Adrian Peterson Inducted into Georgia Sports Hall of Fame

The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame 2020 class was inducted in February at the Macon City Auditorium in front of a sold-out crowd. The 2020 class consisted of eight members, including former Georgia Southern running back, Adrian Peterson. Peterson is considered one of the most prolific running backs to play for Georgia Southern. He is still the NCAA’s Division I all-time leading rusher with 6,559 yards in regular-season games. Peterson is a four-time All-American and was awarded the Walter Payton Award in 1999 as the most outstanding player in Division 1-AA. After his days in Statesboro, Peterson was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the 2002 NFL Draft playing seven seasons with them, including Super Bowl XLI. Peterson has his jersey retired at Georgia Southern, and was inducted as a member of the inaugural SoCon Hall of Fame class in 2009, the Georgia Southern Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2012, and the College Football Hall of Fame Class of 2017, making this his fourth Hall of Fame induction. Peterson is currently part of Georgia Southern Head Football Coach Chad Lunsford’s staff, serving as the Director of Student-Athlete Development. www.gseagles.com

The Statesboro-Bulloch Chamber of Commerce has signed an agreement with the Ogeechee Technical College Foundation to establish an endowment for the creation of the “Statesboro-Bulloch Chamber of Commerce Agribusiness Scholarship” benefitting students at Ogeechee Tech. Canoochee Sandhills WMA Celebrates Grand Opening

In February, local dignitaries cut a ribbon opening more than 6,300 new acres at the Canoochee Sandhills Wildlife Management Area, located in Bulloch and Bryan Counties, now available for Southeast Georgia outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy, thanks to the partnership efforts of multiple agencies and Foundations. The Canoochee Sandhills WMA is a mix of sandhill, flatwoods, bay swamp, and floodplain forest, including fire-adapted uplands and flatwoods, and frequently-saturated wetlands, including floodplains that border Lotts Creek, a major tributary of the Canoochee River and a large swamp knowns as Bulloch Bay. Many of the sandy uplands on the property are remnants of ancient wind-blown river dune formations, and provide important habitat for the gopher tortoise and eastern indigo snake. The Canoochee Sandhills WMA was purchased utilizing a U.S. Fish and Wildlife National Coastal Wetland Conservation Grant, a National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Acres for America (WalMart) grant, the National Wild Turkey Federation, State of Georgia bond funds, Knobloch Family Foundation and Bobolink Foundation funds associated with the Georgia Gopher Tortoise Conservation Initiative, and The Conservation Fund. Additionally, a conservation easement placed on The Conservation Fund property through the Natural Resources Conservation Service reduced the purchase price by $1.5 million.

Each year the University of Georgia recognized and celebrates the 100 fastest growing businesses owned or operated by UGA Alumni. This year three Statesboro businesses made the list: Forest Heights Pharmacy, Three Tree Coffee and Runway of Statesboro, the umbrella organization for Sole and Dish Boutiques. Forest Heights Pharmacy owners Ben Ross, (PharmD 2008), and Sonny Ross, (BSPH 1974), were honored as the #48 business on the list. Forest Heights Pharmacy is a fullservice independent retail pharmacy specializing in individualized compounded prescriptions. By utilizing a state-ofthe-art lab, they offer alternative solutions to conventional pharmacy issues. Runway of Statesboro owner Laura Lanier, (AB 2000), operator of Statesboro boutiques Sole and Dish, was honored for her boutiques’ approach to targeting different demographics, and delivering on-trend apparel, shoes and accessories while emphasizing excellent customer service. Three Tree Coffee owner Philip Klayman, (BSA 2011), was honored for his innovative approach to community engagement. In addition to providing great customer service, through their roastery and coffee shop locations, Three Tree Coffee uses specialty coffee to, among other things, empower farmers and end human trafficking. Applicants were measured by their business’s compounded annual growth rate during a three-year period. The Atlanta office of Warren Averett CPAs and Advisors, a Bulldog 100 partner since the program began in 2009, verified the information submitted by each company. Statesboro’s Most Fabulous Woman Delia Mobley WRITTEN BY JENNY STARLING FOSS

F

or many years talented local musician Delia Mobley owned and operated Statesboro’s Kindermusik program, combining her love of music with her passion for education and children. A special education teacher by training, Mobley taught at Southeast Bulloch and Nevils schools. She also taught private piano lessons and began working with small children and infants with the Kindermusik program in 2000. A Bulloch County native who grew up in Stilson and graduated from Georgia Southern, Mobley moved to Statesboro at age 19. “I really had the best educators in the Bulloch County School System as a student,” said Mobley, “And they are still so supportive. I have really benefitted from knowing and being taught by them.” Mobley recalled teachers Donna Brigman and Alice Matthews who mentored her and are still her dear friends today. They were instrumental in introducing her to community service at an early age.

