April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month. Approximately 43,250 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year and only 57% of these newly diagnosed patients will survive after five years. While oral cancer is most commonly found in those who have heavily utilized tobacco products throughout their lives, it can also be diagnosed in young individuals or those who have never smoked a single cigarette. Additional risk factors include exposure to ultraviolet radiation, alcohol use, and the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV16). Often, oral cancer goes unnoticed by patients in the early stages and thus, does not become diagnosed until late in development. The American Dental Association recommends a visit with your dentist at least every six months. If your general dentist finds a suspicious lesion or mass, you will likely be referred to a surgeon for a consultation. Based on the surgeon’s assessment, a biopsy may be performed or the lesion may be observed for a short period of time. Once cancer is diagnosed, treatment may involve surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or a combination of procedures . Current research is focused on understanding phases of cancer development and applying new therapies for treatment. For now, minimizing risk factors and early detection are crucial in achieving the best prognosis. Fabulist

Starting on December 15, 2014 we invited readers to help us choose 100 of the most fabulous people, places, and things in Statesboro. A broad range of categories included everything from “Best News Story of 2014” to “Best Dirt Road in the County.” Ballots for voting were inserted into the January/February issue of Statesboro Magazine and readers were also invited to complete the survey online at www.statesboromagazine.com. Voting ended on January 19, 2015, at midnight, and hundreds of ballots later, we tallied the votes to bring you our first ever Statesboro Fabulist!

1

Most Fabulous Woman of 2014 – Jan Johnston Moore, Mayor of Statesboro

If you’ve watched Mayor Jan Moore since she began her administration as Statesboro’s first woman mayor in January of 2014, you’ve seen her spearhead the revitalization of South Main Street through The Blue Mile initiative; endorse the creation of Tax Allocation Districts for future redevelopment of blighted areas; tighten-up on under-age drinking; initiate a healthy lifestyle program for 63 city employees outfitting them with fitness trackers; and witness a 10.5% reduction in crime her first year in office. For all she’s accomplished this year, Statesboro Magazine readers voted Mayor Moore first again – the Fabulist’s first Most Fabulous Woman!

31

Most Fabulous Public Safety Official – Wendell Turner, Public Safety Director

What’s the 411 on the most fabulous 911 official? Creating partnerships in public safety is Wendell Turner’s strength. Under his direction, the multi-jurisdictional Statesboro-Bulloch Crime Suppression Team merged City Police, the Sheriff’s Department, and University Police, resulting in a 10.5% reduction in major crimes, the lowest in seven years. He’s strengthened community buy-in by developing programs such as the Citizen’s Police Academy, and PACT (Police and Citizens Together). Turner also increased officer training and improved technology by implementing the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting program.

12 • Statesboro Magazine

99

Most Fabulous Overall City Employee – Robert Cheshire, Interim City Manager

It was unanimous! After spending 15-plus years as Statesboro’s City Engineer, Robert Cheshire was appointed by Council to fill in as City Manager in July of 2014. He immediately stepped up to the challenge by holding meetings with department heads and community partners, assuring a smooth transition by allowing everyone a voice in Statesboro’s future. In the last six months, Cheshire has stabilized City operations and overseen advancements in law enforcement, community redevelopment, and expansions, with the opening of a new Convention & Visitors Bureau on South Main and a Performing Arts addition to the Averitt Center on West Main.

61

Most Fabulous Man of 2014 –Willie Fritz, Georgia Southern Football Coach

IIt takes a high-flying achiever to take on the job as head football coach to a second-tier college team transitioning to a higher league after a 4-4 record their last season in the Southern Conference. It may have been the Eagle’s 2013 end-of-season come-frombehind win over SEC powerhouse, the University of Florida Gators that cinched the deal for Willie Fritz. He could see the Eagle’s had spunk. A brand new stadium with new athletic facilities didn’t hurt either. In 2014, his first season, Coach Fritz’s tweaked triple-option led the Eagles to an 8 – 0, first-year, first-place, Sun Belt Conference title. A fabulous welcome to Our House for our Most Fabulous Man of 2014!

