brain and body contain a ‘treat system’ whose purpose is to help you to stay alive. One part of your brain – the amygdala – has the job of identifying dangers. It is triggered by anything that could threaten your life – and sets off an ‘alarm’ in your body to help you to get ready to respond. After a traumatic experience, like admission to ICU, it is normal for your threat system to stay on high alert for some time afterward. For people who have PTSD it seems to take even longer to return to normal. Luckily, there are excellent evidence-bases psychological treatments
for PTSD, including, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which assists you in providing exposure to your trauma members, making meaning of what happened to you, and learning different coping skills to manage symptoms and reclaim your life. Women’s outdoor subscription boxes offered through pilot program A pilot program is providing Nebraska women the opportunity to purchase subscription boxes designed to help them develop and expand their outdoor skills. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission; Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism; and Iowa Department of Natural Resources have joined Becoming an Outdoors-Woman and Women in the Outdoors in creating this opportunity. Each subscription box, which will include gear, educational resources, field guides and more, can be pur-
chased for $50. No longterm commitment is required. Participants pay only for the boxes they want to receive. Box themes will change seasonally. The first box, for September, will highlight pheasant hunting. It will contain game shears, a fillet knife, blaze orange hat, shotgun cleaning kit and pheasant recipes. The items will be accompanied by a learning objective. Subscribers will have access to online webinars that teach skills using the tools in the box. Each quarter, a box will feature a new outdoor skill to learn. Orders for the September box are being accepted through Aug. 14 at sgooutdoors.com. The October
box will feature birding. Future boxes will highlight outdoor cooking, pollinators and fishing. “We hope the purchase of these boxes will result in ladies learning a new outdoor skill, even if we can’t get together for formal in-person events because of COVID-19,” said Julia Plugge, Game and Parks outdoor education specialist. “Down the road, we hope these subscribers will purchase licenses, join outdoor-related organizations and attend events when the conditions are appropriate.” For more information, contact Plugge at julia. plugge@nebraska.gov or 402-471-6009.

K-State vets: Watch for summer respiratory condition in calves When talking to ranchers about cattle health concerns in the summer, fly control and pinkeye will often come to mind, but one condition that can lead to calf death is pre-weaning pneumonia. “Research has shown that pre-weaning calf pneumonia appears in about 20% of the herds in the country annually,” said Brad White, K-State veterinarian and director of the Beef Cattle Institute. “Of that 20%, there is a group that experience significant problems.” White and veterinary colleague Bob Larson discussed their role in the study and the results during a recent
Cattle Chat podcast. “This pneumonia peaks when the calf is about four and a half months old, so for spring born calves we typically see the condition appearing in July and August,” White said. Larson said that often pre-weaning pneumonia appears first in some of the bigger, stronger calves in the pasture. White explained that the larger calves tend to be the older calves, and the natural immunity that they got from their dam’s colostrum at birth is starting to fade.

PHILLIPS COUNTY REPUBLICAN WOMEN The Phillips County Republican Women are a group who meet over the lunch hour every other month to discuss political views and ideas for our county, state, and country. As news is announced regarding the views expressed by those holding various offices, all in attendance are able to share their thoughts and feelings on how or what, if anything, could or should be done. Many items of interest are, of course, more local in nature, such as the position of County Clerk, however, some discussion does emanate all the way to Congress and the White
House. In the past, we have held candidate forums, political speeches, luncheons, etc., hosting several candidates in the local arena, as well as the state and national levels. Some of these candidates have held offices as Mayor, Sheriff, House of Representatives, and Congress. If you are interested in attending a meeting to check us out, please call 785-543-6561 to find out the date and time of our next meeting. Sue Miller President

