Georgia Southern University President Brooks A. Keel, Ph.D., testified before a Congressional committee in Washington, D.C., in April at a hearing examining higher education issues. The House Committee on Education and the Workforce held a hearing titled “Keeping College Within Reach: Meeting the Needs of Contemporary Students,” where Keel spoke on the importance of preparing the 21st century workforce and the need for a “Workforce-Grant University.” In his prepared remarks, Keel expressed how Georgia Southern serves as an example of a Workforce-Grant University. Over the past year, the House committee has held the “Keeping the College Within Reach” series of hearings as Congress reauthorizes the Higher Education Act and the hearings provide an opportunity for committee members to examine policy and programs to support continued innovation in postsecondary education. o r g i a

Southeast Bulloch High School’s (SEB) Advanced Chorus recently sang in a mass choir concert at Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium in New York City during the Choirs of America (COA) Nationals for Mixed Choirs. Z. Randall Stroope, the Doug and Nickie Burns Endowed Chair of Choral Music at Oklahoma State University and one of the world’s most respected choral composers and conductors, was the event’s master conductor. While in New York, students participated in adjudicated performances, reviews, observations, clinics with renowned clinicians such as Eugene Rogers, Suzi Digby and Jo-Michael Scheibe, school exchanges, vocal master classes and workshops. Brent Whitaker, SEB’s fine arts department head and director of choral programs, leads the accomplished, competitionlevel group. SEB’s choral program has grown from approximately 20 students, when it first became a full-time program in 2006, to approximately 150 currently. The program consistently produces vocalists that are selected for GMEA’s All-State Chorus and All-State Reading Chorus, for the state’s most accomplished student vocalists.

The Clubhouse in Statesboro has broken ground on a new eco-friendly Go Cart track – the Coca-Cola 125 Raceway under construction by Lavender and Associates, Inc. The raceway facility is expected to be open for business in early summer. The Coca-Cola 125 Raceway, sponsored by Statesboro Coca-Cola Bottling Co., is the only one of its kind in Southeast Georgia. The raceway takes drivers on a 1.25 mile adventure, and features 28 of the industry’s most advanced fully electric, environmentally friendly go carts. Not only does the new track add another entertainment option to The Clubhouse’s attractions, it also adds new construction jobs for Bulloch County, 20 more Clubhouse employees, and is expected to draw customers not only from Bulloch, but surrounding counties as well. n t h e mov ie s w in n ing ch a nge s e v ery t hing. It’s a lways a bou t t h e underdogs, or a rag-tag team of misfits coming from behind at the last minute to win big. Only in real life could the story be even more inspiring; once in a lifetime the group is a winning team before the game is even played. In the spring of 2013, Bulloch Academy girls basketball coach Paul Webb had low expectations for the 2013-2014 season. He’d lost his number one player from the year before, senior GISA All-State forward Anna Newton, who led the 2012 team in its second consecutive regional championship. Webb didn’t have a replacement in mind for Newton as he watched summer practices and assessed the player’s strengths and weaknesses. He had eleven girls to work with. Like most coaches, Webb moved the players around to determine who would play best in each position. To get the girls into shape he enlisted B.A. math teacher and track coach Beth Burke. A former basketball player during Webb’s rookie season 26 years ago, Burke had a special interest in the team. Both of her daughters, Haley and Ashley, had played for Webb. They were also very competitive players on the backyard court at home where their skills were honed against their mom, their dad, Bryan Burke, and brother, Taylor.

by Jenny Starling Foss photos by Frank Fortune

Sporting Life ‹‹ May/June 2014 • 13

From her success with the track team, Webb knew Burke was a superb athletic trainer. He decided to enlist the players in what became known as Burke’s Boot Camp, a tough series of daily afternoon strength and conditioning sessions that lasted throughout the summer. Admittedly more of a game strategist than a drill sergeant, Webb said, “I did not like to see the girls suffer.”

According to Burke, “It was a tough love kind of thing. At our first camp the third week of June, we could see these girls had speed. All five starters were on the track team. Russell specializes in Commercial Lines at BBWH and is ready to assist you.

