All of a sudden, it seems like everybody’s wearing a Fitbit® fitness tracker. We’re not just keeping count of our steps, we’re watching our heart rate, our caloric intake, our sleep, all while watching our weight. Staying healthy is a really good thing! And, while you are focusing on you, Statesboro Magazine is focusing on area healthcare providers for you. In the Providers Spotlight, we shine the light on a special section of outstanding professionals dedicated to providing the best healthcare services in the area. This issue also provides a look at all the established physicians and the new ones arriving this year in the official East Georgia Regional Medical Center 2017 Physicians Guide. Inside there’s an in depth look at the Technical College System of Georgia’s Instructor of the Year Jan Martin, head of the Radiologic Technology Program for the college. Martin has spent over 20 years training “Rad Tech” students; some of whom have gone on to gain top state honors as GOAL winners. Next we talked to Ralph Cowart and Alan Skipper of Southern Manor Retirement Inn to find out their secret to keeping senior residents engaged and happy. Their success can be measured in the long waiting list of residents who want to call Southern Manor home. And don’t miss our “Summer Fun” section, a feature devoted to keeping the kiddies entertained throughout the long hot months ahead. Keep this magazine on the nightstand next to your Fitbit® as a reference guide to the superior healthcare professionals who serve the Statesboro area, or visit www.statesboromagazine.com throughout the year to reference the digital guide.

ADVANCING TELEMEDICINE

Georgia Southern is committed to improving healthcare access for all our state’s rural and under-served communities. More than two-thirds of Georgia’s 159 counties are considered rural. Advances in “telehealth” — visiting with an offsite healthcare provider through video — is a crucial part of that effort. It’s all about serving the patient and quality care.

Ogeechee Technical College is known for training a distinguished workforce for the healthcare industry in the region. But, there is one program at the college whose graduates exceed the industry’s standard year after year. The Radiologic Technology Program, led by director and instructor Jan Martin, produces exceptional medical professionals, many of whom go on to win distinction in the healthcare field and as outstanding student leaders on the state level and beyond. The program’s unusual amount of success can be attributed to Martin’s vision of how a radiographer should be trained to properly perform his or her job. “I’m old school,” said Martin. “I want my students to have respect for their fellow classmates, the instructors, and our program.” To Martin, teaching the students technical skills isn’t enough. “I want our students to be prepared to work anywhere. When they leave here, they will go to work in doctor’s offices, hospitals, and imaging centers. Some cross train in CAT scan, mammography, MRI and cardio imaging. Some come back to do stenography. Each modality in which they become certified makes them more marketable,” she said. The program is structured to be completed in 17 months, within four semesters after the General Education Core is completed. Each fall courses are taught including instruction in anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and radiographic science, equipment and imaging, with over 20 hours spent in the field working in a non-paid position at one of 13 clinical sites. 77 hours of instruction are required to complete the program. A 150 sq. ft. classroom with adjoining lab space contains the latest in radiologic equipment and serves 13 students enrolled in the program each term. Films are developed in a dark room and assessed on a lighted board. Two medical simulation dummies, complete with broken bones, serve as patients for the students. The GE® x-ray equipment has the capability of converting to digital images as well. May/June 2017 • 13

During clinical rotations, Martin requires her students to wear white uniforms, a standard that may seem old fashioned in today’s healthcare environments, but which Martin feels sets her students apart. “When a doctor sees a student in white at our clinical sites, he or she knows that student is from OTC and is well trained not only in procedures, but also work ethic and professionalism,” said Martin. Matt Dunn serves as clinical coordinator for the program, in addition to being an instructor, Dunn oversees the students on clinical rounds. That’s the position Martin held when she started at OTC in 1997. “I couldn’t do it without Matt,” said Martin. “He was in the first class I taught here. He worked at the old Bulloch Memorial Hospital and got his bachelors and masters while here. We’ve known each other a long time and we work very well together.” The program falls under Dean for Academic Affairs Kelly Kingry and Executive V.P. for Academic Affairs Dr. Charlene Lamar. “We also couldn’t do it without the

