Georgia Southern University ROTC wins fourth MacArthur Award The U.S. Army Cadet Command at Fort Knox, Kentucky, has announced Georgia Southern University’s Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program is one of eight schools to receive the prestigious MacArthur Award for the 2015-2016 school year. This is the second consecutive MacArthur Award for the Eagle Battalion and is the fourth overall since 2009. The Eagle Battalion previously received the award in 2009, 2010 and 2015. Georgia Southern University was selected as the top program from the 6th Brigade Army ROTC, which includes 39 programs from six states and Puerto Rico. In conjunction with the Gen. Douglas MacArthur Foundation, Cadet Command, which oversees eight Brigades comprised of 275 senior Army ROTC programs nationwide, presents the award to the top program from each of those eight Brigades. MacArthur Awards are based on overall performance, National Order of Merit List standings and cadet retention rates. The 2016 MacArthur Award is just the latest in a long list of recent accolades for the Eagle Battalion. Georgia Southern has commissioned more Army nurses than any program nationwide, has consistently exceeded its STEM mission, and is home to one of the largest non-military college ROTC programs in the country. In January, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for the Eagle Battalion’s new state-of-the-art facility. The Battalion’s Ranger Challenge team won the state competition in October 2016, and finished second at the Brigade level in January.

The Georgia Science Teachers Association (GSTA) selected Tamra Lamb as its 2017 Georgia Science Teacher of Promise at the elementary school level. Lamb, a fifth-grade science and math teacher at Mattie Lively Elementary School was honored by GSTA at a special awards banquet on February 3rd, at the Atlanta Evergreen Conference Resort as part of the annual GSTA Science Conference. Lamb received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in early childhood education from Georgia Southern, where she made a strong impression on the faculty. She was actually nominated for the Georgia Teacher of Promise Award by one of her former professors, Dr. Katie Brkich, in the university’s Teaching and Learning Department. Lamb and other nominees had to complete an application process which included essay responses about how they would improve science education in their schools and school system, details about recent science lessons, and description of unique or creative lessons they have developed based on Georgia’s science standards. Nominees also had to submit three letters of recommendation. Applications were evaluated by a panel of judges using a rubric. The GSTA’s Teacher of Promise awards recognize science teachers with one to three years of experience who demonstrate exceptional promise. The elementary, middle and high school recipients each received a $750 prize. Kia Mills of AR Johnson Health Science and Engineering Magnet School in Richmond County was GSTA’s middle school-level winner, and Elizabeth Downey of Allatoona High School in Cobb County was the high school-level winner.

They will spend one weekend a month in surrounding counties learning about topics that affect the region such as healthcare, education, economic development and transportation.
SEB Middle School Sixth Grader Wins Spelling Bee for Second Year Eric Lim, 11, a sixth-grade student at Southeast Bulloch Middle School, is Bulloch County’s Spelling Bee champion for the second year in a row. Thirteen participants from the county’s 14 public and charter schools spelled for a record 37 rounds, 30 of which were between Lim and his remaining opponent, Elkem Gato of Brooklet Elementary School. After Gato incorrectly spelled rendezvous, Lim spelled fraulein and mukhtar correctly to claim the championship. The annual Bulloch County Spelling Bee is sponsored by the local chapter of the Georgia Association of Educators (GAE). Lim will advance to the District 8 Spelling Bee at Savannah State University on February 25. Gato will serve as an alternate should Lim be unable to attend. The winner of the District 8 Spelling Bee will advance to the GAE State Spelling Bee on March 17, at Georgia State University and possibly the Scripps National Spelling Bee in June. Lim is the son of Sungkyun Lim and Jee Yoon Byun, of Statesboro. Gato, 10, is the son of Worlanyo Eric Gato and Vivian Gato, and the brother of 2015 Bulloch County Spelling Bee Champion Warlanyo Gato. Lim and Gato received trophies and $100 and $50 cash prizes respectively. Each of the other school-level winners received medals. School-level winners were the following: Xavier Deckard, Julia P. Bryant; Valerie Rodriguez, Langston Chapel Elementary; Na’Quoyah Crawford, Langston Chapel Middle; Juliette Brannen, Mattie Lively Elementary; Reya Johnson, Mill Creek Elementary; Michael Hall, Nevils Elementary; Briar Lee, Portal Elementary; Shaneisha Coleman, Portal Middle; Victor Lee, Sallie Zetterower Elementary; Abigail Cave, Statesboro STEAM (Charter School); and Ruby Devoe, Stilson Elementary. Chase Page was the winner for William James Middle School, but he did not participate in the county competition. Judges for this year’s Spelling Bee were Dr. Glayvera Richmond, Marsha Twiggs, Leah Crooke and Carolyn Smith. The guest pronouncer was America Minc of Georgia Southern. This year’s GAE Bulloch County Spelling Bee Committee was Penny Oglesby, Chianti Culver, Sherry Thompson, and Ardrena Jackson.
