LUV BRACES

Service-oriented, community-involved and family-run W hen Dr. Amirali Tahbaz and his wife Dr. Mona Rezapour launched their dentistry practice Luv Braces in 2014, the goal was to be the community’s go-to orthodontics office. You can always find one of the co-owners of Luv Braces, both certified orthodontists, at one of their two locations, in Austin and Bee Cave. “Our vision was always to create a service-first practice and to be engaged with our community and our schools,” Dr. Tahbaz told the Austin American Statesman. Their vision, however, has changed ever so slightly as a result of COVID-19. “It has put a hindrance on the business because building a culture of togetherness when everyone’s trying to social distance and separate, is more difficult,” Dr. Tahbaz said in an interview. For one thing, even though Gov. Abbott dropped the state’s mask mandate, patients are re-

quired to wear masks and are in and out of the office more quickly than usual. “There’s a limited number of people allowed in our office and forms are completed in advance and submitted electronically,” Dr. Tahbaz said. “We’ve integrated a new air filtration system into our office that sterilizes and recycles the office atmosphere every 15 minutes.” Despite the safety protocols that the coronavirus pandemic has required, Luv Braces is one of the highest reviewed and rated orthodontics office in the Austin area. “We’ve been very adaptive to COVID and patients appreciate that,” Tahbaz added. One thing Tahbaz wants to Texans to know about braces is that they are not just for teenagers. “A growing portion of our patients have been young professionals looking to improve themselves,” he said. “We’ve treated all ages from six to 60 years old.”

Meet Dr. Amirali Tahbaz

With parents who owned a dry cleaning business in San Diego, Dr. Tahbaz wasn’t exposed to dentistry or orthodontics as a career path while growing up. It was only after he attended university that Dr. Tahbaz became aware of the profession.

“I visited a dental office Dr. Tahbaz and Dr. Rezapour and family. and got intrigued with the dental field,” he said. “I was already studying to go to medical school but I felt like the attributes of what it takes to be a dentist or orthodontist was a better fit for my personality.” Dr. Tahbaz was eventually outfitted with a pair of braces once he entered orthodontics school. “I wanted them and I also wanted them so I understood more what patients would go through because I never went through it myself until that time,” he said.

Meet Dr. Mona Rezapour Although Dr. Rezapour’s uncle is a dentist, she decided to become an orthodontist after having the experience of wearing braces. “Having a great smile does impact your life forever and I liked that about being an orthodontist,” she said. “I liked dentistry too but I could not see myself being a dentist forever. Being an orthodontist was something that interested me and I wanted to do that for life. It’s an exciting career.” Being a young mom herself of a 2 and 4-year-old, Dr. Rezapour understands the importance of planning for a child’s future dental needs. “My four-year-old is always asking for braces but she’s too little for that,” Dr. Rezapour said.

What sets Luv Braces apart from other orthodontists?

So, the customer service we give to our patients sets us apart.”

What is the best part about being an Austin business?

A: The duo deliberately chose Austin as a place to live, raise their own family and grow their business because, despite the rising number of young families, they thought it offered a perfect balance of a big and small city. “We visited Austin and we just knew that Texas had far more opportunities for us as a young family and young business owners,” Dr. Tahbaz said. “We’re all just flourishing together and nature hikes are just 20 to 30 minutes away.”

What has been the most instrumental part of Luv Braces’ success?

A: According to Dr. Tahbaz, it’s his wife, Dr. Mona Rezapour who has

been instrumental to their success. “She’s always been a great driver for us to always do better,” he said. “It’s great to bounce ideas off each other and work together as a team.” For Dr. Rezapour, it’s the milestone of opening a second office just 40 minutes away in Bee Cave and enlisting a pediatric dentist who specializes in dental cleanings. “People like the fact that we have a pediatric dentist and orthodontist in the same office,” she said. “When they come to get their cleaning done, I can do their braces. It’s good to have both doctors in one office.”

What does the future hold for Luv Braces?

