Legislation Introduced To Increase Milk Consumption Among Children Legislation Introduced To Increase Milk Consumption Among Children Congressman Fred Keller from Pennsylvania introduced the Giving Increased Variety to Ensure Milk into the Lives of Kids Act late last month. The legislation aims to increase milk consumption in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) by giving participants over the age of 2

the option of having 2% reduced fat milk and whole milk as part of their diet. If passed, the bill would reverse an Obama administration rule limiting WIC participants to 1% reduced fat or non-fat milk. The WIC program provides federal grants to states for supplemental foods, nutritional education and other support for low-income pregnant or postpartum women, as well as caregivers of chil-

dren under 5. The goal is to put good nutrition in the hands of children. Whole milk plays a key role in this as it provides a nutritionally dense, affordable and accessible complete source of protein. Science shows consumption of full-fat dairy products promotes a healthy weight in both children and adults and fends off chronic diseases.

July Beef and Pork Exports Rebound, but Still Below Year-Ago July exports of U.S. beef rebounded from recent lows but remained below 2019 levels, according to the U.S. Meat Export Federation. U.S. pork exports, which are on a record pace in 2020, were also down from a year ago in July but increased compared to June. USMEF President and CEO Dan Halstrom says,

“With production returning to near-normal levels, we definitely saw an improvement in beef exports.” July beef exports totaled 107,298 metric tons, up 36 percent from June but still nine percent below last year. Export value was $647.8 million, the highest since March but down ten percent from a year

ago. July pork exports totaled 222,035 metric tons, down five percent from a year ago, while export value fell 12 percent to $548.3 million. For January through July, pork exports remained 20 percent ahead of last year's record pace in volume at and 22 percent higher in value.

NCTA greets larger freshmen class

The freshmen class of students arriving this fall at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis increased 20% from a year ago with 102 new, fulltime freshmen. They join a doubling of fulltime transfer students who now number 20, along with 96 returning second- and third-year Aggies for a total of 218 fulltime students seeking an associate degree. Nebraska residents comprise 80% of the NCTA enrollment. The University of Nebraska’s sole two-year campus started August 24 with in-person classes instead of virtual courses and saw a 5% decline in fulltime students. “We were quite encouraged when more freshmen and transfer students chose to become NCTA Aggies,” said Larry Gossen, NCTA dean. “As educators, it’s rewarding for faculty to have students back on campus

and in classrooms this fall.” More freshmen and transfer students who will graduate from NCTA in 2022 or 2021 (if transfers) join the overall University of Nebraska system increase of 1%, reported Tuesday. Systemwide, the NU campus enrollments hit 51, 704. Colleges across the U.S. shared concerns due to the economic upheaval and uncertainty of a global coronavirus pandemic. “Students who wanted to attend college with in-person classes that are closer to home, and have the Nebraska Promise to assist them financially, may be more comfortable here at NCTA with a less densely-populated area,” said Jennifer McConville, associate dean. “It was great to welcome this big of a freshmen class!” The more significant drop occurred in dual credit and part-time students, some who are high school juniors and seniors with one class.

Typically, dual credit planning begins in the spring and summer. Dual credit numbers declined from 88 to 51. While fulltime student count was higher for college freshmen, transfers, and the small class of freshmen-turned-sophomores, NCTA saw fewer part-time and non-credit students enroll for a 14% overall decline. When the pandemic forced colleges to remote learning and virtual programs, I believe some of our Aggie students in production agriculture, especially, returned to their farming and ranching operations or went directly into the workforce as wage earners,” McConville said. This summer, during an 8-week session, NCTA provided in-person courses and laboratories for 25 fulltime veterinary technology students. Veterinary Technology and the Animal Science/ Agricultural Education areas have the greatest enrollments this fall at 96 and 74 students, respectively. Workforce development through experiential programs is a hallmark of the rural campus which features livestock,

large and small animals for teaching programs in animal health and veterinary technology, and a 550-acre campus farm and field laboratory. Gossen said increased interest is evident in the Agricultural Mechanics and Agronomy programs with increased enrollment in both areas, particularly in beginning and advanced welding. In June, NCTA was recognized by Nebraska education entities for its workforce development initiatives, and to agricultural mechanics program delivered by Dan Stehlik. Last month, WalletHub. com ranked NCTA as the No. 1 two-year program in the nation for graduate and career outcomes, based on earnings and costs of education. NCTA topped all public, community colleges in Nebraska for overall affordability, educational outcomes, and career/earnings success for alumni 10 years post-graduation. The college continues student outreach with virtual recruiting and information sessions this month and next, and hosts campus Discovery Days for prospective students on Oct. 6 and Nov. 10.