THE CULTURE

most fabulous woman

“It was Alice, Ginny Tillman, and Marie Orman who got me involved in the Statesboro-Georgia Southern Symphony Guild, which was my first volunteer position,” said Mobley. “I served as publicity chairman.” Over time, she also served on the board of the Statesboro Arts Council, which directed the Averitt Center for the Arts, and worked with the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Mobley also spent many years as a member of the Statesboro Service League, where she remains a sustaining member. Community service quickly became a part of Mobley’s nature. It was her servant heart which reacted when first encountering homeless people in Statesboro. “I first saw the need when I was teaching Kindermusik in some of the churches. The homeless and those in need would visit the churches seeking help,” said Mobley. “The ministers would talk to me about it, about how many times they were called on to assist a family with housing for the night. And then I began working with the hotels to find rooms for them, paid by the church.” Max Manack, head of missions for First United Methodist Church at the time, where Mobley is a member, met with her and her husband, Chip, to talk about the problem, and 18 statesboromagazine.com

to see if she and Chip would be willing to head up a committee to examine the problem and look at the possibility of building a facility to temporarily house the population in need. For six years Mobley and the committee looked at the local need for a facility for the homeless, compiling numbers and examining what exactly the church and community could do to address the problem. By 2010, she was carrying around supplies in her car trunk to give to people in need when she saw them out in the community. “We started with a committee and a lot of prayer and faith,” said Mobley. People from other churches joined the effort, and beginning in 2011, Open Hearts Community Mission started assisting hundreds of homeless individuals, providing them temporary housing and life counseling and finding them jobs with local businesses. For the first few years, Mobley and her group of volunteers continued to put people up in motels. But Mobley recognized that simply housing the homeless on a temporary basis was not the answer. She felt, and her research showed, that the community needed a facility which provided short-term housing, helped residents with job searches, and started them on a savings plan that would help individuals to eventually find a permanent home and sustain themselves and/or their families. In 2015, efforts to build a facility moved forward. The Lester Brannen family donated land, local builder David Bobo provided supplies and labor for building, and countless volunteers organized fundraisers to help fund the Open Hearts Community Mission. The mission’s main fundraiser is the Annual 5K/10K Chocolate Run, spearheaded by volunteer Jennifer Sammons Davis, and billed as Statesboro’s Sweetest Race. It raised $55,000 in February of this year. The Mission opened in July of 2017. A dedication ceremony was held in December of that year.

“I never intended to be director,” Mobley said. “In fact I said I would never do it. I would help to get it built, but I did not want to be involved in running it. Then I became more in tune to what the Lord had planned for me. Director was not on my radar, but I filled in for the director position after Rev. Jim Lewis, our opening director, left us. I told the board that I would fill in for four months until they could find a new director. They hired me to be the director in 2019.” “I really didn’t know that I would love it so much,” she said. “I now believe I was meant to do this. I look forward to it every day. It is my conviction. I love it. The days go by so fast. I have a strong compelling feeling about it. It has changed me. I have learned so much. It is not like treating the masses. Each person has a different story and needs different help. They are really, truly like my family.” And as part of the “family” residents help out in the Mission. “Mostly they are good people who’ve had a hard time,” said Mobley. “One has been an educator and holds a master’s degree in Special Education. One was a chef. It is so rewarding to see them get back on their feet.” Mobley shares that the Mission is not a “homeless shelter.” There is a difference. The mission’s purpose is to provide housing and support for a person or a family to get back on their feet and eventually move out into a home of their own. The missions provides them support in finding a job, getting an education, budgeting their money, clothing them, feeding them and providing them a place to live until they can reach their goal. A shelter provides temporary housing, often only one night at a time, to fill basic immediate needs of the homeless. “If we can’t take them here, we will make sure they have a place to go,” said Mobley. There are many ways for area residents and volunteers to assist the Mission. It is self-sustaining, receives no money from the government to operate, and depends on fundraising and the contributions from churches, civic organizations and individuals. Those wishing to donate can visit the website at www.ohcm.org. The Meal-a-Month program allows families, Sunday school classes, civic clubs, or individuals to provide one meal a month for the residents which can be prepared and brought to the Mission or prepared at the Mission. Program volunteers may eat with the residents or drop-off a meal. A mentor program assures that each resident has a mentor who demonstrated leadership skills and meets with them, visits with them and counsel them. There are many women mentors, but it is hard to find male mentors. The Mission will take donations of paper products, hygiene products, and school supplies for kids. When the residents move out, they are in need of furniture, appliances and basic household items as well to get started. An announcement will be forthcoming soon about additional property which has been acquired by the Mission for possible future expansion. “I wish I had more of me to give each person here at the mission,” said Mobley. “I’d go have lunch with them more at their workplace to let them know I support them. I have to run the office now, but I want them to know we are a part of their everyday life. And we are here for them.” In addition to her work at the Mission, Mobley continues to play the piano and sing with area residents in assisted living communities. And, to teach private piano lessons when possible. She’s also serves as the substitute pianist for Nevils United Methodist Church and is a member of the Boro Community Choir. S March/April 2020

