FOR THE GOOD LIFE The “good life” isn’t just about money or vacations or fun. It’s about health and wellness, clean environments, an active intellectual life, strong social networks and a sense of community — locally and around the world. At Georgia Southern University, health and wellness is a cornerstone of our mission. Through the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health and the Waters College of Health Professions, we’re producing the nurses, public health professionals, researchers, therapists and radiologists that make southeast Georgia a better place to live. We’re teaching our students to be more active. We’re teaching soldiers how to prevent injuries. We’re pioneering concussion research to make athletes safer. Helping with vaccine distribution throughout the Coastal Empire? Yeah, we’re doing that too. We’re ready to bring the “good life” to southeast Georgia. Ready to heal. Ready to thrive.
Because ready is what we do. Learn more at GeorgiaSouthern.edu

ow that we’re vaccinated, and mask mandates have been lifted, let’s talk about staying healthy. This issue of Statesboro Magazine provides a look at area physicians through East Georgia Regional Medical Center’s official 2022 Physicians Guide. Keep this magazine handy as a reference guide to the superior healthcare professionals who serve the Statesboro area, or visit www. statesboromagazine.com throughout the year to reference the digital guide. Inside this issue we also provide a closer look at dedicated physicians Scott and Chelsea Mikell, who married after completing medical school in 2014, finished their respective residencies in 2018, then moved to Statesboro to practice their specialties. Together their practices cover patients from birth to old age. Read how they’re making a real difference in the healthcare community. Another Bulloch County native who’s investing in preserving local history, and his family’s legacy, is attorney Joe Edward “Matt” Mathews, Jr. Matt’s newly formed law firm Bruce, Mathews & Lavoie, occupies the former home of his great-great grandfather Ed L. Smith. Keeping tradition alive, he and wife, Dr. Loren Mathews, have purchased the home of Matt’s late grandmother, Jean Mathews, to preserve the history of both the Smith & Mathews families. We think you’ll agree, it’s quite a legacy. We give you something to smile about with our story on local dentist, Dr. Jason McGibony. He has recently expanded the practice, McGibony & Associates, to include more dentists with specialties, more examination rooms and a new surgery suite. Find out how Dr. McGibony is on the forefront of dental innovations with the team members, products and equipment to provide a full range of services to the patients he treats like family. Stay healthy by finding an outdoor activity you and the whole family can enjoy. Check out the Summer Fun Guide for exciting things to do while the kids are out of school. There are day camps, petting zoos or jump in for a swim at Splash in the Boro. We’re sure you’ll find something fun to do in Statesboro during those long sunny days ahead. Enjoy!

The crazy characters of Fayro, Texas, return to the Emma Kelly stage on May 5-8 in Southern Hospitality, the second in the trilogy of laugh-out-loud, knee-slapping comedies that follow the escapades of the wacky Futrelle Sisters. A popular all-local cast performed Dearly Beloved last season, which was the first play of the series. In Southern Hospitality, Frankie (Rachel Elkins), Twink (Nichole Deal), Honey Raye (Julie Moody) and Rhonda Lynn (Christie McLendon) are on a mission to save their beloved hometown. Ever since the Super SmartMart and the rendering plant closed, folks have been leaving Fayro in droves. It seems a salsa manufacturing factory is looking to re-locate, and a company rep is headed to the small town on a scouting mission. Honey Raye makes promises that are not to be believed in order to woo the rep to choose Fayro. In fact, Honey Raye has told them that on the very weekend of the rep’s visit, the town just happens to be having their biggest celebration of the year “Fayro Days.” So now it’s up to the citizens of Fayro to quickly make her promises a reality. Other beloved cast members include Alan Tyson, Eileen Baynes, Lee Walker, Pam Baggett, Jamey Saunders, Tate Miller, John Oglesby and Dena Walden. www.averittcenterforthearts.org for tickets.

Reading with the Mayor Statesboro opens reading nook for families in City Hall
(L-R) Georgia Southern University President Ky le Marrero; Billy Crider Jr.; Bill Crider III; Allen E. Paulson College of Engineering and Computing Dean Mohammad Davoud; and Director of Industrial Relations, Assessment and Accreditation Reinhold Gerbsch.
Mayor Jonathan McCollar and the Bulloch County Literacy Council have officially opened a new reading nook for children inside the lobby of the Statesboro City Hall to support the Council’s Bulloch READ initiative. At the opening a group of youngsters, many of whom are children of City employees, enjoyed Mayor McCollar reading a book aloud and picking out a book to take home. The Bulloch County Literacy Council encourages reading nooks in businesses to boost access to books for children and help improve preschool and early-elementary literacy in Bulloch County. The City of Statesboro’s reading nook is now one of four to debut in businesses this school year. Bulloch Solutions and Franklin Chevrolet-Buick-GMC, two of the Literacy Council’s Bulloch READ program sponsors, were the first two businesses to establish reading nooks for children in their locations, and Statesboro Urgent Care with Dr. Sreevalli Dega, added their location in March. “Promoting literacy at a young age for our most precious citizens allows us to make a big investment into their future, and not just their future, but the future of our city,” Mayor McCollar stated. Reading nooks are a great way to give children easier access to books, encourage reading, and create a literacy-rich environment for children in our community. The cozy corners offer a place for kids to look at or read books, and families may take a book home from the businesses’ reading nooks to help build their own home libraries and nooks. The Literacy Council is available to guide businesses in how to establish a reading nook. Contact Crystal Simpkins, director of early learning and literacy at Bulloch County Schools, at 912.212.8892 or by email at csimpkins@bullochschools.org. 12 statesboromagazine.com