Task Force Releases New Industry Long Range Plan for Beef The Beef Industry Long Industry Objectives: that align with Checkoff Range Plan task force officially introduced its new five-year plan for 20212025 today at the Cattle Industry Summer Business Meeting in Denver. The task force's mission is to ensure the long-term prosperity of the U.S. beef industry by sustainably producing the most trusted, highest quality and consistently satisfying protein for consumers around the world. "We want beef to be the protein of choice, and we want the entire U.S. beef industry to be trusted and respected for its commitment to quality, safety, and sustainability," said Kim Brackett, leader of the task force and cow/ calf rancher from Idaho. "The task force invested many hours, discussing the current state of the industry and what we need to accomplish over the next five years. We feel we've established some important priorities and strategies, as well as benchmarks for success that will help keep our industry on track through 2025 and beyond." The Beef Industry Long Range Plan Updated every five years, the Beef Industry Long Range Plan is a tool designed to help the beef industry establish a common set of objectives and priorities. It communicates the industry's strategic direction and provides insight on how the industry can serve its stakeholders by growing beef demand. Since 1995, industry leaders have gathered to develop an aligned, comprehensive plan with the goal of increasing consumer demand for beef. These leaders are brought together to study and compile major areas of opportunity facing beef over the next five years. The 2021-2025 Beef Industry Long Range Plan includes the following key priorities and core strategies:
1. Grow global demand for U.S. beef by promoting beef 's health and nutritional benefits, satisfying flavor and unparalleled safety. 2. Improve industry-wide profitability by expanding processing capacity and developing improved value-capture models. 3. Intensify efforts in researching, improving, and communicating U.S. beef industry sustainability. 4. Make traceability a reality in the U.S. beef industry. Core Strategies: 1. Drive growth in beef exports. 2. Grow consumer trust in beef production. 3. Develop and implement better business models to improve price discovery and value distribution across all segments. 4. Promote and capitalize on the multiple advantages of beef. 5. Improve the business and political climate for beef. 6. Safeguard and cultivate investment in beef industry research, marketing and innovation. "We'll measure the plan's success by tracking key metrics for each Core Strategy," Brackett said. "For example, one of the measures for the Core Strategy to 'Drive growth in beef exports' will be to grow the value of U.S. beef exports as a percent of total beef value to 21% by 2025. Additionally, there are a number of other goals to help measure success specific to the other core strategies." How The Beef Industry Uses The Long Range Plan The Long Range Plan Task Force encourages other beef industry businesses and organizations to utilize the plan as input for their own strategic decision making processes. For example, the Beef Checkoff, its committees, and contracting organizations, use pieces of the Long Range Plan as their guidebook. All funding decisions and focus areas of Checkoff projects and programs, by design, must follow the key areas outlined in the plan
budget categories: promotion, research, consumer information, industry information, producer communication and foreign marketing. To ensure this focus, each year Checkoff committees continue to renew their alignment by identifying key plan initiatives as their priorities based on current industry needs. Checkoff contractors take this direction and develop Checkoff-funded programs that fall within the scope of the Beef Promotion and Research Act and Order and support the plan's priorities. The Beef Industry Long Range Plan Task Force The task force convened several times over the past year and considered all aspects of the industry from production trends, economic factors, foreign markets, consumer trends, and the competitive climate. The group evaluated the previous five-year plan and determined, based on industry trends and insights, where the industry should maintain and/or shift focus over the next five years. In addition to Brackett, other members of the task force are also individuals representing key beef industry segments and devoted to ensuring the beef industry's long-term success: • Dr. Keith Belk, Department Head Animal Science, Colorado State University (Fort Collins, CO) • Andy Bishop, Fairfield Farms, (Cox's Creek, KY) • Tim Brady, Director of Risk Management, Agri Beef Co. (Boise, ID) • Donnell Brown, Owner/Manager, R.A. The leader of the Kansas 4-H program said that looking at the organization’s past is one way that it will overcome the challenges it has faced the past several months. Like so many other groups, Kansas 4-H had to adapt its programs quickly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Only recently – July 5, nearly four months since much of the United States first closed down – has the organization been given a green light to resume some in-person activities. Wade Weber, the state leader for Kansas 4-H, said two showcase events – the county and state fairs – are examples in which youth and families have had to adapt quickly. “We have a rich history

