The Field Honestly, I would have second thoughts as well being that athletes in general are well known “players”. However, you need to look past the possibility of heartbreak and tell him how you feel. Let him know that you like him and you would like to see where the friendship leads. If he tries to get you into bed, refuse him. Sleeping with him will only show him that you’re not a lady and therefore not girlfriend material. Be cordial, give hugs, send signals, pecks are okay……a kiss if he’s extremely cute but nothing else. He should come around if he’s serious about you. If not…..please move on, he’s replaceable (trust me!)
Q
I’ve got a close friend that I love dearly. Lately she has been going through an awful lot and I have been there for her through it all. Since she moved to another city and found new friends, she has embraced some nasty and wayward habits. She smokes, drinks, and dresses rather inappropriately. Worst of all, she is extremely promiscuous. I’ve thought of ways to tell her but I don’t want to offend her at all. Do you think I should give her any advice or just let her live her life?
This issue isn’t something that should be sugar coated because the fact of the matter is that your friend is endangering her life. She might be upset with you for calling her out when you address the issue, but she will definitely appreciate your efforts somewhere down the line. So sit her down and tell her how her actions might affect her image, her health and her life in general. Of course she might not stop her habits immediately…..but remember Rome wasn’t built in a day. So continue to nag her about the issues that are of concern to you. To make her feel more comfortable you can also ask her to point out something’s that she would like for you to work on as well.

The Dream has pulled some new tricks out of his hat for his sophomore album, entitled Love vs Money. He has a variety of club bangers as well as a few good “slow jams.”
If you love vampire movies, then you would love Twilight. It is based on the best selling book written by Stephanie Meyer. The movie is about a teen girl named Bella (Kristen Stewart) who has to move in with her distant father to a very small town in the state of Washington. She is nervous about making friends at first but is kind of pushed into hanging with the newspaper staff after their attempt to write a story on her failed. The Cullens are walking in to the cafe’ and Bella is immediately drawn to Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson). She has a class with Edward and the wind blows and he smells her scent. He wanted to kill her with every fiber in his body but he couldn’t because of his attraction to her.
One of the most notable “slow jam” hits is his tune “My Love” featuring Mariah Carey. It’s a very catchy love song that is already being well received by the public and is faithfully played on the radio stations. The Dream has also created another dance worthy hit club banger called “Rockin That Thing,” which is another valuable addition to the lineup. It was quite a change of pace to hear the semi-crunk “Let Me See The Booty” featuring rapper Lil’ Jon. It’s not what I expected to hear from The Dream but it has some major hit potential. The Dream has truly outdone himself with “Love vs Money” the album is definitely worth your attention

New Artists 2look4
ENTERTAINMENT
By: Patrick Bradley Jr.
Drake
So most of you probably know his name by now, and that is Drake...Drizzy Drake. He is another artist like Tyga who constantly works with Lil Wayne. Drake is more of a smooth rapper who can easily cross the line between rap and r&b. Drake started off being an actor on the Canadian teen drama Degrassi in which he eventually became a rapper on the show as well. Drake has become well known to most and has become a revelation to all, even getting to be known as the new version of fresh prince. Drake always raps/sings about very personal matters and rarely, if at all strays to making a song just to appeal to popular demand.
Charles Hamilton
Rapper, mad music scientist, Sonic the Hedgehog are just a few of the adjectives used to describe Charles Hamilton. With his self-produced mixtape “Outside Looking” hosted by Green Lantern praised by the likes of Pharrell and Eminem and a forthcoming album, via Interscope in the first quarter of 2009. Jimmy Iovine’s newest signee, Charles Hamilton produces and writes all his own music and plays multiple instruments at the very young age of 20. Already profiled by NY Times, XXL, Complex, The Fader, Trace, and Vibe Magazine’s and Allhiphop.com, Okayplayer, Hiphopdx. com, DJbooth.net, iphopgame.com, Ballerstatus.com, Onsmash.com and the New Music Cartel among others; Charles Hamilton is a name you need to know!!
The Cool Kids
The duo of Mikey Rocks (born Antoine Reed) and Chuck Inglish (or Evan Ingersoll) met in mid-2005 after Mickey came across some of Chuck’s beats online and liked what he heard. They met up in their Chicago-area homes (where Mikey was born and raised; Chuck lived in Mount Clemens, MI, about 30 miles north of Detroit, until he was 11) with the intention of making beats to sell to other artists, but soon realized their own measured, smooth flows and lyrics fit best over their production. In 2007, though they had yet to release any material outside of what was posted on their MySpace site or MP3 blogs, the group started receiving a lot of press attention from fellow Chicagoans and tastemakers Pitchfork, who invited them to play at their summer festival. This led to a spot at New York’s CMJ Music Marathon, where they shared a showcase with DJ ATrak -- who offered to put out their EP -and an opening spot on M.I.A.’s solo tour. However, that same year the Cool Kids signed to Chocolate Industries, who released their debut, the Bake Sale EP, in January 2008, with plans for a full-length to follow.
Kid CUDI
Mixing quirky with clunky and making it all sound sexy is no small feat, but cocky, oddball lyrics are rapper Kid Cudi’s secret weapon. Born Scott Mescudi, the 25year-old Cleveland resident moved to Bushwick, Brooklyn, four years ago with little more than confidence and a dream. But Cudi had better luck landing a job at Dean & Deluca than he did a record deal. Cudi’s MySpace page nods to Coldplay, the Postal Service, and My Chemical Romance, along with more obvious hip-hop influences, and his musical curiosity is audible on the wideranging tracks he assembled for a recent mix tape, which includes the single “Day ‘N’ Nite,” the tale of a glum, imaginative pothead who is neither a player nor a gangsta—just a lonely guy with a broken heart. “My whole thing is just to put out positive messages in the music, give people something that can change their lives,” says Cudi, whose debut full-length, Man on the Moon: The Guardians, will be released on Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music label. “I was like, ‘I know I’m not sippin’ crazy juice. I know there’s somebody out there in this world who can relate to what I’m going through.”