A: Luv Braces is always adapting. Most recently, the practice implemented 3D printing so that patients no longer have to undergo a molding of their teeth. “We don’t take impressions or molds anymore,” Dr. Tahbaz said. “We just scan patient’s mouth and then we can 3D print their teeth and make retainers that way. We’re hundred percent free of impressions. We used to outsource but now we make them in-house because of our 3D printer.”

ush’s Chicken offers more than the best chicken, the best tenders, the best sweet tea and the best rolls. The growing business also aims to provide the best service and customer experience possible. The people who keep coming back for more tell them that approach is working. Before opening the first Bush’s Chicken on the outskirts of Waco in 1996, Keith Bush spent two decades working and learning about the chicken business. His experience helped maintain quality on the restaurant menu and has brought innovation to the business, said Bush’s Chicken President Jeff Hammock. Bush’s Chicken, however, is not only a family-oriented and community-friendly quick-service restaurant. Bush also came up with a creative idea in order to provide the quickest drive-through service in town. He sent his employees to get orders from vehicles on multiple lanes instead of serving one car at a time through a speaker system. The shorter wait time equaled better service. In addition, the restaurant offers complete catering services for all occasions. Since then, Bush’s Chicken has been a local favorite not only because of its uniquely marinated products but also due to its friendly in-store vibe that allows its customers to feel comfortable while having meals with their family and friends. Charlene Bush worked at her husband’s side to build and grow the

company. She died of cancer in 2019, but her legacy, and the sweet tea she created, remain a vital part of Bush’s Chicken. Bush’s Chicken maintains the quality of its products with a guarantee that no shortcuts are taken during its preparation, Hammock said. According to their website, the marination process is “done each morning and the special cooking techniques ensure great tasting chicken and tenders.” All sides are also prepared fresh every day, and customers can taste the difference. Eating Bush’s Chicken is a habit that once developed, can become a lifelong pattern. Hammock said that customers not only enjoy the best hand-fried chicken in town, but fixings that fill the plate and satisfy their hunger. Side orders such as French fries, fried okra, green beans, corn nuggets, fried livers and gizzards, mac and cheese and fresh hot yeast rolls are also a big hit. Its famous sweet tea also comes in half and half (half sweet) and unsweetened. When asked about his favorites, Hammock shared that he enjoys a “mixture of the boned chicken, chicken tenders and tender rolls.” A new product called “The Sink” is a must-try, according to Hammock. It is made with French fries and crispy chicken tenders that are smothered either in buffalo sauce and blue cheese dressing or warm barbeque sauce and cheddar cheese.

With plans to further expand the business, Bush, together with his wife Charlene, decided to offer the brand for a franchise. Keith Bush and his team oversee the other parts of Texas and beyond. “We have been at our Brodie location for over 10 years and later added a north Austin location on FM 620,” Hammock said. “In addition, we have three other locations in Cedar Park, Round Rock and Pﬂugerville/Hutto.” Its latest location in Pﬂugerville/Hutto opened less than two years ago. Although increasing property taxes are a great challenge for Bush’s Chicken, the company is “always looking to expand in the Austin market, another location down southeast of our current location and another in the metropolitan area,” Hammock said. Bush’s Chicken’s success is not only brought by its highquality menu but also by more than 150 employees who share a common goal every day — to be the best, Hammock said. And they are not left unappreciated, he said. “We do an Employee Appreciation Night in the summer to thank our employees for all their hard work,” Hammock said. “Usually, for the main event, we have a store versus store bowling competition for the Bush’s Cup. That is a lot of fun.”

What are the expectations today?

A: Despite serving thousands of chickens each day, a part of the Bush’s Chicken company’s goal is to support local schools and nonprofit organizations. “Last year, we donated and gave to our local school systems over $180,000. We work through the booster clubs of the schools as they are not supported by the school’s independent school districts as much as they once were,” Hammock shared. “We enjoy getting to know the booster parents, coaches and teachers that help lead these important groups.” Bush’s Chicken also provides assistance to local churches through donations.

What makes you unique?

A: Employees are a big part of any business growth and success.

