bagworms. However, if you only see a few bags, now would be a good time to pick them off and destroy them. As we mentioned above, large populations of bagworms can make handpicking impractical. In such cases, spraying is recommended. New bagworms will likely hatch and leave the mother's bag in May but spraying is usually not recommended until June. Spraying now will be ineffective because the young are too well protected inside their mother's bag. We also have a brochure on “Bagworms” at your local Twin Creeks Extension Office.

Reducing food waste saves money, says food safety expert In normal times, it benefits consumers and the environment to not waste food. But Londa Nwadike knows it’s even more important now, when the COVID-19 pandemic has caused disruptions in the food supply chain. “In 2014, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service estimated that 30% to 40% of edible food in the United States went to waste,” said Nwadike, a food safety specialist with K-State Research and Extension. “And, at the household level, the average U.S. family of four loses an estimated $1500 per year on wasted food.” Nwadike, who is located in Olathe, Kan. and has a joint appointment with the University of Missouri, has work with staff at both universities to publish a fact sheet to help consumers cut the waste and save
money at home. ‘Working Together to Reduce Food Waste’ is available for free from the K-State Research and Extension bookstore. Nwadike said the publication outlines a few strategies for reducing waste, including things consumers can do at home; donating to food banks; and building a compost pile. She said consumers should try to reduce the volume of surplus food they have in the home to start. Some of the strategies for doing that include: -Shop your refrigerator first. Before buying more food, eat perishable food in the refrigerator, or incorporate it into meal planning. -Strategic grocery shopping. Once you plan meals, make a shopping list – and stick to it. Avoid impulse buying.
-Store food properly. Maintain your refrigerator at 40 degrees F or less, and freezer at 0 degrees. Store food in packaging that is designed for storage in the freezer, refrigerator or possibly at room temperature. -Extend the life of food. Frozen food can be safe for extended periods of time; follow recommended storage times. Canning properly is another way to extend food life. -Understand and check food product dates. A “Sell by” date tells the store how long to display the product for sale. “Best by” or “use by” dates are the food manufacturer’s recommendation for best flavor and quality. For more tips on how to reduce food waste in the home, visit the K-State Research and Extension food safety website.
NCBA Opposes Government Mandate Restricting Cattle Marketing Options National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) Policy Division Chair and South Dakota Rancher Todd Wilkinson released the following statement in response to the bill introduced by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) that would require a minimum of 50 percent of a meat packer’s volume of beef slaughter be purchased on the cash market: "Currently, cattle producers utilize a multitude of methods to market their livestock, including the cash market. Increased price discovery will benefit all segments of the cattle industry — that is why NCBA has been closely working with key stakeholders, industry experts, and our partners in academia to develop tangible means to meet that end. must not restrict an individual producer’s freedom to pursue marketing avenues that they determine best suit their business’ unique needs. Government mandates, like that being proposed by Senator Grassley, would arbitrarily force many cattle producers to change the way they do business. We will continue to work toward a more equitable solution and invite Senator Grassley, and other lawmakers interested in this conversation, to join us in the search for an industry-led solution based in free market principles."

Online resource can help organize family records
‘Our Valuable Records’ is available free for downloading, printing
The new coronavirus pandemic has many of us thinking about topics that, let’s face it, we’d rather not.
But in an emergency, would your family or trusted friend know who to contact? Your bank? Your financial adviser? Your insurance company? Free resources from K-State Research and Extension are available online for downloading and printing, including Answers to puzzle on Page 4
Our Valuable Records, which can help anyone gather important information in one place. That information can be kept in a safety deposit box or other secure location and can be invaluable in emergencies.
“It may take a bit of time if you are starting from scratch to collect this information in one place, but the effort is well worth it,” said Elizabeth Kiss, financial management extension specialist and the publication’s author. “Having this in-
formation in an easyto-retrieve form can make recovery from natural disaster or a health emergency go more smoothly.” The form includes space for family members’ names, birthdates and more, plus contact information space for key advisers, such as attorney, executor, doctor, religious adviser, insurance agents, and banker. It can also help gather basic information about vehicles and other property and credit, bank and retirement accounts. More information about this and other resources is available at K-State Research and Extension offices across Kansas. Links to resources also may be found on the K-State Research and Extension COVID-19 page.
The Deadline for our Next Issue is noon on Wednesday, May 20, 2020. You may submit your ad by email to statelineshopper@gmail.com or by text/phone: 785-533-0104.

Rural businesses should consider post-COVID-19 strategies As stay-at-home orders end and stores begin to reopen, the leader of one of the state’s leading rural development organizations says it is a time for business owners to reconsider their strategy as it relates to the COVID-19 pandemic. “I call it the three R's: Re-orientation, re-energizing, and resilience,” said Ron Wilson, director of the Huck Boyd National Institute for Rural Development with K-State Research and Extension. “Customer expectations and worker expectations have changed. As businesses reopen, owners need to re-orient their business plans and facilities to assure a higher level of disease protection. This means providing physical barriers, arranging for adequate spacing, providing masks to employees, and emphasizing constant sanitation, as many ongoing businesses have done.” Business owners should be sure to carefully comply with local health department directives, he said. “The second ‘R’ is re-energizing,” Wilson said. “It will be important to rebuild the local economy as quickly as possible, while following the phased guidelines for reopening.” Many supply chains have been disrupted in the short-term, but markets are adjusting. “We believe there will be pent-up demand for certain products, and we encourage businesses to advertise, hire staff, and continue to emphasize customer service,” he said.
“Resilience has to do with planning for the long-term,” Wilson said, noting that the challenges posed by the pandemic and the resulting policy response have demonstrated the importance of communication between a business and its suppliers and lenders. In the future, businesses might also wish to pursue improving their online presence and ordering systems, for example. “Business owners should always be thinking about building relationships and positioning themselves for the future,” Wilson said. He added that businesses should take direction on local policies from each county and its health department. Information on best practices for reopening can also be accessed from K-State Research and Extension, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and the Kansas Department of Commerce. “Main street businesses face a lot of challenges,” Wilson said. “The economy will benefit if consumers support those businesses as they move carefully to reopen."