Head Coach: Paul Webb Asst. Coaches: Beth Burke, Regina Days-Bryan, Will Dubberly

With the team’s speed already an advantage, Webb’s and Burke’s strategy over the summer became to “out-condition” the other teams. There was something else the coaches noticed at the first camp. “It was something really special,” Webb said. “It wasn’t talent, it was more of a team spirit – a bond thing. The players were like sisters. There was none of the drama or fighting or jealousy that I had experienced with other teams in the past. These girls were very friendly and they really liked playing ball.” “We always try to do things with a team to help them bond that are not obvious,” Webb said. “We go away to camp and spend the night. We have ‘secret sisters’ where the girls draw names and give each other gifts of encouragement. With this group, the bond was already there.” Webb noticed something else extraordinary about the girls during game six or seven – each had a scripture written on the top of her right hand. “They agreed on the same scripture, what it meant, and how it applied. From a coaching standpoint, that’s a great sign – it was team driven.”

This display of spiritual connection was something Webb had not seen before in 26 years of coaching. The inspiration began to show in their games. “In basketball, some players will let outside influences pressure them to do things outside their team role, but these girls didn’t do that,” said Burke. “They knew their role and did it. There was no conflict about performing.” The five starters all season were senior post Chelsea Oglesby, senior wing guard Danielle Atkinson, junior point guard Ashley Burke, junior post Pate Lomax, and junior guard Page Spence. (sidebar) “The entire season our theme or strategy was to use what the girls did best. We had an exceptionally athletic team,” Webb said. “We could out-run all of our competition on the court. We ‘tired-out’ our opponents. We also put the ball in the point guard’s hands and let her make the decisions.” “I was more nervous than Ashley,” Burke said. “Her being point guard meant the opposing players would try to trap her. Plus I knew the whole team relied on her.” Ashley didn’t disappoint. She not only started every game, she was the only player who never stepped out of play. “She controlled the court and she played every game, for 34 minutes straight at a time. She’s a once-in-a-career player,” said Webb. Other veteran players like Pate Lomax and Chelsea Oglesby paced the game with Burke, while seven of the team led at least one game in points throughout the season. The team’s special blend of brawn and spirit led the Lady Gators to a 27-1 single season win record leading into the Region 4 AAA tournament in Augusta. On the Sunday preceding the regional tournament, Coach Webb received some sad news. His father, Raiford Charlie “R.C.” Webb, had passed away peacefully at home at age 90. The funeral was set for Wednesday, one day before the regional tournament was to be played. “I was very touched when the whole team attended the family visitation on Tuesday evening,” said Webb.

“I was moved even more at the funeral Wednesday morning when I saw the team all sitting together in the chapel.” During the service, the minister read from a favorite Bible verse R.C. carried in his wallet, Psalm 27:1: “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (KJV) The next day the team was on the road to Augusta for the regionals. Webb was there for the girls, as they had been there for him and his family. The squad faced rival academies John Milledge and Pinewood Christian in challenges for the title. As the team warmed-up on the court Webb fist-bumped junior guard Kristin Kingery and noticed for the first time the scripture written on her hand. It was Psalm 27:1. On her other hand he could see the initials R. C. Webb was overcome with emotion, hugging Kristen and the team’s scribe, senior wing guard Danielle Atkinson. For Webb the gesture was significant. His usual tradition of calling his dad and mom after every game could be continued with news of the team’s beautiful gesture. In a statement released after the game, senior center and lead scorer, Chelsea Oglesby, commented, “We came in believing that we could beat Pinewood and get a three-peat, but we had to play together as a team, make smart decisions, and continue to have faith in ourselves and each other.” The regional victory brought the Lady Gators’ winning record to 29-1, but for Webb the victory against Pinewood was even more memorable – it marked the 500 th win of his career. As the buzzer sounded Webb was instantly surrounded as players, parents, fans, and supporters stormed the court with congratulations, balloons, and hugs. From the regional tournament, the Lady Gators advanced to the state tournament in Macon where they faced strong opposition from other teams in Region A A A. “The Macon schools – Tattnall, Westfield, and Stratford – dominated A A A,” Webb said.

