Is it time for you to have a mammogram? For women of average risk, the American College of Radiology recommends annual mammograms starting at age 40, with no upper age limit as long as the woman is in good health.* A screening mammogram can help detect breast cancer in its earliest and most treatable stages. Statesboro Imaging Center offers 3D mammography services, which provide clearer images and faster results.** Schedule your mammogram today.
*For American College of Radiology recommendations, visit www.acr.org. **Comparative data using 3D and 2D mammography to detect invasive cancer, BreastCancer.org, June 2016. Appointments are on a first-come, first-served basis. An order from a physician or qualified healthcare provider is not required, but the patient must provide a physician/provider name when an appointment is made. If the patient does not have a physician/provider, a list will be provided for selection. All mammogram reports will be sent to the physican/provider, and the patient is responsible for follow-up. *Check with your insurance provider to confirm coverage for a screening mammogram. East Georgia Regional Medical Center is owned in part by physicians.
FROM THE EDITOR
W
We’re very fortunate in Bulloch County, while other rural areas across the state are losing local hospitals to closures, we have East Georgia Regional Medical Center with over 600 employees and over 95 physicians representing a wide range of specialties to serve our area. EGRMC has 149 private patient rooms with full baths, telephones, television and Wi-Fi access. Plus a Women’s Pavilion dedicated to the unique health concerns of women, offering a full range of services, education opportunities and maternity care. In this issue we highlight the doctors of EGRMC in the official 2018 Physicians Guide. You’ll find information on each physician and their specialties beginning on page 35. We’re also featuring another area provider of multiple wellness services, Optim Healthcare. The physicians of Optim and their partner National Surgical Healthcare, have joined together to provide primary healthcare at two 25-bed local hospitals in Sylvania and Millen. In addition, the 55+ doctors at Optim operate eight neurosurgery centers, seven outpatient physical therapy clinics, two imaging centers and eight rural health clinics. Optim has health services in 48 locations in southeast Georgia and a practice in Bluffton, S.C. They recently expanded services by opening a pain management clinic under Dr. Greg Spellman in the Cotton Ridge Plaza on Fair Road here in Statesboro. In two separate articles, we explore the many facets of healthcare that Optim offers the region. We also talked to William “Bill” Mase, Dr. P. H., of the Jiann Ping Hsu College of Public Health at Georgia Southern. Dr. Mase gives us an inside look at some of the important research being done on rural hospital closings, health profession shortages and what is being done to survey and address these crises in healthcare in our state. Don’t miss our annual “Summer Fun” section, a feature devoted to filling those lazy hot days with plenty to do in and around Statesboro. Full of camps for children, you’ll find something entertaining and educational to keep them busy during the summer break. Keep this magazine on hand as a reference guide to the superior healthcare professionals who serve the Statesboro area, or visit www.statesboromagazine.com throughout the year to reference the digital magazine. Enjoy!

Brooklet & Nevils Named Among Georgia’s Top Schools
Shown at the Groundbreaking (L-R): Ann Martin, Kristen Thompson, Paula Dailey, Chris O’Malley, Liam Hammond, filling in for his father, Dr. Jeremy Hammond, Dr. Suketu Patel, Brian Kent – with DAK Builders, Trish Tootle, VP of Farmers & Merchants Bank, and current Chair of the Statesboro/Bulloch County Chamber of Commerce.
East Georgia Center for Oral & Facial Surgery Holds Groundbreaking on New Facility A groundbreaking ceremony was held in April for new facilities for East Georgia Center for Oral and Facial Surgery at 1222 Brampton Avenue in the Market District of Statesboro. Currently at 613 East Grady Street, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons Suketu J. Patel, DMD, MD, and Richard J. Hammond, DMD, practice a full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery with expertise ranging from corrective jaw surgery to wisdom tooth removal. They diagnose and treat facial pain, facial injuries and TMJ disorders, and perform a full range of dental implant and bone grafting procedures. The new offices were designed by Frank D’Arcangelo with DPR Architecture of Statesboro. The doctors expect to be in the new building in ten to twelve months.