Bush’s Chicken looks at job-hunters past their qualifications. The company hires employees that are also focused on serving local communities. “We have long-serving employees that have developed great community relationships which makes our jobs a lot more fun,” Hammock said. “In addition, we employ a lot of high school students which brings energy to our stores and gives us the opportunity to offer many students their first jobs and help develop a work ethic. Having high school students in our system is a true blessing.”

And those improvements are just a few of the efforts that the staff and owners of Solstice at Austin put forth to create a place where individuals feel comfortable, safe, and happy, so they can happily call it home. Solstice might be an age-in-place community that provides assistance for those who need it, but it avoids the nursing home feel, with amenities and elements that make it a cozy, inviting place. When it comes to dining, residents can enjoy the Elevate dining program – which brings together the residents’ favorite homestyle meals and fresh cooking. Meals are prepared from scratch, and residents can enjoy their meals in the warm, in-

viting dining room. The organization’s culinary team prepares a variety of options in their flavorful menus that give residents options that cater to their personal tastes. “We offer a uniquely home-like atmosphere, with residents who are warm and welcoming. Our staff ’s primary goal is to make residents feel comfortable and safe in their new home,” Kolacki said. Solstice offers several levels of assistance for residents and works with home health care professionals to assist residents who find that they need a little more support as they get older. “We work with home health agencies, visiting physician groups, and private care partners to assist our residents, should that ever become necessary,” Kolacki. said The community is less than two miles from St. David’s South Hospital, and there are other medical professionals and specialists nearby. For those who enjoy time outside, the community offers plenty of opportunity to get some sun. The property features several places where residents can unwind and enjoy the fresh air, like the pergola on the property, nestled in a fully

landscaped space that looks like pure serenity. The community sits on nearly 40 acres of mature trees, meadows and creeks. It’s not unusual to enjoy the fabulous view and catch a glimpse of wildlife, even if Solstice is just seven miles from the Capitol and near other Austin attractions, like the Sixth Street entertainment District, the LBJ Presidential Library, or Barton Creek Square. Within the community, there are amenities that make life fun and keep residents comfortable, and they don’t even have to leave the grounds. Some of those amenities include a fitness center, a beauty salon, a library, game and activity rooms, even a movie theater. Residents can get creative in the art room or deepen their spiritual lives in the worship center. Nearly 100 residents call Solstice Senior Living home and live in the community’s cozy homes. niversity Village Memory Care and Assisted Living continues to raise the standards of memory care and assisted living. In August 2011, UVMC first opened its doors at 4701 Campus Village Drive in Round Rock. Its community was designed with its residents in mind — inviting and comfortable for families and their loved ones while offering a residential program that specializes in “care and support of individuals in varying stages of Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and related disorders,” according to its website. “Our community is one story with an amazingly simple and unique layout,” UVMC Administrator and Personal Relations Director Terra Jones said. “We have lots of natural lighting and windows that provide an incredibly open feel. Our enclosed courtyards with access, provide a safe environment for residents to enjoy the outdoors.” University Village wants families and residents to feel they are at home rather than a care community. The high ceilings and amazing amount of natural lighting was designed to help with the residents’ sleep pattern and improve their moods.

University Village consists of four distinct neighborhoods, each one giving residents the sense of home and comfort that helps reduce confusion and loneliness. UVMC opened as University Village Memory Care; however, according to Jones, she started receiving calls from families who needed more than assisted living but their loved one was not ready for a memory care community. There are also families that did not want to separate their parents who have been married for more than 65 years, while still keeping them under the same roof and meeting each parent’s individual needs. “A community that had trained staff to understand their loved one’s challenges but assure they still had a sense of independence,” Jones said. “I knew just how to support what our families needed and quickly offered options for exactly where our families were at. We then became University