life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (KJV) – Psalm 27:1

“We bypassed them along the way to the state tournament, but we had to play them all in the final round.” Three times the Lady Gators finished second at the state level: 1977, 1978, and 2010. This time according to B.A. Director of Institutional Development and sports writer Rahn Hutcheson, it was Bulloch Academy’s superior guard play that made the difference. “Burke, Atkinson, senior Brooke Gilbert and junior Page Spence were quicker and could shoot better than their Stratford counterparts. Defense was also the key as the Lady Gator guards created turnovers, stole the ball, and wrestled the Stratford girls for jump balls.” For the first time in the history of Bulloch Academy, the Lady Gators brought home the State A A A Championship. “It was a magical season,” stated Webb. “A once-in-a-lifetime team.” With maybe a little something extra, too. R.C.’s favorite scripture, Psalm 27:1, just happened to hold the same numbers as the Lady Gator’s regular season record of 27wins – 1 loss, and R.C. stood for more than Raiford Charlie. It also stood for Region Champs. n

t is difficult to summarize how great our experience was in Cuba. Everything about our trip was memorable.... the people, the food, the history, Old Havana, the Malecon, Las Terrazas, the activities, and our guides were all great. I am glad that Cuba is not spoiled by an abundance of overzealous American tourists, but I do wish that more people could experience it.” – Dave Cusick, Friendly Planet traveler

S

he has wanderlust and a spirit of adventure, with a penchant for discovery. An elementary school educator and counselor by profession, Statesboro native Tracy Chandler Lewis considers life to be one long learning experience. Her favorite subjects to teach were probably geography and history, but she has a particular appreciation for the Arts and for music. Her special interests have led her from the classroom to locations abroad where she now prefers to spend her time at recess - exploring exotic cultures. Her first introduction to the country of Cuba happened at age nine when she moved with her parents to Puerto Rico for five years. There she recalls, “I established relationships with friends whose grandparents were Cuban.” Making friends there and being immersed in the Latin culture had a lasting effect.

26 • Statesboro Magazine ›› From Here To There

Flash forward to 2006, when Tracy had the opportunity to visit Cuba with her brother–in–law on a religious visa for missionary work. Fidel Castro was still president. The Soviet collapse of communism had already occurred in 1991, and Cuba had been without a strong communist ally for 15 years. But the often televised images of a cigar wielding dictator in camouflage and oppressed citizens in the streets were not the images she saw. “It was just like the 50’s or 60’s,” she said. “It felt like being on a movie set.” Seemingly sixty years back in time, the Caribbean island of Cuba is only 90 miles from the United States. Most Americans are not aware of the island’s close proximity or the rich Latin culture with influences from Africa and Europe that still exists after years of communist rule.

The music, dance, art, and architecture is so

beautiful and inspiring. There are cobblestone streets and everything is so colorful, including the cars which are American built from the 1950s and 1960s.” – Tracy Chandler Lewis Fidel Castro resigned as president in 2008, and his brother Raúl Castro was elected the new president of the Republic of Cuba. In his acceptance speech, Raúl promised the people he would remove many of the economic and other restrictions placed on citizens for many years, including travel. Citizens are now able to obtain exit visas with a passport and national ID card. In 2012, Tracy was in Cuba again on tour when one of her friends spotted a promotional flyer soliciting tour guides for Friendly Planet Travel, a Pennsylvania company specializing in group tours worldwide. On a lark, Tracy decided to apply for the position, and is now a group leader for Friendly Planet, specializing in educational tours to Cuba. Cuba is now open for tourists and visitors, but one must have a valid reason for visiting the country. It is still illegal for

ordinary American vacationers to hop on a plane bound for Cuba, which has been under a United States economic embargo for nearly 50 years. True, plenty have dodged the restrictions — and continue to do so — by flying there from another country like Mexico or Canada (for Americans, traveling to Cuba is technically not illegal, but it might as well be since the United States prohibits its citizens from spending money in Cuba, with exceptions for students, journalists, Cuban-Americans and others with legal reasons to travel there). And while Washington has also expanded licensing for educational groups traveling to Cuba by loosening requirements, travelers joining an educational trip must still receive credit toward a degree. It is easier for United States citizens who do not have special status as working journalists or scholars to visit Cuba legally, so long as they go with a licensed operator.