Brooklet Elementary School and Nevils Elementary School have both achieved Title I Reward School – Highest Performance status for 2018. These schools are among the top-five percent of Georgia’s Title I schools for student achievement. This is the sixth year in a row that BES has received the distinction, and NES rose from Highest Progress recognition in 2017, to now be among the state’s highest performing. The Georgia Department of Education’s Academic Achievement Awards Program honors and rewards K-12 Title I schools and school districts for significant progress in improving student achievement and making significant progress in closing achievement gaps. Title I Reward Schools are identified annually by the state. They are schools with the highest absolute performance over three years for the All Students Group in terms of proficiency on statewide assessments. Calculations for this most recent designation were from FY ’15, ’16, and ’17.
Local Convention & Visitors Bureau Wins State Honor The Statesboro Convention and Visitors Bureau was named the 2018 Regional Visitor Information Center of the Year in April during the Regional Visitor Information Center (RVIC) Conference held in Statesboro. Statesboro’s Visitors Center is one of 65 official visitors centers in the state. SCVB Executive Director Becky Davis and Marketing Manager Justin Samples, learned last year that Statesboro was chosen as this year’s host city and have been preparing for the conference for months. According to Nija Vereen-Torrence, operations manager/RVIC coordinator with the Georgia Department of Economic Development, this is the first time ever the host community has won the Pictured (L-R): Kevin Langston - Deputy Commissioner of Tourism, Visitors Information Center of the Year award. She said, however, that Statesboro was Bert Brantley - Chief Operating Officer Georgia Department of Economic Development, Barry Turner - SCVB Board of Directors the obvious winner when points were tallied from a matrix of categories used to judge President, Justin Samples - SCVB Marketing Manager, Becky Davis nominated centers across the state. - SCVB Executive Director, Pat Wilson – Commissioner, Georgia “We are so excited and honored to have our center win this award and we are espe- Department of Economic Development. cially proud of Becky and Justin and all the work they do to showcase Statesboro and Bulloch County on a daily basis,” said Barry Turner, president of the SCVB board of directors. “We could not ask for a better team. They deserve all the accolades for the success of the Statesboro Center.” The 2018 Regional Visitor Information Center Conference helped showcase all the great reasons Statesboro and Bulloch County are not only great places to live, but fantastic places to visit as well. With great cooperation from community partners, Davis and Samples provided what many of the attendees from all over Georgia called, “the best RVIC Conference we’ve ever attended!” 10 • Statesboro Magazine

Portal wins State FFA Career Development Event
Nursery-Landscape Team wins first state title; Advances to Nationals Portal Middle High School’s FFA Nursery-Landscape Team won the State title for their Career Development Event (CDE) on March 24, at the University of Georgia in Athens. Team members Amonica Kirkland, Cayla Morris, Caree McGahee, and Heidi Sawyer advanced to state competition after winning the Area 4 event in Swainsboro, on Feb. 27. The team will now travel to Indianapolis in October to compete in the national Nursery-Landscape CDE held during the National FFA Convention. “They’ve worked hard for months,” said Dr. Tom Marshall, PMHS’s agriculture teacher and FFA advisor. “The team was the state runner-up last year.” Marshall has led PMHS’s FFA to multiple area, state and national titles, the last being a Meats Evaluation state title. The Nursery/Landscape CDE allows students to demonstrate their knowledge in plant materials, plant disorders, cultural practices, design and construction, supplies and equipment, safety, interpersonal relations, marketing and records and reports. The National FFA Organization is part of PMHS’s agricultural education programs and is one of four co-curricular student organizations available to Portal students within the school’s six career pathways.