support of our administrators. They are behind us 100%,” said Martin. “They allow us the autonomy to do our jobs and the backing we need to make our program and our students excel.” Since 2004, OTC’s Rad Tech graduates have a 100% pass rate on the national ARRT radiography exam. “There is an incentive for passing the national test,” said Martin. “If students pass the ARRT exams, they don’t have to take my final.” OTC’s Director of Admissions, Molly Bickerton, a Rad Tech alumni, was the 2008 Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership state winner from the program. Our students are exceptional because they are committed concrete sequential people.” The Rad Tech Program is nationally certified by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). “The first JRCERT accreditation we received since I became program director was in 2012,” said Martin. “It is a full eight-year accreditation. We submitted a four-year report last year and I was recently notified that the program could continue its eight-year accreditation until 2020.” Accreditation is important to the program and to Martin, who feels more certification and training would benefit healthcare overall. “It’s important to all of us, and we want people to know that the state of Georgia does not require licensing or certification for x-ray technicians in Urgent Care, Chiropractic offices, or in surgery centers. We are one of only seven states that do not require some type of advanced education certification,” said Martin. “I believe as a paying patient you should ask if the x-rays are being done by an ARRT certified radiographer. Supporting Patients, Families & Our Community Monthly Grief Support for Widows and Widowers Community Grief Support Service for Parents and Families with Infant and Fetal Loss Educational Programs for Healthcare Professionals, Caregivers, Families and Community Members Camp Lily Welle Bereavement Camp for Children Bi-Annual Memorial Services for Families, Friends and Loved Ones Community Based, Community Funded, Community Supported

We want to thank our community for its support over the years. Founded in 1994, we are the only hospice agency in Bulloch county and surrounding areas that is a not-for-profit service. This means that any funding or support received goes back into our patient care and for community support. We have an amazing staff who are experts in their fields of hospice and palliative care. Our Board is all voluntary, all dedicated to the mission of Ogeechee Area Hospice – providing expert comfort and bereavement support to persons affected by a lifethreatening illness and/or grief. We provide services to patients and families wherever they call home. Most of our patients live in their own homes, but some live in long-term care facilities, assisted living homes, and in our own residential center. We also have a state-of-the-art inpatient hospice facility, providing acute symptom management for problems that can’t be managed in the home. We will soon be conducting our annual Sustaining Our Future campaign. This is your opportunity to invest in the care of terminally ill individuals who live in this community. Ogeechee Area Hospice is your hospice. Please partner with us and help ensure exceptional hospice care in our community for years to come. When exploring hospice care for yourself or a loved one, remember you do have a choice. Ask for Ogeechee Are Hospice by name. Sincerely, Linda Upchurch, DNP,ANP-BC Executive Director Ogeechee Area Hospice

