Phillips County Health Systems Marketing Recognized Christmas facts: Phillips County Health Systems (PCHS) was recently recognized for excellence in public relations and marketing efforts by the Kansas Association of Health Care Communicators through its Emerald Awards competition.

Emerald Awards are given annually to Kansas hospitals and health systems that excel in internal communications, external communications, special events, advertising and other categories. Three marketing professionals from Georgia with extensive experience in health care marketing evaluated

this year’s 54 entries for planning and research, implementation, cost effectiveness and results. Tara Overmiller, Chief Strategy Officer, re-

ceived top billing with an Emerald Award for her work on the promotion of childhood wellness exams and vaccinations. The top

“Advertising - Total Campaign” award recognized the successful promotion that included radio, newspaper, brochures, events, website, and social

media marketing pieces. “I am so fortunate to share information with our patients and com-

munity about the outstanding services and wonderful medical providers at PCHS. The Childhood Vaccination and Wellness campaign’s success is a testament to the spirit of teamwork at Phillips County Health Systems,” Overmiller said. “I didn’t do this alone. Earning recognition among hospitals and healthcare systems 10 times our size shows the power of collaboration and speaks to the commitment from our providers, leaders, employees, and board to deliver the absolute best healthcare to our community. From Shelly Cote’, APRN-C

dressing up as a superhero at the Riverless Festival to employees’ children being the models for the promotional pictures, it was a group effort.”

The 2020 Emerald Awards were presented at the Kansas Association of Health Care Communicators Virtual Fall Conference on Sept. 11, 2020. The KAHCC is a group of healthcare communications professionals dedicated to improving communication with our communities, health care employees, physicians, media and more.

Evergreens are an ancient tradition The tradition of Christmas trees goes all the way back to ancient Egyptians and Romans, who marked the winter solstice with evergreens as a reminder that spring would return. So if you decorate with a green tree, wreaths or evergreen garland, you're throwing it back – way back. You can thank Prince Albert for your Christmas tree You might want to brew a cup o' tea when trimming your tree this year to pay homage to its origins. When Prince Albert of Germany introduced a tree to his new wife, Queen Victoria of England, it really took off across the pond. A drawing of the couple in front of a Christmas tree appeared in Illustrated London News in 1848 and as we say, the idea went viral.

Forages and Supplementation for Cattle Herbicide-resistant grain sorghum hybrids Rachael Boyle Phillips-Rooks District Extension Agent Agriculture and Natural Resources

Weather has varied widely across the state during the growing season and consequently impacted pasture and forage availability. Producers may have gaps to fill in their forage inventory either because of quality and/or quantity issues. Others may be in the position of looking for marketing opportunities for surplus supplies. US ethanol production is currently 88-90% of pre-COVID levels. Kansas ethanol plants are showing strong demand for inputs. Distillers grains are an attractive supplement because they provide both protein and energy and, in some diets, more energy than an equal amount of corn.

The balance of protein and energy in distiller’s grains and the lack of starch have made distillers a very popular supplement for many classes of cattle. Energy may be the most limiting nutrient in some forage samples. Thus, higher energy feeds such as corn, wheat midds, soyhulls, wheat bran, and/or corn gluten feed are needed. Corn is not preferred as an energy feedstuff as it can lead to substitution effects (cattle eat less forage – especially if protein is not balanced); however, a general rule of thumb is to feed at less than 0.3% of body weight to avoid the negative impact on fiber digestion. Since the starch in corn is a concern, offering the non-starch energy feeds such as wheat midds, soyhulls, and corn

gluten often provides a safer option. A producer can feed higher amounts of these feedstuffs, which is beneficial if there is a severe deficiency in energy in the forage. It is important to make sure and test the hay you are feeding for both protein and energy values, so that the appropriate supplements can be offered to cattle. Check for nitrates in forage sorghums and sudans as a routine practice. Once a forage analysis has been conducted and an inventory of the available supplements priced, work with a nutritionist and/ or K-State Research and Extension professional to help develop a balanced diet for your cattle. For more information, please contact the local K-State Research and Extension Office.

Herbicide-resistant grain sorghum has been a topic of conversation for several years. Now there are some questions among varieties available for next spring, with others getting closer to commercialization. iGrowth – iGrowth grain sorghum has been developed by Advanta Seeds. These hybrids are resistant to the herbicide imazamox, which you might remember as Raptor or Beyond. The only formulation labeled for use in iGrowth sorghum Imiflex. UPL is seeking approval for pre-emergence and post-emergence applications of the product, however approval has not yet been granted. Key species controlled by imazamox include large crabgrass, foxtails, seedling johnsongrass, and shattercane, kochia, common lambsquarters, morningglories, nightshades, pigweeds, common

sunflower, and velvetleaf. One concern with this technology is that resistance to ALS-inhibiting herbicides is found in kochia, Palmer amaranth, waterhemp, common sunflower, shattercane, and other weed species in Kansas. Inzen – Inzen grain sorghum hybrids are resistant to the herbicide nicosulfuron. The formulation approved for use in grain sorghum is called Zest, but nicosulfuron is also the active ingredient in Accent and a component of Pastora, Revulin Q and Steadfast. This herbicide has received an EPA label for application to Inzen varieties that are between 4 and 20 inches tall. Inzen is primarily active on grass weeds, including large crabgrass, foxtails, and sandburs. In addition to concerns regarding herbicide-resistant weeds, producers should be aware of long rotation intervals to some other crops including non-Inzen grain sorghum varieties. Inzen sorghum and

Zest are approved for commercial production with limited availability expected for 2021. Double Play – This trait has been developed by S&W Seeds. Double Play grain sorghum hybrids are resistant to the herbicide quizalofop, which is the active ingredient in Assure II. ADAMA is currently awaiting EPA approval for the herbicide label that will be used in Double Play grain sorghum. Quizalofop is a herbicide that only controls grasses, but it is quite good at controlling species such as shattercane and crabgrass. Weed resistance to these herbicides is less common, but it can still be a concern eventually, although resistance to Quizalofop has not been confirmed in Kansas. The use of product names is used as ease of clarifying the content of this article. In no way is this a recommendation for or against the compounds’ use.

For January through October, beef exports trailed last year's pace by 7% in volume (1.02 million mt) and 8% in value ($6.2 billion). Beef muscle cut exports trended higher than a year ago in October, increasing 5% to 85,445 mt valued at $573.8 million (up 1%). January-October muscle cut exports were 5% below last year in volume (791,694 mt) and 8% lower in value ($5.48 billion). "While the tight labor situation continues to limit the cut and variety meat specifications available for export, red meat demand is strengthening in many critical markets,"

"October exports of bone-in hams, for example, were near the July record and up 50% from a year ago. This has been a volatile year, filled with shifts in consumer preferences and a lot of uncertainty for international buyers. But the U.S. industry has responded positively to these challenges and the demand dynamics for red meat are quite strong as we approach year's end. When the gains made at retail over the past several months are combined with a stronger foodservice recovery, the prospects for export growth are very promising."