Graduating from college is most definitely a huge milestone as well as a major goal for every student working towards a promising future. One could imagine the immeasurable amount of self confidence along with the immense sense of accomplishment that will result from attaining a degree. After this great task is complete, a change in lifestyle is an order. Along with this change in lifestyle comes the desire for more luxurious possessions, such as a new automobile.
The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro is the ideal car for the speed-loving graduate, not only because of its 3.6-L V-6 engine but because of its starting price of $22,995.00.
Features Anti-lock out protection, OnStar stolen vehicle tracking, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes, traction control, 150-amp alternator, 2 front power outlets, 3.6 liter V6 24-valve DOHC engine, 6 speakers, CD and MP3 player, satellite radio, auxiliary input jack, automatic headlights, halogen headlights, foglights, tire pressure monitor, compass, voice activated phone controls, remote trunk release, front and rear 2point seatbelts, crash sensor sends GPS signal, theater style seating, 18-in alloy wheels.
Financing An important thing to remember
when preparing to purchase a new automobile is that car dealerships often make more profit from the financing of the vehicle and the sale of “extras” sold in the business office than from the actual sale of the vehicle itself. (Extras include things like an extended service warranty, undercoating, paint and fabric protection, alarm system, rust proofing, tinting and possibly disability, life or health insurance.) Every

“extra” that you agree to purchasing serves to add another commission to the paycheck of the business manager of the dealership, so they will try their very best to persuade you to purchase unnecessary and overpriced add-ons. Doing your financing research prior to going to the dealership is the key to leaving the lot with the best deal. Applying for an auto loan at your bank or credit union and on the internet will afford you the luxury of comparing each of the loan offers that you have received (including the dealership’s offer), thus, insuring the lowest interest rate possible. If all else fails, try to negotiate the interest rate.
Remember Educate yourself about every aspect of the
transaction before you even think about walking on the car lot, research insurance rates, financing options and loan possibilities. Don’t let the staff of the car dealer ship rush and or confuse you into a deal that you will regret for the rest of your life. Remember that you are the customer and you have the power to buy or move on to the next dealership.
The cars are covered with pollen and the student body has been overcome with an episode of “Spring Fever”. nown as the “Island of Enchantment,” Puerto Rico offers a wealth of opportunities for active travelers from deep-sea fishing, kayaking and scuba-diving to horseback riding, windsurfing and parasailing. In Old San Juan, you can shop for handcrafted works or visit the centuries-old El Morro fortress. New San Juan is distinctly elegant with lavish resorts, great restaurants, and grand casinos. Puerto Rican culture is somewhat complex, others will call it colorful, and some will say Puerto Rico has unique characteristics that distinguish their culture from any other. So now it’s time for planning. How much is it going to cost me? Well, a flight to Puerto Rico will run you around $350 round trip. As a student you may want to enjoy your trip in style. The Ritz-Carlton San Juan Hotel Spa & Casino is a great place to relax and enjoy the sites beach side. The Ritz also has a 24-hour casino offering Blackjack,Texas Hold’Em, Caribbean stud poker, three-card poker, slot machines, and Bingo. The spa offers hydro therapies; treatments such as Piña Colada Scrub; and hair/nail care. If you happen to leave the fun of your hotel then a good place to see Puerto Rican art is the Museum of the University of Puerto Rico in Río Piedras. Due to space limitations, the museums galleries can exhibit only a fifth of their vast collection at one time, but the work is always of top-notch quality. Since Puerto Rico is an island and San Juan is on the coast, it only stands to reason there is nightlife by the beach. Most of the party places are on the main road. Monigan’s Irish Bar and the Oyster Bar are two cool bars that draw big crowds. And there’s club-style dancing at the Old San Juan Hotel. San Juan is a weekend town, with Fridays and Saturdays coming alive by 11 and lasting until, well, sometimes 6 a.m. Closing time is when the people decide to leave or move onto someplace else. A great time to visit is the third week of January for the San Sebastian Street Festival. Many of the city’s best bars and liveliest establishments are along two streets San Sebastian and Calle Forteleza in Old San Juan. Stylish dress is recommended, though San Sebastian Street is more casual. The mojito is the speciality drink of San Juan and bartenders take the time to make them fresh. US Currency is accepted and most bars take credit cards. Have lots of cash on hand, especially for pubclubbing along Calle Forteleza, which can be expensive and moving from one bar to another, is part of the party process. Bars, pubs and clubs are non-smoking, which is part of the reason people clog the narrow streets outside the venues. It’s not legal to have open containers of alcohol on the streets, though away from Calle Forteleza it seems to be accepted. After the site seeing and parting you can relax by the ocean and watch the sunset. Puerto Rico is a great place for first time international travelers. It has an explosive culture that is welcoming to tourists. The local are nice and they speak English so you will never get lost in translation! MAY 2009 | STATED