Georgia Southern’s New Advanced Processing Research Network Launched with $1 million Gift from Crider, Inc. Georgia Southern’s Allen E. Paulson College of Engineering and Computing received a $1 million gift to develop the Advanced Processing Research Network (APRN) from Crider, Inc. of Stillmore, Georgia, a global processor of shelf-stable and fully cooked protein products. Father and son, Billy Crider Jr. and Bill Crider III (‘96) made their gift announcement at the Engineering Research Building on the Statesboro Campus surrounded by robots and robotic imaging devices. As the Criders have seen their business grow through automation technology, the need for talented engineers to program and maintain that technology is growing with it. They believe Georgia Southern holds a local opportunity to find the talent they need. “We wanted to help develop a program that will produce more of the fantastic engineering talent we’ve already been getting from Georgia Southern and help the University become a source of engineering talent for the entire Southeast,” said Bill Crider III. “When we saw the quality of the Georgia Southern graduates we were getting, we knew we had to get more from here to better enable us to compete all over the world,” added Billy Crider Jr. The Criders’ donation will provide the foundation for APRN graduate and undergraduate scholarships, more faculty support, state-of-the-art equipment and software for the growing economic sector of process automation. The APRN will equip and create an industry-class research facility, housed in the Engineering and Research Building, using the latest technology in imaging, robotics, extended reality/gaming, and IT to solve industry-related problems while managing the underlying information systems. Over the next four years, the APRN will build a first-class program through an investment in state-of-the-art technology, graduate research assistants and undergraduate scholarships, involving students and faculty from departments across the college. Plans for the APRN also include the exchange of ideas between Crider, Inc. and the University regarding processing equipment and operations, student and faculty research at the Crider facility, internships/co-op opportunities and many more joint projects. Crider, Inc. is the family-owned market leader in canned chicken as well as a major producer of canned turkey, ham, pork and beef. Their products are distributed globally as private label goods by companies such as Costco, Walmart and Publix. They serve customers in Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Peru, Chile, Columbia, Mexico and many more.

Leadership Southeast Georgia 2022 Program Visits Bulloch County Focusing On Education And Agriculture Leadership Southeast Georgia, a professional development and leadership program throughout 10 coastal counties, continued its 2022 programming in Bulloch County on March 3-4. The 26 members of the Class of 2022, regional leaders from business, professional and civic organizations, participate in a five-month course of ongoing personal and professional growth to build connections and learn collaboration skills that empower them to improve the region. The agenda for the second session emphasized education and agriculture. “Exploring education and agriculture in the same session reveals the connection the two have to each other, to this region, and to the people of coastal Georgia,” said John Lester, LSEGA 2022 site coordinator for Bulloch County. “Our hosts and the speakers at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro and those in Sylvania provided eye-opening information we can use to take on challenges facing this region and improve on what already works.” Attendees reviewed regional educational settings with various student populations, methodologies and outcomes. The region’s agribusiness and economic development, including the impact of natural disasters, were also explored, along with workforce development realities. In all areas, best practices and opportunities for increased diversity and inclusion were identified. Sponsors of LSEGA Session 2 include Dabbs, Hickman, Hill & Cannon; Maxwell-Reddick and Associates; NeSmith Construction and Land Development; Morris Bank and Lee Hill & Johnson Insurors. LSEGA 2022 Program sponsors include Evans General Contractors, Georgia Southern University, Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, M.E. Sack Engineering, Gulfstream Aerospace, and Georgia Power. O
ne specializes in bringing babies into the world at the very beginning of life, the other specializes in helping patients deal with health concerns towards the end of life. Together the married couple, Dr. Scott Lindsey Mikell and Dr. Chelsea Jones Mikell, bring their special skills and knowledge here to practice in the community they call home. The couple first got to know each other while attending medical school at the same time in Augusta. Chelsea, originally from Dahlonega, and Scott, part of the 8th generation of Mikells to call Bulloch County home, first met in a class of 190 students. “The first time I saw her, I fell in love,” said Scott. “We really got to know each other on a mission trip to Peru,” said Chelsea. “We were working at a women’s clinic there. At the time I didn’t know I wanted to do women’s health, but I fell in love with it. I like anything to do with my hands, and small details. I was good at art in high school. I’ve always had fine motor skills. I was able to use those skills working at the women’s clinic. I got to experience the excitement of welcoming a baby into the world for the first time.” For Scott, becoming a doctor was something he always wanted to do. “A career in medicine was always in the back of my mind,” he said. “Once I was able to realize my goal of becoming a doctor, it was the perfect marriage of service and science, my two passions.” Scott is board certified in family medicine. He specializes in preventive medicine as well as disease diagnosis and management for patients of all ages, and is also fellowship trained in geriatric medicine, the branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease in older people and the problems specific to aging. “The outpatient preventative care really appealed to me,” said Scott. “Dr. Randy Smith was our family doctor, the only doctor I ever had. He was my perception of what a doctor should be. He took care of my whole family. He was getting close to retirement. So when I graduated in 2018, I came straight here and joined in practice with him.” The Mikells considered other places to practice. They married April 5, 2014, graduated medical school in May 2014, and went through The Match process, a uniform system by which residency candidates and residency programs simultaneously “match” to fill first-year and second-year post-graduate training positions accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). They were matched as a couple to residencies at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C. Both completed their residencies in 2018. Chelsea’s in Obstetrics and Gynecology, a specialty in which she is board certified, and Scott’s in Family Medicine, with a fellowship in Geriatric Medicine. He is board certified in both specialties. 14 statesboromagazine.com

