Carpe diem! Welcome to the all-new Vox populi (Voice of the People)… the 2014 edition of Best of the Mid-Valley. A celebration of all that is the Mid-Valley! Long time readers will notice that we have added “People’s Choice” to the title of our program. This is, after-all, the opportunity we offer our audience to nominate then vote for the best. This year you will find a completely reimagined approach to the program. We have seven major categories this year including the familiar: Food & Drink, Home & Garden, Schools, and Shopping & Services. We have expanded our Places to Go & Things to Do section, and new this year is a focus on Downtown Salem and the Central Coast of Oregon. This year we had over 1,634 nominations across the categories and we collected 220,173 votes. This year we are honoring 409 winners from 292 companies, individuals, institutions and organizations that are claiming Gold, Silver or Bronze awards. We upgraded our online voting system this year that resulted in unduplicated votes that truly represent Vox populli! The results of the 2014 Best Of were a surprise to many! Long time winners such as Roth’s Fresh Market, Word Of Mouth Neighborhood Bistro, Salon 554, Saalfeld Griggs, Jackson Jewelers, Boucher Jewelers, Gerry Frank’s Konditorei, The Half Penny and La Hacienda continued their strong hold with our reader’s opinions. Hats off to Antique Powerland and Majors Plumbing, both first time winners. Having lived in Salem now for a year and a half, I am always amazed when people
say “there is nothing to do” or “no place to eat.” According to Marion County, there are 598 restaurants in Salem & Keizer. Take that number to 805 when you look at the entire county. In these pages you will find 292 businesses and organizations that welcome your patronage. In fact, it could take an entire year to explore each of the winners that our part of Oregon has to offer! I encourage you to read about each and every one of the winners that are represented here. I also encourage you to engage with the community. Shopping, dining out and living local has never been more important to the financial health of our area, state and nation. Finally, I encourage you to engage with us on a daily basis. You can find us on your front porch and on newsstands with the Statesman Journal. You can also engage with us on our new smart phone and tablet apps, now available in the Apple Store and Google Play. Every minute you’ll find fresh content that is important to you! All across the Mid-Valley and the Central Oregon Coast, you’ll see the Best of Logo proudly displayed in successful and popular businesses and restaurants. Better, you’ll find them in these pages and on our website at www.StatesmanJournal.com/Bestof. I welcome your comments and thoughts on this year’s book. Simply email me: bcummings@statesmanjournal.com. Perfruor!

Nancy’s Burgers & Fries opened in Keizer February 2013, preparing good, old-fashioned burgers, fries and milk shakes. By December that year, customers wanted another location in West Salem to enjoy that Holy Grail of American dining. In creating their menu, the owners tasted and tested, landing on their standard 4-ounce burger patty of 100 percent fresh ground sirloin. Salads, sandwiches, hot dogs, corn dogs and onion rings are also favorites. Both locations are kid friendly with a clean, cozy atmosphere. They also serve ice-cold beer and wine for adults. Nancy’s is open seven days a week, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the summer; winter they close at 8 p.m. Place orders onsite or call for pick up.

Kwan’s Cuisine has been remodeled as one of the largest banquet areas in Salem. After 37 years, Kwan’s Cuisine includes specialties like Strawberry Chicken and Kwan’s Special Chow Mein, and favorites such as Chicken Pot Stickers and Hot and Sour Soup. Kwan’s also caters to health requests such as gluten-free, special oils and whole-grain rices, vegetarian and vegan. Take-out and banquets are offered. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday; 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday; 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Saturday; and 11:30 to 9:30 p.m. Sunday. Muchas Gracias stays away from frozen ingredients, using everything fresh Muchas Gracias may draw in a steady stream of customers with tasty “cheap eats,” but the experience of tasting their Mexican cuisine is about way more than saving money. The restaurant opened in 2004 and has spent 10 years preparing their specialty tacos and burritos from scratch onsite. Their food may be ‘fast’, but they know taste is important, so everything is fresh and never frozen. Muchas Gracias offers catering for big and small events, including some of Salem’s larger corporate businesses for meetings or company events.

