Harvest Safety - 2020

Harvest season will soon be underway in part of the state, and the Kansas Highway Patrol would like to remind motorists to use more caution and patience when traveling around farm trucks, tractors, combines, and other implements. Most farm equipment is not designed to travel at highway speeds, and may only travel 15-25 mph. Farm equipment is often wider than other

vehicles, and is sometimes wider than the lane of traffic, so extra room should be allowed when traveling near an implement on the road. Extra caution should be practiced on all roads, but especially on the busy rural roads with unmarked intersections. Tips It is important to share the road safely, for the sake of the farmers out working, and for the motoring public. Tips to keep in mind when sharing Kansas roads with farmers: - Don’t assume the farmer knows you’re there. Most operators

of farm equipment regularly check for vehicles behind them, however, most of their time must be spent looking ahead to stay on the road and watch for oncoming traffic. Implements are very loud, hindering the farmer’s ability to hear your vehicle. - Pass with extreme caution. Don’t pass unless you can see clearly ahead of both your vehicle and the farm equipment you are passing. If there are curves or hills blocking your view of oncoming traffic, wait until you can clearly visualize the area you’re

Courtesy of Kansas Highway Patrol

passing in. You should not pass in a designated “No Passing Zone,” even if you are stuck behind a farm vehicle. Do not pass if you are within 100 feet of any intersection, railroad grade crossing, bridge, elevated structure, or tunnel. - When a farm vehicle pulls to the right side of the road, it does not mean it is turning right or allowing you to pass. Due to the size of some farm equipment, the farmer must execute wide left turns, so allow it plenty of room and time to turn, and be alert to see if there might be a drive-

way or field they may be turning into. - Be patient. Don’t assume that a farmer can move aside to let you pass. Shoulders may be soft, wet, or steep, which can cause the farm vehicle to tip, or the shoulder may not support the weight of a heavy farm vehicle. The farmer understands you are being delayed and will move over at the first safe location available. - Think of the slow moving vehicle emblem as a warning to adjust your speed. When you see the slow moving vehicle emblem, you should

immediately slow down. While the emblems are visible from a long distance away, it is often difficult to judge the speed at which you are closing in on a vehicle, especially at night. - Pay attention. When you are not focused solely on the road, you increase your chances of a collision, especially if you should come upon a slow moving farm vehicle.

find when they travel to Boone, Iowa, for the show is an important event modified to serve this essential industry during a challenging time. "We know that the market is dealing with a lot of issues," says Matt Jungmann, events manager, Farm Progress. "But agriculture is a critical business for this country and farmers are seeking ways to be better at what they do. And nowhere is that more possible than the Farm Progress Show." Important Business Gathering State fairs across the Midwest have had to make the tough decision to cancel for 2020, often driven by the financial burden of losing key money-making components like concerts and midway carnivals.

These are mass gatherings that serve a much different purpose than an Ag tradeshow. Of interest to many is that while the state fairs are canceled, many states and groups are working to hold on to livestock events – further proof that agriculture is essential. What separates Farm Progress Show from a state fair is that this is an important business event for an essential industry where targeted business is conducted between exhibitors and farmers. And in light of the current crisis, farmers are seeking more information and tools to boost profitability than ever before. "The Farm Progress Show is not the place you turn to get the latest deep fried anything," adds Jungmann. "We're focused on providing a venue where farmers can

see new tools, talk to industry experts and work to enhance the way they farm." State and Local Support With support from officials in Iowa, show management is confident that hosting the Farm Progress Show in 2020 is filling an important service. "Farmers are challenged to find better ways to do everything from planting to spraying to harvest," says Don Tourte, senior vice president Farm Progress. "That's not easily done simply by sitting at home attending a virtual event. There's a need to see this equipment up close and gain a better understanding of how it will work in their operations." Tourte adds that the Farm Progress events staff is working closely with a range of Iowa state agencies to ensure the show is conducted in a way that enhances