Making it happen

Statesboro’s Most Fabulous Man Al Chapman, III WRITTEN BY JENNY STARLING FOSS

W

e were blown away when Statesboro’s most fabulous local restaurant, Gnat’s Landing, was voted No. 1 by readers in an unprecedented nine categories of the 2020 Fabulist contest! The popular entertainment venue, The Blue Room, shagged two No. 1 spots as Most Fabulous Place to Dance and Most Fabulous Live Music Venue. And local taqueria Del Sur placed first in the Most Fabulous Outdoor Dining category. It’s clear to see that principal owner of all three establishments, Al Chapman III, has a knack for making fabulous dining and entertainment experiences happen. Chapman started out as an employee of Gnat’s original owner, Robert “Boz” Bostock, who founded Gnat’s Landing on St. Simons Island in 1999. Chapman arrived at Georgia Southern from his home in Brunswick, Georgia, in 1999, but after a couple of years discovered his real passion lie in live entertainment and the recording arts; especially live sound show production. “I picked up and moved to Orlando in 2001,” said Chapman. “I graduated in 2003, and moved to Fernandina Beach, Florida, to help Alben Yarbrough open a Spanky’s Restaurant there.”

THE CULTURE

most fabulous man Known for a laid back atmosphere and as “Home of the Original Chicken Finger,” Spanky’s specialized in a menu of sandwiches, chicken fingers, pizza and pub fare. With locations in towns along coastal Georgia, (and Fernandina), the restaurants were thriving spots for tourists, beach goers and boaters. Chapman was able to absorb the secrets to success of one of the coast’s most popular hangouts. It wasn’t long before he got a call from Bostock inviting him to help open a Gnat’s Landing in Statesboro. “Gnat’s struggled the first few years here,” said Chapman, “It took some time to find the right management and get it going.” Chapman left Gnat’s a couple of times during those early years, at one point pursuing an AAS degree in funeral service education from Ogeechee Technical College. Chapman’s mother and father owned and operated Chapman Funeral Home and Allison Memorial Chapel, in Brunswick and St. Mary’s, before their recent passing. Businesses that his sisters Allyson and Sloan continue today. It wasn’t long before Bostock called Chapman again to return to Statesboro as restaurant manager to close Gnat’s down. “I knew what was wrong with the operations,” said Chapman. “I saw the potential and knew that I could increase business and do something special in Statesboro.” In July of 2007, Chapman bought Gnat’s with the dream of having a restaurant that caters to both locals and Georgia Southern students. “I had the help of people like Bruce Yawn. He helped me to gain access to the building,” said Chapman. “The City of Statesboro has always supported our efforts as well. And, for the first three years Gnat’s broke even. But, every year since we have seen an increase in revenue and we’re into our 14th year here.” Since owning Gnat’s, Chapman has overseen several remodeling efforts including adding a covered outdoor deck to the restaurant’s south side. There’s a stage in the bar area for live performances and a full menu available seven days a week. The success of Gnat’s led to a need for more storage and catering space, and Chapman purchased property directly across the Blue Mile known to many readers as the old Hardee’s building. Instead of storage and catering, Chapman got an idea for another restaurant venture. “The initial plan was for brick oven pizza,” Chapman said. “But as new pizza

