in 1990. Goffin has left an indelible mark on American music. CAROLE KING (Words and Music). Pop music would be very different without the contributions of Carole King, who at age 17 wrote her first #1 hit with Gerry Goffin, “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” for the Shirelles. The dozens of chart hits Goffin and King wrote during this period became legendary, but it was 1971’s Tapestry that took King to the pinnacle, speaking personally to her contemporaries and providing a spiritual musical backdrop to the decade. More than 400 of her compositions have been recorded by over 1,000 artists, resulting in 100 hit singles and six Grammys®. BARRY MANN (Words and Music) has written the melodies of some of the most influential pop songs in musical history. He has been inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. CYNTHIA WEIL (Words and Music) is known as the lyricist of classic songs such as “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” the mostplayed song of the 20th century. In addition to the songs heard in Beautiful, she set the words to later standards including “Somewhere Out There,” “Here You Come Again,” “He’s So Shy,” “Just Once,” and “Don’t Know Much,” to name just a few. ROY ORBISON & BUDDY HOLLY THE ROCK ‘N’ ROLL DREAM TOUR TUE, NOVEMBER 12, 2019 AT 8PM

CO-PRESENTED BY STATE THEATRE NEW JERSEY AND METROPOLITAN ENTERTAINMENT

31

ROY ORBISON & BUDDY HOLLY—THE ROCK ‘N’ ROLL DREAM TOUR

ABOUT THE SHOW For the first time in history, multiple Grammy® Award-winners and Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Roy Orbison and Buddy Holly will share the stage as part of the groundbreaking Roy Orbison & Buddy Holly—The Rock ‘N’ Roll Dream Tour. The Rock ‘N’ Roll Dream Tour is the brainchild of leading technology purveyor BASE Hologram. It brings to life two iconic artists, accompanied by a live band and backup singers to perform songs from two of the greatest song catalogs in history. Both Orbison and Holly’s holograms interact adeptly both with the musicians on stage, as well as the audience, using innovative digital and laser technology to create an immersive experience. The duo’s 16 platinum and 19 gold records, 10 Grammy® Awards and nearly two dozen Top 40 hits including Holly’s seminal tracks “Peggy Sue,” “Not Fade Away,” “That’ll Be The Day,” and Orbison’s “Cryin’,” “Only The Lonely,” and “You Got It” will highlight the groundbreaking live concert event. Holly and Orbison’s musical influence can be heard in the music of some of the most successful musicians of all time. Paul McCartney admits, “At least the first 40 songs we [The Beatles] wrote were Buddy Holly influenced.” A virtual who’s who of the world’s greatest musicians have long credited Orbison and/or Holly with their impact of both

32

their own careers and on the artform. Of Orbison, Bruce Springsteen recalls, “Roy had the ability to sound like he dropped in from another planet and yet get the stuff that was right to the heart of what you were livin’ in today. Everybody knows that nobody sings like Roy Orbison.” Bob Dylan even credited Holly in his Nobel Prize speech, calling him “the archetype… everything I wasn’t and wanted to be.” Orbison and Holly both grew up in northern Texas—Orbison in Vernon, Holly in Lubbock—just 180 miles apart. The pair brought their unique Texas influence to the same recording studio in Norman Petty’s Studios in Clovis, NM. This studio is the equivalent to Texas music what Sun Studios was to Memphis music. The pair were also forward thinking when it came to technology. Orbison was always big on technology and one of the first musicians to realize the power of television. Along the same lines, Holly was among the first artists to use techniques such as double-tracking on his albums. Along with his band The Crickets, Holly helped set the standard for rock and roll orchestration by setting the two guitars, bass and drum line-up now seen in traditional concerts. These two icons were inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame just one year apart—Holly in 1986, Orbison in 1987—but sadly died long before their time. “When you look at the architects of the Rock and Roll era, the names that come

