MAROON AND GRAY
Senior Class History 1938" Until our Freshman year we had taken our education merely as a matter of course. Then, suddenly, we began to realize the gravity of our undertaking. Our teachers realized the seeming futility of the task before them. Such episodes as note-passing in Latin class, accompanied by spit balls from the rear of the room served to strengthen the not too favorable impression held by the teachers. But in due time their opinion altered, we hope. We proved to be quite docile and brilliant children, and allayed all their fears.
o-
We sent girls to the G. A. C. Board. Our boys who won Junior High varsity football letters were: R. Blair, D. Clark, T. Koon, R. Beemer, H. Whitmore, 'N. Harkins, R. Grazier, W. Casselberry, M. Peters, P. Hetzel, and R. Tressler. The boys who received Junior High basketball letters were: D. Snyder, T . Koon, R. Blair. In our Sophomore year the teachers, once awe-inspiring figures, became our friends and aides; the formidable row of books in the library became our guides and counselors. Our first officers were elected this year. They were: Elizabeth Kinsloe, president; Max Peters, vice president; Janet Fleming, secretary; Barbara Torrence, treasurer. William Harkins and Eugene Lederer became interested in debating. Our Soph Hop was acclaimed a great success. This was the beginning of our ability to give good class dances. Bernice Maurer and Madge Pearce b:came cheerleaders. The class was very well represented in all fields of athletics. Our members were on the football and basketball teams, as well as soccer and girls' basketball. William Harkins, Robert Struck and Jean Weaver were awa:路ded the P. T. A. scholarship medals. Our Junior year was our dress rehearsal. Of course our Senior year has exceeded it, but up until that time it was our masterpiece. John Currier, president; Elizabeth Kinsloe, vice president; Max Peters, treasurer, and Jean Babcock, secretary, led the Junior class. In football, R. Snyder, R. Blair, T. Koon and H. "\Vhitmore won All-Conference recognition, while M. Peters, P. Hetzel, J. Currier, and D. Clark won their letters. In soccer, W. Parsons, E. Stavely, and L. Bender made themselves known and received their letters. T. Koon and D. Sny-

der won basketball letters. In girls' basketball we find B. Maurer, K. Smith, B. Stempfly, N. Yearick, D. Wagner and M. Pearce letter winners. The Junior Plays, "Wits' Encl," "The Castle of Mr. Simpson," and "Wild Hobby Horses," under the direction of Miss Burns, and the Junior Prom were very successful. W. Harkins, E. Lederer, and C. Coleman were on the debate team. J. Lininger, J. Babcock, D. White, I. Schlow, E. Brockway, and J. Hechler held positions on the Piper staff. M. Anderson and J. Vi.' eaver were the Junior editors. The A. A. U.W. Award was altered and presented to ten Juniors: M. Anderson, J. Babcock, E. Brockway, J. Currier, W. Harkins, J. Hechler, E. Kinsloe, E. Stavely, R. Struck, and J. vVeaver. The Junior Declamatory Contest was another evidence of the class's ability to cooperate. The winners of the Extemporaneous Speaking were E. Lederer and W. Harkins; those of the Shakespearean Reading, C. Coleman and J. Babcock. The members of the class had various parts in the school operetta, "Norwegian Nights." As we come to the final chapter in our public school history, our activities are varied. You can find a record of this year's accomplishments in other parts of the book. Each trivial thing in our school clays has found a place in our hearts. Our eleven years with you have been happy ones, and the history of this year, the happiest year of all, will be kept to renew memories.

Hand Me Downs While cleaning out our desks for the last time, we found the following articles (among the books, papers, old pencils and other memos) which we kindly decided to pass on with our love to you, our successors. As follows: We donate B. Blair's school-girl complexion to all the Junior girls. Marge Hindman's curls to the sophomore girls. Mickey MacMullin generously gives his eyelashes to all who need them. Bill Dunkel says we can give his dimples to Fran Musser. Bill Harkins, after much argument, bequeathes his brains to Bob Breon since he will have no further use for them. Our punsters hate to be left behind, but we've lived with 'em long enough. Sookie Kepler's attitude of life we give to a serious-minded Phil White. Adelaide Garner's quietness goes to Evy Holmes. Bob Beemer's way with the women goes to Dean J. (Jitters) Clyde. Babcock's going to college now, so she leaves her early hours to Adie Porter to struggle along with. Ralph Blasingame hands over his laziness to Jananne Morse without a murmur. Thelma Hutchinson's giggle goes to one Fred Doggett. Mary Leathers' domesticity, (Cooking to you), goes to Betty Miller. Harry Roan's argumentative powers he bequeathes to Jean McDonald. Phil Hetzel leaves Betty Jane Haupt half his size. Johnnie Fleming's poise goes to Bob Coleman. To Ned Cummings, Don Clark's ability to keep peace among his women. Squirm Schlow and Jeanir Bechler leave their bicycle-built-for-two to Jo Ann Lowden and Wayne Bechdal. Dick Billett's faithfulness goes to Queenie Hartman, with requests to use sparingly and pass on to the many others. Bill Casselberry's freckles go to Betty Marsh. Bob McCord, Junie Parsons, Don White and Melvin Fry leave their hearts behind. To Ned and Edna go all the no-parking signs on the college premises. (To be obeyed!) Jim Stavely ( on behalf of the Senior class) leaves his interest in love to Barrel. Poppy donates her sister to Jackie Keller an.cl his Eloise. And in conclusion we leave our popularity ( especially with all the teachersjust ask 'em!), good looks, ability in love, intelligence, and all of the rest of the things we think we have to all succeeding classes.