Chelsea joined Ogeechee OB/GYN in 2018 to work with Dr. Benjamin Oldham, and Scott went to work at Statesboro Family Practice, where Dr. Randy Smith and the other providers are known for a 42-year tradition of providing community-focused family medicine services. “Dr. Oldham retired in 2021,” said Chelsea. “So for about a six month period, I was the solo doctor at the practice. I was able to share call with Dr. Hiller and Dr. Palmer during that time to meet all the demands of deliveries and surgeries for patients. We have a wonderful staff, Tressa Cheney, our Family Nurse Practitioner and Shannon Hall, our nationally certified Physician Assistant, are excellent providers.” In February of this year, Dr. James Smalls, M.Ed., FACOG, joined the practice. He is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, and served as lead physician on the Expeditionary Medical Support System-Health Response Team culminating in the 6-week mission to Huancavelica, Peru, the trip on which the Mikells first got to know each other. Chelsea really enjoys the challenges involved in women’s health and is glad that Dr. Smalls has joined the practice. “The balance of working in the office, in delivery and in surgery, can be the happiest and the most difficult experience,” said Chelsea. “There is nothing else like it. It is such a privilege to be with women at birth. It is still a miracle to see. I tear up with patients, especially when it’s a celebration of a birth that they thought they’d never experience. And then there is great reward in helping someone get through fertility treatments or miscarriages; the most difficult time of their life.” She works at the office seeing patients and at the Women’s Pavilion at East Georgia Regional Medical Center, where she delivers babies and performs minimally invasive surgery. “There are many facets to OB/GYN: ovulation induction, fertility, reproductive conditions,” said Chelsea. “We perform minimally invasive gynecological surgery. Carbon dioxide is used to inflate the area so a camera is able to be inserted through a small incision that allows us to operate laparoscopically.” Chelsea is able to use her fine motor skills as a trained surgeon for hysterectomies, a surgery for which the Women’s Pavilion has the highest satisfaction rating in the U.S. One of the newest procedures performed is endoscopic bladder neck suspension, to treat patients with urinary stress incontinence. “We offer a full realm of services for women of all ages,” said Chelsea. “Routine and high risk pregnancies, diagnostic Pap smears, annual exams, regulating menstrual cycles, cesarean and vaginal births, office 3D ultrasound, infertility treatments, surgery, and helping women navigate menopause.” Scott’s practice is similar in providing general medicine for patients of all ages. “I really enjoy being sort of the front line window into the medical world for patients,” said Scott. “It’s especially key for older folks who often have conditions that require many specialists. I like being that provider for the patient that can help them navigate their total healthcare. Being that person for patients and their families is very rewarding. Especially in my hometown with people that helped raise me, like my teachers I had growing up, it adds a special layer of recompense.” When they’re at home with their two daughters, Helen Jean, 6, and Leah Marie, 2, the Mikells don’t usually discuss medicine. “Not unless it’s some really exciting case,” said Chelsea. Home life is more about things like Disney princesses, cookie baking and dance recitals. Or the occasional weekend trip to the sea aquarium or park. “We really enjoy our family time, and we wouldn’t be able to have our medical practices and raise our girls without the help of family close by,” said Chelsea. “Scott’s parents, retired Bulloch County State Court Judge Gary and Kim Mikell and his brother Bob and his wife Kelley, who also have two girls, have been wonderful support for us.” Scott and Chelsea are proud to be the parents of the 9th generation of Mikells to be calling Bulloch County home. “Statesboro is a great place to raise kids,” said Scott. “The girls enjoy Statesboro School of Dance, ARTsFEsT, the Averitt Center, the Farmers Market; everything is so accessible. We really enjoy being able to live and work here.” And, volunteer. Both doctors give back by supporting the Hearts & Hands Clinic and by serving various ministries at Pittman Park United Methodist Church. They both agree, “It’s a wonderful quality of life.” S May/June 2022

