Kansas Organizations Launch Effort to Stop the Spread of COVID-19 in Kansas Stop the Spread Kansas is a public awareness campaign urging Kansans to do their part in slowing the rate of COVID-19 infections across the state. Stakeholders are encouraging Kansans to follow the Centers for Disease Control guidelines, avoid mass gatherings, use face coverings and other measures to preserve precious health care resources. Campaign partners include the Kansas Hospital Association, Kansas Chamber, Kansas

Farm Bureau and the Kansas Medical Society. Additional organizations are likely to join the statewide effort that will begin before Thanksgiving. “Hospitals across the state are facing significant capacity and staffing constraints because of increased COVID-19 spread, and this campaign will help ensure the normal standards of care Kansans expect will be preserved,” said KHA President and CEO Chad Austin. “All mitigation efforts taken

over these next several weeks will be critical to keeping Kansas businesses, schools and other services safely open.”

Kansans can access campaign resources, industry-specific toolkits and guidance from the CDC and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment at www. StoptheSpreadKansas.org. The landing page will provide numerous communications resources over the next few weeks to help Kansans spread the word, not the virus. “The Kansas business community is committed to the health and safety of employees and customers. Companies small and large across the state have requirements and protocols in place regarding facemasks and

other measures that allow for social distancing and additional cleaning. However, we need all Kansans taking these voluntary actions. It will make a tremendous difference and reduce the pressure on our health care system. We encourage all Kansans to do their part to stop the spread of this virus,” said Alan Cobb, president and CEO of the Kansas Chamber.

Stop the Spread Kansas hopes to ignite a sense of unity, community and responsibility. The campaign will employ grassroots outreach and advertising to encourage all Kansans 18 and older to make the changes necessary to save lives. The most important aspect is educating citizens on the four tools they can use to stop the spread of COVID-19: - Wearing a mask - Washing your hands often - Keeping a safe distance - Avoiding large gatherings

“It’s imperative we use every tool at our disposal to stop the spread of COVID-19 in Kansas. We must act quickly to alleviate strain on our hospital systems so our schools, businesses and communities can continue safely operating. I encourage all Kansans to avoid large gatherings and practice social distancing. When that’s not possible, please wear a mask to help keep Kansas open,” said Rich Felts, Kansas Farm Bureau president. By using these measures, especially during the holiday season, Kansans can show they are taking responsibility for protecting their communities. These small sacrifices will ensure our health care system

and hospitals have the staff and resources necessary to provide live-saving care when needed. Slowing the spread also allows our schools, businesses and communities to safely remain open. “Clearly COVID-19 is now infecting more Kansans than ever. Physicians and other frontline health care workers across the state are working tirelessly to help those who contract the virus get well again—all while they continue to care for patients with other needs. To reduce the spread of COVID-19, Kansas physicians encourage everyone to wear a mask and practice safe social distancing,” said Rachelle Colombo, Kansas Medical Society executive director.

USA Pork Producers Launch “Give-A-Ham” Food Program Did you know...

The National Pork Producers Council launched the “Givea-Ham” challenge. It’s a nationwide social media campaign encouraging hog farmers and those involved in the industry to donate pork to organizations that serve people living with food insecurity and then will challenge others to follow suit. The “Give-a-Ham” challenge will run through the end of this year. “With so many Americans struggling with COVID-related financial challenges, this year’s challenge takes on a special meaning,”

says NPPC President Howard “A.V.” Roth, a Wisconsin hog farmer. “Giving back to our communities is a core value of hog farmers nationwide; it’s so gratifying to come together as an industry this time of year to serve those in need.” Throughout COVID-19, U.S. hog farmers and their numerous state associations that represent them have donated a collective 15.7 million pounds of pork to local food banks through October 31. That total equals 222.8 million servings of pork. “I’m proud to

be part of an industry that has already made significant contributions this year to help those less fortunate and look forward to participating in the ‘Give-a-Ham’ challenge, paying it forward with pork,” Roth adds. Participants are encouraged to share their stories on social media using the #GiveaHam hashtag.

7 REASONS FOR HOLIDAY URGENT CARE VISITS: When it’s time to celebrate the holidays, you’re probably thinking about turkey, cranberry sauce, presents, and fun with family—not a trip to the doctor. However, holiday festivities sometimes lead to health issues that might require urgent medical attention. Access Care is open on the holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas day. While many holiday injuries and illnesses are minor, some can be life-threatening without immediate medical care. Here are seven common health issues to watch out for this holiday season: 1. Knife Injuries If you’re not careful, all that chopping and dicing can lead to knife injuries. Always remember to hold the knife’s point away from you when cutting foods, and sharpen your knives regularly. When carving the turkey, place the bird on a stable surface to avoid accidental slips. If you do cut yourself, seek medical attention if you cannot stop the bleeding or you experience other symptoms

like dizziness, weakness, or numbness.

