The guidance counsel· ing system was altered this year. Each counselor is now responsible for all students in a certain section of the alphabet instead of being responsible for a single grade. Although the "format" of the department has changed, its usefulness has not . The guidance de· partment is s till a reliable and invaluable source of information for any or all problems concerning school work, schedules, vocations, colleges, or even one's personal life.

Staffs Keep School Running The cafeteria staff once again this year managed to calm a countless number of clamoring stomachs. Although they had to contend with a greatly increased student body, the staff provided a constant and dependable variety of nutritious and enjoyable foods. The custodial staff works hard to keep the school clean and operating smoothly.

Class Of '70 Attempting to uni fy the senior class and promote class spirit, the Senior Senate spent many hours in dis· cussion trying to find meaningful solutions to several problems. The persistent Elks Club controversy was more thoroughly studied than in previous years, al· though il was not completely resolved in a student vote. Through sponsoring many dances and activities, the Senate worked at its purpose of giving the senior.,class a year to remember.

AFS Hosts '~ussien A link between students of other countries and those of our own school is the American Field Service, a national scholarship program bringing students from abroad lo America and sponsoring American students in other countries. This year our school was fortunate in hosting Andy Ramsay, from Australia, a lively addition to the senior class. A Halloween party, the Student Council circus, "Almost Angels," and a bond drive were supported by the AFS Club in efforts to raise money to send a student from State College overseas next year and host a foreigner.

Orchestra And Ensembles
Mr. Hartman became the orchestra's new director this year. Two concerts for the school community were given , each offering a diversification of music. The music presented at the winter concert varied from the popular tune " Bye Bye Birdie" to Wagner's " The Overture of the Meister Singer." Eleven students attended District Orchestra in February and Regional Orchestra was later held for those who did a superior job at the District Orchestra.

Humor Sparks Piper Issues Perhaps the most valuable means of informing the students about the activities of the school, the Piper this year tried to improve its format and became a fuller expression of student opinion and a more polished example of good journalism. This year's Little Lion football team achieved a record exactly opposite to its 1968 campaign - 6-3. The Lions came on strong late in the season under the guidance of Jim Williams, who saw his first year as head coach at State College. It was a year of experimentation for State in formations and positions, as several underclassman were in the starting lineups. State dropped the opener to Dubois but bounced back to edge Chief at Memorial field 7-6. Bald Eagle sque.aked by the Lions 15-14, only to see State come back to clobber Clearfield 27-8. A big Lewistown team handed us the last defeat as the Lions claimed victories over Huntingdon, Philipsburg and Tyrone and finally Bellefonte in the Iron Kettle game. Senior end Scott Gemberling caught 36 passes for 545 yards. Seniors John Deibler, Mike Koehler and junior Steve Walker also did an outstan ding job for State. The Little Lion J.V.'s continued their winning tradition by remaining undefeated for two years. All J.V. 's saw action and Tim Curley, Ed Stefanko, Dave Jones, Al Sherritt, and Larry Suhey got a taste of varsity action.

Varsity Rebuilds Through September heat waves and October rain squalls, the varsity cross country team rallied to an undefeated season. Coach Horner referred to this season as a " rebuilding year" for his 17-0 squad. American Field Service scholarship student Andy Ramsey did some impressive running for State before injuring his leg. The Junior Varsity harriers finished on the heels of the Varsity with a 12-1 record, the only loss to Altoona.

Once again the Lion Cagers rolled to the Central State League Championship while sporting a 16-4 record. Coach Kemmerer's Lions started off slow but came on strong through the efforts of Mike Koehler and Steve Brackbill. The high point of the season was when Mike Koehler scored his l ,OOOth point and set the single game mark of 48 points. Who could forget that same night when the Little Lions scored 100 points against Bald Eagle. Although Koehler and Brackbill made it look easy, they received valuable help from juniors Mike Archer, Steve Walker, Tony Jurik, and sophomore Tim Curley.

Indoor Fieldmen Travel To Mt. Lebanon The 1970 Indoor Track team coached by Mr. Horner and Mr. Wallace had an other fine year with one dual meet and several tournaments. The team started with an out-of-state tournament with Bishop Loghlin and ended at home with a meet called State College Championship. Looking for keen competition, State Hig h had to travel out of the state to places like the Bronx and Brooklyn to find the hard-nosed teams. On one of the out-of-state trips the team ran into a little car difficulty with two flat tires and did not arrive home until five A.M.

Indoor Harriers Sparked By "Kangaroo" Leading the teams this year were co-captain And y " Kangaroo feet" Ramsey and Phil " The Mac" McMullen. These two men kept the young team in line and insured team spirit. Other team leaders were Ray Crider, the vaulter, and the hurdler, Larry Gamble. With consistant place winners like McMullen, Ramsy, the Dixon boys, Steve White, and Lincolon Gotshalk, the team never let the name of State College High School down. With the building block of this year's team, runners Szilega, Batt, and the fieldman Parks, Forster and Barber coming back, State College and the coaching staff should have another fine year.

The Junior Lions were inspired by junior 145-pounder Harry Smith, who scored eight falls in regular J. V.competition. Only six teams scored in double figures against State College, while the remaining seven scored less than ten points each with one shutout against Huntingdon. Other J.