Approaching our last year, we pause to view our accomplishments. In football we were well represented, and H. Gill, F. Musser, R. Sproat, and N. Stevens were lettermen . In soccer C. Breon and J. Keller won their letters among quite a few who went out for the game. In girls' and boys' basketba!l we had more than our share of representatives. In wrestling more than half the team was Junior. \Ve also had our members on the tennis, track, and golf squads.
\Ve had our share in debating. We helped to run the Piper into a deficit.. Miss Burns helped us to make the Junior plays a success, and the Prom was as much a success as the plays. Next year we hope to carry on as well as the outgoing Seniors of 1938.

The Sophomore girls who were on the basketball team were Betty Fletcher, Janet Graham, and Betty Long. Debaters from our class were Paul Heberling, Ri.1th Popp, Raymond Smith, and Phyllis Watkins. The annual Soph Hop, held in the spring, was enjoyed by the whole high school. Our class did a good piece of work through committees on our first school dance.

Do You Re1nen1ber--Back in '34 when we learned about love? (A lot of beginners then were Mickey and Elsie, Harlan and Mebe, Cae and Doggie, Skipper and Nance, Gazzy and Bernie, Jean Lininger and Maxie, Junie and Madge, Norma and Bob Beemer, Dot Wagner and Don Clark.) That "way back thar" Bob Blair and Barb were altar-bound, and Peggy McCormick flitted between Currier and Koonie? That at the end of an undefeated season the football team lost to Bellefonte? Lenore Krumrine's dance where mistletoe was plentiful for bashful boys? The first big high school dances we were allowed to attend-Soph Hop and Junior Prom? -And P . 0. D. arrived in town that year? '35, and our first night game when we beat Lewistown? How the music "went round and round" at the Slotch Brothers' dance? Whom the love bugs were biting? ... Baker and Rossman, Weaver and Currier, Walt and Mebe, and Elsie and Johnny Harkins-pardon me, or was it Olmstead ?-Lil Lytle and Frankie ( a Bellefonte lad), Scottie and Midge, Don Clark and Ruth Williams, Koonie and Cae, Skipper and Nance. How the high school went broke paying for band uniforms? "And It Rained" at the operetta? Charlie Sharp at our own Soph Hop (which lost money)? Miss Burns arriving? '36, when they really ( ?) started the Hollow? That they initiated the popular new grading system? The singer in a white satin dress with Johnny Barnes' Band at the Jr. Prom? Hang-over love affairs?-Johnny and Jean W. (but yes,), Anderson and Lewis. Certain other maids and men ?-Bob McCord and Fran, Harry (Rip-tide) Roan and Dot W., Don and Natalie, Dot Howe and Bob Beemer, Grazier and Donaldson, Junie and Frostie, Nance and Big George, Balclie and Ruth Williams, Koonie and Cae, Fishie and Jean Clark, Dex Stevens and Thelma, Helen Lee and Scottie, Maxie and Poppy, Ruthie Reish and Gil Olewine, Beverly and Dave Holahan, Bernie and Hayes. (We should never have started that list-it has no encl!) 路And spring fever made some changes ?-Mickey and Barb, Ray and Lenore, Mebes and Harlan, Ibby and Walt, Bill Clark and Cae. Junior Plays, when Lardy broke the couch and panicked 'em in "Wit's End"? "Wild Hobby Horses" made the contest at the college? Jean H. couldn't hold Struble's hand in "Castle of Mr. Simpson"?

'37-the Hollow completed at last? (-the thrill of our first game on it!) That Mr. Wright arrived? The Senior-Alumni where we made some money and introduced a barmilk? We introduced the Press Party, Miss Maroon and Gray and Peter Piper and even Mr. Passmore got his fortune told? Hi-Y Best Girl banquet at the Sigma Chi? Operetta openings, and Janie Slagle and Don White romancing while "Eddie" Harkins sang a solo-"Be Gone!"? That Douthett left and Northrup came? Commencement plans begun and everyone getting nice to each other after all these years? Shifts in the sands of romance ?-Still Bob and Fran, then Mickey and Marge, Dick and Bernie, Barb and Ray, Blasie and Ibby, Clarkie and Hosterman, Turner and Henry, Weaver and Yeuell, Lenore and Harry, Blair and Keller, Barrel and his Betty Wash, Ruth Kuhn and Bob Lower, Hindman and Hetzel, Currier and Babcock. 路 That we're going to conquer the world?
