earnest. If you are like most of today’s brides, you work fulltime during the day which leaves only evenings and weekends for planning your fairy-tale day. Trying to find time to plan for the ceremony, the dresses, the venues, the musicians, the food, the cake, the tuxedos, the rings, the flowers, etc., can take its toll on the most organized bride and groom. At Statesboro Magazine, we want to help you have an easy and enjoyable wedding planning experience. With this our third edition of Weddings by Statesboro Magazine, we’ve put together another wonderful area wedding guide designed to assist in making your wedding day an affair to remember. In this issue, we also highlight four recent area weddings and share details from the brides and grooms about the extraordinary touches that made their weddings unique. There’s information inside about current trends in floral design, engagement rings, wedding gowns, tuxedos, and gifts, plus photographer Paige Williams joins us to share professional tips on capturing the perfect wedding photos. If you feel a Bridezilla moment coming on, thumb through our Bridal Resource Guide where you’ll find the region’s expert wedding related vendors ready to assist you in making these the halcyon days leading up to your magical wedding. Best Wishes!

About the Cover Better Together - “Yeah, we’ll look at the stars when we’re together. Well, it’s so much better when we’re together.” The lyrics of Jack Johnson’s song “Better Together” formed the perfect wedding theme for Whitney Leah Skeeters and Yancey Collin Mooney. They’re pictured here dancing the night away last April at the Garden of the Coastal Plain. Captured for eternity by photographer Marsha Hagan.

Tell us about any significant or traditional family custom observed at your ceremony or reception: The theme of our wedding was Better Together, because to us, everything is just better together. Together with each other and together with our friends and family. We couldn’t imagine doing this without them, and their love and support was truly the highlight of this experience. We tried to infuse each decision, from the driftwood cross that greeted guests as they entered the church to the late-night PBJ snack as the reception wound down, with homage to memories shared with the people we love. We both grew up in Statesboro, and decided to use as many local vendors as possible. We said our vows at Pittman Park United Methodist Church, the church we both grew up in and where my mother and John Lee were married in 1991. I wore my great-aunt’s pearls and my grandmother’s blue garter. When our mothers were escorted down the aisle, the string trio played “Here Comes the Sun”, which is what Yancey’s mother walked down the aisle to when she married his father 38 years ago. Two of our best friends read during the ceremony, along with Yancey’s youth pastor. My cousins also read from the Bible and Yancey’s cousins served as ring “bears”. Our search for the perfect reception venue ended when we were at The Garden of the Coastal Plains and looked down to find a commemorative brick beneath our feet honoring John’s mother and father, Dot and Winfield Lee, and also for a childhood friend. The Gardens ended up being the perfect backdrop for the rustic, hand-painted signs made by my aunt, Beth Sands. We cut our cake with a Summerall Guard sword from my greatuncle Bidd Sands from when he was captain of the drill unit at the Citadel in 1962. Anyone who has known Yancey for a while would recognize his cake topper – a fondant replica of a bleached out Braves cap he wore for nearly a decade, in all its faded glory. I first met our reception band when interviewing them for a story for the Statesboro Magazine a year earlier. Each guest left with a Paul’s Angel, a tribute to my great-aunt and uncle and anyone who has been touched by cancer. Brandi Colson of Savannah Avenue Salon helped me prep for the day; she has been cutting my hair for 15 years. My mother designed,

Tell us about any significant or traditional family custom observed at your ceremony or reception: When my Grandmother passed away, all I asked to keep of hers was a cross necklace.
The Sir
Shop
She always wore a cross around her neck and had several, however, when I went to sort through her jewelry, there were no crosses left. In a separate cardboard box, however, I found the necklace I wore in my wedding. It was a locket I had given her when I was young. It still had a photo of me inside and attached to the same necklace, was a small cross I knew she left just for me. Wearing that necklace, I knew she was with me as I walked down the isle. Tell us about any special involvement by your or your husband’s family Travis and I were married by my Uncle Bill Patton, who is a minister, and to conduct the ceremony, he used my grandfather’s Bible I inherited that is over 50 years old. Gage, our 11 year old beagle was a groomsmen and was escorted down the isle. “I had the Best Wedding Ever ...and Now my Secret can be yours!”
“Like every bride-to-be, I wanted my wedding to go off without a hitch and be really memorable and fun for me and all of my guests. I am so thankful we chose Fairy Tale Tents and Party Rentals for our special day! We would like to personally thank Tammy for the outstanding service she and her staff provided at our wedding in October. We have continued to hear wonderful review’s from so many guests on how beautiful everything looked. We were so impressed with Fairy Tale Tents and feel fortunate that we found you for our special day. You were amazing to work with all the way from the important planning stages to the actual event. It is people like you who raise the bar in the service industry by exceeding a customer’s expectations. I truly appreciate your attention to detail and thought the products and services provided by Fairy Tale Tents were even better than I could have imagined. Everything was truly magical! We would refer Fairy Tale Tents to any bride and groom hopeful to have the best! Thanks again from the bottom of our hearts!” Warmest Regards, Heather & Toby Collins