Area Businesses Present $33,000 to Leadership Southeast Georgia’s 2018 Program Leadership Southeast Georgia announces five 2018 major sponsors have donated $33,000 to the 2018 class. Dr. Bill Mase Small Town Perspective on Rural Healthcare Written by Jenny Starling Foss Photography by Frank Fortune
Twenty years ago Dr. Bill Mase happened to be traveling through Statesboro when he stopped to tour Georgia Southern’s campus. He summed up his first impression of the town as “adorable.” Sixteen years later, he interviewed with three others for a faculty position at the Jiann Ping Hsu College of Public Health. Previously an assistant professor in the Department of Environmental Health in the College of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Mase knew of the JPHCPH by reputation when it was endowed and named by Dr. Karl Peace in January 2004, establishing the first School of Public Health in the University System of Georgia. “I was looking for an opportunity to work in rural health research,” he stated. “Georgia Southern’s mission of high quality education was also impressive. I was attracted to the excellence of the faculty in the research area, the work going on in the community and the South Georgia weather. But, mostly I was tired of city life and I wanted to connect with people who cared.” At Georgia Southern for four years now, Dr. Mase is an assistant professor in the JPHCPH Department of Health Policy & Management, and an assistant professor in the Jack N. Averitt College of Graduate Studies. His courses include health policy, ethics, and evidence-based public health. He finds the area to be the perfect environment in which to do community based participatory research (CBPR), a survey tool used by practitioners to assess disparities in the availability of healthcare and to record trends in identifiable concerns within communities. Participants share their knowledge and experience in helping to identify key problems to be studied, formulate research questions in culturally sensitive ways, and use study results to help support relevant program and policy development or social change. There are two concerns that Dr. Mase identifies as important to rural Georgians. The first is the current health profession shortages in nursing, psychiatry, and medicine in general. The second is hospital closings in rural areas of the state. Georgia is ranked number two behind Texas in the number of rural hospitals that have closed. “I’ve had the opportunity to work with a team of twelve faculty members, ten from JPHCPH and two from the College of Business Administration (COBA),” said Dr. Mase. “We have trav-

Dr. Bill Mase eled the state to meet with hospital administrators in rural areas to see how they can stay open. The State Department of Community Health provided us with a grant of over $500,000 to help identify how these community hospitals can improve their financial status and their operations in order to continue providing services.” Dr. Mase was co-investigator with Bettye Apenteng, and was awarded a $100,000 grant in 2016 from the Healthcare Georgia Foundation for rural hospital stabilization pilot evaluation. He was principal investigator with Apenteng and Yelena Tarasenko, and was awarded a $200,000 grant in 2015 from the Georgia Department of Community Health and the Georgia State Office of Rural Health for a community health systems planning grant. Tax credits are also being offered by the state to help rural hospitals continue to operate. This work with Georgia’s rural hospitals in identifying opportunities for improvement has resulted in keeping a significant number operational, reaching from the mountains of North Georgia to the low population counties in southwest Georgia, from the Alabama line to the Georgia coast. Dr. Mase sees the failures in healthcare overall as a systematic problem. “Until we as a nation can come to agree on reimbursement that fairly serves hospitals that care for rural patients, people will continue to be let down,” he said. “We must value everyone whether rural or urban, black or white, male or female; basic healthcare should be available regardless.” Another public health concern that has become a priority is the opioid crisis. According to Dr. Mase, from a policy perspective public health professionals must respond immediately with life-saving initiatives to address the ramifications. “The state has already changed policy concerning several over-thecounter medicines,” Dr. Mase said. “This crisis affects citizens of all income levels. The first responders can’t get there quickly enough in some instances. There are days when two or more overdoses are called in for emergency transport. In Bulloch County eight hundred people have died from overdoses.” This area of research has led Dr. Mase to become very involved with the recovery community. The Center for Addiction Recovery was established at JPHCPH in 2008 and serves students in long-term recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction. Each semester 40 students accepted into the program are supported in recovery with weekly seminars designed to help them develop life skills and to build a support