uilt in July 2000, East Georgia Regional Medical Center is a four-level, 149 bed acute care hospital featuring a Women’s Pavilion and an adjacent medical office building. The hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, a distinction awarded only to those healthcare facilities that maintain the highest standards of quality. East Georgia Regional Medical Center’s healthcare team consists of over 800 employees and over 100 physicians representing a wide range of specialties. The ongoing expansion of medical services and professionals, along with a major investment in technology, has firmly established East Georgia Regional‘s reputation for providing a higher medical standard. East Georgia Regional Medical Center offers a 24-hour physician-staffed emergency department, a Level II neonatal center, outpatient services including endoscopy, same day surgery and ambulatory care, a pain management center, a wound care clinic, a cardiac catheterization lab, outpatient cardiac rehabilitation, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, and state-of-the-art diagnostic procedures including digital mammography, MRI, CT, PET/CT, nuclear medicine and interventional radiology. The Women’s Pavilion provides dedicated services to women of all ages, and includes eight labor, delivery and recovery suites. Our cardiology program allows patients needing angioplasty and/or stent placement to receive these services without leaving Statesboro. Electrophysiology services and outpatient cardiac rehabilitation services are also available. These services have dramatically increased the quality of care in our community. In 2019, the Hospital received Chest Pain Accreditation by the American College of Cardiology. Also, in 2020, the Hospital was awarded Stroke Accreditation by Joint Commission. EGRMC is pleased to offer patients the Da Vinci Robotic Surgical System which is a sophisticated robotic system that offers a state-of-the-art minimally invasive option for major surgery. Our expert surgeons can perform general surgery, bariatric, gynecological and colorectal procedures. This highly specialized tool allows for less scarring and faster recovery times for patients. In Spring 2021, our Bariatric program was launched which includes both surgical and non-surgical weight loss options. An interdisciplinary team of weight loss experts including board certified physicians, nurses, dietitians and other health care professionals, are available to provide highly personalized care for all patients. Something to Smile About Dr. Jason McGibony WRITTEN BY JENNY STARLING FOSS PHOTOGRAPHY BY FRANK FORTUNE
Y
ou know the old saying “If you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours?” That’s a great depiction of the affable Dr. Jason McGibony, local dentist and lead partner in the successful and expanding practice, Dr. McGibony & Associates on Savannah Avenue. He’s channeled a lifelong desire to work in the field of healthcare into the establishment of one of Statesboro’s most innovative and flourishing dental practices. “I’ve known I wanted to be in healthcare since I was 9 or 10 years old,” said Dr. McGibony. “I’ve always wanted to help people be their best selves.” That early inclination developed as Dr. McGibony attended public school at Mattie Lively Elementary, Julia P. Bryant Elementary, Northside Middle and the old William James, through 7th grade. After that, he transferred to Portal because his mother, Jane McGibony, had gotten a job teaching business education at Portal High. “My parents came to Statesboro in 1974,” said Dr. McGibony. “My dad, Frank, was an industrial engineer and he moved the family here to open and manage the Roydon Wear plant. My mother completed her degree at Georgia Southern and accepted the teaching position at Portal.” “Portal was smaller,” said Dr. McGibony. “There I was more focused on my studies. I knew many of my teachers like Franklin Coleman; some I still
do, like Emily Fennell and Tommie Trowbridge. I guess I was just naturally into science. I was on the golf team at Portal. I also remember Brenda Steadman taught me my first biology class at William James.” Dr. McGibony credits other “good people in the area” like Drs. Lee and Martha Cain for encouraging his studies. “Martha was a professor of biochemistry at Georgia Southern at that time.” He graduated in 1989 as valedictorian of Portal High School and enrolled at Georgia Southern for his undergraduate studies. In 1994 he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with the goal of becoming a physician. He was planning to apply to the Medical College of Georgia that summer, but fate intervened. “On May 24, 1994, I was in a very bad car accident,” said Dr. McGibony. “I remember an ICU nurse was in the car behind me and came to help, keeping my airway open so I could

something to smile about breathe until the ambulance arrived. I sustained serious injuries, a ruptured spleen, a broken pelvis and several other broken bones. I was in Memorial Hospital in Savannah recovering for two weeks before I was released.” The experience affected more than Dr. McGibony’s physical health. He had already worked as a nursing aide at Bulloch Memorial Hospital while in college, and after graduation, so he knew how grueling the hours of a doctor or resident could be. “While a patient, I saw some residents at 4:00 p.m. in the afternoon, and then I would see them again at 4:00 a.m. in the morning,” he said. “The hours were not attractive.” Dr. McGibony rolled across the stage in a wheelchair to accept his diploma from Georgia Southern, he spent a month with a walking cane, participated in physical therapy, and that same summer, he began making plans to attend the School of Dentistry at the Medical College of Georgia. “I prayed about it,” he said. “I talked to my family dentist since I was 7, Dr. Dale Madson about considering dentistry as a career option. He was very encouraging and supportive of my decision to apply to dental school. I applied after graduation. I took the test in July. One week later I got a call at 8:00 a.m. asking me to come to Augusta for an interview. It turned out to be a ‘God wink’ because the administrative specialist, Judy McWhorter, mailed out the packet asking me to come the

following Friday at 8:00 a.m. After the interview process, a student usually led the tour of the school, but when time for my tour came, Dr. Carole Haynes, who had been my first interviewer, was the tour leader that day.” Dr. McGibony was accepted into the Medical College School of Dentistry and in 1999 he graduated with a Doctorate in Dental Medicine. That same year, he joined the well-established dental practice of Dr. Jack Proctor in Statesboro. In 2003, Dr. McGibony met his future wife, Dr. Michele McGibony through the orchestrations of a dental assistant. “We found out that we were both at Georgia Southern at the same time,” he said. “She is from the Baxley/Glennville area and earned her Bachelor of Science in 1993 from GSU, then left for Tuscaloosa to pursue a Ph.D. in Biochemistry. She graduated in 1997, and worked at Washington and Lee University in Virginia, then at the University of Georgia, finally in 2000, a position opened up on the faculty at Georgia Southern where she now serves as a Professor of Biochemistry and the Program Director for the M.S. program in Applied Physical Science in the College of Science and Mathematics.” The McGibonys were married on June 5, 2004, and are now the proud parents of two daughters: Skylar, 15, and Sinclair, 10. Dr. McGibony is active in the community, serving as a small group leader and on the praise team at Grace Community church, where Michele plays the keyboard. He also volunteers his skills at the Hearts & Hands Clinic. He has participated as sponsor and volunteer in fundraisers for the American Cancer Society. “I believe in giving back to the community, after all it’s where our patients live,” said Dr. McGibony. “My goal has always been to improve my patient’s quality of life, by serving in the community and by giving them the very best smile possible. Our patients are wonderful. Some were little kids when they started here and now they’re having kids. We are treating the whole family and the next generation!” Dr. McGibony has expanded his office to include associates Dr. Robert Walinchus, a specialist in dental implants and implant-related restoration; Dr. Katherine Unes, who is currently working towards a fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry; and Dr. Mandy Olsen, a Navy veteran who specializes in extractions and root canals. “My associates and I are able to cover the full spectrum of dentistry for our patients,” said Dr. McGibony. “Continuing our goal of offering the very best and most advanced technology and services available.” Dr. McGibony believes in the importance of continuing education to keep abreast of the latest techniques and products. He is certified in Invisalign® (advanced clear aligner system) and is the area’s preferred provider. He is also certified in CEREC® single visit porcelain crowns. He continues his dentistry studies at such events as The Hinman Dental Meeting, held in Atlanta. The expansion of Dr. McGibony’s practice includes new services like sleep dentistry or sedation, which helps with patients who may be fearful, and the physical addition of a new surgery suite. There the doctors of dental medicine will be developing anesthetic plans and perioperative care for patient extractions, implants and root canals. “We have just doubled the size of our offices,” said Dr. McGibony. “Being able to offer our services to even more patients through this expansion is a dream come true. I’m excited to offer our patients the very best that dentistry has to offer. I see them two or more times a year. We celebrate life with them. We support them in their health and quality of life. The longer I practice, the more I can see that circle of life. It is so rewarding to work with patients for an extended length of time. I consider it a gift never to be taken for granted.” Dr. McGibony takes nothing for granted, “I see my patients as an extension of my family. If I take care of my patients, they will take care of me, and I get great satisfaction from seeing my patients gain confidence in their smiles; in letting their personality shine.” S