Village Memory Care and Assisted Living.” During the Covid-19 pandemic, UVMC dedicated Valerian Home Health and Hospice nurses exclusively to its residents. “Valerian Home Health and Hospice has trained nurses and therapists that understand our residents’ challenges,” Jones said. “This provided a peace of mind knowing we were doing everything we could to keep Covid out of our community. We continue to offer nursing and therapy support to our residents in need. University Village has successfully stayed Covid-free.” Since its opening, University Village has been locally owned and operated by UV Memory Care LLC. CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY TEXAS A nursing program that prepares students with core academics and distinct mission

ith the COVID-19 pandemic and recent weather events emphasizing the important work that nurses do, Concordia University Texas, a finalist in the Best Nursing Program category, reports that many of its upcoming graduates have already been hired by local health care facilities. The Concordia University Texas nursing program, which started in 2010, has 446 Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students, said Dr. Amber Shammas, senior director of the College of Health Sciences at the university, located in northwest Austin. The BSN program offers a traditional track and an accelerated track, and these operate with the same mission statement, Dr. Shammas said: “To holistically educate baccalaureate and advanced practice

nurses to deliver high quality, safe nursing care to diverse populations utilizing critical thought, compassionate service, and courageous leadership.” Dr. Shammas noted that this mission flows directly from the university’s mission. As a faith-based institution, Concordia is committed to service to improve the lives of all people as God’s creation, and to respect all people as individuals of great intrinsic worth. The university’s website states that the BSN Nursing Program has three primary goals: • To provide a strong knowledge, skill and attitude foundation for competent, evidence-based professional practice in providing and coordinating care of patients/clients, families, groups,

communities and populations. • To develop students’ abilities to serve as Christian leaders in professional nursing roles and to be contributing members of the profession of nursing. • To prepare students to function as change agents to improve the quality and safety of healthcare within dynamic, complex healthcare systems. Specific outcomes for the nursing program graduates were developed by the Texas Board of Nursing. These include expectations of what they will achieve as a member of the nursing profession, as a provider of patient-centered care, as a patient safety advocate, and as a member of a healthcare team.

A Nurse’s Role Dr. Shammas said that of the 86 students graduating this April, many have already been hired at area hospitals, including HCA St. David’s, Ascension Seton, and Baylor Scott & White. “Nursing has always been a highly desirable profession for those that have a desire to serve,” Dr. Shammas said. “The pandemic and recent snow storm have brought a lot of media attention to the profession and highlighted the essential and difficult work of the nursing profession. As a result, many people have learned what it is that nurses really do. This is important for the profession of nursing, to share the actual role of the nurse and how integral the role is to the healthcare system.” Amid the pandemic, nurses are often described as heroes of the healthcare profession, as they work to help patients as well as their families. “Nurses serve in a lot of capacities,” Dr. Shammas said. “They are on the frontlines of healthcare, doing a lot of direct patient care and coordinating the healthcare team. Nurses spend a lot of time with patients that gives them insight into a holistic perspective of patient care.” In addition to the patient care work, nurses make a lot of sacriﬁces to serve their patients, Dr. Shammas said. “The recent snow storm showed nurses spending the night and multiple nights, sometimes two or three days at the hospital, sleeping at hospitals to support patients and provide essential care,” Dr. Shammas said. “This commitment is part of being a nurse and makes an impact on the community when they see this sacriﬁce in hard times like the snow storm.” “Nurses are heroes every day, this doesn’t only occur during a pandemic or snowstorm,” Dr. Shammas said.

How did you decide to pursue a career in nursing and how long have you been with Concordia University Texas? A: I decided to pursue nursing in college because I wanted to serve my community in the healthcare field. I started my nursing journey in 1997 and have done a lot of different roles in nursing and have loved every minute. I joined the Concordia nursing team in 2011 as an assistant professor of nursing.

What has been most instrumental in making the Concordia University Texas Nursing Program a success? A: The faculty and students. The faculty are experienced and are dedicated to the mission of Concordia and the profession of nursing. This is shared with the

nursing students as faculty serve as mentors and role models. Our students and alumni share this commitment to the university mission and service to the community. Our alumni support and contribute a lot to the healthcare of our community.

What is most challenging about being a nurse? What is most rewarding?

