ADMINISTRATION

PLAYING ON A WINNING TEAM I'm proud to be a part of the class of 1972. We all enjoyed the experience of cheering and supporting an undefeated football team last fall. This kind of experience is a great morale booster and unites the school w ith a feeling of pride and strong school spirit. No one enjoys backing a losing team. In a very short time your class w ill separate and move in many different directions. The class will probably never again unite as one complete body. As each Senior leaves State High for some new goal, I challenge you to do your best to always play on winning teams. Never accept a substitute for success in your chosen field and strive to make your team a winner. Many times a bad decision or a rash moment may create a situation in which you experience failure. Be alert, and when it is necessary to make a choice, make your decisions in such a way that we can always be proud of you as a graduate of State High. Best wishes to each member of the class of '72 as you leave high school and continue your journey through life.

ENGLISH

The English program underwent a real revolution this past year, with all Juniors and Seniors electing new courses every nine weel<s, giving them four complete courses per school year. Among the many advantages of this system are the greater number of alternatives in selecting subject areas, and the greater number of teachers and teaching methods encountered by a student during the year. Some of the more popular courses offered this past year were Mythology, Shakespeare, Essay Writing, Puppetry, Acting and Directing, American Humor, Power Reading, and Discussion and Debate. The Sophomore class was not included in this program, but were required to take English II, a basic course in grammar, composition, and literature. The English Department welcomed four new teachers to its staff - Mrs. Mary Bates, Mrs. Joan Reese, Mr. Ronald Pavlechko, and Mr. Eugene Tomlinson.

SOCIAL STUDIES Most of the history courses continued as they have in the past, with the Sophomores taking a course in World Cultures, Juniors taking American History, and Seniors taking either American Government and Economics or Problems of Democracy. Also offered as electives for upperclassmen were courses in European History and Geography in an Urban Age. While other departments were undergoing many curriculum changes, the Social Studies Department had one major change. In the Advanced Placement American History course, the high rate of enrollment forced Mrs. Marion Bressler to expand from one class to three. Department personnel remained stable with the only addition being Mr. Greg Ferro.

This year's Math Department dropped two advanced courses, Abstract Algebra and Independent Study, from the 1971-72 curriculum. Both were semester courses with traditionally small enrollment. During the second semester, however, Mr. Dwight Mostoller conducted the Independent Study course on his own time for interested students. Also, the large group method of instruction in Geometry and Algebra was discontinued after two years of negative student reaction. All was not lost, though - two fine young .teachers were added to the department and another was reinstated after a year of substituting. Mr. Barry Rossman and Mrs. Sherry Triman are the new teachers. Mr. David Clemson was on sabbatical this year. In September of 1972 a new course, titled Modified Algebra, will be offered in an effort to expand the course alternatives in Mathematics.

SCIENCE ~-?~~~ ~ . >~

The Science Department shuffled its Earth Space Sciences program and came up with what appears to be a winner. Four new semester courses, offered over a two year period, are being conducted in addition to the regular full year Earth Space Sciences course. During the 1971-72 school year, Oceanography and Geology were offered, and next year the program will be completed with the Astronomy and Meteorology courses. One other new course began this past year, Foundations of Chemistry, designed especially for those people going into the physical sciences. Three new science teachers were initiated into State High this year: Mr. Thomas Arnold, who is teaching the new Earth Space Sciences course, and in Biology and Physics respectively are Mrs. Alice Jordan and Miss Christine Nichols. BUSINESS The 1971-72 school year saw another period of growth in the Business Department. In particular, stenography has benefited through the utilization of three IBM listening stations. This individualized instruction enables groups of up to six to take dictation at progressive rates, from one speed range to a second higher speed range and finally to a third speed range for the advanced students. The teacher, meanwhile, is working with a fourth group and monitoring the progress of the three groups.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE Instructors in the Language Department continued to expand their educational efforts through activities intended to better illustrate the cultures of the native peoples whose la nguages w ere being studied. The language laboratory supplemented the traditional teaching methods in the instruction of grammar and vocabulary. Two new teachers, Mrs. Janet Flinchbaugh and Miss Debra Lyle brought '72 spirit to the language department this year. We were also glad to see Mrs. Anna Frick return after a semester's leave of absence.