safety of all those who participate while providing exhibitors the chance to reach key customers. "Our events team has reviewed every aspect of this event with an eye toward exhibitor and visitor safety," says Tourte. "Long-time visitors to the show will see immediate changes the moment they arrive, from one-way streets to more space for physical distancing." Health and Safety Commitments The show staff is working diligently to deliver an impactful and engaging event that prioritizes the health and safety of our visitors and exhibitors. New carefully considered plans for safety precautions and procedures will be introduced for this year’s Farm Progress Show. From easily accessible hand sanitizer stations, to enhanced cleaning procedures for buildings and facilities, changes to the event are working to enhance safety for all participants. The show has a long-time history of safe operation, while offering visitors the most extensive gathering of exhibitors in the country.

Farm Progress parent company, Informa, which annually holds more than 600 in-person and virtual content-driven events, and to continue that effort has worked with a range of industry and event association partners to create AllSecure, a set of enhanced standards and guidelines to provide the highest level of hygiene and safety at all Informa’s events. Farm Progress Show will be organized in accordance with the AllSecure standard, providing visitors and exhibitors with reassurance and confidence they are participating in a safe and controlled environment. "It's hard to quantify the amount of work that has gone into creation of these standards," says Jungmann. "The key for farmers, exhibitors and all who plan to attend is that your safety is critical at our events. That's really always been true, but AllSecure adds that needed, extra layer during a pandemic. We're excited to host farmers in Boone this year."

USDA: Commodity Purchases Reach $2.2 Billion Through Aid Program The Department of Agriculture announced the purchases of more than $2.2 billion of food items for fiscal years 2019 and 2020. The purchases are part of the ongoing efforts to feed people in need and assist American farmers and ranchers suffering from damage due to unjustified trade retaliation by foreign nations. USDA is on target to reach its fiscal year goal of about $1.4 billion of trade mitigation purchases in the next phase of fiscal year purchasing, which ends September 30. The purchases were made through the Food Purchase and Distri-

bution Program, one of USDA’s three programs in its Support Packages for Farmers. Most of the food purchased is provided to states for distribution to nutrition assistance programs such as The Emergency Food Assistance Program and child nutrition programs. The purchases include meat, fruits, vegetables, specialty crops and dairy products. The Food Purchase and Distribution Program was established in fiscal year 2019 to assist U.S. producers by purchasing commodities that have been unfairly targeted by trade partners.

The Department of Agriculture has processed more than 220,000 Coronavirus Food Assistance Program payments to farmers and ranchers. In a weekly update, USDA data shows the department has issued $2.8 billion to farmers so far, with Iowa producers receiving the most, at $144 million for row crops, and $150 million for livestock. Iowa also accounts for the highest number of non-specialty crop applications, at more than 20,000. USDA says some 112,000 non-specialty crop producers nationally have received more than $758 mil-

Exports to China Not Sudoku Solution on Page 7 Meeting Expectations Exports to China are lagging, according to Agricultural Economic Insights. Agricultural Economist David Widmar says before the trade war, soybean exports accounted for 51 percent of all U.S. ag exports to China. He writes, “Based on the first four months of 2020, trade with China has been disappointing.” After $778 million in sales in January, soybeans have mostly stalled as total 2020 sales reached $1.2 billion through April. lion, while roughly 1,500 specialty crop growers have received $53 million. Payments to livestock producers total $1.4 billion, while payments to the dairy sector total $667 million. The Coronavirus Food Assistance Program provides financial assistance to producers of agricultural commodities with financial support that gives them

the ability to absorb sales losses and increased marketing costs associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. USDA will continue to accept applications for the program through August 28, 2020. Resources for farmers regarding the payments are available at www.farmers.gov/ cfap.

come as the U.S. and China signed a Phase One trade agreement that included aggressive purchases of U.S. commodities by China. Through April, purchases of total U.S. ag products approached $4.6 billion, in line with 2019’s $4.3 billion figure. Yet, pre-trade war levels over the same time period in 2017 totaled $7.1 billion. China’s purchases are seasonal, with a flurry of activity early this year, and typically large purchases in the fall. Widmar says that before the trade war, China purchased 57 percent of total annual soybeans between October and December.