A: One of the biggest challenges is managing stress and balancing work and life. Nurses have an extremely difficult role that sometimes impacts physical and mental well-being. Even with the challenges, people often ask why would nurses continue to serve in their profession. It is because nursing is the most rewarding profession. We are part of life-changing events in the lives of our patients.

A: The mission of the university and the nursing program is unique. The faculty and nursing students are truly committed to this and serve and live out the mission in nursing practice.

Convenience, compassion and specialization spur success

est Medical Services finalist ARA Diagnostic Imaging knows you may not be feeling your best when you walk through their doors. “It all starts with our core value of compassion,” Dr. Greg Connor, President of ARA, said. “We provide care for people that are not necessarily feeling well.” ARA Diagnostic Imaging is a home-grown Austin imaging group that has been attending to Central Texas since 1954. ARA works with both patients and providers, offering hundreds of exams and procedures such as ultrasounds, MRIs and mammograms. “Our technologists perform the scans,” Connor said. “Our radiologists will provide the diagnosis and inform the referring provider of the results.” One of ARA’s great strengths, according to Connor, is their ability to provide services to patients at every stage of life, from pediatrics, to mammography, sport injuries and issues that crop up as we age. “We are really here for all central Texans,” he said. “For instance, you could bring your child in for a broken arm and return for a mammogram the following week.” ARA radiologists have multiple subspecialties ranging from musculoskeletal radiology to body imaging to interventional radiology and more. “Every area of the body

WHAT’SNEW WITHARADIAGNOSTICIMAGING Just like Austin and Central Texas, ARA Diagnostic Imaging is growing. “Every year we have more patients and get to serve more central Texans,” Connor said. “And we’re expanding this year out in Manor.” The brand new stand-alone location opens in April and enables ARA to bring its specialized care further east than they ever have before. “That’s a fast-growing area of central Texas,” Connor said. “So, we wanted to get out in that area, too, to start serving these folks.” A general imaging center, the Manor facility will be located at 12700 Lexington St., Suite 300. It will offer a full array of services including 3D mammography, bone densitometry, 3T open-bore MRI, CT, ultrasound and X-ray. “We are so happy to be part of the Manor community!” Connor said. Also, in April, ARA will open the newly renovated Austin Center Boulevard (ACB) location in Central Austin. The facility has been closed for about a year as it undergoes its transformation. After many years in the nearby Jefferson Building, ARA’s Women Imaging Center is relocating and will be part of the Austin Center Boulevard location. is covered by a specialist at ARA,” said Connor. A: We just have been very responsive to the growth of Austin and the needs of Austin patients and providers -- because we serve both. We do the imaging that needs to be done to provide diagnoses.

What are you known for?

A: Most women that reach the age of 40 are probably going to come to ARA to get a mammogram. If you say ‘ARA’ around Austin, a lot of people will say ‘I’ve been there for a mammogram.’ Or ‘I’ve taken my child for an X-ray.’ Or ‘Yeah, sure, they did an MRI when I tore my shoulder.’ So, we do many common exams like that

South Austin bingo hall specializes in fun and fundraising

For those looking for an amusing way to pass the time while also giving back to the community, playing bingo might offer the best of both worlds. Ben White Bingo is an association of Austin Area Charities that have been licensed by the state of Texas to conduct bingo to fundraise for each charity’s mission. They are located in South Austin off Ben White Boulevard near Menchaca. Charitable Bingo has been conducted here consecutively over the last 30 years, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for Austin area nonprofits. At any given time the association members include up to seven different nonprofits, such as charter schools, veterans organizations, LGBT services, fraternal organizations, independent libraries and research nonprofits to support. Consistently, Ben White Bingo employs between 20 and 30 employees depending on the time of year. Open seven days a week, Ben White Bingo offers a robust schedule for guests. Doors open at 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with early hours of 2:30 on weekends. The majority of the responsibility at Ben White falls on the shoulders of Tiffany Score. She shows up to operate bingo sometimes up to seven days a week, rain or shine. Her job requires her to do more than just make sure the bingo games are run correctly and fair, she is also an important part of many of the customers’ daily lives and a leader to the staff.