Covering 11 acres of what was once the early 20th century farm of Dan & Catherine Bland, Georgia Southern’s Garden of the Coastal Plain offers a beautiful natural park-like setting within Statesboro’s city limits. A magnolia allee, North and South woodland trails, a coastal plain native plant landscape, butterfly borders, a rose arbor, a children’s garden, the Heritage farmyard, the Welchel Camellia Garden, heritage gardens, a bog and a sandhill, and the Kennedy Outdoor Classroom provide one of the Southeast’s most lovely natural settings. Academics.georgiasouthern.edu/garden. 1505 Bland Avenue. 912.871.1149.

4

Most Fabulous Local Sporting Event – Georgia Southern Football

When the giant E.A.G.L.E. flags start flying across the field as 105 players in basic blue and white run fists pumping through a tunnel of cheerleaders and balloons; when you hear the roar of 20,000 fans shouting G.E.O.R.G.I.A. – S.O.U.T.H.E.R.N; When Freedom circles overhead and the band starts playing, you know you’re in Our House. Erk Russell called it “the prettiest little stadium in America.” And our readers agree, there’s no better place to be on a Saturday in the fall.

3

Biggest Statesboro News Story of 2014 – Georgia Southern Wins the Sun Belt Conference Title

News Flash - The Eagles were the first team ever to go unbeaten in conference play in their first Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) season. According to our readers, that’s big news! In the Eagles’ first FBS season, they held to a record of 9-3 overall and were undefeated with a record of 8-0 in Sun Belt Conference play earning outright the conference championship. Only two other teams won a conference title in their first FBS season, Nevada in 1992 and Marshall in 1997.

Statesboro’s Most Involved Couple – Dawn & Jamey Cartee

Talk about a power couple! It’s hard to find an organization in Statesboro that hasn’t benefitted from the community minded generosity of Dr. Dawn Cartee and Jamey Cartee. She’s the president of Ogeechee Technical College and he’s president of St. Andrew’s Builders, a regional construction firm. Both hold a strong belief in community service, volunteering with the Chamber of Commerce, the Statesboro Convention & Visitors Bureau, the hospital board, Statesboro Homebuilders, the Boys & Girls Club, the American Cancer Society, Special Olympics, United Way – there’s just not enough room to list every organization the couple supports. True blue, they’re big Georgia Southern boosters. Along with friends, they even commissioned a fire truck and re-purposed it as a tailgating wagon for football games. They call it “Fired Up!” And those two certainly are.

Most Fabulous Outdoor Green Space – Garden of the Coastal Plain

Most Fabulous Place for Game Day Apparel – The University Store

Need a pair of pompoms? What about a new shirt, hat, or shorts to show your true blue colors on Georgia Southern game day? Our readers chose carefully and hands down, the Georgia Southern Bookstore offers the most authentic apparel and fan-fare needed to cheer the Eagles on to victory. www.gsustore.com. 91 Georgia Avenue. 912.478.5181.

93

Most Fabulous Place to Propose – Sweetheart Circle

When couples still courted and young ladies still swooned, Sweetheart Circle was so named for the romantic spot students knew it to be. Surrounded by the University’s most historic buildings, the manicured expanse of green lawn, beautifully maintained flower beds, and ancient trees, together provide the perfect natural setting for amour. Many through the years have become engaged under the giant oaks as the soft fragrance of magnolias wafted through the air. Now Sweetheart Circle is the traditional place for students who met on campus to pledge their love, and a favorite return destination for alumni.