ROOTS AND CHUTES

Alyssa Rippe-May, Twin Creeks Extension District Agent - Livestock and Farm Management

The Chute…“Kansas Farm Management Summaries Released for 2019” The Kansas Farm Management Association (KFMA) just released their 2019 Summary Book, providing all of us with a window into the “average” Kansas farm. Our Northwest KFMA economists, based out of Colby, analyzed 123 of their members’ operations spanning their 17-county region in our corner of the state. In 2019, the average net farm income increased for the fourth year in a row to $127,244 after hitting an historical low in 2015. However, taking a closer look at

that number, the KFMA economists show that an average of $85,345, or 67%, came from the Market Facilitation Program from the USDA, created to help mitigate the effects of trade disputes. As the economists broke down the farms further into profit quartiles, they found a drastic range between the most profitable farms and the least profitable farms. The most profitable 25% had an average net farm income of $451,803. Meanwhile, the least profitable 25% lost $79,726. Crops had largely strong yields in the area in 2019 with the exception of irrigated crops. Livestock was a different story, as we all know. With the struggle through the 2019 winter and high calf death loss, returns were low. For Northwest KFMA members, the average weaned calf returns were just $16 above variable costs and the average feeder calf returns were $131 above variable costs. This data certainly doesn’t paint a rosy picture here in Northwest Kansas, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t useful. Can you use your own numbers to compare and eval-

uate your farm financial picture? KFMA breaks down their data by type of farm, meaning you can compare your farm to similar farms, such as dryland only operations, livestock operations with beef cows selling weaned calves, livestock operations with beef cows selling feeder calves, etc. In this time of increased uncertainty around the world, it’s even more important to use these numbers as a benchmark for your own operation. Use it as a guide to determine what enterprises on your farm are working, what might need some tweaking to be more profitable, and what might be worth letting go. See the entire 2019 Summary Book at the AgManager.info website under the KFMA tab or contact your local Twin Creeks District Office. “Willie’s Farm Family” I’m going to end this column on a much cheerier note and announce that we have some exciting news in the Twin Creeks Extension District! K-State Research and Extension has partnered with K-State Football for the first Celebrate Agriculture Day. We will honor one Willie’s Farm Family from each of our Twin Creeks District counties with

Norton County Community Foundation Announces MatchDay 2020 for July 29, 2020

Norton County Community Foundation (NCCF) has announced the date for its third annual Norton County Match Day. MatchDay 2020 will be held on Wednesday, July 29 from 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM in the Heaton Building in Norton, KS. MatchDay is a giving event designed to raise awareness and support for non-profits and charitable organizations in Norton County. NCCF has committed $20,000 to match the donations that organizations receive on MatchDay. A complete set of match rules/guidelines can be found on NCCF’s website at www.nortonccf.org/ matchday2020. Nonprofit or charitable organization with endowed funds at NCCF are eligible to participate. Organizations have until June 26, 2020 to establish this fund and are encouraged to call the office to discuss options. Applications to participate are due by June 26, 2020 and can be found on NCCF’s website at www.nortonccf.org/ matchday2020. A final list of participating organizations will be made available to the public after the application deadline of June 26 has passed. On MatchDay 2020, participating organizations will be invited - but not required - to set up a table in the Hea-

ton Building to help raise money for their organizations. Donors can make an in-person donation at the Heaton Building between the hours of 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM on July 29, 2020 or an online donation via NCCF’s website at www.nortonccf.org/ matchday2020. Online donations will be accepted between from 12:00 AM to 11:59:59 PM on July 29, 2020. “We’re looking forward to this year’s MatchDay and are excited to present the community with both an in-person and online option for giving,” said Tara Vance, Executive Director of Norton County Community Foundation. “We changed the participation requirements this year so that only organizations with endowed funds at NCCF can participate. We’re excited about the number of organizations who are thinking long-term and committing to endowing funds for the betterment and sustainability of their organizations.” For more information about MatchDay 2020, please contact Tara Vance at 785.874.5106 or tara@nortonccf.org.