community while they complete their degrees. “We as a nation need to address all addictions,” he said. “Whether alcohol, opioids or tobacco, addiction is a domestic crisis. I think the only way to solve the problem is through intervention – whether faith based or recovery through a 12-step program,” he said. “Everyone needs to support people to get out of addiction, with no judgement.” Feelings of Dr. Mase reflected in his motto of “One day at a time.” “Don’t dwell on the past,” he said. “The future is in God’s hands. How we wake up and choose to face each day is our choice. I tell myself, ‘Just for today, I will be happy!’” A man of strong faith, Dr. Mays prays for those who are affected by the opioid crisis and addiction. He cites John 3:16 and the 23rd Psalm as favorite scriptures. He also believes his strong faith guided him here. “I grew up in a rural county in Ohio and when I came to Statesboro, I felt as though I came home,” he said. “I feel blessed to have the opportunity to work here. There is a better balance here. People don’t live to work, they work to live.” Dr. Mase believes that the slower pace of life in Statesboro makes it the perfect place to raise a family or to retire, although he is nowhere near retirement age. “I had a neighbor in Ohio who moved here last year,” he said. “I was always talking to her about Statesboro. She’s a retired art teacher and always loved it here when she was able to visit. She was a little familiar with the area having studied at SCAD in Savannah. When she moved here, her health improved and she’s been enjoying a community with great churches, schools, a University and many family amenities. It impressed her that we were one of the top three small towns in America – America’s Best Community. And, she believes it is! “When I go out to other communities facing hospital closings, I see how fortunate we are,” said Dr. Mase. “I know helping these hospital administrators who are doing everything they can to remain open is the reason I am here. To educate the students to give back to the healthcare communities; to educate the communities; to focus on healthcare shortages; to keep rural hospitals operational.” A purpose for which Dr. Mase credits Dr. Peace and his vision. “When I first met with Dr. Peace, I thought about what he and Jiann Ping Hsu did for the University and the healthcare community. He stood tall and I’m on his shoulders. Everything I do is because of his vision. It is a privilege to be able to positively affect the care of so many through our work right here in Statesboro.” S

Optim Provides Fast-Growing Network of Care
Optim
Provides Fast-Growing Network of Care Written by Jenny Starling Foss Photography by Frank Fortune Founded by a group of physicians in 1976 as Southeastern Orthopedic Center, one local healthcare network has grown in the past seven years from a Savannah-based orthopedic practice to one of Georgia’s largest healthcare providers, operating a network of orthopedic surgical centers, pain management clinics and medical centers in Georgia as Optim Healthcare. In 2014, Optim treated more than 62,000 patients. The name changed to Optim in 2011, earmarking the company as a fast-growing, integrated, orthopedic-focused health system with a reputation for clinical excellence and strong brand awareness across the region. Optim is a privately owned and physician led company that provides orthopedic, musculoskeletal and related healthcare services to residents of 19 counties in Southeast Georgia through an orthopedic-focused critical access hospital in Reidsville, an ambulatory surgery center in Savannah, a critical access hospital in Sylvania, seven outpatient physical and occupational therapy clinics, two full-service imaging centers, and eight rural health clinics. The company offers orthopedic services in the areas of foot and ankle, general orthopedics, neck and spine, pediatric orthopedics, sports medicine, total joints, and urgent care, as well as hand, wrist, and elbow. It also provides medical services in the areas of interventional pain management, general surgery, neurosurgery, occupational and hand therapy, physical therapy, plastic surgery, primary care, and radiology/imaging, as well as ear, nose, and throat. The Optim Orthopedics and Optim Therapy facility located in Statesboro on Highway 67 South is familiar to local residents as the practice of John T. Hodges, M.D., Don G. Aaron, Jr., M.D., W. Stephen Tankersley, M.D., and M. Delan Gaines, M.D. While all of the doctors are boardcertified in orthopedic surgery and offer exceptional care, Dr. Tankersley is a fellowship trained hip and knee specialist and Dr. Aaron is fellowship trained in Sports Medicine. Dr. Aaron and Dr. Hodges are team doctors for Georgia Southern Eagle Athletics. Because of the orthopedic focus of many of Optim’s services, the company’s name can be seen on banners across area athletic fields including the Optim Endzone at Paulson Stadium. Recognizing the growing need for interventional pain management,