L
aura Leigh McCook and John Berl Thompson, III (Trey) were united in marriage on May 18, 2013. Laura is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Len McCook of Statesboro. Trey is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Thompson of Newnan. The ceremony was held at First Baptist Church in Statesboro at six o’clock in the evening. Dr. John Waters and Dr. H. William Perry officiated the ceremony, and Mrs. Pat Chandler was the wedding director. The theme of the wedding was Southern Elegance. Laura wore a Casablanca Couture Wedding Gown from Main Street Bridal of Statesboro. The lace wedding gown had beaded ivory lace appliques on ivory tulle
over crystal silk satin and flowed to a tiffany length scalloped train. The cathedral length veil consisted of ivory crystal tulle with glass crystal pearls on the scalloped edge and throughout the veil. The bride carried a handtied bouquet consisting of white hydrangeas, blush spray roses, white garden cabbage roses, and seeded eucalyptus created by The Florist of Statesboro. The bride carried inside the bouquet a small Bible given to her by her parents when she was born. Laura chose for “something old” her mother’s wedding bouquet-holder trimmed in lace, “something borrowed” her grandmother’s pearl ring, “something blue” her garter handmade by her cousin, and “something new” her wedding dress.
The bridesmaids wore elegant floorlength tiffany chiffon cobalt blue dresses with complimentary bouquets to the bride. The two flowergirls, cousins of the bride, wore ivory satin dresses with tulle overlay with satin pink sashes handmade by the bride’s aunt. The groom and groomsmen wore traditional black tuxedos with ties. The bride was given in marriage by her father. Mrs. Shelia McKee provided the music as pianist and organist. Cousins of the groom sang “Amazing Grace” by Newton and “How Beautiful” by Paris. The altar was decorated with a large central arrangement of pinks and whites, flanked by votive candleholders and various greenery. Following the ceremony the bride’s parents hosted a reception at the Forest Heights Country Club which was beautifully decorated with greenery, flower arrangements, and centerpieces on each table. As guest arrived Dr. Michael Braz played the piano. The first dance was to “Unchained Melody” by the Righteous Brothers. The bride’s cake, a square four-tier vanilla cake with buttercream icing, was adorned with pink roses covering the top and then cascading down one side. The groom’s cake was a two-tier chocolate “Georgia Tech” theme cake. Both were created by Emily Henley of Brooklet. As wedding favors, Teracie Alderman Deloach of Teracie Jane Wedding and Events created an elegant and fun “candy table” for the guests. As a surprise to Laura at the end of the evening, Trey sang to Laura the song “Earth Angel” by the Penguins. The night ended as the couple was driven away in a rumble seat convertible. The couple honeymooned in St. Lucia. The couple live in Newnan. Laura is an attorney and recently opened the Thompson Office of Law in Newnan. Trey attends pharmacy school at Mercer in Atlanta and will graduate in 2015.

Let us pamper you in rustic elegance...
Confetti
The brighter the better. Today’s brides express themselves with confetti colors in bright combinations for lots of pizzazz. Primary colors in a rainbow of hues are used together for the biggest impact.
Grand Lodge
This floral theme is a mix of rustic and chic. Think silver candlesticks or glass votives on a natural wood base with vines, leafs, Spanish moss and glam flowers intertwined for an elegant look.
Revival
Vintage is the theme that encompasses Grandmother’s and Mother’s weddings keepsakes and family traditions creating a theme of beauty and romance that surpasses the ages. A glamorous blend of both vintage and modern.
Aquaculture
Bold blues, purples, and aquamarines provide soothing and intense colors that reflect the calm and cooling effects of water. Peacock feathers and blue hydrangeas are natural highlights.