2. Food Poisoning Cooking a turkey properly is essential when it comes to avoiding bacterial infection. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that all turkeys be cooked completely thawed and at 325 degrees Fahrenheit or more. If you are serving stuffing as a side dish, cook it outside of the turkey to avoid food-borne illness. Clean and disinfect all cooking surfaces, and don’t forget to wash your hands after handling raw meat. Of course, food poisoning still can occur despite taking the necessary precautions while cooking. Symptoms of this condition include vomiting, lethargy, dizziness, and diarrhea. While many cases of food poisoning can be treated at home, professional medical care may be necessary if your symptoms have not subsided after two or three days. 3. Burns With constant baking,

simmering, and sautéing, holiday meal preparation can be a recipe for burns. Most often, people are burned when attempting to extinguish a fire that has broken out. Keep a fire extinguisher close by in case a stove or other cooking surface catches fire. It’s also important to use caution when working with hot cookware. Thick oven mitts and potholders can help protect your hands from injury. A minor burn usually can be treated at home, but you may need to visit an urgent care center if additional symptoms occur. Seek medical help if you notice large blisters, oozing and redness, or if the burn hasn’t healed after several weeks. 4. Heartburn and Indigestion Holiday goodies can be enjoyable, but for those who suffer from heartburn and indigestion, it can lead to discomfort. Salty, acidic foods often lead to bloating, gas, and even nausea and vomiting. Chewing your food well, incorporating fiber into your meals, and

HERE FOR YOUR FAMILY 365 DAYS A YEAR, INCLUDING HOLIDAYS! MONDAY - FRIDAY: 5PM - 7PM SATURDAY & SUNDAY: 9AM - NOON

avoiding excessive alcohol consumption may ease these symptoms. However, severe symptoms, like persistent stomach or chest pain, may indicate a serious health issue and should be evaluated quickly. 5. Traffic Accidents Caused by Alcohol In addition to overeating, many people consume excessive amounts of alcohol at holiday celebrations. In fact, Thanksgiving is reported as the “deadliest holiday of the year” because of increased car accidents caused by drinking. Even a minor car accident can land you at the emergency room or urgent care center; plus, driving while intoxicated puts others at risk. Always use a designated driver if you plan on traveling after enjoying a few drinks. 6. Overexertion Adding physical activity to your festivities can be a good way to keep the holiday pounds at bay. However, those with heart problems or pre-existing health conditions should avoid overexerting themselves. Pushing yourself past your limits may also cause sprains, broken bones, or other injuries. Avoid overexertion by taking frequent breaks and drinking plenty of water.

7. Domestic Disputes Whether it’s over football or current events, the holidays are a prime time for family arguments. Frayed nerves, old family grievances, and even the stress of Black Friday shopping can lead to disagreements—and shouting matches. Sometimes, family fights lead to serious altercations, which can require urgent care. Avoiding hot-button topics, limiting stress, and drinking in moderation can help to keep emotions in check. While taking precautions can help you and your family enjoy healthy holidays, accidents can still happen. If you believe your symptoms need medical attention, visit our Access Care clinic for quick relief. The Phillips County Access Care Urgent Care Clinic is open over the holidays during its’ standard hours: Monday-Friday 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM and 9:00 AM – Noon on weekends. 1150 State St Hospital ER Entrance. **Please note Urgent Care services are billed at a higher billing rate than a clinic visit, but less than an ER visit. Access Care is your bridge between a clinic appointment and the Emergency Room.

November firearm deer harvest slightly lower than last year Preliminary Nebraska deer check-in numbers indicate statewide harvest is down 3 percent compared to 2019 for the November firearm season. During the nine-day season, 42,024 deer were harvested, compared to 43,418 in 2019. While the statewide trend was comparable to previous years, regions of the state varied. Deer harvest in southeast Nebraska was up 7% from 2019, while southwest Nebraska was down 10%. The northwest and northeast districts were down slightly at 2% to 3% each. Mule deer buck har-

vest decreased 17%, with 5,990 taken, compared to 7,201 in 2019. Whitetail buck harvest was down slightly, with 23,814 taken compared to 24,301 in 2019. Antlerless mule deer harvest was down 15%, while antlerless whitetailed deer harvest increased 5% compared to 2019.

it’s not surprising harvest numbers would start trending downward at some point. In contrast, deer numbers in southeast Nebraska have been inching upward in recent years, and we’re seeing that in our harvest.” One major change for the 2020 November firearm season was the use of Telecheck for all deer harvested. (Archery, muzzleloader and late firearm hunters have used Telecheck for nearly 10 years.) Due to COVID-19-related concerns, Game and Parks did not operate in-person check stations this year.

“Many factors can be related to the variations in numbers of checked deer,” said Luke Meduna, big game program manager for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. “Considering the increases in antlerless harvest in the southwest due to depredation complaints over the past few years, “Our hunters adapted quickly and did a great job at utilizing the Telecheck system,” Meduna said. Game and Parks plans to go back to in-person check stations for the 2021 No-

M &

vember firearm season.

Archery season closes Dec. 31, while muzzleloader season is Dec. 1-31. The late antlerless season will run Jan. 1-15. Hunters are reminded that mule deer does are protected in many management units and public lands across the state. Refer to the 2020 Big Game Guide for details or view it at OutdoorNebraska/org/ guides. Hunters wishing to donate venison can use the Deer Exchange program. Visit OutdoorNebraska.org for more details.

Winterizing Strawberries Rachael Boyle Phillips-Rooks District Extension Agent Agriculture and Natural Resources

Winter can be a difficult time for strawberries. Plants need time to become adjusted to cold weather and will gradually become more cold resistant as fall progresses. Strawberry plants are able to withstand colder temperatures in the middle of the winter than in the fall before they have gone through much cold weather. For example, if temperatures suddenly plummet below 20 degrees F before the plants harden to the cold, they can be severely damaged. A drop to 15 degrees F may kill them. Hardened

plants can withstand such temperatures with ease. Normally, strawberries should be mulched for the winter between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Mulching plants helps protect strawberries not only from low temperatures but also from heaving damage. Heaving damage occurs when the alternate freezing and thawing common in Kansas winters heave plants out of the ground where the roots are exposed and the plants die from lack of water. Wheat straw makes good mulch if it is clean (free from weed seed and wheat kernels). Prairie hay also