In addition to education, other reasons approved for traveling include religion, horticulture, and healthcare. Trips to Cuba are not the typical Caribbean vacation of beach hopping and mojito-swilling. Days are filled with a busy itinerary. “I’m usually up and ready to go at 7:30 a.m., breakfast for the group is at 9:00 a.m. and then we begin our day of discovery. Many things about the culture of Cuba are to be admired. The island has a 100% native population with a 1% rate of illiteracy. Attributed to the government’s Literacy Campaign of 1961, when Fidel Castro sent “literacy brigades” into rural areas to educate the populace with phenomenal success. Families now teach each other to read and write. In addition, everyone plays a musical instrument and most are engaged in expressing themselves through Art media. All employment is controlled by the government with standard wages, even for professionals like doctors. But there is a high ratio of doctors with one in every seventy people holding a medical license. There is no free enterprise, except for some private restaurants called paladars, where you may find doctors working as waiters for the tips. The Cuban peso servers as the country’s currency in the all cash society. Workers receive a portion of their wages in convertible pesos, the rest in national pesos. Street vendors and small shops selling basics prefer the national peso. Visitors and “dollar shops” prefer the convertible peso which is 25 times more valuable than the normal peso confusing shoppers who often perceive prices as “too cheap.” “There are no devices on the streets - cell phones, iPad, laptops – and no internet,” Tracy said. “The people are very friendly and they love Americans. It is very hot and humid, but the culture is amazing. The music, dance, art, and architecture is so beautiful and inspiring. There are cobblestone streets and everything is so colorful, including the cars which are American built from the 1950s and 1960s. People ride bicycles and some have the cars which they can easily keep running because they’re mechanical. The only problem they have is acquiring parts, but they are inventive and have great ingenuity.”

A

natural athlete and competitive runner, Abraham Lin was sidelined in the early 1990s when an auto accident left him with a broken arm and an extended hospital stay. Fortunately, there was no loss of function in his arm, but the experience had a spiritual effect on the young man. He was very grateful for the well-trained medical professionals who helped him overcome the injury. Lin felt that maybe the incident was a sign from above pointing him toward a career in medicine. Living Well ‹‹ May/June 2014 • 37

Dr. Lin describes transradial treatment as, “Instead of entering the artery through the groin area to reach the blockage in one of the arteries near the heart, the entry is made

through the wrist instead. This procedure is growing

in

popularity and has several patient benefits.” – Abraham Lin 38 • Statesboro Magazine ›› Living Well

A native of North Carolina, Lin was reared by traditional Asian parents, Chin and Cheng Lin, who emigrated from Taiwan in the 1970s. Christian by faith, the Southern Baptist recalls, “My parents came from humble beginnings and worked very hard. They believed their sole purpose was providing for the family. They devoted everything to me getting an education. They prayed for me and supported me through 16 years of school.” Sixteen years of medical research, residencies, and fellowships, which began when he graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Minor in Chemistry. Lin was accepted by Eastern Virginia Medical School, upon graduation from U.N.C., and completed his M.D. in 2005. Then it was on to the University of Florida for a residency in Internal Medicine and fellowships in General Cardiology and Intervention/Peripheral Cardiology. The extra time in training meant Lin had access to the large Florida retirement community with opportunities to gain valuable experience in taking care of patients’ cardiac and vascular blockages. Also while at U.F., Lin had the opportunity to train under one of interventional cardiology’s early pioneers, Dr. C. Richard Conti, a physician whom he now credits with being an important early mentor. In 1996, for his contributions to cardiac medicine, Dr. Conti was elected to Johns Hopkins University’s Society of Scholars. He served as Professor of Medicine and Director of the Cardiovascular Division at U.F. from 1974 until 1998. According to Lin, “He made cardiology what it is today. He taught me that the heart is a complicated instrument and we must respect it and take care of it.”

It was while attending U.F. that Lin met his wife, Farrah, a native of Alabama. Dr. Lin gives much credit to his wife for his success in medicine, “I have a strong supportive wife. I could not have done it without her. She makes me complete.” The Lins are the proud parents of two boys: three-and-a-half-year-old Corbin Abraham Lin and 18-month-old Caiden Isaac Lin. “I believe like my parents – take care of family and loved ones first, and the rest falls into place,” Dr. Lin said. Dr. Lin and his family moved to Statesboro last year when he joined the staff of Statesboro Cardiology to practice with Dr. Stanley Shin. “This is a good town to raise kids,” he said. “So far my family has been very happy here.” A strong advocate of preventive care, Dr. Lin stated, “If I could do this and treat people medicinally that would be best. No invasive treatment.” But he is dedicated to serving East Georgia Regional Medical Centers’ patients as needed with the latest in interventional cardiac technology. Dr. Lin has introduced a new procedure for clearing blockages in arteries and veins known as transradial intervention not previously available to patients at the hospital.

