Of the current buzzwords coming through media, and through the grapevine, is VSV, or vesicular stomatitis virus. This contagious virus was first confirmed

in Butler County on June 16, and it has spread to other counties. Vesicular stomatitis does not normally kill affected animals, but it can cause economic losses for

livestock producers by preventing animal movements and impacting international trade. Farms with affected animals are quarantined until 14 days after lesions appear on the last case at that location. Quarantine periods can be lengthy if the disease continues to spread within the premises. Quarantines are not lifted until a veterinarian has examined all susceptible animals on the premises. This virus primarily affects horses, but can also affect cattle, sheep, goats, swine, llamas and alpacas. At this time, there are confirmed cases of VSV in

Kansas in horses and cattle. Horse and livestock owners should continue to be watchful of symptoms and be in communication with their veterinarian if there is cause for concern. The incubation period for vesicular stomatitis is two to eight days. The first sign of illness is often excessive salivation, caused by the lesions in the mouth. The blisters will swell and break open, which causes mouth pain, discomfort, and reluctance to eat or drink, leading to severe weight loss. Lesions or scabs will appear on the muzzle, lips, ears, coronary bands and ventral abdomen. If the coronary

bands of the hooves are affected, then lameness can occur. A spike in body temperature before or at the same time lesions first appear can be noticed. This is a painful virus and can be costly to manage. Because insects that are the primary source of infection, the best way to combat the slow spread is to take aggressive steps to limit exposure to biting flies, ticks and midges. It can also be spread by nose-to-nose contact between animals. Establish insect control measures that consider the animal as well as the area the livestock reside in. The virus itself usually runs its course in five to seven days, and it can take up to an additional seven days for the infected animal to recover from the symptoms. There are no approved vaccines for VSV. Humans are rarely affected with the disease, though it is possible for humans to contract it when handling infected animals. VSV can cause flu-like symptoms if infected saliva gets into an open wound, eyes, or mouth. People handling potentially infected animals should wear gloves for protection, and talk with a physician if they have questions. The largest concern with the spread of vesicular stomatitis is the impact it will

July 20, 2020

have on the markets, leading to impacts on the price of meat. The movement of livestock is already being restricted; Arkansas requires an Entry Permit number for all hoof stock originating from a county or neighboring county of any VSV quarantined facility in any affected state. Other states and Canada are likely to increase restrictions on live livestock imports. Animal health officials strongly encourage all livestock owners and veterinarians to call the animal health authority in the destination location for the most current import requirements prior to

travel.

Gov. Ricketts, Game & Parks Commission Encourage Nebraskans to Enjoy the Great Outdoors Recently, Governor Pete Ricketts hosted a press conference with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission to highlight opportunities for outdoor recreation in the Cornhusker State. “If you’re looking to enjoy the great outdoors, Nebraska’s state parks, historical parks, and recreation areas provide a wealth of opportunities for socially-distanced fun,” said Gov. Ricketts. “Nebraska has more miles of rivers and streams than any other state, with plenty of places to go kayaking, tanking, and floating. We’re also a top destination for anglers. Our rivers and lakes are home to lots of different fish including walleye, catfish, bluegill, white bass, largemouth bass, crappies, and more. Susanne and I encourage all Nebraskans to get outdoors and explore Nebraska in the coming weeks and months.” The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission oversees eight state parks, ten historical parks, and around 60 other recreation areas. “With state parks and recreation areas across the state, we have abundant opportunities for families to make memories and enjoy their favorite activities at their state parks,” said Parks Division Administrator Jim Swenson. “Whether you’re seeking the ultimate modern conveniences in a picturesque outdoor setting or want to get back to nature amid the natural beauty of Nebraska’s wild places, our state parks are here for you.” The Commission has reopened activities with the health and safety of the public and State teammates in mind. It is reminding people to practice responsible recreation while they

are having fun spending time outdoors. This means staying home when sick, avoiding crowded areas, maintaining physical distancing, and abiding by local directed health measures. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission opened designated swimming areas and public beaches in June, and it opened pools at state parks the first weekend in July. The Commission began offering limited lodging reservations in late June. Additionally, educational and interpretive centers have reopened to the public. Camping is now open at all park and wildlife management areas. Guests can make reservations for overnight camping on the Commission’s website, or find first-come, firstserve camping spots at parks located across the state. The Game & Parks Commission’s Take ‘em Fishing Contest is currently underway. Anglers can participate by introducing a friend or family member to fishing, taking a picture, and uploading it online at outdoornebraska.gov/ fishinggiveaway. The commission is drawing for prizes through the end of October, including the grand prize Bass Tracker Classic fishing boat from Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s. To learn more about the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, visit its website at outdoornebraska.gov.

