USDA Announces More Eligible Commodities for CFAP
The Department of Agriculture Tuesday added additional commodities to the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program. USDA also extended the deadline to September 11 for producers to apply for the program, a request by agriculture organizations. The changes follow USDA review of more than 1,700 responses from the public. The announcement expands the types of specialty crops covered under the program, as well as liquid eggs, frozen eggs and all sheep, and aquaculture and horticulture products. Agriculture Secretary Son-
ny Perdue says the announcement shows, "President Trump is standing with America's farmers and ranchers to ensure they get through this pandemic." USDA says the changes will give more farmers and ranchers the opportunity for assistance to help keep operations afloat. Farm groups, including the American Farm Bureau Federation, requested the
changes in a recent letter to Secretary Perdue. The coalition cited the low number of participants and that roughly half of the near $16 billion of aid is still available.

Beginner angler’s guide to rod, reel and line By Larry Pape Nebraska Game and Parks Commission
How much time do you want to spend untangling your fishing line? Zero, none, never! While I cannot guarantee you a tangle-free life, there are ways to help spend more time fishing, and it starts by using the right gear for the conditions and your skill level. If you are teaching a beginning angler, here is what they need to know about rods, reels and line. Reels There are four types of fishing reels. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages: • Most spin-casting reels, also known as close-face reels, operate with the push and release of a button. The line seldom comes off the spool in a tangle. There are few exposed parts to break. The price and quality can be anywhere from disposable to heirloom. Perfect. Old anglers, once they have shed their egos, often come back to use the ones they learned to fish with. Buy one of these for your kids and save it for your grandchildren. • Spinning reels look cool with the bail spinning the string on the spool as the handle is cranked. In the right hands, the spinning reel can cast farther than any other type as the line just falls off the end of the spool. These take a little more finesse, but
can be used successfully by practiced beginners. • A bait-casting reel often is a finely crafted machine in which the line comes off a spool that spins as you cast. The problem is, because the spool can keep spinning after you cast, a huge tangle called a bird’s nest can happen. These reels are efficient for long days of fishing, but are not best for beginners. • A fly-fishing reel just holds string while not in use; it doesn’t help in casting. Unless you are angling with a special fly rod, you will not need this. Rods The fishing rod should match the reel type to ensure the rod functions correctly. By purchasing a rod and reel combo, in which both pieces of
equipment already are fit together, you will guarantee to get a match. The combo comes in a light, medium or heavy action. A light action rod will work best for lightweight bluegill, crappie and trout. Bass, carp and channel catfish can usually be handled with a medium or medium-heavy action setups. The only time to consider using a heavy action rod is if you are going after a giant flathead catfish or snagging a paddlefish. Line Fishing line also should match the reel size and type. Line is rated for how much weight it takes to break (test strength), and bigger is not better. Monofilament line that is 4- to 8-pound test is best for light-action gear, 10- to 20-pound test for
medium action, and 20-pound test up to line that looks like weed-whacker string for heavy-action gear. Super-strength braided string requires special knots and considerations and is more expensive. If you are just getting into fishing, a helpful resource for all things beginner is Game and Parks’ Going Fishing Guide, available at OutdoorNEbraska. gov/howtofish. If you want to take a new angler fishing and become eligible to win prizes, register for the Take ’em Fishing Challenge at Outdo orNebraska.org, where fishing permits also are available for purchase.

2020 Change Reflections By Patsy L. Maddy Twin Creeks Extension District 4-H Youth Development Agent
County Fair!!! Many thanks to every entity making the hard decisions as to whether or not our youth had an opportunity to showcase their project work at the highlight of summer events in western Kansas – the County Fair! Our 2020 Covid-19 year has been ‘a year of change’ – remote school learning, no spring school sports, work from home employees, group activities at a standstill, attending church in a virtual setting and the list goes on. My reflection on the 2020 Covid-19 year up to this point not only sees ‘a year of change’, but more importantly, a ‘change year’ – a forced opportunity to step back and evaluate our current status quo and adapt to challenges at hand.
These uninvited encounters created occasions “To Make The Best Better” in light of the uncertainty and adaptability necessary to continue to move forward. In this ‘change’ process, innovation took the lead in thinking outside the box to meet demands. Our 4-H program empowers young people with the skills to lead for a lifetime. The Kansas 4-H Vision states: Youth in 4-H will grow and develop into healthy, caring adults prepared to meet the challenges and opportunities of a globally connected world. Youth members of Twin Creeks Extension District 4-H Councils addressed this year’s challenging situation with much thought and consideration in creating and adapting county fair schedules to meet suggested Extension, county and state health requirements. As expected, some adjustments were met with hesitance allowing for negotiations, another tool necessary to develop leadership skills. The ultimate

goal of a county fair is to create a learning, educational environment for our youth. Several excellent judges hired to evaluate youth projects hammered home the idea that 4-H and FFA members should be excited about the opportunity to learn throughout the judging process. If you didn’t earn a blue ribbon, but take home information for improvements, then the judge was successful. In assisting with each fair in our district, I am constantly listening to comments, both from youth and adults. One comment sticks in my mind from a youth exhibiting his food item who excitedly repeated several times, “My mom is going to be so proud of me! I got a blue ribbon!” He explained what he had
baked, and then explained what he needed to change in order to make it better. It’s not about the ribbon – it’s about what you learn. At the end of the day, it is one person’s opinion on a given day and time. It’s about principles, ethics, morals, integrity and your conscience. Our hope is to build youth with resilience and the sustainability needed to focus on a positive atmosphere with those around them. We will evaluate changes made for the 2020 4-H program year, but more than likely some of those changes will continue as the new format because it met the needs of our 21st century youth. Watch for virtual educational opportunities, not only for 4-H youth, but for ALL youth in our communities! We hope “To Make The Best