Dr. Lin describes transradial treatment as, “Instead of entering the artery through the groin area to reach the blockage in one of the arteries near the heart, the entry is made through the wrist instead. This procedure is growing in popularity and has several patient benefits. Entering through the wrist means the procedure is less invasive; it requires less recovery time; there is less chance of bleeding; less anesthesia; less down time and quicker healing.” Entry through the wrist also means the patient doesn’t have to lie flat on his or her back for eight hours following the procedure with pressure on the incision site to prevent the entry site from bleeding. Although it is the preferred method of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in Europe and in Japan, adoption of transradial PCI in the U. S. has been slower than in other areas of the world. Interest is growing in the U.S., however, as increasing numbers of medical schools offer the training for medical students, and as patient demand for the treatment grows. Increasing exposure to radial interventions during interventional cardiology fellowships is viewed as a means to improve use of the transradial approach among U.S. physicians as well. Dr. Lin also notes, “Transradial procedures can also be used on arteries and veins for peripheral blockages in the legs, kidneys, and lungs.” In addition, he believes the future of interventional and peripheral cardiology and vascular stent placement will include improvements in the stent material itself. “Previous generations of stents were made of wire mesh, while improvement in the current generation includes stents with drug coatings. The future of stents points to ones that are fully absorbable by arteries or veins over time,” he said.

The day will also come when endovascular stent grafts will be offered. That means a system for treating the full body will be available in the future to treat not only cardiac and vascular blockages, but also thoracic aneurysm repair. Dr. Lin believes EGRMC will lead the way in the region for the best in this interventional care. The biggest challenge so far for Dr. Lin has been, “Trying to be there for my family. I hope Farrah will give me more children, but I have to be home.” He said, “I don’t get stressed. But, you will work hard for what you want.” One of the great rewards for him is, “Being able to do what I love. There’s a difference between a job and a career. I love my career. There is a great amount of self-fulfillment in doing what I love to do.” But the family will always come first, “My family is number one. Going home every day - hearing that noise my family makes when I open the door – that makes it all worth it.” n

SERVICES

B

uilt in July 2000, East Georgia Regional Medical Center is a four-level, 150-bed acute care hospital featuring a Women’s Pavilion and an adjacent medical office building. The hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, a distinction awarded only to those healthcare facilities that maintain the highest standards of quality. East Georgia Regional Medical Center’s healthcare team consists of approximately 750 employees and over 95 physicians representing a wide range of specialties. The expansion of medical services and professionals, along with a major investment in technology, has firmly established East Georgia Regional’s reputation for providing a higher medical standard. East Georgia Regional Medical Center offers a 24-hour physician-staffed emergency department, a Level II neonatal center, outpatient services including same day surgery and ambulatory care, a pain management center, a wound care clinic, a cardiac catheterization lab, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, and state-of-the-art diagnostic procedures including digital mammography, MRI, CT, PET/CT, nuclear medicine, and interventional radiology. The Women’s Pavilion provides dedicated services to women of all ages, and includes eight labor, delivery, and recovery suites. Each month, our Surgical Services department performs over 1000 outpatient procedures and our Emergency Room treats over 3,500 patients. Over 135 babies are born in the Women’s Pavilion each month. East Georgia Regional Medical Center opened an Interventional Cardiology service in April 2010. This expansion of our cardiology program has allowed patients needing angioplasty and/or stent placement to receive these services without leaving Statesboro. Electrophysiology services were also added to the cardiology program in August 2011. The addition of these services have dramatically increased the quality of care in our community. In October 2010, East Georgia Regional became one of only four hospitals in Southeast Georgia capable of performing robotic surgery. This highly specialized surgical tool allows surgeons to perform procedures that are less invasive and require less recovery time. The surgical robot has high definition optics, a simulation module for physician training, and will be used to perform increasingly complex surgical procedures, including thoracic and general surgery. hen I moved to Statesboro eight years ago my son thankfully intervened and my child got a good talking-to about was an infant. Riding down Savannah Avenue and making good choices and the danger of picking up snakes if you seeing the sprawling southern porches, I felt like I was in the don’t know if they are poisonous or not. Not wanting to get in middle of a Fannie Flagg novel. I wondered if someone in town trouble at home, he neglected to tell me. Fuming the remainder of the football practice and queswould serve up some fried green tomatoes. To say I was thrilled that my child would grow up here is an understatement. I looked tioning the fatal error in parenting that had led my son to take forward to seeing the friendships he would form and couldn’t up “snake handling,” I was relieved when practice was over and wait until there was a gaggle of little boys running, laughing, I could finally get to the bottom of Snakegate from the culprit and playing in my backyard while I was soaking up the fresh himself. Walking away from the field, I looked down at my sweaty little boy and said, “Do you have something to tell me? South Georgia sunshine and drinking some sweet tea. As the years passed, I indeed found myself with a yard full Something about snakes?” His face instantly looked guilty and of children. My vision of relaxing with tea while watching them he ’fessed up about his poor choice, why he did it, and how he play rarely occurred, instead they kept me on my toes. Daily would never do it again. As we got in the car he asked me, “How did you find out?” life was made up of Rec league practices, school functions, and church with the same group of families and children. I loved the At that moment, I smiled to myself, turned around to him with sense of community my child was growing up with. It wasn’t a straight face and in a very matter-of-fact way stated, “I’m your until my precious, can-do-no-wrong seven-year-old decided to mother. It’s my job to know everything.” What I really knew, and he would grow to understand, is get sneaky that small town life revealed its greatest asset – the that he has many Mothers. Because he is growing up in StatesMommas amongst us. It all began one day last fall while sitting and watching boro, I can rest assured our community has an eye on all of our my son play flag football with his Rec league team. While I children, including mine. And, as he grows older, makes choices profess to know nothing about football, or sports for that matter, both good and bad, and decides to try other “snake-y” moves, I always enjoyed watching the kids run and play on the field our community of Mommas will be there, helping to keep tabs while I was catching up with the other parents. Halfway into on him, and letting me know along the way. n the practice, a dear friend and fellow Mom on the sidelines looked up at me and said, “Is it true? Your son really picked up the snake at school?” As soon as she asked the question, three other Moms chimed in with various comments such as, “Yes, I heard that” or “The boys were talking about that at my house,” and my personal favorite – “No one could believe he did it!” I started to get dizzy with confusion about the snake situation which had apparently rocked the 2nd grade. “Wait a second,” I said. “Please tell me what you are talking about.” As it turns out, a snake had wiggled its way onto the playground at school. At recess and in true little boy fashion, they had all gathered around the playground visitor for a closer look. Passionate about reptiles and perhaps trying to be cool, my son decided to pick up the snake to show it to his friends. When he did, a teacher May/June 2014 • 75