Cakes displayed at Gerry Frank’s Konditorei Gerry Frank and Barney Rogers decided in 1982 that Salem needed a premier cake shop. They’ve kept that mission since that first day, when they ran out of cakes because they were so good. Today, Gerry Frank’s Konditorei still has dessert options of 40 cake and cheesecake varieties. Yet the café that has operated at the same location for 32 years also serves light breakfast, full lunch and dinner, and an after-8 menu at reasonable prices. A wine and beer bar is onsite, and the Konditorei also serves espresso and gelato. Open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday; 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday; 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday; 8:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.
Roth’s Fresh Markets still make donuts every morning from scratch. Roth’s even makes their famed maple icing the old-fashioned way in store. Using only the best ingredients, these donuts are unforgettable. The glazed raised donuts are light and airy and covered with a buttery glaze. Never had one? The bakery gives free samples made in all of the nine Roth’s Fresh Markets. Clean stores, tasty prepared foods, in-store wine experts and knowledgeable friendly employees make shopping at Roth’s an enjoyable experience every time. The first Friday of every month from 3 to 6 p.m. is a great time to visit, for wine tasting with food-pairing suggestions and free samples of new products. Open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.

Fire ‘n Slice Gourmet Kitchen Fire ‘n Slice Gourmet Kitchen packs a lot of heat into its 18-foot food trailer that permanently sits at b2 Taphouse. At their 2012 start, they had a more compact mobile wood-fired pizza oven, using it to sell at f/Stop Fitzgeralds. When Oregon weather allowed, they could also sell at other Salem venues and provide catering and offer festival food. When they started serving at b2 Taphouse, they upgraded to their current trailer in November 2013 and had a home they could use more than four days a week. They do not use heat lamps on any order and provide table service. They operate 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, Monday and Thursday; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

arks, greenbelts and creekside paths connect Downtown Salem’s historic past with its promising future says the godowntownsalem.com website. Downtown is full of friendly merchants, unique stores and local goods in a shopping district of old and new. Enjoy shopping the way it was meant to be!
“The pleasure I get from being downtown is the interesting, diverse retail stores; independents who are not cookie cutter. uy? Sell? Fix-up? Maintain? A daunting decision many of us face. As the financial woes of the past half-dozen years appear to be subsiding, Ty Hildebrand sees home sales and home-base investing picking up. A Realtor® for nine years, Hildebrand is a principal broker at Prudential Real Estate Professionals. But what if you can’t find the perfect home to buy? Hildebrand says people look at remodeling their existing home or purchasing a home to remake into the perfect haven. “The remodeling business is really booming,” he said. “But, it is getting more difficult to hire contractors because they are so busy. Plus there is more new construction now, more than in many past years.”

Christina Slivkoff is good at her job, even though being a top-ranked Realtor® was not always what she planned. “I wasn’t sure what I wanted to be when I “grew up,” so it only seemed natural to follow in my dad’s footsteps and obtain my real estate license. I have held an active license with Coldwell Banker since 2002,” Slivkoff said. What she has learned through education and experience is how to help every client, whether selling or buying property. She listens to what they want to accomplish and helps them through what is often a roller-coaster of real estate ups and downs. As a Realtor®, she considered working with several real estate companies in Salem and eventually chose Coldwell Banker Mountain West.