Optim Health System recently opened an additional location in Statesboro for this specialty. Now located in the Cotton Ridge Medical Plaza on Fair Road, Optim Pain Management provides cutting-edge solutions to treating back and neck pain. It was previously located on Highway 67 South in the same building with Optim Orthopedics and Optim Therapy. Physicians at Optim Pain Management are Gregory Spellman, M.D. and Andrew Pandya, M.D., both board-certified specialists in anesthesia and pain management. Interventional pain management utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to provide a full range of services and treatments for patients suffering from acute and/or chronic pain. Minimally invasive techniques are used to properly diagnose and treat painful conditions with the ultimate goal of helping patients return to their everyday activities as soon as possible and without heavy reliance on medications. “We’re very pleased to add another location in the Statesboro area,” said David Castleberry, present CEO of Optim Health System, and former COO of EGRMC. “Our interventional pain management practice has grown significantly. This new location and its focus on pain management will further strengthen our service capabilities in the area.” At the same time, the original location on Highway 67 South has benefited from a lobby renovation to better serve patients for Optim Orthopedics and Optim Therapy. An additional renovation project is scheduled for later in the year as well. On April 21, 2015, Optim Healthcare joined with National Surgical Healthcare, a Chicago-based owner and operator of 19 surgical hospitals and surgery centers across the country. Now majority owned by NSH, Optim remains a physician led healthcare system with 27 physician stakeholders and over 20 other physicians in its network. Optim Healthcare providers reach from Savannah west to Tifton, and from Sandersville south to Darien. It has health services in 48 locations in southeast Georgia. In addition, it has a practice in Bluffton, S.C., five magnetic resonance Imaging units, six outpatient physical therapy locations and a range of specialists. They include 55 doctors trained in orthopedics, interventional pain management, sports medicine, gastroenterology, surgery and plastic surgery and ear, nose and throat, primary care and radiology. Optim Provides Fast-Growing Network of Care
revenues for Optim Healthcare by July 2014 had reached $150 million. According to a press release about the merger, David Crane, Chairman and CEO of NSH commented, “With its musculoskeletal focus and reputation for strong clinical outcomes and high quality patient care, Optim and NSH are an ideal fit. We are excited about the partnership with Optim and look forward to working together to grow the organization’s capabilities and presence throughout the area.” One way Optim Healthcare has affected rural healthcare in a positive way is through the purchase of Tattnall County Hospital, now Optim Medical Center – Tattnall. The 25-bed hospital located in Reidsville is an orthopedic specialty hospital serving all of the Optim Surgery Centers. “Tattnall was created as an Ortho-specialty hospital,” said Rob Snipes, CEO at Optim Healthcare – Tattnall. “Residents have also benefitted from having primary care, emergency room and general surgery available. If you have an orthopedic procedure, it’s what we do. Employees here care and they really want to help, there’s a different dynamic from a big city hospital, you can tell from the service patients receive. At the same time, we have the best orthopedics in the industry right here in Reidsville.” Comparatively nationwide, the Tattnall hospital receives five star ratings for joint replacement and neurosurgery. “Our staff knows what they are doing,” said Snipes. “We work to change people’s lives in a positive way. We take pride in helping facilitate that change with excellent physicians and nursing staff. The majority of our
patients are very happy when they leave. Many come through the doors in wheelchairs having been immobile for some time and are able to walk out.” The hospital also invites physicians in other specialties to come to local clinics. “We try to serve the community’s needs as much as we can,” said Snipes. In Sylvania, Optim Healthcare operates Optim Medical Center – Screven. Another 25-bed small community hospital, the Screven location also has two community clinics, one in Millen and on ein Sylvania. Optim is the only provider within 25 miles. For residents, having local healthcare means not having to travel great distances in cases of emergency or just for primary care. “For many residents, the only access they have to healthcare is our local Optim facilities,” said Robert Sellers, CEO of Optim Medical Center – Screven. “After patients have major procedures we offer rehab services so that patients can recuperate close to home. Having a support group helps patients heal much quicker. We will compare our quality of care with anyone with similar services. You can’t beat care being provided by members from your own community and the concern they have for family and friends.” The hospital facility is a major economic development engine for Screven County as well. It employs over 100 highly trained healthcare professionals in a community of approximately 2,500 residents, bringing quality of care to the rural community. S