94

Most Fabulous Local Bakery – Sugar Magnolia

It could be the chewy cakes or maybe it’s the tart lemon bars that have earned Sugar Magnolia a following as Statesboro’s bakery of choice. The smell of fresh baked bread greets customers each morning who can pick-up a steaming cup of coffee and a hot muffin on the way to work, or stay at one of the cozy tables to enjoy the heavenly scent of cookies right out of the oven. www.Sugarmagnoliabakery. com 106 Savannah Avenue. 912.764.2090. She earned a Masters of Fine Art from Pratt Institute of Art in New York before serving in the armed forces. Most Historic Location – The Bulloch County Courthouse

Bulloch County’s original courthouse was built in 1806, but on December 5th, 1864, the 15th Corps of General William Tecumseh Sherman’s army torched it. Rebuilt shortly thereafter, the second courthouse, a two-story framed structure, also burned. In 1894, the Bulloch County Grand Jury decided to build a new structure, much of which still stands today. In 1897, the clock was installed in the tower. The Confederate Monument was erected by the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1909. In 1919, porticos and columns were added. In the 1990s the court house underwent a major renovation removing the white plaster façade and returning the exterior to its original red brick.

Most Fabulous Soul Food Restaurant – Lee’s Restaurant

Fresh ingredients are what make Mellow Mushroom’s pizzas the Most Fabulous. House specialties include crazy names like Kosmic Karma (feta, spinach, and a pesto swirl) and Magical Mystery Tour (Portobello mushrooms, spinach, feta, and mozzarella). The Mighty Meaty is a hearty, more traditional selection with pepperoni, sausage, ground beef, and Applewood smoked bacon. There’s always plenty of mozzarella on a hand tossed chewy crust that can stand up to any number of ingredients if you want to make up your own signature pie. www.mellowmushroom.com. 1098 Bermuda Run. 912.681.4743.

Here’s a customer review from Edward H. of Roanoke Rapids that says it all: “Very humble building, very friendly service, great Southern, country food. For my meat, I had fried chicken, which was excellent. Sides were fried okra (good), macaroni and cheese (good), and creamed corn (delicious). Overall, this was a very good and pleasant experience and a great value.”48 West Jones Avenue. 912.764.4746.

Most Fabulous Local Fundraiser/ Charity Event 2014 – Dancing With the Statesboro Starsl

Whether dancing the Texas Two Step or a 1940’s Swing, community volunteers join with professional dancers each year in an event to raise money for Safe Haven, an organization that helps victims of domestic violence. Held annually since 2011, the participants choreograph a 90-second dance routine to be performed in front of a sellout crowd. Audience members cast $1 votes for the most popular duo. Money is also raised by ticket sales, with advanced tickets usually selling out in one day. So far, the event has raised over $200,000 for Safe Haven, making real “stars” out of the volunteer dancers. www.safehavenstatesboro.org 912.764.4605.

personal reflection of the bride and groom – their tastes, hobbies, and vocations often become a part of the celebration. This year, Weddings by Statesboro Magazine features two local weddings which we think perfectly reflect how today’s couples are creating events that showcase their lives together, blending sentimental elements with the traditional customs of their families to create an event all their own. Our cover girl, Esta Denton, and new husband Aalap Shah, exchanged vows during a resplendent traditional East Asian/ Christian wedding, rare for Statesboro, but now one of the most popular wedding trends in America. Full of significant details, from the mehndi (or henna) designs painted on the bride and groom to the traditional red and white sari (bride) and sherwani (groom) wedding attire, every aspect of the wedding held special meaning. The couple prepared for their marriage with many prewedding, wedding, and post wedding ceremonies covering several days. A series of symbolic rituals were celebrated as the couple became man and wife, and two families were joined together. Another Statesboro area couple, Jamie Samuels and David Cromley, chose a theme of rustic elegance for their wedding celebration. The traditional Christian nuptials took place at First Baptist Church of Statesboro, where the couple incorporated the symbolic washing of each other’s feet during the ceremony. After the wedding, guests were invited to join the couple for dinner and dancing in a converted barn at the family farm, Nellwood, in Brooklet, GA. The couple arrived at the reception on a vintage John Deere tractor, a nod to the Cromley family’s generations of farming tradition. When planning your Statesboro wedding, whether small and intimate or ritualistic and elaborate, you will find the resources you need on the following pages to make your celebration just as custom as our Statesboro brides. Use our 2015 Bridal Resource Guide to create your affair to remember. Best Wishes!