TUE, NOVEMBER 12, 2019 AT 8PM

to mind are Roy Orbison and Buddy Holly,” said Brian Becker, Chairman and CEO of BASE Hologram. “Both of these men weren’t just gifted musicians, but skillful innovators who helped influence others in game-changing ways.” “These men weren’t just one thing— they were artists in every sense of the word,” said BASE Hologram CEO of Production Marty Tudor. “Like Roy, Buddy has a truly impressive songbook and in many cases, audiences may not have realized he was the one behind so many hits. Part of the beauty of these productions is we get to share the legacy of these performers and remind people the full range of their talent.” “My father’s music meant the world to not just us Orbison’s but to millions of fans worldwide. Being able to reopen his legendary songbook and again hear his voice bounce off great concert hall walls is both a transcendent and cathartic experience,” said Roy Orbison, Jr., President of Roy Or-

bison Music. “How beyond cool and special that these two great friends, now get to tour the world together.” Based in Los Angeles, CA, BASE Hologram develops, produces, and distributes live entertainment and location-based productions worldwide that combine holographic cinema and mixed reality with live entertainment. These productions utilize breath-taking state-of-the-art holographic digital and laser technology and expert theatrical stagecraft to showcase artists, icons and celebrities as well as historical figures and fictional and animated characters in photorealistic, 3-D productions, performing on stage with live musicians, singers, and performers, enabling audiences to connect dynamically with the content in live settings. www.royandbuddy.com Produced by John Scher/ Metropolitan Entertainment and the State Theatre

ABOUT THE ARTISTS MATT HAIMOVITZ – Cello Renowned as a musical pioneer, cellist Matt Haimovitz is praised by The New York Times as a “ferociously talented cellist who brings his megawatt sound and uncommon expressive gifts to a vast variety of styles” and by The New Yorker as “remarkable virtuoso” who “never turns in a predictable performance.” He has inspired classical music lovers and countless new listeners by bringing his artistry to concert halls and clubs, outdoor festivals, and intimate coffee houses—any place where passionate music can be heard. He brings a fresh ear to familiar repertoire, champions new music, and initiates groundbreaking collaborations, as well as creating innovative recording projects. Alongside his relentless touring schedule, Haimovitz mentors an award-winning studio of young cellists at the Schulich School of Music of McGill University in Montreal, in addition to his role as the first ever John Cage Fellow at The New School’s Mannes School of Music in New York City. The 2019/2020 season will see Haimovitz on extensive tours across the U.S. with pianists Simone Dinnerstein in a program juxtaposing Beethoven and Philip Glass; Haimovitz also will be continue his crossgenre collaboration with Vijay Iyer; in numerous chamber music performances including his signature “Moveable Feast” and “Listening Room” cycles, which feature music for solo cello by Bach and more contemporary voices; as well as performing several cello concerti by Dvorak, Henri Dutilleux, Alfred Schnitke, and others from Texas to the Czech Republic. Haimovitz will also be heard on tour in Europe and the U.S. with composer/pianist Philip Glass highlighted by a performance a recently-opened Paris Philharmonic. Also upcoming is the world premiere of Jacqueline—a portrait of virtuosity, an opera for soprano and cello, written by Luna Pearl Woolf and Royce Vavrek, based on the life of iconic cellist Jacqueline du Pré, for Tapestry Opera in Toronto. 42

Haimovitz made his debut in 1984, at the age of 13, as soloist with Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic and made his first recording with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, for Deutsche Grammophon, at age 17. He has gone on to perform on the world’s most esteemed stages, with such orchestras and conductors as the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic with Zubin Mehta, the English Chamber Orchestra with Daniel Barenboim, the Boston Symphony Orchestra with Leonard Slatkin, and the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal with Kent Nagano. Haimovitz made his Carnegie Hall debut when he substituted for his teacher, the legendary Leonard Rose, in Schubert’s String Quintet in C, alongside Isaac Stern, Shlomo Mintz, Pinchas Zukerman, and Mstislav Rostropovich. The solo cello recital is a Haimovitz trademark, both inside and outside the concert hall. In 2000, he made waves with his Bach “Listening-Room” tour, for which, to great acclaim, Haimovitz took Bach’s beloved cello suites out into the clubs across the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. Haimovitz’ 50-state Anthem tour in 2003 celebrated living American composers and featured the cellist’s own arrangement of Jimi Hendrix’s “Star-Spangled Banner.” He was the first classical artist to play at New York’s infamous CBGB club, in a performance filmed by ABC News for Nightline Up Close. Haimovitz’ recording career encompasses more than 20 years of award-winning work on Deutsche Grammophon and his and composer/producer Luna Pearl Woolf’s own trailblazing independent label Oxingale Records, now in collaboration with PENTATONE, several of which have received Grammy® and Juno Award nominations. Recent recordings include Isang Yun: Sunrise Falling, a centennial commemoration of the Korean composer’s life and music on the PENTATONE Oxingale Series, with Dennis Russell Davies and the Bruckner Orchester Linz; Troika, an all-Russian program featuring Rachmaninoff to Pussy Riot, with his longtime duo partner, pianist Christopher O’Riley; and