RELATED ARTS State College High School rose to national musical prominence this past year as Mr. Franklin Hege and his band were invited to participate in the Winter Olympics in Munich, Germany. They will travel to Europe in August for a two week visit. The invitation came at an opportune time, as the band received new uniforms this past March. Other major activities in the Department included the performance of the musical comedy, "Annie Get Your Gun" and the A Cappella Choir's trip to Altoona to make a tape presentation for television station WFBG. In addition, the school's many artists displayed their works with excellent success in various exhibitions during the year.

THE WAY IT WAS

Only three years ago, better than 500 of us were thrown together into a strangely new and different builq_ing, the State College Area Senior High School. Most of us spent our Junior High days in the school across the street. It was there that we had just begun to develop the interests and discover the friendships which were to become such an important part of our lives in the future. On the first day of school in September of 1969 we shuffled timidly through the senseless maze of corridors, eyes glued to the little numbers and the teacher's names appearing next to the subjects listed on our schedules. Frighteningly old-looking upper classmen nonchalantly strolled past us, self-assured and business-like. Then we filed into the auditorium to listen to the welcoming assembly, feeling a little self-conscious about sitting together and, for the first time, being referred to as a "class," the Class of '72. "Do you ever feel lonely?" the Student Council President asked us. The only reply he received was a smattering of nervous laughter. Quickly, we became accustomed to the workings of the high school. As Sophomores, we spread ourselves thin, joining career organizations and various sports, presenting our first One-Act Play, serving as Student Council Representatives, participating in the Welfare Drive, marching in the band, singing in the choir, formulating our first class senate, attending the Sadie Hawkins Dance and other dances and mixers, and of course, studying for our 10th grade high school courses. Some became involved in the vocational-technical program, taking advantage of the tremendously modernized and diversified facilities available at the Vo-Tech School. Others took general courses or began developing business skills through the various course offerings of that department. Before long, Senior Week arrived: many tearful good-byes, and the beginning of summer vacation. During our Junior year, the "Class of '72" began to develop its own special character, a character made up of tremendously diversified and distinct individuals. The sports teams, relying on numerous Junior classmen, proved their excellence repeatedly in competition. New organizations, ranging from the Student Union to the Ping-Pong Club appeared on the scene, staffed largely by Juniors. New friendships with members of last year's Junior Class and the underling Sophomores flourished. Another year gone-by, this time apprehensive farewells, the long-awaited Senior year was nearly upon us. Now it has arrived: a new Senate and Student Council, Astra Club, undefeated sports teams and several broken records, the new Modified School-Day Program is instituted, A Cappella and Choralier concerts, the band sponsors a fund drive for new uniforms and is honored with an invitation to perform at the 1972 Olympics, student-faculty dialogues are reborn. The class of 1972 emerges, consisting of the politically active, the vo-tech students, the sports-minded, and the academically inclined students and many others. As Seniors we begin to think of a future outside and beyond the walls of our high school but also of a common past in which we knew dissension, happiness, dep ression, and shared pleasures. Now, we graduate and say good-bye to everything - except the special friendships, the knowledge gained, an'd wisdom won.

CLASS OF '73 One year gone by, one year to go; The Juniors, not yet recovered from Sophomore Trauma, are already feeling the pangs of Senioritis. But rather than bemoan their fate as in-betweeners, the Juniors enjoy life, throwing themselves with vigor into the activities and friendships which the Sophomores are too shy to at. tempt and the Seniors too tired. CLASS OF '74 The Sophomore underlings begin the year with timidity, poking their noses only occasionally into the affairs of Upper Classmen. Somehow conspicuous in their youth and inex perience, these innocents bravely persevere until that long-awaited day arrives when they become no longer Sophomores, but fellow classmates and friends.