WRITTEN BY JENNY STARLING FOSS PHOTOGRAPHY BY FRANK FORTUNE
In today’s world you don’t often find young families who are interested in antique furniture and 19th century history when establishing a home or new office. Mid-century modern is currently the desired “old” look in furnishings. But, thankfully for those of us who appreciate antiquities and local history, Bulloch County native Matt Mathews, and his wife Dr. Loren Stephens Mathews, have taken on two historical projects that form a continuum of family history that preserves not only the family’s, but also Statesboro’s past. One is the location of Mathew’s new law practice, Bruce, Mathews & Lavoie, Attorneys at Law, at 102 South Main Street, the former home of his great-great-grandparents. And the other location is the former home of his grandparents, built in 1963 in the Country Club area, where the couple now resides with young sons Keaton and Fisher. “A couple of things happened at the same time that let us know if we wanted to protect the family legacy for our children, we needed to make a plan,” said Mathews. After the dissolution of Edenfield, Cox, & Bruce, P.C., a law firm of longstanding which Mathews joined in 2015, Mathews and the remaining partners were looking for a location, preferably on Main Street for the newly formed firm. Around the same time, the Statesboro-Bulloch County Chamber of Commerce, which formerly occupied 102 South Main Street, originally a gift from the SmithMathews family to the Chamber, was selling the building and moving to a new location above Bulloch Telephone. A move which becomes even more ironic when you consider that Mathews’ family was first to bring telephone service to Statesboro. The telephone arm of the family started with Mathews’ great-great uncle, James L. Mathews, who along with three other Statesboro businessmen, including then Mayor James A. Brannen, founded Statesboro Telephone Company in 1901. In 1899, James L. Mathews bought the telephone exchange at Statesboro which had 25 subscribers, absorbing and merging with it a 10-mile telegraph line and short toll line. This exchange later became the Statesboro Telephone Company. Mr. Mathews was also a railroad agent for the Central of Georgia Railroad. For a time he was telegraph operator and superintendent of the shortline railroad between Dover and Statesboro. “The telephone company has had many locations throughout downtown over the years,” said Mathews. “North Main Street, South Main Street, and the plant over on Grady Street, are some of them.” Mathew’s grandfather Charlie Joe Mathews went to work at Statesboro Telephone Company after World War II and after graduating from Georgia Tech. Mathew’s grandfather was known in the family as “Chunk” and along with wife Jean, reared three sons, twins Harry (Alice) and Charlie (Susan), and the youngest, Matt’s dad, Joe (Beth). All three sons grew up working within the telephone company and at the time it was sold, Harry was serving as President, Charlie as Vice President over billing and revenue accounting, and Joe as Vice President over the commercial offices. “My family has always had a business downtown on Main Street,” said Mathews. “It was important to me to continue that tradition by purchasing my great-great grandfather’s home for our new offices.” He was referring to his great-great grandfather, Ed L. Smith, who purchased the house at 102 South Main Street in 1896. A bronze plaque installed by the Bulloch County Historical Society reads, “In 1951, Harry Smith (Ed’s son), renovated his family’s home, making a stylistic change from Victorian to Neoclassical. Built around the turn of the 20th century, the house originally featured gingerbread detailing.” Harry Smith operated H. W. Smith Jewelers at 3 South Main Street starting in 1919. Both the jewelry store and the telephone company were some of the earliest established businesses in Statesboro.
“H. W. Smith, who they called ‘Big Daddy,’ along with his wife Cora, or ‘Mommie,’ reared four daughters in the house which now holds our offices,” said Mathews. “My grandmother, Mary Eugenia “Jean” Smith Mathews, and her sisters, Joyce Smith Lovett of Statesboro, Betty Smith Dobson, and Lynn Smith Agee, who both reared their families and made their homes in Nashville, Tennessee. All four went to Vanderbilt. I’m not sure why they chose Vanderbilt, but, my grandmother Jean was the oldest, and she held the title of Miss Vanderbilt twice!” That history is now a part of the newly renovated home, where Mathews turned the Chamber’s front board room into his office, created a new board room for client meetings, removed the kitchen that the Chamber had added and made new larger offices for partners Marc Bruce and Andrew Lavoie. Semi-retired attorney Susan Cox also continues to work part time with her clients at the new firm. “We love being on Main Street. We feel like we are still apart of the important happenings in downtown Statesboro,” said Mathews. “And we especially like being on the Blue Mile, a very visible and convenient location for our clients.” When Mathews goes home at the end of the day, he is headed to the former home of his grandparents “Chunk” and Jean. “My grandmother died in 2018, and what we had known as the family home place where she had hosted all of the Christmases, Thanksgivings, birthdays, Sunday dinners, and other special occasions, ended up with my great aunt Lynn,” said Mathews, “who had the option of selling the home. My wife Loren, [a senior lecturer of Biology at Georgia Southern] and I decided to keep the home place in the family. We purchased it and we have been working on it since we moved in. Some of my grandmother’s original furnishings remain, and we have added our own touches of family history, like the arrangement of plates from grandmothers and great-grandmothers which are on the wall of the formal dining room. Loren is a talented decorator and refinishes and repurposes furniture and accessories, which has proven to be invaluable in redecorating.” When Mathews’ grandparents built the home, they were both conscious of local historical elements that could be included in the construction. “There’s a picture in the foyer of the Old City Market in Savannah, where the Savannah grey bricks were salvaged for the home’s exterior,” said Mathews. “The kitchen cabinets were made from old hand hewn church benches obtained from a Jenkins County church. The Breakfast room was also paneled with the bench wood,” said Mathews. All the local history was captured on a list of where the home’s materials originated that Mathews was able to locate.