About the Cover Statesboro bride Esta Denton and husband Aalap Shah chose a traditional Hindu/Christian wedding for the time-honored celebration joining their families. Esta is featured here in a ceremonial sari wedding gown with the customary lei of red and white roses, which she swapped with Aalap during the ritual to signify their acceptance of each other as husband and wife. The three-day wedding celebration was beautifully photographed by R.A.G. Artistry.

What made your wedding special for you? We were in the company of our friends and family! It was wonderful to see all our loved ones in one place to celebrate with us. Many wedding guests had traveled a long way to attend and that is one of my sweetest memories. Our ceremony was very personal and meaningful, for example, we picked music that was special to us, and we washed each other’s feet, a Biblical tradition that represents submission and serving one another as Christ did with his disciples. The cake knives were from my parent’s wedding. The table cloths from my late grandmother. Jamie presented David, her parents, and his parents with embroidered handkerchiefs for the occasion. The couple rode up to the reception on an old John Deere tractor.

SPIRITUAL PATHWAYS

The Grace of Giving

R

Rick Warren tells of the father who took his young son to a fast food restaurant to get the boy an order of French fries. They sat down at a table, and as the father watched his son eating he instinctively reached over to get one to eat. His son slapped his hand and said, “Dad, you can’t have one. These aren’t your fries!” Three things immediately went through the mind of the father. One, my son had forgotten that I was the source of his fries. I brought him to the restaurant, walked up to the counter, placed the order, and paid for the French fries with my own money. Second, my son had forgotten that I control the fries. I could take them away from him and say, “That’s it! No more fries for you!” Or I could buy him a truck load of fries; I could bury him in fries if I wanted to. And third, I didn’t really need his fries. I could buy my own just by walking back up to the counter and putting down a few quarters. Then the father said, “What I really wanted was for my son to learn to be unselfish.” Did you know that generosity is the most talked about virtue in the entire Bible? Someone has counted the biblical references to virtues. The word faith or its variations is used 246 times. Hope is used 185 times. Love 733 times. But generous giving is used 2,285 times in the Bible. God really wants us to be generous. And we are to be generous not just to help others; we, ourselves, are blessed when we develop generosity. The noted psychiatrist, Karl Menninger, says that generous people are rarely mentally ill. Whatever it is that makes us generous must be an antidote for mental illness. I’m still in the process of developing a generous spirit, but already I’ve been able to see the benefits. For one thing, generosity breaks the grip of materialism. Our society is extremely materialistic. It’s so easy to fall into the spirit of our times which says the answer to happiness is get, get, get! But I discovered that the more I got the

Bill Perry grew up in Live Oak, Florida, a small town just south of Valdosta, GA. After graduating from Stetson University, he earned three degrees from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. In 2004, he retired as pastor of First Baptist Church of Statesboro after serving that congregation for 22 years. He and his wife, Margaret, registrar of Statesboro High School before her retirement in 2005, have two daughters, five grandsons, and one granddaughter. Bill has been very much involved in community life in Statesboro. He is an avid reader and has been a runner since 1973.