SERVICES

B

uilt in July 2000, East Georgia Regional Medical Center is a four-level, 149 bed acute care hospital featuring a Women’s Pavilion and an adjacent medical office building. The hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, a distinction awarded only to those healthcare facilities that maintain the highest standards of quality. East Georgia Regional Medical Center’s healthcare team consists of over 800 employees and nearly 100 physicians representing a wide range of specialties. The ongoing expansion of medical services and professionals, along with a major investment in technology, has firmly established East Georgia Regional‘s reputation for providing a higher medical standard. East Georgia Regional Medical Center offers a 24-hour physician-staffed emergency department, a Level II neonatal center, outpatient services including endoscopy, same day surgery and ambulatory care, a pain management center, a wound care clinic, a cardiac catheterization lab, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, and state-of-the-art diagnostic procedures including digital mammography, MRI, CT, PET/CT, nuclear medicine and interventional radiology. The Women’s Pavilion provides dedicated services to women of all ages, and includes eight labor, delivery and recovery suites. An Interventional Cardiology service was started in April 2010. This expansion of our cardiology program has allowed patients needing angioplasty and/or stent placement to receive these services without leaving Statesboro. Electrophysiology services were added to the cardiology program in August 2011. The addition of these services has dramatically increased the quality of care in our community. In October 2010, East Georgia Regional became one of only four hospitals in Southeast Georgia capable of performing robotic surgery. This highly specialized surgical tool allows surgeons to perform procedures that are less invasive and require less recovery time. As the summer approaches, many teenagers and young adults utilize their break from school to schedule a suitable time to have their wisdom teeth evaluated. Studies show that 90% of patients will have a wisdom tooth removed in their lifetime. Wisdom teeth do not require removal if they are able to grow into one’s mouth completely and functionally, and are painless, cavity-free, disease-free, and surrounded by healthy gum tissue. Often, this is not the case and wisdom teeth are unable to completely break through the gum tissue. These types of teeth are classified as “impacted” and they are prone to disease even if one experiences no pain or symptoms. Wisdom teeth can lead to spontaneous pain, gum disease, damage to neighboring teeth, formation of aggressive cysts or tumors, and serious or potential life-threatening infections. Wisdom teeth are typically removed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Surgery involves low risks, and complications are minimized when surgery is performed between the ages of 15-25 years. At East Georgia Center for Oral and Facial Surgery, Dr. Rodrigo Uribe, Dr. Mark Clayton and Dr. Suketu Patel are board certified surgeons who specialize in wisdom teeth extraction and the administration of intravenous sedation to help make your experience safe and comfortable. The Neurological Center of East Georgia, P.C. On rare occasions I will see an older male patient who will proudly declare to me that he has never had a headache in his whole life. At that point I congratulate the man because he and I both know how lucky he is. He knows it from a lifetime of hearing about the headache misery of others, and I know it because treating headaches is what I do several hours a week. On a statistical level it can be noted that 45 million people suffer from chronic headaches. That number surpasses the 33 million people combined who suffer from asthma, heart disease, and diabetes. It is also known that many, if not all of the chronic headache sufferers are experiencing some level of disability in their lives due to headaches. The disability comes in many forms such as time lost from work, time lost with the children, and recreational time lost. In the field of neurology we have made many advances in the diagnosis and treatment of headaches. This means that help is now available for all headache sufferers and what was once a hopeless situation for many can now become a cure. This is possible because of the collaborative efforts of hundreds of research and clinical neurologists over the last several years. In addition, there have been great strides in discovering and applying successful treatments including lifestyle Michael Taormina, M.D. Board Certified in Neurology, interventions, natural health products, or prescription mediSubspecialty Certified in Headache Medicine, Neurocritical Care and Behavioral Neurology cation. There’s something exceptional about two of Statesboro’s senior living communities, Southern Manor Retirement Inn and the Gardens at Southern Manor (formerly Gentilly Gardens). Inside each residential facility, there’s an atmosphere of hopefulness and well-being not commonly associated with long term care facilities. The difference comes from the efforts of local owners Ralph Cowart and Alan Skipper, who together are creating a hospitality oriented brand of senior assisted living that keeps the residents engaged in life. “We feel that seniors are our forgotten treasure,” said Cowart. “Alan and I have always enjoyed working with them because of our upbringing.” Both Skipper and Cowart spent a large part of their childhoods with their grandparents. At a very young age, Cowart moved in with his grandparents and remained there for most of his youth. “I was raised by my grandparents,” said Cowart. “I spent the day with my grandmother and my great aunt. All I knew growing up was little old ladies.” Reared by a single mother, Skipper remembers staying with his grandparents often, too. Because of these family experiences, the two share a strong commitment for making life more enjoyable for the seniors living in their care. But, the two didn’t actually meet until both were adults working in the industry. Cowart attended public schools in Emanuel County and graduated from Swainsboro High School in 2004. He graduated from Ogeechee Technical College’s funeral service program and attended the University of Georgia before joining his family’s business, Johnson Funeral Homes. After a few years, Cowart decided the funeral business wasn’t for him and pursued a career in Long Term Care and Rehabilitation Care Administration. He served as the director of business development for Gentiva Hospice, where he met Skipper, who at the time was serving as regional clinical director. Skipper grew up in Effingham County and obtained an Associate’s Degree in Nursing from the College of Coastal Georgia. He pursued his RN at Georgia Southern graduating in 2008. Skipper went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Nursing with a focus on adult health, with a concentration in geriatrics from Valdosta State University in 2012. He attended the University of Massachusetts, Boston, to obtain certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner. Skipper is currently enrolled in the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, working toward a Doctorate of Nursing Practice Degree. He graduates in August 2017. His dissertation focuses on dementia and depression in the elderly and how they coexist. While Cowart and Skipper were working at Gentiva, it was determined that Cowart’s grandmother could no longer care for herself on her own. She needed to move to an assisted living May/June 2017 • 59

facility. Cowart chose Statesboro’s Southern Manor, then owned by Kay Wilds, as a good location because his job as director of business development for Gentiva meant a lot of travel west of I-95. “I chose Southern Manor because if felt more like home,” said Cowart. “After one week of Grandmother living there, Kay offered to sell to us and we decided to buy.” In 2011, Skipper and Cowart became the owners of Southern Manor. They expanded with the purchase of Lakeview Manor Community in Springfield in 2015, the same year they started Southern Manor Companion Care, an in-home assisted living service. In 2016, they purchased Gentilly Gardens renaming it The Gardens at Southern Manor, located on Gentilly Road in Statesboro. “We find it helpful to provide a more humane and personalized setting for seniors who need some assistance with daily living, but who will thrive in a setting with proper medication management, nutritious meals, and carefully structured social activities,” said Skipper. “We decided early on to treat every resident as if he or she was our grandparent,” said Cowart “We never have to worry as long as our residents are treated well.” At the Inns residents are treated to a slate of activities from which to choose. There are ani-