ew people know Oregon as well as Gerry Frank. Especially when it comes to places to explore! Some visit the central Oregon Coast for non-stop oceanfront fun. Some like the respite afforded by the waves. Gerry Frank is the type who likes the leisure of the Coast. “I go for relaxing,” said Frank, a 90-year-old restaurateur and best-selling author from Salem. The native Oregonian grew up in Gearhart and is part of a family with seven generations who have called Oregon their home.
Frank is the owner of Gerry Frank’s Konditorei in Salem, a café that features dessert options of 40 cake and cheesecake varieties. For 32 years, the Konditorei has been in the same location and serves light breakfast, full lunch and dinner, and wine and beer. With his restaurant experience and his book, Frank has become the go-to person for advice on coastal travel. He easily rattles off a list – north to south – of his most suggested inclusions on his must-see list for the Oregon Coast, locations that are an easy drive from Salem.
Frank began saying, “In Astoria, people Some visit the central Oregon should see the Astor Coast for non-stop oceanfront Column. In Seaside, they want to visit a fun. Some like the respite more carnival-like atmosphere of the afforded by the waves. Prom.” That 1.5-mile oceanfront Promenade dates from the 1920s and is nationally known. Two years ago he wrote a guidebook, “Gerry Frank’s Oregon.” Its first edition of 25,000 Next, Frank talks about Cannon Beach – the printed copies has sold out and another jewel of the Oregon Coast, he said. He also edition will come soon, Frank said. recommends staying at the Ocean Lodge But Frank doesn’t just call the state his home in casual conversation. “I have written a bestselling guidebook about Oregon,” he tells. “I vacation on the Coast and I love it.”
when in Cannon Beach. For dining, he can’t decide whether the Irish Table or Newmans at 988 should get his primary recommendation. Next are Frank’s top picks for the Gleneden Beach area. “Salishan (Spa and Gerry Frank, Golf Resort) is a great place author of to stay and golf. And “Gerry Frank’s there’s Depoe Bay. Tidal Oregon” Raves (Seafood Grill) is a great place to eat at Depoe Bay,” he said. Finally, Frank said, “Go to Newport and visit the Oregon Coast Aquarium.” Those are a lot of suggestions from Frank, but his favorite place on the Coast is always having a great meal at the Bay House Restaurant in Lincoln City. Or maybe the Side Door Café at Gleneden Beach. He couldn’t decide. - Special to the Statesman Journal

hether public, charter or private, Salem schools offer more than the basics for their students, said Tom Hewitt, an educator who tried to retire three years ago from overseeing middle school and high school drama programs. “What I didn’t realize until I was fully retired is that I am happiest when I am swamped,” Hewitt said while his Blanchet Catholic School production of “Cinderella” was in full swing. He works part time at the school directing the drama productions. Along with being a part-time teacher and parttime retiree, Hewitt spends his time working as an event emcee and he is very involved in the many productions happening at the Pentacle Theater. Working in educational theater most of his adult life gives Hewitt a unique perspective of today’s educational environment in Salem.
“I think there are very strong academics in both private and public schools. I don’t want to compare public and private, though. The challenge of public schools is the numbers - large enrollment numbers. Yet, they are able to offer lots of things to kids,” Hewitt said.
Tom Hewitt, Blanchet Catholic School Drama Director
For any student to achieve success in any educational setting, Hewitt has some advice. “Number one is parent involvement with schools and students need to adopt the idea that going to school is their job.
“Training, experience and instruction are valued things.”
There’s a lot of access to activities that kids don’t typically have access to outside of a school system Those years taught him that having the opportunities provided in school is a privilege and students need to take advantage of what is offered. Hewitt added, “There’s a lot of access to activities that kids don’t typically have access to outside of a school system: sports, arts, performing arts, leadership, speech and all sorts of clubs.” He is especially glad to see Salem schools offer strong music programs, both vocal and instrumental, in addition to the very strong high school theater programs in the Mid-Valley.
He said he had a modest childhood in Salem, where he attended public schools.

ave Metzger is typically an unknown face in Salem. Yet the Grammy Award winning composer, arranger and orchestrator who lives in Salem is known worldwide for his musical contributions to several popular Disney films released in the past few decades. “Salem is a small enough city that you can see a lot of people you know at events or walking in a park, or going to a store. There’s a sense of community,” said the awardwinning musician. Metzger’s most celebrated awards include best orchestrated score for “Frozen,” which won the 2014 Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film and Best