two performance compilations from the Tippet Rise Arts Center in Montana. This season will also see the release of an album of French music with pianist Mari Kodama for PENTATONE. Haimovitz’ recordings for the Orange Mountain Music label, Philip Glass’s Partita No. 2 for Solo Cello and Cello Concerto No. 2, “Naqoyqatsi,” with the Cincinnati Symphony and Dennis Russell Davies, have been widely acclaimed. In 2006, Haimovitz received the Concert Music Award from ASCAP for his advocacy of living composers and pioneering spirit, and in 2004, the American Music Center awarded Haimovitz the Trailblazer Award, for his far-reaching contributions to American music. Born in Israel, Haimovitz has also been honored with the Avery Fisher Career Grant (1986), the Grand Prix du Disque (1991), the Diapason d’Or (1991), and he is the first cellist ever to receive the prestigious Premio Internazionale “Accademia Musicale Chigiana” (1999). Haimovitz studied at the Collegiate School in New York and at the Juilliard School, in the final class of Leonard Rose, after which he continued his cello studies with Ronald Leonard and Yo-Yo Ma. In 1996, he received a B.A. magna cum laude with highest honors from Harvard University. NAVAH PERLMAN – Piano Navah Perlman, pianist, began concertizing at a young age, making her public performance debut as a soloist with the Independent School Orchestra in New York City when she was 11 years old. Perlman’s teachers included Ronit Amir Lowenthal, and at the Juilliard Precollege Division, Herbert Stessin. She also studied chamber music with Felix Galimir, Robert Mann, and Dorothy DeLay. Over the span of her career she has played with many major orchestras including the Montreal Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, and others. In addition to her orchestral performances, Perlman has played numerous solo recitals and an abundance of chamber music. Her festival appearances include the Aspen Music Festival, the

Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Ravinia Festival, and the Barns at Wolf Trap. For many years, Perlman was in a piano trio with cellist Zuill Bailey and violinist Kurt Nikkanen, whose position was later held by violinist Giora Schmidt. She has collaborated in pedagogy workshops for teachers and has participated in several chamber music residency programs including those at Stanford University, Iowa University, and the University of Kansas. In 2014, Perlman was appointed as the Artistic Director of Lake Placid Pro Musica, a chamber music series affiliate of the Lake Placid Sinfonietta which brings chamber music to the Adirondacks during the summer season. She is also a proud member of the Board of Concerts in Motion, a not-forprofit organization in New York City that brings uplifting, live music to more than 30,000 homebound and isolated individuals served by over 80 essential service agencies throughout the five boroughs of New York. Perlman has been collaborating with Haimovitz since 1981, when they were both in elementary school. Perlman’s recordings can be found on EMI Classics and Oxingale Records.

PROGRAM NOTES Ludwig Van Beethoven 12 Variations in G Major on a Handel theme, “Judas Maccabaeus” WoO45 (Born December 16, 1770, in Bonn; died March 26, 1827, in Vienna) The theme and variation technique, used as a way of adding interest to repetitions of melody, was first used by composers who began to write extended instrumental solo pieces in the 16th century. In this form, a theme is followed by a series of movements or pieces each with the same or very similar structure. Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven all wrote variation movements in some of their extended works, but they wrote few separate sets of variations. Those they did write were often either light, entertaining compositions for amateurs or brilliant display pieces for virtuoso performers. By his career’s end, Beethoven had com-