In remodeling the home, he and Loren have added their own special touches such as incorporating an old telephone booth door into a bathroom entrance, complete with signage. The property also contains two large barns in which the couple has located many more artifacts they can use in making the home their own. “We did the outside patio ourselves,” said Mathews. “We found the brick on the property and laid it out in a herringbone pattern. It made a large space for outdoor entertaining right outside the kitchen and convenient to the family room.” The Mathews also built a stone barrier between the barn and the house that serves as a garden wall to enclose the patio area. “We have many other projects in mind,” said Mathews. “We want to bring it back closer to its original function. After Ed L. Smith bought the house at 102 South Main for his in town residence, in 1906 he purchased the property where our home is now located. It was originally the farm, hence the barns. There were close to 100 acres here with sheep in back, a hog barn and chickens. There’s old fencing all over the property that we’ve discovered. We would like to complete cleaning out and shoring up the barns and possibly get some chickens for the boys to tend.” The Mathews also plan to continue to open their home to the rest of the extended family, all three Mathews brothers, their children, and all the grandchildren.

THE CULTURE
preserving a legacy
“One of my greatest memories is the holidays here. Christmas Eve with the whole family,” said Mathews. “The adults ate around the big dining room table (which is still there), and the kids ate in the kitchen. Now Loren and I have the Mathews family Christmas here. Our home was full.” The Mathews feel blessed and proud to be able to carry on the family traditions. “Our dreams are to finish the barns; I feel the yard is about one-third of the way into shape; we want to add some farm stuff, like the chickens; get the kids to do chores regularly, and continue to work on the back of the house,” said Mathews. “Loren and I met at the University of Miami our sophomore year,” said Mathews. “She’s from Peachtree City. We married in 2006, one year after graduating. We were living in Gainesville. I was in law school, she was working on her Ph.D. in Fisheries & Aquatic Sciences. We both went to Miami because we loved the ocean and we wanted something different than going to school in Georgia. I loved the lifestyle. I had a boat there. But that lifestyle wasn’t conducive to raising a family. “When we got out of school, I worked at the largest law firm in Savannah and she taught at Georgia Southern. She fell in love with States60 statesboromagazine.com

boro and we began to look for a place that would be better for us commuting. We bought a home in Brooklet and lived there for a few years, then I joined the firm in Statesboro to be able to spend more time with my family, and less time as a junior associate working 70-80 hour weeks. When this opportunity presented itself, we knew it was where we needed to be. We have never looked back.” The fact that both of them are coastal people is evident in the décor throughout the house. A large marlin hangs prominently in the family room. Framed coral fans adorn the walls. Nautical maps and pictures of boating excursions are scattered throughout. The extended family also owns homes on Fripp Island, S.C., which the Mathews get to visit. So their love of the coast is often satisfied. “Statesboro is just a great place to raise a family,” said Mathews, “and Loren has come to really appreciate the history with me. I’m so thankful we’ve had this opportunity to preserve our family’s legacy for our sons and their future families.” S