The Hottest New Wedding Gown
MBS
Romance is in the air as brides and grooms across the nation return to softer, sweeter weddings with an emphasis on family traditions and meaningful details. The same heartfelt attention can be seen in the designs of wedding gowns on run ways and in stores this season. Six hot fashion trends have emerged, with the gowns in the following categories getting the most attention.
Short & Sweet
A short wedding dress is great especially if you plan to dance all night. Ankle length is also making a comeback from the peak of its mid-century appeal. Gowns can be found in an array of fabrics from re-embroidered lace to silk organza. Another perk of these styles – it’s a great way to show off your wedding shoes.
Think Pink
Just like the cheeks of a young bride, dresses are blushing with color this year. The most popular color so far is pink. From the palest soft powdery hue to a deep rose, brides are tickled pink to try a shade beyond the basic ivory and white.
Sleek & Modern
Skip the foo-foo ruffles, beads, and poufy skirts this year and join the brides who prefer a pared down look that puts all the focus on them. The “less is more” approach looks fresh, clean, and simply romantic.
X Marks the Spot
A graphic addition to the open-back trend of 2013, a crisscross of lace or crystals across the bride’s back gives a bold and undeniably elegant statement of – “I’m sexy.” It’s also a great alternative to strapless.
Princess Bride
Sophisticated Shoulders
Speaking of strapless – today’s bride seems to prefer a little more coverage on top with an accent on the shoulder area. This imaginative look of a bit of beads or lace provides a lovely face-framing highlight.
It never goes out of style. Every year newer versions of the classic princess gown appear with ever-changing, inspiring details. Girls will never stop wanting to be a princess on their special day, some with crown and all. by Statesboro Magazine 2014 • 33

Tradition dictates weddings are
Classic Black
Classic Black Styles now have narrower silk lapels & collars giving the torso a longer, leaner look. The one-button style surpasses the two-button as the jacket of choice for a more elegant look. Bowties remain the neckwear of choice for the most formal look.
generally all about the bride, but there is now a spotlight on the groom as the bride’s best accessory. Today we have both bride and groom getting involved in style and color choices. Grooms are redefining classic wedding attire and incorporating modernity without losing an ounce of style.
50 Shades of Grey
For some, the traditional idea of the wedding party has changed. Many haberdashers are selling all shades of grey suits to wedding parties rather than tuxedos with tails. Many ceremonies are more relaxed these days, and the wedding party reflects that.
Brown Sugar
Just as brown sugar is partially refined, a brown tuxedo just isn’t quite as sophisticated at classic black. The color brown is the color of all things natural and organic, so there is a place for the brown tuxedo among gentlemen who want to evoke earthiness and really stand out in the crowd.
It’s a Tie
The dapper stars of the red carpet in Hollywood are mixed in their approach to the classic accessory for every tuxedo or dressy suit – the tie. For a formal, classic, and elegant approach the bow tie is required. The size of the bow tie should match the size of the wearer and balance the overall look. Suits Me
Not all weddings are held in church with a reception following. Now weddings are taking place in courtyards, backyards, plantation homes, vineyards, front porches, and gardens. With the lack of formality, the attire needs to match the occasion. Suits allow the wedding to stay classic and well-dressed without the conventionality of a tux.
The Color Purple
Another popular trend in weddings is to incorporate a color or pattern from the bridal party into the groomsmen’s ensembles. For example, if the bridesmaids’ dresses are a version of lilac, a light purple tie or pocket square can help bring the look of the entire group together in an inconspicuous way. by Statesboro Magazine 2014 • 35

Engagement Ring
425 Commerce Dr., Statesboro (912) 871-2971 - www.cbofbc.com
This year several jewelry styles are peaking in popularity, and whether it’s vintage or a more modern design, there’s a wedding ring trend that will appeal to every bride and groom. Here are six trends to consider before the question is popped.
Halos
A huge trend for 2013, the halo style is in no danger of fading away. Inspired by vintage designs they appeal not only because they make a center diamond appear larger they also enhance the ring’s sparkle. The effect is truly captivating, with halo settings providing great value for overall carat weight.
Yellow & Rose Gold
While in recent years, white gold and platinum have been the overwhelmingly popular metal choices, yellow and rose gold are becoming increasingly sought after. Their antique feel appeals to those with an eye for distinctive design, adding an unexpected twist to otherwise modern or timeless ring styles.
Cushion Cuts
Now more popular than the brilliant princess-cut, the modern cushion cut diamond is a hybrid of antique Old European and mine cuts. With less sparkle than the round, but characterized by soft rounded edges, this is a shape that feels truly romantic. They look absolutely incredible set in the aforementioned halos, too.
Emerald Cuts
While the emerald cut is also filled with vintage charm it is very distinct from the cushion cut. A step-cut facet pattern rectangular in shape, it cuts a striking silhouette that has versatility and timeless beauty. The Asscher cut makes a stunning alternative.
Sapphires
Blame Kate Middleton for the new interest in sapphires. Other likely explanations are their relative affordability compared to similarly sized diamonds – and, of course, that they look beautiful. Set in a halo of diamonds, sapphires make a stunning alternative to diamond engagement rings for those who love to stand out like royalty.
Personalization
Many brides and grooms are taking it personally when it comes to their wedding jewelry. In addition to choosing to engrave the insides of their wedding rings, couples are selecting styles that incorporate their wedding date or their names on the outside, creating one-of-a-kind declarations of love for all to see. by Statesboro Magazine 2014 • 37

