Grasshoppers! Permethrin (numerous trade names) is a good choice for vegetable crops because it is labeled for a wide variety of vegetables. However, keep in mind that hoppers can reinfest an area relatively quickly. Many times gardeners have not had an insecticide failure, but a reinfestation. Carbaryl (Sevin) can also be used for grasshopper control but can lead to mite outbreaks as it is very toxic to mite predators.

Some gardeners may be interested in organic controls. Nosema locustae, a protozoan, is the active ingredient in a number of products including Semaspore, NOLO Bait, HopperStopper and Grasshopper Attack. These products are selective and will affect only grasshoppers. This is a trait many gardeners find attractive. However, Nosema locustae products may not be as effective in garden situations as they would be under large-scale rangeland conditions due to potential reinfestations from outside the treat-

Restaurant Traffic Stalls Amid Increase in COVID-19 Cases The recovery of U.S. restaurant customer transactions has stalled for the second week in a row as COVID-19 cases continue to increase in many states, according to research firm NPD Group. For the week ending June 28, total customer transactions at major U.S. restaurant chains are down 14 percent versus the same week a year ago. For the week ending June 21, total transactions were down 13 percent ver-

sus a year ago. The rise in COVID-19 case counts is causing local and state authorities to delay reopening, and in some cases, reinstating on-premise restaurant dining restrictions. In Texas, for example, restaurants may continue to offer on-premise dining, but capacity is rolled back from 75 percent to 50 percent. California announced last week the closing of its nearly 86,000 restaurants to on-premise dining. Nationwide, full-service restaurants

Ag Economy Barometer Shows Some Optimism Farmer sentiment improved again in June as the Purdue University-CME Group Ag Economy Barometer rose 14 points to 117. The barometer's rise was fueled by improvements in both the Index of Current Conditions, which rose to a reading of 99, 19 percent higher than a month earlier, and the Index of Future Expectations, which climbed to 126, 12 percent higher than in May. The improvement in farmer sentiment left the Ag Economy Barometer

seven percent below one year earlier, while the Index of Future Expectations was still ten percent below its June 2019 level. However, the Index of Current Conditions was two percent higher than in June 2019, likely reflecting considerably improved spring planting conditions throughout much of the nation, in addition to support from USDA's Coronavirus Food Assistance Program. Four out of ten farmers surveyed said that as a result of concerns about COVID-19, they are conducting more business online, and over half of respondents said they are less likely to attend in-person educational events in 2020.

Nebraska farm real estate values increase for first time since 2014 Nebraska agricultural land values increased by 3 percent over the last year, to a statewide average of $2,725 per acre, according to the final results of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s 2020 Farm Real Estate Report. This marks the first annual increase since land values in the state peaked at $3,315 per acre in 2014. Survey participants reported that 1031 tax exchanges, non-farmer investor interest in land purchases and current interest rate levels contributed to higher market values. These forces were reported as slightly positive in impacting future land values prior to the domestic outbreak of COVID-19.

and 4 percent, while the values of gravity and center pivot irrigated cropland rose 1 percent and 3 percent, respectively. However, the Northwest and Southwest Districts saw declines between 2 percent and 5 percent for the two land classes.

Grazing land and hayland value estimates also rose between 2 percent and 5 percent over the last year, with slight declines in two districts. Major cow-calf pair regions, including the Northwest, North and Central Districts, led the increase in market values, with growth between 6 percent and 8 percent.

Many cash rental rates in Nebraska were set prior to the economic shocks caused by COVID-19. The survey collection period for the Nebraska Farm Estimated dryland crop- Real Estate Report may land values in the state partially reflect these rates rose between 3 percent and not account for possible adjustments. and tenants might consider amending contracts to account for these shocks or consider the use of alternative lease arrangements.

The Nebraska Farm Real Estate Report is an annual survey conducted by the university’s Department of Agricultural Economics of land professionals including appraisers, farm and ranch managers and agricultural bankers. Results from the survey are divided by land class and agricultural statistic districts. Land values and rental rates presented in the report are averages of survey participants' responses by district. Actual land values and rental rates may vary depending upon the quality of the parcel and local market for an area. The final report is available at agecon.unl.edu/realestate.

Norton County Community Foundation Awards $6,788 in June Grant Cycle Norton County Community Foundation (NCCF) awarded $6,788.00 to Norton County nonprofit organizations and charitable projects in the June grant cycle. These funds were part of the Dane G. Hansen Community Grant Fund, which offers financial support to qualifying and deserving projects and programs in Northwest Kansas. Grant funds supported the following organization and project: -City of Norton, c/o Norton Travel & Tourism to help support the Prairie Dog State Park Adobe Home Restoration Project. -The Adobe Home, located at Prairie Dog State Park, was constructed in 1892 and is the only known adobe house sitting on its origi-

nal site in Kansas. While renovations have been completed throughout the years since the Adobe Home was built, the last major renovation was completed in 1997. Over the past 23 years, weather has taken a toll on this structure, and it is in need of a new roof and siding repairs. “This project is important to our community and current CVB-Travel & Tourism board,” said Donna Eastman Liddle, President & CEO, Norton Area Chamber of Commerce and Travel & Tourism. “This grant will assist the City of Norton Travel & Tourism to complete renovations needed to restore this important historic and cultural gem.” “The grant selection committee was eager to fund this project,” said Tara Vance, NCCF

Executive Director. “The Adobe Home is an important part of our local history, and we appreciate Travel & Tourism for their efforts in preserving and promoting the site.” The guidelines and application for the Hansen Community Grant can be found on NCCF’s website at nortonccf.org. Applications are due the first day of every month to be considered for that month’s funding. For more information, please contact Tara Vance at 785.874.5106, tara@ nortonccf.org, or visit the NCCF office at the Heaton Building in Downtown Norton, located at 112 S. Kansas in Norton, Kansas.

USDA Provides New Crop Insurance Options The Department of Agriculture this week announced changes to several crop insurance policies that the agency says improves options for producers. USDA introduced the Quality Loss Option, a new unit structure assignment

option for Enterprise Units and new procedures for Multi-County Enterprise Units. Risk Management Agency Administrator Martin Barbre says the changes “provide producers more flexibility and options” to farmers. The new Quality Loss Option is in response to

State Line Shopper

the 2018 Farm Bill that required the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation to research and develop methods of adjusting for quality losses. The new Quality Loss Option allows producers to replace post-quality production amounts in their Actual Production History databases with pre-quality production amounts, thereby increasing their

actual yields for individual crop years. For Enterprise Units and Multi-County Enterprise Units, a new unit structure assignment option was added. Crop insurance is sold and delivered solely through private crop insurance agents. Learn more about the changes at rma.usda.gov.