Original Song (“Let It Go”).
Salem is a small enough city that you can see a lot of people you know at events or walking in a park... There’s a sense of community.
He also earned a Tony Award nomination for his work on “The Lion King” (1998); Grammy Award for the “Tarzan” soundtrack (1999); Grammy Award for “The Lion King” cast recording (1998); and, Multi-Platinum record for “Tarzan” (2 million copies sold).
“I just work all the time. I’ve had few days off over last year and half. So I try to get outside, Minto-Brown and Riverfront Parks, whenever I can,” he said. Metzger said he also likes to walk among Salem’s famed cherry blossoms. “This time of year, I head to see the Capitol Mall cherry trees and blossoms.” We do go out to eat a lot, too. We tend to go toward the ethnic restaurants. There are a lot we go to and cycle through the list,” he said. “One of the restaurants I really enjoy is Roberts Crossing. We go for the quality of the food and service.”
For an out-of-thenorm film experience, he knows that he can count on Salem Cinema. “I go there to see a bit more artsy films. It’s nice to go see films that are off the beaten track,” he said. For traditional entertainment, he said he is always ready to attend presentations from the Salem Chamber Orchestra or the Salem Master Chorus. “Salem has been a great place to raise a family,” said Metzger, the father of two sons, the youngest of whom is in college, while the eldest is in graduate school. “We moved here when the oldest was 1 ½ years old. It’s been a fabulous place to raise them. That is my number one appreciation of Salem. …I appreciate the strong music program in Salem Public Schools. Our boys were both a part of that, and they had a wonderful exposure to music.” - Special to the Statesman Journal

The theater also reserves three performances of each production as fundraisers for local nonprofit organizations, generating more than $250,000 for those groups over the years.

Growl Movement was the first stand-alone growler fill station in Oregon when they opened the doors to their Keizer location in March 2013. Folks in the area fell in love with the idea, and by the end of the year Growl Movement opened its second location in South Salem. Customers will find a rotating selection of 34 craft beers, hard ciders, and kombucha teas in their freshest form, straight from the tap to enjoy on site or take home in a Growler (64 oz) or Growlette (32 oz). Most of the brews on tap cannot be found in a bottle at the local grocery store, making Growl Movement the go-to place for fresh new beers. Hours in South Salem are Sunday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. In Keizer, hours are Sunday to Thursday noon to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Honeywood Winery has over 50 unique wines as well as a great gift shop Honeywood Winery opened the day after prohibition ended, and Oregon’s oldest winery is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. Folks can visit Honeywood’s tasting room and gift shop 7 days a week, and wine tastings are always complimentary. Honeywood produces more than 50 unique wines from three categories: Viniferous, Specialty, & Fruit. The fruit & specialty lines are a large part of the winery’s rich history. From the 1930s well into the 1960s, there were very few if any local vineyards, so all wines instead were made from the fruits of Oregon. Honeywood Winery also has a happy hour every 3rd Friday of the month, where you can enjoy free appetizers, wine tasting and amazing ambiance.

The Marion-Polk Food Share has relied on volunteers since it opened in 1987. As the regional food bank, it is responsible for collecting and distributing more than 8 million pounds of food each year. Last year, volunteers contributed more than 260,000 hours to make sure local families had the food they needed. Volunteer opportunities include food handling, clerical service, warehouse operations, driving and gardening, as well as many other imaginative ways to help end hunger. The food share welcomes volunteers who need community service hours for school credit and also have a limited number of opportunities for court-mandated volunteers to participate. It is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The oldest public golf course in the SalemKeizer area, McNary Golf Club lies on the site in Keizer that once was the homestead of Charles McNary (1874-1944), a U.S. Senator, Dean of the Willamette University School of Law, Oregon Supreme Court Justice and the 1940 Vice-Presidential running mate of Wendell Wilkie. Since he was an ardent golfer, it is appropriate that the course was named in his honor at its opening in 1962. The 6,239-yard, par-71 championship course features lush fairways, spacious greens and hazards that provide a challenge for golfers. Claggett Creek comes into play on holes 1, 9, 10 and 18. The challenge and beauty of the course has also been augmented with several small lakes with fountains.

Though social media was a simple handshake in the summer of 1962 when Orville N. Roth and Herman C. Jochimsen opened the first Roth’s store in Silverton, the company has embraced the digital era. Still locally owned and operated, Roth’s Fresh Markets has expanded to nine stores, all of which keep in contact with customers online. Roth’s keeps customers up to date on food trends and uses Facebook to tell customers about new items, promotions, events and specials. Because customer service has always been the top priority at Roth’s, they use their Freshmail. This direct email campaign allows subscribers access to all Roth’s advertised promotions plus special discounts only available to Freshmail users. Facebook and Twitter also provide valuable customer feedback.