posed nearly 70 sets of variations. Most of the early ones he based on themes by other composers. Beethoven was a great admirer of Handel; borrowing another composer’s melody was considered a gesture of homage at the time. Beethoven may have chosen Handel’s “See the conqu’ring hero comes” theme from Judas Maccabaeus as a tribute to King Friedrich Wilhelm. It was an especially felicitous choice as Handel was a composer who occupied a special place in Friedrich Wilhelm’s affections. The 12 variations are in the decorative, high-Classical style and maintain the harmonic movement of the theme. Beethoven had very few models for his composition for the then unusual combination of cello and piano, but nevertheless he achieved virtuosity and control in this work in ways that he had not yet demonstrated in earlier works. Beethoven composed the engaging Variations in G major for Cello and Piano in 1796, and in 1797, it was published in Vienna. It premiered in 1796 in Berlin, as did the Op. 5 Sonatas, with performances by cellist Jean-Louis Duport, a favorite of the king, who was a fine amateur cellist and composer. (The king was obviously pleased with the work and rewarded Beethoven with a gold snuffbox for composing it.) As Handel’s oratorios were not performed in Vienna at the time, it is probable that Baron Gottfried van Swieten, who was one of Beethoven’s early patrons, as well as a lover of the works of Bach and Handel, may have suggested the theme to Beethoven. The work is dedicated to Princess Christiane von Lichnowsky, wife of Prince Karl von Lichnowsky, one of Beethoven’s most important patrons in Vienna, in whose home the composer lived between 1793 and 1795. The stately Handel theme, which may be recognized as the Easter hymn, “Thine Be the Glory” is a two-part structure. The piano plays this noble and elegant theme, while the cello accompanies in the middle register. The theme sets the tone for the entire work: it is light and transparent with its middle section in the relative minor key, adding a moment of pathos. 44

Variation I, for piano alone, is smooth and flowing, a contrast to the stately theme. Variation II gives the cello its own version of the theme, over a repeated piano accompaniment of broken, sweeping arpeggios and then staccato triplets. Variation III is a display of virtuosity for the pianist’s right hand. The piano part is noteworthy, filling melodic gaps created by the cello part. Broken scales start explosively but end sounding contrite. Variation IV is the first of two minor variations. It features a recognizable appearance of theme, which turns dark with a key modulation to a minor tonality. The middle section becomes a bright, radiant E-flat major. Variation V is a coy conversation between the two instruments. The piano is optimistic and brilliant, the cello serious. Variation VI sounds much like the music of Bach, featuring both instruments and broken scales in a contrapuntal setting. Variation VII gives the cello an occasion for a brilliant virtuosic display of rapid triplets. The piano also has one opportunity to be highlighted. Variation VIII, the second variation in a minor tonality, shows Beethoven’s dramatic and stormy side. The piano articulates the theme in crashing chords against ascending and descending scales that move from hand to hand. Dramatically, the prayer-like middle section makes a contrasting statement. Variation IX is childlike and innocent, and calm, reducing the theme to its bare bones. Variation X captures the glory and heroism evoked by Handel’s title. The theme in canon between the cello, with a soaring, high part, and the booming bass of the piano, is accompanied by a right-hand sixteenth-note passage in the piano. Variation XI is the most extended slow movement. A rhapsodic Adagio, it features much ornamentation and is very difficult to play. The lyrical intensity of this poised

and elegant variation, the longest of the set, is expressed in the highly ornamented melody and harp-like piano arpeggios in the piano. In the central section, the cello has an intense outburst of emotion. Variation XII, the finale, is the most carefree variation. Beethoven transforms the theme into a jovial, lively dance in triple meter, which radically alters the rhythm. The rondo-like movement concludes triumphantly with the piano’s thrilling high trill before the final chords. Philip Glass The Orchard (Born January 31, 1937, in Baltimore) Philip Glass, who is considered one of the most important contemporary American composers, discovered his love for music as a child in his father’s radio repair shop and record store. He began flute lessons early at the Peabody Conservatory, and then at age fifteen, entered the University of Chicago. After graduation, he went on to the Juilliard School of Music in New York and advanced studies with Darius Milhaud at Aspen and Nadia Boulanger in Paris. After he had completed this thorough education in Western musical practice, the Indian sitarist, Ravi Shankar, aroused his interest in non-European music. Glass then traveled in Africa and India; on his return to New York, he organized a group of sympathetic performers, which he called the Philip Glass Ensemble, to perform music in the new style he was developing. Since his music repeated and varied a very small number of basic musical ideas, the term “minimalism” was applied to his idiosyncratic style; a number of other composers who were experimenting along the same lines helped turn the style into a movement. In addition to inspiring admiration, minimalist music has had the ability to puzzle, annoy, and even to infuriate. Although Glass’s music is frequently described as minimalist, he prefers the term theatre music. A typical audience reaction to his spare music during the late 1970s and 1980s included frantic bravos and violent boos, sometimes coming from the same people. Many enthusiasts hailed Glass as 45

