Poinsettia Care
Rachael Boyle
Phillips-Rooks District Extension Agent
Agriculture and Natural Resources
Modern poinsettia varieties stay attractive for a long time if given proper care. Place your poinsettia in a sunny window or the brightest area of the room, but do not let it touch cold windowpanes. The day temperature should be 65 to 75 degrees F with 60 to 65 degrees at night. Temperatures above 75 degrees will shorten bloom life, and below 60 degrees may
cause root rot. Move plants away from drafty windows at night or draw drapes between them to avoid damage from the cold. Poinsettias are somewhat finicky about soil moisture. Avoid overwatering because poinsettias do not like "wet feet." On the other hand, if the plant is allowed to wilt, it will drop some leaves. So how do you maintain proper moisture? Examine the potting soil daily by sticking your finger about one-

Kansas Christmas tree farms hope for busy year During a year when many activities are limited or prohibited due to the COVID-19 pandemic, shopping for a Christmas tree is not one of them. In fact, David Bruton – the utilization and marketing forester with the Kansas Forest Service – said he can think of no better holiday activity for families than to visit a local Christmas tree farm. “The adventure and excitement of trying to find that ‘perfect’ Christmas tree, in the great outdoors, will no doubt create memories to last a lifetime,” Bruton said. The Kansas Christmas Tree Growers Association lists 34 tree farms in its membership across the state. In 2015, the Kansas Department of Agriculture estimated more than 11,000 live Christmas
trees were harvested and sold in Kansas. The National Christmas Tree Association reports members in all 50 states, employing more than 100,000 people. “Christmas trees, like all other trees, are natural, renewable resources,” Bruton said. “The members of the Kansas Christmas Tree Growers Association specifically plant and maintain their trees to be harvested and enjoyed as Christmas trees.” Bruton noted that it typically takes between 6 to 8 years for Christmas trees to reach a height of six feet. Taller trees take about one year for each 14 to 16 inches beyond that, he said. “Harvested trees are replaced each year with newly planted seedlings that are then grown and maintained for the enjoy-
ment of future customers,” Bruton said. Aside from providing a family’s thrill of finding just the right tree, Bruton said Christmas trees offer other benefits, including: One acre of Christmas trees provides enough oxygen for 18 people every day. -Just one tree absorbs 1 ton of carbon dioxide during its lifetime. At any given time, more than 350 million trees are growing in the U.S. -Used trees are recyclable. Nationally, there are approximately 4000 programs that recycle Christmas trees. -Christmas trees are able to grow on soil that is unfit for other crops. -During its lifetime, only ¼ of an ounce of pesticide is used on a non-organic tree. Phil Wegman, president
Oxford NE
of the Kansas Christmas Tree Growers Association, encouraged consumers to get out and support the state’s farms, particularly in a year when the COVID-19 pandemic has created new challenges for their businesses. He noted that the state’s farms have implemented steps to make the experience safe. “Visiting your local tree farm gives families the opportunity to learn about growing trees and experience open spaces, fresh air, green space and natural beauty found in nature,” Wegman said. Plus, he adds, “an investment in local Christmas tree farms is an investment in local communities. Christmas tree farmers re-invest income earned from selling their trees in other local businesses.”

Bipartisan Aid Package Pitched in Congress
A bipartisan group of lawmakers announced a proposed coronavirus aid package that would cost $908 billion overall and would contain $26 billion for nutrition and agriculture. A report says that proposal is less than 50 percent of a White House proposal issued before the election. It’s also one-third the cost of a plan backed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The package is considered by many to be a short-term plan as President-elect Joe Biden hinted that his new economic team would propose a larger economic stimulus package once
he’s sworn in. Biden adds that “Any package passed in the lame-duck session is likely to be, at best, just the start.” Mitt Romney of Utah says the aid package would repurpose $560 billion from last spring’s aid passed by Congress. That would lower any new spending level to $348 billion. Senate Finance Committee Chair Chuck Grassley, who just returned after recovering from COVID-19, says that Congress is working on an aid package. However, the costs had to be lower than earlier proposals for any aid package to have a chance at clearing the Senate.

Farmer Optimism Lower in Latest Ag Economy Barometer U.S. farmers sentiment weakened following the November 2020 elections. The Purdue University-CME Group Ag Economy Barometer fell 16 points from a month earlier to a reading of 167. Although this month’s reading was nearly equal to the pre-pandemic high set back in February, it was nine percent lower than the reading taken just two weeks before the 2020 elections. Organizers say the decline resulted from weakened expectations for the future, as the Index of Future Expectations declined to a reading of 156 in November, 30 points below the October reading. On the other hand, farm-
ers perception of current conditions on their farms improved. The Index of Current Conditions, lifted by the ongoing rally in agricultural commodity prices, rose by nine points from October to November, set-
ting a record high for the index of 187. However, farmers have concerns about future regulation impact on agriculture, potential higher estate taxes, and reduced support for the ethanol industry.
