Red Meat Muscle Cut Exports Strong in August; Variety Meats Trend Lower pork muscle cuts were

August exports of U.S. beef and pork muscle cuts were above last year's strong volumes, according to data released by USDA and compiled by the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF). Variety meat exports were lower than a year ago, due in part to the lack of available labor required to harvest and export some items. Led by record-large demand in South Korea and Taiwan, beef muscle cut exports were the largest in more than a year at 89,148 metric tons (mt), up 3.5% yearover-year, while export value increased slightly from a year ago to $611 million. August mus-

cle cut exports also set new records in China and Indonesia and beef exports to Canada continued to gain momentum. Combined beef/ beef variety meat exports were 109,752 mt in August, down 4.5% from a year ago. Export value was $673.8 million, down 2% from a year ago but the highest since March. For January through August, beef muscle cut exports were 6% below last year's pace in volume (627,248 mt) and 9% lower in value ($4.38 billion). Beef/beef variety meat exports were down 8% to 808,659 mt, valued at $4.95 billion (down 9%). August exports of U.S.

180,369 mt, up 1% from a year ago, though value was down 11% to $448.7 million. Combined pork/pork variety meat exports were down 2% in volume (217,893 mt) and 10% lower in value ($528 million). U.S. pork exports remain on a record pace in 2020, with January-August muscle cut exports up 22% from a year ago to 1.68 million mt, valued at $4.45 billion (up 20%). Pork/pork variety meat exports were up 17% in volume at just under 2 million mt, with value up 18% to $5.13 billion. In August, pork exports to Japan were higher year-over-year and exports to Vietnam set a new record

for the second consecutive month. While still lower than a year ago, exports to Mexico and Colombia continued to show improvement. "The upward trend in muscle cut exports is very encouraging and especially critical as beef and pork production continue to rebound from the interruptions earlier in the year," said USMEF President and CEO Dan Halstrom. "Maintaining variety meat volumes has been especially challenging this year but we continue to expand and develop destinations for

these items, which are essential to maximizing carcass value." Halstrom said COVID-19 continues to impact many countries, but the recovery in foodservice is well underway in China and Taiwan and there is progress in other main markets, including Japan and Korea. Even as foodservice activity increases, strong retail and online sales persist. "Record beef shipments to Korea, Taiwan and China show the kind of rebound U.S. beef can achieve as the foodservice sector gradual-

ly recovers and adapts, and we are excited to see demand strengthen further entering the fourth quarter," he said. "Pork demand is also recovering in some of the regions hardest hit by COVID-19 restrictions, and we see continued export growth in countries where domestic production has been impacted by African swine fever. U.S. pork is also making significant gains in Japan, including dramatic growth in ground seasoned pork and strong demand for chilled U.S. pork cuts in the regional retail sector.

If so, do not let high nitrate levels kill your cows or cause abortions. Nitrates occur naturally in all forages. At low levels, either nitrates are converted into microbial protein by bacteria in the rumen or they are excreted. However, when nitrate concentrations get too high, they can kill cows and maybe abort calves. Some plants are much more likely to be high in nitrates than others are. Remember, there are many ways to feed high nitrate hay safely. Diluting with grain or low nitrate forages is most common. Frequent, small meals that slowly increase the amount of nitrate fed helps cattle adapt to high nitrate hay and make sure cattle have plenty of clean, low nitrate water at all times. Prussic acid is also a concern. It is also known as hydrocyanic acid or hydrogen cyanide (HCN). Ingesting plants that have produced excess cyanide causes prussic acid

Mid-America Index in Growth Range for Fourth Straight Month: Worker Shortages Reported by 40% of Supply Managers For the fourth straight month, the Creighton University Mid-America Business Conditions Index, a leading economic indicator for the nine-state region stretching from Minnesota to Arkansas, advanced above growth neutral and to its highest level since May 2018.