The Neurological Center of East Georgia, P.C. On rare occasions I will see an older male patient who will proudly declare to me that he has never had a headache in his whole life. At that point I congratulate the man because he and I both know how lucky he is. He knows it from a lifetime of hearing about the headache misery of others, and I know it because treating headaches is what I do several hours a week. On a statistical level it can be noted that 45 million people suffer from chronic headaches. That number surpasses the 33 million people combined who suffer from asthma, heart disease, and diabetes. It is also known that many, if not all of the chronic headache sufferers are experiencing some level of disability in their lives due to headaches. The disability comes in many forms such as time lost from work, time lost with the children, and recreational time lost. In the field of neurology we have made many advances in the diagnosis and treatment of headaches. This means that help is now available for all headache sufferers and what was once a hopeless situation for many can now become a cure. This is possible because of the collaborative efforts of hundreds of research and clinical neurologists over the last several years. In addition, there have been great strides in discovering and applying successful treatments including lifestyle interventions, natural health products, or prescription medi- Michael Taormina, M.D. Board Certified in Neurology, cation. uilt in July 2000, East Georgia Regional Medical Center is a four-level, 149 bed acute care hospital featuring a Women’s Pavilion and an adjacent medical office building. The hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, a distinction awarded only to those healthcare facilities that maintain the highest standards of quality. East Georgia Regional Medical Center’s healthcare team consists of over 800 employees and nearly 100 physicians representing a wide range of specialties. The ongoing expansion of medical services and professionals, along with a major investment in technology, has firmly established East Georgia Regional‘s reputation for providing a higher medical standard. East Georgia Regional Medical Center offers a 24-hour physician-staffed emergency department, a Level II neonatal center, outpatient services including endoscopy, same day surgery and ambulatory care, a pain management center, a wound care clinic, a cardiac catheterization lab, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, and state-of-the-art diagnostic procedures including digital mammography, MRI, CT, PET/CT, nuclear medicine and interventional radiology. The Women’s Pavilion provides dedicated services to women of all ages, and includes eight labor, delivery and recovery suites. An Interventional Cardiology service was started in April 2010. This expansion of our cardiology program has allowed patients needing angioplasty and/or stent placement to receive these services without leaving Statesboro. Electrophysiology services were added to the cardiology program in August 2011. The addition of these services has dramatically increased the quality of care in our community. In October 2010, East Georgia Regional became one of only four hospitals in Southeast Georgia capable of performing robotic surgery. This highly specialized surgical tool allows surgeons to perform procedures that are less invasive and require less recovery time. Most recently, East Georgia Regional Medical Center began offering Bariatric Services, including both surgical and nonsurgical weight loss options in Fall of 2018. An interdisciplinary team of weight loss experts including board certified physicians, nurses, dietitians and other health care professionals, are available to provide highly personalized care for all patients. Physical Therapy
a Key Component in Optim’s Growth Written by Jenny Starling Foss Photography by Frank Fortune
A key component in the growth of Optim’s Healthcare System is the provision of physical therapy at the primary Orthopedic Centers throughout the region. Dr. Judson Williams, P.T., D.P.T., M.S., O.C.S., Certified S.M.T./D.N., C.S.C.S., is director of physical therapy for Optim. With an alphabet of certifications after his name, he oversees 31 physical therapists and P.T. assistants and seven occupational therapists for the company. Based in Statesboro, Williams travels between Reidsville, Pooler, Rincon, Sylvania, Vidalia and Savannah. One who likes challenges, Williams is also currently working on a Fellowship of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists (FAAOMPT), a certification which represents a globally recognized credential denoting the highest level of achievement in clinical excellence in orthopedic manual physical therapy. He also travels to Atlanta and Augusta to complete the clinical hours necessary for the certification. A native of Sylvania, Williams played high school football with Dr. Aaron, and earned his B.S. and M.S. in Kinesiology from Georgia Southern. He received a Masters of Physical Therapy from the Medical College

of Georgia and a Doctor of Physical Therapy from the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences with an orthopedic manual therapy focus. He has been working in physical therapy for almost 20 years, as an Orthopedic Certified Specialist for over 10 years, and is certified in Dry Needling and Spinal Manipulation. He completed his Osteopractic training in 2018. In his role with Optim, Williams is in charge of policy, procedures and staffing for physical and occupational therapies. He believes there are three reasons therapy has been such a successful component at Optim. “We have great teamwork between the doctors, the physician’s assistants, the nurse practitioners, physical therapists, occupational therapists, pain management, Imaging – all together providing a quality level of care in rural areas in six locations and two hospitals,” said Williams. “We have a strength in our staff of experienced