mal therapy sessions with turtles, birds, cats, dogs and bunnies. Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday are “Dinner and a Movie” nights. A visiting artist provides art therapy twice a month. Every Sunday at 4:00 p.m., Deacon Ed Boulineau from Statesboro’s Primitive Baptist Church holds a service for the residents. On Mondays, for the past 25 years, ladies from the church entertain with singing. On Tuesdays, Donna Brigman entertains on the piano after lunch, and residents also participate in the Silver Lining Club on Saturdays at the First Presbyterian Church. There are craft activities, games, and Bible studies led by Pastor Sam of St. Pauls Lutheran Church. Resident’s rooms contain furnishings from home and amenities include fresh towels and trash changes daily. There are no “level of care” fees; all residents receive the same. A dedicated bath person assists residents in their private baths, and all amenities are included in the cost of care. Instead of vans, residents are transported to doctor appointments and on outings in the company’s chauffeured limousine. “We laugh and say, ‘We offer everything from bunnies to bingo,’” said Cowart. “We are diligent about keeping our residents active,” said Skipper. The residents are given opportunities to

remain active and engaged, both within the facilities and outside in the community. Residents are treated to excursions to the Averitt Center for the Arts; trips to the beach on Tybee Island; a visit to Roosevelt’s Little White House – “If they come up with a place they’d like to visit, we will try to take them,” said Cowart. Earlier this year, residents of the two Statesboro facilities came together to form a Golden K Kiwanis Club. Jean Braswell serves as president of 20+ members and the meetings rotate between Southern Manor and The Gardens. Residents have put together “thank-you” gift bags for the public safety community, and supported Statesboro in the America’s Best Communities competition by wearing blue and cheering the team on video. Keeping the residents active and engaged is part of creating a positive atmosphere, the other part is a committed ownership and staff. “We work with a great group of people who feel as we do – that working with the senior population is a calling,” said Skipper. Our resident to staff ratio is the best in town,” said Skipper. “We have 11 people during the day, that’s one staff person for every four residents.” “We started with 36 beds. We now have three buildings, 108 residents and 30 people on home care,” said Cowart. For the future, the partners may be looking at acquiring more facilities. “Our greatest challenge is meeting the demand,” said Skipper. “We just want to help everybody. If we had 40 more rooms, we could fill them.” “We have really enjoyed the support and trust of the community,” said Cowart. “People in Statesboro have been really good to us. The future of medicine is here in telehealth I remember being amazed when I made my first video call on my cell phone. I told my friend on the other end of the line, “This is Star Trek! We are living in Star Trek right now!” And while I have yet to “set my phasers to stun,” video communication technology — sometimes called “telepresence” — has certainly given us new ways to connect. The applications of this technology are endless, but one of the most impactful uses of telepresence is in health care, especially with the advent of “telehealth:” visiting with an off-site health care provider through video. According to Melissa Garno, Ed.D., RN, director of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at Georgia Southern, it’s a technology that might seem like science fiction to some, but is already a reality. “It’s the future and it’s here, but it’s not that widely used yet, and many people just haven’t had experience with it,” she said. “It is a way

to improve access to care really for people anywhere, but especially in rural areas. That’s why we’re so interested in incorporating it into our curriculum.” In Georgia, 109 of its 159 counties are rural, and many don’t have a local hospital or specialists to handle a wide range of health issues. In addition, many rural residents have transportation or financial issues that keep them from regular care. To respond to the need, Georgia has created the Georgia Partnership for Telehealth, a network of health care practitioners ready to consult with patients across the state. Patients can visit a local “presenter” site, which can be a doctor’s office or even a local pharmacy, where an on-site nurse or other persons trained to use the technology can perform assessments which they can then relay to a specialist or physician off-site through telepresence. “If you need a specialist, they can transfer you to a specialist immediately,” said Garno.