This season’s competition would mark the 10th year the Special Olympics has teamed up with the Professional Tennis Registry, the Official Tennis Trainer for Special Olympics programs worldwide.

sports, with the tennis games growing throughout the world. Participants got the opportunity to display their skills, be they novice for some to advanced, for the gold. Athletes competed in traditional singles and doubles tennis events, as well as Unified Sports® Doubles, where the teams consisted of one player with intellectual disability and one without intellectual disability of similar age and ability. To finish, an Individual Skills Competition designed for athletes who are not proficient in the basic fundamental skills required to play, offers contest in the basic forehand, backhand, volley and serve skills. Kicking off some of the volunteer spring break activities, students got the opportunity to compete alongside some of the best athletes, while making friends through tennis. “This experience has opened my eyes to a lot—their just like us and should be treated as such. The Special Olympics is great
and I applaud their efforts for shining light on their talents that would otherwise probably go unnoticed,” notes P.E Club President Jamie Dicks. This event would not have been complete without an opening and closing ceremony and the torch lighting. A human chain was made for the athletes to run through to start and end the event and a dance so that everyone could really have a good time. I personally found the event to be very exciting. The expression on the faces of the participants after a good rally was priceless and forever a part of my memory. It also reiterated for me a fact that I live by daily. You have to live the hand you were dealt and make the best of it. The athletes showed much emotion and enjoyment, which at the end of the day left a smile on my face knowing that I helped put that smile there.

MC: Do you look up to anyone professionally? Why? TV: Actually, I don’t; my team makes fun of me all the time about not knowing who the most successful Track and Field athletes are. I know some of the professionals, mostly the current ones, but I don’t look up to them. MC: What is it like running track on the college level? TV: It is so much more intense than high school track and club track. MC: What do you admire about your coach? TV: The thing I admire the most in my coach is his knowledge in the sport, and his drive to learn more about the sport. MC: What are your future career goals? TV: At this current time I have not made up my mind whether to continue running after college, but I do plan on going to graduate school to become a Physical Therapist. MC: How do you train on and off-season? TV: During the off-season I go on 15-20 minute runs and do hurdle drills.. I also go to the weight room, but the workouts are not as intense as they are when I’m back under my coach. MC: What is your most memorable moment running track? How long have you been running? TV: My most memorable moment thus far would have to be winning conference in the Pentathlon while setting a new record at the same time! I have been running track since the 7th grade! MC: Any special awards or recognition that you may have received? TV: While I was in high school I did win a national championship ring in the Shuttle Hurdle Relay with three of my other past team mates. MC: What are your goals for this season? TV: My goals for this season are to make the finals at the Regional meet, go to NCAA Nationals, and make the Under 23 USA team this summer. MC: What keeps you motivated during competition? TV: My competitiveness is one factor that keeps me motivated along with the support I get, and the other is my fear of disappointing my coaches, team mates, and family.