SPIRITUAL PATHWAYS

here’s a beautiful pond with a dock for fishing on the route I take from our house to the church I am currently serving as interim pastor. Suppose I am on my way on Easter Sunday, dressed in my best clothes, and as I pass the pond I see a young child, alone, on the dock. As I glance, the child suddenly stumbles and falls into the water and is splashing around trying to get out. It looks like drowning is inevitable. What should I do? Would anyone disagree with my feeling that I should stop my car, run to the pond, jump in and rescue the child? Sure, it would mean getting my clothes muddy and either canceling my Easter preaching or delaying it until I could return home and find something dry to change into. Yes, it would be an inconvenience but compared to rescuing a child from certain death the inconvenience would be insignificant. Failing to save a child when I could do so is morally wrong.¹

Bill Perry grew up in Live Oak, Florida, a small town just south of Valdosta, GA. After graduating from Stetson University, he earned three degrees from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. In 2004, he retired as pastor of First Baptist Church of Statesboro after serving that congregation for 22 years. He and his wife, Margaret, registrar of Statesboro High School before her retirement in 2005, have two daughters, five grandsons, and one granddaughter. Bill has been very much involved in community life in Statesboro. He is an avid reader and has been a runner since 1973.

Did you know that in our world approximately 26,500 children die each day of preventable causes related to poverty? If I have a responsibility to the small child falling into a pond do I not also have a responsibility to the 26,500 that die because of poverty? Somehow I am able to depersonalize a large group like that and respond with a lot less concern. Let’s try another approach. We’ve all been concerned about the disappearance of the Malaysia Airlines jetliner several weeks ago. As I write this article not a trace has been found of that large jet with 239 people aboard. The media has been keeping us up to date on the search. Suppose when you get up tomorrow and turn on your television you hear that 100 jet planes crashed during the night killing all 26,500 aboard. Can you imagine the global reaction to that shocking news? Then suppose the next day the same thing happened: 100 planes down, 26,500 killed. The same thing the next day, and the next, and the next. Can you imagine the emergency steps that would be taken?! And yet 26,500 children died yesterday of preventable causes, and it will happen again today and tomorrow and the next day. Nearly 10 million in the course of a year. The question: how can suffering children in far-off lands become personal for us? Yes, I’m sad about them, but how can I learn to look at them as my own children? Why can’t I grieve for them, weep over them, respond to the conditions with greater urgency? It’s as if these children are the ones robbed and beaten and left to die on the Jericho Road, and I’m the priest who passed by on the other side. Open our eyes, Lord, that we may see. Open our hearts, Lord, that we may feel. Open our minds, Lord, that we may understand. Open our hands, Lord, that we may give.² n ¹ Adapted from the writings of Peter Singer. ² The statistics gathered from Richard Stearns, The Hole in Our Gospel (Thomas Nelson, 2010). e’s been a friend for a long time! The kind you don’t have to see or talk to on a regular basis. The kind, if you need him, he’s there! The kind, when you get together, the conversation, the presence pick up right where they left off. Teaching has been his life. Had he gone into corporate with his talents, his intellectual prowess, he would be president of Ford or Chevy, or the Admiral of the fleet! He would have been equipped with an office on the top floor with plush carpet and fine furniture; he would have lived ’midst green and red phone’s lights blinking! Instead, he