places began opening we changed the plan to a taco shop. We were thinking $2 margaritas and $1 tacos. We started with the menu and began to get really creative, more upscale than originally planned. We just ran with it and decided to do fresh squeezed juices, the freshest ingredients - a taqueria type establishment. Bradley Taylor is the general manager there and is doing a great job.” Chapman’s passion for restaurants is something he shares with part owner and Director of Operations Kaleo Lyles. Lyles has a partial interest in Gnat’s, Del Sur and The Blue Room, along with Chapman. “I couldn’t do it without Kaleo,” said Chapman. “He started as a waiter at Gnat’s. His energy, organizational skills and work ethic are phenomenal. He helps run it all.” William Bridwell, another co-owner of The Blue Room, and founder of Airbound Entertainment, LLC, handles the artists that are booked. Lyles handles the day to day operations of all three establishments, including hiring, while Chapman works behind the scenes and handles the lights and sound at The Blue Room for the bands who perform there weekly on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. “We’re able to book performing artists into The Blue Room, mostly from Nashville, who may be coming through on tour,” said Chapman. Acts like country artist Jon Langston, who has opened for Luke Bryan; Riley Green, who tours with Brad Paisley; Morgan Wallen, whose single “Up Down” features Florida Georgia Line; and new Country music duo Muscadine Bloodline. “We’ve been able to book some great musicians,” said Chapman. “We’ve been open for almost two years and it’s been very successful so far. The locals really support us. Most of our performances are sold out or near capacity.” Chapman’s recipes for success employ around 200 people, a significant economic impact for Statesboro, with two restaurants on the Blue Mile. He has mentored many equally successful restauranteurs, like Dustin Grace, current general manager of Gnat’s who has been employed there for 12 years, who has also had a big impact on the success of the restaurant. Another former employee, Ben Worthy, is doing a great job in Athens as general manager of Pauley’s Crepe Bar. “It is very rewarding to know you’ve had a positive impact on young people,” said Chapman. “It’s one of the most satisfying aspects of what I do, besides just enjoying entertaining people and making them smile.” In addition to running three businesses, Chapman enjoys anything to do with water – boating, fishing, boarding, skiing, and spending valuable time with his family, wife, Chrissy, and sons Landon and Reid. Chapman treasures his family and believes they are the most important part of his life. “When I look at all this I don’t see it as what I have done,” said Chapman. “It’s more like - look how blessed and lucky I am. I’m thankful to my parents and my family for always supporting me in chasing my dreams.” S March/April 2020

Diane tran of Luxury Nails Most Fabulist Nail Salon for 7 Years WRITTEN BY JENNY STARLING FOSS

W

e can’t find another business that has been the Most Fabulous every year for all seven years of our contest! But Luxury Nails has! Owned by Tom and Diane Tran of Brooklet, Luxury Nails opened in November of 2008, on Buckhead Drive in a new shopping center in Statesboro. Diane attended school and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta, where her mother still resides. She worked part time at a nail shop during high school. It was soon after graduation that she met and started dating Tom Tran. They married in 2003, and joined the family business of nail care. “My sister and brother do nails, too,” said Diane. “And all of Tom’s family does nails.” In addition to doing nail care and design, the couple also works to continually upgrade their business keeping it fresh and comfortable for their loyal clientele. “Tom designed our shop and does all of the renovating and remodeling himself,” said Diane. “We have just purchased new chairs, and are upgrading our spa area also.” To keep abreast of innovations within the industry, Diane also attends continuing education classes and trade shows in Atlanta. They offer the latest in nail care and salon services. “We also do brows, eyelashes and eyebrow waxing,” said Diane. “We feature a volcano spa pedicure and other scented pedicure options that are very relaxing.” The Trans insist on using plastic liners in their foot tubs, and a new set of sealed instruments with each client. For manicures, the Trans offer the latest in options, the most popular being the SNS or powder-dipping system which pampers the nails, while creating a perfect manicure. There’s a wide variety