Stylish Dinnerware
Don’t limit your choices to white because you think it is a basic color that will last the years. Choose something a little more unique to make your dining experiences reflect your tastes in design.
A Grill
In South Georgia, no home is complete without a nice backyard grill. With almost year-round pleasant outdoor temperatures, grilling for many is at least a weekly event.
Oven-to-Table
Not just the Pyrex dish set, but register for something a little more upscale as well. You’ll be attending church suppers, pot-lucks, and parties, where pretty bake-ware will come in handy in showcasing your fabulous recipes and in coming right out of the oven onto the table.
Artwork
For couples who basically have everything, registering for art pieces at galleries or stores can be a way to express their artistic flair, and will be a special memory of their love of art and each other for years to come. A Cordless Drill
Extra Wine Glasses
You’ll need them when friends gather, for holiday celebrations, birthday parties, showers, girlfriends’ get-togethers, plus you will break some, so get enough in the beginning.
This will be more useful than a George Foreman Grill. A cordless drill will handle everything from wall hangings to draperies, shelves to putting together furniture. This is one tool that will always come in handy. Photo Albums
Home Décor
While it is important to have a wellstocked kitchen, don’t forget the rest of the house when registering for home essentials. You will also need basics like lamps, decorative pillows and throws, bed linens, towels and blankets.
Even though it’s the digital age, you will still want to browse actual photos of your family through the years. You may also have vintage photos from the past that need a nice place to display. Keep those treasured family pictures always at hand with nice albums. Christmas Decorations
Your first Christmas together will be extra special if some of your decorations were wedding gifts instead of you having to purchase everything for yourself. Decorations as gifts ensure that when you decorate the Christmas tree, you will also be remembering your blessed day. by Statesboro Magazine 2014 • 39

“My
Aunt Tiffany has an amazing camera and she has offered to take our wedding pictures for us.” While Aunt Tiffany may be really good with her camera, we thought we would share a little insight as to why you want to leave the photography to the professionals. Your wedding is a once in a lifetime event and there is no such thing as “a do over.” The single most important thing after your wedding is for you to see beautiful images that captured your day as a whole…the first kiss, the way your mom looked at you as she was fluffing your veil, the tear that dad had in his eye as he walked you down the aisle, and even that special sparkle that your ring gives in the perfect light! You would be devastated if the pictures were not what you expected because you decided to go with a friend or an amateur just to save a little money. After the wedding, no amount of money can fix this. Those memories are priceless and the photos will be passed down for generations. Good wedding photography is more than just a fancy camera. Professionals have spent literally thousands of hours training to be a photographer, editing photos, and actually gaining experience while shooting real weddings. They know how to compose the shot beautifully and then execute it with skill. It isn’t the camera that does this, it’s the professional.
by Paige Williams & Chantel Angelino
Knowing and understanding different lighting situations is also the key to beautiful images. A professional photographer can walk into any room and know within seconds where the best spot is to stand and where the best light will be. The professional has thousands of dollars in gear to make the perfect shot happen. Most professional photographers will carry a professional grade camera, a backup camera, a multitude of lenses, flashes, lights, spare batteries, and memory cards to ensure you get those perfect images! A great wedding photographer will make the job look easy. He or she will work seamlessly to get those amazing shots in the least amount of time possible and make sure you and your guests have a great time doing it. Remember your photographer is about the only vendor that spends the entire day with you, so choosing a good one is very important
to having a successful, memorable day. While the family-friend photographer may be taking a break at the bar, the professional will be capturing the adorable ring bearer giving the flower girl a kiss on the dance floor. Don’t leave these priceless memories to chance. Ask “Aunt Tiffany” to serve the cake the reception. And ask a professional photographer to capture your most memorable day.