State College football had a dream year in 1971, going undefeated for the first time in 26 years and proving itself to be the power of Central Pennsylvania football. Congratulations are deserved by all involved. State won the Central Counties and Western Conference Championships for the second year in a row, having emerged victorious in 21 out of its last 22 starts (its only loss was to Tyrone late last year). A high-powered offense was led by Larry Suhey, who gained 1,111 yards on 193 carries for 17 TD's this year. Dirk Grissinger spearheaded a stingy defense that recorded five shutouts and allowed an average of only three points a game. These two squads climaxed a perfect season by destroying Bellefonte 48-8 to retain the Iron Kettle. Head Coach Jim Williams was named Coach-of-the-Year for his exceptional leadership. Six players were named to the All-Area teams: Larry Suhey, Ed Stefanko and Dirk Grissinger on offense, and Al Sherritt, Andy Sefter and Tim Curley on defense. Suhey was named to the AP and UPI first string All-State backfield, and the UPI selection committee named Grissinger, a two-way performer at tackle, to the second string All-State squad. With so many senior stars graduating, State may not be able to duplicate their fine record next year, but an undefeated JV team greatly enhances State High's chances of achieving a Penn State-type winning streak.

Coach Ken Fogleman's State College soccer team h ad another outstanding year, finishing with 12 victories against only 3 losses and a tie. Perennial power West Snyder proved to be tne路路 primary impediment to a perfect record this year, as Sta le met defeat in both m atches. But th ey had more than their share of big wins, as they cumulatively outscored their opponents 62-21. In their 5-0 win over Penn Highlands in the team's third outing, they outshot the Cougars by an incredible 80-0. Enemy goalies had the most trouble with leading scorers Joh n King, Joe Mendez and Dave Farrand. Seniors walked off with the individual honors this year, as no less than six made the All-League roster. First stringers include Mark Orlando, Dave Farrand, Steve Mentzer, Lee Schisler and Joe Mendez. Phil Suh r made the second string sguad. The JV squad defensed their oppon ents to an 11-0 slate, and in th e process achieved a most remarkable statistic: They did not allow a single goal to be scored against them. With such tremendous talent in the underclass, the continued success of the soccer program seems assured.

Coach Jackson Horner once again demonstrated the excellence of his cross country program by fielding his fifth und efeated squad in fi ve years. State College has no w w on 72 straight dua l meets. All good things must come to an end, and it was Altoona that finally found the secret to defeating a State College girls' tennis team. It was the first loss in the history of the sport at State High. Looking ahead to next year, four of the starting five girls will be graduating. But on the brighter side, this year's number one performer, sophomore Kathy Quinn, will be back to lead her team to hopefully another long winning streak.

Paced by the inside-outside scoring power of Bruce Ellis and Mike "Radar" Fergus, State College coasted to its fourth consecutive Central State League Basketball Championship, losing only once in league play. The big victory in 1972 was State's win over perennial District 6 power Altoona, the first such victory in many years. The Junior Varsity squad also contributed to the collections of State High Championships by winning their division of the Central State League, with sophomore Todd Lundy leading the way. State will lose a number of valuable players from the squad through graduation. Three year starter Tim Curley was the team leader in assists and a consistent scorer. Center Bruce Ellis led the team in rebounds, and guard Mike Fergus led the team in scoring with over twenty points per game, mostly on long outside jumpers. Fergus scored his sooth point of the season on the last game of the regular season. State College will also feel the loss of seniors Rick Simons and Doug Welter, who often picked up the slack when their teammates faltered. Fortunately, high scoring Junior Barry Fagan will be back to lead next year's squad to what looks to be another successful season.

STATE HIGH IN CONTROL

Led by a number of outstanding senior gymnasts, State College enjoyed a 4-1 record, losing only to Altoona, 91.95 to 88.15. Altoona also edged State College for the team District title, despite the great individual efforts by the District's number one and two all-around gymnasts, Jay Cooper and Phil Hawk. Cooper's specialties were vaulting and flo or exercise, w h ere h e was u nbeaten. Hawk was the defending District 6 high bar champion, but was edged out fo r title honors this year. Jim Sweetland, senior specialist on the pom m el horse, was undefeated during the dual meet season and took second place in th e District compe tition. Senior Leon Carberry added dep th in th e floo r exercise and still ring events. Coach Hubie W hile is lo be congratulated on his team's success in 1972.

Coach Ann Infield's gymnasts concluded perhaps the best season in the history of the sport with a 1972 District 6 team championship. Margie Clagett and Alicia Goode took first and third, respectively, in the all-around competition. Other outstanding performers included seniors Sue Bergstrom and Bronwen Gamble, and juniors Sue Dunkel, Martha Kent, Karen Kendall, and Ka th y Hartnett. With a team composed of mostly underclassmen, next year promises to be another good on e for State College.