of color options from pastels to ombre, from glitter to the more natural pink & white finishes. Luxury Nails has a friendly and caring staff including Tom’s sister-in-law, Linda, and the Tran’s first customer at Luxury Nails, Barbara Davidson. “They opened at 9:00 a.m. in November of 2008, and I walked in at about 9:15 a.m.,” said Barbara. “I was their first customer, and I never left.” Barbara now works with the Trans to help run the business and help take care of their growing family. The Trans have three sons: Justin and Taylor, who go to Southeast Bulloch High and Middle Schools, and Thomas, who is 3-years-old. A fourth son is due in two months. Family is very important to the Trans. Diane’s maternal grandparents and other relations still live in Vietnam. She visits that part of her family each year. The Trans have a total of ten employees, and see an average of 60 -70 customers per day, with 80 – 90 on Saturdays. They take appointments, walk-ins, and referrals, and offer gift certificates for purchase. The salon is spacious and there are no long waits with ten manicure nail stations, 14 adult pedicure massage chairs, and two children’s pedicure chairs. Hands on massage services are also available. “We also have a skincare line called NuSkin,” said Diane. “It is a premium anti-aging skin care product that we have found to be very popular with our clients.” What do Diane and Tom enjoy most about owning Statesboro’s Most Fabulous Nail Salon? “We really like bringing fashionable products to our customers, and making them pretty,” said Diane. “Our goal is to continue providing the best possible customer service. We really enjoy making our customers beautiful and happy.” S

Denna Hughes of Split Ends Most Fabulous Hair Salon WRITTEN BY JENNY STARLING FOSS

T

his isn’t the first appearance on the Fabulist for Denna Hughes, master stylist and co-owner of the 2020 Most Fabulous Hair Salon, Split Ends. Denna was voted by Statesboro Magazine readers as the Most Fabulist Hair Stylist in 2016. We chose her to help style the hair of Most Fabulous Woman of the Year, Delia Mobley, for our cover shoot. When you take a look at Denna’s background, you’ll see that her commitment to the salon, her clientele and the community really set her apart. Denna started out working at Henry’s Hair Cuts, a shop owned by Henry Doyle, a barber and local legend known for offering walk-in haircuts at his popular and busy shop near Georgia Southern in the University Plaza. “Rena Woodcock, co-owner of Split Ends, and I worked for Henry together,” said Denna. “There were four of us and Henry trained us all. He worked with us and taught us so much. We worked long hours and even when we had appointments lined-up, Henry had us accommodate any walk-ins. It was very fast paced.” Denna left Henry’s when she married husband Mike Hughes, and moved to Augusta for a while. When she moved back to Statesboro a few years later, she had to rebuild her clientele. “I worked at the Salon at Village Square and then 67 Styles as the manager,” said Denna. “Rena and I worked together again at the Salon at Village Square. After we each had an established clientele, we decided it was time to open our own shop.” Rena and Denna first opened Split Ends on the corner of West Jones and Zetterower. “We remodeled two houses to get the shop we wanted,” said Denna. They were able to purchase the property next door, a larger house, and turn it into the salon that they envisioned. “I always wanted a salon that had separate rooms for the stylists, instead of everyone out in the open like in other salons,” said Denna. “I think having an

54 statesboromagazine.com

March/April 2020

individual space like that gives the stylists privacy with their clients and provides a more relaxing atmosphere. It feels more like a home.” The co-owners work well together and complement each other in their management styles. “Rena is a great entertainer,” said Denna. “She knows all the great Southern quotes and sayings. She is so funny and keeps us all laughing. She’s a great storyteller. While I’m more of a listener who shares stories.” Split Ends has grown since Denna and Rena first started 15 years ago, and now employs 12 stylists and one receptionist. Most of the stylists have held at least 90% of their clientele and enjoy many repeat customers. Customers who love that Split Ends offers a full range of salon services including cuts, color, shampooing, styling, extensions, permanents, texturizing, highlights, lowlights, balayage, ombre, and fashion colors. They serve both men and women, by appointment, and walk-ins. The ladies believe in giving back to the community, too. “All of our stylists have their passions and causes that they support,” said Denna. “Mine is Fostering Bulloch and the Royal Family Camp for younger children. My husband and I fostered for ten years. We’ve been able to have 30 children in our home over that time, six of them long-term. It is very rewarding to be able to impact a child’s life in a positive way.” The salon also supports the Humane Society, Safe Haven, and they hold a hair day for residents of the recovery center. Split Ends is also a drop-off point for Hope Chest, and will deliver items to the facility that are donated. “We just love the relationships we have been able to build over the years and are really blessed to have such a loyal clientele,” said Denna. “When I’m out sick or I have to be away from the salon, I’m eager to come back to work to be with my clients and socialize. I love what I do and I love my customers. We share our stories, and sometimes I help them and sometimes they help me.” S