the man who was revitalizing music, but just as many castigated him for destroying it. Most upsetting to traditionalists has been the lack of a thematic progression in his music. Glass once explained: “Most music begins with an introduction, then it develops and has all sorts of adventures, some happy, some sad, and then it finally comes out at the end.” He quite consciously did not use that model. Glass has a new conception of a listener’s sense of time. He often utilizes a constant beat and subtly shifting rhythms over a static harmonic structure, which tend to hypnotize the listener. Instead of the expected development sections, he uses increasingly complex repetitions and overlapping lines. The Orchard is part of a collaboration between Glass and Foday Musa Suso for Jean Genet’s play The Screens, as commissioned by director Joanne Akalaitis. Akalaitis has commented: “It was personally important to me that a non-white, African composer work on The Screens. I also wanted someone who really knew theatre and who understood my work. Suso and Glass turned out to be a dazzling combination. Their music supports and embraces Genet’s rich and complex theatrical poetry with a musical feast I never imagined.” The Screens, Genet’s last and greatest stage work, premiered in Paris in 1966, at the Theatre Odeon. This landmark work made a theatrical explosion during its premiere performances, complete with riots and gendarmerie. The present score, The Orchard, is an excerpt from The Screens; it was written for a production presented at the Guthrie Theatre, Minneapolis, in November 1989. The play is set in the early 1960’s in Algeria during its revolutionary struggle for independence from France. Genet combined themes of colonialism, exploitation and the European notion of “Arab-ness.” Akalaitis had originally asked Suso to do the score in collaboration with a western composer. Glass has written: “I heard of the project and volunteered myself as Suso’s musical partner. We had known each other 50

for some time having traveled together in Africa in the mid-80’s as preparation for my recording of the film Powaqqatsi.” He continues, “The idea of combining Western and African musical traditions, of course, came from the play itself. JoAnne joined us in the recording studio and we followed her through the script, composing music for each scene as she described for us how she would devise the staging. That meant that either Suso or I would begin the composition and then add to it the contributions of the other composer as things progressed. Besides this ‘back and forth’ kind of collaboration, we each contributed individual pieces as well. The result is, to my mind, the closest I had come at that point to a real collaboration with another composer. The music for The Screens is clearly something neither Suso or I could have done alone and was full of surprises for both of us.” The Orchard’s music is unexpectedly warm and affirming. When in a concert Glass introduced The Orchard, he said that he hadn’t seen the play in so long that he couldn’t remember why the piece was called The Orchard, but he indicated that he had intended it to evoke sounds of nature. Philip Glass Partita No. 2 for Solo Cello Philip Glass’s Partitas had a very discernible genesis. Glass commented, “I met Tim Fain during the tour of ‘The Book of Longing,’ an evening based on the poetry of Leonard Cohen. In that work, all of the instrumentalists had solo parts. Shortly after that tour, Tim asked me to compose some solo violin music for him. I quickly agreed. Having been very impressed by his ability and interpretation of my work, I decided on a seven-movement piece. I thought of it as a Partita, the name inspired by the solo clavier and solo violin music of Bach. The music of that time included dance-like movements, often a chaconne, which represented the compositional practice. What inspired me about these pieces was that they allowed the composer to present a variety of music composed within an overall structure. I set to work almost at once and began with the first three pieces. I divided the chaconne

into two parts separated by several other movements. In this way, themes could be introduced, set aside, and reintroduced in the work. I was looking for a structure that was both expansive and tightly knit.” Thus begun Glass’s involvement in creating Partitas for both violin and cello. Glass described his Partitas as almost a direct product of the time he spent as a youth listening to Bach’s solo string music; when he was a kid, though, he had no idea that he would ever become a composer. Whether listening to Bach’s Suites for Unaccompanied Cello in his father’s record store or taking lessons in fugal counterpoint from legendary teacher Nadia Boulanger in Paris when he was in his mid20s, Glass was never far away from Bach’s musical world. Recently he paid Bach the ultimate compliment, saying: “He articulated the language of music in the most complete, rich and complex form that any single person has ever been able to do.” Bach’s influence on Glass’s music was not immediately apparent in Glass’s early works, but it became more evident in the Partitas. Glass commented that it actually was his personal romance with the cellist Wendy Sutter that inspired him to compose Partita No. 1, Songs and Poems (2007). Another important influence was the work of singer-songwriter-poet Leonard Cohen, with whom Glass worked on the song-cycle Book of Longing in 2006. Cohen’s epigrammatic and occasionally bleak poetry introduced Glass to a new expressive palette; as a result, he created the Partitas, a series of dark, melancholic works for solo strings that inhabit a world suffused mostly with intense introspection. Partita No. 2, composed in 2010, is gently rhapsodic; in it, Glass adapts Bach’s expansive melodies and brisk figuration into his own musical language. One of the work’s more interesting moments is in the 3rd movement where Glass successfully explores the cello’s range and potential for color. Glass commented that his new style seemed to arrive fully formed, that he composed the Partitas “almost … from memory”.