of young people being involved in their community, and learning to work together to be problem solvers, innovative and creative,” Weber said. “We’ve always worked to expand opportunities for young people to belong to their local 4-H program, all the way back to our beginning in 1905.” Weber cited a familiar quote from the state’s first 4-H leader, Otis Hall, who said: “We're not trying to make farmers out of all these youth. We don't care how many hogs or cabbages they raise; it's the youth we're interested in. We're trying to build self-reliance, good judgment and character. For many, 4-H is a stepping stone for those larger life skills.”
Hall, who created the 4-H Pledge that is recited in every club across the country, led Kansas’ program during stressful times: World War I and the 1919 Spanish Flu pandemic. Weber said today’s 4-H leaders, volunteers and youth can benefit from his wise words. “I think it really speaks to us 100 years later about the resiliency they were developing, and how they were trying to develop young people,” he said. “I think it’s something for us to be encouraged by as we think about moving forward.” Weber said Kansas 4-H members and volunteers can also draw strength from another former leader, Glenn Busset, who helped steer the program through

Busset believed that empathy and drive are two critical elements when times are tough. “Empathy is the important central ability to feel as the other person does. Drive is the energy to want to do something,” Busset said. “There must be a delicate balance between empathy and drive. Too much empathy with too little drive will lead to little accomplishment. Conversely, too much drive with too little empathy will often bulldoze and harm others in pursuit of accomplishments in order to fulfill their own ego.”

How to plan successful fishing trip
Having a successful fishing trip depends on how you plan for success. Planning will help regardless if your goal is to catch a state record fish, or escape from chores for the day. Remember that some days we catch fish on bare hooks, while others days we just go fishing. Prepare and plan to have fun and you will never be disappointed. The following are few planning tips and hints: Plan where to fish – Nebraska has more than 200 lakes that are open the public. Each of these is listed in the Nebraska Fishing Guide with a description of the location, amenities and the fish present. This guide and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission website – OutdoorNebraska.
org – include a listing of Family Friendly Lakes and those that are accessible. These locations are sure to be comfortable and most likely good fish-catching opportunity.
Plan to be safe and comfortable – In the summer, fishing during the middle of the day can be hot and a sun-burning experience. Consider such conditions and plan accordingly; bring sunscreen, water and a shade shelter. Or, wait until it cools off in the evening when the fish also are more active. If you are sneaking off to fish on your own at a remote lake, let someone know your plans. Plan your equipment – Depending on what you want to catch, or more important, what you want to carry, will help decide what to include. You really only need a stick with a string and hook. But re-
ally, just take one or two fishing poles per angler and basic gear. Keep the tackle simple for what you want to catch. Leave the huge tackle box at home or in the car. A long-nosepliers and nail clippers are handy tools that fit into a small pack with the rest of your tackle. Plan to have fun – Essential fishing trip items should always include the things that make the trip an enjoyable adventure. The first item is an expectation of fun whatever the fishing outcome. Equipment and supplies that make it an enjoyable adventure include snacks and drinks, field guides for birds, or mushrooms, or whatever your interest, lawn chairs, a ball or Frisbee to burn off extra energy, and a Plan B for when conditions change. Plan a Plan B – Nearly every lake in Nebraska is near a small town that can
invasive species, could introduce diseases to local plants, or could be harmful to livestock. Invasive species wreak havoc on the environment, displace or destroy native plants and insects and severely damage crops. KDA works to prevent the introduction of invasive species and protect Kansas agriculture.

offer adventure. The local diner likely will serve a fish dinner to replace the fish you didn’t catch or chose not to keep. Hide from the heat or rain in a junk shop in search of a memento for the day. Accomplish Great Park Pursuit stops while traveling to and from your fishing destination. Regardless of what you ended up doing, your fishing trip was more memorable than the chores you left for tomorrow. If you are just getting into fishing and want more details on planning a fishing adventure, a helpful resource for all things beginner is Game and Parks’ Going Fishing Guide, available at OutdoorNEbraska.gov/howtofish.