Statesboro Jaycees Receive Gift to Establish Emergency Relief Fund D & R Car Care donated $500 to the Statesboro Jaycees on Thursday, February 16 to help establish the organization’s community emergency relief fund. D&R ran a two-month promotion in which they donated 20% of the proceeds from the cost of any service if the customer mentioned the organization when they brought their vehicle in. The Statesboro Jaycees’ October monthly meeting fell just days after Hurricane Matthew left thousands without power and water, damaged D&R Car Care co-owner Jodi Drighomes and businesses and strained gers presents Statesboro Jaycees non-profit agencies throughout the president Alex Brown with a $500 area as a result of the urgent needs of gift to help establish an emergency relief fund the organization can build so many residents. to use in urgent times of need in the “After Hurricane Matthew, community. the Jaycees were so eager to help this community get back on its feet, but we didn’t have the resources to act quickly,” said Statesboro Jaycees President Alex Brown. “All of our community service projects require time and planning because the organization simply doesn’t have funds available to quickly stroke a check or purchase supplies when disaster strikes.” The Jaycees held a canned food drive in the wake of the storm to help restock the Statesboro Food Bank which had been heavily relied on by those who were without power for several days and lost all the food in their home. But that project, while helpful, wasn’t good enough for the Jaycees because it took weeks to give back to the food bank. The group wanted to have the ability to act and to do so immediately. “While we may not have deep pockets, we do have a fantastic group of members who really have a heart for this community and are very willing to serve,” said Brown. “Establishing and growing this fund will give us another resource we can use to give back when our community needs us.”
William James Receives STEM Grant William James Middle School will receive a $2,000 grant from the Northrop Grumman Foundation to help support the school’s science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) lab. WJMS was one of 20 middle school semifinalists nationwide to receive the grant, after competing in the Foundation’s $100,000 Fab School Labs makeover contest. “We will use the $2,000 to upgrade our 3D printing lab and add a hydroponics lab with an Arduino Garden Robot to our outdoor classroom area,” said Amy Smith, WJMS’s STEM teacher. Smith and WJMS appreciate the local and statewide support for their efforts to secure the grant. Nearly 200 public middle schools from throughout the country participated in the Fab School Labs contest. The winning schools received grants of up to $100,000. The five winning schools, chosen by popular online voting are Cottonwood Valley Charter School in Socorro, New Mexico; Del Dios Academy of Arts and Sciences in Escondido, California; Downtown College Prep Alum Rock Middle School in San Jose, California; Harriet Tubman Village Charter School in San Diego, California; and UP Academy Leonard – Lawrence, Massachusetts. Written by Jenny Starling Foss | Photography by Frank Fortune
As a child, Carolyn Beasley Ethridge ran around barefoot playing hop scotch on the dirt road by her family’s farm near Portal. In the fields surrounding the family home, she had dirt clod fights with her brothers and made mud pies with her two sisters. Often there were extended family gatherings on weekends around tables laden with barbeque or fried fish and hushpuppies. Meals were accompanied by the West uncles strumming and tuning their guitars while everybody gathered around to hear the close harmony of their mom and her
brothers. Ethridge’s childhood was one of Saturday night family sings and church-going on Sunday mornings. She attended public school in Portal for 11 years. The Beasley’s house was first on the school bus line in the mornings and the very last in the afternoons. After school and on weekends, the five Beasley children didn’t “go out” like their peers or venture to Statesboro to movies and the SkateR-Bowl, instead they worked in their daddy’s garden, picking peas and butter beans to shell
for their mama to “put up.” “That kept us out of a lot of bad environments,” Ethridge said. While life on the farm surrounded by family kept the children from bad influences, it also kept them cloistered. Ethridge yearned for a larger life. She found out in the 11th grade that she could transfer to Statesboro High for her senior year. Statesboro High offered classes in business, and Ethridge already aspired to be a banker in a big city like Atlanta. A transfer was March/April 2017 • 39

made and one of her relatives, Margie Beasley Williams, picked her up each morning at the house and took her to Statesboro to finish high school. “I was greatly influenced by Carolyn Akins, my 12th grade accounting teacher,” Ethridge said. “Teresa Howell was my business teacher. They both gave me encouragement. I knew I wanted to be a banker. I just love numbers. In Office Machine class I won the championship with my calculator!” After graduating from SHS, Ethridge enrolled in Georgia Southern College to study Business Administration and Management. “I went to GSU, putting myself through school, working at Sarah’s Place under Bobbie Lamb,” Ethridge said. 40 • Statesboro Magazine