therapists certified in Ortho-manual therapy, dry needle, and orthotic fabrication,” he said. “The occupational therapists are certified hand therapists, from the elbow down they specialize in fabricating hand orthotics and splints for surgical rehab.” “And, we have convenient locations. Our hospitals, surgery centers and clinics give rural populations access to quality care, which we began a long time ago,” he said. Williams also believes the partnership with NHS benefits his area by opening the door for clinical interns. “We just got clinical residencies from Armstrong,” said Williams. “Now we can use our practices as clinical sites for these students, helping to train even more orthopedic professionals in the area.” Just in time, the original location on Highway 67 South has benefited from a lobby renovation to better serve patients for Optim Orthopedics and Optim Therapy. An additional renovation project is scheduled for later in the year as well. “The physical therapy department is experiencing considerable growth,” said Castleberry. “As a result, we’re expanding that department and providing them with a dedicated entrance and separate waiting area. Growth is a good thing and it’s such a pleasure serving this community with the absolute best healthcare options.” A new office is also soon to be built in Bluffton, S.C. to offer Orthopedics, Pain Management and Imaging. Georgia Southern Consolidation Expands Healthcare Footprint in Southeast
Now that Georgia Southern University has expanded into three campuses in Statesboro, Savannah and Hinesville, its resources and opportunities have expanded as well, especially in the area of healthcare professions. Before consolidating with Georgia Southern, Armstrong State University was the number one producer of undergraduate health profession degrees in the state. Georgia Southern regularly placed among the top five. Now that the dynamic universities are combined, Barry Joyner, Ph.D., dean of the new Waters College of Health Professions, says the College will have an even more significant impact on the great need for healthcare professionals. “Georgia Southern is probably going to represent about 18 percent of all the undergraduate health professions degrees in the state,” he said. “So it is going to have a huge impact, not just on Bulloch County but also on the region.” And while the Waters College of Health Professions will have its headquarters in Savannah, Joyner says the College isn’t “moving” there, as some have speculated. In fact, Georgia Southern has invested significantly in health professions programs and infrastructure on the Statesboro Campus, including a million-dollar renovation to the nursing simulation facility last year, $33.6 million in funding for the new Multidisciplinary Classroom Building, which will include a new nutrition foods lab, and a $5 million renovation to Hanner Pool, which will be home to four new research labs for the Department of Health Sciences and Kinesiology. “Students will be able to get every program that we’ve been offering in the past here,” said Joyner. “Absolutely. None of those programs are going away. The resources will still be here. The faculty will still be here.” Joyner admits that the consolidation means a lot more travel for him, but more importantly, it means exciting new opportunities and new programs for Georgia Southern students. The University will expand its nutrition and food science programs, and students will also have access to a physical therapy program, an accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, as well as several programs in medical laboratory sciences, respiratory therapy and radiologic sciences, which have generated unprecedented student interest. “I think what you’ll see is some expansion of some things that we haven’t done as Georgia Southern in the past that we’ll be able to do now,” said Joyner. “We were already servicing a huge number of undergraduate students and now as we start to look to add some graduate programs, we have some specific things in mind.” Joyner says it’s too early to talk about specific graduate or doctoral programs in health professions at Georgia Southern, but he is excited about the future of the College. Bulloch County and other counties in the region will have access to a greater pool of health professions graduates from a wider variety of specialties. “I think our goal is to be the leader in healthcare education in the southeast,” he said. “That’s our goal. And I think we absolutely have the opportunity to do that.” May/June 2018 • 67

Relationships Matter We recently spent a weekend with our grandson in Indiana, Pennsylvania. I didn’t know anything about the town until he moved there a couple of months ago. It’s the birthplace and hometown of my favorite actor, Jimmy Stewart. We saw the house where the actor grew up, a museum bearing his name, and when you’re standing at a downtown intersection waiting to cross the street, you hear his slow, distinctive drawl telling you it’s safe to walk. Jimmy Stewart was nominated for five
Academy Awards, and won the Best Actor award in 1940. In addition, he volunteered for the United States Army in World War II and became a pilot, flying many missions. He was promoted quickly, and achieved the rank of Brigadier General after the war. It impressed me to read that he was the first movie star to enlist in our armed forces. After getting home I did some additional research on Jimmy Stewart, and came to the conclusion that as important as acting was to him, and the sense of fulfillment he got from