Seth really wanted custom bolo ties for the wedding so he individually designed each of his groomsmens’ bolo ties (and his own!) with coppersmith Alisha Jerelle at Bolo Revival in Oregon. The bolo ties were made of White Howlite and Dendritic Opal. The couple had their Nashville songwriter friends sing and play guitar for the ceremony. Janna’s siblings wrote a remix to “I Want it that Way” by The Backstreet Boys and performed it at the reception. It was a small, intimate wedding by design, so all toasts were saved for after the wedding. A large amount of time was set aside for toasts after dinner. Something old, something borrowed: The bride used a piece of lace from her mother’s wedding veil to wrap stems of her bridal bouquet. All of the wedding party stayed together in a four-story cabin for the week. They skied before the rehearsal dinner in Winter Park. The couple wanted their rehearsal dinner to be cozy, so they actually had catering brought to the wedding party cabin and that’s where everyone had dinner after the rehearsal. Everyone was encouraged to get into their comfy clothes and cozy up by the fire! While on the bachelorette trip with her bridesmaids, Janna picked out a special perfume to wear on her wedding day. The guest book was a large leatherbound coffee table book by John Fielder on the changing scenery of Colorado over the last few decades. It will now hold all the wedding memories and be a keepsake on the couple’s coffee table. S

It meant so much to them to be able to feel like their family members were included with small tokens of love used during the ceremony. “In May of 2016, my Grandma Ruby passed away at Ogeechee area hospice here in Statesboro,” said Chris. “She always said she wanted to be there the day that we got married. So in honor of her, we took a photo of her and a rose and ‘reserved’ a seat for her next to my parents. It meant so much to me to have her there, and I know that she was smiling down on us on that day.” “As I was getting ready, my mother gave me a gift,” said Amanda. “She gave me a locket brooch that my Meme, my grandmother on my mother’s side, used to wear. Inside the locket she had placed a picture of my Meme and my Granddaddy, my father’s father. I was shocked to tears, and I began to feel so many emotions at the time, but ultimately I was happy and blessed to be able to have them with me. We pinned the brooch to my bouquet in order for them to be close to me during the wedding. It was one of the best gifts that I have ever received.” S

he Rea’s love story began on October 24, 2014. They met through a mutual friend in high school, and began dating. Their first date, and most memorable, was attending the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair in Statesboro, Georgia. They attended proms together and enjoyed all of the things high school sweethearts do! They had been dating for three years when Oswaldo asked Courtney to be his forever. They got engaged in September of 2018, and then began planning their special day. Many special things were incorporated into the wedding to make it especially memorable, but the most sentimental part was the picture station they set up, with pictures and sweet quotes from the bride’s late Grandmother. They wanted to have a piece of her with the family on their wedding day. The flower girl was Oswaldo’s sweet niece, Annaleah, and she sure won guests over with her sweet personality! The rehearsal dinner was provided on the evening before the wedding by the bride’s mother and father, everyone enjoyed a Low Country Boil at the venue (Mossy Oak Farms) while getting ready and practicing for the big day! buzz worthy bites

"Hey, Hey, Hey, Boo Boo! What's in that Pic-A-Nic Basket?" WRITTEN BY LAZAR BROWN OGLESBY