It was at Georgia Southern that Ethridge met and began dating John Kopotic, a civil engineering student at Southern Tech. After two years, Ethridge transferred to Kennesaw State and got a job as a teller at Georgia Federal Bank. When Kopotic graduated Southern Tech, the couple moved to St. Simons Island where he began work with Whaley Construction and she became assistant to the president at the Coastal Bank of Georgia. Ethridge’s dream of becoming a bank executive was becoming a reality. When Coastal Bank bought Georgia Federal Bank, Ethridge, vice president Michael D. Hodges, and senior lender Donna Gowen Poe left to form The First Bank of Brunswick, which was the pre-
cursor to Ameris Bank in Glynn County. As Kopotic’s career advanced, the couple moved to Athens, Georgia, where their daughter, Kasey Kopotic DeMott, was born. Ethridge worked for Bank South as Assistant Manager in Athens. After three years, she was ready to move back to Statesboro. “I still wanted to be bank president after Kasey was born,” Ethridge said. “In 1994 we moved back to Statesboro and I stayed at home with her. My focus was on my child and my family. When we were ready to build a house, Sheryl Burnsed talked me into coming to work at Eagle Bank, when Andy Williams was the president.” Ethridge had come full circle back to her home and extended family while advancing in the career of her dreams. During this period, while she was working at Eagle Bank, Ethridge became pregnant with twin boys. She was confined to bedrest for five months and her sons, Sam and Jim, were safely delivered in Bulloch County. Ethridge was a stay-at-home Mom for a period of time, but she wanted to return to banking and the career she loved. Kopotic was working with the Georgia Department of Transportation at the time and the family had transferred to Jesup. “I had great friends and guidance during that time,” said Ethridge. “I went back to The First Bank of Brunswick and was branch manager at the Sea Palms and Frederica location. They worked to accommodate me with my young children. I worked four days a week, but completed my work within that timeframe. I learned human resources, marketing, and managerial duties.” Ethridge also learned that she enjoyed making a positive difference in the lives of the people she came into contact with daily. “I really enjoy helping people,” Ethridge said. “In banking you start with a client, when you help them, you help their whole family. You become connected. It is about the relationships, about connectivity, and about giving back.” Ethridge became engaged in the St. Simons Island community graduating from Leadership Glynn and also graduating from the Georgia Banking School and the Southeastern School of Commercial Lending. In 2004, Ethridge again returned to Bulloch County to work at Farmers & Merchants Bank
as Branch Manager, Commercial Lender, and Vice President. That same year she married Bulloch County native Mike Ethridge. “This area is the best place to raise kids. There is a quality of life here that I took for granted when I was younger and wanted bigger horizons,” she said. “I have come full circle again. During this journey, I have prayed about it all. I believe that if you do what you can to help others, work hard and appreciate all your opportunities, then the doors to your dreams will open. It will happen at the right time.” Ethridge also believes early challenges in life do not have to determine one’s destiny. “I never gave up when life brought me challenges,” she said. “When I had my children, family came first. I believe you will be recognized for your efforts when the time is right.” In 2010, when Jan Tankersley left the Bulloch County Commission to run for state representative, County Commission Chairman Garrett Nevil approached Ethridge about filling her seat. “I didn’t know Garrett at the time,” Ethridge said, “but Emily Nevil was my typing teacher in high school. Garrett told me that he and Miss Emily were aware of my community involvement and he asked me to serve on the commission. I served six-and-a-half years and really enjoyed working with so many great people,” she said. Ethridge especially enjoyed turning around those citizens who had issues with the commission. “I think a positive attitude is really important in approaching all things. I like to look at challenges as opportunities. I can now appreciate all the challenges that leaders and citizens face in our communities,” said Ethridge. In 2016, the end of Ethridge’s term as a county commissioner coincided with her appointment as the first female banking market president in Statesboro history. Ethridge is now the market president for Renasant Bank, which coincidentally is located in the former Eagle Bank building on South Main Street. Renasant, one of the South’s most successful banking companies, has as its watchword – perseverance. A perfect hallmark for Ethridge, who has come full circle once again, and this time, she’s at the top living her dream. S