NO FAIR??? – NOT FAIR!!! By Patsy L. Maddy and this past year memTwin Creeks Extension District bers have seen #TCD4-H Youth Development Agent ProjectChallenges sent

For many communities in our western Kansas area, home owned carnivals have made the decision to not set up taking into consideration the health and safety of their communities, expenses related to insurance and inspections and the lack of volunteers available to assist with operations. For many, there have been comments related to the ‘fair’ being cancelled and the disappointment in families and youth not getting to socialize during the highlight event of the year for their communities. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to the other half of the ‘fair’ – the 4-H/FFA showcase for a year of project learning! Have you ever wondered where the animals come from at the fair, or all of the other creative exhibits seen in exhibit buildings? It’s called the Kansas 4-H program – the largest national youth organization found in every county in the state of Kansas. These youth 4-H programs function under the umbrella of K-State Research and Extension which brings education from the University to the people in our communities. 4-H members enroll in this program in October and choose project areas related to their interests. Many project areas rely on self-study and some have adult project leaders who conduct learning experiences,

out to them in several project areas to expand and ‘challenge’ them to sometimes step out of their comfort zone to learn. After discovering new educational information about their projects, youth choose something they can physically exhibit to showcase their learning at the local county fair. As a 4-H Youth Development Agent for Twin Creeks Extension District covering Norton, Decatur, Sheridan and Graham counties, I take great pride in the accomplishments of each one of our 4-H youth! This past 2020 Covid-19 year has provided many challenges for our youth, families, volunteers and agents in continuing to provide a positive youth experience for all. Restricted face-to-face contact required club members, council members and some project groups to continue meeting virtually via a Zoom platform. These youths are resilient and have overcome many of the obstacles dealt them. This year’s 4-H/ FFA exhibit side of the ‘fair’ will be present in each of our four counties, but will definitely look different because of safety precautions we choose to recommend to 4-H families, volunteers, and staff, as well as the general public. Time at the fair has been shortened to reduce face-toface interactions as well as recommending social distancing throughout all county fair events. Each county will conduct activities in different manners, but the goal is to provide a positive experience for our youth

State Line Shopper

in showcasing their exhibits they have worked hard to complete. Our amusement groups and fair boards in each of our counties are very well respected and admired in western Kansas for their commitment and dedication in providing entertainment for surrounding communities. We simply need to remember that ‘this is hopefully one year of adjustment’ in adapting to current circumstances and considering life lessons learned. Youth and adult board members making these hard decisions are keeping in mind the impact their decisions make on the entire community and are not taking their volunteer roles lightly. Many scenarios have been weighed into this decision making process. Below is a listing of tentative dates for our county fairs, but please watch for details as we work to finalize schedules that could possibly change in the blink of an eye. Norton County Fair - Begins July 13th with pre-fair events and ends July 25th

Sheridan County Fair - Begins July 15th with pre-fair events and ends July 25th Graham County Free Fair - Begins July 18th with pre-fair events and ends July 29th Decatur County Fair Begins August 1st with pre-fair events and ends August 8th Watch Twin Creeks Extension District Website and Facebook and county 4-H Facebook pages listed below for updates or changes in schedules. Our county fairs will have a different look

and feel to them in the

upcoming weeks. Please take the time to consider all of the hard decisions made by our youth in “Making the Best Better” given the current circumstances. K-State Research and Extension encourages social distancing among all participants and spectators. In order to help us keep the spread of COVID-19 to a minimum and to keep our 4-her’s healthy, we ask that anyone showing any symptoms or feeling ill, please stay home! We thank you for your continued support of our youth and 4-H programs and look forward

to a great 2020-2021 program year! Twin Creeks Extension District Website https://www.twincreeks.k-state.edu/

Shoppers Still Fear Empty Grocery Shelves, Seek Bargains A recent survey finds grocery shoppers are looking for bargains, and half of consumers fear empty grocery shelves. Marketing agency Acosta says 53 percent of shoppers say product availability is a top priority. The American Farm Bureau Federation last week reported beef and pork supply chains are recovering from the pandemic panic buying. However, the industry needs to work through a backlog of slaughter ready animals. Meanwhile, more than one-third of shoppers are worse off financially than they were before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Brought to you every week by a partnership between:

The report says low prices will be a priority for 45 percent of shoppers post-pandemic. Acosta CEO Darian Pickett says, “A recession is here and will significantly impact the shopping habits of those affected.” Pickett says product availability remains a concern and shopper are focusing on health, wellness and safety more than ever. The survey also shows consumer priorities of social distancing, low prices, customer safety and promotions and deals on grocery products.