A

phrase made famous by a cartoon character named Yogi Bear. I remember watching Yogi and his side kick Boo Boo as they pilfered picnic baskets from unsuspecting campers at Jellystone Park. I was always more concerned about what foods were in the basket than I was with the antics of the inquisitive bears. Reflecting on a myriad of childhood memories, I realize my thoughts have often times wandered to food. I could imagine all of the wonderful morsels nestled in those overflowing baskets. Something about packing a basket full of comfort in the form of food and dining outdoors has always appealed to me. On the long summer days of my childhood I would sneak a tablecloth out of my mom’s linen closet and pack my Care Bear lunch box with a ham sandwich on white bread, so fresh it stuck to the roof of my mouth, a can of Beanie Wienies, with a pull tab for easy opening, and a thermos of sweet tea to wash it all down. I carved out a hollow in the giant azalea bushes in the front yard and nestled myself into a pine scented burrow to enjoy my lunch, until someone started to miss me and I heard “Zar” being called through a slamming screen door. Summer days spent at my Grandma’s house in Twin City were perfection. She prepared the most delicious meals starting with cheesy Cream of Wheat for breakfast. She called it “creama creama”. We played in the patch behind her house, explored the canopy created by the graceful drooping limbs of the magnolia tree in her front yard, and made terrariums in old pickle jars filled with moss and violets excavated from a cool, shady corner of her brick home. My love for cooking began in Grandma’s kitchen. We baked cookies, honey spice bars, and cheese straws. She kept these staple snacks on the buffet in her living room, a special treat for guests or grandchildren to nibble on if they stopped by for a visit. 86 statesboromagazine.com

buzz worthy bites On sunny afternoons we usually ventured to George L. Smith State Park. Our explorations led to the old mill house where we watched the water cascading down the back side in foaming torrents before it met the creek below. Our galivanting always made our stomachs grumble with hunger and we would gobble up a lunch of hot dogs, potato chips, and ice-cold, canned apple juice near the playgrounds. Grandma still asks if I remember our days playing and exploring, and I recall all the memories in detail for her so she knows I hold those times dear. My adult version of picnicking is filling a cooler will slabs of thick cut bologna and even thicker slices of sweet onion, along with white bread and Dukes mayonnaise, and loading up the dogs for a day on the water. The cooler is packed in the boat along with a tiny charcoal grill we found on sale at the Dollar General, chairs, towels, umbrellas, and all the other necessities. We head to our favorite sandbar on the Ogeechee. As the dogs frolic and play, we fish and wait until the coals are gleaming red and covered in gray ash. The bologna sings a hissing song when it hits the grill and turns dark and crisp around the edges. The caramelized bologna, onion, and mayo make the yummiest sandwich you have ever tasted and is best enjoyed with your toes in the sand and the sun’s rays shining down. S

the spiritual pathway

Friendly Competition WRITTEN BY REV. DR. H. WILLIAM PERRY

A

s a child I learned the importance of being loving and kind. Mother would tell me to use words like thank you and please and I’m sorry. She would say, “Be nice to your sisters, Bill.” At the same time I was taught to be competitive. Mother would ask, “How’d you do on your test?” When I told her, she would ask how Anne did, and David and Elizabeth and Kay. If their scores were better than mine neither she, nor Daddy, were happy with me. And Daddy taught me to be competitive in playing ball. So early in life I saw the conflict between being kind and being competitive. As a teenager, I learned how the two attitudes can exist together. While in high school, I worked in a clothing store. I learned an important lesson during those years. If a customer came into the store to buy an item, and we did not have it in his size, Mr. Gilmore, the store owner, would send me down the street to Fleet’s Department Store to see if they had the item. If they did, I would take it quickly back to Gilmore’s for the customer. Mr. Fleet would do the same thing; send his workers to Gilmore’s for an item. Here they were, competitors, yet willing to help each other be successful. You can be competitive without being rivals. What positive feelings the examples of those two store owners gave me. There is a fine line between competition and rivalry. So often rivalry takes competition up a notch and it can become negative and hateful. In the early days of electricity in our country, Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse were in competition concerning the use of electricity in our homes. Mr. Edison promoted DC current, the kind you find in batteries, and Mr. Westinghouse was in favor of AC current, the kind that comes through electric lines. AC current won. Mr. Edison 90 statesboromagazine.com

March/April 2020

was not happy about that. Soon after electricity came into common use, Mr. Edison was asked by the New York Commission on Capital Punishment if electricity could be used for execution so they could stop hanging those sentenced to death. So he developed the electric chair. But what would you call death by electricity? They couldn’t decide. Mr. Edison said, “I know! Let’s say they have been sentenced to be Westinghoused!” The commission didn’t agree, so the discussion continued until the terms “death by electrocution” and “sentenced to the electric chair” were suggested. In the book of Romans in the Bible we are told to outdo each other in honor. We are to love each other, even our enemies. A pastor got a note from a child a few days after he had preached on that scripture. In the note were these words: “Dear Pastor, I am only six and do not have any enemies yet. I hope to have some when I’m seven. Love, Jennifer.” A man heard another man criticize him on the radio. He was going to fight back but a friend said, “If you defend yourself the Lord can’t defend you. Leave it in His hands.” I went to visit a new family who had just moved to Statesboro. I rang the doorbell but no one came to the door. I pulled out a card to leave so they would know I had been by, and noticed another card stuck in the door. It was from the Methodist pastor. My first thought was to take it with me. But no, that wouldn’t be right. Let the family know that two pastors were glad they had moved to our community. I guess you would call that friendly competition. Mother and Daddy did have an impact on me. They helped me see that I can be lovingly competitive. S