try home flanked by peach orchards, muscadine vines, blackberry bushes, peanut fields, and other seasonal garden staples. As you pull into the driveway shaded by gigantic oak trees you will be greeted with warm Southern hospitality as well as fresh produce. Owners, Rodney and Linda Newton made Jenkins County their per-
manent home approximately ten years ago. The couple purchased Rodney’s grandparents’ property and completely renovated the 100-year-old homeplace. Rodney always knew he wanted to make the farm, which held so many precious, childhood memories his home. It took a little convincing to get Linda on-board, but she quickly grew to love the family farm. Rodney started the dream of owning a peach orchard long before he officially retired from his post over the port program with Gold Kist and later Pilgrim’s Pride. They began with a small orchard that has now grown into 15 different varieties of peaches and nectarines. Peach season begins mid-May and new varieties ripen every few weeks until the season ends late July to early August. Linda describes Rodney’s education as a peach farmer as perpetual. He studies educational articles, books and is a constant student of his craft. He was also mentored by fellow 5th generation farmer and friend, Drew Echols of Jaemor Farms in Commerce, Georgia. Linda is the face of Ogeechee Peaches. I came to know her as the “Peach Lady” long before I knew her as my friend, Linda. She is quick to let folks know Rodney is the brains and engineering behind the orchard. He is the scientist and handles all the technical details, while Linda refers to herself as the “laborer.” I would say it must be a labor of pure love. You can often find Linda doing any number of tasks in the orchard, boxing up peaches in her makeshift cold room, picking muscadines, taking calls from the local farmer’s market, or mowing the grass. She is a cute and spunky little lady, and a sun visor of some sort usually adorns her head as she manages a successful farm. She is the perfect mix of tireless energy and hyper enthusiasm. She talks fast and gets things done. Rodney can often be seen in the background with Labrador, Kirby. He is relaxed and methodical. They complement each other perfectly. One of the best qualities of a truly successful entrepreneur is their ability to bring others along for the ride. To be successful in a small community you must work together. Linda sees the big picture. She is especially generous in including everyone in her success. I asked Linda, “What is the most rewarding part of being a peach farmer?” Her reply was no surprise, “I love being outside. I love the friends I have made, and meeting people.” If you stop by that shady spot on 625 Old Louisville Rd. mid-summer, you are sure to become a friend of Linda’s, too. Stay long enough and they are liable to sit you on the front porch with a cold glass of peach tea. Ogeechee Peaches can also be found at the Statesboro Farmers Market and at Statesboro Market2Go when in season. S

How to Care for Spring Flower Bulbs after They Bloom WRITTEN BY MINDY BOYETTE,
A
Master Gardener & Guest Columnist
FTERCARE FOR TULIPS, DAFFODILS AND OTHER SPRING BULBS
Spring-blooming flower bulbs get the gardening season off to an early start. From the first crocuses and daffodils to the last tulips and alliums, it’s a show that can last from March through May. As spring eventually turns to summer, gardeners often wonder what to do about the spent flowers and fading foliage from these spring-blooming bulbs. To answer this question, you need to know if the bulbs are annuals or perennials. 72 statesboromagazine.com
May/June 2022
SPRING BULBS AS ANNUALS
Many spring-blooming bulbs return to bloom year after year. But not all of them behave this way. Tulips and hyacinths, for example, always look their best the first spring after planting. In future years, you typically get fewer flowers that are also smaller in size. To ensure a good show of color every spring, it’s best to plant fresh bulbs each fall. If you are treating your spring bulbs as annuals, you should dig them up after they finish blooming. Use a garden fork to gently lift the bulbs out of the ground and then put them in your compost pile. Removing the bulbs as well as the foliage will help minimize problems with fusarium, a common fungal disease that can affect flower bulbs. Growing spring-blooming bulbs as annuals does have some advantages. It guarantees you will always have a wonderful display of flowers. You also get the fun of putting together new color and texture combination each year. SPRING BULBS AS PERENNIALS
Early-blooming bulbs such as snowdrops, crocus, chionodoxa, scilla and daffodils will flower year after year and multiply over time. These bulbs are reliably perennial and incredibly carefree. There’s no need to deadhead, fertilize or divide them unless they become overcrowded or you want to add them to other parts of your yard. Hyacinths will usually bloom for several years, though the size of the flowers tends to gradually decline. Muscari and alliums will also return to bloom again if the soil is well-drained and stays relatively dry during summer and winter. Tulips may bloom for several years if the soil conditions are ideal. Like muscari and alliums, they require loose, well-drained soil that gets hot and dry in the summer and stays cold and relatively dry in the winter. When tulips are planted in heavy soil that holds too much moisture, the bulbs have a tendency to split. If you have ever dug up a tulip bulb after it has bloomed, you may have seen this yourself. Once a tulip bulb has split into two or more sections, it no longer has enough energy to produce a full-size blossom. Some types of tulips are less prone to splitting and more likely to rebloom. These include most species tulips, Darwin hybrids, emperor tulips and some triumph tulips. REMOVING SPENT FLOWERS
Smaller bulbs, such as crocus, muscari, scilla and snowdrops, multiply by seed as well as by bulb offsets. To encourage naturalizing, it’s best to leave the flowers attached so the seeds can ripen. If you are growing tulips and trying to get them to rebloom, snip off the flowers right after they fade. With daffodils, the flowers may be removed for aesthetic reasons, but there’s no other downside to leaving them on. The seed heads of alliums can be almost as attractive as the flowers, so you may want to leave them in place. Removing them doesn’t seem to affect the performance of the bulbs one way or another. Some alliums, including Purple Sensation, will self-sow. If you don’t want seedlings, you should remove the flower heads. HIDING OR REMOVING BULB FOLIAGE
Bulbs use their foliage to produce the energy they need to form new flowers. So, if you want your bulbs to rebloom, it’s important to leave the foliage in place until it has withered and turned yellow. When the foliage can be pulled away from the bulb with a gentle tug, it’s ready to go. The foliage of early-blooming bulbs such as chionodoxa and scilla fades away very quickly. Larger bulbs take longer; a few weeks or a few months, depending on the weather and the type of bulb. There are several ways to cope with ripening foliage. In perennial gardens, you can let the foliage of other plants hide the leaves. Hostas, daylilies, nepeta and perennial geraniums are a few of the perennials that are good at covering the spent foliage of tulips, daffodils and alliums. Another option is to plant your bulbs in a dedicated area where you won’t mind seeing the foliage. For tulips and hyacinths, this could be in a cutting
garden or even part of your vegetable garden. Alliums and daffodils are ideal for wilder areas where their ripening foliage will be out of sight. It’s also possible to dig up your spring bulbs immediately after they finish flowering and replant them – with their foliage still attached – in a holding bed. When fall comes, dig up the bulbs and move them back. Properly caring for your bulbs each year ensures that you will enjoy a full and bright garden each spring. S May/June 2022