more I wanted. Life can become a quest to get more and more money and the things money can buy. And as I bought into that rat-race I could never get enough. It was only when I began to practice the principles my Mother taught me that I began to get a handle on this endless quest. I found that as I gave to others I was not so driven to get more and more for myself. And now through becoming generous in my giving I’m developing wonderful peace and joy. It feels good to give. The One Who is My Master said there is more joy in giving than in receiving. I didn’t always believe that. Now I do. One of my greatest joys comes from giving to family members, friends, my church, and even strangers. I began to notice how giving brought me joy back in college days when Margaret and I fell in love. It took nearly every penny I earned to pay my college bills, but when I had a little bit of money left I liked to buy gifts for Margaret. The smile on her face meant everything to me! As time went by I began to feel joy even when I couldn’t see the reactions of those who were the recipients. Just the giving itself brings joy. It may be that one of the reasons generous giving brings joy is because for those who love God giving is an investment for eternity. If your possessions are used primarily to purchase items for yourself, when you die you leave it all behind. But if you make sacrifices and give to others, to your church, or to other causes that help those who have so little, it’s like sending gifts to eternity ahead of yourself. I don’t understand all that means, but I believe it. Years ago I heard the story of the government agent who was sent way back into the mountains of Appalachia to check on the conditions of the people there. It seemed that most all of them were living in poverty. He stopped at one shack where he saw a poorly clad woman working in her garden. He asked her, “What would you do if the government gave you a hundred dollars?” She thought a minute and said, “I guess I would give it to the poor, as far as it would go.” Wow! She puts me to shame. THE VIEW FROM HERE

“I’m A Teacher!”

M

My Dear CC, It seems just yesterday you were about a year old and we were playing Patty Cake and you were chewing on your “pacifier.” The sparkle of baby teeth as you laughed showed us that indeed you were going to enjoy life! Now, into your twenty-second year, all those who have been blessed by your warm and loving personality will confirm what your Big Daddy saw in those very early days. Your life has been a String of Pearls, as you spread joy and caring, walking those corridors of K through 12. I cannot remember when you made your initial but passionate alert of “I going to be a teacher!” I thought of those moments while watching you cross the stage during Georgia Southern University’s 2014 December commencement. An honor graduate celebrating the nearing of your dream to teach, as did your Mamoo and Mom a total of sixty years combined. That heritage will innately guide you as you begin unveiling the mysteries of the alphabet. Making certain they stay within the lines as you introduce the formation of art. You will be their enabler of social skills by reminding them to reply “Yes Ma’am,” raising hands to ask a question, and, by all means, “we do not break in line during our joy at lunchtime.” Further, they will be led by the way you live front and center, as you guide them into that mental process which will go on forever. CC, your choice to be a teacher will provide you a quality of life like none other. You have already seen this blessing in action as former students of Mom and Mamoo return to say, “Thanks. The lessons you gave me have never gone away. As I grew, I remembered your encouragement to do my best. To live up to my potential. To grow into making a difference!”

Ric Mandes, a popular essayist, retired after 27 years as Director of Public Relations and Development for Georgia Southern. His memories about growing up and living in South Georgia inspire his writings. He’s a published author and former newspaper columnist for the AJC.

Oh, yes, my CC, they will return as adults with families! Some of them will be practicing medicine, law; some will lift jet liners into the sky; some will become stay-at-home Moms. Others will be staff members supporting a cadre of high-end business. And true to life, there will be the news of those who listened to your parables but released them along the way. These results bring unhappy news of heartache. It’s a fact, CC. and I would be short sighted not to include this listing! As a teacher all you can do is provide the guide to a good and productive life. And on many afternoons as you drive home, faces of certain students will come to mind, and you will offer an anthem of hope for them. You know this without my caution; your salary forever will be weak, slim, and paltry. There is just nothing we as educators can do about this, my sweet granddaughter. It has been going on forever. And until American citizens have a deep and abiding altar call, your reward will remain the visits of former students thanking you for taking them by the hand and saying “girls and boys this is life!” That is why teaching is a “calling!” So, CC, continue embracing the moment and give it all you’ve got as you did when you decided to cheer for Southern your freshmen year, as you did in being elected Rush Facilitator your Senior year for Phi Mu, as you did in studying deep and strong, thus graduating with honors. And last but not least, entering Cheer South in the eighth grade and being guided by Keyshia into a team member who became airborne. It all fits. The choices you made along the way. Now, be excited to note somewhere in this Southern Land, new born babies will soon be sitting in front of you waiting… Love you, BIG DADDY March/April 2015 • 65