Overall index: In April of this year, Covid-19 pushed the overall index to its lowest level in 11years. Since April, the overall index has risen five consecutive months with four straight months above growth neutral 50.0. The September Business Conditions Index, which ranges between 0 and 100, increased to 65.1 from August’s 60.0. “Creighton’s monthly survey results have mirrored the national manufacturing survey results indicating that the manufacturing sector has been expanding at a solid pace since sinking to a post-2008 recession low in April. Even so, current output in the regional and U.S. manufacturing sectors remains well below pre-COVID-19 levels. I expect the national number to rise well above growth neutral for September when

it is released later this morning,” said Ernie Goss, PhD, director of Creighton University’s Economic Forecasting Group and the Jack A. MacAllister Chair in Regional Economics in the Heider College of Business. Employment: The regional employment index moved well above growth neutral for September to its highest level since June 2019, climbing to 61.8 from 54.8 in August. Prior to COVID-19, the regional insured unemployment rate for the region stood at 1.3%. It reached a high of 11% in May and fell to 4.6% in September. Importantly, four of five supply managers reported that their firms were experiencing difficulty finding and hiring qualified workers. As stated by one supply manager, “Very competitive for entry level staff and company is having to adjust scale wages.” Other comments from September survey participants: “Tough navigating: Just a lot of cross currents and changes.”

“March thru May hiring was significantly down due to COVID, but since July we are rebounding strongly.”

“In September, we have many openings, some are tough to fill.” “I expect the economy to go up assuming President is reelected. Wholesale Prices: The wholesale inflation gauge for the month soared to 71.5 from 52.3 in August. “Though inflationary pressures have risen over the last several months, the Federal Reserve remains comfortable with current ultra-low short-term interest rates. In recent meetings of the rate setting committee, the FOMC, the committee indicated they will likely keep short-term interest rates at near record lows well into the future even as inflation ticks up above their target,” said Goss. Confidence: Looking ahead six months, economic optimism, as captured by the September Business Confidence Index, dipped to a still strong 69.4 from 73.3 in August. “An expanding man-

ufacturing sector, the federal stimulus plan, the Federal Reserve monetary incentive programs, and U.S. stock markets supported September’s very healthy confidence index,” said Goss. Inventories: The regional inventory index for September, reflecting levels of raw materials and supplies, increased to a weak 45.6 from last month’s 41.7.

Trade: The regional trade numbers were down for the month, with new export orders falling to 50.0 from August’s 58.3. An expanding domestic manufacturing sector supported a solid import index at 56.0, down slightly from August’s 56.8. Other survey components: new orders at 79.4, up from 72.6 in August; the production or sales index expanded to 72.1 from 67.7 in August; and the speed of deliveries of raw materials and supplies index at 66.7 up from last month’s 63.3 (indicating slower deliveries for September). Approximately 62.9% of supply managers reported shipping bottlenecks and difficulties in receiving materials and

transporting output in September.

The Creighton Economic Forecasting Group has conducted the monthly survey of supply managers in nine states since 1994 to produce leading economic indicators of the Mid-America economy. States included in the survey are Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota. The forecasting group’s overall index, referred to as the Business Conditions Index, ranges between 0 and 100. An index greater than 50 indicates an expansionary economy over the course of the next three to six months. The Business Conditions Index is a mathematical average of indices for new orders, production or sales, employment, inventories and delivery lead time. This is the same methodology, used since 1931 by the Institute for Supply Management (ISM), formerly the National Association of Purchasing Management. The Mid-America report is produced independently of the national ISM. Kansas: The Kansas Business Conditions Index for September increased to 69.9 from 63.0 in August. Com-

ponents of the leading economic indicator from the monthly survey of supply managers were: new orders at 78.9, production or sales at 73.3, delivery lead time at 78.5, employment at 64.2, and inventories at 54.7. “Validating a rapidly improving state economy, U.S. Department of Labor data indicate that the state’s insured unemployment rate stood at 0.7% in the second week of March, peaked at 14.6% in the third week of May, and fell to 4.1% in the first week of September,” said Goss. Nebraska: Nebraska’s overall index for September slipped to 62.9 from 64.2 in August. Components of the index from the monthly survey of supply managers for September were: new orders at 77.7, production or sales at 67.7, delivery lead time at 62.6, inventories at 45.4, and employment at 61.2. “Validating a rapidly improving state economy, U.S. Department of Labor data indicate that the state’s insured unemployment rate stood at 0.5% in the second week of March, peaked at 11% in the fourth week of May, and fell to 3.2% in the first week of September,” said Goss. Survey results for October will be released on Nov. 2, the first business day of the month.