defending our country, his primary focus was on relationships. Early in his acting career he became a friend to fellow actor, Henry Fonda. They shared apartments together in Cape Cod when acting in plays in that vacation spot, and again in New York, and a third time when they both moved to Hollywood. That friendship remained strong the rest of their lives until Mr. Fonda died in 1982. In the late 1940s Jimmy Stewart met the love-of-his-life, Gloria Hatrick. They married in 1949, and in a profession where divorce and remarriage are commonplace, they remained married for 45 years, until Gloria died in 1984. She meant everything to him. I was reading one of Max Lucado’s books in which the author was visiting a church member, George. When Max was invited into the trailer where George lived he was told to “come over here and see my most valuable possession.” Max looked around and then said, “Where, George?” “Right here!” replied George. He then put his arm around a thin, toothless man with long shoulder-length hair and an unkempt beard. “My most valued possession is my buddy, Ralph.” There they were, a couple of crusty old friends. They had found life’s most precious element, a relationship. Relationships. They are our most precious resources. Take our money, our possessions, even our health. But don’t take our most important assets, our relationships. With God, with spouses, with children, and with a good friend or two - what Max Lucado calls “the delicate fusion of two human beings,” “the intricate weaving of two lives,” “two intermingling hearts.” Its takes hard work to make our relationships strong. Don’t be like Tonto when he and the Lone Ranger woke up on the Western plains one morning to find that they were surrounded by a tribe of Indians whose intention was to capture and kill the Long Ranger. In a panicked voice the masked rider said, “What are we going to do, Tonto?” His Indian friend replied, “What do you mean we, Paleface?” What matters most is not how high we climb on the vocation ladder, the property we accumulate, not even our health. What matters most is a relationship or two. Be sure yours are strong and healthy. When conflicts develop be sure to resolve them as soon as possible. Pray daily for those in your life. It is the wise person who values people above all other possessions. May/June 2018 • 69

F Once Upon A Time
From the moment I first saw her, all wrinkled and squirming; and in slow motion like the sun rising on a new day, this baby became my sonnet. And with that preamble, CC and I were forever buddies. It was CC who at the age of two anointed me the tag “Big Daddy.” Sandi Patty wrote and recordered a beautiful grouping entitled “It’s In the In Between.” Her versed lyrics fit the endearing duet of mine and CC’s. Yes, I attended her every public appearance along with a cache of her family and friends. After curtain calls, in those early years, CC and I would escape to an Applebee’s® high top and within the evening’s glow, we enjoyed our Shirley Temples. At our entrance, Angie, the barkeep who came to adore my granddaughter, would announce for all to hear “Yay! Here comes our CC and her Big Daddy.” And there we would bask in the smiles of the many who knew CC as she munched and enjoyed the best French fries ever. Time’s waltz brought the magical dance of growing to the age of ten. By then we were having lunch at Ruby Tuesday’s® in the Savannah Mall, where just down the corridor was the Disney Store®. Need I say more? Disney® offered it all – items for all ages. And let me say CC knew exactly when to change lanes.
A teenager now committed to the rigors of Cheer South, a demanding sport much like the demands of football – practiced until the moon was beginning to peak. This arena of drive toward perfection brought her into understanding though, the squad was six, and each girl knew to keep the commitment front and forward. A mindset developed with balanced execution and acknowledge. Those teen years offered a beckoning of endearing friendships and weekend spend the nights. But! But those norms never took away our outings to the Grind. Applebee’s® and the Horn. A bagel and cream cheese was the advent at the Grind; Mac and Cheese at the Apple; Chicken fingers at the Horn. Keep in mind these routes took several years to unfold. Allow the magical kaleidoscope of sunrises and sunsets as Harry Chapin sang about
them and CC moved swan-like through four gallant years of college life enjoying her role as a varsity cheerleader in Paulson Stadium and later becoming an active Phi Mu. Constant with her solid spiritual commitment, her celebrating the Sabbath leading her to forming a weekly Bible study group. And her Camelot continues. She is twenty-five; in love; engaged and will be with her Brandon, forever. At night during my meditation I thank Him for CC’s being that little girl with the baby voice who brought joy and remembering to her Big Daddy, during those afternoons and in the evening’s softness. I remember by unfolding that special portfolio of memories of not so long ago of this child/lady blessing me as her Big Daddy and one of her always friends. End Note: CC is who she is because of a mother who listened. May/June 2018 • 71