For program payments, updated yields will apply beginning with the 2020 crop year which, should payments trigger, will be paid out in October of 2021. The updated yield will be equal to 90% of the average yield per planted acre in crop years 2013-2017. That excludes any year where the applicable covered commodity was not planted and is subject to the ratio obtained by dividing the 2008-2012 average national yield by the 2013-2017 average national yield for the covered commodity.

11,944 carlot samples from 48 counties showed an average test weight of 61.0 pounds per bushel, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service and Kansas Grain Inspection Service, Inc. For comparison purposes, last year's crop averaged 61.0 pounds, while the 10-year average was 60.8 pounds per bushel. Protein content averaged 11.6 percent, up 0.1 percentage point from 2019, but below the 10-year average of 12.3. The North Central District had the highest protein content at 12.2 percent, followed by the West Central District at 11.9 percent. Statewide, moisture content averaged 11.4 percent, below 11.6 percent last year, but above the 10year average of 11.2. Samples of wheat grading No. 1, at 82 percent, were up from 77 percent last year. Seventeen

in 2019, and 1 percent graded No. 3 or below. Wheat samples averaged 0.4 percent damaged kernels, down 0.1 percentage point from 2019 and near the 10-year average of 0.3 percent. Samples tested had 0.1 percent foreign material on average, unchanged from last year, and equal to the 10-year average. Shrunken and broken kernels averaged 1.1 percent, equal to 2019, and 0.1 percentage point below the 10-year average. Total defects averaged 1.5 percent, down 0.1 percentage point from 2019 and the 10-year average. Average dockage for all samples was 0.5 percent, equal to last year. There were 1,330 samples voluntarily submitted for inspection in the 2020 crop year. The test weight for these samples averaged 60.0 pounds per bushel, protein averaged 11.9

percent. Fifty-three percent of the submitted samples graded No.1, 29 percent graded No. 2 and 18 percent graded No. 3 or below. This is the only wheat quality release for the 2020 wheat harvest. Test weight, protein content, grade and defect samples are representative of wheat samples moving in commercial rail cars and truck lots as tested by Kansas Grain Inspection Service, Inc. The data are summarized by the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Soldier beetles are quite common throughout Kansas and I’ve noticed them lately in my flowers and garden. They are most commonly noticed in late summer as the adults are highly mobile, relatively large, and are very active searching for and feeding on pollen. Thus, they can be very common on any crop, or weed, that is pollinating, especially sunflowers, sorghum, and cucurbits such as cantaloupes and watermelons. Soldier beetles are often mistaken for blister beetles because of their size and shape but are not in the same taxonomic family and thus, produce no cantharidin, the chemical that causes external blisters in humans and causes other problems in livestock when ingested. Soldier beetles are harmless.

by forward contracting their crop, COVID-19 and other factors outside their control are depressing local cash prices and futures prices. So far, relief programs have had minimal applicability to wheat farmers. We ask that you use the resources available through the CARES Act to provide support for 2020 crop losses and to include all classes of wheat.” “We have seen harsh impacts on Kansas agriculture producers this year due to COVID-19, especially for wheat farmers, by no fault of their own,” said Rep. Marshall. “The CARES Act, thanks to the efforts taken by Secretary Perdue and the entire Trump Administration, has been critical to keeping Kansas producers and small businesses viable during this pandemic.“

is grateful for the leadership from Members of Congress who have sent a letter to Secretary Perdue, requested funding from the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP) for wheat producers,” said Justin Knopf, KAWG President. “Kansas wheat farmers have been heavily affected this year by economic shutdowns, decreased net farm income and decreases in global trade, but have not had access to assistance specific to wheat. This letter demonstrates the significant price drops our farmers have experienced this year and the need for 2020 losses to be covered.”

A new questionnaire reveals the priorities for rural America of President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden. The American Farm Bureau Federation asked the Republican and Democratic candidates to respond with their stances on several topics directly affecting rural America. President Trump’s responses focus largely on his first-term accomplishments. He pledges a science-based approach to regulation going forward. He commits to addressing the “rural/urban divide” and emphasizes support for voluntary conservation programs. Former Vice President Biden’s responses focus heavi-