Partita No. 2 contains recognizable signature repeating figures. Each subsequent movement reflects the characteristic sound through different lenses: sometimes slow and ponderous, then later, slim and mercurial. The Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts presented a concert of Glass’s music for cello on June 22, 2017; the concert included Matt Haimowitz’s performance of the world premiere of Partita No. 2, which, although composed in 2010, had remained unperformed until the 2017 concert. John Corigliano Fantasia on an Ostinato (Born February 16, 1938, in New York) John Corigliano is a fertile composer who has also been an active participant in American musical life. He studied composition at Columbia University with Otto Luening and privately with Paul Creston and Vittorio Giannini. He has composed a large quantity of concert music, made many recordings, worked on radio and television, taught in various locations, and wrote music for broadcast commercials. He began to make his reputation as a composer when he was only twenty. Since then, he has been honored with a Guggenheim Fellowship, a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, and a commission from the Metropolitan Opera. Fantasia on an Ostinato, one of Corigliano’s most performed works, was commissioned by the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 1985 and premiered at the competition on May 24, 1985, by Barry Douglas, of Texas Christian University, Fort Worth. Fantasia is a study in obsession and how it precludes any attempt at progression and narrative. The ostinato here is a rhythmic pattern on a single pitch. Corigliano says: “I left the decisions concerning repetition of repeated patterns in the central section to the competitors, so that judges and audiences might hear their varied viewpoints as to the building of the climax of a musical structure. The orchestral realization, however, is completely notated, and thus completely controlled. In addition, cer51

tain sections have been expanded, both in texture and duration, especially the central section that leads to what is now a considerably more developed climax.”

performer-repeated patterns grow continually more ornate. This climaxes in a return of the original rhythm and, finally, the reappearance of the theme itself.”

Corigliano has written, “In mulling over the project, I immediately rejected the idea of a technical showpiece as redundant. What could I write that would test something the standard repertoire would not? I decided I could investigate the performers’ imagination and musicality. A young performer’s life is dominated by guidance: from living teachers to the encyclopedic recorded catalogue of the world’s important pianists playing the standard repertoire, they are trained from childhood to re-create, rather than create. But this piece would be brand-new: no example waited to guide (or limit) them. And the piece would be deliberately constructed to make the players’ teachers of little to no help. They would be on their own. So I constructed the beginning and end of Fantasia on an Ostinato precisely, but I made the large central section a series of interlocking repeated patterns: the performer decided the number and, to a certain extent, the character of these repetitions. In other words, the shape was his/hers to build. Interestingly, the duration of this piece varied from 7 minutes to over 20 in the Cliburn performances! These repeated patterns comprise my only experiment in ‘minimalist’ technique. While mulling this piece, I remembered minimalism’s forebears—Pachelbel’s Canon, Ravel’s brilliantly scored Bolero, and the second movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No.7, in which a relentless ostinato, or accompaniment figure, continues unvaried (except for a long crescendo and added secondary voices) for nearly five minutes: unusual in Beethoven, who constantly varied his materials. The first half of my Fantasia on an Ostinato develops the obsessive rhythm of the Beethoven and the simple harmonies implicit in the first half of his melody. Its second part launches those interlocking repetitions and reworks the strange major-minor descending chords of the latter part of the Beethoven into a chain of harmonies over which the