Gone Too Soon WRITTEN BY RIC MANDES

I

t is a chilly September morning in 1952. I am bone tired from having to pull a double shift at the Paper Mill where I have been working since graduating from Glynn Academy in 1951; a double shift in this case is from three in the afternoon until seven the next morning. Now walking the tracks leading from a giant warehouse, where bundles of pulp sit waiting to be shipped, I could not wait to take a bath at Granny’s small cottage. And try to sleep. It was then I heard the voice resounding through the parade of weary workers. “Hey Mandes, you hear about Perman Tyre?” “Yeah,” I shouted back. “He was giving Betty a surprise birthday party last night. I was planning on going but the eleven to seven guy didn’t show up.” Then the voice of thunder, “I don’t know about any party, Mandes, but Perman is dead. Deader than hell. Hit a train out on the Old Jesup Highway. Said he and his buddies left skid marks over a hundred yards long. A buddy was driving his dad’s new ‘98 Olds. Reckon they wanted to see what that baby would do.” It was all too surreal. No way was my blond Viking gone. Too full of life to be gone. As I walked into Granny’s living room, she looked up from her Bible, took one glance at me and asked, “Rickie, what is wrong? Are you not feeling well? Those double shifts are just not good.” “Granny,” I paused, “Someone just told me Perman was dead. And I just don’t believe it Granny. She closed her Bible as I knelt on the carpet near her chair. “Let me call Minnie,” she said. Aunt Minnie was Granny’s youngest daughter who was a shift operator for the phone company. She lifted the receiver from the cradle. “Let me speak to Minnie please. Thank you. Minnie, Rickie just heard Perman Tyre was dead.” For the next few seconds Granny listened, she quietly returned the receiver and looked at me and said, “Rickie it’s true. He was killed in an accident last night around midnight.” She walked from the chair to the sofa and beckoned me to sit by her. Quiet drifted into her small living room. “Cry Rickie,” she said. “It’s what we do in moments such as this one.” 92 statesboromagazine.com

March/April 2020

And I did while she held my hands. It was then Granny brought forth a testimony of faith. “Rickie, I truly believe God does not make these things happen. But he allows them to happen. Leaving us in the dark for a while, and then one day we discover why. You know how much I cared for that rascal. When he would come booming through my front door hollering “where is my special Granny?” Then he would ask, flirting with me, “Any goodies in the icebox?” His favorite was any leftover bread pudding. And so Rickie, I will truly miss his wonderful uncontrolled joy of living,” she paused and said simply, “we must celebrate him and the goodness he brought with him.” And then she prayed, “Lord, we are of broken hearts this day. Perman is gone. Gone home to be with you. It is now we call upon our faith to lean on as we feel such a heavy sense of loss. We must remember there is no pain or suffering in heaven. Perman is with your angels now in Glory land.” We just sat there as Granny continued holding my hand. Two days later I attended the funeral. And I cannot recall a word that was said. Teenagers do not know what to do when death claims an eighteen year old. This took place 60 years ago. During that span of time I would see Mr. Tyre and he always hugged me whispering, “I miss my boy Rickie. I keep hoping he will just walk in and have breakfast with me.” What do I still remember about our blond Viking? His glass was always half full. That next March of ‘53, I was drafted and spent two years in Europe. It was during my stay in Germany and France I visited Canterbury, Notre Dame, The Sistine Chapel, and while in those Holy Places I would always speak loud and clear “Perman Tyre.” I would then light a candle in his honor. When I returned home to Granny’s cottage, I visited the grave site of my dear friend. “Hey Viking, I talked you up all over Europe.” Suddenly there was a wonderful breeze. Warm and everlasting. S