Imagine being at your local clinic for a routine checkup, and the nurse finds a mole or a spot she’s unsure about. She can “dial in” a dermatologist through the telehealth network, and that specialist can do a consult from wherever they are. The same is true for cardiologists, nephrologists and other specialists, who can then refer you to the closest hospital or give you a clean bill of health, saving you the time and money it would take to schedule an appointment and travel to their office. Charles Owens, clinical associate professor in the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health, says that while the technology is revolutionary and will be a great help to patients and providers, people sometimes resist as it lies outside their comfort zone. “The biggest obstacle is overcoming the belief that for a medical visit, someone must be able to touch me,” he said. “But in reality, when you visit a patient through telehealth, and you put the otoscope or ophthalmoscope onto the person, you actually can get a clearer, better, sharper image then you can see with the human eye.” Owens says the benefits of telehealth largely outweigh the personal obstacles. For the patient, it means better access to specialists; better access to mental health in the state of Georgia, which is a mental health professional shortage area; and lower health care costs. For the provider, it means lower overhead costs for a medical practice, and for rural counties it means not having to compete with larger cities for specialists, and keeping health care local, which is better for the patient. “Keeping those patients local supports the local providers — whether it’s the physician, the hospital, rural health clinic, private practice or EMS,” said Owens. “When you can keep that patient local, you can keep those health care dollars local. That’s how we create a sustainable health care system for our community.” Garno and Owens say it’s only a matter of time before telehealth is everywhere, and Georgia Southern is already looking at where it can get more of this technology into its health curriculum and programs. And while the technology is certainly taking us into realms previously reserved for science fiction, at the end of the day, it’s all about the patient and quality care. “If we make health care convenient, if we make telehealth an option for people, then they will choose the least costly method to control their costs, and will learn that the quality of care and their outcomes are as good or better than face-to-face visits with medical providers,” said Owens. The Spiritual Pathway s Rev. Dr. H. William Perry

A Don’t Ass-u-me! A tough-minded CEO saw a young man lounging against a filing cabinet and gruffly asked him, “How much are you paid?” “About $150 a week,” the young man replied. “Here’s two week’s pay. Get out of here, and don’t ever come back,” said the angry CEO. As the young man left the CEO asked, “Who hired that loafer?” One of the ladies nearby said, “We didn’t hire him. He’s here from the messenger service to pick up a package.” It’s so easy to make false assumptions. Sometimes they are of little consequence. When Tom Burns went on his first cruise he was assigned to sit at a dining table with a Frenchman. At each meal the Frenchman would say, “Bon appetit,” and the American would respond, “Tom Burns.” This went on day after day. Toward the last of the week, the American’s brother-in-law overheard the brief exchange of words, and said, “You idiot! He’s not giving you his name. Bon appetit is French for good appetite.” So at the next meal Tom was ready. “Bon appetit,” he said. The Frenchman smiled and replied, “Tom Burns.” The consequences of that false assumption were minimal, perhaps only a slight embarrassment. But sometimes wrong assumptions cause great damage. The Roman aristocrats assumed cooking

with lead pots was far superior to using the clay ones as the peasants did, and didn’t connect their short life spans to the lead in the pots. The captain and crew of the Titanic assumed their ship’s reputation of being unsinkable was true, and took chances that would not normally have been taken in the icy North Atlantic. The people in charge assumed the floodwalls surrounding New Orleans would keep Katrina’s waters at bay. Many of the church people in Germany assumed that since Adolph Hitler neither smoked nor drank alcohol, he was a moral man who could be trusted. The keepers of the castle assumed that the little girl crying at the moat was lost, frightened, and hungry, so they lowered the drawbridge only to be overrun by the hiding Mongols from the north. The lady assumed the footsteps in the hallway late at night were those of an intruder, so she eased out of her bedroom with pistol in hand and shot her teenage son who had come in later than usual. A man was driving up a mountain road, going around those hairpin curves, when he met a convertible barreling down toward him. The woman driver looked over at him and yelled, “Pig!” The man yelled back, “Sow!” Then as he took the next curve he hit a large pig in the middle of the road. False assumption.