An artist’s rendition of Willamette Valley Vineyards remodel and expansion Willamette Valley Vineyards has been producing high-quality, sustainably grown Pinot Noir and other cool-climate varieties since 1983, earning the distinction as “One of America’s Great Pinot Noir Producers” by Wine Enthusiast Magazine and “2011 Winery of the Year” from Wine & Spirits Magazine. Its mission is to create elegant, classic Oregon wines from the Willamette Valley Appellation while serving as stewards of the land. Founder Jim Bernau believes we are rewarded with wines that taste better when made from naturally grown wine grapes. Tending the vines by hand and using minimalist winemaking techniques in small-batch fermentations, the vineyards strive to capture the unique sense of place that comes from our soils. Willamette Valley Vineyards wines have been served at the White House and some of the world’s finest restaurants and have made appearances on hit television shows like “Friends,” “Grimm,” “The West Wing” and “How I Met Your Mother.” Hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

The Daue House Gift Shop is a beautiful craftsman bungalow Salem’s top consignment shop is operated by the Assistance League of Salem-Keizer, a non-profit, all-volunteer organization that has provided philanthropic programs to the local community since 1963. The League’s shop is located in the Alexander Daue House, a beautiful Craftsman Bungalow structure that is on the National Register of Historic Places. Consignors personally meet with pricing and marking staff to determine the value of their items, which allows staff to control the quality of what is accepted and provides consignors confidence that their collectibles are priced fairly. Pricing is on a sliding scale, which gives shoppers a wonderful opportunity to monitor markdown dates. Consignors receive 60 percent of sales, and checks are issued to consignors on a monthly basis. Hours are Monday through Saturday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The shop takes consignments Monday and Wednesday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Ashley and Katie of Crunchy Mamas create unique and fun items such as Baby Butt Balm The Crunchy Mamas began making natural, down-to-earth skin care products for themselves after hearing about harmful chemicals in the products they were using on their own babies. Ashley and Katie went online and began researching recipes for balms, creams and lotions as well as the health benefits of various essential oils. One day they were two stay-at-home moms making lip balms in old baby food jars, and the next they were shipping their creations to customers all over the United States. Their products include Baby Butt Balm, Scab Stick, Bug Off, Crusty Foot and Menth Head, a natural vapor rub for congested kids. They also host Make & Take Events at Claire’s Mercantile in Dallas, where people can sit with them and make natural alternatives to commercial products.

She started LiveJoy Photography after realizing how much she loved photographing newborns and babies. She strives to communicate with clients before, during and after their photo shoot and to turn around high-quality pictures within a couple of weeks, not months. She works on location but also offers a home studio for newborn or baby sessions. “I have worked with children my entire life and absolutely adore them,” Lindsay said. “This plays an important role in getting the right shot—I have to earn a child’s trust before I can photograph them well.” She also books children, maternity, engagement, family and pet sessions.

In addition, the hospital’s Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit can care for babies born as early as 26 weeks, which means moms and babies can stay together in the same hospital even if there are complications with the birth. No other hospital in the area has a NICU on-site. The birth center also offers 24-hour obstetrics coverage by hospital physicians, which means that no matter when your baby decides to come, there is a doctor on-site, ready to help.

Bauman’s Farm started its Pumpkin Patch when Brian, the oldest child of Rick and Barb Bauman, needed a place to take his second grade class to get pumpkins. They invited his entire class out to the farm, and Rick built a small maze out of straw for the kids to play in while they were there. The kids liked it so much, the rest of the school soon followed and came back on the weekends with their parents to play. Word spread, and so did the patch. The Bauman’s Farm pumpkin patch now has over 25 different activities for kids of all ages as well as homemade food like caramel apples and hot apple cider donuts. Bauman’s is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. - and is open Sundays in October.

Felicity Boutique’s goal is to create a boutique experience without the price, offering a reasonable alternative to big box stores while encouraging the “buy local - support community” mentality. They promise to never carry any item over $100. Felicity’s has a little bit of everything, but what sets them apart is their locally hand-made product lines. The store also has an ongoing project called “Operation Bra Drop,” where they accept clean, gently used and new bras that we pass on and distribute to “support” women in need. Felicity’s has sent bras around the world Mexico, Haiti and Africa, as well as right here in Salem. They’re open weekdays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday noon to 4 p.m.