The Good Science Behind ‘Eating A Live Frog’ If you’re like me, you live and die by todo lists. I don’t have just one list, either. I have a list with tasks that are waiting to be put on my “now” list, a list with tasks that are waiting on somebody else, and a list with tasks that are meant to be done someday or just whenever. I have lists for specific projects, lists for home and work, and lists that will shoot me little reminders to make sure I remember them. And while I regularly review these lists and give them my full attention, I don’t always give them the thing they require most: actual work. Finishing these list items requires focus, determination and a hefty dose of willpower, which can be difficult to muster, especially for the most odious tasks. In psychological circles, the issue of willpower
is known as “ego depletion,” or more simply, the ability to exercise “self-control.” Janie H. Wilson, Ph.D., professor of Psychology at Georgia Southern, says the latest research shows that each of us have a limited “well” of self-control that we draw from each day, and as the day wears on and we exercise our self-control, we lose it. “It could be exercising, it could be studying, it could be having an argument with your significant other — it could be anything,” she said. “Anything that makes you have to exercise selfcontrol will remove some of it.” In short, our self-control is like a muscle, and just as we can exhaust it, we can also rebuild it with rest and strengthen it with exercise. And if we’re going to tackle the to-do lists that confront us all, we’re going to have to understand how to work within our self-control limits.
Working around your weakness It’s important to plan your day around your well of self-control in order to be productive. Mark Twain famously said, “Eat a live frog first thing in the morning, and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.” Far from being a suggestion to ingest an amphibian, Twain simply advocated doing a particularly unpleasant task first thing and accomplishing our lesser tasks afterward. Wilson says research supports the idea. We generally start the day with a full well of self-control, and planning our most difficult tasks in the morning will help ensure we’ll be able to exercise the willpower to get them done. Refilling your well While the loss of self-control throughout the day is inevitable, Wilson says there are ways to give ourselves a little bit back throughout the day. “Taking a nap or eating a meal, taking a break, meditating — there are so many ways to give it back to yourself,” she said. “You can kind of reboost your self-control by doing those kinds of things.” Recent studies suggest that negative interactions can deplete our self-control, and that conversely, things like humor and positive interactions can replenish our self-control. Plan these kinds of breaks and interactions in your day and you might just find yourself more productive. Building your willpower Beyond the short-term fix of replenishing our self-control throughout the day, Wilson says we can actually work to build up and increase our personal limits of self-control. “We can change who we are,” she said. “We can increase our own personal well of self-control. It’s like exercising a muscle.” Wilson says a great time to practice exercising our self-control is on the weekend or on vacation, when we don’t need as much of it to successfully get through the day. On these days, she said we can practice things like writing with the opposite hand or working on our posture when sitting on the couch. In addition, Wilson says that better sleep, nutrition and exercise can add to our well of selfcontrol in the long run. Managing willpower is a daily — and lifelong — task. It fuels our successes and is exhausted in our failures. But in understanding it, we can plan our days around it. And while it won’t make eating that frog any more pleasant, it’ll sure make getting through the rest of the day — and getting through those lists — much more enjoyable. March/April 2017 • 59

What You Believe Can Determine What You Are I have been pondering over a statement I read several years ago: What you believe is more important than what you have or who you are. Can that be true? A terrible disease that affects many young ladies is called anorexia nervosa. It makes its victims believe they are fat even when they are not. You may remember that the very talented, popular singer, Karen Carpenter, died of this disease. In essence, the victims starve themselves, believing they are too fat even when they are only skin and bones. No matter how much family members and doctors point out how thin the victim is she still believes and says, “I’m too fat!” and often dies of starvation. What you believe is more important than who you are. When we lived in Kentucky, Adolph Rupp was coach of the University of Kentucky Wildcats basketball team. He tried an experiment one year. Coach Rupp began to refer to his center, Cotton Nash, as his All-American Center.