chose to study for the Masters and Doctorate degrees. And from those carrels, moved through the years teaching college students how to deal with the English Language. How to unfold the mystery lying in the classics, poetry, prose! His lectures, as was the subject matter, were classic, punctuated with wisdom and wit. His courses in Advanced Grammar and The Works of Shakespeare always filled up quickly. He will admit, his sessions were the combination of informing and performing. To know this man is to know a man. His athletic activity in high school garnered superlatives in football and baseball. So, now as a Dad, he tosses the football in the afternoon with his boys. Saturday mornings he shoots hoops with his daughters. Now grown, his children readily endow him as a loving Dad and their best friend and a dedicated husband “to our mom!” Now in his late fifties, he remains vibrant, a state of the art humorist; respected by his colleagues and student majors! And with all that, we had coffee not so long ago. Sitting together in the tiny Shoppe, he looked at me and said, “I’m hanging it up next year! It’s been a good career. Very satisfying – gratifying may say it better,” he smiled. “Now the road leads for me and my wife to have some time for ourselves.” Oh how refreshing it was to hear my friend confirm their love for one another still so very much alive! “We’ve had the good fortune of bringing up our children in a home where there was, and still is, love, respect and discipline. We always made certain our children knew they were loved. Now, we are back where we started – just the two of us.” “But, what will you do?” I asked. He settled into the booth a bit further and then he looked at me and said, “Ric, we are going to keep on living. Living! Our roles as Mom and Dad will never change and with that we will feel free to travel to distant shores; walk those hallways I have lectured about. Why, I reckon we will hold hands as we move across cobblestone streets. We will become students again!” That night, laid back in my easy chair, the memory of my friend’s smile and plans for a new adventure, his wife by his side, return to me and I thought of Harry Chapin’s wonderful ballad, All of life is a Circle. How fitting those lyrics resonate to the life lived by my dear friend! n May/June 2014 • 81

out. If there is one thing in life that you can never lose beside yourself, it is the hope for a better day, because there will always be one. Just as there are bad times; there will come good times as well. And

even though fear may be trying to cloud your mind, fill your mind with hopeful thoughts, and remember to keep stepping out on faith as well. — Simon Junior Brown

Here for your family every step of the way.

Sarah Voiselle, SHS graduate, UGA student Vic & Marianna Voiselle, proud parents

We’ve been with you since you brought her home from the hospital and now you are sending her off to college. This is another step that requires careful planning and hard work. From our Student Checking Account1 and VISA Check Card2 to the conveniences of Synovus Online and Mobile Banking3, we’re here for your family every step of the way. You need a bank for life. That’s Sea Island Bank.

All accounts are subject to approval. 1. Student checking is available to students less than 26 years of age. This is a joint account with a parent or guardian for children under the age of 18 (In Alabama, age 19 unless married). The student must be identified as the primary account owner. The account converts to an Access Checking account after the 26th birthday of the youngest account holder. 2. When you apply for a check card, credit card or other credit products, we will base the approval on a review of your personal credit report and score. 3. Use of Mobile Banking requires your mobile service provider’s data and/or text plan, for which charges may apply. Minors are unable to enroll in Synovus Online Banking and Mobile Banking. Sea Island Bank is a division of Synovus Bank. Synovus Bank, Member FDIC, is chartered in the state of Georgia and operates under multiple trade names across the Southeast. Divisions of Synovus are not separately FDIC-insured banks. The FDIC coverage extended to deposit customers is that of one insured bank.