Honesty Biggers LW: How does it feel to follow in your Brother’s footsteps and play on the SC State team? HB: I wouldn’t necessary say I’m following in his footsteps, but it’s good for both of us to play on the team and it is an opportunity for us to do some things that have never been done before. He has been like a mentor to me both on the course and off the course. LW: What do you think is the greatest strength to your game? HB: My greatest strength would be my length, which is how far I can hit the ball. The length is very integral in aspects of the game. It’s a good thing to have but it can also be bad because if you don’t have control, then it would just be like a waste of talent. LW: What was your Welcome to the NCAA moment? HB: In the beginning, the team did workouts all the time opposed to high school when you only had to workout if you wanted to. Also the Very 1st tournament I competed in I didn’t play as well as I should because I was nervous. I expected to do well and put a lot of pressure on myself because I was playing #1. LW: What are some common misconceptions that people have about golf ? HB: The 1st one is that everyone has caddies. No one on the team has caddies. You have to carry your own gear. You don’t get caddies until you go pro. Another is that it is an easy sport all around, because it is very difficult both physically and mentally. Another one is that not a lot of black people play golf. I’ve played with a lot of black people, its just that they don’t get a lot of the exposure that other golfers get. LW: What is your most memorable moment at SC State? HB: Winning the most recent tournament at Fairfield. It is memorable because I had to come from behind and win without even knowing what my opponent had scored. I also had more of a drive to win than usual. After a while, I began to get in a zone. LW: What are your goals for the rest of the season? For your career? HB: My goals would be to win the next three tournaments individually. Just to play good. After college, I want to be a professional golfer. I also want to win a good share of money. LW: What are your plans after college? HB: To go to grad school in Florida and get a major in Hospitality Management and a minor professional golf management. Eventually, I would like to own and run a golf resort. LW: How did it feel to receive instruction from Tiger Woods? HB: I was overwhelmed at first. He’s the best in the game, and it was a very surreal moment. He also spent a lot of time with me helping me and teaching me the finer points of golf. After the lesson, I and other golfers whom were chosen got to ride the “Soarin” Disney ride for the first time ever.

Kevin Garnett, suffering from a sore knee, will be out the next three games in the Celtics schedule. He is due to return the final four games of the regular season. Garnett has not been playing a lot this year missing 15 of the last 19 games of this season. This is unlike the league’s best defensive player and great asset to the Triumphant Three on this Boston Celtic team. The slow progress is making Coach Rivers think “Is Garnett really going to play at all the rest of the season?” This will be devastating to the Celtics fans and many others who expect the team to win the NBA Championship again. Well, they’re not to far from the stick because Garnett’s replacements Glen Davis and Mikki Moore have been pulling some impressive numbers, which is very unusual for these players. Garnett and many other supporters believe that he will be ready by playoff time. Only time and the knee will tell if they can get the leader Garnett back. John Calipari, after one day of deliberation is heading to Kentucky. But who can blame him, now becoming the highest paid coach in college basketball. He received an eight year contract for $31.65 million plus incentives. And he is also receiving a $2.5 million bonus. Many of his old supporters and colleagues on the Memphis team feel that he let them down and made a last minute decision. Calipari had great influence on the players lives at Memphis that are wondering if they should stay or even the incoming players who were dreaming of playing for him are wondering should they commit to another college. Also, freshman Tyreke Evans is now contemplating the NBA draft, and many of his family members think that Calipari is playing a big part in this. What an impact this coach has on these males’ lives? Memphis is trying to match anything that Kentucky has to offer to Calipari.

Quarterback Jay Cutler, of the Denver Broncos is now available for trade. Cutler is unhappy that he failed to know about the Broncos interest in New England’s quarterback, Matt Cassel. Many players on this Denver team are in total shocked that this is even a talk or thought among this franchise because Cutler brings major offensive points to the team. Many fans are not excepting Coach McDaniels with open hands, saying that he is coming and changing things that do not need to be change. But Cutler is the one unhappy about the behind the scenes work that are happening between the franchises. Broncos’ fans and players should expect Cutler to be gone by next season. Lebron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers is leaving everyone on their toes, wondering what’s next for this team or this player. Talks of him being MVP are in the air, with him leading the team to a 13 game winning streak. “He is the greatest player in the league.” What about Kobe Bryant many may say this is bogus to give this semi-new player this title and he hasn’t been in the game that long. But his time in the league has been used wisely, showing his tricks, dunks, scoring abilities; how he can be an all-star player and play for the Olympic team, bringing home the gold. Chipper Jones already has a World Series ring and an MVP trophy. What he wanted was the chance to finish up in the place where he started. The Atlanta Braves were more than glad to give it to him. The MLB batting champion and the Braves agreed to a $42 million, three-year contract extension though 2012, a deal that could ensure Jones becomes one of those rare stars who plays his entire career in one uniform. There’s an option that could make the extension worth up to $61 million over four seasons. The U.S. Department of Labor filed complaints accusing suspended NFL star Michael Vick of illegally spending about $1.3 million in pension plan funds for his own benefit, including paying restitution ordered in his dog fighting conspiracy case. The Labor Department said Vick made a series of prohibited transfers from a pension plan sponsored by MV7, a celebrity marketing company owned by the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback. The department alleges that Vick violated his duties as trustee of a pension plan that covered nine current or former MV7 employees.