He later confessed that Cotton was an average player, but as his coach continued to call him his All-American Center, Cotton began to believe it. So did the press. Would you believe that Cotton Nash was voted All-American his sophomore, junior, and senior years? What you believe can determine what you are. Years ago I read a news report of a man on a railroad crew who was accidently locked in a refrigerated box car. When he realized he was locked in he began to yell for help. Then he began banging on the door. No one heard him. He began to get cold, and with a knife began to carve his thoughts on the wooden floor of the box car. “I’m freezing,” “It’s so cold my body is getting numb,” “If I could just go to sleep.” The next morning his body was discovered in the car, and every physical sign indicated that the man had frozen to death. But what puzzled the investigators was that the refrigeration system was not on, it was broken. The temperature did not fall
below 55 degrees. It was not the inner cold but his belief that it was cold that killed him. Howard Hughes was a very wealthy American, one of the richest men in the world. You may remember that he was obsessed by fears that terrified him, and he spent his later years hidden away in a dark room. What you believe is more important than who you are or what you have. I am so grateful that I grew up in a home and in a church where I was taught to believe that God made me and that His Son Jesus loved me. I was told that I was important, gifted, and had a wonderful future, basking in the love of God. I believed it! I still do! But that is not true just about me, it’s true about everybody. God doesn’t create any flops. He loves you. And we are so fortunate in Statesboro to have so many wonderful churches where we can experience the Love of God and the love of people. God will help you see how important you are to Him. March/April 2017 • 61

Tapestry It was a cold winter’s night in November of 1942. My mother and father were in the cellar as dad fueled the furnace with coal to push steam heat to the radiators throughout our home. We lived on 2741 Morris Road, Ardmore, Pennsylvania. Dad had just returned from a five day business trip and seemed different to me for some reason. Just a few minutes passed when he called up the cellar stairs. “Bertha, would you come here for a minute?” I went to the kitchen for a glass of milk. It was then as I walked by the cellar door I heard Dad say, “Bertha, I have no love to give as a husband or father. I am leaving tonight and will not be back.” At nine years of age, it did not soak in
as to what was happening. Sitting in the living room sipping that glass of milk I watched my daddy walk out the front door, looking back and saying, “I’m sorry, Bubby.” For the next 45 years, I would see my father twice. I was 57 when I walked into his doublewide, low resting on the edge of Maryland, on my way to NYC to read with Ruby Dee as requested by Georgia Southern’s Mical Whitaker. Liz, my father’s third wife was warm and cordial and invited me to spend the night. There was no tenseness or throat clearing between my father and me. It was a cordial meeting of two grown men. Liz pleasantly inquired about my life to which
I shared easily the activity of Rich, Deanne and Mark. My father, a bit stoic, would offer eye contact as I filled his den with his son’s life developed from the moment he closed the door on that winter’s night. Now, sitting before me, was a shell of the man I remembered. An Italian who was handsome; well built. A man blessed with a grand personality. A natural salesman who was as comfortable spreading the word of God to the bums in the boweries of Philadelphia as being a top seller for the John Mansfield’s Insulation Company. An undeniably confident man. Early the next morning Liz quietly filled me in on the reality of my father. “He lives a defeated life. He is spent. Sits and watches nothing but faith healing preachers. He is pleasant but much disengaged. We stay together knowing if we split, there would be no one to turn to.” My dad’s second encounter was a bit of a shock. He accepted my daughter’s wedding invitation. There was no room for discussion. Deanne was determined to send her grandfather an invitation. Liz later told me when Dad open the envelope he tossed it aside with no comment. “That’s when I looked at him and announced, ‘Ernie I am going in honor of your son,’” she said. He came. He saw. He felt. He was pleasant to his three grandchildren, but very uncomfortable. He was taken aback with the warmth of the rehearsal dinner and the reception where a loving ensemble of friends celebrated our daughter’s wedding day. Late that evening I stopped by his motel room. Liz and I walked to Shoney’s for a late cup of coffee. She teared up as she responded to the celebration of family and friends. “I am touched Rickie. You have done well.” I walked her to the room. Gave her a hug and said “I’ll be by in the morning for breakfast before you leave.” Liz smiled and gave me a strong hug. At nine the next morning, I tapped on their door. No response. I asked a housekeeper if she would allow me to check. When she opened the door, the room was neat as a pin. Beds made. Towels and wash cloths in place. It was pristine. It was if it had never happened. I stood in that empty space; and it washed over me. I had been abandoned again. But strangely, there was no hurt. Four decades had passed and I had become a father myself. I was a Dad of three wonderful children. All grown. All university graduates. I had proudly walked my only daughter down the aisle 12 hours earlier. And I finally realized the truth as I stared into that vacant room. Anyone can be called a father, but it takes a real man to make a great Daddy. March/April 2017 • 65