K-State team eyes facial recognition technology for cattle If you’ve stared one cow in the face, you’ve seen them all … right? New technology being developed at Kansas State University is likely to debunk that thought, capitalizing on the power of artificial intelligence to build a database of facial recognition technology for the cattle industry. In other words, just like humans, each cow in the herd has a set of unique facial features that modern technology can scan and later use to track the animal throughout its life. “We’re talking about a system here that has an incremental cost that is close to zero, and nobody would be (forced) to use it,” said KC Olson, a beef cattle scientist with K-State Research and Extension who has helped to develop the idea. “But there would be economic incentives provided by the beef industry to participate.”

Human facial recognition is becoming more common in secure locations, such as airports. And, humans can log into their computers or smartphones simply by looking at a screen. “The technology is based on the geometry of the human face,” Olson said. “It uses a bunch of intricate biometric measurements to put a permanent identification on a human being so that later on, when that person needs to get on a flight or something similar, the technology will identify who they are. For humans, that technology is capable of nearly 100% accuracy.”

“Our thinking is, ‘why can’t we have something like that for beef cattle, which could then be used to create a national animal disease traceability system?’” Olson said. “The need for such a system has never been greater. We need this extra layer of protection for our industry against a foreign

Volunteers are Crucial to 4-H Success Jenilee Godsey Twin Creeks Extension District Youth Agriculture Agent

As we kick-off a new 4-H year, we as Extension Agents, get excited about the opportunity to work with existing and new volunteers in our 4-H programs. Volunteers play a crucial in the success of the program in regards to knowledge gained and skills advanced for our youth in their specific project areas. Take a look at Michelle’s message about mentoring in 4-H! One of the important aspects of 4-H is providing practical learning opportunities for youth by working with caring adults who set examples and model behaviors. These adults provide invaluableop portunities as mentors for youth. What is a mentor? A mentor is someone who listens, helps in goal setting, sets examples, and provides a framework for youth to learn problem solving, improve communication, and expand life skills. Mentors have longterm impacts on the lives of youth and can exist in many different roles. We often think of mentors in one-onone relationships but they can certainly exist as part of a group environment. They can include teachers, counselors, pastors, neighbors, family members and club/project leaders. Good mentors will go to great lengths to assist, but also understand that the success of any young person depends on that youth’s choices and behaviors. Even when a young person doesn’t show instant change and doesn’t seem to be benefitting from the relationship, the simple act of the mentor being

there can be life-changing. Developmental or youth-centered mentoring relationships in which mentors help young people set and reach their own goals results in higher youth satisfaction compared to relationships in which the mentor just directs activities. While it may sound like a mentor needs to be perfect or a super-hero to succeed, mentors are human and make mistakes. Mentors may take the wrong approach to a problem or say the wrong thing from time to time, but mentees are generally resilient as long as they understand that their mentors have the youth’s best interests at heart. Mistakes can give young people the chance to see an adult model good problem-solving skills and can be used as teachable moments. Here are some great Do’s and Don’ts: DO be consistent – Many young people believe that adults aren’t dependable and mentors need to ‘walk the walk’ and make sure that our actions are consistent with our words. DO practice healthy communication skills – Establish eye contact, listen, ask questions for clarification, don’t interrupt and be open-minded.

DO address inappropriate behavior – Do this directly but with care. Explain that there are standards in the outside world with which individuals are expected to comply. Behaviors learned in the home or among peers may be appropriate in those settings but not in others. DON’T trivialize your mentee’s feelings – Young people tend to lack the perspective that comes with age so your mentee may react more strongly in a given situation than an adult would. You may not understand why something is so important to your mentee but accept that it is and keep listening. DON’T jump to conclusions – Remember there are usually at least two sides to every story. It’s okay to give your mentee the benefit of the doubt but don’t choose sides or believe everything you hear. If you know the facts, then you’ll be in a better position to help your mentee find solutions and make wise choices. If you are interested in being a mentor or volunteer in our 4-H program, we welcome you to contact any of our county offices!