Exploring the Attic WRITTEN BY REV. DR. JOHN WATERS
I
ventured into my attic a few days ago to investigate a small roof leak I had noticed. Thankfully, our home was constructed with a “walk-in” attic that does not require pulling down a rickety, unfolding stair ladder, which threatens to take the life of anyone who would dare to climb it. As a younger man, I would have gracefully floated up and down such a contraption like angels ascending and descending on Jacob’s ladder, but those days are long gone for me now. So, with a grateful heart, I walked into my attic to see where the leak might be coming from. But as I scanned the open attic space, I saw several boxes, storage bins, and even a Christmas tree. An unused bed frame was propped against the wall, a footlocker of my daughter’s was in front of me, and containers of various shapes and sizes were stacked together like a poorly constructed pyramid. There was no rhyme or reason for what earned a place in the attic or not; most boxes contained items from previous days or mementos from special moments that, for some reason, we felt needed to be kept. That’s why attics are not just storage spaces; they are repositories of memories, holding objects and pieces from our past as mile markers of our lives. To be honest, you could spend considerable time in an attic, reliving the stories and moments captured in those old boxes. And maybe that’s why very few of us clean out our attics, because holding on to those items connects us to our past and allows us to walk down memory lane. Remembering our past prepares us for the future, and we are better able to stretch into the days ahead once we remember how rooted we are in the past. 74 statesboromagazine.com
May/June 2022
Throughout the Scriptures, God called and led His people into uncomfortable situations, unknown territories, and uncharted waters. But as He stretched them into the future, He always seemed to point them to the past. The faithfulness they observed from God in the past provided a firm foundation of faith for what God would do in the days to come. After all, if God had been trustworthy in days gone by, shouldn’t they expect Him to be the same in what was to come? One particular example is found in the story David, the shepherd boy who would become king. As a young teen, David stood in front of the giant Goliath, preparing to fight him on behalf of Israel’s army. Many thought David didn’t stand a fighting chance against the Philistine warrior, given the advantage of size, armor, and experience that Goliath had over him. But most of us know how it worked out. With a sling shot as a rocket launcher, David hurled a smooth stone straight into Goliath’s head, and the victory was his. Prior to the show down, however, we get a glimpse in the shepherd boy’s confidence, when he says, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine,” (1 Samuel 17:37). Because God had delivered David in times past, he felt confident that he could trust God in what was ahead. If past behavior is the best predictor of future performance, then David understood this about God long before business schools started quoting that phrase. Do you have any memories of God’s faithfulness in times past? As you rummage around the memories of your life, do you see times when God stood with you? Were there dark days and difficult moments made bearable by the Lord’s presence? Did He give you an anchor for the storm, or a reminder of His grace? If David had an attic, he probably kept that sling shot in there. Maybe he also had that lion’s paw and a bear’s tooth. And can’t you see him pulling out Goliath’s sword every once and awhile, remembering that fateful day and reliving that defining moment? Let me encourage you to stumble around the attic of your heart and memories, too. Unpack those boxes that remind you of God’s faithfulness and presence. Sit down in that dimly lit, dusty space and relive the moments when God strengthened you, sustained you, and held you close. Find a reason to explore your attic on a regular basis, whether you have a leak in the roof or not. S

eorgia is a special place. A ride home at midnight through the back roads of South Georgia... You put it on “cruise.” You find a station that plays Willie. And you lean back with a solid moon, filling long stretches of fields in their winter’s sleep. I move through small towns --- Guyton, Egypt. Colonial homes are guarded by tall sentinel pines. Orchards of pecan trees embrace the night. To my right, in ballet pose, there is a gathering of baby doe. They have been grazing on the edge of the woods. Darkness offers them contentment. Quiet complements their chorus. This venture for them is fun. I chose not to understand how any one of them can fill a gunsight and be brought “to Earth.” In the distance, a night train crossing the road initiates red lights blinking. I watch the “wagons” roar by, coming from someplace I don’t know. Headed for somewhere I don’t know. But at this very minute, in the night of South Georgia, we are companions. I move further. I pass mobile homes tucked into pastoral corners of God’s Earth. I know in the spring this cor76 statesboromagazine.com

ner comes alive with the corsage beauty of wisteria, of azaleas, of dogwoods. Tonight it is lighted gently by moonbeams. And it is beautiful. This is Georgia Land. Asleep in these homes gracing my country arcade are the folks who will rise early, very Southern, and who will slip quietly outside while children remain in that easy cache of slumber. They will walk to the edge of the road and look both ways. They will take in the frost-covered earth. They’ll notice a different car sitting at a neighbor’s house. “Might be Joe’s son in for a day or two. He’s been expecting him anytime now.” Soon the aroma of coffee will fill the kitchen. Maybe a fire in a pot-bellied stove will roar warmth. Soon, children will be awakened gently --- “Time for school. You have thirty minutes before the bus comes. So get a move on.” I glide into another hamlet. A rent-a-sign’s glow is the only thing alive. It says, “We now have videos at Jimmy’s.” A few miles into town I see Jimmy’s. It is a service station. The final minutes are filled with the moon again bouncing off trees and scattering patterns across the road. I drive through those patterns as a pilot moves his craft through thin graceful clouds. I feel bathed and good. Soon the lights of my town blink far down the road. Willie is singing “Angels Flying too Close to the Ground.” This Georgia Land is special. These Georgia folk are quite special. I have experienced the beauty of being alone, with my thoughts, back roads, the moon, and Willie.... S