I had an experience as a high school student that has helped me to be careful about the assumptions I make. I was attending a youth conference in Florida at Stetson University, and a young man I had never met was assigned to be my dorm roommate. I didn’t see much of him because he was a part of a large youth group from South Florida, and he hung out with them. On the second night of the conference I was in line for the evening meal when my roommate came walking in with my new shirt on, a special red and white shirt I had purchased just before leaving home. I planned to wear it the last night of the assembly to leave a lasting impression on any new friends I might have made. But here was this joker in my shirt! And the guys in his group were teasing him about it. I stood there in disbelief! How could he do such a thing? I was about to confront him, but somehow I didn’t, maybe because he was bigger than I, and if he responded with fists I wouldn’t have stood a chance. I left the dinner line, moped back to the dorm, walked into the closet, and there was my shirt! Hanging right where I had left it! With a sigh of relief I thought about what would have happened if I had acted on my assumption. I would have been what the first three letters in that word imply. May/June 2017 • 69

The View From Here s Ric Mandes

I

In the Beginning I have lived a life that was full at each and every turn because of the influence of three role models. Life for Ric Mandes was a duet of challenge and change. Each of those individuals led and blessed me as they took time to pull back their canvas and speak to me as to what their portrait reflected. Granny! I was nine that chilly morning I stepped off the Silver Meteor at the small depot, Thalmann, Georgia. And for the next ten years this Virginia farm girl at the ripened age of sixty, taught the difference between a house and a home. She spared no words in declaring a home as “where Jesus lives. Where blessings were said before every meal. And every night a verse or two were read from The Good Book before bedtime. Further, she taught me to “stand up for Jesus” no matter where an opportunity came my way. Let it not go unsaid, Granny explained to me what citizenship

meant as a member of her home. Every Saturday morning started with “Wash Day.” The change of sheets and pillowcases, undies, jeans, socks followed by “hanging out the wash” on a mile of clothesline. By noon. Granny’s backyard reminded me of an Armada of ships long ago, at port and all one could see were their massive sails filling the air. That night as I lay in my bed waiting for sleep, I could smell the sunshine. Inside jobs – no dirty clothes left on the floor. Be certain the basin was clean after I brushed my teeth. Same for taking a bath. Make certain it sparkled just as I found it. Keeping the front yard well trimmed. Cleaning out the grease trap once a month. And when she called out my name while Jennings and I huddled in the sanctuary of the woods, my name was called but once. Helping Granny clean the dishes after meals. I would wash and listened to her humming JUST AS I AM or BLESSED ASSURANCE.

This was my life for ten years coming to a close when I received my draft notice. I would be gone from my Granny’s cottage twenty four months. I was trained to take up arms at Fort Bliss, Texas. Two weeks before we were to ship out, the North Koreans agreed to the Armistice. And I was assigned duties in Germany and France as both countries were still occupied by the United States. Uncle Bradley My Uncle Bradley stood tall in my eyes. A country boy from Calhoun who was working for the J. A. Jones Construction Company in building the Maritime Shipyard. That is where he met my Aunt Minnie and fell in love. He later became head electrician for the Brunswick Paper Mill. Uncle Bradley’s first love right behind Aunt Minnie was gardening. He loved to garden year round. Many a Saturday afternoon I would ride my bike to where he and Aunt Minnie lived. And there I would follow him around the garden as he hoed out weeds or planted seeds. And he always whistled filling this piece of earth with beautiful melodies. He as a man of dignity. A straight shooter. And during those summer visits, I know I must have asked him a million questions. Often a question emitted a laugh in response. But he always answered. It was really neat as I look back on it, when he walked to the back kitchen window said to Aunt Minnie, “Honey, I reckon me and Rickie would enjoy a glass of iced tea.” And we did. Now in my recall at age eighty-three, those garden path trails of Uncle Bradley’s come alive. This garden gave me the chance to see real love in action when he would give Aunt Minnie a sweaty kiss on the cheek, thanking her. Uncle Bill Uncle Bill walked with a limp. I never asked why. He was married to my Aunt Peg. Made a living scrimping. On the weekends Uncle Bill was a shade tree mechanic. Often I would walk over in the evening, kneel down and asked Uncle Bill, “What is that thing? Where does that go?” On and on. He was a quiet man, my Uncle Bill. He is my final role model. He taught me, “Not to hurry. Not to rush.” “Rickie if you go through life as fast as you can go, you will for certain miss something important.” The thrill of being Uncle Bill’s friend was, now and then on a Sunday afternoon, he would pull anchor and take us for a ride to the ocean’s edge. And then he would shut down the motors and would say, “You children be real quiet.” Floating on the sea, I can remember to this day the presence of God. Where was my father all this time? TRANSITIONS

Transitions take place all life through, Some slowly, some quickly, as when A marriage begins or a baby is born, Or, sadly, when we lose a dear friend. Transitions often bring challenge, Either by size or scope. We welcome some with gratitude; With others, we learn to cope. - Libba Smith \ Mr. Wendell Reece Altmiller