Glass explains: “I approached this task with mixed feelings about the contemporary phenomenon known as minimalism, for while I admired its emphasis on attractive textures and its occasional ability to achieve a hypnotic quality (not unlike some late Beethoven), I did not care for what I found were its excessive repetition, its lack of architecture, and its overall emotional sterility.” Corigliano’s ostinato’s two parts include an exploration of the features of the two parts of the opening ostinato theme in Beethoven’s symphony: the first features both the rhythm and the harmony of the first half of Beethoven’s ostinato theme; the second extends the material of the second half of Beethoven’s ostinato, becoming more elaborate as it develops contrasts between major and minor. Finally the rhythm of the Beethoven becomes evident again, leading to a quotation of the whole of Beethoven’s theme. Ludwig Van Beethoven Sonata for Cello and Piano No. 5, in D Major, Op. 102, No. 2 (Born December 16, 1770, in Bonn; died March 26, 1827, in Vienna) Beethoven’s only major works between 1812 and 1816 were two piano sonatas and two cello sonatas. At that time, he seemed to have exhausted the expressive possibilities of the musical language and forms that he had used until then, and was pausing, resting his powers before exercising them again in the creation of the extraordinary series of masterpieces in an entirely new manner and for the most part on a huge scale of his last productive years. What was to come in the next four piano sonatas and five string quartets, the Symphony No. 9 and the Missa Solemnis, is only hinted at in the cello sonatas, but we clearly hear that Beethoven has left behind the musical world of his Seventh and Eighth Symphonies and is moving in the direction of the powerful music of the

Hammerklavier Sonata, Op. 106. The two Cello Sonatas of Op. 102 are atypical in that Beethoven did not struggle with them over a long period of time, polishing themes and trying various organizational schemes. He composed them quickly at the end of July and the beginning of August 1815, for a faithful member of his circle, the cellist Joseph Linke, or Lincke (1733‑1837, who had joined Count Rasumovsky’s string quartet around 1808 and had become a good friend. Contemporary accounts of his playing often mention his sympathy for Beethoven’s style; the composer sometimes refers to him as “learned master” and enjoyed making puns on his name, as linke means “left” in German. When Rasumovsky’s palace burned down, in 1815, he disbanded his quartet, and Countess Maria Erdödy took Linke in. The Countess was a frail and beautiful woman to whom Beethoven felt so close that he called her his “confessor.” She had studied with him, and a trustworthy music critic of the time said that she played his music well. Beethoven spent much of the summer of 1815 with Erdödy and Linke, and it is certain that he wrote the difficult Op. 102 Sonatas expressly for them. When they were first published, in 1817, the cello sonatas bore no dedication, but they had another distinction, for they were Beethoven’s first chamber music to be issued in score, with the cello line printed above the piano part instead of only in a separate leaflet. For the first time, as he played, the pianist could also see the other instrument’s music, which made it much easier to attain the kind of unity in performance that is now considered essential. The cello had only just begun to liberate itself from its traditional role as the basso continuo. In a corrected edition issued in 1819 (as sonatas for cello or violin), they were dedicated to Countess Erdödy. The sonata covers the same kind of material Beethoven explores in his late string quartets. The overall structure shows Beethoven’s aim to create a fluid, “total sonata,” equaling more as a whole than each of

the movements individually. With the exception of Bach’s Suites for Unaccompanied Cello, this sonata is thought to be the most technically and emotionally demanding work for cello before the 20th century. Sonata No. 2, in D Major opens directly without an introduction, Allegro con brio, with a brisk, energetic, even aggressive main theme to which a lyrical second subject is set in contrast in a sonata form structure. The development is harmonically adventurous and the recapitulation somewhat modified; a suspenseful coda brings the work to its end. Each note has an important position in the movement’s overall structure, one of “robust and resolute grandeur” according to Carl Czerny. The following Adagio con molto sentimento d’affetto is the only nearly independent slow movement in all Beethoven’s Cello Sonatas. This substantial movement is free and rhapsodic in form, as deeply introspective and richly expressive as many of the great slow movements to come in his last great works. The opening in the minor tonality contrasts with the serene major key middle section. This central movement is joined to the finale through a harmonic device: the final chord tends to resolve toward the tonic, and the finale, Allegro fugato in D major, begins immediately, without a pause. It is the first of the powerful fugues that appear in Beethoven’s late works, the first time Beethoven allows a fugue to be the foundation of a movement rather than using fugal material within another dominant form. It also presages the contrapuntal writing that Beethoven was to use frequently in his final works. Although the movement begins seriously and formally, it eventually takes on a witty, colorful character. The first movement themes return but function more as looks backward or reminiscences rather than units with which Beethoven aims to build structural cohesion. In this movement, the composer not only explores the expressive possibilities of counterpoint but also incorporates the extreme ranges of the newly developed piano. 53
