Crop scouts stopped in wheat fields across the state over three days and calculated potential yields using a history-based formula provided by USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service. This formula has traditionally been used by the Wheat Quality Council's Hard Red Winter Wheat Tour, which is held each year during the first week of May. This year's tour was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so a virtual tour was held the week of May 18 by Kansas Wheat and Kansas State University Research & Extension, with support from the Kansas Department of Agriculture.

While the virtual tour was based loosely on the WQC's tour, it did not follow the same routes, nor did scouts visit as many fields. This virtual tour gave a broad look

Calculated yield for West Central Kansas was 42.5 bushels per acre, and

Southwest Kansas was 32.4 bushels per acre. Day 3 covered South Central, Central and Eastern Kansas. The crop was much improved in these areas; however, stripe rust is evident. Many fields have already been sprayed with a fungicide, but if not, rust will decrease yield potential. South Central Kansas' calculated yield was 49.5 bushels per acres. Central Kansas was 47.6, and Eastern Kansas was 46.5. Overall crop yield potential for the state was estimated at 44.5 bushels per acre, 2.5 bushels lower than the USDA estimate of 47. Nebraska Game and Parks cabin, lodge closures extended through June 15 FOR SALE The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will continue cabin, lodge and group activity shelter closures at state park and recreation areas through June 15, with a further possible extension, in a proactive effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The closures are being continued until proper disinfection between reservations can be achieved for the safety of guests and their communi-

ties. “While this may be an inconvenience to those who have reservations for facilities, we want to make sure rentals are safe for our visitors and staff,” said Parks Division Administrator Jim Swenson. “We love seeing our parks and cabins filled with people spending time outdoors, but our top priority at this time has to be the health and safety of all Nebraskans. We will continue to restore services as conditions allow, and

we thank everyone for their patronage and understanding during this difficult time.” If a reservation has been affected by the closure, Game and Parks staff will contact guests directly about a refund or transfer, if applicable. Refunds will be provided to those whose reservations are cancelled. Those with questions about their reservation can contact Game and Parks at outdoornebraska.org/reservation-inquiry. Inquiries are

answered in the order they are received, and response time is dependent upon call volume and available staff. Game and Parks offices, visitor’s centers and welcome centers also are currently closed to public walk-in traffic until further notice, as are playground structures at state park and recreation areas. Game and Parks continues to monitor the public health situation and will phase-in services where possible that com-

ply with guidance issued by local and state health officials. State parks and recreation areas remain open for day use, including fishing, hiking, biking, wildlife viewing, and limited camping services were made available at sites across the state May 22. All permits can be purchased online. For a list of parks or recreation areas that currently offer camping go to outdoornebraska.org/parksfaqs.

Dairy Farmers Partner with Pizza Hut, Giving Half-Million Pizzas to Graduates

Dairy Management Incorporated and its checkoff partner Pizza Hut are joining together to give away half a million pizzas to the Class of 2020 high school graduates. “We are excited to partner with Pizza Hut to help high school seniors and their families celebrate this special milestone in their lives,” says Marilyn Hershey, Chair of DMI, which runs the national dairy checkoff. “This

is a great example of what we accomplish when dairy farmers and importers build relationships with a company like Pizza Hut through our checkoff. The promotion was officially announced on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon last week. “We have a long history of celebrating moments that matter, such as graduations, and Pizza Hut takes pride in being a part of our customers’ big days,” says

George Felix, chief marketing officer for Pizza Hut. “It’s only natural that we’d be there for students and their families to help celebrate the accomplishments of the graduating class of 2020.” They’re also proud to partner with America’s hard-working dairy farmers. To claim a free one-topping medium pizza, go to www. pizzahut.com/gradparty for more information. Coupons will be valid through June 4.

Senate Taking Deliberative Approach to Phase IV COVID Relief Package Though the House- not quite ready to intelli-

We’re

gently lay down the next step, but it’s not too far off.” Meanwhile, Senators have begun crafting their own provisions

with the hopes of inclusion in the next package. Phase IV legislation is expected to carry additional agricultural relief.

Periodically it is interesting to survey what is transacting in the land market outside the grain belt in the middle of the country. The land real estate market in Georgia has continued to be on the slower side even before the Covid-19 effects came into the picture. “There seems to be no discernible difference in sales activity between the period prior to the appearance of Covid-19 and post appearance when looking at the number of sales for each time frame” observed Wayne Groover, managing broker for Farmers National Company. “In our analysis of land sales across the state, selling prices have ranged from a low of $950 per acre for recreational type properties with poor soils or cut over

AND MUCH, MUCH MORE! BRING YOUR LAWN CHAIRS!

timber to a high for the period of $11,000 per acre for transitional or development tracts” Groover said. The analysis covers the period of January 1 to May 15, 2020 for tracts over 50 acres.