eautiful romantic outdoor v e n u e s , p l e n t y o f wa r m
sunny days and over 100 churches make Statesboro and Bulloch County a natural wedding destination for couples on their special day. Home to Georgia Southern University, the Sweetheart Campus, Statesboro has long been the choice of brides and grooms seeking an enchanting and memorable setting for their wedding. The Sweetheart Campus, so named because of the heart-shaped design in the layout of university buildings surrounding Sweetheart Circle on Georgia Southern’s original main campus, GSU has been the setting of student and faculty engagements and weddings throughout the university’s history. Many students met their mates while attending college in Statesboro, became engaged on campus, and often married here right after graduation, before leaving school friends behind. The legend of Sweetheart Circle has it that any couple who walks around the circle’s perimeter three times will one day marry. Many GSU alumni return to Statesboro each year not only for the football games, but for romantic anniversary weekends as well.
Georgia Southern is also home to the Garden of the Coastal Plain at GSU. Once the early 20th century farmstead of Dan and Catharine Bland, the Botanical Garden is centered on the Bland cottage and features many native plantings originally done by Mr. Bland, including the allÊe of Southern Magnolias and American Hollies in front of the home. Other features of the garden include a Heritage Pavilion, Heritage Farmyard with fountain feature, and a Weather Vane Barn. The rustic historical buildings and beautiful heirloom plantings and seasonal varieties of flowers make the Botanical Garden a romantic setting for nuptials daytime or evenings. The Wildlife Education Center and Lamar Q. Ball, Jr. Raptor Center at GSU also offers a background of native plantings and landscaped trails for weddings. The Wildlife Center features an indoor meeting room and an outdoor lighted pavilion for special events. Landscape lighting, especially at night, makes the Wildlife Center a dramatic choice for adventurous couples. In October of 2010, Dr. Jeff Edgens and Ms. Janie Evans became the first couple on record to get engaged at the Wildlife Center. Both instructors at the East Georgia College campus, located on by Statesboro Magazine 2014 • 43
GSU’s campus at that time, the two’s special moment occurred on one of the observation decks overlooking the duck pond in the Wildlife Center’s Wetland Preserve. The Georgia Southern Museum located in the Rosenwald Building on campus, features Ionic columns, a rotunda lobby space, marble floors and stairs, and separate galleries for permanent and rotating exhibits. Both the classical architecture and the interesting exhibits provide a memorable background for weddings in an iconic building surrounded 44 •

by the beautiful landscaping of manicured lawns, magnolia trees and pine trees on Sweetheart Circle. Other campus locations that may be considered for wedding events include the Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art building, the Performing Art Center, the Russell Union ballroom and the Nessmith Lane Continuing Education ballroom. A couple can also actually marry in a beautiful outdoor ceremony on the grounds of Sweetheart Circle, creating a legend of their own.
In addition to the University’s many romantic settings for weddings, Statesboro is also home to churches of almost every faith. The “Cathedral of the South Georgia Conference,” Statesboro’s First United Methodist Church, has a gothic stone sanctuary with vaulted ceilings and terrazzo floors designed by architect Walter H. Aldred, Jr., and completed in 1959. In addition, the sanctuary has one of the South’s largest collections of leaded stained glass multi-story windows, making it one of Statesboro’s most dramatic
and most popular sanctuaries for wedding ceremonies. Couples of all faiths choose the cathedral setting for its picturesque and historical qualities. All other area churches host wedding ceremonies as well in sanctuaries ranging from chapels seating 50 guests to auditoriums seating well over 1,000. Another popular wedding location, Statesboro’s First Baptist Church completed the city’s largest sanctuary with space for an orchestra and other complementary elements
in November of 2011. Forethought was put into the new building design with two parlors located on opposite sides of the sanctuary: one for the bride and one for the groom. Statesboro is also home to two bed and breakfast inns featuring romantic gardens, parlors, catering services, and banquet facilities: Georgia’s Bed & Breakfast Inn on Zetterower Avenue and The Historical Statesboro Inn & Restaurant located on South Main Street across from the First United Methodist Church.
Other wedding destinations abound throughout Statesboro and the surrounding area: from the world class Meinhardt Winery & Vineyard to the early 20th century Bulloch County courthouse; from the Averitt Center for the Arts & Emma Kelly Theater to the rural W.W. Mann Center Retreat, many special locations are available for every bridal couple whether seeking a setting of natural beauty, dramatic architectural elements, or historical significance. Any location near Statesboro comes with a long tradition of romance. by Statesboro Magazine 2014 • 45