The majority of the sales analyzed came from central and northern Georgia. Groover further commented, “The makeup of the type of land being sold was not surprising for the sample in this time period. There was no row crop land that was sold for this area, while 24% was pasture or hay ground used for agricultural purposes with the majority or 62% being wooded recreational land.”

Uncertainty in the economy and agriculture will continue to hover over the land market during the coming months. The market doesn't know if it will see more land come up for sale or people will hold on to it as a real property investment. Conversely, will there be an increase in the number of buyers due to those wanting a safer, longterm investment in land or will the depressed economy siphon out investable income for too many people? NDA Provides Guidance for Restricted Fair Openings and Livestock Show/Events to Slow the Spread of Covid-19

Governor Pete Ricketts announced a new Directed Health Measure (DHM) that will take effect on June 1, 2020 to continue to help slow the spread of COVID-19 in Nebraska.

The DMH provides guidance including requirements that must be met for gatherings at fairgrounds and activities commonly hosted as part of county fairs. In accordance with the DHM, the Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA), in cooperation with representatives of the Nebraska Association of Fair Managers, the Nebraska State Fair,

Nebraska Extension, Nebraska FFA and several local health departments has created guidance documents for county fair officials and livestock show managers to utilize as they work to determine what their event may look like in 2020.

“The county fair and livestock show season is going to look different this year,” said NDA Communications Director Christin Kamm. “As the mother of a 4-Her, I understand the fear and concern that livestock families have been experiencing this spring. The hope of the committee is that these guidelines will allow for por-

Farmers and Ranchers in Kansas Can Now Apply for Financial Assistance through USDA’s Coronavirus Food Assistance Program Agricultural producers can now apply for USDA’s Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP), which provides direct payments to offset impacts from the coronavirus pandemic. The application and a payment calculator are now awvailable online, and USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) staff members are available via phone, fax and online tools to help producers complete applications. The agency set up a call center in order to simplify how they serve new customers across the nation. “We know Kansas producers are facing a tough time now, and we are making every

effort to provide much needed support as quickly as possible,” said David Schemm, State Executive Director for FSA in Kansas. “FSA is available over the phone and virtually to walk you through the application process, whether it’s the first time you’ve worked with FSA, or if you know us quite well.”

Additional Commodities USDA is also establishing a process for the public to identify additional commodities for potential inclusion in CFAP. Specifically, USDA is looking for data on agricultural commodities, that are not currently eligible for CFAP, that the public believes to have either: suffered a five percent-or-greater price decline between mid-January and mid-April as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, shipped but subsequently spoiled due to loss of marketing channel, or not left the farm or remained unharvested as mature crops. All Service Center visitors wishing to conduct business with the FSA, Natural Resources Conservation Service, or any other Service Center agency are required to call their Service Center to schedule a phone appointment. Online Grocery Shopping a New Reality The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the ways shoppers fill their grocery needs. Throughout the pandemic, the Food Marketing Institute has been tracking consumer trends and charting how shopping behaviors are changing. While it’s uncertain how the trends will continue, the pandemic will permanently

change consumer habits. Pre-coronavirus, FMI projected that online food and beverage sales would equate to $143 billion by 2025, representing about 18 percent of an expected overall $800 billion in combined online and in-store spending for food and beverages at home. However, since the pandemic, about 21 percent of Americans have tried online shop-

ping for the first time, eight percent have returned, and 19 percent are continuing to online shop. FMI President and CEO Leslie Sarasin says, “Online grocery shopping is a new reality for our retail and wholesale members.” Research by FMI suggests that not everyone will continue ordering online at the levels they were during the height of the pandemic, but they are likely to continue using it more.

Farmland Prices Continue Decline, Farm Borrowing Increasing The latest Rural Mainstreet Index from Creighton University shows farmland prices are declining while farmer borrowing is growing. Released last week, the overall index for May increased to 12.5 from April's record low 12.1, but down significantly from March's weak 35.5. The index ranges between 0 and 100, with

a reading of 50.0 representing growth neutral. Farmland prices continue to slide as May’s reading fell to 39.7 from April’s 40.9. This is the 77th time in the past 78 months the index has been below growth neutral. The May farm equipment-sales index increased slightly to 21.9 from 20.0 in April.
